Coastal observations along the Texas coast are valuable for many stakeholders in diverse domains. However, the management of the collected data has been limited, creating gaps in hydrological and atmospheric datasets. Among these, water and air temperature measurements are particularly crucial for water temperature predictions, especially during freeze events. These events can pose a serious threat to endangered sea turtles and economically valuable fish, which can succumb to hypothermic stunning, making them vulnerable to cold-related illness or death. Reliable and complete water and air temperature measurements are needed to provide accurate predictions of when cold-stunning events occur. To address these concerns, the focus of this paper is to describe the method used to create a complete 10-year dataset that is representative of the upper Laguna Madre, TX using multiple stations and various gap-filling methods. The raw datasets consist of a decade's worth of air and water temperature measurements within the Upper Laguna Madre from 2012 to 2022 extracted from the archives of the Texas Coastal Ocean Observation Network and the National Park Service. Large portions of data from the multiple stations were missing from the raw datasets, therefore a systematic gap-filling approach was designed and applied to create a near-continuous dataset. The proposed imputation method consists of three steps, starting with a short gap interpolation method, followed by a long gap-filling process using nearby stations, and finalized by a second short gap interpolation method. This systematic data imputation approach was evaluated by creating random artificial gaps within the original datasets, filling them using the proposed data imputation method, and assessing the viability of the proposed methods using various performance metrics. The evaluation results help to ensure the reliability of the newly imputed dataset and the effectiveness of the data imputation method. The newly created dataset is a valuable resource that transcends the local cold-stunning issue, offering viable utility for analyzing temporal variability of air and water temperatures, exploring temperature interdependencies, reducing forecasting uncertainties, and refining natural resource and weather advisory decision-making processes. Seagrasses assimilate nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) from their environment over the course of the growing period, reflecting long-term, system-wide environmental conditions. We examined the role of two Texas seagrasses, Halodule wrightii and Thalassia testudinum, as indicators of N and P conditions in the western Gulf of Mexico via their tissue isotopic (δ15N) and stoichiometric (N:P) ratios. Leaf tissue samples were collected from 285 sampling sites in the Lower Laguna Madre from 2011 to 2018. Data were used to develop interpolated maps of δ15N signatures and N:P ratios across the region. We found that higher variability in H. wrightii metrics reflected the higher sensitivity of this species to short term changes in nutrient sources. T. testudinum exhibited a narrower range in isotopic ratios and N:P values (mean standard deviation of 1.6‰ and 11, respectively compared to 2.4‰ and 12.5 for H. wrightii), indicative of its relatively slow leaf turnover. The highest δ15N values (7–9‰) were recorded near the mouth of the Arroyo Colorado, which carries discharges from a large, urbanized region into an otherwise highly oligotrophic lagoon. Elevated N:P ratios in both species (60–80) were prevalent in the upper reaches of the lower Laguna, likely reflecting inorganic-N inputs by large expanses of N-fixing cyanobacterial mats on nearby wind tidal flats. These metrics reveal that seagrass tissues can serve as valuable indicators of inorganic-N sources in low-inflow estuarine systems where freshwater input is negligible or absent for extended periods of time. Dolphins are often individually identified by unique naturally-acquired markings. Identification becomes difficult when markings heal, or new scars appear. As salt accelerates wound healing in many organisms, the diminishment of scars on common bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) residing in varying natural salinities was determined. South Texas contains the only hypersaline lagoon in the USA, located adjacent to hyposaline waters, with genetically distinct populations of dolphins in the two environments. Photographs of dolphin dorsal fins were collected, and scar stability over time was determined and compared by measuring changes in the relative lengths and surfaces of scars. All scars on dolphins in the hypersaline lagoon completely diminished between three to six years, while scars on dolphins in the hyposaline bay ranged in the amount of fading between three to six years. Data from this case study indicate that high salinity may increase the healing speed of wounds on common bottlenose dolphins compared to low salinity, although a larger sample size is needed for robust statistical comparison. The Laguna Madres of Texas, USA, and Tamaulipas, Mexico, are the most important wintering areas for redheads (Aythya americana) as most of the continental population winters in these lagoons. Redheads forage in the saline waters of the Laguna Madre and make daily flights to coastal freshwater ponds on the adjacent mainland to drink. The abundance and spatial distribution of coastal ponds varies depending on precipitation and can influence the foraging pressure on adjacent seagrass meadows. We conducted weekly aerial surveys to monitor coastal pond use by wintering redheads from mid‐October through mid‐March along the entire length of the Laguna Madre of Texas, during 2000–2003 and in 2012–2014. We developed 3 parameters to provide a measure of biological value of each coastal pond to redheads: amount of foraging habitat within 10 km of each pond, water permanence of the pond, and the potential to distribute redheads if inundated. During 101 aerial surveys across 5 years of study, we identified 140 coastal ponds that were used by redheads. We developed a prioritization scheme to identify wetlands that remain inundated in all years and targeted them for conservation protection. We identified those coastal ponds that, if enhanced through increasing their water permanence, would provide additional drinking sites during dry years and help distribute redheads on more foraging habitat, thereby reducing potential overgrazing on seagrass meadows. We identified 3,624 ha of foraging habitat (21.5% of all foraging habitat) in the lower Laguna Madre that had no coastal ponds within a 10‐km radius and, thus, was proximal to potential areas for coastal pond creation. Our results provide guidance for resource managers to protect, enhance, or create coastal ponds to reduce foraging pressure on seagrass meadows in the Laguna Madre and help sustain future populations of wintering redheads. © 2021 The Wildlife Society. The Laguna Madre-Tamaulipas is the world's largest hypersaline lagoon and is equally located in south Texas, USA, and Tamaulipas, Mexico. Over 40% of its American surface area is covered by wind-tidal sand flats containing cyanobacteria as the major autotrophic component of the microbial community. A recent laboratory examination of these microbial mats revealed the presence of a boring, filamentous cyanobacterium which, in culture, 'drilled' through an agar substrate. The observed clockwise/counterclockwise rotation, gliding, and boring ability of the filaments was atypical for any known cyanobacterium. The isolate from Laguna Madre produces nine toxins that were originally described from both marine and freshwater habitats. Presence of a diverse array of bioactive metabolites in our unialgal culture agrees with earlier work demonstrating diverse toxin production by marine cyanobacteria. Initial comparison of this new taxon with its polyphasically closest genus, Oxynema, showed several morphological, physiological, and phylogenetic differences, warranting establishment of a new family Laspinemaceae, containing Perforafilum tunnelli gen. & sp. nov. Seagrasses are critical habitats for the recruitment and growth of juvenile penaeid shrimps within estuaries and coastal lagoons. The location of a seagrass bed within the lagoon can determine the value of a particular bed for shrimp populations. Consequently, differences in the abundance of shrimp can be found in seagrasses depending on their location. As shrimp density increases, density-dependent effects on biological parameters are more likely to occur. However, knowledge about densitydependent processes on shrimp populations in nursery habitats remains limited. The present investigation was undertaken to examine the effects of population density on shrimp condition in two selected seagrass beds, located at different distance from a tidal inlet, one 25 km away (distant) and the other 1 km away (nearby), in a subtropical coastal lagoon. The study was based on monthly samplings during one year in Laguna Madre (Mexico), performing a total of 36 shrimp trawls (100m2 each one) within each seagrass bed (n D 3 trawls per bed per month for 12 months). Shrimp density was related to the proximity to the tidal inlet (higher density was consistently observed in the nearby seagrass bed), which in turn adversely affected the condition of both species studied (Penaeus aztecus and P. duorarum). In this regard, the present study provides the first evidence of density-dependent effects on shrimp condition inhabiting a nursery habitat. Both shrimp species exhibited a negative relationship between condition and shrimp density. However, this pattern differed depending on the proximity to the tidal inlet, suggesting that shrimp populations inhabiting the nearby seagrass bed are exposed to density-dependent effects on condition; whereas, such effects were not detected in the distant seagrass bed. Shrimp density within the distant seagrass bed was probably below carrying capacity, which is suggested by the better shrimp condition observed in that area of the lagoon. Intra and interspecific competition for food items is surmised to occur, predominantly within seagrass beds near the tidal inlet. However, this hypothesis needs to be tested in future studies. This study evaluated intra-annual variations of Cd and Pb concentrations in water from two sites in the central portion of a subtropical coastal lagoon (Laguna Madre) from the Gulf of Mexico. Sites were located at a different distance from the primary river discharge into the lagoon (site 1 at 10 km and site 2 at 30 km). The overall mean Pb concentrations found in the water were 0.37 mg/l and 0.42 mg/l for sites 1 and 2, respectively, whereas Cd levels were 0.04 mg/l for both sites. Significant intra-annual variations (p <0.05) in metal concentrations were only detected for Pb, which showed very similar seasonal variations for both sites. However, no similar seasonal patterns were observed during both study periods. Seagrass meadows in far South Texas are dominated by turtle grass (Thalassia testudinum), and juvenile pinfish (Lagodon rhomboides) are abundant grazers of seagrass epifauna. As they grow, pinfish exhibit an ontogenetic dietary shift and begin consuming increasing amounts of plant material. In this study, contrasting environmental regimes in two seagrass meadows were examined to identify how they might affect pinfish diets, diet shifts, and growth across the growing season. The eastern site was sheltered from prevailing southeasterly winds by a barrier island, while the western site was shallower and subjected to higher wind energy and turbidity. Gut contents from 290 pinfish were quantified from May through October 2016 and multivariate analyses showed strong but overlapping separation of diets and temporal change in feeding habits. Although there were spatial and temporal differences between the two sites, a site by time interaction indicated different temporal trends. Nonetheless, ooze (amorphous detritus) and aquatic invertebrates (primarily amphipods) were the primary diet items consumed at both localities across time. Pinfish at both sites consumed seagrass, which increased in importance as the growing season progressed, although volume and consumption rate did not differ between sites. Growth rates of pinfish were similar at both sites, but pinfish from the western site were larger and fewer in number across the study. Although pinfish diets differed under different environmental regimes, they were generalist consumers in South Texas seagrass meadows with high diet variability that trended towards herbivory in late summer and fall. Grass shrimps Palaemon mundusnovus, P. pugio and P. vulgaris sympatrically inhabit in the Laguna Madre, Mexico. They exhibit very close morphological similarity and overlap in their diagnostic characteristics, which has hindered certainty in their identification and has raised doubt regarding their taxonomic validity. In this work, we analyse intra‐ and interspecific morphometric and meristic variability through a multivariate analysis, and we determine the molecular variation using mitochondrial sequences of the 12S, 16S and COX1 genes to confirm the validity of the three taxa as having distinct lineages or to recognize a smaller number of species with phenotypic plasticity. Our results corroborate the taxonomic validity of the three species; however, there is intraspecific plasticity, interspecific overlap of characteristics and greater morphological and molecular similarity between the species P. mundusnovus and P. pugio, whereas P. vulgaris was better delimited. These species form a monophyletic group but the phylogenetic relationship obtained is discussed. Telson length was the primary variable in the principal components analysis, whereas the length of the propodus of the second pereiopod was the best discriminant. The range of variation reported in the characteristics linked to the rostrum is extended, and its influence on the separation of these species is recognized. The joint application of multivariate analysis from morphological variables and molecular tools is recommended to clarify the taxonomic status of species featuring close morphological similarity and sympatric distribution. Abstract The Crassostrea virginica oyster has biological and economic importance in the Gulf of Mexico, an area with a high extraction and production of hydrocarbons. Exposure to hydrocarbons affects the reproductive processes in bivalves. In C. virginica , the effect of hydrocarbons on the gonad of the undifferentiated organism has not been evaluated to determine the possible damage during the maturation process. To evaluate this effect, RNA-seq data was generated from C. virginica gonads exposed to a 200 μg/L of hydrocarbons at different exposure times (7, 14 and 21 days) and a control treatment (without hydrocarbons). The analysis of the gonad transcriptome showed the negative effect of hydrocarbons on maturation, with a sub-expression of 22 genes involved in different stages of this process. Additionally, genes in the immune system were down-regulated, which may indicate that exposure to hydrocarbons causes immunosuppression in bivalves. A group of oxidative stress genes was also reduced. These data contribute to a better understanding of the effect of hydrocarbons on the reproductive process in bivalves and, at the same time, allow us to identify possible biomarkers associated with hydrocarbon contamination in the gonad of C. virginica. Aside from two samples collected nearly 50 years ago, little is known about the microbial composition of wind tidal flats in the hypersaline Laguna Madre, Texas. These mats account for ~42% of the lagoon’s area. These microbial communities were sampled at four locations that historically had mats in the Laguna Madre, including Laguna Madre Field Station (LMFS), Nighthawk Bay (NH), and two locations in Kenedy Ranch (KRN and KRS). Amplicon sequencing of 16S genes determined the presence of 51 prokaryotic phyla dominated by Bacteroidota, Chloroflexi, Cyanobacteria, Desulfobacteria, Firmicutes, Halobacteria, and Proteobacteria. The microbial community structure of NH and KR is significantly different to LMFS, in which Bacteroidota and Proteobacteria were most abundant. Twenty-three cyanobacterial taxa were identified via genomic analysis, whereas 45 cyanobacterial taxa were identified using morphological analysis, containing large filamentous forms on the surface, and smaller, motile filamentous and coccoid forms in subsurface mat layers. Sample sites were dominated by species in Oscillatoriaceae (i.e., Lyngbya) and Coleofasciculaceae (i.e., Coleofasciculus). Most cyanobacterial sequences (~35%) could not be assigned to any established taxa at the family/genus level, given the limited knowledge of hypersaline cyanobacteria. A total of 73 cyanobacterial bioactive metabolites were identified using ultra performance liquid chromatography-Orbitrap MS analysis from these commu nities. Laguna Madre seems unique compared to other sabkhas in terms of its microbiology.

Hurricanes are not uncommon along the Gulf of Mexico coast, but there are few studies of the effects they have on coastal embayments. Hurricanes Dolly (2008) and Alex (2010) were both Category 2 storms affecting the Lower Laguna Madre (LLM) of Texas. Surveys were performed to assess poststorm water quality after landfall of both storms at up to 18 sample stations. The main difference between storm effects was salinity reduction because of stormwater input from the watershed. Effects from Hurricane Dolly were of short duration and small magnitude, whereas the effects from Hurricane Alex were extensive and lasted more than a month. Differences in spatial patterns in salinity were significantly more pronounced across the LLM than were temporal differences. Precipitation of 50–100 cm caused stormwater discharge to exceed 1000 m s−1 to the LLM during the Alex event and depressed salinity over more than three-fourths (ca. 500 km2) of the estuary for 2 months. Storm-related effects on water-column physiochemistry were persistently lowest near freshwater drains (Arroyo Colorado). Salinity remained less than 5 for more than 2 months during the Alex freshet. Freshwater input from Hurricane Dolly was relatively minor because the storm precipitation was largely restricted to the small Arroyo Colorado watershed. Effects from Alex were delayed but were greater because of the bulk of the precipitation falling in the Rio Grande/Rio Bravo drainage basin in México. The greatest impact from that freshwater disturbance was the loss of seagrasses after prolonged exposure to hyposalinity. Timely information on the extent of open water surfaces and wetland dynamics can be useful for decision makers to rapidly respond to flood or drought events and improve our understanding of large scale eco-hydrological variability. Episodic inundation is an important factor for biological and ecosystem processes and sustains a wealth of ecosystem services. This study tests 14 spectral indices and their appropriate thresholds for water mapping, using 500 m resolution MODIS surface reflectance data for two coastal sites in Mexico. The fraction of water within each MODIS pixel was estimated using 30 m Landsat-derived water masks. The error introduced by upscaling to coarser resolutions as well as the error associated with each index threshold was analyzed through an omission-commission error space. The lowest cost according to a hyperbolic function, and the lowest area difference relative to the reference water area served as criteria for definition of optimal fractions and identification of the most appropriate indices and their optimal thresholds. Our study shows that the normalized difference between the MODIS green (band 4) and short wave infrared (band 6) “MNDWI6” consistently performed best at mapping of water. MNDWI6 showed little variations of the optimal index value (−0.14 ± 0.05) and a low sensitivity to changes in the threshold value. Other useful indices for water extraction identified in this study are the MNDWI5, MSAVI2 and Tasseled Cap Wetness Indices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Seagrasses are sensitive to local environmental conditions such as salinity, the underwater light environment, and nutrient availability. To characterize seagrass coverage and condition, as well as to relate changes in community structure to local environmental and hydrologic conditions, we monitored seagrass communities in the Upper Laguna Madre (ULM), Texas annually from 2011 to 2015. In 2011 and 2012, the lagoon was dominated primarily by Halodule wrightii, with mixed meadows of H. wrightii and Syringodium filiforme located in the northwest of our study area. By 2013, the expansive S. filiforme meadows had disappeared and the species was restricted to the northernmost reaches of the lagoon. The S. filiforme mortality occurred following an extended period of extremely high salinity (salinities 50-70) during a regional drought. Continuous measurements of underwater photosynthetically active radiation and stable carbon isotopic signatures of seagrass blade tissues did not suggest light limitation, and H. wrightii N/P molar ratios near 30:1 were not indicative of nutrient limitation. Based on the absence of strong evidence for light or nutrient limitation, along with the known tolerance of H. wrightii for higher salinities, we conclude that hypersalinity driven by regional drought was likely the major driver behind the observed S. filiforme mortality. With a substantial portion of the global seagrass distribution threatened by drought in the next 50 years, the increased frequency of hypersaline conditions is likely to exacerbate stress in seagrass systems already vulnerable to the effects of rising water temperatures, eutrophication, and sea level rise. Seagrass beds are pivotal in the functioning of coastal ecosystems in terms of productivity, organic matter turnover and nutrient cycling. Aiming to document decay and nitrogen (N) dynamics of turtle grass ( Thalassia testudinum) in a subtropical estuarine system, decomposition patterns of leaves and rhizomes were characterized and compared. Nitrogen usage during decomposition of tissues, and of live tissues and epiphytes growing on live leaves, was also quantified and compared. Stable isotope ratios allowed tracing N within the seagrass bed, following N incorporation into seagrass tissues from the surrounding media (water, sediment). Leaves had a higher N content and decomposed at a faster rate (~6.4 times) compared to rhizomes. Leaching of soluble materials explain the rapid (0-3 days) initial mass loss of leaves (20%) and rhizomes (18%); with a loss of 85 and 56%, respectively, by the end of the study (77 days). Overall, leaves released N while rhizomes immobilized it. Nitrogen concentration was significantly different among live tissues. The main source of N for both seagrass tissues was the sediment, and water column for epiphytes. Differences in decomposition rates among seagrass tissues can be explained by the quality of the substrate and its susceptibility to microbial use. Seagrass leaves and rhizomes are equally important in taking up nutrients from either the water column or the sediments. Sequestration of carbon and nutrients, and sustained productivity of estuaries depend on organic turnover and nutrient remineralization. Decomposition of abundant plant material produced by mangroves and other macrophytes in estuaries occurs in both the sediments and the water column. Early and intense processing could be more common in the water. In a previous study, in situ decomposition rates of Black Mangrove ( Avicennia germinans) leaf litter suspended in the water column differed among four estuaries in south Texas with moderate differences in salinity, water temperature, available nitrogen (N), and tidal flow. A series of microcosm experiments were conducted to determine the influence, within observed ranges in the estuaries, of these water variables on mass loss of mangrove leaf litter over 60 days. High salinity (66 psu) delayed decomposition, but low temperature (20°C) was a retardant at lower salinities (20-43 psu). Water turbulence greatly accelerated mass loss, whereas N additions and the presence of sediments had minimal effects. The faster decomposition observed in the estuaries compared to the microcosms may be explained by the synergistic effect of these and other environmental factors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

he value of submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) as a nursery habitat for penaeid shrimp has been recognised previously; however, the importance of SAV in terms of its distance from a tidal inlet (a site through which shrimp postlarvae migrate into coastal lagoons) has not been evaluated. In the present study, the effect of proximity to a tidal inlet on the relative importance of SAV beds for Farfantepenaeus shrimp was evaluated in the Laguna Madre of Tamaulipas (Mexico). Sampling was performed monthly from February to December 2005, diurnally and nocturnally, in two SAV bed areas, one 25 km (distant) and the other 1 km (nearby) from the inlet. Densities of shrimp (F. aztecus, F. duorarum and F. brasiliensis) were consistently higher in the nearby SAV bed during both the day and night. Water temperature was the most important explanatory variable of shrimp abundance in both SAV beds. The temperature-abundance relationship was negative in all cases, except in the distant SAV bed at night, when shrimp abundance was positively related to dissolved oxygen and salinity. The nearby SAV bed had higher recruit abundance and supported a greater numbers of juveniles and subadults. In contrast, shrimp abundance in the distant SAV bed was apparently limited by recruitment. Cada año, la Laguna Madre recibe aves migratorias invernales, incluyendo a la especie antes mencionada, sin embargo su estabilidad se encuentra amenazada por el cambio de hábitat ocasionado por el dragado que se está realizando en la zona. Los objetivos fueron: 1) determinar la importancia del área invernal, 2) describir la etología y preferencias de sustrato en la alimentación, 3) analizar ítems alimenticios potenciales y describir la diversidad simpátrica asociadas a C. melodus. Se observaron 99 individuos durante el muestreo. Las pruebas de Cochran y Kendall presentaron una alta significancia de la especie con un tipo de sustrato y las pruebas de signos utilizando una distribución binomial indicaron que existe una alta preferencia hacia un tipo de sustrato. La mayor actividad registrada durante el periodo de muestreo fue la de alimentación. Los recursos alimenticios encontrados en las muestras de sedimentos fueron larvas de Dípteros. Las especies simpátricas a C. melodus pertenecen al orden Charadriiformes con dos familias: Charadriidae nueve especies y Scolopacidae dos especies. Por la importancia de la zona, se recomienda proteger Boca Ciega, pues representa sitios de alimentación, protección y descanso para el Chorlo melódico.

The goal of the current study was to document local stakeholder perceptions of ecosystem services provided by coastal habitats and to incorporate values of ecosystem services into an ecosystem-based management plan. A second goal was to identify and quantify ecosystem service supply at the local level, which is a knowledge gap identified by the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment. Ecosystem services were quantified as stakeholder perceptions of values. To identify local stakeholder perceptions of coastal habitat ecosystem services, a workshop was conducted at which stakeholders were asked to complete surveys. Data from the surveys were used to create a spatial representation of the number of ecosystem services provided by habitats in the form of a heat map. Results of the study were incorporated into an ecosystem-based management plan to enable stakeholders and managers to make better-informed decisions regarding priority areas for conservation, preservation, and restoration. The article presents the study which examined the factors that influence the foraging behavior and foraging success of the bird, Reddish egrets (Egretta rufescens). In the study, the effects of such factors as age, color morph, and group size in said behavior were analyzed. The study was conducted in the Laguna Madre of Texas in March 2008-April 2010.

The Laguna Madre of Mexico is the second biggest hypersaline coastal lagoon from the Gulf of Mexico, and supports the most important artisanal shrimp fishery in the country. The population size structure of penaeids from this artisanal fishery was examined, analyzing temporal and interspecific variations. The results indicate that the shrimp fishery in Laguna Madre is supported by three penaeid species (Farfantepenaeus aztecus, F. duorarum, and Litopenaeus setiferus); the consistent presence of F. aztecus and F. duorarum caught throughout the year contrasted with the scarce occurrence of L. setiferus, which exhibited significant fluctuations in its relative contribution to shrimp catches. Significant differences in monthly mean size were observed for the three species. Larger individuals were caught in colder months (November-March); however, the body condition of shrimp was higher in warmer months (April-October). A negative relationship between shrimp size and water temperature was found, which could suggest differences in size at emigration according to temperature fluctuations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Metal-resistant bacteria were isolated from sediments of the Laguna Madre, a rare hypersaline estuary impacted by many anthropogenic compounds, including various metals and metalloids. Bacteria were initially isolated on nutrient agar supplemented with NaCl; random isolates ( n = 100) were tested for metal resistance toward zinc, nickel, chromium, and cadmium using a pour plate disc assay. Metal-resistant cultures were assayed for plasmids that contained naturally-occurring heavy metal resistance genes. Putative metal-resistance plasmids were tested for metal-resistance efficacy by transforming a metal-sensitive strain of Escherichia coli. Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) primers were designed to detect cnrA, part of a nickel-cobalt resistance gene cluster, and restriction endonuclease digests were performed to detect restriction sites within the plasmid. Results showed that many bacterial isolates tested were resistant toward most of the metals used in this study. Among tested bacteria cultures, 34 were resistant to zinc, 64 were resistant to chromium, and 51 resistant to cadmium. Only 8 cultures were resistant to nickel; however, most bacteria were found to be resistant to more than one metal. Several plasmids were found from the bacteria isolates. One plasmid, designated pDZ5, was isolated from a bacterium identified as Bacillus pumilus by 16S rRNA sequencing. Plasmid pDZ5 conferred nickel resistance to the metal-sensitive E. coli strain and was found to contain cnrA as confirmed by PCR amplification. Plasmid pDZ5 was successfully cut with restriction enzymes for potential ligation with reporter genes. The presence, abundance and expression of pDZ5 may prove to be a useful bio-indicator of metal contamination, specifically nickel pollution, in the Laguna Madre due to the fewer number of bacteria that were nickel-resistant compared to other metals. The distribution of North American redheads ( Aythya americana) during winter is highly concentrated in the Laguna Madre of Texas and Tamaulipas, Mexico. Redheads forage almost exclusively in the lagoon and primarily on shoalgrass ( Halodule wrightii) rhizomes; however, they make frequent flights to adjacent coastal ponds to dilute salt loads ingested while foraging. We conducted 63 weekly aerial surveys during October–March 2000–2003 to record use of coastal ponds by redheads. We collected information from used and unused coastal ponds to better understand factors selected by redheads for their dietary fresh water requirements. Coastal ponds used by redheads had greater surface area, percent open water, average depth, and turbidity than unused coastal ponds. Similarly, redheads used coastal ponds with lower salinity and ammonia concentrations than unused ponds. Redheads were observed on coastal ponds >6 km from foraging areas on 95% of surveys during dry conditions in 2000–01, compared to 43% of surveys during moderately wet conditions in 2001–02 and 5% during very wet conditions in 2002–03. Finally, our data suggests that redheads rely on dietary freshwater sources throughout winter and do not reduce visitation to these coastal ponds as winter progresses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

There are more than 15,000 barrier islands in fetch-limited nearshore environments around the world. About half that number are actively evolving (eroding, accreting, migrating) in response to oceanographic processes and are the subject of this study. The remaining half consists of inactive islands protected by surrounding salt marsh or mangroves. Despite their global abundance these islands have not been previously systematically studied or even recognized as a major landform type. More than 70% of fetch-limited barrier islands are found on trailing edge coasts because conditions there are favorable for formation of sheltered waters. Fully 50% are found in the coastal zone of Australia, Mexico, and Russia. We identify eight different types of fetch-limited barrier islands based on genesis and mode of occurrence. Most of the active islands form in estuaries or bays (Spencer Gulf Australia), behind open ocean barrier islands (Pamlico Sound, North Carolina), or on flood tidal deltas of open ocean tidal inlets (Tapora Bank, New Zealand). Others occur on river deltas sheltered by offshore islands (Menderes Delta, Turkey), in sheltered bays with thermokarst topography (Yensei Bay, Russia), and on glacial outwash plains in fjords (Golfo Esteban, Chile). Due to a Holocene sea level drop, some southern hemisphere islands have been stranded above mean sea level and are intermittently active (Maputo Bay, Mozambique); they are only surrounded by water during spring tides and storms. Intermittent islands also form under conditions of high tidal amplitude (Kings Bay, Australia). Fetch-limited barrier islands are much smaller than their open ocean counterparts, averaging roughly 1 km long and 50 m wide and 1 to 2 m maximum elevation. They evolve in similar fashion to ocean barriers except that overwash is almost always the dominant island building process and dune formation is much less important. The two biggest distinctions between open-ocean and fetch-limited barrier islands are (1) complete evolutionary dependence on storms and (2) the important role of salt marsh and mangrove vegetation in controlling the shape and location of fetch limited barrier islands. Stabilized by salt marshes and mangroves, vegetative control is responsible for the irregular shape of some fetchlimited barrier islands and often plays a role in creating the foundation upon which the island evolves. A study of Halodule wrightii in a shallow subtropical Texas lagoon was performed to obtain seasonal data on its physiological ecology. Leaf production and biomass dynamics of H. wrightii were intensively monitored along with the underwater light environment at a 1.2-m depth study site over a 21-month period from June 1995 to February 1997. The annual photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) flux of 6,764 mol m-2 year-1 was more than twice as high as 2,400 mol m-2 year-1, the minimum annual PAR required for maintenance of growth. As light intensity declined, blade chlorophyll a/b ratios increased suggesting that the plants were photo-adapting. Seasonal trends were evident in shoot growth and biomass. Compared to other Halodule populations in Texas, H. wrightii in LLM displayed slow growth and low biomass, high leaf tissue N content, and low C/N ratio but high N/P ratio of 38 suggesting that the plants were phosphorus-limited. We collected 341 northern pintails (Anas acuta) along the lower Texas coast, USA, to investigate dynamics of carcass and digestive tract components during winter to help assess the ability of this region to support wintering pintail populations. Pintails relied more on endogenous lipid and protein reserves during winter of a dry year than a normal to wet year. Carcass fat remained relatively stable during the wet winter; however, pintails catabolized approximately 65% of their lipid reserves between arrival in October and departure at the end of February during the dry winter. Somatic protein mass also declined over both winters as pintails catabolized up to 20% of their muscle mass. Gizzard atrophy explained most of the changes in somatic protein during the wet winter, whereas catabolism of breast muscle also contributed to changes in protein mass during the dry winter. Ingesta-free digestive tract mass was greatest in early December, and then declined abruptly through February during both winters. Pintails departed the lower Texas coast in late February approximately 20% lighter in body mass than when they arrived in autumn. Mid-continent pintails may frequently opt to winter in southerly latitudes where they can maintain minimal endogenous reserves due to the moderate climate, limited human disturbance, and relatively dependable, but often lower-quality food resources. However, potential consequences of pintails initiating spring migration with reduced energy reserves include greater reliance on spring staging and breeding areas to meet their nutrient requirements for migration and reproduction, later arrival on breeding grounds, and reduced survival and reproductive success. Nutrient reserve dynamics of wintering, mid-continent pintails support the need for enhanced conservation of productive spring staging and breeding habitats for this population. Our objective was to evaluate the influence of water quality and sediment chemistry on the survival and growth of Halodule wrightii transplanted onto unconsolidated dredged materials in Lower Laguna Madre, TX. Subsequent to transplanting activities, we measured environmental conditions and seagrass parameters at transplant and natural beds over a 1-yr period. Although water quality characteristics at the transplant and comparison sites were compatible with seagrass growth, transplants failed to survive for more than a few months. Seagrasses at natural sites received high light (>6000 mols m-2 y-1) and exhibited typical patterns of annual growth, biomass and density as well as sediment chemical parameters. In contrast, the estimated annual quantum flux of 2500 to 3200 mols m-2 y-1 at the transplant sites was near the minimum light requirements for H. wrightii. The marginal light environment was a consequence of high turbidity from wind-driven sediment resuspension. Sediment erosion at the transplant site also resulted in a 30 cm increase in water depth. Sediment NH4+ concentrations at the transplant sites were at or above the maximum values for Texas seagrasses (up to 600 μM). Although NH4+ is generally considered a nutrient, recent evidence suggests that moderate to high NH4+ concentrations can be toxic to below ground tissues. We hypothesize that substrate loss, chronic stress from elevated sediment NH4+ levels coupled with minimal light caused the demise of the H. wrightii transplants. Consequently, this work illustrates the importance of site history and sediment biogeochemistry as factors that control the success of seagrass transplanting efforts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Spotted seatrout are capable of spawning in a wide range of salinities. Along the Texas Gulf Coast, bay salinities increase from an average of 14 ppt in Galveston Bay to an average of 40 ppt in Lower Laguna Madre due to the negative gradient of freshwater inflow from north to south. Tagging studies have shown that the majority of spotted seatrout do not migrate between adjacent bay systems. Spawning salinity has been shown to affect many properties of eggs including the diameter and salinity of neutral buoyancy. Spotted seatrout from two historically different salinity regimes (Matagorda Bay (MB) and Upper Laguna Madre (ULM)) were kept in the laboratory and induced to spawn in three salinities: 20, 30, and 40 ppt. The purpose of this study was to evaluate eggs at each of the three salinities and between the two bay systems. Two-way ANOVA showed a significant effect on the egg diameter of bay and spawning salinity, and a significant interaction between bays and spawning salinity. No significant difference in size at hatch was found between spawning salinities or between bays. Hatch rates in spawning salinity were >90% in all cases. Regression of wet weight on spawning salinity was highly significant for both bays. Eggs spawned in 20 ppt have the largest wet weight and eggs spawned in 40 ppt have the smallest wet weight, irrespective of parental bay origin. Percentage of water varied between 92% for 20 ppt spawned eggs and 86% in 40 ppt spawned eggs. Neutral Buoyancy Salinity (NBS) of eggs increased with increasing spawning salinity. Eggs spawned by the Upper Laguna Madre fish held at 20 ppt were not positively buoyant at 20 ppt. Aside from two samples collected nearly 50 years ago, little is known about the microbial composition of wind tidal flats in the hypersaline Laguna Madre, Texas. These mats account for ~42% of the lagoon's area. These microbial communities were sampled at four locations that historically had mats in the Laguna Madre, including Laguna Madre Field Station (LMFS), Nighthawk Bay (NH), and two locations in Kenedy Ranch (KRN and KRS). Amplicon sequencing of 16S genes determined the presence of 51 prokaryotic phyla dominated by Bacteroidota, Chloroflexi, Cyanobacteria, Desulfobacteria, Firmicutes, Halobacteria, and Proteobacteria. The microbial community structure of NH and KR is significantly different to LMFS, in which Bacteroidota and Proteobacteria were most abundant. Twenty-three cyanobacterial taxa were identified via genomic analysis, whereas 45 cyanobacterial taxa were identified using morphological analysis, containing large filamentous forms on the surface, and smaller, motile filamentous and coccoid forms in subsurface mat layers. Sample sites were dominated by species in Oscillatoriaceae (i.e., Lyngbya) and Coleofasciculaceae (i.e., Coleofasciculus). Most cyanobacterial sequences (~35%) could not be assigned to any established taxa at the family/genus level, given the limited knowledge of hypersaline cyanobacteria. A total of 73 cyanobacterial bioactive metabolites were identified using ultra performance liquid chromatography-Orbitrap MS analysis from these commu nities. Many species of coastal waterbirds have faced population declines in recent years as a result of loss and degradation of habitat. The creation of new habitat through strategic placement of dredge spoil can be an effective tool to mitigate habitat loss. The use of dredge spoil islands for nesting, wintering, and migratory stopover habitat by waterbirds has been documented extensively over the past several decades. Most of the reddish egret (Egretta rufescens) breeding population in the United States occurs in Texas, where it has declined by more than 30% since the 1970s. Reddish egrets breed on dredge spoil islands along the Texas coast, and the stability of breeding colonies has been variable since the 1970s. If nesting habitat is degraded or limiting in Texas, the creation of new nesting islands through strategic dredge spoil placement could benefit reddish egrets. We developed a spatially explicit prioritization model for targeted conservation of reddish egrets in the Laguna Madre, Texas, through colonial island establishment using dredge spoil. Prioritization is based on availability of foraging areas, potential competition at foraging areas, and distance of potential sites to the mainland. 'Priority areas' are potential nesting island locations that would maximize the foraging benefits for breeding reddish egrets. Model outputs show that highest priority areas in the Laguna Madre are located in the southernmost portion of the lagoon. Other priority areas are located in the lower Laguna Madre, and at the mouth of Baffin Bay. In addition, we provide a repeatable and transparent framework for the development of spatial support tools that help guide targeted placement of dredge spoil in an effort to conserve colonial waterbirds. We illustrate the model development for reddish egrets, a threatened species in Texas, however our framework can be applied to other similar species. • A prioritization model was developed for Laguna Madre, Texas, for dredge spoil placement that benefits reddish egrets. • The model used variables based on reddish egret breeding and foraging ecology. • 33,851 ha within the Laguna Madre were prioritized for colonial breeding island establishment. • The highest priority areas accounted for 37% (16,785 ha) of the total prioritized area. • High priority areas were located in the lower Laguna Madre.
