Search

Understanding the dust content of galaxies, its evolution with redshift and its relationship to stars and star formation is fundamental for our understanding of galaxy evolution. Using the ALMA Lensing Cluster Survey (ALCS) wide-area band-6 continuum dataset ($\sim\,$110 arcmin$^2$ across 33 lensing clusters), we aimed at constraining the dust mass evolution with redshift, stellar mass and star formation rate (SFR). After binning sources according to redshift, SFR and stellar mass -- extracted from an HST-IRAC catalog -- we performed a set of continuum stacking analyses in the image domain using \textsc{LineStacker} on sources between $z=1$ and $z=5$, further improving the depth of our data. The large field of view provided by the ALCS allows us to reach a final sample of $\sim4000$ galaxies with known coordinates and SED-derived physical parameters. We stack sources with SFR between $10^{-3}$ and $10^{3}$ M$_\odot$ per year, and stellar mass between $10^{8}$ and $10^{12}$ M$_\odot$, splitting them in different stellar mass and SFR bins. Through stacking we retrieve the continuum 1.2\,mm flux, a known dust mass tracer, allowing us to derive the dust mass evolution with redshift and its relation with SFR and stellar mass. We observe clear continuum detections in the majority of the subsamples. From the non detections we derive 3-$\sigma$ upper limits. We observe a steady decline in the average dust mass with redshift. Moreover, sources with higher stellar mass or SFR have higher dust mass on average, allowing us to derive scaling relations. Our results are mostly in good agreement with models at $z\sim1$-3, but indicate typically lower dust-mass than predicted at higher redshift.

We present a comprehensive study of the star formation histories of massive-quenched galaxies at $z=3$ in 3 semi-analytic models (SHARK, GAEA, GALFORM) and 3 cosmological hydrodynamical simulations (EAGLE, Illustris-TNG, Simba). We study the predicted number density and stellar mass function of massive-quenched galaxies, their formation and quenching timescales and star-formation properties of their progenitors. Predictions are disparate in all these diagnostics, for instance: (i) some simulations reproduce the observed number density of very massive-quenched galaxies ($>10^{11}\rm M_{\odot}$) but underpredict the high density of intermediate-mass ones, while others fit well the lower masses but underpredict the higher ones; (ii) In most simulations, except for GAEA and EAGLE, most massive-quenched galaxies had starburst periods, with the most intense ones happening at $4300\rm M_{\odot}\,yr^{-1}$; (iii) quenching timescales are in the range $\approx 20-150$~Myr depending on the simulation; among other differences. These disparate predictions can be tied to the adopted Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) feedback model. For instance, the explicit black-hole (BH) mass dependence to trigger the "radio mode" in Illustris-TNG and Simba makes it difficult to produce quenched galaxies with intermediate stellar masses, also leading to higher baryon collapse efficiencies ($\approx 15-30$%); while the strong bolometric luminosity dependence of the AGN outflow rate in GAEA leads to BHs of modest mass quenching galaxies. Current observations are unable to distinguish between these different predictions due to the small sample sizes. Schwarzschild dynamical models are now regularly employed in large surveys of galaxies in the local and distant Universe to derive information on galaxies' intrinsic properties such as their orbital structure and their (dark matter and stellar) mass distribution. Comparing the internal orbital structures and mass distributions of galaxies in the distant Universe with simulations is key to understanding what physical processes are responsible for shaping galaxy properties. However it is first crucial to understand whether observationally derived properties are directly comparable with intrinsic ones in simulations. To assess this, we build Schwarzschild dynamical models for MUSE-like IFS cubes (constructed to be like those obtained by the MAGPI survey) of 75 galaxies at z ~ 0.3 from the Eagle simulations. We compare the true particle-derived properties with the galaxies' model-derived properties. In general, we find that the models can recover the true galaxy properties qualitatively well, with the exception of the enclosed dark matter, where we find a median offset of 48%, which is due to the assumed NFW profile not being able to reproduce the dark matter distribution in the inner region of the galaxies. We then compare our model-derived properties with Schwarzschild models-derived properties of observed MAGPI galaxies and find good agreement between MAGPI and Eagle: the majority of our galaxies (57%) have non-oblate shapes within 1 effective radius. More triaxial galaxies show higher fractions of hot orbits in their inner regions and tend to be more radially anisotropic., Comment: 22 pages. Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We use the Eagle simulation to study the relationship between the stellar haloes of Milky-Way-mass galaxies and their recent merger histories. The stellar mass ratio of the most massive merger that occurred since $z=1$ is strongly correlated with the $z=0$ fraction of ex situ stars in the galaxy, $f_{\rm ex\ situ}$, but is weakly correlated with stellar halo mass fraction, $f_{\rm SH}$, particularly for disc galaxies. Contrary to common belief, our results suggest that disc galaxies with low mass stellar haloes do not necessarily have quiescent merger histories; in fact, roughly one quarter have experienced a merger with stellar mass ratio $> 0.1$ since $z=1$. We demonstrate that the population of disc galaxies with low $f_{\rm SH}$ and active merger histories undergo mergers with satellites whose orbits are more circular than average and are approximately co-planar with the disc; instead of contributing significantly to the stellar halo, these mergers lead to discs that contain a substantial fraction of ex situ stellar mass and are thicker and more extended than those of quiescent galaxies. Such mergers also supply fuel that often incites a significant episode of in situ star formation in the disc. Our results suggest that seemingly quiescent disc galaxies with low-mass stellar haloes actually have diverse merger histories, which limits the extent to which stellar haloes alone can act as observable tracers of the hierarchical assembly of galaxies., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures. Tidal features provide signatures of recent mergers and offer a unique insight into the assembly history of galaxies. The Vera C. Rubin Observatory's Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) will enable an unprecedentedly large survey of tidal features around millions of galaxies. To decipher the contributions of mergers to galaxy evolution it will be necessary to compare the observed tidal features with theoretical predictions. Therefore, we use cosmological hydrodynamical simulations NewHorizon, EAGLE, IllustrisTNG, and Magneticum to produce LSST-like mock images of $z\sim0$ galaxies ($z\sim0.2$ for NewHorizon) with $M_{\scriptstyle\star,\text{ 30 pkpc}}\geq10^{9.5}$ M$_{\scriptstyle\odot}$. We perform a visual classification to identify tidal features and classify their morphology. We find broadly good agreement between the simulations regarding their overall tidal feature fractions: $f_{\text{NewHorizon}}=0.40\pm0.06$, $f_{\text{EAGLE}}=0.37\pm0.01$, $f_{\text{TNG}}=0.32\pm0.01$ and $f_{\text{Magneticum}}=0.32\pm0.01$, and their specific tidal feature fractions. Furthermore, we find excellent agreement regarding the trends of tidal feature fraction with stellar and halo mass. All simulations agree in predicting that the majority of central galaxies of groups and clusters exhibit at least one tidal feature, while the satellite members rarely show such features. This agreement suggests that gravity is the primary driver of the occurrence of visually-identifiable tidal features in cosmological simulations, rather than subgrid physics or hydrodynamics. The CO(1--0) and [\ion{C}{1}](1--0) emission lines are well-established tracers of cold molecular gas mass in local galaxies. At high redshift, where the interstellar medium (ISM) is likely to be denser, there have been limited direct comparisons of both ground state transitions. Here we present a study of CO(1--0) and [\ion{C}{1}](1--0) emission in a sample of 20 unlensed dusty, star-forming galaxies at $z=2-5$. The CO(1--0)/[\ion{C}{1}](1--0) ratio is constant up to at least $z=5$, supporting the use of [CI](1-0) as a gas mass tracer. PDR modelling of the available data indicates a median H$_2$ density of log$(n~[$cm$^{-3}])=4.7\pm0.2$, and UV radiation field log$(G_{\mathrm{UV}} [G$_0$])=3.2\pm0.2$. We use the CO(1--0), [\ion{C}{1}](1--0) and 3mm dust continuum measurements to cross--calibrate the respective gas mass conversion factors, finding no dependence of these factors on either redshift or infrared luminosity. Assuming a variable CO conversion factor then implies [\ion{C}{1}] and dust conversion factors that differ from canonically assumed values but are consistent with the solar/super-solar metallicities expected for our sources. Radiative transfer modelling shows that the warmer CMB at high redshift can significantly affect the [\ion{C}{1}] as well as CO emission, which can change the derived molecular gas masses by up to 70\% for the coldest kinetic gas temperatures expected. Nevertheless, we show that the magnitude of the effect on the ratio of the tracers is within the known scatter of the $L'_\mathrm{CO}-L'_\mathrm{[CI]}$ relation. Further determining the absolute decrease of individual line intensities will require well-sampled spectral line energy distributions (SLEDs) to model the gas excitation conditions in more detail.

In recent years, cosmological hydrodynamical simulations have proven their utility as key interpretative tools in the study of galaxy formation and evolution. In this work, we present a like-for-like comparison between the baryon cycle in three publicly available, leading cosmological simulation suites: EAGLE, IllustrisTNG, and SIMBA. While these simulations broadly agree in terms of their predictions for the stellar mass content and star formation rates of galaxies at $z\approx0$, they achieve this result for markedly different reasons. In EAGLE and SIMBA, we demonstrate that at low halo masses ($M_{\rm 200c}\lesssim 10^{11.5}\, M_{\odot}$), stellar feedback (SF)-driven outflows can reach far beyond the scale of the halo, extending up to $2-3\times R_{\rm 200c}$. In contrast, in TNG, SF-driven outflows, while stronger at the scale of the ISM, recycle within the CGM (within $R_{\rm 200c}$). We find that AGN-driven outflows in SIMBA are notably potent, reaching several times $R_{\rm 200c}$ even at halo masses up to $M_{\rm 200c}\approx10^{13.5}\, M_{\odot}$. In both TNG and EAGLE, AGN feedback can eject gas beyond $R_{\rm 200c}$ at this mass scale, but seldom beyond $2-3\times R_{\rm 200c}$. We find that the scale of feedback-driven outflows can be directly linked with the prevention of cosmological inflow, as well as the total baryon fraction of haloes within $R_{\rm 200c}$. This work lays the foundation to develop targeted observational tests that can discriminate between feedback scenarios, and inform sub-grid feedback models in the next generation of simulations., Comment: 20 pages, 8 figures. The merger history of a galaxy is thought to be one of the major factors determining its internal dynamics, with galaxies having undergone different types or mergers (e.g. dry, minor or major mergers) predicted to show different dynamical properties. We study the instantaneous orbital distribution of galaxies in the Eagle simulation, colouring the orbits of the stellar particles by their stellar age, in order to understand whether stars form in particular orbits (e.g. in a thin or thick disc). We first show that Eagle reproduces well the observed stellar mass fractions in different stellar orbital families as a function of stellar mass and spin parameter at z = 0. We find that the youngest stars reside in a thin disc component that can extend to the very inner regions of galaxies, and that older stars have warmer orbits, with the oldest ones showing orbits consistent with both hot and counter-rotating classifications, which is consistent with the trend found in the Milky-Way and other disc galaxies. We also show that counter-rotating orbits trace galaxy mergers - in particular dry mergers, and that in the absence of mergers, counter-rotating orbits can also be born from highly misaligned gas accretion that leads to star formation., Comment: Submitted to MNRAS, 21 pages

We perform a structural decomposition of galaxies identified in three cosmological hydrodynamical simulations by applying Gaussian Mixture Models (GMMs) to the kinematics of their stellar particles. We study the resulting disc, bulge, and intra-halo light (IHL) components of galaxies whose host dark matter haloes have virial masses in the range $M_{200}=10^{11}$-- $10^{15}\,{\rm M_\odot}$. Our decomposition technique isolates galactic discs whose mass fractions, $f_{\rm disc}$, correlate strongly with common alternative morphology indicators; for example, $f_{\rm disc}$ is approximately equal to $\kappa_{{\rm co}}$, the fraction of stellar kinetic energy in co-rotation. The primary aim of our study, however, is to characterise the IHL of galaxies in a consistent manner and over a broad mass range, and to analyse its properties from the scale of galactic stellar haloes up to the intra-cluster light. Our results imply that the IHL fraction, $f_{\rm IHL}$, has appreciable scatter and is strongly correlated with galaxy morphology: at fixed stellar mass, the IHL of disc galaxies is typically older and less massive than that of spheroids. Above $M_{200}\approx 10^{13}\,{\rm M_\odot}$, we find, on average, $f_{\rm IHL}\approx 0.45$, albeit with considerable scatter. The transition radius beyond which the IHL dominates the stellar mass of a galaxy is roughly $30\,{\rm kpc}$ for $M_{200}\lesssim 10^{12.8}\,{\rm M_\odot}$, but increases strongly towards higher masses. However, we find that no alternative IHL definitions -- whether based on the ex-situ stellar mass, or the stellar mass outside a spherical aperture -- reproduce our dynamically-defined IHL masses., Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures. We present the first look at star formation histories of galaxy components using ProFuse, a new technique to model the 2D distribution of light across multiple wavelengths using simultaneous spectral and spatial fitting of purely imaging data. We present a number of methods to classify galaxies structurally/morphologically, showing the similarities and discrepancies between these schemes. We show the variation in component-wise mass functions that can occur simply due to the use of a different classification method, which is most dramatic in separating bulges and spheroids. Rather than identifying the best-performing scheme, we use the spread of classifications to quantify uncertainty in our results. We study the cosmic star formation history (CSFH), forensically derived using ProFuse with a sample of ~7,000 galaxies from the Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey. Remarkably, the forensic CSFH recovered via both our method (ProFuse) and traditional SED fitting (ProSpect) are not only exactly consistent with each other over the past 8 Gyr, but also with the in-situ CSFH measured using ProSpect. Furthermore, we separate the CSFH by contributions from spheroids, bulges and disks. While the vast majority (70%) of present-day star formation takes place in the disk population, we show that 50% of the stars that formed at cosmic noon (8-12 Gyr ago) now reside in spheroids, and present-day bulges are composed of stars that were primarily formed in the very early Universe, with half their stars already formed ~12 Gyr ago., Comment: 27 pages, 20 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

It may be unsurprising that the most common approach to finding proto-clusters is to search for over-densities of galaxies. Upgrades to submillimetre (submm) interferometers and the advent of the James Webb Space Telescope will soon offer the opportunity to find more distant candidate proto-clusters in deep sky surveys without any spectroscopic confirmation. In this letter, we report the serendipitous discovery of an extremely dense region centred on the blazar, J0217-0820, at z=0.6 in the ALMACAL sky survey. Its density is eight times higher than that predicted by blind submm surveys. Among the seven submm-bright galaxies, three are as bright as conventional single-dish submm galaxies, with S_870um > 3mJy. The over-density is thus comparable to the densest known and confirmed proto-cluster cores. However, their spectra betray a wide range of redshifts. We investigate the likelihood of line-of-sight projection effects using light cones from cosmological simulations, finding that the deeper we search, the higher the chance that we will suffer from such projection effects. The extreme over-density around J0217-0820 demonstrates the strong cosmic variance we may encounter in the deep submm surveys. Thus, we should also question the fidelity of galaxy proto-cluster candidates selected via over-densities of galaxies, where the negative K correction eases the detection of dusty galaxies along an extraordinarily extended line of sight., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, update with the accepted version

We determine the atomic hydrogen (HI) to halo mass relation (HIHM) using Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA survey HI data at the location of optically selected groups from the Galaxy and Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey. We make direct HI detections for 37 GAMA groups. Using HI group spectral stacking of 345 groups, we study the group HI content as function of halo mass across a halo mass range of $10^{11} - 10^{14.7}\text{ M}_\odot$. We also correct our results for Eddington bias. We find that the group HI mass generally rises as a function of halo mass from $1.3\%$ of the halo mass at $10^{11.6} \text{M}_\odot$ to $0.4\%$ at $10^{13.7} \text{M}_\odot$ with some indication of flattening towards the high-mass end. Despite the differences in optical survey limits, group catalogues, and halo mass estimation methods, our results are consistent with previous group HI-stacking studies. We have measured the angular auto-correlation function of near-infrared galaxies in SERVS+DeepDrill, the Spitzer Extragalactic Representative Volume Survey and its follow-up survey of the Deep Drilling Fields, in three large fields totalling over 20 sq. deg on the sky, observed in two bands centred on 3.6 and 4.5 micron. We performed this analysis on the full sample as well as on sources selected by [3.6]-[4.5] colour in order to probe clustering for different redshift regimes. We estimated the spatial correlation strength as well, using the redshift distribution from S-COSMOS with the same source selection. The strongest clustering was found for our bluest subsample, with z~0.7, which has the narrowest redshift distribution of all our subsamples. We compare these estimates to previous results from the literature, but also to estimates derived from mock samples, selected in the same way as the observational data, using deep light-cones generated from the SHARK semi-analytical model of galaxy formation. For all simulated (sub)samples we find a slightly steeper slope than for the corresponding observed ones, but the spatial clustering length is comparable in most cases., Comment: 20 pages, 15 figures, 6 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present the first study of spatially integrated higher-order stellar kinematics over cosmic time. We use deep rest-frame optical spectroscopy of quiescent galaxies at redshifts z=0.05, 0.3 and 0.8 from the SAMI, MAGPI and LEGA-C surveys to measure the excess kurtosis $h_4$ of the stellar velocity distribution, the latter parametrised as a Gauss-Hermite series. Conservatively using a redshift-independent cut in stellar mass ($M_\star = 10^{11}\,{\rm M}_\odot$), and matching the stellar-mass distributions of our samples, we find 7 $\sigma$ evidence of $h_4$ increasing with cosmic time, from a median value of 0.019$\pm$0.002 at z=0.8 to 0.059$\pm$0.004 at z=0.06. Alternatively, we use a physically motivated sample selection, based on the mass distribution of the progenitors of local quiescent galaxies as inferred from numerical simulations; in this case, we find 10 $\sigma$ evidence. This evolution suggests that, over the last 7 Gyr, there has been a gradual decrease in the rotation-to-dispersion ratio and an increase in the radial anisotropy of the stellar velocity distribution, qualitatively consistent with accretion of gas-poor satellites. We present the first statistical study of spatially integrated non-Gaussian stellar kinematics spanning 7 Gyr in cosmic time. We use deep, rest-frame optical spectroscopy of massive galaxies (stellar mass $M_\star > 10^{10.5} {\rm M}_\odot$) at redshifts z = 0.05, 0.3 and 0.8 from the SAMI, MAGPI and LEGA-C surveys, to measure the excess kurtosis $h_4$ of the stellar velocity distribution, the latter parametrised as a Gauss-Hermite series. We find that at all redshifts where we have large enough samples, $h_4$ anti-correlates with the ratio between rotation and dispersion, highlighting the physical connection between these two kinematic observables. In addition, and independently from the anti-correlation with rotation-to-dispersion ratio, we also find a correlation between $h_4$ and $M_\star$, potentially connected to the assembly history of galaxies. In contrast, after controlling for mass, we find no evidence of independent correlation between $h_4$ and aperture velocity dispersion or galaxy size. These results hold for both star-forming and quiescent galaxies. For quiescent galaxies, $h_4$ also correlates with projected shape, even after controlling for the rotation-to-dispersion ratio. We present a statistical study of 180 dust continuum sources identified in 33 massive cluster fields by the ALMA Lensing Cluster Survey (ALCS) over a total of 133 arcmin$^{2}$ area, homogeneously observed at 1.2 mm. ALCS enables us to detect extremely faint mm sources by lensing magnification, including near-infrared (NIR) dark objects showing no counterparts in existing {\it Hubble Space Telescope} and {\it Spitzer} images. The dust continuum sources belong to a blind sample ($N=141$) with S/N $\gtrsim$ 5.0 (a purity of $>$ 0.99) or a secondary sample ($N=39$) with S/N= $4.0-5.0$ screened by priors. With the blind sample, we securely derive 1.2-mm number counts down to $\sim7$ $\mu$Jy, and find that the total integrated 1.2mm flux is 20.7$^{+8.5}_{-6.5}$ Jy deg$^{-2}$, resolving $\simeq$ 80 % of the cosmic infrared background light. The resolved fraction varies by a factor of $0.6-1.1$ due to the completeness correction depending on the spatial size of the mm emission. We also derive infrared (IR) luminosity functions (LFs) at $z=0.6-7.5$ with the $1/V_{\rm max}$ method, finding the redshift evolution of IR LFs characterized by positive luminosity and negative density evolution. The total (=UV+IR) cosmic star-formation rate density (SFRD) at $z>4$ is estimated to be $161^{+25}_{-21}$ % of the established measurements, which were almost exclusively based on optical$-$NIR surveys. Although our general understanding of the cosmic SFRD is unlikely to change beyond a factor of 2, these results add to the weight of evidence for an additional ($\approx 60$ %) SFRD component contributed by the faint-mm population, including NIR dark objects., Comment: ApJS in press, 34 pages, 8 Tables, and 18 Figures (+38 pages, 5 Tables, and 6 Figures in Appendix)

We select and characterise a sample of massive (log(M$_{*}/$M$_{\odot})>10.6$) quiescent galaxies (QGs) at $33$. We compute median rest-frame SEDs for our sample and find the median quiescent galaxy at $3

We present initial results of an ongoing survey with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array targeting the CO($J$ = 1-0) transition in a sample of 30 submillimeter-selected, dusty star-forming galaxies at $z =$ 2-5 with existing mid--$J$ CO detections from ALMA and NOEMA, of which 17 have been fully observed. We detect CO(1-0) emission in 11 targets, along with three tentative ($\sim$1.5-2$\sigma$) detections; three galaxies are undetected. Our results yield total molecular gas masses of 6-23$\times$10$^{10}$ ($\alpha_\mathrm{CO}$/1) M$_\odot$, with gas mass fractions, $f_\mathrm{gas}$=$M_\mathrm{mol}$/($M_*$+$M_\mathrm{mol}$), of 0.1-0.8 and a median depletion time of (140$\pm$70) Myr. We find median CO excitation ratios of $r_{31}$ = 0.75$\pm$0.39 and $r_{41}$ = 0.63$\pm$0.44, with a significant scatter. We find no significant correlation between the excitation ratio and a number of key parameters such as redshift, CO(1-0) line width or $\Sigma_\mathrm{SFR}$. We only find a tentative positive correlation between $r_{41}$ and the star-forming efficiency, but we are limited by our small sample size. Finally, we compare our results to predictions from the SHARK semi-analytical model, finding a good agreement between the molecular gas masses, depletion times and gas fractions of our sources and their SHARK counterparts. Our results highlight the heterogeneous nature of the most massive star-forming galaxies at high-redshift, and the importance of CO(1--0) observations to robustly constrain their total molecular gas content and ISM properties., Comment: 10 pages, 15 figures. The timescales on which galaxies move out of the blue cloud to the red sequence ($\tau^{}_\mathrm{Q}$) provide insight into the mechanisms driving quenching. Here, we build upon previous work, where we showcased a method to reconstruct the colour evolution of observed low-redshift galaxies from the Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey based on spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting with ProSpect, together with a statistically-driven definition for the blue and red populations. We also use the predicted colour evolution from the SHARK semi-analytic model, combined with SED fits of our simulated galaxy sample, to study the accuracy of the measured $\tau^{}_\mathrm{Q}$ and gain physical insight into the colour evolution of galaxies. In this work, we measure $\tau^{}_\mathrm{Q}$ in a consistent approach for both observations and simulations. After accounting for selection bias, we find evidence for an increase in $\tau^{}_\mathrm{Q}$ in GAMA as a function of cosmic time (from $\tau^{}_\mathrm{Q}\sim1$ Gyr to $\tau^{}_\mathrm{Q}\sim2$ Gyr in the lapse of $\sim4$ Gyr), but not in SHARK ($\tau^{}_\mathrm{Q}\lesssim1$ Gyr). Our observations and simulations disagree on the effect of stellar mass, with GAMA showing massive galaxies transitioning faster, but is the opposite in SHARK. We find that environment only impacts galaxies below $\sim10^{10}$ M$_\odot$ in GAMA, with satellites having shorter $\tau^{}_\mathrm{Q}$ than centrals by $\sim0.4$ Gyr, with SHARK only in qualitative agreement. We present a revised measurement of the extra-galactic background light (EBL) at radio frequencies based on a near complete compendium of radio source counts. We present the radio-EBL at 150 MHz, 325 MHz, 610 MHz, 1.4 GHz, 3 GHz, 5 GHz, and 8.4 GHz. In all cases the contribution to the radio-EBL, per decade of flux, exhibits a two-humped distribution well matched to the AGN and star-forming galaxy (SFG) populations, and with each population contributing roughly equal energy. Only at 3 GHz are the source count contributions to the EBL fully convergent, and hence we report empirical lower limits to the radio-EBL in the remaining bands. Adopting predictions from the SHARK semi-analytic model for the form of the SFG population, we can fit the fainter source counts providing measurements of the total contribution to the radio-EBL for the SFG and the AGN populations separately. This constitutes an empirically constrained model-dependent measurement for the SFG contribution, but a fully empirical measurement of the AGN contribution. Using the {\sc ProSpect} spectral energy distribution code we can model the UV-optical-infrared-mm-radio SFG EBL at all frequencies from the cosmic star-formation history and the adoption of a Chabrier initial mass function. However, significant discrepancy remains ($5\times$) between our source-count estimates of the radio-EBL and the direct measurements reported from the ARCADE-2 experiment. We can rule out a significant missing discrete source radio population and suggest that the cause of the high ARCADE-2 radio-EBL values may need to be sought either in the foreground subtraction or as a yet unknown diffuse component in the radio sky.

Previous studies have shown that the normalization and scatter of the galaxy 'main sequence' (MS), the relation between star formation rate (SFR) and stellar mass ($M_*$), evolves over cosmic time. However, such studies often rely on photometric redshifts and/or only rest-frame UV to near-IR data, which may underestimate the SFR and $M_*$ uncertainties. We use MAGPHYS+photo-z to fit the UV to radio spectral energy distributions of 12,380 galaxies in the COSMOS field at $0.5

We present ALMA deep spectroscopy for a lensed galaxy at $z_{\rm spec}=8.496$ with $\log(M_{\rm star}/M_{\odot})\sim7.8$ whose optical nebular lines and stellar continuum are detected by JWST/NIRSpec and NIRCam Early Release Observations in SMACS0723. Our ALMA spectrum shows [OIII]88$\mu$m and [CII]158$\mu$m line detections at $4.0\sigma$ and $4.5\sigma$, respectively. The redshift and position of the [OIII] line coincide with those of the JWST source, while the [CII] line is blue-shifted by 90 km s$^{-1}$ with a spatial offset of $0.''5$ ($\approx0.5$ kpc in source plane) from the JWST source. The NIRCam F444W image, including [OIII]$\lambda$5007 and H$\beta$ line emission, spatially extends beyond the stellar components by a factor of $>8$. This indicates that the $z=8.5$ galaxy has already experienced strong outflows whose oxygen and carbon produce the extended [OIII]$\lambda$5007 and the offset [CII] emission, which would promote ionizing photon escape and facilitate reionization. With careful slit-loss corrections and removals of emission spatially outside the galaxy, we evaluate the [OIII]88$\mu$m/$\lambda$5007 line ratio, and derive the electron density $n_{\rm e}$ by photoionization modeling to be $220^{+170}_{-100}$ cm$^{-3}$, which is comparable with those of $z\sim2-3$ galaxies. We estimate an [OIII]88$\mu$m/[CII]158$\mu$m line ratio in the galaxy of $>4$, as high as those of known $z\sim6-9$ galaxies. This high [OIII]88$\mu$m/[CII]158$\mu$m line ratio is generally explained by the high $n_{\rm e}$ as well as the low metallicity ($Z_{\rm gas}/Z_{\odot}=0.04^{+0.02}_{-0.02}$), high ionization parameter ($\log U > -2.27$), and low carbon-to-oxygen abundance ratio ($\log$(C/O) $=[-0.52:-0.24]$) obtained from the JWST/NIRSpec data; further [CII] follow-up observations will constrain the covering fraction of photodissociation regions., Comment: 27 pages, 11 figures, 5 tables. Galaxies throughout the last 12 Gyr of cosmic time follow a single, universal relation that connects their star-formation rates (SFRs), stellar masses ($M_\star$) and chemical abundances. Deviation from these fundamental scaling relations would imply a drastic change in the processes that regulate galaxy evolution. Observations have hinted at the possibility that this relation may be broken in the very early universe. However, until recently, chemical abundances of galaxies could be only measured reliably as far back as redshift $z=3.3$. With JWST, we can now characterize the SFR, $M_\star$, and chemical abundance of galaxies during the first few hundred million years after the Big Bang, at redshifts $z=7-10$. Here we show that galaxies at this epoch follow unique SFR-$M_\star$--main-sequence and mass-metallicity scaling relations, but their chemical abundance is a factor of three lower than expected from the fundamental-metallicity relation of later galaxies. These findings suggest that galaxies at this time are still intimately connected with the intergalactic medium and subject to continuous infall of pristine gas which effectively dilutes their metal abundances., Comment: Resubmitted version, taking reviewers comments into account

Due to their extremely dust-obscured nature, much uncertainty still exists surrounding the stellar mass growth and content in dusty, star-forming galaxies (DSFGs) at $z>1$. In this work, we present a numerical model built using empirical data on DSFGs to estimate their stellar mass contributions across the first $\sim$10 Gyr of cosmic time. We generate a dust-obscured stellar mass function that extends beyond the mass limit of star-forming stellar mass functions in the literature, and predict that massive DSFGs constitute as much as $50-100\%$ of all star-forming galaxies with M $\ge10^{11}$M$_\odot$ at $z>1$. We predict the number density of massive DSFGs and find general agreement with observations, although more data is needed to narrow wide observational uncertainties. We forward model mock massive DSFGs to their quiescent descendants and find remarkable agreement with observations from the literature demonstrating that, to first order, massive DSFGs are a sufficient ancestral population to describe the prevalence of massive quiescent galaxies at $z>1$. We predict that massive DSFGs and their descendants contribute as much as $25-60\%$ to the cosmic stellar mass density during the peak of cosmic star formation, and predict an intense epoch of population growth during the $\sim1$ Gyr from $z=6$ to 3 during which the majority of the most massive galaxies at high-$z$ grow and then quench. Future studies seeking to understand massive galaxy growth and evolution in the early Universe should strategize synergies with data from the latest observatories (e.g. JWST and ALMA) to better include the heavily dust-obscured galaxy population., Comment: 22 pages, 9 figures, submitted to ApJ

We present a pilot, untargeted extragalactic carbon monoxide (CO) emission-line survey using ALMACAL, a project utilizing ALMA calibration data for scientific purposes. In 33 deep (Texp > 40 min) ALMACAL fields we report six CO emission-line detections above S/N > 4, one-third confirmed by MUSE observations. With this pilot survey, we probe a cosmologically significant volume of ~10^5 cMpc^3, widely distributed over many pointings in the southern sky, making the survey largely insusceptible to the effects of cosmic variance. We derive the redshift probability of the CO detections using probability functions from the Shark semi-analytical model of galaxy formation. By assuming typical CO excitations for the detections, we put constraints on the cosmic molecular gas mass density evolution over the redshift range 0 < z < 1.5. The results of our pilot survey are consistent with the findings of other untargeted emission-line surveys and the theoretical model predictions and currently cannot rule out a non-evolving molecular gas mass density. Our study demonstrates the potential of using ALMA calibrator fields as a multi-sightline untargeted CO emission line survey. Applying this approach to the full ALMACAL database will provide an accurate, free of cosmic variance, measurement of the molecular luminosity function as a function of redshift.

We use the EAGLE cosmological simulations to study the evolution of the vertical velocity dispersion of cold gas, $\sigma_{z}$, in central disc galaxies and its connection to stellar feedback, gravitational instabilities, cosmological gas accretion and galaxy mergers. To isolate the impact of feedback, we analyse runs that turn off stellar and (or) AGN feedback in addition to a run that includes both. The evolution of $\sigma_z$ and its dependence on stellar mass and star formation rate in EAGLE are in good agreement with observations. Galaxies hosted by haloes of similar virial mass, $\rm M_{200}$, have similar $\sigma_z$ values even in runs where feedback is absent. The prevalence of local instabilities in discs is uncorrelated with $\sigma_z$ at low redshift and becomes only weakly correlated at high redshifts and in galaxies hosted by massive haloes. $\sigma_z$ correlates most strongly with the specific gas accretion rate onto the disc as well as with the degree of misalignment between the inflowing gas and the disc's rotation axis. These correlations are significant across all redshifts and halo masses, with misaligned accretion being the primary driver of high gas turbulence at redshifts $z \lesssim 1$ and for halo masses $\rm M_{200} \lesssim 10^{11.5} M_{\odot}$. Galaxy mergers increase $\sigma_z$, but because they are rare in our sample, they play only a minor role in its evolution. Our results suggest that the turbulence of cold gas in EAGLE discs results from a complex interplay of different physical processes whose relative importance depends on halo mass and redshift., Comment: 22 pages, 12 figures. We present SKiLLS, a suite of multi-band image simulations for the weak lensing analysis of the complete Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS), dubbed KiDS-Legacy analysis. The resulting catalogues enable joint shear and redshift calibration, enhancing the realism and hence accuracy over previous efforts. To create a large volume of simulated galaxies with faithful properties and to a sufficient depth, we integrated cosmological simulations with high-quality imaging observations. We also improved the realism of simulated images by allowing the point spread function (PSF) to differ between CCD images, including stellar density variations and varying noise levels between pointings. Using realistic variable shear fields, we accounted for the impact of blended systems at different redshifts. Although the overall correction is minor, we found a clear redshift-bias correlation in the blending-only variable shear simulations, indicating the non-trivial impact of this higher-order blending effect. We also explored the impact of the PSF modelling errors and found a small yet noticeable effect on the shear bias. Finally, we conducted a series of sensitivity tests, including changing the input galaxy properties. We conclude that our fiducial shape measurement algorithm, lensfit, is robust within the requirements of lensing analyses with KiDS. As for future weak lensing surveys with tighter requirements, we suggest further investments in understanding the impact of blends at different redshifts, improving the PSF modelling algorithm and developing the shape measurement method to be less sensitive to the galaxy properties., Comment: 28 pages, 31 figures, 2 tables, minor revisions to match the final accepted version

We study environmental quenching using the spatial distribution of current star-formation and stellar population ages with the full SAMI Galaxy Survey. By using a star-formation concentration index [C-index, defined as log10(r_{50,Halpha}/r_{50,cont})], we separate our sample into regular galaxies (C-index>-0.2) and galaxies with centrally concentrated star-formation (SF-concentrated; C-index<-0.2). Concentrated star-formation is a potential indicator of galaxies currently undergoing `outside-in' quenching. Our environments cover ungrouped galaxies, low-mass groups (M_200<10^12.5 M_sun), high-mass groups (M_200 in the range 10^{12.5-14} M_sun) and clusters (M_200>10^14 M_sun). We find the fraction of SF-concentrated galaxies increases as halo mass increases with 9\pm2 per cent, 8\pm3 per cent, 19\pm4 per cent and 29\pm4 per cent for ungrouped galaxies, low-mass groups, high-mass groups and clusters, respectively. We interpret these results as evidence for `outside-in' quenching in groups and clusters. To investigate the quenching time-scale in SF-concentrated galaxies, we calculate light-weighted age (Age_L) and mass-weighted age (Age_M) using full spectral fitting, as well as the Dn4000 and Hdelta_A indices. We assume that the average galaxy age radial profile before entering a group or cluster is similar to ungrouped regular galaxies. At large radius (1-2 R_e), SF-concentrated galaxies in high-mass groups have older ages than ungrouped regular galaxies with an age difference of 1.83\pm0.38 Gyr for Age_L and 1.34\pm0.56 Gyr for Age_M. This suggests that while `outside-in' quenching can be effective in groups, the process will not quickly quench the entire galaxy. In contrast, the ages at 1-2 R_e of cluster SF-concentrated galaxies and ungrouped regular galaxies are consistent (0.19\pm0.21 Gyr for Age_L, 0.40\pm0.61 Gyr for Age_M), suggesting the quenching process must be rapid., Comment: 20 pages, 18 figures

We use a suite of idealised N-body simulations to study the impact of spurious heating of star particles by dark matter particles on the kinematics and morphology of simulated galactic discs. We find that spurious collisional heating leads to a systematic increase of the azimuthal velocity dispersion ($\sigma_\phi$) of stellar particles and a corresponding decrease in their mean azimuthal velocities ($\overline{v}_\phi$). The rate of heating is dictated primarily by the number of dark matter halo particles (or equivalently, by the dark matter particle mass at fixed halo mass) and by radial gradients in the local dark matter density along the disc; it is largely insensitive to the stellar particle mass. Galaxies within haloes resolved with fewer than $\approx 10^6$ dark matter particles are particularly susceptible to spurious morphological evolution, irrespective of the total halo mass (with even more particles required to prevent heating of the galactic centre). Collisional heating transforms galactic discs from flattened structures into rounder spheroidal systems, causing them to lose rotational support in the process. It also affects the locations of galaxies in standard scaling relations that link their various properties: at fixed stellar mass, it increases the sizes of galaxies, and reduces their mean stellar rotation velocities and specific angular momenta. We present the first measurements of HI galaxy scaling relations from a blind survey at $z>0.15$. We perform spectral stacking of 9023 spectra of star-forming galaxies undetected in HI at $0.23

In the protogalactic density field, diffuse gas and collision-less cold dark matter (DM) are often assumed sufficiently mixed that both components experience identical tidal torques. However, haloes in cosmological simulations consistently end up with a higher specific angular momentum (sAM) in gas, even in simulations without radiative cooling and galaxy formation physics. We refine this result by analysing the spin distributions of gas and DM in $\sim$50,000 well-resolved haloes in a non-radiative cosmological simulation from the SURFS suite. The sAM of the halo gas on average ends up $\sim$40\% above that of the DM. This can be pinned down to an excess AM in the inner halo ($<$50\% virial radius), paralleled by a more coherent rotation pattern in the gas. We uncover the leading driver for this AM difference through a series of control simulations of a collapsing ellipsoidal top-hat, where gas and DM are initially well mixed. These runs reveal that the pressurised inner gas shells collapse more slowly, causing the DM ellipsoid to spin ahead of the gas ellipsoid. The arising torque generally transfers AM from the DM to the gas. The amount of AM transferred via this mode depends on the initial spin, the initial axes ratios and the collapse factor. These quantities can be combined in a single dimensionless parameter, which robustly predicts the AM transfer of the ellipsoidal collapse. This simplistic model can quantitatively explain the average AM excess of the gas found in the more complex non-radiative cosmological simulation., Comment: 16 pages, 13 figures, 2 tables; accepted by MNRAS

Using the EAGLE suite of simulations, we demonstrate that both cold gas stripping {\it and} starvation of gas inflow play an important role in quenching satellite galaxies across a range of stellar and halo masses, $M_{\star}$ and $M_{200}$. By quantifying the balance between gas inflows, outflows, and star formation rates, we show that even at $z=2$, only $\approx30\%$ of satellite galaxies are able to maintain equilibrium or grow their reservoir of cool gas - compared to $\approx50\%$ of central galaxies at this redshift. We find that the number of orbits completed by a satellite is a very good predictor of its quenching, even more so than the time since infall. On average, we show that intermediate-mass satellites with $M_{\star}$ between $10^{9}{\rm M}_{\odot}-10^{10}{\rm M}_{\odot}$ will be quenched at first pericenter in massive group environments, $M_{200}>10^{13.5}{\rm M}_{\odot}$; and will be quenched at second pericenter in less massive group environments, $M_{200}<10^{13.5}{\rm M}_{\odot}$. On average, more massive satellites ($M_{\star}>10^{10}{\rm M}_{\odot}$) experience longer depletion time-scales, being quenched between first and second pericenters in massive groups; while in smaller group environments, just $\approx30\%$ will be quenched even after two orbits. Our results suggest that while starvation alone may be enough to slowly quench satellite galaxies, direct gas stripping, particularly at pericenters, is required to produce the short quenching time-scales exhibited in the simulation., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We explore the properties of central galaxies living in voids using the EAGLE cosmological hydrodynamic simulations. Based on the minimum void-centric distance, we define four galaxy samples: inner void, outer void, wall, and skeleton. We find that inner void galaxies with host halo masses $<10^{12}M_\odot$ have lower stellar mass and stellar mass fractions than those in denser environments, and the fraction of galaxies with star formation (SF) activity and atomic hydrogen (HI) gas decreases with increasing void-centric distance, in agreement with observations. To mitigate the influence of stellar (halo) mass, we compare inner void galaxies to subsamples of fixed stellar (halo) mass. Compared to denser environments, inner void galaxies with $M_{*}= 10^{[9.0-9.5]}M_\odot$ have comparable SF activity and HI gas fractions, but the lowest quenched galaxy fraction. Inner void galaxies with $M_{*}= 10^{[9.5-10.5]}M_\odot$ have the lowest HI gas fraction, the highest quenched fraction and the lowest gas metallicities. On the other hand, inner void galaxies with $M_{*}>10^{10.5}M_\odot$ have comparable SF activity and HI gas fractions to their analogues in denser environments. They retain the highest metallicity gas that might be linked to physical processes that act with lower efficiency in underdense regions, such as AGN feedback. Furthermore, inner void galaxies have the lowest fraction of positive gas-phase metallicity gradients, which are typically associated with external processes or feedback events, suggesting they have more quiet merger histories than galaxies in denser environments. Black hole feedback has been widely implemented as the key recipe to quench star formation in massive galaxies in modern semi-analytic models and hydrodynamical simulations. As the theoretical details surrounding the accretion and feedback of black holes continue to be refined, various feedback models have been implemented across simulations, with notable differences in their outcomes. Yet, most of these simulations have successfully reproduced some observations, such as stellar mass function and star formation rate density in the local Universe. We use the recent observation on the change of neutral hydrogen gas mass (including both ${\rm H_2}$ and ${\rm HI}$) with star formation rate of massive central disc galaxies as a critical constraint of black hole feedback models across several simulations. We find that the predictions of IllustrisTNG agree with the observations much better than the other models tested in this work. This favors IllustrisTNG's treatment of active galactic nuclei - where kinetic winds are driven by black holes at low accretion rates - as more plausible amongst those we test. We measure how the atomic gas (HI) fraction ($f_{HI}={\rm \frac{M_{HI}}{M_{*}}}$) of groups and pairs taken as single units vary with average stellar mass ($\langle {\rm M_*} \rangle$) and average star-formation rate ($\langle {\rm SFR} \rangle$), compared to isolated galaxies. The HI 21 cm emission observation are from (i) archival ALFALFA survey data covering three fields from the GAMA survey (provides environmental and galaxy properties), and (ii) DINGO pilot survey data of one of those fields. The mean $f_{HI}$ for different units (groups/pairs/isolated galaxies) are measured in regions of the log($\langle {\rm M_*} \rangle$) -- log($\langle {\rm SFR} \rangle$) plane, relative to the z $\sim 0$ star-forming main sequence (SFMS) of individual galaxies, by stacking $f_{HI}$ spectra of individual units. For ALFALFA, $f_{HI}$ spectra of units are measured by extracting HI spectra over the full groups/pair areas and dividing by the total stellar mass of member galaxies. For DINGO, $f_{HI}$ spectra of units are measured by co-adding HI spectra of individual member galaxies, followed by division by their total stellar mass. For all units the mean $f_{HI}$ decreases as we move to higher $\langle {\rm M_*} \rangle$ along the SFMS, and as we move from above the SFMS to below it at any $\langle {\rm M_*} \rangle$. From the DINGO-based study, mean $f_{HI}$ in groups appears to be lower compared to isolated galaxies for all $\langle {\rm M_*} \rangle$ along the SFMS. From the ALFALFA-based study we find substantially higher mean $f_{HI}$ in groups compared to isolated galaxies (values for pairs being intermediate) for ${\langle{\rm M_*}\rangle}\lesssim10^{9.5}~{\rm M_{\odot}}$, indicating the presence of substantial amounts of HI not associated with cataloged member galaxies in low mass groups., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. Observations show that the surface brightness of disc galaxies can be well-described by a single exponential (TI), up-bending (TIII) or down-bending (TII) profiles in the outskirts. Here we characterize the mass surface densities of simulated late-type galaxies from the EAGLE project according to their distribution of mono-age stellar populations, the star formation activity and angular momentum content. We find a clear correlation between the inner scale-lengths and the stellar spin parameter, {\lambda}, for all three disc types with {\lambda} > 0.35. The outer scale-lengths of TII and TIII discs show a positive trend with {\lambda}, albeit weaker for the latter. TII discs prefer fast rotating galaxies. With regards to the stellar age distribution, negative and U-shape age profiles are the most common for all disc types. Positive age profiles are determined by a more significant contributions of young stars in the central regions, which decrease rapidly in the outer parts. TII discs prefer relative higher contributions of old stars compared to other mono-age populations across the discs whereas TIII discs become progressively more dominated by intermediate age (2-6 Gyrs) stars for increasing radius. The change in slope of the age profiles is located after the break of the mass surface density. We find evidence of larger flaring for the old stellar populations in TIII systems compared to TI and TII, which could indicate the action of other processes. Overall, the relative distributions of mono-age stellar populations and the dependence of the star formation activity on radius are found to shape the different disc types and age profiles., Comment: 15 pages, 11 figures, 2 Tables. We present the characteristics of 2mm-selected sources from the largest Atacama Large Millimeter and submillimeter Array (ALMA) blank-field contiguous survey conducted to-date, the Mapping Obscuration to Reionization with ALMA (MORA) survey covering 184arcmin$^2$ at 2mm. Twelve of the thirteen detections above 5$\sigma$ are attributed to emission from galaxies, eleven of which are dominated by cold dust emission. These sources have a median redshift of $\langle z_{\rm 2mm}\rangle=3.6^{+0.4}_{-0.3}$ primarily based on optical/near-infrared (OIR) photometric redshifts with some spectroscopic redshifts, with 77$\pm$11% of sources at $z>3$ and 38$\pm$12% of sources at $z>4$. This implies that 2mm selection is an efficient method for identifying the highest redshift dusty star-forming galaxies (DSFGs). Lower redshift DSFGs ($z<3$) are far more numerous than those at $z>3$ yet likely to drop out at 2mm. MORA shows that DSFGs with star-formation rates in excess of 300M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$ and relative rarity of $\sim$10$^{-5}$ Mpc$^{-3}$ contribute $\sim$30% to the integrated star-formation rate density between $32$. Analysis of MORA sources' spectral energy distributions hint at steeper empirically-measured dust emissivity indices than typical literature studies, with $\langle\beta\rangle=2.2^{+0.5}_{-0.4}$. The MORA survey represents an important step in taking census of obscured star-formation in the Universe's first few billion years, but larger area 2mm surveys are needed to more fully characterize this rare population and push to the detection of the Universe's first dusty galaxies., Comment: 42 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We study the origin of misalignments between the stellar and star-forming gas components of simulated galaxies in the EAGLE simulations. We focus on galaxies with stellar masses $\geq 10^9$ M$_\odot$ at 0$\leq$z$\leq$1. We compare the frequency of misalignments with observational results from the SAMI survey and find that overall, EAGLE can reproduce the incidence of misalignments in the field and clusters, as well as the dependence on stellar mass and optical colour within the uncertainties. We study the dependence on kinematic misalignments with internal galaxy properties and different processes related to galaxy mergers and sudden changes in stellar and star-forming gas mass. We found that despite the environment being relevant in setting the conditions to misalign the star-forming gas, the internal galaxy properties play a crucial role in determining whether the gas quickly aligns with the stellar component or not. Hence, galaxies that are more triaxial and more dispersion dominated display more misalignments because they are inefficient at realigning the star-forming gas towards the stellar angular momentum vector.

We apply a spectral stacking technique to Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope observations to measure the neutral atomic hydrogen content (HI) of nearby galaxies in and around galaxy groups at $z < 0.11$. Our sample includes 577 optically-selected galaxies (120 isolated galaxies and 457 satellites) covering stellar masses between 10$^{10}$ and 10$^{11.5}$ M$_{\odot}$, cross-matched with Yang's group catalogue, with angular and redshift positions from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We find that the satellites in the centres of groups have lower HI masses at fixed stellar mass and morphology (characterised by the inverse concentration index) relative to those at larger radii. These trends persist for satellites in both high-mass ($M_{\rm halo} > 10^{13.5}h^{-1}$M$_{\odot}$) and low-mass ($M_{\rm halo} \leqslant 10^{13.5}h^{-1}$M$_{\odot}$) groups, but disappear if we only consider group members in low local density ($\Sigma <$ 5 gal/Mpc$^{-2}$) environments. Similar trends are found for the specific star formation rate. Interestingly, we find that the radial trends of decreasing HI mass with decreasing group-centric radius extend beyond the group virial radius, as isolated galaxies close to larger groups lack HI compared with those located more than $\sim$3.0 $R_{180}$ away from the center of their nearest group. We also measure these trends in the late-type subsample and obtain similar results. Our results suggest that the HI reservoir of galaxies can be affected before galaxies become group satellites, indicating the existence of pre-processing in the infalling isolated galaxies., Comment: 12 pages, 13 figures, 4 tables

The existence of a kinematic morphology-density relation remains uncertain, and instead stellar mass appears the more dominant driver of galaxy kinematics. We investigate the dependence of the stellar spin parameter proxy $\lambda_{R_e}$ on environment using a marked cross-correlation method with data from the SAMI Galaxy Survey. Our sample contains 710 galaxies with spatially resolved stellar velocity and velocity dispersion measurements. By utilising the highly complete spectroscopic data from the GAMA survey, we calculate marked cross-correlation functions for SAMI galaxies using a pair count estimator and marks based on stellar mass and $\lambda_{R_e}$. We detect an anti-correlation of stellar kinematics with environment at the 3.2$\sigma$ level, such that galaxies with low $\lambda_{R_e}$ values are preferably located in denser galaxy environments. However, a significant correlation between stellar mass and environment is also found (correlation at 2.4$\sigma$), as found in previous works. We compare these results to mock-observations from the cosmological EAGLE simulations, where we find a similar significant $\lambda_{R_e}$ anti-correlation with environment, and a mass and environment correlation. We demonstrate that the environmental correlation of $\lambda_{R_e}$ is not caused by the mass-environment relation. The significant relationship between $\lambda_{R_e}$ and environment remains when we exclude slow rotators. The signals in SAMI and EAGLE are strongest on small scales (10-100 kpc) as expected from galaxy interactions and mergers. We examine the effect of using different halo finders and merger tree building algorithms on galaxy properties predicted using the GALFORM semi-analytical model run on a high resolution, large volume dark matter simulation. The halo finders/tree builders HBT, ROCKSTAR, SUBFIND and VELOCIRAPTOR differ in their definitions of halo mass, on whether only spatial or phase-space information is used, and in how they distinguish satellite and main haloes; all of these features have some impact on the model galaxies, even after the trees are post-processed and homogenised by GALFORM. The stellar mass function is insensitive to the halo and merger tree finder adopted. However, we find that the number of central and satellite galaxies in GALFORM does depend slightly on the halo finder/tree builder. The number of galaxies without resolved subhaloes depends strongly on the tree builder, with VELOCIRAPTOR, a phase-space finder, showing the largest population of such galaxies. The distributions of stellar masses, cold and hot gas masses, and star formation rates agree well between different halo finders/tree builders. However, because VELOCIRAPTOR has more early progenitor haloes, with these trees GALFORM produces slightly higher star formation rate densities at high redshift, smaller galaxy sizes, and larger stellar masses for the spheroid component. Since in all cases these differences are small we conclude that, when all of the trees are processed so that the main progenitor mass increases monotonically, the predicted GALFORM galaxy populations are stable and consistent for these four halo finders/tree builders., Comment: 20 pages, 16 figures

Mapping the evolution of galaxy colours, from blue star-forming to red passive systems, is fundamental to understand the processes involved in galaxy evolution. To this end, we reconstruct the colour evolution of low-redshift galaxies, combining stellar templates with star formation and metallicity histories of galaxies from the Galaxy And Mass Assembly survey and \shark\ semi-analytic model. We use these colour histories to robustly characterise the evolution of red and blue galaxy populations over cosmic time. Using a Gaussian Mixture Model to characterise the colour distribution at any given epoch and stellar mass, we find both observations and simulations strongly favour a model with only two populations (blue and red), with no evidence for a third "green" population. We map the evolution of mean, weight, and scatter of the blue and red populations as a function of both stellar mass and lookback time. Using our simulated galaxy catalogue as a testbed, we find that we can accurately recover galaxies colour histories up to a lookback time of $\sim6$ Gyr. We find that both populations show little change in the mean colour for low-mass galaxies, while the colours at the massive end become significantly redder with time. The stellar mass above which the galaxy population is predominantly red decreases by 0.3 dex in the last 5 Gyrs. We find a good agreement between observations and simulations, with the largest tension being that massive galaxies from \shark\ are too blue (a known issue with many galaxy evolution models)., Comment: 23 pages, 16 figures. We extend the local stellar galaxy-(sub)halo connection to the atomic hydrogen (HI) component by seeding semi-empirically galaxies into a large N-body dark matter (DM) simulation. The main input to construct the mock galaxy catalogue are: our constrained stellar mass-to-(sub)halo circular velocity ($M_{\ast}$-$V_{\rm DM}$) relation, assuming a scatter independent of any galaxy property, and the empirical $M_{\rm HI}$ conditional probability distributions given $M_{\ast}$ for central and satellite galaxies. We find that the $\langle\log M_{\rm HI}\rangle-\log M_{\rm DM}$ relation is not a monotonic increasing function. It increases with mass up to $M_{\rm DM}\sim 10^{12}$ $M_{\odot}$, attaining a maximum of $\langle\log(M_{\rm HI}/M_{\odot})\rangle \sim 9.2$, and at higher (sub)halo masses, $\langle\log(M_{\rm HI})\rangle$ decreases slightly with $M_{\rm DM}$. The scatter around it is also large and mass dependent. The bivariate $M_{\rm HI}$ and $M_{\rm DM}$ distribution is broad and bimodal, specially at $M_{\rm DM}\gtrsim 10^{12}$ $M_\odot$, which is inherited from the input $M_{\rm HI}$ conditional distributions. We also report the total (central+satellites) HI gas mass within halos, $\langle M^{\rm tot}_{\rm HI}(M_{\rm DM})\rangle$, as a function of $M_{\rm DM}$. The mean $M^{\rm tot}_{\rm HI}-M_{\rm DM}$ relation is an increasing monotonic function. The galaxy spatial clustering increases weakly as the $M_{\rm HI}$ threshold increases. Our HI mock galaxies cluster more in comparison to the blind HI ALFALFA (Arecibo Fast Legacy ALFA) survey but we show that it is mainly due to the selection effects. We characterize the conditional distributions of the HI gas-to-stellar mass ratio, $R_{HI}\equiv M_{HI}/M_{\ast}$, given the stellar mass, $M_{\ast}$, of local galaxies from $M_{\ast}\sim 10^7$ to $10^{12}$ $M_{\odot}$ separated into centrals and satellites as well as into late- and early-type galaxies (LTGs and ETGs, respectively). To do so, we use (1) the homogeneous "eXtended GALEX Arecibo SDSS Survey", xGASS (Catinella et al. 2018), by re-estimating their upper limits and taking into account them in our statistical analysis; and (2) the results from a large compilation of HI data reported in Calette et al. (2018). We use the $R_{HI}$ conditional distributions combined with the Galaxy Stellar Mass Function to infer the bivariate $M_{HI}$ and $M_{\ast}$ distribution of all galaxies as well of the late/early-type and central/satellite subsamples and their combinations. Satellites are on average less HI gas-rich than centrals at low and intermediate masses, with differences being larger for ETGs than LTGs; at $M_{\ast}>3-5\times 10^{10}$ $M_{\odot}$ the differences are negligible. The differences in the HI gas content are much larger between LTGs and ETGs than between centrals and satellites. Our empirical HI Mass Function is strongly dominated by central galaxies at all masses. Using high-resolution Hubble Space Telescope imaging data, we perform a visual morphological classification of $\sim 36,000$ galaxies at $z < 1$ in the DEVILS/COSMOS region. As the main goal of this study, we derive the stellar mass function (SMF) and stellar mass density (SMD) sub-divided by morphological types. We find that visual morphological classification using optical imaging is increasingly difficult at $z > 1$ as the fraction of irregular galaxies and merger systems (when observed at rest-frame UV/blue wavelengths) dramatically increases. We determine that roughly two-thirds of the total stellar mass of the Universe today was in place by $z \sim 1$. Double-component galaxies dominate the SMD at all epochs and increase in their contribution to the stellar mass budget to the present day. Elliptical galaxies are the second most dominant morphological type and increase their SMD by $\sim 2.5$ times, while by contrast, the pure-disk population significantly decreases by $\sim 85\%$. According to the evolution of both high- and low-mass ends of the SMF, we find that mergers and in-situ evolution in disks are both present at $z < 1$, and conclude that double-component galaxies are predominantly being built by the in-situ evolution in disks (apparent as the growth of the low-mass end with time), while mergers are likely responsible for the growth of ellipticals (apparent as the increase of intermediate/high-mass end)., Comment: 29 pages, 22 figures

We present a revised measurement of the optical extragalactic background light (EBL), based on the contribution of resolved galaxies to the integrated galaxy light (IGL). The cosmic optical background radiation (COB), encodes the light generated by star-formation, and provides a wealth of information about the cosmic star formation history (CSFH). We combine wide and deep galaxy number counts from the Galaxy And Mass Assembly survey (GAMA) and Deep Extragalactic VIsible Legacy Survey (DEVILS), along with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) archive and other deep survey datasets, in 9 multi-wavelength filters to measure the COB in the range from 0.35 micron to 2.2 micron. We derive the luminosity density in each band independently and show good agreement with recent and complementary estimates of the optical-EBL from very high-energy (VHE) experiments. Our error analysis suggests that the IGL and Gamma-ray measurements are now fully consistent to within ~10%, suggesting little need for any additional source of diffuse light beyond the known galaxy population. We use our revised IGL measurements to constrain the cosmic star-formation history, and place amplitude constraints on a number of recent estimates. As a consistency check, we can now demonstrate convincingly, that the CSFH, stellar mass growth, and the optical-EBL provide a fully consistent picture of galaxy evolution. We conclude that the peak of star-formation rate lies in the range 0.066-0.076 Msol/yr/Mpc^3 at a lookback time of 9.1 to 10.9 Gyrs., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Measuring the HI-halo mass scaling relation (HIHM) is fundamental to understanding the role of HI in galaxy formation and its connection to structure formation. While direct measurements of the HI mass in haloes are possible using HI-spectral stacking, the reported shape of the relation depends on the techniques used to measure it (e.g. monotonically increasing with mass versus flat, mass-independent). Using a simulated HI and optical survey produced with the SHARK semi-analytic galaxy formation model, we investigate how well different observational techniques can recover the intrinsic, theoretically predicted, HIHM relation. We run a galaxy group finder and mimic the HI stacking procedure adopted by different surveys and find we can reproduce their observationally derived HIHM relation. However, none of the adopted techniques recover the underlying HIHM relation predicted by the simulation. We find that systematic effects in halo mass estimates of galaxy groups modify the inferred shape of the HIHM relation from the intrinsic one in the simulation, while contamination by interloping galaxies, not associated with the groups, contribute to the inferred HI mass of a halo mass bin, when using large velocity windows for stacking. The effect of contamination is maximal at Mvir~10^(12-12.5)Msol. Stacking methods based on summing the HI emission spectra to infer the mean HI mass of galaxies of different properties belonging to a group suffer minimal contamination but are strongly limited by the use of optical counterparts, which miss the contribution of dwarf galaxies. Deep spectroscopic surveys will provide significant improvements by going deeper while maintaining high spectroscopic completeness; for example, the WAVES survey will recover ~52% of the total HI mass of the groups with Mvir~10^(14)Msol compared to ~21% in GAMA., Comment: 20 pages,16 figures. The inflow of cosmological gas onto haloes, while challenging to directly observe and quantify, plays a fundamental role in the baryon cycle of galaxies. Using the EAGLE suite of hydrodynamical simulations, we present a thorough exploration of the physical properties of gas accreting onto haloes -- namely, its spatial characteristics, density, temperature, and metallicity. Classifying accretion as ``hot'' or `` cold'' based on a temperature cut of $10^{5.5}{\rm K}$, we find that the covering fraction ($f_{\rm cov}$) of cold-mode accreting gas is significantly lower than the hot-mode, with $z=0$ $f_{\rm cov}$ values of $\approx 50\%$ and $\approx 80\%$ respectively. Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) feedback in EAGLE reduces inflow $f_{\rm cov}$ values by $\approx 10\%$, with outflows decreasing the solid angle available for accretion flows. Classifying inflow by particle history, we find that gas on first-infall onto a halo is metal-depleted by $\approx 2$~dex compared to pre-processed gas, which we find to mimic the circum-galactic medium (CGM) in terms of metal content. We also show that high (low) halo-scale gas accretion rates are associated with metal-poor (rich) CGM in haloes below $10^{12}M_{\odot}$, and that variation in halo-scale gas accretion rates may offer a physical explanation for the enhanced scatter in the star-forming main sequence at low ($\lesssim10^{9}M_{\odot}$) and high ($\gtrsim10^{10}M_{\odot}$) stellar masses. Our results highlight how gas inflow influences several halo- and galaxy-scale properties, and the need to combine kinematic and chemical data in order to confidently break the degeneracy between accreting and outgoing gas in CGM observations., Comment: 24 pages, 13 figures. We use a sample of $z=0$ galaxies visually classified as slow rotators (SRs) in the EAGLE hydrodynamical simulations to explore the effect of galaxy mergers on their formation, characterise their intrinsic galaxy properties, and study the connection between quenching and kinematic transformation. SRs that have had major or minor mergers (mass ratios $\ge 0.3$ and $0.1-0.3$, respectively) tend to have a higher triaxiality parameter and ex-situ stellar fractions than those that had exclusively very minor mergers or formed in the absence of mergers ("no-merger" SRs). No-merger SRs are more compact, have lower black hole-to-stellar mass ratios and quenched later than other SRs, leaving imprints on their $z=0$ chemical composition. For the vast majority of SRs we find that quenching, driven by active galactic nuclei feedback, precedes kinematic transformation, except for satellite SRs, in which these processes happen in tandem. However, in $\approx 50$\% of these satellites, satellite-satellite mergers are responsible for their SR fate, while environment (i.e. tidal field and interactions with the central) can account for the transformation in the rest. By splitting SRs into kinematic sub-classes, we find that flat SRs prefer major mergers; round SRs prefer minor or very minor mergers; prolate SRs prefer gas-poor mergers. Flat and prolate SRs are more common among satellites hosted by massive halos ($>10^{13.6}\,\rm M_{\odot}$) and centrals of high masses ($M_{\star} > 10^{10.5}\, \rm M_{\odot}$). Although EAGLE galaxies display kinematic properties that broadly agree with observations, there are areas of disagreement, such as inverted stellar age and velocity dispersion profiles. We present catalogues of stellar masses, star formation rates, and ancillary stellar population parameters for galaxies spanning $02.6$, we see evidence of a bend in the relation at low redshifts ($z<0.45$). This suggests evolution in both the normalisation and shape of the SFR-$M_\star$ relation since cosmic noon. It is significant that we only clearly see this bend when combining our new DEVILS measurements with consistently derived values for lower redshift galaxies from the Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey: this shows the power of having consistent treatment for galaxies at all redshifts., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 28 pages, 20 figures
