2. Permeability of concrete under thermal and compressive stress influence; an experimental study

Abstract

In recent years the permeability was found as one of the main parameters affecting the durability of concrete. Especially in concrete at high temperatures in case of fire loading, the interaction of thermal/mechanical loading and fluid transfer strongly influences degradation of mechanical properties within concrete and spalling of near-surface concrete layers. To understand the change in transport properties of concrete, a new experimental setup was developed, allowing us to conduct permeability tests under uniaxial compressive loading up to 20 MPa and thermal condition up to 350 °C. Based on the obtained results, the effect of both mechanical and thermal loading on the effective transport properties is highlighted and relations to more simplified test setups, disregarding mechanical loading and/or conducting the permeability test at room temperature giving the residual permeability, are established.

Abstract

The presented research work contributes to the realistic simulation of the stress state within fire-loaded concrete in order to attain insight into the development and occurrence of the critical state right before and during the event of spalling. A coupled thermo-hygro-chemo-mechanical code simulating the stress state as a consequence of both thermo-hygral and thermo-mechanical processes is presented together with an embedded strong-discontinuity model which is capable of capturing and tracking the propagation of a crack evolving in concrete as a quasi-brittle material. Combination of the two mentioned models is currently under way. With the resulting coupled model, it will be possible to take into account all major couplings, allowing to realistically simulate the spalling process.

Abstract

We have studied the effect of Ge substitution and pressure on the heavy-fermion superconductor CePt3Si. Ge substitution on the Si site acts as negative chemical pressure leading to an increase in the unit-cell volume but also introduces chemical disorder. We carried out electrical resistivity and ac heat-capacity experiments under hydrostatic pressure on CePt3Si1-xGex (x=0, 0.06). Our experiments show that the suppression of superconductivity in CePt3Si1-xGex is mainly caused by the scattering potential, rather than volume expansion, introduced by the Ge dopants. The antiferromagnetic order is essentially not affected by the chemical disorder., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

A custom-made 228Th source of several MBq activity was produced for the Borexino experiment for studying the external background of the detector. The aim was to reduce the unwanted neutron emission produced via (alpha,n) reactions in ceramics used typically for commercial 228Th sources. For this purpose a ThCl4 solution was converted chemically into ThO2 and embedded into a gold foil. The paper describes the production and the characterization of the custom-made source by means of gamma-activity, dose rate and neutron source strength measurements. From gamma-spectroscopic measurements it was deduced that the activity transfer from the initial solution to the final source was >91% (at 68% C.L.) and the final activity was (5.41+-0.30) MBq. The dose rate was measured by two dosimeters yielding 12.1 mSv/h and 14.3 mSv/h in 1 cm distance. The neutron source strength of the 5.41 MBq 228Th source was determined as (6.59+-0.85)/sec., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

We studied the evolution of superconductivity (sc) and antiferromagnetism (afm) in the heavy fermion compound CePt_3Si with hydrostatic pressure. We present a pressure-temperature phase diagram established by electrical transport measurements. Pressure shifts the superconducting transition temperature, T_c, to lower temperatures. Abstract

In most organisms, the concentration of free Zn2+ is controlled by metallothioneins (MTs). In contrast, no significant proportions of Zn2+ are bound to MTs in the slug, Arion vulgaris. Instead, this species possesses cytoplasmic low-molecular-weight Zn2+ (LMW Zn) binding compound that divert these metal ions into pathways uncoupled from MT metabolism. Zn2+ is accumulated in the midgut gland calcium cells of Arion vulgaris, where they associate with a low-molecular-weight ligand with an apparent molecular mass of ~ 2,000 Da. Mass spectrometry of the semi-purified LMW Zn binding compound combining an electrospray ion source with a differential mobility analyser coupled to a time-of-flight mass spectrometer revealed the presence of four Zn2+-containing ion signals, which arise from disintegration of one higher MW complex resulting in an ion-mobility diameter of 1.62 nm and a molecular mass of 837 Da. We expect that the novel Zn2+ ion storage pathway may be shared by many other gastropods, and particularly species that possess Cd-selective MT isoforms or variants with only very low affinity to Zn2+.
