Malaria remains a significant global health challenge, necessitating rapid and accurate diagnostic methods. While computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) tools utilizing deep learning have shown promise, their generalization to diverse clinical settings remains poorly assessed. This study evaluates the generalization capabilities of a CAD model for malaria diagnosis from thin blood smear images across four sites. We explore strategies to enhance generalization, including fine-tuning and incremental learning. Rydberg alkaline earth atoms are promising tools for quantum simulation and metrology. When one of the two valence electrons is promoted to long-lived circular states, the second valence electron can be optically manipulated without significant autoionization. We harness this feature to demonstrate laser slowing of a thermal atomic beam of circular strontium atoms. By driving the main ion core 422 nm wavelength resonance, we observe a velocity reduction of 50 m/s without significant autoionization. We also show that a superposition of circular states undergoes very weak decoherence during the cooling process, up to the scattering of more than thousand photons. This robustness opens new perspectives for quantum simulations over long timescales with circular atoms, while simultaneously cooling their motional state. It makes it possible to mitigate the harmful effects of unavoidable heating due to spin-motion coupling during a quantum simulation., Comment: 9 pages

A catalog containing details of the highest-energy cosmic rays recorded through the detection of extensive air-showers at the Pierre Auger Observatory is presented with the aim of opening the data to detailed examination. Descriptions of the 100 showers created by the highest-energy particles recorded between 1 January 2004 and 31 December 2020 are given for cosmic rays that have energies in the range 78 EeV to 166 EeV. Details are also given of a further nine very-energetic events that have been used in the calibration procedure adopted to determine the energy of each primary. In medical image processing, the most important information is often located on small parts of the image. Patch-based approaches aim at using only the most relevant parts of the image. Finding ways to automatically select the patches is a challenge. In this paper, we investigate two criteria to choose patches: entropy and a spectral similarity criterion. We perform experiments at different levels of patch size. We train a Convolutional Neural Network on the subsets of patches and analyze the training time. We find that, in addition to requiring less preprocessing time, the classifiers trained on the datasets of patches selected based on entropy converge faster than on those selected based on the spectral similarity criterion and, furthermore, lead to higher accuracy. Moreover, patches of high entropy lead to faster convergence and better accuracy than patches of low entropy.

We present our follow-up observations with GRANDMA of transient sources revealed by the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF). Over a period of six months, all ZTF triggers were examined in real time by a dedicated science module implemented in the Fink broker, which will be used for the data processing of the Vera C. Rubin Observatory. In this article, we present three selection methods to identify kilonova candidates. Out of more than 35 million candidates, a hundred sources have passed our selection criteria. Six were then followed-up by GRANDMA (by both professional and amateur astronomers). The majority were finally classified either as asteroids or as supernovae events. We mobilized 37 telescopes, bringing together a large sample of images, taken under various conditions and quality. To complement the orphan kilonova candidates (those without associated gamma-ray bursts, which were all), we included three additional supernovae alerts to conduct further observations of during summer 2021. We demonstrate the importance of the amateur astronomer community that contributed images for scientific analyzes of new sources discovered in a magnitude range r'=17-19 mag. We based our rapid kilonova classification on the decay rate of the optical source that should exceed 0.3 mag/day. GRANDMA's follow-up determined the fading rate within 1.5+/-1.2 days post-discovery, without waiting for further observations from ZTF. No confirmed kilonovae were discovered during our observing campaign. Rydberg atoms are ideal tools for quantum technologies. Due to their large size, their dipole-dipole interaction at micrometer-scale distances and their coupling to external fields are huge. Recent experiments vividly exhibit their interest for quantum simulation, in spite of limitations due to the relatively short lifetime of optically-accessible Rydberg levels. These limitations motivate a renewed interest for the long-lived circular Rydberg states . However, detecting them is so far either destructive or complex. Moreover, alkali circular states can be manipulated only by microwave fields, unable to address individual atoms. Alkaline earth circular states, with their optically active second valence electron, can circumvent these problems. Here we show how to use the electrostatic coupling between the two valence electrons of strontium to coherently manipulate a circular Rydberg state with optical pulses. We also use this coupling to map the state of the Rydberg electron onto that of the ionic core. This experiment opens the way to a state-selective spatially-resolved non-destructive detection of the circular states and, beyond, to the realization of a hybrid optical-microwave platform for quantum technology.

GRANDMA is an international project that coordinates telescope observations of transient sources with large localization uncertainties. Such sources include gravitational wave events, gamma-ray bursts and neutrino events. GRANDMA currently coordinates 25 telescopes (70 scientists), with the aim of optimizing the imaging strategy to maximize the probability of identifying an optical counterpart of a transient source. We propose an original method for vectorizing an image or zooming it at an arbitrary scale. The core of our method relies on the resolution of a geometric variational model and therefore offers theoretic guarantees. More precisely, it associates a total variation energy to every valid triangulation of the image pixels. Its minimization induces a trian-gulation that reflects image gradients. We then exploit this triangulation to precisely locate discontinuities, which can then simply be vectorized or zoomed. This new approach works on arbitrary images without any learning phase. It is particularly appealing for processing images with low quantization like pixel art and can be used for depixelizing such images. The method can be evaluated with an online demonstrator, where users can reproduce results presented here or upload their own images.

Alkaline earth Rydberg atoms are very promising tools for quantum technologies. Their highly excited outer electron provides them with the remarkable properties of Rydberg atoms and, notably, with a huge coupling to external fields or to other Rydberg atoms while the ionic core retains an optically active electron. However, low angular-momentum Rydberg states suffer almost immediate autoionization when the core is excited. Here, we demonstrate that strontium circular Rydberg atoms with a core excited in a $4D$ metastable level are impervious to autoionization over more than a few millisecond time scale. This makes it possible to trap and laser-cool Rydberg atoms. Moreover, we observe singlet to triplet transitions due to the core optical manipulations, opening the way to a quantum microwave to optical interface.

GRANDMA is a network of 25 telescopes of different sizes, including both photometric and spectroscopic facilities. The network aims to coordinate follow-up observations of gravitational-wave candidate alerts, especially those with large localisation uncertainties, to reduce the delay between the initial detection and the optical confirmation. In this paper, we detail GRANDMA's observational performance during Advanced LIGO/Advanced Virgo Observing Run 3 (O3), focusing on the second part of O3; this includes summary statistics pertaining to coverage and possible astrophysical origin of the candidates. To do so, we quantify our observation efficiency in terms of delay between gravitational-wave candidate trigger time, observations, and the total coverage. Using an optimised and robust coordination system, GRANDMA followed-up about 90 % of the gravitational-wave candidate alerts, i.e. 49 out of 56 candidates. This led to coverage of over 9000 deg2 during O3. The delay between the gravitational-wave candidate trigger and the first observation was below 1.5 hour for 50 % of the alerts. We did not detect any electromagnetic counterparts to the gravitational-wave candidates during O3, likely due to the very large localisation areas (on average thousands of degrees squares) and relatively large distance of the candidates (above 200 Mpc for 60 % of BNS candidates). We derive constraints on potential kilonova properties for two potential binary neutron star coalescences (GW190425 and S200213t), assuming that the events' locations were imaged., Comment: 31 pages, 15 figures
