The study aims to investigate the impact of implementing the Numbered Heads Strategy on developing oral expression skills among Arabic learners who speak languages, as well as their attitudes towards this teaching method. The research involved 50 participants, both male and female, at the fourth level of a language center within Al al-Bayt University. These participants were divided into two groups: a control group, which received traditional instruction, and an experimental group, which was taught using the Numbered Heads Strategy. The study designed an achievement test and an attitudinal scale to assess the participants. The results revealed a statistically significant difference in favor of the experimental group, with higher mean scores in both the oral expression skills test and the post-attitude scale. However, no significant differences were found between the mean scores of the experimental and control groups in the oral expression test and attitude scale when considering the interaction between teaching strategy and gender. Based on these results, the study recommends the utilization of the Numbered Heads Strategy in teaching oral expression skills to Arabic learners who speak languages other than Arabic.

Objective Determine whether data collected from a smartphone camera can be used to detect anemia in a pediatric population. Methods HEMO-AI (Hemoglobin Easy Measurement by Optical Artificial Intelligence), a clinical study carried out from December 2020 to February 2023, recruited patients from the Pediatric Emergency Department, Pediatric Inpatient Department and Pediatric Hematology Unit of the Haemek Medical Center, Afula, Israel. A population-based sample of 823 patients aged 6 months to 18 years who had undergone a venous blood draw for a complete blood count since being admitted to the hospital were enrolled. Patients with total leukonychia, nailbed darkening or discoloration due to medication, nail clubbing, clinically indicated jaundice, subungual hematoma, nailbed lacerations, avulsion injuries, or nail polish applied on fingernails were not eligible for study recruitment. Video and images of the patients’ hand placed in a collection chamber were collected using a smartphone camera. Results About 823 samples, 531 from a 12.2 megapixel camera and 256 from a 12.2 megapixel camera, were collected. About 26 samples were excluded by the study coordinator for irregularities. About 97% of fingernails and 68% of skin samples were successfully identified by a post-trained machine learning model. Separate models built to detect anemia using images taken from the Pixel 3 had an average precision of 0.64 and an average recall of 0.4, whereas models built using the Pixel 6 had an average precision of 0.8 and an average recall of 0.84. Further supplementation of training data with synthetic data boosted the precision of the latter to 0.84 and the average recall to 0.87. Conclusions This study lays the groundwork for the future evolution of non-invasive, pain-free, and accessible anemia screening tools tailored specifically for pediatric patients. It identifies important sample collection parameters and design, provides critical algorithms for the pre-processing of fingernail data, and reports an initial capability to detect anemia with 87% sensitivity and 84% specificity. Background & Aims: Metabolic-dysfunction associated steatohepatitis (MASH) is associated with obesity and diabetes, and is linked to liver fibrosis and cardiovascular disease. Identification of patients who have MASH is challenging and the development of non-invasive strategies to diagnose and follow this condition is an important unmet need. Recent studies in mouse and humans have identified that significant changes occur in liver macrophage composition during MASH progression; namely, resident Kupffer cells decrease in number while recruited monocyte-derived macrophages increase. Methods: We developed peptide radiotracers targeted to C–C motif chemokine receptor 2 (CCR2) and CD163 to conduct positron emission tomography (PET) imaging of recruited vs. resident macrophages, respectively. Mice were placed on a MASH-inducing diet and non-invasive PET imaging of the liver was performed with tissue confirmation studies using flow cytometry and immunofluorescence. Statistical analyses were conducted using Student’s t tests, Pearson correlational analysis, and linear regression. Results: Using a mouse model of MASH, we found that the liver uptake of both CCR2 and CD163 radiotracers detected an increase in recruited cells and a decrease in resident macrophages. These findings correlated well with tissue macrophage content assessed by flow cytometry with an r value of 0.77 (p = 0.002) and 0.78 (p = 0.001) for CCR2 and CD163, respectively. Serial imaging with these radiotracers at several time points during MASH progression and regression revealed good correlation between liver macrophage composition and PET signal intensity. Conclusion: We demonstrate that novel PET radiotracers targeting CCR2 and CD163 can be used to image macrophage composition in MASH. Non-invasive molecular imaging of inflammation has the potential for diagnosis and monitoring of disease activity in humans with MASH. Impact and implications:: Macrophage-mediated inflammation contributes to MASH progression and fibrosis; however, liver biopsy is currently the only tool to assess this response. Thus, the development of non-invasive imaging modalities to identify and follow inflammatory activation is an area of need for patient care. In this study, we leverage molecular imaging using PET radiotracers to follow changes in macrophage composition that are related to MASH disease activity. The results in our preclinical model provide important proof of concept evidence that this approach can be used to diagnose MASH and to follow disease activity in response to intervention. Ongoing studies will evaluate the utility of this modality in humans with MASH.

Abstract Background Next-generation sequencing (NGS) has significantly transformed the landscape of identifying disease-causing genes associated with genetic disorders. However, a substantial portion of sequenced patients remains undiagnosed. This may be attributed not only to the challenges posed by harder-to-detect variants, such as non-coding and structural variations but also to the existence of variants in genes not previously associated with the patient’s clinical phenotype. This study introduces EvORanker, an algorithm that integrates unbiased data from 1,028 eukaryotic genomes to link mutated genes to clinical phenotypes. Methods EvORanker utilizes clinical data, multi-scale phylogenetic profiling, and other omics data to prioritize disease-associated genes. It was evaluated on solved exomes and simulated genomes, compared with existing methods, and applied to 6260 knockout genes with mouse phenotypes lacking human associations. Additionally, EvORanker was made accessible as a user-friendly web tool. Results In the analyzed exomic cohort, EvORanker accurately identified the “true” disease gene as the top candidate in 69% of cases and within the top 5 candidates in 95% of cases, consistent with results from the simulated dataset. Notably, EvORanker outperformed existing methods, particularly for poorly annotated genes. In the case of the 6260 knockout genes with mouse phenotypes, EvORanker linked 41% of these genes to observed human disease phenotypes. Furthermore, in two unsolved cases, EvORanker successfully identified DLGAP2 and LPCAT3 as disease candidates for previously uncharacterized genetic syndromes. Conclusions We highlight clade-based phylogenetic profiling as a powerful systematic approach for prioritizing potential disease genes. Our study showcases the efficacy of EvORanker in associating poorly annotated genes to disease phenotypes observed in patients. OBJECTIVES: Evidence suggests a possible association between the COVID-19 vaccine and autoimmune disease flares or new onset of various autoinflammatory manifestations, such as pericarditis and myocarditis. The objective of this study was to assess the safety of an mRNA-based BNT162b2 anti-COVID-19 vaccine in individuals with FMF, a prototypic autoinflammatory disease. METHODS: Patients participating in this study fulfilled the criteria for diagnosis of FMF, were older than 18 years and received at least one dose of the vaccine. Data on baseline characteristics, features of FMF, post-vaccination side effects, and disease flares were acquired using electronic medical files and telephone interviews. RESULTS: A total of 273 FMF patients were recruited for the study. >95% were vaccinated with two doses of the vaccine. The rates of local reactions following the first and second vaccine doses were 65.5% and 60%, respectively, and 26% and 50.4%, respectively, for systemic adverse events. These rates are lower than those reported for the general population from real-world and clinical trial settings. Postvaccination FMF activity remained stable in most patients. None of the patients reported an attack of pericarditis or myocarditis, considered the most serious vaccine-associated adverse events. Patients with a more active FMF disease and patients harboring the M694V mutation had a significantly higher rate of post-vaccination systemic side effects and attacks. CONCLUSION: The BNT162b2 mRNA COVID-19 vaccine is safe in patients with FMF. Our results support the administration of this vaccine to FMF patients according to guidelines applicable to the general population.

Abstract: Adult playfulness is an individual difference variable that receives increasing interest. A multifacetted model of playfulness distinguishes between Other-directed, Lighthearted, Intellectual, and Whimsical playfulness. A 12-item brief version to assess these four facets with three items each, the OLIW-S, has been introduced in German. In this study, we investigate the psychometric properties of the Hebrew translation of the OLIW-S in an Israeli sample (N = 298). Our analyses of the item and scale parameters showed acceptable internal consistencies for short scales aimed for research purposes (αs and ωs between .53 and .80), item-total correlations, factorial validity, and metric measurement invariance with the original German language version (German sample, N = 302). Overall, our findings provide initial evidence for the psychometric qualities of the Hebrew translation of the OLIW-S, and analyses using the data from Germany replicate prior findings. We discuss future perspectives for extending the study of the reliability and validity of the Hebrew OLIW-S.

This study examines the psychological repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic on a medical team in an Israeli general hospital. The research explores the professional quality of life, burnout symptoms, secondary traumatic stress, and mindfulness among team members across three distinct phases of the pandemic. Analysis was conducted for different subgroups based on job roles and seniority, allowing for an evaluation of the phase-specific effects on ProQOL (Professional Quality of Life) and mindfulness. Results align with established crisis trajectories: honeymoon/heroic phases, inventory, disillusionment, and recovery. As a result of the prolonged pandemic and the need to change shifts and recruit staff to deal with the affected patients, it is an accumulative study not following the same person but the same ward and the same hospital. The findings suggest a negative correlation between compassion satisfaction and burnout, as well as between mindfulness and burnout/secondary traumatic stress. Unlike most studies, healthcare workers (HCWs) were less affected than doctors in all measures. This study highlights doctors’ vulnerability and underscores hospital management’s key role in promoting effective support for professional quality of life. This is especially important for male doctors facing distinct well-being challenges.

Introduction: Maternal thyroid disease is considered as a risk factor for abnormal thyroid function at birth, as well as for long-term morbidity in offspring. The potential harmful effects on the neonate had led to the clinical practice of thyroid function assessment in infants born to mothers with thyroid disease during pregnancy. In this study, we evaluated the usefulness of routine thyroid function tests for every newborn of a mother with thyroid dysfunction. Methods: Data were collected retrospectively from the medical files of mothers diagnosed with thyroid disease and their infants (496 mother–neonate pairs). All mothers with diagnosed thyroid disease who gave birth in the years 2016–2019 at our medical center were included. Results: Hypothyroidism was the most common maternal diagnosis (91.4%), among which 48.7% had Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. Hyperthyroidism was diagnosed in 8.6% of the cohort – 71.6% of them with Graves’ disease. None of the newborns was diagnosed with congenital hypothyroidism in the screening program. Thyroid-stimulating hormone was >10 mIU/L in 14.6% and >20 mUI/L in 2.2%; all had free thyroxine within normal range. Serum thyroid function test identified four infants with thyroid disease; two had congenital hypothyroidism not related to maternal thyroid disease, one had transient familial congenital hypothyroidism and one had neonatal Graves’ disease. Conclusions: Thyroid function testing for all newborns of mothers with thyroid dysfunction seems redundant. However, in cases of congenital hypothyroidism in siblings, thyroid function test, in addition to newborn thyroid screening, is recommended, and more careful follow-up is indicated. In maternal Graves’ disease, thyroid function test on days 2–3 of life is recommended.

Abstract Background The Ecology of medical care was first published in 1961. The graphical square model showed that 75% of the population in the US and England experience a feeling of illness during a given month, 25% seek medical help and only one percent are hospitalized. In 2001, Green and colleagues found the same findings despite the many changes that occurred over the past decades. The frequency of illness, the desire for assistance and the frequency of seeking and getting medical assistance may differ in different populations due to cultural, economic, social, demographic background and local Health policy. This work describes the ecology of medical care consumption in Israel for the first time and examines the socio-demographic effects on consumption. Methods This is a Nationwide cross-sectional study. A telephone survey was conducted among a representative sample of the adult population (> 15 years) in Israel. Subjective morbidity rate in the preceding month, the rate of those considering medical assistance and those who got assistance were calculated. Correlation between socio-demographic variables and patterns of morbidity and medical care consumption was examined using a t-test and chi square for continuous quantitative and categorical variables. Logistic regression was used for multivariate analysis. Results A total of 1862 people participated; 49.5% reported having symptoms in the previous month, 45% considered seeking medical advice, 35.2% sought out medical assistance and only 1.5% were hospitalized. The vast majority chose to contact their family physician (58%) and the primary care setting provided their needs in 80% of the cases; Subjective morbidity and medical care consumption differed significantly between Israeli Jews and Arabs. Gaps in the availability of medical services were observed as residents of the periphery forewent medical services significantly more than others (OR = 1.42, p = 0.026). Conclusions Subjective morbidity is less common in Israel than in other countries, but paradoxically consumption of medical services is higher. An Israeli who feels ill will usually consider receiving assistance and will indeed receive assistance in most cases. However, a greater tendency to forego medical services in the periphery indicates barriers and inequality in the provision of health services. Different cultural perceptions, lack of knowledge and low accessibility to medical services in the periphery probably contribute to the contrast shown between low consumption of medical services and high prevalence of chronic illness in Arab society. The prevailing preference for family medicine and its ability to deal with most requests for assistance suggest that strengthening family medicine in the periphery may reduce those barriers and inequalities.

Cancer-associated fibroblasts are transcriptionally rewired by signals from the cancer cells, resulting in heterogeneous populations. Here the authors show that loss of BRCA function in pancreatic cancer cells leads to HSF1–dependent accumulation of immune-regulatory clusterin-positive cancer associated fibroblasts.

Despite intensive study, most of the specific genetic factors that contribute to variation in human height remain undiscovered. We conducted a family-based linkage study of height in a unique cohort of very large nuclear families from a founder (Jewish) population. This design allowed for increased power to detect linkage, compared to previous family-based studies. Loci we identified in discovery families could explain an estimated lower bound of 6% of the variance in height in validation families. We showed that these loci are not tagging known common variants associated with height. Rather, we suggest that the observed signals arise from variants with large effects that are rare globally but elevated in frequency in the Jewish population.

Fantastic reality ability (FRA) is defined as the capacity to use imagination in response to stress or trauma. With the emergence of COVID-19 and associated social restrictions, there has been an uptick in imagination use as a coping strategy. This has allowed us to further validate the Fantastic Reality Ability Measurement (FRAME) Scale at this time of stress and uncertainty. Initial exploratory factor analyses (EFA) suggested that FRAME responses are measured by four first-order factors. Using confirmatory factor analyses (CFA), this study set out to confirm this finding and to ascertain if: First-order factors are correlated; or map onto a second or higher-order, fantastic reality ability latent construct. Also, FRAME responses are compared to established scales to demonstrate concurrent and discriminant validity. In accord with previous research and theory, CFA results indicate that each four factors (coping, control, transcendence, playfulness), contribute significantly to the measurement of a higher-order FRA latent construct (N = 437 Israeli adults). We also report robust correlations between FRAME and measures of resiliency and imagination abilities of complexity, directedness and frequency. Both adaptive and maladaptive applications of imagination use in relation to stress are discussed with focus on those who could foster resiliency. The FRAME enables one to briefly measure imagination use in response to stress and could serve as part of questionnaire batteries measuring individual differences and clinical research. Future research should assess the stability of this instrument across different populations over extended periods, specifically those at risk for trauma.

Abstract Background Social distancing and lockdowns were implemented during the first period of the COVID-19 pandemic. Primary care physicians needed to adapt quickly to deliver remote care/telemedicine. Methods A cross-sectional, 47-item online Google Survey was distributed through the Israel Association of Family Physicians (IAFP) mailing list between March 31-May 5, 2020. The questionnaire included demographics, physician characteristics, and information on usage and perceived telemedicine quality. Sampling weights by sex and age groups were applied. Results One hundred fifty-nine primary care physicians (10.6% of registered IAFP members; 63.5% women; mean age 53.4 ± 10.4 years and median professional experience 21.3 years) replied to the survey. The majority (59.7%) of the participants performed a mixture of in-person along with phone counseling. About 40% had no former telemedicine experience. The majority indicated that telephone and video formats were inferior to in-person consultation (68%, 57.1% online and phone, respectively). The overall counseling quality grade (on a 1–10 scale,)median (IQR)) was 6.2 (3) for telephone and 7(2) for video. While 66.9% reported experiencing no challenges, 10% had technical problems, 10% interpersonal problems, 5.6% scheduling difficulties, and 7.5% other difficulties. Majority of 56.6% physicians indicated they prescribed more antibiotics,16.4% sent more blood tests, 24.5% referred more to experts, and 49.7% referred more to imaging in comparison to usual counseling. Higher phone quality score was significantly associated with physicians who indicated not prescribing more antibiotics during the pandemic (OR = 0.30, 95%CI 0.134–0.688, p = 0.004). Higher online quality score was associated with physicians who indicated not sending more blood tests during the pandemic (OR = 0.06 95%CI 0.008–0.378, P = 0.003). Conclusions Our findings suggest telehealth holds considerable promise for counseling in the primary care setting. However, interpersonal challenges raised by physicians should be understood in-depth to develop tailored training and further examine it in randomized trials while integrating patient-reported outcomes. Finally, further research on utility, cost, and cost-efficiency during remote counseling with follow-ups, medical prescribing, and additional referrals is needed.

Current diagnostic criteria for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) do not include symptoms resulting from exposure to ongoing traumatic stress. Thus, existing assessment tools do not fully capture stress symptoms associated with exposure to threats that extend over months or years. We aimed to enumerate the symptoms associated with ongoing exposure to stress and to evaluate the need for a new comprehensive tool designed to assess traumatic stress in these situations. Study methods included focus group sessions, interviews, and a content expert’s workshop. Thematic analysis yielded three main themes: 1. PTSD in its current definition does not capture the whole “traumatic picture” observed in ongoing exposure to threat, 2. Some DSM-5 criteria are not applicable in ongoing exposure to threat, 3. The need for a new tool or modifications of commonly used assessment tools. This study supports the notion that PTSD assessment practices are lacking when assessing traumatic stress in ongoing exposure to threat and highlights the need for a new tool specifically designed for these situations.

Study Objective: The study examined a training program for integrative medicine (IM) providers, teaching clinical skills for treating acute stress disorder (ASD). Methods: A 10‐h online training program, designed by IM and mental health professionals, was attended by a group of 32 IM providers working in supportive and palliative oncology care. Pre‐ and post‐course questionnaires assessed self‐perceived levels of IM and mental health ASD‐related skills (from 1, very low; to 7, very high). Results: Most participants (25; 78%) completed pre‐ and post‐study questionnaires, which showed an increase in post‐course scores for the expectation that IM could reduce ASD‐related pain (p = 0.004). Scores for self‐assessed skill levels increased for treating gastro‐intestinal symptoms and appetite (p = 0.039) and for dyspnea (p = 0.048). A borderline increase for arousal was observed (p = 0.063), with no increase with other arousal symptom cluster symptoms. Conclusions: The ASD‐focused training program for IM practitioners was associated with an increase in self‐perceived levels for related clinical skills quality of life‐related concerns, primarily pain, appetite and dyspnea. Further research is needed to better understand the implications of the findings, and to explore the implementation of the learned skills in clinical practice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Background Denmark and Israel both have highly rated and well-performing healthcare systems with marked differences in funding and organization of primary healthcare. Although better population health outcomes are seen in Israel, Denmark has a substantially higher healthcare expenditure. This has caused Danish policy makers to take an interest in Israeli community care organization. Consequently, we aim to provide a more detailed insight into differences between the two countries’ healthcare organization and cost, as well as health outcomes. Methods A comparative analysis combining data from OECD, WHO, and official sources. World Health Organization (WHO) and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) statistics were used, and national official sources were procured from the two healthcare systems. Literature searches were performed in areas relevant to expenditure and outcome. Data were compared on health care expenditure and selected outcome measures. Expenditure was presented as purchasing power parity and as percentage of gross domestic product, both with and without adjustment for population age, and both including and excluding long-term care expenditure. Results Denmark’s healthcare expenditure is higher than Israel’s. However, corrected for age and long-term care the difference diminishes. Life expectancy is lower in Denmark than in Israel, and Israel has a significantly better outcome regarding cancer as well as a lower number of Years of Potential Life Lost. Israelis have a healthier lifestyle, in particular a much lower alcohol consumption. Conclusion Attempting to correct for what we deemed to be the most important influencing factors, age and different inclusions of long-term care costs, the Israeli healthcare system still seems to be 25% less expensive, compared to the Danish one, and with better health outcomes. This is not necessarily a function of the Israeli healthcare system but may to a great extent be explained by cultural factors, mainly a much lower Israeli alcohol consumption.

Background: Individuals of Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry have been identified as having higher prevalence of specific pathogenic variants associated with susceptibility to specific rare and chronic diseases. In Mexico, the prevalence and composition of rare cancer predisposing germline variants in Ashkenazi Jewish individuals has not been evaluated.Aim and methods: We aimed to evaluate the prevalence of pathogenic variants by massive parallel sequencing in a panel of 143 cancer-predisposing genes in 341 women from the Ashkenazi Jewish community of Mexico, who were contacted and invited to participate in the study through the ALMA Foundation for Cancer Reconstruction. Pre- and posttest genetic counseling was given and a questionnaire on personal, gyneco-obstetric, demographic and lifestyle variables was conducted. From peripheral blood DNA, the complete coding region, and splicing sites of a panel of 143 cancer susceptibility genes, including 21 clinically relevant genes, were sequenced. The Mexican founder mutation BRCA1 ex9-12del [NC_000017.10(NM_007294):c. (825+1–826-1)_(4,589+1–4,590-1)del] was also evaluated.Results: Among study participants (mean age ±standard deviation: 47 ± 14) 15% reported a personal history of cancer (50/341). Fourteen percent of participants (48/341) were carriers of pathogenic and likely pathogenic variants distributed among seven high-risk genes (APC, CHEK2, MSH2, BMPR1A, MEN1, MLH1, and MSH6), whereas 18.2% (62/341) had variants of uncertain clinical significance in genes associated with breast and ovarian cancer susceptibility (list of genes with VUS). Pathogenic and likely pathogenic variants in 16 susceptibility genes with ambiguous or non-well-established risk association for cancer were detected in 17.6% (60/341) of participants. Sixty four percent of participants reported current alcohol consumption compared with the 39 percent prevalence of alcohol consumption in Mexican women. None of the participants carried the recurrent Ashkenazi and Mexican founder mutations in BRCA1 or BRCA2, but 2% (7/341) had pathogenic Ashkenazi Jewish founder variants in BLM.Conclusion: Our findings show a diverse pathogenic variant composition among the recruited individuals of Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry in Mexico consistent with being a high-risk population for genetic diseases, which warrants further investigation to adequately assess the burden of hereditary breast cancer in this group and implement appropriate preventative programs.

SEE FAR CBT is an integrative treatment protocol for PTSD and anxiety disorders which combines CBT, body-mind (somatic experience) and imagery-based (fantastic reality; FR) methods. FR is introduced using associative therapeutic cards (COPE cards) to represent both “a pleasant/safe place” and the re-narrating process of the traumatic story. Although some preliminary evidence exists regarding the impact of COPE cards integration in psychotherapy, further validation is needed as to whether these cards can induce distinct arousal-affective states in the observer. The aim of this study was to examine whether exposure to COPE cards evoke different emotional-psychophysiological states using objective physiological measures reflecting autonomic nervous system responses; hence, to further validate its use as a potentially effective tool within the context of SEE FAR CBT therapeutic process. Ninety-five healthy under-graduate participants were first exposed to high-arousal, negatively-valenced cards and asked to put themselves in a state of emotional/physical arousal. Afterwards, they were exposed to low-arousal, positively-valenced cards and were asked to try to calm and relax to the best of their ability. Heart rate, blood pressure and heart rate variability (HRV) were measured at baseline, at the arousal phase and finally at the relaxation phase. It was found that exposure to arousing negative cards resulted in significant increase in blood pressure and a decrease in HRV, while exposure to relaxing positive cards resulted in significant decrease in blood pressure and an increase in HRV. These findings support the efficacy and utility of associative COPE cards in affecting psychophysiological arousal.

Abstract Among the challenges presented by the SARS-CoV2 pandemic are those related to balancing societal priorities with averting threats to population health. In this exceptional context a group of Israeli physicians and public health scholars (multidisciplinary academic group on children and coronavirus [MACC]) coalesced, examining the role of children in viral transmission and assessing the necessity and consequences of restricted in-class education. Combining critical appraisal and analytical skills with public health experience, MACC advocated for safe and monitored school re-opening, stressing the importance of education as a determinant of health, continuously weighing this stance against evolving COVID-19-risk data. MACC’s activities included offering research-based advice to government agencies including Ministries of Health, Finance, and Education. In a setting where government bodies were faced with providing practical solutions to both decreasing disease transmission and maintaining society’s vital activities, and various advisors presented decision-makers with disparate views, MACC contributed epidemiological, clinical and health policy expertise to the debate regarding school closure as a pandemic control measure, and adaptations required for safe re-opening. In this paper, we describe the evolution, activities, policy inputs and media profile of MACC, and discuss the role of academics in advocacy and activism in the midst of an unprecedented public health crisis. A general lesson learned is that academics, based on the rigor of their scientific work and their perceived objectivity, can and should be mobilized to pursue and promote policies based on shared societal values as well as empiric data, even when considerable uncertainty exists about the appropriate course of action. Mechanisms should be in place to open channels to multidisciplinary academic groups and bring their input to bear on decision-making.

ObjectiveTo assess the potential connection between PCDH12 and brain calcifications in a patient carrying a homozygous nonsense variant in PCDH12 and in adult patients with brain calcifications.MethodsWe performed a CT scan in 1 child with a homozygous PCDH12 nonsense variant. We screened DNA samples from 53 patients with primary familial brain calcification (PFBC) and 26 patients with brain calcification of unknown cause (BCUC).ResultsWe identified brain calcifications in subcortical and perithalamic regions in the patient with a homozygous PCDH12 nonsense variant. The calcification pattern was different from what has been observed in PFBC and more similar to what is described in in utero infections. Objectives: The Conservation of Resources (COR) theory suggests that stress results from threatened or actual loss of resources following significant life events. This study used COR theory as the framework to explore the reflection of loss of resources during the COVID-19 pandemic on psychological distress and resilience, in an adult Jewish Israeli population.Methods: We examined the association between background variables, stress, loneliness, concern, COVID-19-related post traumatic symptoms (PTS), resilience factors and COR via an online survey among 2,000 adults during April 2020.Results: Positive relationships were identified between resource loss and PTS (r = 0.66, p < 0.01), and between resource gain and resilience (r = 0.30, p < 0.01). Psychological variables were significantly associated with PTS and explained 62.7% of the variance, F (20, 1,413) = 118.58, p < 0.001.Conclusion: Loss of resources, stress, loneliness and concern were found to be risk factors for distress and PTS, whereas resilience factors played a protective role. We thus recommend using the COR theory to explore COVID-19 effects elsewhere.
