Abstract

The first U.S. case of transfusion-transmitted human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection reported to CDC since 2002 is reported. The findings from Hemovigilance Module surveillance data are useful for improving the safety of the blood supply in the United States.

Abstract

The article discusses the results of the analyses of data from the National HIV Surveillance System on the numbers, percentages, and rates of HIV diagnoses in African Americans during 2005-2008. It describes how the annual rates of HIV diagnoses per 100,000 adults and adolescents in each racial/ethnic group were calculated. It was found that African Americans accounted for the largest percentage of diagnoses of HIV infection among adolescent and adult males. The analyses indicated that rates of HIV diagnoses rose among African American males.
