Purpose: To assess the healing process of the extraction socket and the dimensional changes that occur after alveolar ridge preservation utilizing a polylactide-co-glycolide scaffold (PLGA). Materials and Methods: The present study involved the extraction of 28 teeth from 14 patients. The total number of sockets was 28, which were divided into two groups consisting of 14 test sockets and 14 control sockets. The study group (SG) was subjected to socket preservation with a PLGA scaffold while the control group (CG) was left for spontaneous healing. The dimensions were measured before and after operation at 1, 3, and 5 mm below the alveolar crest horizontally and the height of buccolingual bone vertically. Results: According to the histologic analyses, the PLGA scaffold was resorbed within 4 months. CBCT imaging revealed a decrease in the horizontal crest dimension at three distinct coronoapical levels in SG, measuring 2.05 ± 1.05 mm at -1 mm, 1.51 ± 0.89 mm at -3 mm, and 0.92 ± 0.7 mm at -5 mm. CG showed readings of 1.22 ± 1 at -1 mm, 0.92 ± 0.67 at -3 mm, and 0.73 ± 0.69 at -5 mm. In comparison to CG, SG showed a significant reduction in horizontal losses at -1 mm. Vertical crest dimensions decreased by 1.64 ± 1.11 mm for the buccal bone height and by 1.56 ± 1.08 mm for lingual bone height in SG; in CG, the buccal and lingual bone height had mean values of 2.08 ± 1.44 mm and 1.73 ± 1.27 mm, respectively. There was no statistically significant difference observed in the vertical losses between the groups. Conclusions: Following a period of 4 months, the PLGA scaffold was completely resorbed. Physical function is regarded as the cornerstone of healthy aging, and exercise is an important determinant of healthy aging. This study examined the feasibility and physiological (heart rate, blood pressure, blood lactate, and rate of perceived exertion) and psychological (enjoyment) response resulting from an acute progressive sled-push (SLP) exercise session using the novel XPO Sled Trainer in older adults and compared that with walking (WKC) condition. The exercise session comprised six exercise bouts at 75%, 85%, 100% (2×), and 125% (2×) of normal velocity with a 2-min rest between bouts. Thirty-six older adults were randomly allocated into either the SLP or WKC conditions. No adverse events were observed during the exercise session, and all participants completed the exercise protocol as prescribed. One-third of the participants in the SLP group reported minimal body discomfort. Significantly higher responses were observed for all physiological variables as the intensity of the exercise increased in the SLP group compared with the WKC group (p <.001). The SLP group presented a decline in enjoyment as the intensity of the exercise increased (during), but similar enjoyment level than the WKC group for the overall exercise session (p =.711). Our findings support the viability and safety of SLP exercise using the XPO Sled Trainer in older adults. Such exercise demonstrated an intensity-driven modality that may have potential to elucidate positive adaptations in the cardiovascular system of older adults with acceptable levels of enjoyment. The skin microbiome plays a pivotal role in the production of attractive cues detected by mosquitoes. Here, we leveraged recent advances in genetic engineering to significantly reduce the production of L-(+)-lactic acid as a strategy to reduce mosquito attraction to the highly prominent skin commensals Staphylococcus epidermidis and Corynebacterium amycolatum. Engraftment of these engineered bacteria onto the skin of mice reduced mosquito attraction and feeding for up to 11 uninterrupted days, which is considerably longer than the several hours of protection conferred by the leading chemical repellent N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide. Taken together, our findings demonstrate engineering the skin microbiome to reduce attractive volatiles represents an innovative untapped strategy to reduce vector attraction, preventing bites, and pathogen transmission. These findings set the stage for new classes of long-lasting microbiome-based repellent products.

Dietary glucose in excess is stored in the liver in the form of glycogen. As opposed to direct conversion of glucose into glycogen, the hypothesis of the postprandial lactate shuttle (PLS) proposes that dietary glucose uptake is metabolized to lactate in the gut, thereby being transferred to the liver for glycogen storage. In the present study, we provide evidence of a PLS in young healthy men and women. Overnight fasted participants underwent an oral glucose tolerance test, and arterialized lactate concentration and rate of appearance were determined. The concentration of lactate in the blood rose before the concentration of glucose, thus providing evidence of an enteric PLS. Secondary increments in the concentration of lactate in the blood and its rate of appearance coincided with those of glucose, which indicates the presence of a larger, secondary, systemic PLS phase driven by hepatic glucose release. The present study challenges the notion that lactate production is the result of hypoxia in skeletal muscles, because our work indicates that glycolysis proceeds to lactate in fully aerobic tissues and dietary carbohydrate is processed via lactate shuttling. Our study proposes that, in humans, lactate is a major vehicle for carbohydrate carbon distribution and metabolism.

This study investigated the effects of an acute dose (900 mg) of New Zealand Blackcurrant (NZBC) extract on 5-km running performance, alongside associated physiological and metabolic responses. Sixteen trained male runners (age 26 ± 5 years, stature 173.4 ± 7.3 cm, body mass 73.7 ± 6.9 kg, maximal oxygen consumption [ V ˙ O 2 max ] 55.4 ± 6.1 ml·kg−1·min−1) ingested either capsules containing NZBC extract (3 × 300 mg CurraNZ, 315 mg anthocyanins) or a matched placebo (3 × 300 mg gluten-free flour) 2 hr before exercise in a double-blind, randomized, crossover design. Performance time, physiological, and metabolic responses were assessed in a 5-km time trial, preceded by 10-min exercise at the lactate threshold on a treadmill. NZBC extract did not alter the physiological or metabolic responses to exercise at the lactate threshold (oxygen uptake, respiratory exchange ratio, minute ventilation, carbohydrate oxidation, fat oxidation, heart rate, blood lactate, or rating of perceived exertion, p >.05). The 5-km time trial was completed in a faster time in the NZBC extract condition compared with placebo (NZBC: 1,308.96 ± 122.36 s, placebo: 1,346.33 ± 124.44, p =.001, d = −0.23, confidence interval range = [−0.46, 0.00 s]). No differences in physiological or metabolic responses were apparent between conditions for the 5-km time trial (p >.05). Ingesting 900 mg of NZBC extract as an acute dose improves performance in trained male runners without altering physiological or metabolic responses to exercise. Further research is needed to assess a wider range of possible mechanisms (e.g., cardiovascular function, metabolite profiles) to advance insight into improved performance following supplementation. Breast cancer metastasis to the brain is a clinical challenge rising in prevalence. However, the underlying mechanisms, especially how cancer cells adapt a distant brain niche to facilitate colonization, remain poorly understood. A unique metabolic feature of the brain is the coupling between neurons and astrocytes through glutamate, glutamine, and lactate. Here we show that extracellular vesicles from breast cancer cells with a high potential to develop brain metastases carry high levels of miR-199b-5p, which shows higher levels in the blood of breast cancer patients with brain metastases comparing to those with metastatic cancer in other organs. miR-199b-5p targets solute carrier transporters (SLC1A2/EAAT2 in astrocytes and SLC38A2/SNAT2 and SLC16A7/MCT2 in neurons) to hijack the neuron-astrocyte metabolic coupling, leading to extracellular retention of these metabolites and promoting cancer cell growth. Our findings reveal a mechanism through which cancer cells of a non-brain origin reprogram neural metabolism to fuel brain metastases.

The resident human skin microbiome is responsible for the production of most of the human scents that are attractive to mosquitoes. Hence, engineering the human skin microbiome to synthesize less of mosquito attractants or produce repellents could potentially reduce bites and prevent the transmission of deadly mosquito-borne pathogens. In order to further characterize the human skin volatilome, we quantified the major volatiles of 39 strains of skin commensals (Staphylococci and Corynebacterium). Importantly, to validate the behavioral activity of these volatiles, we first assessed landing behavior triggered by human skin volatiles. We demonstrated that landing behavior is gated by the presence of carbon dioxide and L-(+)-lactic acid. This is similar to the combinatorial coding triggering mosquito short range attraction. Repellency behavior to selected skin volatiles and terpenes was tested in the presence of carbon dioxide and L-(+)-lactic acid. In a 2-choice landing behavior context, the skin volatiles 2- and 3-methyl butyric acids reduced mosquito landing by 62.0-81.6% and 87.1-99.6%, respectively. Similarly, the terpene geraniol was capable of reducing mosquito landing behavior by 74.9%. We also tested the potential repellency effects of terpenes in mosquitoes at short-range using a 4-port olfactometer. In these assays, geraniol reduced mosquito attraction (69-78%) to a mixture of key human kairomones carbon dioxide, L-(+)-lactic acid, and ammonia. These findings demonstrate that carbon dioxide and L-(+)-lactic acid change the valence of other skin volatiles towards mosquito landing behavior. Moreover, this study offers candidate odorants to be targeted in a novel strategy to reduce attractants or produce repellents by the human skin microbiota that may curtail mosquito bites, and subsequent mosquito-borne disease.

A one-step calcination method was employed to fabricate a new TiO 2 /g-C 3 N 4 (TCN) composite catalyst. The therein TiO 2 nanoparticles with good dispersion were synthesized through a sol-gel method and followed by additional heat treatment. The ultra-thin and flat g-C 3 N 4 (CN) nanosheets were synthesized by calcining a mixture of urea and melamine. The obtained TCN exhibited significantly excellent performance, especially when 3 wt% Pt was added and lactic acid (HL) was used as a sacrificial agent, achieving a rate of 32.5 mmol/h/g. This improvement can be attributed to the uniform dispersion of nano TiO 2 particles on g-C 3 N 4 , the flat ultra-thin layer structure of CN, and the constructed heterojunctions between two, which promote the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. Measurements of PL and photocurrent response confirmed enhanced efficiency in interface charge separation and transfer. Additionally, it demonstrated lower internal resistance in EIS tests. Notably, owing to the piezoelectric properties of CN, when the reaction liquid was subjected to additional ultrasonic treatment, the hydrogen production rate further increased to 43.57 mmol/h/g and 2.9 mmol/h/g, respectively, in simulated sunlight and visible light response. The piezoelectric effect of CN induced by ultrasound regulated the bandgap width of the catalysts, broadening their response to visible light. This study investigated the ability of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) isolated from oranges to use fish by‐products (FB) and chicken by‐products (CB) as nitrogen sources alternative to yeast extract for lactic acid (LA) production in a papaya by‐product medium as a carbon source. Once the fermentation agents had been isolated, they were subjected to biochemical and molecular characterization. Inexpensive nitrogen sources, precisely CB and FB, were prepared, freeze‐dried, and yield evaluated. Also, before to the fermentation experiments, the Total Kjehdahl Nitrogen (TKN) of these by‐products and that of the yeast extract were determined. Then, three production media differing in terms of nitrogen source were formulated from these nitrogen sources. From the 22 LAB isolated from orange, two isolates of interest (NGO25 and NGO23) were obtained; all belonging to the Lactiplantibacillus plantarum species based on 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Furthermore, the production yield powder obtained after lyophilization of 1 L of CB and FB surpernatant were, respectively, 16.6 g and 12.933 g. The TKN of different nitrogen sources powder were 71.4 ± 0.000% DM (FB), 86.145 ± 0.001% DM (CB), and 87.5 ± 0.99% DM (yeast extract). The best kinetic parameters of LA production (LA (g/L): 31.945 ± 0.078; volumetric productivity (g/L.h): 1.331 ± 0.003; LA yield (mg/g) 63.89 ± 0.156; biomass (g/L) 7.925 ± 0.035; cell growth rate (g/L.h): 0.330 ± 0.001) were recorded by Lactiplantibacillus plantarum NGO25 after 24 h of fermentation. The latter data were obtained in the production medium containing CB as nitrogen sources. In addition, this production medium cost only $0.152 to formulate, compared to yeast extract which required $1.692 to formulate. Localized foaming of polymers is promising to fabricate polymeric composite structures for applications in biomedical, aerospace, automotive, etc. However, the severe pyrolysis and carbonization of polymer chains during localized foaming may degrade the bulk strength. Herein, a mild localized foaming strategy is proposed to fabricate poly(lactic acid) (PLA) micro‐foams within dense PLA matrices using ultrafast lasers. The PLA substrates doped with graphene (Gr) and azodicarbonamide (AC) are developed for mild foaming. A picosecond laser is applied to pattern PLA micro‐foams on the PLA/Gr/AC substrates to fabricate porous/nonporous micro‐composite structures. The thermal behavior of the PLA/Gr/AC substrates is characterized to evaluate their capability in photothermal conversion and mild foaming during ultrafast laser pulses. To optimize the laser foaming process, the microstructure of the laser‐foamed PLA processed with different laser parameters is studied. It demonstrates that the oxidation of the functional groups dominates the side reactions on the PLA chains with slight variation in molecular weight during laser foaming, indicating that the PLA chains keep almost intact and mild localized foaming is realized. Furthermore, the developed technology is demonstrated for micro‐patterning and texturing, material toughness programming, and shape memory programming, showing promising applications for smart materials, metamaterials, micro‐robotics, and biological scaffolds. Polyoxometalates (POMs), in particular the Keggin-type HPA-5 (H8PV5Mo7O40) are widely established as effective catalysts for acid- and redox-catalyzed reactions. Yet, they are mainly used as homogeneous catalysts, which poses challenges regarding catalyst separation. This study explores the synthesis of supported HPA-5, and its application as a heterogeneous catalyst for biomass conversion, focusing on activated carbons with diverse chemical and physical properties as support materials. Characterization of these carbons gives insights into the influence of surface area, oxygen content, and acidity on HPA adsorption and stability. Activated carbon CW20, was found to be the best support due to its high vanadium loading and effective preservation of the HPA-5 structure. It underwent various pre- and post-treatments, and the obtained supported catalysts were evaluated for their catalytic performance in converting glucose under both oxidative (OxFA process) and inert (Retro-Aldol condensation) conditions. Notably, HPA-5 supported on CW20 emerged as an exceptional catalyst for the retro-aldol condensation of glucose to lactic acid, achieving a selectivity of 15% and a conversion rate of 71%, with only minimal vanadium leaching. Stereoselective inhibition aided by "tailor‐made" polymeric additives is an efficient approach to obtain enantiopure compounds through conglomerate crystallization. The chemical and configurational match between the side groups of polymers and the molecules of undesired enantiomer is considered to be a necessary condition for successful stereoseparation. Whereas in this contribution, we present an effective resolution of chiral pharmaceuticals by using cellulose acetates as the additives, which stereoselectively reside on the specific crystal faces of one enantiomer and inhibit its crystal nucleation and growth through helical pattern and supramolecular interaction complementarity. An investigation of nimodipine serves as a case study to highlight the novelty of this strategy wherein R‐crystals exhibiting an impressive enantiomeric excess value of 97 % can be attained by employing a mere 0.01 wt % cellulose acetate. Guaifenesin and phenyl lactic acid are also well‐resolved by utilizing this methodology. Our work not only brings about a brand‐new design strategy for "tailor‐made" additives, but will also promote the further exploration of the endless potential for utilizing natural biomolecules in chiral recognition and resolution. For the upcycling of waste polyethylene terephthalate (PET), encompassing both colored and fabric PET materials, we investigated the Ir(triNHC)‐catalyzed dehydrogenative coupling of PET and methanol, leading to the production of sodium lactate with good yields. We proposed a sustainable method for isolating lactic acid from the catalytic reaction mixture of sodium lactate and regenerating the base using bipolar membrane electrodialysis (BMED). This isolation method demonstrated high effectiveness, achieving isolation of lactic acid while maintaining economic feasibility at $ 0.10 per kg of lactic acid, and enabling sustainable NaOH regeneration with complete resource circulation. We assessed the recyclability of the catalyst and elucidated the mechanism involving base‐mediated depolymerization and catalyst‐promoted dehydrogenation, highlighting the importance of triNHC ligands in enhancing catalytic activity. Sweet sorghum can be used to produce a substantial quantity of biofuel due to its high biological yield and high carbohydrate content. In this study, we investigated the dynamic changes in fermentation characteristics, carbohydrate components, and the bacterial community during the ensiling of wilted and unwilted sweet sorghum. The results revealed a rapid fermentation pattern and high-quality fermentation quality in wilted and unwilted sweet sorghum, wherein lactic acid, and acetic acid accumulated and stabilized during the initial 9 days of ensiling, with the pH values less than 4.2, until 60 days of ensiling. We found that the ensiling of sweet sorghum involved the degradation (5% ~ 10%) of neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and hemicellulose and that the degradation of NDF fit a first-order exponential decay model. A shift in dominance from Lactococcus to Lactobacillus occurred before the first 9 days of ensiling, and the abundance of Lactobacillus (r = -0.68, p < 0.001) was negatively correlated with the NDF content. The relative abundances of Lactobacillus in wilted and unwilted sweet sorghum after ensiling for 60 days were 76.30 and 93.49%, respectively, and relatively high fermentation quality was obtained. In summary, ensiling is proposed as a biological pretreatment for sweet sorghum for subsequent biofuel production, and unlike other materials, sweet sorghum quickly achieves good fermentation quality and has great potential for bioresource production. Objective To evaluate the preservation effect of normothermic mechanical perfusion with red blood cells from humanized genetically modified pig on severed human limbs. Methods Severed human limbs were perfused with red blood cells from humanized genetically modified pigs for 6 h. Perfusion solution was taken every hour to measure the oxygen partial pressure, Na+, K+, Ca2+, pH value, glucose, lactic acid and creatine kinase levels. Superficial flexor muscle was sampled to detect the changes of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, interleukin (IL)-2 and IL-1 levels. At 0 and 6 h after perfusion, the superficial flexor muscles of the forearm were taken for pathological examination. Intercellular space and glycogen consumption of skeletal muscles were observed. An appropriate amount of forearm vessels was collected every 2 h to detect the apoptosis of vascular endothelial cells. X-ray angiography was performed before perfusion and 6 h after perfusion to observe the filling degree of finger-tip peripheral vessels. Results The oxygen partial pressure was observed in the normal range throughout the perfusion. Na+ concentration peaked at 1 h, reaching 138.7 mmol/L, and then fluctuated within the normal range. K+ level peaked at 2 h up to 6.08 mmol/L, then decreased and fluctuated within the normal range. Ca2+ concentration reached the peak at 4 h, up to 1.03 mmol/L. Glucose level was gradually decreased at the beginning of perfusion, reaching the lowest value of 17.7 mmol/L at 2h after perfusion, and then maintained a dynamic balance. The pH value was decreased to 7.28 at 6 h after perfusion. The lactic acid level was increased to 9.6 mmol/L at 1 h after perfusion, and then gradually decreased. The creatine kinase level was increased at the start of perfusion, reached the peak at 2 h up to 20 030 U/L, then decreased and remained stable at the end of perfusion. At the end of perfusion, the morphology of muscle fibers was normal, the gap among muscle fibers was expanded slightly, and the glycogen of skeletal muscles was not significantly accumulated. At 0 h perfusion, the number of apoptotic cells in vascular endothelial cells was large, which was declined at 6 h perfusion. Evident vascular filling was observed at 0 h, and the filling degree of some finger-tip vessels was decreased at 6 h. Conclusions Normothermic mechanical perfusion of severed human limbs with red blood cells from humanized genetically modified pigs may continuously and stably supply energy and oxygen, adjust the ion pH balance of perfusion solution, maintain normal cellular metabolism and exerts certain protective effect upon severed human limbs. This paper presents the results of the use of MFI zeolite as a catalyst modified with tin and iron. Sn‐MFI and Fe‐MFI catalysts were obtained by ion exchange under hydrothermal conditions with and without ammonium exchange. Catalytic materials were characterized with the use of analytical techniques such as X‐ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller method (BET), diffuse reflectance spectroscopy in the ultraviolet‐visible range (DRS UV–visible), hydrogen temperature programmed reduction (H2‐TPR), or Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The one‐pot catalytic conversion of fructose was performed at 220 °C for 1–5 h. Based on the results, the influence of time and material selection on the products obtained can be seen. Lactic acid (LAC) was obtained with a yield of 68.7% (after 2 h) and levulinic acid (LA) with a yield of 70.9% (after 5 h) with the participation of MFI. • Succinic acid production of 30 g/L was shown with 6 gC/L MgCO3 and 24 gC/L glucose. • The inorganic carbon of "carbonate:CO2 = 1:9″ presented the highest CO2 fixation. • The PEPCK/LDH was enhanced at high gaseous CO2, by promoting succinic acid path. • 50%−65% of inorganic carbon utilization was increased via stepwise CO2 addition. • 20%−30% increment in succinic acid selectivity was shown via stepwise CO2 addition. Utilizing CO 2 for bio-succinic acid production is an attractive approach to achieve carbon capture and recycling (CCR) with simultaneous production of a useful platform chemical. Actinobacillus succinogenes and Basfia succiniciproducens were selected and investigated as microbial catalysts. Firstly, the type and concentration of inorganic carbon concentration and glucose concentration were evaluated. 6 g C/L MgCO 3 and 24 g C/L glucose were found to be the optimal basic operational conditions, with succinic acid production and carbon yield of over 30 g/L and over 40%, respectively. Then, for maximum gaseous CO 2 fixation, carbonate was replaced with CO 2 at different ratios. The "less carbonate more CO 2 " condition of the inorganic carbon source was set as carbonate: CO 2 = 1:9 (based on the mass of carbon). This condition presented the highest availability of CO 2 by well-balanced chemical reaction equilibrium and phase equilibrium, showing the best performance with regarding CO 2 fixation (about 15 mg C/(L·hr)), with suppressed lactic acid accumulation. According to key enzymes analysis, the ratio of phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase to lactic dehydrogenase was enhanced at high ratios of gaseous CO 2 , which could promote glucose conversion through the succinic acid path. To further increase gaseous CO 2 fixation and succinic acid production and selectivity, stepwise CO 2 addition was evaluated. 50%-65% increase in inorganic carbon utilization was obtained coupled with 20%-30% increase in succinic acid selectivity. This was due to the promotion of the succinic acid branch of the glucose metabolism, while suppressing the pyruvate branch, along with the inhibition on the conversion from glucose to lactic acid. Addressing fracture-related infections (FRI) and impaired bone healing remains a significant challenge in orthopedics and stomatology. Researchers aim to address this issue by utilizing biodegradable biomaterials, such as magnesium/poly lactic acid (Mg/PLA) composites, to offer antibacterial properties during the degradation of biodegradable implants. Existing Mg/PLA composites often lack sufficient Mg content, hindering their ability to achieve the desired antibacterial effect. Additionally, research on the anti-inflammatory effects of these composites during late-stage degradation is limited. To strengthen mechanical properties, bolster antibacterial efficacy, and enhance anti-inflammatory capabilities during degradation, we incorporated elevated Mg content into PLA to yield Mg/PLA composites. These composites underwent in vitro degradation studies, cellular assays, bacterial tests, and simulation of the PLA degradation microenvironment. 20 wt% and 40 wt% Mg/PLA composites displayed significant antibacterial properties, with three composites exhibiting notable anti-inflammatory effects. In contrast, elevated Mg content detrimentally impacted mechanical properties. The findings suggest that Mg/PLA composites hold promise in augmenting antibacterial and anti-inflammatory attributes within polymers, potentially serving as temporary regenerative materials for treating bone tissue defects complicated by infections. Summary: Paocai, as one of the most widely consumed traditional fermented foods in China, is dominated by lactic acid bacteria (LAB), which exert a significant influence on the dynamics of metabolites, microecological changes, and sensory quality. In this study, five different paocai groups were designed for fermentation using Lactiplantibacillus plantarum HYY‐DB9 (LP), Levilactobacillus brevis GIM 1.773 (LB), a mixture of two LABs (LP + LB), pasteurisation (PST), and natural fermentation (NF). Nitrite content, pH, titratable acidity, viable cell counts (LAB and yeasts), metabolites (organic acids and volatile substances), and sensory evaluation were determined for each group. The results demonstrated that the mixed fermentation with two LABs (LP + LB) significantly reduced nitrite content. Organic acids produced by LAB played a crucial role in the degradation process, particularly lactic acid which exhibited the most pronounced effect on nitrite degradation. Furthermore, artificial inoculation of LAB fermentation resulted in improved taste and flavour of paocai along with increased production of alcohols, esters, and acids compared to traditional natural fermentation. These findings have important implications for enhancing paocai quality control and managing nitrite content while also providing an excellent fermentation agent for fermented paocai. In recent studies we have reported on the near-UV light-induced degradation of iron complexes of various pharmaceutical excipients, such as Fe(III)-citrate and Fe(III)-amino acid complexes. Mechanistic studies revealed a common photo-degradation pattern, i.e. the formation of carbon dioxide radical anion, a potent reducing agent, via an alkoxyl/amino radical intermediate generated by light-induced ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) involving α-hydroxycarboxylates or amino acids. Herein, we confirm the proposed general photo-degradation pathways through the study of the iron complexes of other α-hydroxycarboxylates that may be present in protein formulations, such as lactate and glycolate. The results indicate that lactate generates even higher yields of •CO 2 − as compared to citrate, suggesting a significant potential of lactate for the promotion of photo-degradation in pharmaceutical formulations. The main objective of this study was to develop a citric acid-catalyzed hydrothermal pretreatment to reach the maximum sugar recovery from soybean hull (SH), in the context of a biorefi nery concept. A central composite design (CCD) was used to optimize pretreatment conditions through the analysis of citric acid concentration, time, and temperature effects. Optimized conditions were defined as 3.56% w/w, 46.1 min, and 135.7 °C. From the solid fraction, 99.5% and 83.0% of glucose and xylose conversion, respectively, were obtained after enzymatic hydrolysis. Sugars were fermented successfully to L-lactic acid by Lactobacillus pentosus. In fact, SH hydrolysate presented no trace of inhibitor compounds, and glucose was totally consumed during fermentation. After 24 h of fermentation, a conversion rate of 0.724 g/g of sugars to lactic acid and 80.5% of the stoichiometric theoretical yield were reached. In addition, from the liquid fraction, 47.8 mg/g of xylooligosaccharides (XOS) was produced. This work demonstrates the potential of SH to be exploited as feedstock, with mild and efficient pretreatment process, for medium- to high-value bioproducts production in biorefineries. Canine tumours including urothelial carcinoma, lung adenocarcinoma, mammary gland tumour, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma have been identified as causes of death, but effective therapies are limited due to insufficient knowledge of the molecular mechanisms involved. Within the tumour microenvironment, hypoxia activates hypoxia‐inducible factor 1α (HIF1α) in tumour cells. High HIF1α expression correlates with enhanced glycolysis and poorer outcomes in human cancers. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying hypoxic tumour cells remain elusive in dogs. In our study, we investigated upregulated genes in a canine malignant melanoma cell line during hypoxia using RNA‐sequencing analysis. Glycolysis and HIF1 signalling pathways were upregulated in hypoxic melanoma cells. HIF1α knockout melanoma cells revealed that the glycolysis marker MCT4 is regulated by HIF1α activation. Hypoxia induces high lactate secretion due to enhanced glycolysis in canine melanoma cells. Furthermore, we examined monocarboxylate transporter 4 (MCT4) expression in malignant melanoma and eight other types of canine tumour tissues using immunohistochemistry (IHC). Membrane‐localized MCT4 protein was mostly detected in urothelial carcinoma and lung adenocarcinoma rather than malignant melanoma. We conclude that canine MCT4 protein plays a role in lactic acid efflux from glycolytic cells and may serve as a marker for hypoxia and glycolysis in canine tumours. The demand for renewable resources to replace fossil fuels has increased. Fruit and agricultural wastes can be fermented to yield biofuels and biochemicals. However, the high cost of the feedstock and limitations of the catalytic process hinder the application of such wastes. Therefore, we aimed to develop an efficient enzymatic saccharification process, without pretreatment, for fruit and agricultural wastes. The conversion rate of the mixed agricultural wastes (MAW) to fermentable sugars was approximately 91 % after 24 h. The ethanol yield increased by 4.5 % after limonene removal. The D-allulose yield in the hydrolysate was 4.6 mg/mL at 4 °C and 3.3 mg/mL at 50 °C, whereas the fructose yield in the sugar medium was 13.2 mg/mL at 4°C, demonstrating a high conversion yield of 73.2 %. Lactic acid was produced at a conversion rate of approximately 67.4 %. Therefore, this study presents a novel approach of the biosynthesis of functional sugars and chemicals from waste biomass, introducing a cost-effective enzymatic saccharification process that bypasses pretreatment, thereby enabling the production of biofuels, biochemicals, and functional sugars and opening up a promising economic opportunity in the field. This study aimed to analyze the dynamics of biomass growth, lactic acid production, and glucose consumption for three microorganisms; Weissella cibaria IBUN 090–03684, Lactobacillus pantarum IBUN 090–03774, and Lactobacillus pantarum IBUN 04139 by using an extended logistic model. The microorganisms were cultivated in a 1 L bioreactor with pH control by using MRS medium at 37 ∘C for 24 h at 100 rpm. Weissella cibaria IBUN 090–03684 exhibited the highest product yield (1.26 gg−1), followed by Lactobacillus plantarum IBUN 04139 (0.96 gg−1), and Lactobacillus plantarum IBUN 090–03774 (0.90 gg−1), respectively. The results indicate that Weissella cibaria IBUN 090–03684 holds significant potential for large-scale lactic acid production. Furthermore, the reported modeling strategy fits well with experimental data for the three microorganisms evaluated. The circular economy is anticipated to bring a disruptive transformation in manufacturing technologies. Robust and industrial scalable microbial strains that can simultaneously assimilate and valorize multiple carbon substrates are highly desirable, as waste bioresources contain substantial amounts of renewable and fermentable carbon, which is diverse. Lignocellulosic biomass (LCB) is identified as an inexhaustible and alternative resource to reduce global dependence on oil. Glucose, xylose, and arabinose are the major monomeric sugars in LCB. However, primary research has focused on the use of glucose. On the other hand, the valorization of pentose sugars, xylose, and arabinose, has been mainly overlooked, despite possible assimilation by vast microbial communities. The present review highlights the research efforts that have explicitly proven the suitability of arabinose as the starting feedstock for producing various chemical building blocks via biological routes. It begins by analyzing the availability of various arabinose-rich biorenewable sources that can serve as potential feedstocks for biorefineries. The subsequent section outlines the current understanding of arabinose metabolism, biochemical routes prevalent in prokaryotic and eukaryotic systems, and possible products that can be derived from this sugar. Further, currently, exemplar products from arabinose, including arabitol, 2,3-butanediol, 1,2,3-butanetriol, ethanol, lactic acid, and xylitol are discussed, which have been produced by native and non-native microbial strains using metabolic engineering and genome editing tools. This study aimed to evaluate the efficiency of various mash acidification techniques in alcoholic fermentation for the production of apple spirit. Lachancea thermotolerans and Lactiplantibacillus plantarum strains were selected to conduct pre-fermentative acidification of the mash alongside a conventional chemical acidification approach. The results confirm that L. thermotolerans and L. plantarum possess acidifying potential and can serve as effective biotools for the protection of apple mash during fermentation. Through their outstanding lactic acid production (1.05–1.26 g L−1), they were able to reduce the pH of the mash by 0.29–0.40 pH units. Moreover, the sequential fermentation of these strains with Saccharomyces cerevisiae is a powerful strategy to modulate the aroma profile of apple spirits. With the advancement of society, the issue of oil pollution is escalating, therefore we propose a straightforward and efficient approach for fabricating fully biodegradable poly (lactic acid) (PLA)/poly (butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) foams with exceptional selective oil-absorption capabilities through the integration of melt blending and supercritical CO2 (scCO2) foaming techniques. The PLA90 foams, activated at 11 MPa and temperatures ranging from 105 ℃ to 110 ℃, exhibit an expansion ratio of 44 and a highly interconnected open-cell structure with an open-cell content exceeding 80%, effectively mitigating cell shrinkage occurrences. The 105 ℃-triggered PLA90 foam displays pronounced lipophilicity/hydrophobicity, accelerated oil-absorption kinetics, and elevated oil-absorption capacity. Specifically, the equilibrium absorption capacities for cyclohexane and silicone are 12.8 g/g and 20.1 g/g, respectively. Moreover, the maximum absorption capacity decline rate for silicone oil stands at a mere 13.4% over 10 absorption–desorption cycles. The findings presented in this study establish a theoretical framework and offer empirical evidence to support the development of fully biodegradable, high-performance, and reusable oil-absorption materials. Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) grafted glycidyl neodecanoate (GND) with a single epoxy group (PLA‐GND) is prepared in this paper by solid phase grafting, and the effects of different reaction conditions on the grafting percentage of PLA‐GND are investigated. Furthermore, PLA‐GND is used as a nonreactive compatibilizer to prepare PLA‐GND/PLA/poly(butylene adipate‐co‐terephthalate) (PBAT) composite by melt blending. The results show that PLA‐GND has the highest grafting percentage of 2.15% when the feed weight ratio of GND to PLA is 0.2, the feed weight ratio of triphenylphosphine to PLA is 0.02, the additive amount of xylene is 1 mL, the reaction temperature is 120°C, and the reaction time is 115 min. The GND segments of PLA‐GND and PBAT segments could form a physical entanglement microdomain because of the similar aliphatic chain of GND and PBAT, which would improve the compatibility of PLA and PBAT. PLA‐GND/PLA/PBAT composite has the highest tensile strength, elongation at break, impact strength, crystallinity, heat deformation temperature, and melt flow rate at a PLA‐GND content of 5%, which are 38.54 MPa, 118.65%, 15.83 kJ/m2, 5.71%, 65.3°C, and 36.3 g/10 min, 14.53%, 390.90%, 68.94%, 224.43%, 16.19%, and 224.40% higher than those of PLA/PBAT composite, respectively. The study aimed to compare the impact of four chemical additives on fermentation characteristics, aerobic stability and in vitro digestibility of total mixed ration (TMR) silage based on soy sauce residue. The TMR (35% soy sauce residue + 45% Napier grass + 20% concentrate) was placed into silos (10 L). The experiment followed the completely random design, treated with different chemical additives: (1) distilled water (control); (2) 0.1% potassium sorbate (SP); (3) 0.1% sodium benzoate (SS); (4) 0.5% calcium propionate (SC); (5) 0.5% sodium diacetate (SD). Total of 100 silos (5 treatments × 4 aerobic exposure days × 5 replicates) were ensiled for 60 days. After exposure to the air, the samples were analyzed for the dynamic change of fermentation parameters at 4, 9 and 15 days, and the data was analyzed as repeated measures. The content of butyric acid and ammonia nitrogen was maintained at a low level. The highest (p < 0.05) lactic acid (LA) content and the lowest (p < 0.05) pH value were measured in SP. At the first 4 days of aerobic exposure, TMR silages treated with four chemical additives were more stable relative to the control, as indicated by the low pH value and yeast counts. Furthermore, the highest (p < 0.05) LA content and the lowest (p < 0.05) pH value indicated that SP performed superior aerobic stability compared with other chemical additives. The SP shows higher (p < 0.05) 72 h cumulative gas production (GP72) and in vitro neutral detergent fiber digestibility (IVNDFD) relative to the control. CD8+ T cell activation leads to the rapid proliferation and differentiation of effector T cells (Teffs), which mediate antitumor immunity. Although aerobic glycolysis is preferentially activated in CD8+ Teffs, the mechanisms that regulate CD8+ T cell glucose uptake in the low-glucose and acidic tumor microenvironment (TME) remain poorly understood. Here, we report that the abundance of the glucose transporter GLUT10 is increased during CD8+ T cell activation and antitumor immunity. Specifically, GLUT10 deficiency inhibited glucose uptake, glycolysis, and antitumor efficiency of tumor-infiltrating CD8+ T cells. Supplementation with glucose alone was insufficient to rescue the antitumor function and glucose uptake of CD8+ T cells in the TME. By analyzing tumor environmental metabolites, we found that high concentrations of lactic acid reduced the glucose uptake, activation, and antitumor effects of CD8+ T cells by directly binding to GLUT10's intracellular motif. Disrupting the interaction of lactic acid and GLUT10 by the mimic peptide PG10.3 facilitated CD8+ T cell glucose utilization, proliferation, and antitumor functions. The combination of PG10.3 and GLUT1 inhibition or anti–programmed cell death 1 antibody treatment showed synergistic antitumor effects. Together, our data indicate that GLUT10 is selectively required for glucose uptake of CD8+ T cells and identify that TME accumulated lactic acid inhibits CD8+ T cell effector function by directly binding to GLUT10 and reducing its glucose transport capacity. Last, our study suggests disrupting lactate-GLUT10 binding as a promising therapeutic strategy to enhance CD8+ T cell–mediated antitumor effects. Polylactic acid (PLA) is a biodegradable and biocompatible polymer with versatile applications in packaging and medicine. It is derived from lactic acid and thus represents an eco-friendly option sourced from renewable raw materials. Despite its advantages, PLA exhibits few drawbacks, such as brittleness and relatively high melting and glass transition temperatures. However, these limitations can be addressed through copolymerization with other monomers like ε-caprolactone (ε-CL), resulting in a composite material with improved physical properties. This paper comprehensively reviews achievements in PLA–PCL copolymerization using organometallic catalysts, discussing scientific findings and various copolymer architectures obtained, including random or block configurations. It also demonstrates various sustainable catalysts for achieving the required microstructure under mild reaction conditions without the aid of any external initiator. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The design of eco‐friendly active food packaging systems based on biobased polymeric materials is a growing field of research because of the pressing concern for sustainable development. Herein, monolayer ternary thermoplastic films composed of poly(lactic acid) (PLA), gallic acid (GA, 2.5% w/w relative to PLA), and a plasticizer (poly(ethylene glycol) [PEG] or epoxidized linseed oil [ELO], 5.0 and 7.5% w/w relative to PLA) are prepared via melt‐mixing followed by compression molding. The ensuing plasticized and self‐standing PLA/GA films are translucent and have good mechanical properties (Young's modulus ~2 GPa) and welding performance. The incorporation of GA yields films with ultraviolet‐light barrier properties (transmittance below 40%, 200–400 nm), antioxidant capacity (radical scavenging activity above 94%), and antibacterial activity against the methicillin‐resistant strain of Staphylococcus aureus (minimum of 3‐log reduction colony forming units mL−1). These thermoplastic films are easily degradable via enzymatic degradation with proteinase K from Tritirachium album, reaching weight loss values of 100% after 9 days. The films plasticized with PEG present slightly better antibacterial action and enzymatic degradation, whereas those plasticized with ELO exhibit marginally higher surface hydrophobicity and thermal stability. Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum (L. plantarum) and propionic acid (PA) on fermentation characteristics and microbial community of amaranth (Amaranthus hypochondriaus) silage with different moisture contents. Methods: Amaranth was harvested at maturity stage and prepared for ensiling. There were two moisture content gradients (80%: AhG, 70%: AhS; fresh material: FM) and three treatments (control: CK, L. plantarum: LP, propionic acid: PA) set up, and silages were opened after 60 d of ensiling. Results: The results showed that the addition of L. plantarum and PA increased lactic acid (LA) content and decreased pH of amaranth after fermentation. In particular, the addition of PA significantly increased crude protein content (p < 0.05). LA content was higher in wilted silage than in high-moisture silage, and it was higher with the addition of L. plantarum and PA (p < 0.05). The dominant species of AhGLP, AhSCK, AhSLP and AhSPA were mainly L. plantarum, Lentilactobacillus buchneri and Levilactobacillus brevis. The dominant species in AhGCK include Enterobacter cloacae, and Xanthomonas oryzae was dominated in AhGPA, which affected fermentation quality. L. plantarum and PA acted synergistically after ensiling to accelerate the succession of dominant species from gram-negative to gram-positive bacteria, forming a symbiotic microbial network centred on lactic acid bacteria. Both wilting and additive silage preparation methods increased the degree of dominance of global and overview maps and carbohydrate metabolism, and decreased the degree of dominance of amino acid metabolism categories. Conclusion: In conclusion, the addition of L. plantarum to silage can effectively improve the fermentation characteristics of amaranth, increase the diversity of bacterial communities, and regulate the microbial community and its functional metabolic pathways to achieve the desired fermentation effect. AbstractIn our research described in this paper, the metal-organic framework MOF-2 [Zn2(BDC)2] was used to enhance the properties of a biodegradable blend based on poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT). PLA/PBAT/(1, 3, 5, and 7 wt%) MOF-2 blends were prepared using a melt blending technology with a twin-screw extruder. The phase morphology, rheological behavior and barrier properties of the blends were studied. X-ray diffraction (XRD) showed a slight increase in the crystalline content of the PLA/PBAT matrix with increasing MOF-2 content. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed that the PLA/PBAT blend was immiscible, and the phase morphology improved with MOF-2 by enhancing the interfacial compatibility, reducing the size of micro-domains and cavities, and promoting a transition to a co-continuous morphology, indicating better miscibility. The ternary nanocomposites with 5 and 7 wt% MOF-2 showed increased complex viscosity (η*) and storage modulus (G′) compared to those with 1 and 3% MOF-2, indicating stronger percolated networks. The thermal and barrier properties and water absorption capacity were also improved, confirming the rheological measurements. Rationale: Succinic acid and lactic acid have been associated with diarrhea in weaned piglets. The level of succinic acid and lactic acid in serum, meat, and intestinal contents is important to elucidate the mechanism of diarrhea in weaned piglets. Methods: A facile method was developed for the quantification of succinic acid and lactic acid in pigs' serum, intestinal contents, and meat using ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC/MS/MS). The serum samples underwent protein precipitation with methanol. The meat and intestinal contents were freeze-dried and homogenized using a tissue grinding apparatus. Methanol-water mixture (80:20, v/v) was used for homogenizing the meat, while water was used for homogenizing the intestinal contents. An additional step of protein precipitation with acetonitrile was required for the intestinal contents. The resulting solution was diluted with water before being analyzed by UHPLC/MS/MS. Separation of succinic acid and lactic acid could be achieved within 3 min using a Kinetic XB-C18 column. Results: The coefficients of variation for peak areas of succinic acid and lactic acid were less than 5.0%. The established method demonstrated good linearity as indicated by correlation coefficients exceeding 0.996. Additionally, satisfactory recoveries ranging from 88.58% to 108.8% were obtained. The detection limits (RS/N = 3) for succinic acid and lactic acid were determined to be 0.75 ng/mL and 0.02 µg/mL, respectively. Conclusion: This method exhibited high sensitivity, simplicity in operation, and small sample weight, making it suitable for quantitative determination of succinic acid and lactic acid in pigs' serum, intestinal contents, and meat. Amid the current environmental crisis caused by plastic accumulation, one of the proposed solutions to manage this problem is using biodegradable polymers. However, the impact of adding biodegradable polymers to the well-established circular economy of recyclable polymers, such as HDPE, has not been fully considered. Therefore, there is a need to reconsider the way we consume, dispose of, and manage biodegradable polymers after use. This study evaluates the effect of varying the contents of a biodegradable polymer, taking poly(lactic acid) (PLA) as a model biodegradable polymer, on the thermal and mechanical properties of HDPE. The study highlights the importance of identifying and disposing of biodegradable polymers to avoid mixtures with HDPE, in order not to affect mechanical performance when considering reprocessing and a new life cycle of this conventional polymer. Interesting alternatives to expensive biodegradable polymers are their composites with natural fillers. The addition of biochar to a blend of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-4-hydroxybutyrate) was studied, and the resulting materials were evaluated for their properties and changes during degradation. Introducing biochar as a filler brought a noticeable improvement in electrostatic properties. Surface resistivity decreased from 3.80 × 1012 for the sample without biochar to 1.32 × 1012 for the sample with 30% filler content. Degradation tests revealed distinct differences in the degradation profile for composites due to the presence of filler. Composites with a lower biochar content displayed curling crack edges during hydrolytic degradation, and when the filler content reached 20 wt%, PLA loss accelerated. Fermenting fruit juices with lactic acid bacteria (LAB) is a sustainable method to enhance fruit harvests and extend shelf life. This study focused on blackberries, rich in antioxidants with proven health benefits. In this research, we examined the effects of fermentation (48 h at 37 °C) at 28 days on whey-supplemented (WH, 1:1) blackberry juice (BJ) inoculated with two LAB mixtures. Consortium 1 (BJWH/C1) included Levilactobacillus brevis, Lactiplantibacillus plantarum, and Pediococcus acidilactici, while consortium 2 (BJWH/C2) comprised Lacticaseibacillus casei and Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus. All of the strains were previously isolated from aguamiel, pulque, and fermented milk. Throughout fermentation and storage, several parameters were evaluated, including pH, lactic acid production, viscosity, stability, reducing sugars, color, total phenolic content, anthocyanins, and antioxidant capacity. Both consortia showed a significant increase in LAB count (29–38%) after 16 h. Sample BJWH/C2 demonstrated the best kinetic characteristics, with high regression coefficients (R2 = 0.97), indicating a strong relationship between lactic acid, pH, and fermentation/storage time. Despite some fluctuations during storage, the minimum LAB count remained at 9.8 log CFU/mL, and lactic acid content increased by 95%, with good storage stability. Notably, sample BJWH/C2 increased the total phenolic content during storage. These findings suggest that adding whey enhances biomass and preserves physicochemical properties during storage. Polylactic acid (PLA), a highly promising biodegradable biopolymer, has been extensively studied over the last two decades. The thermoplastic polyester PLA is bio-based, compostable, and eco-friendly. Its monomer, lactic acid, is fermented from renewable plant sources like starch and sugar. Therefore, PLA is regarded as a desirable substitute for conventional petroleum-based polymers. Because of its biocompatible and biodegradable properties, U.S. FDA (Food and Drug Administration) has approved PLA as a biomedical material. PLA has excellent mechanical, physical, structural, and thermal properties, making it suitable for various applications. However, PLA has limitations such as low impact toughness, hydrophobicity, and slow degradation rate at ambient temperatures. This can be improved by different modification methods, such as copolymerization, making composites or blends of PLA with other biodegradable polymers, or incorporating additives. This review presents information about the various methods of synthesis of PLA, its properties, and the environmental degradation of PLA. In addition, the different processing techniques of PLA are also reviewed. This study was directed to prepare poly (lactic acid) curcumin (Cur)-based nanofibers using the electrospinning method and their evaluation potentially in the presence of titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles as bioactive wound dressings. The interactions between components, crystallinity nature, and presence of Cur-TiO2 in the prepared nanofibers were demonstrated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Furthermore, scanning electron microscopy images revealed that the existence of Cur-TiO2 in the system caused a decrease in the nanofiber diameters from 264 ± 29 to 210 ± 18 nm, and the significant influence of TiO2 on the hydrophilicity of nanofibers was proved by the water contact angle test. Based on the cytotoxicity studies, TiO2-containing nanofibers were biocompatible and did not reduce the viability of the cultured fibroblast cells. Moreover, it was found that the cell proliferation and level of cell adhesion increased in the presence of Cur-TiO2, and the highest amount of cell growth occurred on scaffolds containing TiO2, according to fluorescent staining. Finally, the antibacterial activities of the samples against Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, named Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, respectively, were analyzed, which confirmed that the addition of Cur-TiO2 caused bacterial resistance, resulting in their desired potential for being employed in wound dressing applications. To prepare different types of lutein nanostructured lipid carriers (LNLs) using chitosan (CS), chitosan-epigallocatechin gallate covalent (C-CS-EGCG), and chitosan-epigallocatechin gallate ester non-covalent (Non-C-CS-EGCG) modifications combined with high-pressure microfluidization. A simulated colonic digestion model was established to investigate the stability and interaction with gut microbiota of these modified lutein nanostructured lipid carriers. Results showed that after 24 hours of simulated in vitro colonic fermentation, the lutein content in CS-LNLs significantly decreased (P<0.05) compared to other treatment groups. Except for lutein and CS-LNLs, the total sugar content in the fermentation supernatant significantly decreased (P<0.05) in other treatment groups, while the total polyphenol content in C-CS-EGCG-LNLs and Non-C-CS-EGCG-LNLs showed an opposite trend. After 24 hours of fermentation, the production of acetic acid and propionic acid significantly increased (P<0.05) in all treatment groups except the LUT group, with the acetic acid concentration reaching 17.18±0.60 mmol/L in the C-CS-EGCG-LNLs group. The lactic acid concentration reached 2.87±0.05 mmol/L, significantly higher (P<0.05) than the blank control group (BLK) by 7.55 times. The three different types of modified lutein nanostructured lipid carriers had a significant impact on the gut microbiota structure. The relative abundance of Bacteroides, Bifidobacterium, and Faecalibacterium significantly increased (P<0.05) in CS-LNLs, C-CS-EGCG- LNLs, and Non-C-CS-EGCG-LNLs, while C-CS-EGCG-LNLs enriched more Veillonella. Conclusion: Compared to other modification groups, C-CS-EGCG-LNLs had significant intestinal microbial structural differentiation in the colon digestive phase of nanoliposomes. To investigate the effects of nitrogen source nutrients on the growth and metabolism of Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG), this study used soybean protein isolates (dSPI) and soybean peptides (dPEP) from simulated gastrointestinal digestion as raw materials. The number of viable cells and the production of lactic acid and acetic acid in LGG were measured through mono-culture. LGG was co-cultured with Listeria monocytogenes to determine its utilization of soybean protein isolates and soybean peptides in the presence of pathogens. The results of mono-culture showed that both dPEP and dSPI could increase the viable number of LGG (P<0.05), and the effect of dPEP was earlier four hours than that of dSPI, and they could significantly increase the production of SCFAs (P<0.05). In the co-culture system, dSPI weakened the competitiveness of Listeria monocytogenes (List m) and improved the competitiveness of LGG. After 4 h and 8 h of culture, the number of living cells of LGG was higher than that of mono-culture (P<0.05). The results of this study identify nitrogen sources as potentially beneficial nutrients, and provide a theoretical basis for the development of soybean protein and soybean peptide functional foods. The impact of adding ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA 80) and 1 wt% TiO2 nanoparticles on the morphology and crystallization behavior of poly(lactic acid) blends was investigated using DSC, SEM, and POM. Thermal analysis revealed the enhancement of crystallinity of PLA in the presence of TiO2 and higher EVA 80 content in the blend. The PLA and EVA 80 components showed compatibility, as evidenced by the shift of the glass transition temperatures of the PLA phase in the blend to lower values compared to neat PLA. The lower temperature shift of the cold crystallization of the PLA and the formation of the small spherulites of the PLA in the blends indicated that the EVA 80 and TiO2 act as a nucleating agent for crystallization. The non-isothermal crystallization parameters of the composites were evaluated using Avrami's modified model, the MO approach, and Friedman's isoconversional method. The Avrami's modified rate constant (K) and the effective activation energy values significantly increased with the incorporation of EVA 80 and TiO2 nanoparticles. AbstractChitosan based films endowed with antibacterial features have witnessed remarkable progress as potential wound dressings. The current study aimed at appraising the effects of the molar mass of chitosan (MM) and the film casting acids on the properties of unplasticized chitosan films and plasticized MSO-embedded chitosan films in order to provide best suited film formulation as a potential candidate for wound dressing application. The prepared films were functionally characterized in terms of their qualitative assessment, thickness, density, swelling behavior, water vapor barrier, mechanical and antibacterial properties. Overall, all chitosan films displayed thickness lower than the human dermis even though thicker and denser films were produced with lactic acid. Assessment of the swelling behavior revealed that only high molar mass (HMM) chitosan films may be regarded as absorbent dressings. Moreover, unplasticized HMM lactate (HMM-LA) films furnished lower stiffness and higher percent strain break as compared to acetate films, due to the plasticizing effect of the remaining lactic acid as alluded by the FTIR analysis. Meanwhile, they provided suitable level of moisture and indicated substantial antibacterial activity against S. aureus and E. coli, the most commonly opportunistic bacteria found in infected skin wound. Plasticized chitosan films doped with MSO were significantly thicker and more permeable to water compared to unplasticized films. Furthermore, MSO significantly potentiate the antibacterial effect of chitosan-based films. Therefore, plasticized HMM-LA/MSO chitosan film flashing good swelling behavior, adequate WVTR and WVP, suitable mechanical properties and antibacterial performances substantiated to be a promising antibacterial dressing material for moderately exuding wounds. Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) is known to exhibit slow crystallization. Therefore, post‐process annealing is often performed, at which structure change is inevitable. In this paper, the structure development during annealing of PLA containing N,N′‐ethylenebis(12‐hydroxystearamide) (EBHS) is studied using extruded strands. First, EBHS, which acts as a nucleating agent, is dissolved in molten PLA, and then segregates with a fibrous shape during cooling. Next, the PLA containing EBHS is extruded, which causes EBHS fibers in the strand to orientate with the flow direction. When the strand is annealed at 100°C, amorphous PLA chains initially lose their orientation. Then, the chain orientation in the PLA strand develops because of transcrystallization from the surface of EBHS fibers that are aligned with the flow direction. As a result, the Hermans orientation function increases from 1.8 × 10−3 (before annealing) to 6.0 × 10−3 (after annealing). Moreover, the annealed PLA/EBHS strand shows less shrinkage (0.80 ± 0.19%) than the annealed PLA strand (2.04 ± 0.27%). The promotion of PLA chain orientation induced by the presence of aligned EBHS fibers can be used to control the structure and dimensional change of PLA products during annealing.
