- Abstract
A multidimensional extraction of the structure function ratio σLT′/σ0 from the hard exclusive e→p→e′nπ+ reaction above the resonance region has been performed. The study was done based on beam-spin asymmetry measurements using a 10.6 GeV incident electron beam on a liquid-hydrogen target and the CLAS12 spectrometer at Jefferson Lab. The measurements focus on the very forward regime (t/Q2 ≪ 1) with a wide kinematic range of xB in the valence regime (0.17 < xB < 0.55), and virtualities Q2 ranging from 1.5 GeV$^{2}$ up to 6 GeV$^{2}$. The results and their comparison to theoretical models based on Generalized Parton Distributions demonstrate the sensitivity to chiral-odd GPDs and the directly related tensor charge of the nucleon. In addition, the data is compared to an extension of a Regge formalism at high photon virtualities. It was found that the Regge model provides a better description at low Q2, while the GPD model is more appropriate at high Q2.

- Abstract
Exclusive photoproduction cross sections have been measured for the process γp→pπ0[e+e−(γ)] with the Dalitz decay final state using tagged photon energies in the range of Eγ=1.275–5.425 GeV. The complete angular distribution of the final state π0, for the entire photon energy range up to large values of t and u, has been measured for the first time. The data obtained show that the cross section dσ/dt, at mid to large angles, decreases with energy as s−6.89±0.26. This is in agreement with the perturbative QCD quark counting rule prediction of s−7. Paradoxically, the size of angular distribution of measured cross sections is greatly underestimated by the QCD-based generalized parton distribution mechanism at highest available invariant energy s=11GeV2. At the same time, the Regge-exchange-based models for π0 photoproduction are more consistent with experimental data.

Measuring nucleon-nucleon Short Range Correlations (SRC) has been a goal of the nuclear physics community for many years. They are an important part of the nuclear wavefunction, accounting for almost all of the high-momentum strength. They are closely related to the EMC effect. While their overall probability has been measured, measuring their momentum distributions is more difficult. In order to determine the best configuration for studying SRC momentum distributions, we measured the $^3$He$(e,e'pp)n$ reaction, looking at events with high momentum protons ($p_p > 0.35$ GeV/c) and a low momentum neutron ($p_n< 0.2$ GeV/c). We examined two angular configurations: either both protons emitted forward or one proton emitted forward and one backward (with respect to the momentum transfer, $\vec q$). The measured relative momentum distribution of the events with one forward and one backward proton was much closer to the calculated initial-state $pp$ relative momentum distribution, indicating that this is the preferred configuration for measuring SRC., 8 pages, 9 figures, submitted to Phys Rev C. We have measured the 3He(e,e'pp)n reaction at an incident energy of 4.7 GeV over a wide kinematic range. We identified spectator correlated pp and pn nucleon pairs using kinematic cuts and measured their relative and total momentum distributions. This is the first measurement of the ratio of pp to pn pairs as a function of pair total momentum, $p_{tot}$. For pair relative momenta between 0.3 and 0.5 GeV/c, the ratio is very small at low $p_{tot}$ and rises to approximately 0.5 at large $p_{tot}$. This shows the dominance of tensor over central correlations at this relative momentum., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, submitted to PRL

International audience; The first measurements of the polarized structure function σLT′ for the reaction p(e⃗ ,e′K+)Λ in the nucleon resonance region are reported. Measurements are included from threshold up to W=2.05 GeV for central values of Q2 of 0.65 and 1.00 GeV2, and nearly the entire kaon center-of-mass angular range. σLT′ is the imaginary part of the longitudinal-transverse response and is expected to be sensitive to interferences between competing intermediate s-channel resonances, as well as resonant and non-resonant processes. The results for σLT′ are comparable in magnitude to previously reported results from CLAS for σLT, the real part of the same response. An intriguing sign change in σLT′ is observed in the high Q2 data at W≈1.9 GeV. Comparisons to several existing model predictions are shown.

The spin structure functions g_1 for the proton and the deuteron have been measured over a wide kinematic range in x and Q2 using 1.6 and 5.7 GeV longitudinally polarized electrons incident upon polarized NH_3 and ND_3 targets at Jefferson Lab. Scattered electrons were detected in the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer, for 0.05 < Q^2 < 5 GeV^2 and W < 3 GeV. The first moments of g_1 for the proton and deuteron are presented -- both have a negative slope at low Q^2, as predicted by the extended Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn sum rule. The first result for the generalized forward spin polarizability of the proton gamma_0^p is also reported. This quantity shows strong Q^2 dependence at low Q^2, while Q^6\gamma_0^p seems to flatten out at the highest Q^2 accessed by our experiment. Although the first moments of g_1 are consistent with Chiral Perturbation Theory (ChPT) calculations up to approximately Q^2 = 0.06 GeV^2, a significant discrepancy is observed between the \gamma_0^p data and ChPT for gamma_0^p, even at the lowest Q2., Comment: Final version as published in PLB. Added a parametrization of world data at high Q^2 to Fig. 3

The exclusive electroproduction process $\vec{e}p \to e^\prime n \pi^+$ was measured in the range of the photon virtuality $Q^2 = 1.7 - 4.5 \rm{GeV^2}$, and the invariant mass range for the $n\pi^+$ system of $W = 1.15 - 1.7 \rm{GeV}$ using the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer. For the first time, these kinematics are probed in exclusive $\pi^+$ production from protons with nearly full coverage in the azimuthal and polar angles of the $n\pi^+$ center-of-mass system. The $n\pi^+$ channel has particular sensitivity to the isospin 1/2 excited nucleon states, and together with the $p\pi^0$ final state will serve to determine the transition form factors of a large number of resonances. The largest discrepancy between these results and present modes was seen in the $\sigma_{LT'}$ structure function. In this experiment, 31,295 cross section and 4,184 asymmetry data points were measured. Because of the large volume of data, only a reduced set of structure functions and Legendre polynomial moments can be presented that are obtained in model-independent fits to the differential cross sections.

Differential cross sections for the reaction $\gamma p \to K^{*0} \Sigma^+$ are presented at nine bins in photon energy in the range from 1.7 to 3.0 GeV. The \kstar was detected by its decay products, $K^+\pi^-$, in the CLAS detector at Jefferson Lab. These data are the first \kstar photoproduction cross sections ever published over a broad range of angles. Comparison with a theoretical model based on the vector and tensor $K^*$-quark couplings shows good agreement with the data in general, after adjusting the model's two parameters in a fit to our data. Disagreement between the data at forward angles and the global angle-energy fit to the model suggests that the role of scalar $\kappa$ meson exchange in $t$-channel diagrams should be investigated., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, submitted to Phys. The ep -> e'pi^+n reaction was studied in the first and second nucleon resonance regions in the 0.25 GeV^2 < Q^2 < 0.65 GeV^2 range using the CLAS detector at Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. For the first time the absolute cross sections were measured covering nearly the full angular range in the hadronic center-of-mass frame. The structure functions sigma_TL, sigma_TT and the linear combination sigma_T+epsilon*sigma_L were extracted by fitting the phi-dependence of the measured cross sections, and were compared to the MAID and Sato-Lee models., Comment: Accepted for publication in PRC

The exclusive reactions $\gamma p \to \bar K^0 K^+ n$ and $\gamma p \to \bar K^0 K^0 p$ have been studied in the photon energy range 1.6--3.8 GeV, searching for evidence of the exotic baryon $\Theta^+(1540)$ in the decays $\Theta^+\to nK^+$ and $\Theta^+\to p K^0$. Data were collected with the CLAS detector at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. The integrated luminosity was about 70 pb$^{-1}$. The reactions have been isolated by detecting the $K^+$ and proton directly, the neutral kaon via its decay to $K_S \to \pi^+ \pi^-$ and the neutron or neutral kaon via the missing mass technique. The mass and width of known hyperons such as $\Sigma^+$, $\Sigma^-$ and $\Lambda(1116)$ were used as a check of the mass determination accuracy and experimental resolution. Approximately 100,000 $\Lambda^*(1520)$'s and 150,000 $\phi$'s were observed in the $\bar K^0 K^+ n$ and $\bar K^0 K^0 p$ final state respectively. No evidence for the $\Theta^+$ pentaquark was found in the $nK^+$ or $pK_S$ invariant mass spectra. Upper limits were set on the production cross section of the reaction $\gamma p \to \Theta^+ \bar K^0$ as functions of center-of-mass angle, $nK^+$ and $pK_S$ masses. Combining the results of the two reactions, the 95% C.L. upper limit on the total cross section for a resonance peaked at 1540 MeV was found to be 0.7 nb. Within most of the available theoretical models, this corresponds to an upper limit on the $\Theta^+$ width, $\Gamma_{\Theta^{+}}$, ranging between 0.01 and 7 MeV., Comment: 1 tex file (16 pages) + 23 figures (25 eps files)

The reaction $\gamma p \to pK^+K^-$ was studied at Jefferson Lab with photon energies from 1.8 to 3.8 GeV using a tagged photon beam. The goal was to search for a $\Theta^{++}$ pentaquark, a narrow doubly charged baryon state having strangeness S=+1 and isospin I=1, in the $pK^+$ invariant mass spectrum. No statistically significant evidence of a $\Theta^{++}$ was found. Upper limits on the total and differential production cross section for the reaction $\gamma p \to K^-\Theta^{++}$ were obtained in the mass range from 1.5 to 2.0 GeV/c$^2$, with an upper limit of about 0.15 nb, 95% C.L. for a narrow resonance with a mass $M_{\Theta^{++}}=1.54$ GeV/c$^2$. This result places a very stringent upper limit on the $\Theta^{++}$ width., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

PHASE; Inclusive electron scattering off the deuteron has been measured to extract the deuteron structure function F2 with the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. The measurement covers the entire resonance region from the quasielastic peak up to the invariant mass of the final-state hadronic system W~=2.7 GeV with four-momentum transfers Q2 from 0.4 to 6 (GeV/c)2. These data are complementary to previous measurements of the proton structure function F2 and cover a similar two-dimensional region of Q2 and Bjorken variable x. Determination of the deuteron F2 over a large x interval including the quasielastic peak as a function of Q2, together with the other world data, permit a direct evaluation of the structure function moments for the first time. By fitting the Q2 evolution of these moments with an OPE-based twist expansion we have obtained a separation of the leading twist and higher twist terms. The observed Q2 behavior of the higher twist contribution suggests a partial cancelation of different higher twists entering into the expansion with opposite signs. This cancelation, found also in the proton moments, is a manifestation of the "duality" phenomenon in the F2 structure function.

The electromagnetic decays of the Sig0(1385) and Lambda(1520) hyperons were studied in photon-induced reactions gamma p -> K+ Lambda(1116)gamma in the CLAS detector at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. We report the first observation of the radiative decay of the Sig0(1385) and a measurement of the Lambda(1520) radiative decay width. For the Sig0(1385) -> Lambda(1116)gamma transition, we measured a partial width of 479+/-120(stat)+81-100(sys) keV, larger than all of the existing model predictions. For the Lambda(1520) -> Lambda(1116)gamma transition, we obtained a partial width of 167+/-43(stat)+26-12(sys) keV., 15 pages, 19 eps figures, revtex4, accepted for publication Phys. Rev. C. We have studied the quasielastic $^{3}He(e,e'p)^{2}H$ reaction in perpendicular coplanar kinematics, with the energy and the momentum transferred by the electron fixed at 840 MeV and 1502 MeV/c, respectively. The $^{3}He(e,e'p)^{2}H$ cross section was measured for missing momenta up to 1000 MeV/c, while the ATL asymmetry was extracted for missing momenta up to 660 MeV/c. For missing momenta up to 150 MeV/c, the cross section is described by variational calculations using modern 3He wave functions. For missing momenta from 150 to 750 MeV/c, strong final-state interaction effects are observed. Near 1000 MeV/c, the experimental cross section is more than an order of magnitude larger than predicted by available theories. The ATL asymmetry displays characteristic features of broken factorization with a structure that is similar to that generated by available models.

Results of the Jefferson Lab Hall A quasielastic 3He(e,e'p)pn measurements are presented. These measurements were performed at fixed transferred momentum and energy, q = 1502 MeV/c and omega = 840 MeV, respectively, for missing momenta p_m up to 1 GeV/c and missing energies in the continuum region, up to pion threshold; this kinematic coverage is much more extensive than that of any previous experiment. The cross section data are presented along with the effective momentum density distribution and compared to theoretical models., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, updated to reflect published paper: minor text changes from previous version along with updated and added references

As part of a measurement of the cross section of $\phi$ meson photoproduction to high momentum transfer, we measured the polar angular decay distribution of the outgoing $K^+$ in the channel $\phi \to K^+K^-$ in the $\phi$ center-of-mass frame (the helicity frame). We find that s-channel helicity conservation (SCHC) holds in the kinematical range where $t$-channel exchange dominates (up to $-t \sim 2.5$ GeV$^2$ for $E_{\gamma}$=3.6 GeV). Above this momentum, $u$-channel production of a $\phi$ meson dominates and induces a violation of SCHC. The deduced value of the $\phi NN$ coupling constant lies in the upper range of previously reported values., Comment: 6 pages; 5 figures

The differential cross section for electron-induced neutron knockout in the reaction 4He(e,e′n)3He has been measured for the first time with a statistical accuracy of 11%. The experiment was performed in quasielastic kinematics at a momentum transfer of 300 MeV/c and in the missing-momentum range of 25–70 MeV/c. The comparison of the data with theoretical calculations shows an impressive increase of the cross section resulting from final state interaction effects. Specifically , the p−n charge-exchange process dominates the cross section in this kinematical regime. (APS)

The cross section for $\phi$ meson photoproduction on the proton has been measured for the first time up to a four-momentum transfer -t = 4 GeV^2, using the CLAS detector at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. At low four-momentum transfer, the differential cross section is well described by Pomeron exchange. At large four-momentum transfer, above -t = 1.8 GeV^2, the data support a model where the Pomeron is resolved into its simplest component, two gluons, which may couple to any quark in the proton and in the $\phi$., Comment: 5 pages; 7 figures

The result of a feasibility study to measure the II polarization in associated K+-Lambda electro-production is presented. This measurement was performed in the experimental Hall C at Jefferson Lab. The scattered electron was detected in the HMS spectrometer, and the electro-produced kaon and the proton from the Lambda --> p pi(-) decay were both detected in the SOS spectrometer. This quantity is very sensitive to the elementary p(e,e' K)Lambda process and gives information on resonance production, and Regge exchange, among others. The result presented was measured at Q(2) = 1.50 (GeV/c)(2) and cos theta(K gamma)(CM) = 14 degrees. The limits of the Lambda polarization, with respect to the P-gamma X P-K axis, were found to be -0.21 and +0.89 with a confidence level of 68%. The result is compared to theoretical predictions based on an effective hadronic field Lagrangian model and a Regge framework model. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

The cross section of the He-4(e, e''p)H-3 reaction has been measured for missing momenta 220 less than or equal to p(m) less than or equal to 690 MeV/c to study high-momentum components of the nuclear wave function and the reaction mechanism for this transition. The zero predicted in the plane-wave impulse approximation (PWIA) cross section, due to the underlying pt momentum distribution, is found to be washed out. Three types of calculations indicate that this is caused by final-state interactions and contributions from two-body currents. The calculations reproduce the high p(m) (600-690 MeV/c) data, although due to different ingredients in the models.

Coincidence cross sections obtained with the (e, e''p) reaction are presented for the He-4 nucleus. From the measurements, performed in non-parallel kinematics at a relative p-H-3 kinetic energy in the center-of-mass system of 75 MeV, the proton-triton momentum distribution for recoil momenta up to 350 MeV/c has been extracted. The results show a strong dependence on the kinematical configuration. In order to study this in more detail we extended the He-4(e, e''p)H-3 experiments to other kinematics, both parallel and non-parallel, and compare these data to phenomenological and microscopic calculations. The phenomenological treatment consists of a distorted-wave impulse approximation (DWIA) analysis using an optical potential. Charge-exchange effects in the final state are accounted for through coupled-channels calculations using the Lane formalism. These phenomenological calculations do not agree with the data. The microscopic calculation, which employs a diagrammatic treatment including the charge-exchange process (e, e''n)(n, p), proton rescattering effects and the contributions from meson-exchange currents, accounts fairly well for the empirical observations. The momentum dependence of the data is compared with theoretical calculations obtained with the VMC and ATMS variational methods for the Urbana and RSC nucleon-nucleon potentials. The results for the Urbana V14 NN potential, including corrections to PWIA using the microscopic model, are in good agreement with the data. The (e, e''n)(n, p) two-step contribution turns out to be an important ingredient for obtaining a satisfactory description of the He-4(e, e''p)H-3 cross sections. Sum-rule results are presented and the data are compared to results of (p, 2p) and other (e, e''p) experiments.

A serious breakdown of the distorted-wave impulse approximation has recently been observed in the proton-knockout reaction He-4(e,e''p)H-3. In the phenomenological description of the data, charge-exchange contributions were included through a coupled-channel calculation. New data obtained in a wide range of kinematical configurations are presented in order to study the anomaly in more detail. Its magnitude and dependence on momentum transfer are well accounted for by a newly presented microscopic description of various interaction effects, including meson-exchange currents and charge-exchange processes.
