Abstract

Reconstructing the colonization and demographic dynamics that gave rise to extant forests is essential to forecasts of forest responses to environmental changes. Classical approaches to map how population of trees changed through space and time largely rely on pollen distribution patterns, with only a limited number of studies exploiting DNA molecules preserved in wooden tree archaeological and subfossil remains. Here, we advance such analyses by applying high throughput (HTS) DNA sequencing to wood archaeological and subfossil material for the first time, using a comprehensive sample of 167 European white oak waterlogged remains spanning a large temporal (from 550 to 9,800 years) and geographical range across Europe. The successful characterization of the endogenous DNA and exogenous microbial DNA of 140 (~83%) samples helped the identification of environmental conditions favoring long-term DNA preservation in wood remains, and started to unveil the first trends in the DNA decay process in wood material. Additionally, the maternally-inherited chloroplast haplotypes of 21 samples from three periods of forest human-induced use (Neolithic, Bronze Age and Middle Ages) were found to be consistent with those of modern populations growing in the same geographic areas. Our work paves the way for further studies aiming at using ancient DNA preserved in wood to reconstruct the micro-evolutionary response of trees to climate change and human forest management.

National audience; Plusieurs expérimentations ou observations, du semis à l'arbre de grande taille nous ont permis d'établir que des stimulations mécaniques sur le tronc, transmis aux racines, avaient un impact important sur le développement du système racinaire. Et ceci non seulement sur sa biomasse, mais aussi sur l'architecture. A partir d'un modèle architectural relativement stable, l'arbre renforce ainsi sélectivement les segments de racine qui lui permettent d'optimiser la résistance au déracinement. Les arbres adaptent aussi leur système racinaire à la profondeur de sol disponible, à la présence d'un horizon induré ou à une pente. Dans ce dernier cas, on observe une interaction entre géométrie du sol et perturbation mécanique. Enfin, les provenances de pin maritime de la côte atlantique française ont une architecture racinaire à 5 ans (pivot unique et renforcé), leur permettant de mieux résister au vent que les autres provenances de l'aire. La variabilité d'origine génétique intra-population est en revanche faible. Il y aurait donc un effet de sélection naturelle à l'échelle de l'aire de répartition, mais peu de possibilité de sélection à l'intérieur des provenances. [il s'agit d'une synthèse des résultats acquis à Bordeaux pendant une dizaine d'années sur les effets des stimulations mécaniques sur l'architecture des racines de structure, déjà présenté en partie à un séminaire CAQ + une partie présentée à un colloque COST en mai dernier]

Abstract

International audience; An in-depth analysis of remotely sensed data requires the development of theoretical models that predict the physical signals obtained from the vegetation and the soil. Where possible, validation of these models is also required and so far this has been limited. The effort needed to collect and analyse extensive field data is one of the principal reasons for the shortage of models/data comparisons. It has emerged that the introduction of actual measurements into models has become necessary in order to improve the accuracy of the simulation results. This is also the case for each area of research using physical models that utilize description of the canopy (physiology, micrometeorology, etc.). An experiment with the aim of collecting an exhaustive dataset on the structure of the maritime pine was thus undertaken. Discussing the contrasting viewpoints of physicists and physiologists on canopy modelling proved to be very valuable given the diversity of approaches towards tree architecture. This paper sets out to show the key results of this experiment and to display the first conclusions regarding physical modelling in remote sensing studies.
