The introduction of porosity in nanomaterials via magnetron sputtering in helium atmospheres is an interesting strategy for the design of functional materials. Amorphous silicon coatings, with high concentration of He incorporated in the form of overpressurized nano-bubbles, present modified optical properties in comparison with dense coatings of similar composition. In this work, annealing process in He atmosphere from 300 °C up to 1200 °C is performed to evaluate stability after the release of He from the a-Si:He coatings (thickness ∼1700 nm) and to favor matrix crystallization and defect evolution. The work is focused on these effects on the silicon film and its properties. The composition and microstructural evolution of the coatings annealed to temperatures as high as 1200° were investigated by electron microscopy and X-Ray diffraction. Annealing effects on the optical properties and bandgap of the silicon coatings were evaluated by ellipsometry and UV–Vis spectrometry. Helium release from the coating, densification, defects evolution and ordering due to crystallization have a small effect on the refractive index, but cause a significant change in the material band gap from 1.37 eV to 1.80 eV.

A series of ruthenium nanoparticles (Ru·MIC) stabilized with different mesoionic 1,2,3-triazolylidene (MIC) ligands were prepared by decomposition of the Ru(COD)(COT) (COD = 1,5-cyclooctadiene; COT = 1,3,5-cyclooctatriene) precursor with H2 (3 bar) in the presence of substoichiometric amounts of the stabilizer (0.1-0.2 equiv.). Small and monodisperse nanoparticles exhibiting mean sizes between 1.1 and 1.2 nm were obtained, whose characterization was carried out by means of transmission electron microscopy (TEM), including high resolution TEM (HRTEM), inductively coupled plasma (ICP) analysis and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). In particular, XPS measurements confirmed the presence of MIC ligands on the surfaces of the nanoparticles. The Ru·MIC nanoparticles were used in the isotopic H/D exchange of different hydrosilanes, hydroboranes, hydrogermananes and hydrostannanes using deuterium gas under mild conditions (1.0 mol% Ru, 1 bar D2, 55 °C). Selective labelling of the E-H (E = B, Si, Ge, Sn) bond in these derivatives, with high levels of deuterium incorporation, was observed.

A series of RuSNS nanoparticles, prepared by decomposition of Ru(COD)(COT) with H2 in the presence of an SNS ligand, have been found to catalyse the reduction of the greenhouse gas N2O to N2 employing different hydrosilanes.

Nano-structuration of materials at the mesoscale to give rise to porosity-controlled coatings represents an important breakthrough in the area of Materials Science and Engineering, offering new and enhanced functionalities of interest in fields such as optics, optronics and optoelectronics. In order to optimize their performances, in-depth analyses are required: local information about the morphology, composition and atomic structure, the compactness distribution, but also layer homogeneity, interface and interpenetration between stacked layers or oxidation are extremely important factors that can ruin their way of operation. In this particular context, the objective of the present PhD Thesis is to make significant contributions to the study and development of multifunctional porous nanostructured systems, from their design and elaboration, to the maximum knowledge of their structure and properties, through advanced (S)TEM methods, including 3D reconstructions, elemental analyses at the nanoscale and atomic-scale imaging, combined with optical spectroscopy techniques. In the first instance, given the great potential of the slanted nanostructures generated by means of oblique angle depositions, in which the refractive index gradient can be tuned by the columns tilt and density imposed via the growth angles and parameters, OAD broadband antireflective coatings based on Si, Ge or SiO2 OAD films have been designed, manufactured, and extensively characterized with the aim of maximizing the performance of the optical elements in the vis-IR wavelength range. This same approach has also been implemented to enhance the antireflective capabilities of transparent conductive ITO thin films in the near-IR window without compromising too much their electrical response. On the other hand, the advanced structural and functional characterization of porosity-controlled GaN NW arrays grown by plasma-assisted MBE through (S)TEM methods and vis-IR SE elliposmetry, has helped not only to

N-Heterocyclic Thiones (NHT) proved to be efficient ligands for the stabilization of small platinum nanoparticles (1.3-1.7 nm), synthesized by decomposition of [Pt(dba)2], under a H2 atmosphere, in the presence of variable sub-stoichiometric amounts of the NHT. Full characterization by means of TEM, HR-TEM, NMR, ICP, TGA and XPS have been carried out, providing information about the nature of the metal nanoparticles and the interaction of the NHT ligands to the metal surface. Importantly, DFT calculations indicate that some NHT ligands interact with the metal through the C[double bond, length as m-dash]C double bond of the imidazole fragment in addition to the sulfur atom, thus providing additional stabilization to the nanoparticles. According to XPS, TGA and ICP techniques, the surface coverage by the ligand increases by decreasing the size of the substituents on the nitrogen atom. The platinum nanoparticles have been used as catalyst in the hydroboration of alkynes. The most active system is that with a less covered surface area lacking an interaction of the ligand by means of the C[double bond, length as m-dash]C double bond. This catalyst hydroborates alkynes with excellent selectivities towards the monoborylated anti-Markovnikov product (vinyl-boronate) when one equiv. of borane is used. Very interestingly, aliphatic alkynes undergo a second hydroborylation process leading to the corresponding 1,1- and 1,2-diboroylated species with good selectivities towards the former.

This study investigates the impact of dual ionic and covalent cross-links (ion-XrL and cov-XrL) on the properties of chitosan-based (CTS) hydrogels as eco-friendly drug delivery systems (DDS) for the model drug diclofenac sodium (DCNa). Citric acid and a diiodo-trehalose derivative (ITrh) were the chosen ionic and covalent cross-linker, respectively. The novel hydrogels completely disintegrated within 96 h by means of a hydrolysis process mediated by the enzyme trehalase. As far as the authors are aware, this is the first time that a trehalose derivative has been used as a covalent cross-linker in the formation of biodegradable hydrogels. The impact of CTS concentration and degree of cov-XrL on rheological parameters were examined by means of an experimental model design and marked differences were found between the materials. Hydrogels with maximum elastic properties were achieved at high CTS concentrations and high degrees of cov-XrL. DCNa-loaded formulations displayed well-controlled drug-release profiles strongly dependent on formulation composition (from 17% to 40% in 72 h). Surprisingly, higher degrees of covalent cross-linking led to a boost in drug release. The formulations presented herein provides a simple and straightforward pathway to design fully biodegradable, tailor-made controlled drug delivery systems with improved rheological properties.

A well‐established growth model has been used to study the interplay between the substrate topography and the thin film morphology. A critical thickness has been defined, below which the columnar growth is modulated by the substrate topography, while for thicknesses above, the impact of substrate features is progressively lost in two stages; first columns grown on taller features take over neighboring ones, and later the film morphology evolves independently of substrate features. These results have been experimentally tested by analyzing the nanocolumnar growth of SiO2 thin films on ion‐induced patterned substrates.

In this paper Co/CoO thick layers (hundreds of nanometers) of different porosity and oxidation degree were prepared in a magnetron sputtering deposition process by tailoring the DC sputtering power, as well as the process gas and target composition. The control of the synthesis parameters allowed the nanostructuration of the films with a singular distribution of closed pores and a controlled amount of CoO. We observed an exchange bias field of 2.8 KOe for porous Co/CoO composites, similar to Co/CoO bilayers but for coatings thicker than 300 nm. Besides, it was observed that the coating presents bistable magnetic features when cooled under zero field conditions as a result of the unusual exchange coupling.

This work presents results in the feld of advanced substrate solutions in order to achieve high crystalline quality group-III nitrides based heterostructures for high frequency and power devices or for sensor applications. With that objective, Low Temperature Co-fred Ceramics has been used, as a noncrystalline substrate. Structures like these have never been developed before, and for economic reasons will represent a groundbreaking material in these felds of Electronic. In this sense, the report presents the characterization through various techniques of three series of specimens where GaN was deposited on this ceramic composite, using diferent bufer layers, and a singular metal-organic chemical vapor deposition related technique for low temperature deposition. Other single crystalline ceramic-based templates were also utilized as substrate materials, for comparison purposes.

In this work, (scanning) transmission electron microscopy has been used to study the nanostructure of porous cobalt coatings obtained by magnetron sputtering using helium as process gas. This nanostructure consists of closed pores of different nanometric size (about 4–20 nm) that are distributed all over a nanocrystalline Co matrix and filled with the deposition gas. Spatially resolved electron energy-loss spectroscopy analysis was applied to measure and map, with high lateral resolution, the relevant physical properties (density, pressure and He-K edge shift) of helium trapped inside these individual nanopores, in order to provide new insights about the growth mechanism involved in such systems. In particular, a coefficient of proportionality, C = 0.039 eV nm3, between the blue shift of the He K-edge and the He density has been found. In addition, very high He densities (10–100 at./nm3) and pressures in the gigapascal range (0.05–5.0 GPa) have been measured. The linear dependence of these parameters as a function of the inverse radii obeying to the Laplace-Young law for most of the pores suggests that their formation during the coating’s growth takes place in regime of elastic deformation of the Co matrix
