Abstract

An experiment to assess the use of an asymmetric wiggler on the Super-Aco storage ring in Orsay to measure magnetic circular x-ray dichroism (MCXD) spectra showed that the experimental setup could obtain good results. The wiggler was inserted to measure circularly polarized x-rays around the orbit planes for nickel, terbium and holmium. The effectiveness of using MCXD spectroscopy is presented.

Abstract

Dust grains in the interstellar medium are known to serve as the first chemical laboratory where the rich inventory of interstellar molecules are synthesized. Here we present a study of the formation of hydroxylamine-NH2OH-via the non-energetic route NO + H (D) on crystalline H2O and amorphous silicate under conditions relevant to interstellar dense clouds. Formation of nitrous oxide (N2O) and water (H2O, D2O) is also observed and the reaction network is discussed. Hydroxylamine and water results are detected in temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) experiments, while N2O is detected by both reflection-absorption IR spectroscopy and TPD techniques. The solid state NO + H reaction channel proves to be a very efficient pathway to NH2OH formation in space and may be a potential starting point for prebiotic species in dark interstellar clouds. The present findings are an important step forward in understanding the inclusion of interstellar nitrogen into a non-volatile aminated species since NH2OH provides a solid state nitrogen reservoir along the whole evolutionary process of interstellar ices from dark clouds to planetary systems. Abstract

A vapor-deposited NH3 ice film irradiated at 20 K with 150 eV photons has been studied with near-edge x-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy at the nitrogen K-edge. Irradiation leads to the formation of high amounts (12%) of molecular nitrogen N2, whose concentration as a function of the absorbed energy has been quantified to 0.13 molecule/eV. The stability of N2 in solid NH3 has been also studied, showing that N2 continuously desorbs between 20 and 95 K from the irradiated ammonia ice film. Weak concentrations (<1%) of other photoproducts are also detected. Our NEXAFS simulations show that these features own to NH2, N2H2, and N3-. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The changes in the structure and composition of vapor-deposited ice films irradiated at 20 K with soft x-ray photons (3–900 eV) and their subsequent evolution with temperatures between 20 and 150 K have been investigated by near-edge x-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (NEXAFS) at the oxygen K edge. We observe the hydroxyl OH, the atomic oxygen O, and the hydroperoxyl HO2 radicals, as well as the oxygen O2 and hydrogen peroxide H2O2 molecules in irradiated porous amorphous solid water (p-ASW) and crystalline (Icryst) ice films. The evolution of their concentrations with the temperature indicates that HO2, O2, and H2O2 result from a simple step reaction fuelled by OH, where O2 is a product of HO2 and HO2 a product of H2O2. The local order of ice is also modified, whatever the initial structure is. The crystalline ice Icryst becomes amorphous. The high-density amorphous phase (Iah) of ice is observed after irradiation of the p-ASW film, whose initial structure is the normal low-density form of the amorphous ice (Ial). The phase Iah is thus peculiar to irradiated ice and does not exist in the as-deposited ice films. A new “very high density” amorphous phase—we call Iavh—is obtained after warming at 50 K the irradiated p-ASW ice. Abstract

Vapor-deposited H[sub 2]O ice films grown between 38 and 150 K under ultrahigh vacuum conditions have been investigated using near-edge x-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy at the oxygen K-edge, in conventional mode—which is bulk sensitive-, and using the photon-stimulated desorption mode (PSD-NEXAFS), which is surface sensitive. By recording simultaneously those two signals, we have evidenced the differences between the surface and bulk electronic and atomic structures, for both amorphous porous ice condensed at 40 K and crystalline ice condensed at 150 K. We have also followed the bulk and surface evolutions of an amorphous ice film annealed from 38 to 147 K. A steep change in the local atomic structure of the bulk is observed, likely related to the high-density amorphous ice→low-density amorphous ice phase transition between 38 and 55 K. We have shown that the surface of crystalline ice is well ordered, but this order is different from that of the bulk. We have evidenced that the H[sub 2]O-H[sub 2]O intermolecular distance at the surface of ice is always longer than in the bulk, and that this difference increases with temperature, as the thermally induced reordering of the surface proceeds. SCF-Xα multiple scattering calculations allow us to figure out those structural differences, both in the bulk and at the surface of amorphous ice, but further calculations are necessary for crystalline ice. We have shown that the PSD-NEXAFS signal is sensitive to the surface morphology that changes with temperature because of the micropores collapse. We have used a model [E. Vichnevetski, A. D. Bass, and L. Sanche, J. Chem. Phys. 113, 3874 (2000)] that quantitatively describes the effect of the surface porosity on the ion yield. The surface of ice at 38 K is well described by a network of vertical cylindrical pores of 20 Å of diameter, separated by 6 Å, collapsing when annealing the film. Abstract

International audience; The steady growth of air traffic and its foreseen expansion during future years have raised concerns about its potential impact on climate and ground-level air quality. So far, the smoke number has been used to evaluate the non-volatile particulate matter amount emitted by aircraft engines, but it is a poor proxy for modern engine emissions. Therefore, new sampling and measurement techniques have recently been tested on aircraft engine emissions, especially as a new ICAO particle emission standard is currently being developed. Number and mass of emitted particles are generally used, but are not sufficient to fully characterize soot emissions and further address atmospheric impact issues. Chemical composition is crucial to evaluate their atmospheric reactivity. This paper presents a complete set of techniques that have been used to characterize soot emissions from an aircraft engine in a comprehensive manner. It reports results from a campaign on a PowerJet SaM146 engine, performed within the framework of the MERMOSE (Mesure et Etude de la Réactivité des émissions de MOteurS aEronautiques) project. It emphasizes the influence of the engine regime, ranging from 30% to 100% of the takeoff thrust, on the various particle properties investigated, including the size, number, morphology and chemical composition.; La croissance soutenue du trafic aérien et son expansion prévue au cours des années à venir soulèvent des inquiétudes quant à son impact potentiel sur la qualité de l'air et le climat. L'indice de fumée jusqu'à présent été utilisé pour évaluer le quantité de matière particulaire non volatile émise par les moteurs d'avion, est un indicateur pauvre des émissions de moteurs modernes. Par conséquent, de nouvelles techniques d'échantillonnage et de mesure ont récemment été testés sur les émissions des moteurs d'aviation, en particulier dans le cadre de la nouvelle norme d'émission de particulesen cours d'élaboration à l'OACI. Nombre et masse des particules émises sont généralement utilisés, mais ne sont pas suffisant pour caractériser complètement les émissions de suie et aborder les questions d'impact atmosphérique. la composition chimique est crucial pour évaluer leur réactivité atmosphérique. Cet article présente un ensemble complet de techniques qui ont été utilisées pour caractériser les émissions de suie à partir d'un moteur d'avion. Abstract

The adsorption state of HCl at 20 and 90 K on crystalline water ice films deposited under ultrahigh vacuum at 150 K is investigated in a study using X-ray absorption spectroscopy at the O1s K-edge and Cl2p L-edge. It is seen that HCl dissociates at temperatures as low as 20 K, in agreement with the prediction of a spontaneous ionization of HCl on ice.

Abstract

Near-edge x-ray-absorption fine-structure (NEXAFS) spectra of 1-butene (C4H8), acrylonitrile (C2H3CN) and 1,3-butadiene (C4H6) multilayers were recorded with high resolution (better than 100 meV at the carbon edge) and a theoretical method to interpret the vibrational structure of the observed C1s→π* bands is presented. The method is based on local (quadratic) approximations for the potential energy surfaces of both ground and excited electronic states, with input data obtained by ab initio calculations of normal modes for the ground state and energy gradients for the excited state within the framework of the equivalent core model. The method proved to be useful in qualitative terms, providing information on the nature of the excited modes and on the geometrical changes following the electronic excitation. We have also calculated the C1s→π* spectrum of ethylene (C2H4) and compared it to those obtained for C4H8, C2H3CN, and C4H6. Since the latter can be considered as substituted ethylenes, the validity of the building-block scheme for the vibrational splittings in inner-shell absorption spectra could be assessed by this comparison. Abstract

Spectroscopic investigations on the electronic structure of thin films of various Zn-porphyrinato/Pt assemblies, consisting of a Zn-porphyrinato (ZnPf) macrocycle inserted between bis(phosphine)platinum(II) centres, were carried out by means of synchrotron radiation-induced near-edge x-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy at the third-generation storage ring ELETTRA and at SuperACO, The spectra of the monomeric ZnPf and of the porphyrin-free base were also investigated for comparison. Modifications occur mainly at the N K-edge, when Zn metallation is carried out, arising from nitrogen deprotonation, and significant changes are also observed upon linkage between subunit.

Abstract

12th International Congress on Plasma Physics, 25-29 October 2004, Nice (France); Laboratory experiments are proposed to understand the growth mechanisms of spherical carbonaceous dust observed in Tokamaks with inside wall elements in graphite materials. The sputtering process is used to form continuous carbon vapours. Their cooling in the plasmas gives rise to carbon clusters which size goes increasing with time. In the nanometer scale range, the obtained primary particles are spherical. They can also agglomerate in the plasma likely by coulomb attraction and form spherical aggregates of higher size. A comparison between the carbon structure of these dust grains and of some dust samples collected on the toroïdal pumped limiter surface of Tore Supra is also proposed. The differences are discussed.
