Abstract: IF 7.367; International audience; Cancer is a worldwide health problem. It is now considered as a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in developed countries. In the last few decades, considerable progress has been made in anti-cancer therapies, allowing the cure of patients suffering from this disease, or at least helping to prolong their lives. Several cancers, such as those of the lung and pancreas, are still devastating in the absence of therapeutic options. In the early 90s, TRAIL (Tumor Necrosis Factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand), a cytokine belonging to the TNF superfamily, attracted major interest in oncology owing to its selective anti-tumor properties. Clinical trials using soluble TRAIL or antibodies targeting the two main agonist receptors (TRAIL-R1 and TRAIL-R2) have, however, failed to demonstrate their efficacy in the clinic. TRAIL is expressed on the surface of natural killer or CD8+ T activated cells and contributes to tumor surveillance. Nanoparticles functionalized with TRAIL mimic membrane-TRAIL and exhibit stronger antitumoral properties than soluble TRAIL or TRAIL receptor agonist antibodies. This review provides an update on the association and the use of nanoparticles associated with TRAIL for cancer therapy.

Abstract: We report on magneto-optical studies of the quasi-two-dimensional van der Waals antiferromagnet FePS$_3$. Our measurements reveal an excitation that closely resembles the antiferromagnetic resonance mode typical of easy-axis antiferromagnets, nevertheless, it displays an unusual, four-times larger Zeeman splitting in an applied magnetic field. We identify this excitation with an $|S_z|=4$ multipolar magnon -- a single-ion 4-magnon bound state -- that corresponds to a full reversal of a single magnetic moment of the Fe$^{2+}$ ion. We argue that condensation of multipolar magnons in large-spin materials with a strong magnetic anisotropy can produce new exotic states., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures + supplement

Abstract: International audience; We fabricated junctionless and inversion-mode monocrystalline nanowire nMOSFETs down to L=18nm gate length and W=20nm width. We demonstrate record performance of nanowire junctionless transistors for analog applications: AVT=1.4mV.µm matching, Av0=62dB gain (L=200nm), fT=126GHz cutoff frequency and fMAX=182GHz maximum operating frequency (L=35nm). Junctionless transistor performances even exceed those of inversion-mode ones in terms of back-bias capability, low-frequency noise, hot-carrier degradation and fMAX. This is explained by junctionless physics: channel length modulation, bulk conduction and high channel-depth sensitivity to back bias.

Abstract: Magnetochiral dichroism (MChD) is a nonreciprocal manifestation of light-matter interaction that can be observed in chiral magnetized systems. It features a differential absorption of unpolarized light depending on the relative orientation of the magnetic field and the light wavevector and on the absolute configuration of the system. The relevance of this effect for optical readout of magnetic data calls for a complete understanding of the microscopic parameters driving MChD with an easy-accessible and nondamaging light source, such as visible light. For this purpose, here we report on MChD detected with visible light on a chiral magnetic helix formulated as [MnIII(cyclam)(SO4)]ClO4·H2O (cyclam = 1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane) featuring antiferromagnetically coupled anisotropic MnIII ions. Alternate current susceptibility measurements revealed the existence of a single-chain magnet behavior hidden below the canted antiferromagnetism (TN = 5.8 K) already evidenced by direct current magnetometry. A detailed analysis of the optical absorption gives access to the value of the zero-field splitting parameter D (2.9 cm-1), which quantifies the magnetic anisotropy of the MnIII centers. Below the magnetic ordering temperature of the material, the MChD spectra exhibit intense absolute configuration dependent MChD signals reaching record values of ca. 12% of the absorbed intensity for the two electronic transitions most influenced by the spin-orbit coupling of the MnIII ion. These findings set a clear route toward the design and preparation of highly MChD-responsive molecular materials.

Abstract: Here we report on magneto-chiral dichroism (MChD) detected with visible light on the chiral Prussian Blue Analogue [MnII(X-pnH)(H2O)][CrIII(CN)6]·H2O (X = S, R; pn = 1,2-propanediamine). Single crystals suitable for magneto-optical measurements were grown starting from enantiopure chiral ligands. X-ray diffraction and magnetic measurements confirmed the 2D-layered structure of the material, its absolute configuration, and its ferrimagnetic ordered state below a critical temperature TC of 38 K. Absorption and MChD spectra were measured between 450 and 900 nm from room temperature down to 4 K. Abstract: International audience; BackgroundIn the context of acetabular reconstruction, bone defects can be filled with processed or unprocessed bone allografts. Published data are often contradictory on this topic and few studies have been done comparing processed allografts to fresh-frozen ones. This led us to conduct a large study to measure the factors impacting the survival of THA revision: (1) type of allograft and cup, (2) technical factors or patient-related factors.HypothesisAcetabular reconstruction can be performed equally well with frozen or processed morselized allografts.Materials and methodsThis retrospective, multicenter study of acetabular reconstruction included 508 cases with a minimum follow-up of 5 years. The follow-up for the frozen grafts was shorter (7.86 years ± 1.89 [5–12.32]) than that of the processed grafts (8.22 years ± 1.77 [5.05–15.48]) (p = 0.029). However, the patients were younger at the time of the primary THA procedure in the frozen allograft group (51.5 years ± 14.2 [17–80]) than in the processed group (57.5 years ± 13.0 [12–94]) (p < 0.001) and were also younger at the time of THA revision (67.8 years ± 12.2 [36.9–89.3] versus 70 years ± 11.7 [25–94.5]) (p = 0.041).ResultsThere were more complications overall in the frozen allograft group (46/242 = 19.0%) than the processed allograft group (35/256 = 13.2%) (p = 0.044) with more instances of loosening in the frozen group (20/242 [8.2%]) than in the processed group (6/266 [3.3%])(p = 0.001). Conversely, the dislocation rate (16/242 = 6.6% vs. 17/266 = 6.4%) (p = 0.844) and infection rate (18/242 = 7.4% vs. 15/266 = 5.7%) (p = 0.264) did not differ between groups. The subgroup analysis reveal a correlation between the occurrence of a complication and higher body mass index (BMI) (p = 0.037) with a higher overall risk of complications in patients with a BMI above 30 or under 20 (p = 0.006) and a relative risk of 1.95 (95% CI: 1.26–2.93). Being overweight was associated with a higher risk of dislocation (relative risk of 2.46; 95% CI: 1.23–4.70) (p = 0.007). Loosening was more likely to occur in younger patients at the time of the procedure (relative risk of 2.77; 95% CI: 1.52–6.51) (p = 0.040) before 60 years during the revision. Lastly, patients who were less active preoperatively based on the Devane scale had an increased risk of dislocation (relative risk of 2.51; 95% CI: 1.26–8.26) (p = 0.022).DiscussionOur hypothesis was not confirmed. The groups were not comparable initially, which may explain the differences found since the larger number of loosening cases in the frozen allograft group can be attributed to group heterogeneity. Nevertheless, morselized allografts appear to be suitable for acetabular bone defect reconstruction. A randomized study would be needed to determine whether frozen or processed allografts are superior.Level of evidenceIII, comparative retrospective study.

Abstract: We present the in-depth determination of the magnetic properties and electronic structure of the luminescent and volatile dysprosium-based single molecule magnet [Dy2(bpm)(fod)6] (Hfod = 6,6,7,7,8,8,8-heptafluoro-2,2-dimethyl-3,5-octanedione, bpm = 2,2'-bipyrimidine). Ab initio calculations were used to obtain a global picture of the electronic structure and to predict possible single molecule magnet behaviour, confirmed by experiments. The orientation of the susceptibility tensor was determined by means of cantilever torque magnetometry. An experimental determination of the electronic structure of the lanthanide ion was obtained combining Luminescence, Far Infrared and Magnetic Circular Dichroism spectroscopies. Fitting these energies to the full single ion plus crystal field Hamiltonian allowed determination of the eigenstates and crystal field parameters of a lanthanide complex without symmetry idealization. We then discuss the impact of a stepwise symmetry idealization on the modelling of the experimental data. Abstract: INTRODUCTION The magnetic properties of a single metal center are determined by a combination of its total spin S and orbital angular momentum L . Orbital angular momentum gives rise to magnetic anisotropy, an essential property for applications such as information storage and high-coercivity magnets. Unquenched L arises from an odd number of electrons in degenerate orbitals and is typically observed only for free ions, as well as for complexes of the f elements. For the majority of transition metal ions, however, orbital angular momentum is quenched by the ligand field, which removes the requisite orbital degeneracies. Maximal L for a transition metal ( L = 3) would require an odd number of electrons in two sets of degenerate orbitals. Such a species would entail a non-Aufbau configuration, wherein the electrons do not fill the d orbitals in the usual order of lowest to highest in energy, and likely exhibit a large magnetic anisotropy. RATIONALE Previous efforts have identified the utility of linear coordination environments for isolating iron complexes with unquenched orbital angular momentum and large magnetic anisotropies. Crucially, transition metals in this environment are unaffected by Jahn-Teller distortions that would otherwise remove orbital degeneracies in the case of partially filled d orbitals. Separately, cobalt atoms deposited on a MgO surface—for which one-coordination of the metal is achieved, provided a vacuum is maintained—were shown to have L = 3, giving rise to near-maximal magnetic anisotropy. Calculations on the hypothetical linear molecule Co(C(SiMe 3 ) 3 ) 2 (where Me is methyl) also predicted that this system would possess a ground state with L = 3. Empirically, maximal L in a transition metal complex thus requires both a linear coordination environment and a sufficiently weak ligand field strength to allow for non-Aufbau electron filling. RESULTS The strongly reducing nature of the carbanion ligand hinders isolation of dialkyl cobalt(II) complexes. However, reducing the basicity of the central carbanion through the use of electron-withdrawing aryloxide groups allowed for the synthesis of the dialkyl cobalt(II) complex Co(C(SiMe 2 ONaph) 3 ) 2 , where Naph is a naphthyl group. Ab initio calculations on this complex predict a ground state with S = 3 / 2 , L = 3, and J = 9 / 2 arising from the non-Aufbau electron configuration (d x 2 –y 2 , d xy ) 3 (d xz , d yz ) 3 (d z 2 ) 1 . Much as for lanthanide complexes, the ligand field is sufficiently weak that interelectron repulsion and spin-orbit coupling play the key roles in determining the electronic ground state. dc magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal a well-isolated M J = ± 9 / 2 ground state, and simulations of the magnetic data from the calculations are in good agreement with the experimental data. Variable-field far-infrared (FIR) spectroscopy shows a magnetically active excited state at 450 cm −1 that, in combination with calculations and variable-temperature ac magnetic susceptibility experiments, is assigned to the M J = ± 7 / 2 state. Modeling of experimental charge density maps also suggests a d-orbital filling with equally occupied (d x 2 –y 2 , d xy ), and (d xz , d yz ) orbital sets. As a consequence of its large orbital angular momentum, the molecule exhibits slow magnetic relaxation and, in a magnetically dilute sample, a coercive field of 600 Oe at 1.8 K. CONCLUSION Isolation of Co(C(SiMe 2 ONaph) 3 ) 2 illustrates how an extreme coordination environment can confer an f-element–like electronic structure on a transition metal complex. The non-Aufbau ground state enables realization of maximal orbital angular momentum and magnetic anisotropy near the physical limit for a 3d metal. In this respect, the linear L–Co–L motif may prove useful in the design of new materials with high magnetic coercivity.

Abstract: Early actinide ions have large spin-orbit couplings and crystal field interactions, leading to large anisotropies. The success in using actinides as single-molecule magnets has so far been modest, underlining the need for rational strategies. Indeed, the electronic structure of actinide single-molecule magnets and its relation to their magnetic properties remains largely unexplored. A uranium(III) single-molecule magnet, [UIII {SiMe2 NPh}3 -tacn)(OPPh3 )] (tacn=1,4,7-triazacyclononane), has been investigated by means of a combination of magnetic, spectroscopic and theoretical methods to elucidate the origin of its static and dynamic magnetic properties.

Cet article présente la modélisation des acteurs du projet – principalement l’opérateur du réseau de chaleur -dans le but de jouer sur les flexibilités des deux acteurs en fonction du taux de valorisation de la chaleur fatale, duprix de la calorie, ou encore des émissions CO2.

Abstract: This paper introduces an experimental apparatus, which drives turbulence electrically in a liquid metal pervaded by a high magnetic field. Unlike past magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) setups involving a shallow confinement, the experiment presented here drives turbulence whose dimensionality can be set anywhere between three-dimensional and quasi two-dimensional. In particular, we show that the dimensionality and componentality of the turbulence thus generated are in fact completely fixed by the single parameter lz(li)/h, which quantifies the competition between the solenoidal component of the Lorentz force and inertia acting on a turbulent structure of the size of the forcing scale li. This parameter is fully tunable thanks to the three operating settings at hand: the injection scale, the intensity of the electric forcing and the magnitude of the magnetic field. Thanks to the very high number of measuring probes and fast acquisition rate implemented in this experiment, it is possible to reliably measure the finest features of the inertial range on a scale-wise basis.

Abstract: We report high field de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) effect measurements in CeRh$_2$Si$_2$ both below and above the first-order 26 T metamagnetic transition from an antiferromagnetic to a polarized paramagnetic state. The dHvA frequencies observed above the transition are much higher than those observed below, implying a drastic change of the Fermi-surface size. The dHvA frequencies above the transition and their angular dependence are in good agreement with band-structure calculations for LaRh$_2$Si$_2$, which correspond to CeRh$_2$Si$_2$ with localized $f$ electrons. Given that the $f$ electrons are also localized at low fields in CeRh$_2$Si$_2$, the Fermi-surface reconstruction is due to the suppression of antiferromagnetism and the restoration of the crystallographic Brillouin zone rather than the delocalization of the $f$ electrons. This example suggests that the intuitive notation of "small" and "large" Fermi surfaces commonly used for localized and itinerant $f$ electrons, respectively, requires careful consideration, taking into account the modification of the Brillouin zone in the antiferromagnetic state, when interpreting experimental results., accepted for publication in Phys. Abstract: International audience; The Laboratoire National des Champs Magnétiques Intenses (LNCMI) is a member of the European Magnetic Field Laboratory (EMFL). This is the French facility enabling researchers to perform experiments in the highest possible magnetic fields. The numerical modeling jointly developed with the Center of Modeling and Simulation of Strasbourg (Cemosis) plays an essential role in the understanding and the optimization of such magnets based on the so-called polyhelix technique (a magnet is a set of Copper alloy tubes cut by Electrical Discharge Machining). In the context of this collaboration, a full 3D multi-physics model dedicated to the study of LNCMI resistive high field magnets has been implemented. Applications of this model have shown a 3D behaviour of the magnetic field, specifically in the vicinity of the beginnings and ends of the helical cuts. The effect is greater than what is commonly expected by experts. To validate our model and this unexpected behaviour, dedicated measurement campaigns were carried out both on a real magnet insert and on a low field test bench. In this paper, we will describe the in-situ and low field testbench setups used to perform a 3D mapping of the magnetic field. We will briefly detail the ingredients of our numerical model, especially the parallel algorithm proposed to apply efficiently the Biot and Savart’s law for computing the magnetic field produced by magnet inserts and seen by the researchers. Finally we will present the comparative study based on calculations and measurements that confirm the 3D distribution of the magnetic field and therefore validate to some extent our modeling choices. The periodic variations observed are related to the helical cut of the Polyhelix magnets. This study is an important step in the understanding of Polyhelix magnets behaviour.

Abstract: We present high field magnetoresistance, Hall effect and thermopower measurements in the Ising-type ferromagnetic superconductor UCoGe. Magnetic field is applied along the easy magnetization $c$ axis of the orthorhombic crystal. In the different experimental probes we observed five successive anomalies at $H \approx 4$, 9, 12, 16, and 21~T. Magnetic quantum oscillations were detected both in resistivity and thermoelectric power. Abstract: Bulk solidification of a Zn–6 wt.%Bi immiscible alloy was investigated under a weak transverse magnetic field. The results show that the thermoelectric magnetic flow induced by the thermoelectric magnetic force is present during the solidification process. An equation was established to describe the movement of Bi-rich droplets in the melt. Thermoelectric magnetic force affected the mass transfer and changed the segregation behavior of the Bi-rich phase. Thermoelectric magnetic flow affected the Stokes sedimentation of the Bi-rich droplets and modified the spatial and size distribution of the Bi-rich particles. This technique can be used to control the distribution of the immiscible phases in other similar alloys. Abstract: Electron spin dephasing is studied by time-resolved Kerr rotation in n-type modulation-doped CdMnTe quantum wells with very dilute Mn content. We find good agreement between measured and calculated electron spin relaxation times, considering relaxation induced by fluctuating exchange field created by the Mn spins, and taking into account inhomogeneous heating of the Mn spins by laser pulses.

Abstract: The purple molybdenum bronze KMo6O17 is a quasi-two-dimensional compound which shows a Peierls transition towards a commensurate metallic charge density wave (CDW) state. High magnetic field measurements have revealed several transitions at low temperature and have provided an unusual phase diagram “temperature-magnetic field”. Angular studies of the interlayer magnetoresistance are now reported. The results suggest that the orbital coupling of the magnetic field to the CDW is the most likely mechanism for the field induced transitions. The angular dependence of the magnetoresistance is discussed on the basis of a warped quasi-cylindrical Fermi surface and provides information on the geometry of the Fermi surface in the low temperature density wave state.

Abstract: International audience; The quantum efficiency of an electroluminescent intersubband emitter based on InAs/AlSb has been measured as a function of the magnetic field up to 20T. Two series of oscillations periodic in 1/B are observed, corresponding to the elastic and inelastic scattering of electrons of the upper state of the radiative transitions. Experimental results are accurately reproduced by a calculation of the excited state lifetime as a function of the applied magnetic field. The interpretation of these data gives an exact measure of the relative weight of the scattering mechanisms and allows the extraction of material parameters such as the energy dependent electron effective mass and the optical phonon energy

Abstract: Electron Cyclotron Resonance Ion Sources (ECRIS) deliver high intensities of multicharged heavy ions to accelerators; nowadays the evolution of science requires extremely intense ion beams. Since 1987, semi empirical scaling laws state that the ECR plasma density, in a minimum-B magnetic field configuration, varies like the square of the electromagnetic waves (EM) frequency or of the resonant magnetic induction. The present most performing ECRIS are operated at 28 GHz. In order to significantly increase the ion beam intensities, the use of EM with frequencies of the order of 60 GHz is evaluated worldwide. Conceptual studies based on superconductors are performed and different magnetic configurations accepting such a high ECR frequency are proposed by several groups. Since 2009, LPSC collaborates with IAP-RAS (Russia) and LNCMI (CNRS) and has built the first 60 GHz ECRIS with a topologically closed resonance zone, using radially cooled polyhelices. Unique ion beam intensities have been extracted through a 1mm hole, like 1.1 mA of O³⁺ (140 mA/cm²). Abstract: International audience; We have measured intrinsic tunneling spectra of charge density wave (CDW) materials NbSe3 and o-TaS3 in sub-micron scale mesa structures. Beyond the interband tunneling across the CDW gap, , we observe intragap states at the voltage which we associate with creation of the amplitude soliton. The onset of the tunneling occurs only above a threshold voltage followed by a quasi-periodic staircase spectrum. We interpret that behavior as the CDW phase decoupling between neighboring layers via the formation of a grid of dislocation lines. In NbSe3, the application of a high magnetic field (up to 27 T) yields a strong suppression of the tunneling density of states within the CDW gap indicating a possible field induced metal-insulator transition.

Abstract: We report on the optimization of the single-step nanolithography planar process that allows generation of the core-element of a spin-polarized magnetic memory in La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 (LSMO). Taking advantage of the proximity effects due to backscattered electrons, a conventional electron-beam patterning process at 30 keV has been optimized to generate sub-50 nm-wide nanokinks in the magnetic microbridge. The best layout for the nanokinks, the electron beam patterning parameters and the results of the ion beam etching (IBE) for transferring these nanopatterns in the magnetic oxide are reported.

Abstract: Purpose To evaluate whether static high magnetic fields (HMFs), in the range of 10–17 T, affect the cytoskeleton and cell organization in different types of mammalian cells, including fibroblasts, epithelial cells, and differentiating neurons. Materials and Methods Cells were exposed to HMF for 30 or 60 minutes and subsequently assessed for viability. Cytoskeleton arrays and focal adhesions were visualized using immunofluorescence microscopy. Results Cell exposure to HMF over 10 T in the case of cycling cells, and over 15 T in the case of neurons, affected cell viability, apparently because of cell detachment from culture dishes. In the remaining adherent cells, the organization of actin assemblies was perturbed, and both cell adhesion and spreading were impaired. Moreover, in the case of neurons, exposure to HMF induced growth cone retraction and delayed cell differentiation. Conclusion Cell exposure to HMF (over 10T and 15 T in the case of cycling cells and neurons, respectively) affects the cell cytoskeleton, with deleterious effects on cell viability, organization, and differentiation. Abstract: Compressed Pr0.5Ca0.5MnO3 films (250nm) deposited on LaAlO3 have been studied by Electron Spin Resonance technique under high frequency and high magnetic field. We show evidences for the presence of a ferromagnetic phase (FM) embedded in the charge-order phase (CO), in form of thin layers which size depends on the strength and orientation of the magnetic field (parallel or perpendicular to the substrate plane). This FM phase presents an easy plane magnetic anisotropy with an anisotropy constant 100 times bigger than typical bulk values. When the magnetic field is applied perpendicular to the substrate plane, the FM phase is strongly coupled to the CO phase whereas for the parallel orientation it keeps an independent ferromagnetic resonance even when the CO phase becomes antiferromagnetic., Comment: to be published in EPJB

Abstract: We report on the observation of quantized Hall plateaus in a system of two-dimensional Dirac fermions, implemented in a 6.6 nm HgTe quantum well at magnetic fields up to 34 T at nitrogen temperatures. The activation energies determined from the temperature dependence of the longitudinal resistivity are found to be almost equal for the filling factors ν of 1 and 2. This indicates that the large values of the g-factor (about 30–40) remain unchanged at very strong magnetic fields.

Abstract: We report measurements under pressure of the upper critical field of the heavy fermion superconductor ${\mathrm{UBe}}_{13}$. An interpretation in the framework of a simple strong coupling model is achieved consistently with only one arbitrary parameter: the strong coupling constant $\ensuremath{\lambda}$. We find that ${\mathrm{UBe}}_{13}$ is in an extreme strong coupling regime and that the variation of $\ensuremath{\lambda}$ with pressure explains the pressure dependence of the thermodynamic properties of both the normal and the superconducting phases. It reveals a strong interplay between the mass renormalization and the pairing mechanisms, yielding the first quantitative indication of a nonphonon mediated pairing in a superconductor.

Abstract: We studied the Rayleigh light scattering and the optical emission in GaAs-(Al,Ga)As superlattices with ordered and intentionally disordered potential profiles, correlated and uncorrelated, in external magnetic fields. We find that the intentional disorder along z affects the resonant Rayleigh scattering and the optical emission. The external magnetic field in the same direction allows to modify the exciton localization and to study the relative modification of the light scattering and of the emission spectra.

Abstract: International audience; EuxC6o compounds have been synthesized using high temperature solid-solid reaction. For x = 3 and 6 new crystalline structures appear. Mossbauer experiments reveal the simultaneous presence of Eu2+ and Eu3+ ions. In Eu6C60, ferromagnetic Eu pairs form at 65 K through a superexchange mechanism via the bucky balls. Higher clusters form at lower temperatures. In Eu3C60, relaxation effects can be related with the presence of an amorphous state.

Abstract: In the quest to increase the critical temperature Tc of cuprate superconductors, it is essential to identify the factors that limit the strength of superconductivity. The upper critical field Hc2 is a fundamental measure of that strength, yet there is no agreement on its magnitude and doping dependence in cuprate superconductors. Here we show that the thermal conductivity can be used to directly detect Hc2 in the cuprates YBa2Cu3Oy, YBa2Cu4O8 and Tl2Ba2CuO6+δ, allowing us to map out Hc2 across the doping phase diagram. It exhibits two peaks, each located at a critical point where the Fermi surface of YBa2Cu3Oy is known to undergo a transformation. Below the higher critical point, the condensation energy, obtained directly from Hc2, suffers a sudden 20-fold collapse. This reveals that phase competition—associated with Fermi-surface reconstruction and charge-density-wave order—is a key limiting factor in the superconductivity of cuprates., The point at which a magnetic field kills superconductivity in the cuprates has been difficult to measure. Grissonnanche et al. use thermal conductivity measurements to reliably determine this field and find that it drops suddenly below some critical doping, suggesting the onset of a new competing phase.

Abstract: We report on NMR and torque measurements on the frustrated quasi-two-dimensional spin-dimer system SrCu2(BO3)2 in magnetic fields up to 34 T that reveal a sequence of magnetization plateaus at 1/8, 2/15, 1/6, and 1/4 of the saturation and two incommensurate phases below and above the 1/6 plateau. The magnetic structures determined by NMR involve a stripe order of triplets in all plateaus, suggesting that the incommensurate phases originate from proliferation of domain walls. Abstract: We report results of systematic de Haas--van Alphen (dHvA) studies on Ce${}_{1\ensuremath{-}x}$Yb${}_{x}$CoIn${}_{5}$ single crystals with varying Yb concentration. For $x=0.1$, the well-known Fermi surfaces and the heavy effective masses of CeCoIn${}_{5}$ ($x=0$) have changed only slightly. We start to observe changes of the Fermi-surface topology at $x=0.2$ leading to a drastic reconstruction above $x=0.55$. At these concentrations, the effective masses are reduced considerably to values between 0.7 and 2.6 free electron masses. For both YbCoIn${}_{5}$ and CeCoIn${}_{5}$, the angular-resolved dHvA frequencies can be very well described by conventional density-functional theory calculations. Projection of the Bloch states onto atomic Yb-$4f$ orbitals yields a $4f$ occupation of $13.7$ electrons, in agreement with previous experimental results indicating an intermediate Yb valence of $+2.3$.

Abstract: This work is devoted to the studies of spin dynamics of magnetic Mn ions embedded in low-dimensional CdTe-based nanostructures. A particular emphasis is placed on the system of single CdTe quantum dots with single Mn ions, which give an insight into unperturbed interactions of magnetic ion with its semiconductor environment. A method of all-optical manipulation and readout of the spin state of a single magnetic ion is presented. The experiment exploits the spin-conserving exciton transfer between neighbouring quantum dots to inject polarized exitons into the dot with the Mn ion so as to orient its spin. The dynamics of the orientation process is measured in a time-resolved experiment and described with a simple rate equation model. One of possible orientation mechanisms - the dark excitons recombination - is discussed and shown experimentally. The optical orientation of the Mn ion is also used to investigate the spin-lattice relaxation of an isolated magnetic ion in low and high magnetic field. The work also addresses phenomena occurring in low and zero magnetic field in large systems of magnetic moments - quantum wells and quantum dots containing Mn ions. New experimental technique of fast magnetic pulses is used to investigate the Mn spin dynamics in the absence of magnetic field with nanosecond resolution. After the pulse of magnetic field, a fast decay of the magnetization is observed. The experimental findings are described in terms of hyperfine coupling with the nuclear spin of the Mn ions. The effect is highly sensitive to the presence of an anisotropy, particularly that introduced by hole gas and by strain. Application of the external magnetic field suppresses the fast dynamics in diluted magnetic quantum wells and a well known slow spin-lattice relaxation is observed. Surprisingly, quantum dots with many Mn ions show fast spin dynamics even after application of external field up to 0.5 T. The fast process may origin from the spin-spin interaction between the magnetic ions, especially if their spatial distribution within the dot is not uniform.; Ce travail présente l'étude de la dynamique de spins d'ions Mn insérés dans des structures de CdTe de faibles dimensions. L'accent est plus particulièrement mis sur des boîtes quantiques individuelles de CdTe contenant un ion Mn unique, ce qui permet d'accéder aux interactions non perturbées de l'ion magnétique avec son environnement semi-conducteur. Nous présentons une méthode purement optique de manipulation et de lecture des états de spin de l'ion magnétique unique. Les expériences utilisent le fait que les états de spin se conservent lors d'un transfert excitonique entre proches boîtes quantiques, pour injecter un exciton polarisé dans la boîte contenant l'ion Mn afin d'orienter son spin. Les dynamiques de processus de réorientation sont observées lors de mesures résolues en temps, puis analysées via un modèle simple d'équations de taux. Un des mécanismes possible de réorientation, la recombinaison d'excitons sombres, est présenté expérimentalement, puis discuté. L'orientation optique de l'ion Mn est aussi utilisée pour étudier les relaxations spin-réseau d'un ion magnétique isolé sous faibles et sous forts champs magnétiques. Ce travail décrit aussi les phénomènes présents pour des champs magnétiques nuls ou faibles dans des systèmes de moments magnétiques plus grands (puits et boîtes quantiques contenant plusieurs ions Mn). Nous observons une rapide décroissance de la magnétisation après une impulsion magnétique. Le phénomène est décrit en terme de couplage hyperfin avec le spin nucléaire des ions Mn. Cet effet est particulièrement sensible à toute anisotropie, notamment celles introduites par un gaz de trous ou par les contraintes du réseau. L'application d'un champ magnétique externe supprime les dynamiques rapides dans les puits quantiques magnétiques dilués et des phénomènes plus commun de relaxation lente spin-réseau sont alors observés. Il est toutefois surprenant que les boîtes quantiques avec un grand nombre d'ions Mn présentent ces dynamiques de spin rapides même après application d'un champ magnétique allant jusqu'à 0.5 T. Ce processus rapide pourrait venir des interactions spin-spin des ions Mn, en particulier si leur distribution spatiale n'est pas régulière à l'intérieur de la boîte.

Abstract: This work is devoted to the studies of spin dynamics of magnetic Mn ions embedded in low-dimensional CdTe-based nanostructures. A particular emphasis is placed on the system of single CdTe quantum dots with single Mn ions, which give an insight into unperturbed interactions of magnetic ion with its semiconductor environment. A method of all-optical manipulation and readout of the spin state of a single magnetic ion is presented. The experiment exploits the spin-conserving exciton transfer between neighbouring quantum dots to inject polarized exitons into the dot with the Mn ion so as to orient its spin. The dynamics of the orientation process is measured in a time-resolved experiment and described with a simple rate equation model. One of possible orientation mechanisms - the dark excitons recombination - is discussed and shown experimentally. The optical orientation of the Mn ion is also used to investigate the spin-lattice relaxation of an isolated magnetic ion in low and high magnetic field. The work also addresses phenomena occurring in low and zero magnetic field in large systems of magnetic moments - quantum wells and quantum dots containing Mn ions. New experimental technique of fast magnetic pulses is used to investigate the Mn spin dynamics in the absence of magnetic field with nanosecond resolution. After the pulse of magnetic field, a fast decay of the magnetization is observed. The experimental findings are described in terms of hyperfine coupling with the nuclear spin of the Mn ions. The effect is highly sensitive to the presence of an anisotropy, particularly that introduced by hole gas and by strain. Application of the external magnetic field suppresses the fast dynamics in diluted magnetic quantum wells and a well known slow spin-lattice relaxation is observed. Surprisingly, quantum dots with many Mn ions show fast spin dynamics even after application of external field up to 0.5 T. The fast process may origin from the spin-spin interaction between the magnetic ions, especially if their spatial distribution within the dot is not uniform., Ce travail présente l'étude de la dynamique de spins d'ions Mn insérés dans des structures de CdTe de faibles dimensions. L'accent est plus particulièrement mis sur des boîtes quantiques individuelles de CdTe contenant un ion Mn unique, ce qui permet d'accéder aux interactions non perturbées de l'ion magnétique avec son environnement semi-conducteur. Nous présentons une méthode purement optique de manipulation et de lecture des états de spin de l'ion magnétique unique. Les expériences utilisent le fait que les états de spin se conservent lors d'un transfert excitonique entre proches boîtes quantiques, pour injecter un exciton polarisé dans la boîte contenant l'ion Mn afin d'orienter son spin. Les dynamiques de processus de réorientation sont observées lors de mesures résolues en temps, puis analysées via un modèle simple d'équations de taux. Un des mécanismes possible de réorientation, la recombinaison d'excitons sombres, est présenté expérimentalement, puis discuté. L'orientation optique de l'ion Mn est aussi utilisée pour étudier les relaxations spin-réseau d'un ion magnétique isolé sous faibles et sous forts champs magnétiques. Ce travail décrit aussi les phénomènes présents pour des champs magnétiques nuls ou faibles dans des systèmes de moments magnétiques plus grands (puits et boîtes quantiques contenant plusieurs ions Mn). Abstract: The Fermi surface of graphite has been mapped out using de Haas van Alphen (dHvA) measurements at low temperature with in-situ rotation. For tilt angles $\theta>60^{\circ}$ between the magnetic field and the c-axis, the majority electron and hole dHvA periods no longer follow the $\cos(\theta)$ behavior demonstrating that graphite has a 3 dimensional closed Fermi surface. The Fermi surface of graphite is accurately described by highly elongated ellipsoids. A comparison with the calculated Fermi surface suggests that the SWM trigonal warping parameter $\gamma_3$ is significantly larger than previously thought.

Abstract: Huntington's disease (HD), caused by a mutation of the corresponding gene encoding the protein huntingtin (htt), is characterized by progressive deterioration of cognitive and motor functions, paralleled by extensive loss of striatal neurons. At the cellular level, pathogenesis involves an early and prolonged period of neuronal dysfunction followed by neuronal death. Understanding the molecular events driving these deleterious processes is critical to the successful development of therapies to slow down or halt the progression of the disease. Here, we examined biochemical processes in a HD ex vivo rat model, as well as in a HD model for cultured neurons using synchrotron-assisted Fourier transform infrared microspectroscopy (S-FTIRM). The model, based on lentiviral-mediated delivery of a fragment of the HD gene, expresses a mutant htt fragment in one brain hemisphere and a wild-type htt fragment in the control hemisphere. S-FTIRM allowed for high spatial resolution and distinction between spectral features occurring in gray and white matter. We measured a higher content of beta-sheet protein in the striatal gray matter exposed to mutant htt as early as 4 weeks following the initiation of mutant htt exposure. In contrast, white matter tracts did not exhibit any changes in protein structure but surprisingly showed reduced content of unsaturated lipids and a significant increase in spectral features associated with phosphorylation. The former is reminiscent of changes consistent with a myelination deficiency, while the latter is characteristic of early pro-apoptotic events. These findings point to the utility of the label-free FTIRM method to follow mutant htt's beta-sheet-rich transformation in striatal neurons ex vivo, provide further evidence for mutant htt amyloidogenesis in vivo, and demonstrate novel chemical features indicative of white matter changes in HD. Parallel studies in cultured neurons expressing the same htt fragments showed similar changes.

Abstract: International audience; High-magnetic-field measurements of the magnetic moment of single crystals of yttrium orthoferrite were performed by torque and vibrating sample magnetometers. We investigated the magnetic states before and at the end of the field-induced spin reorientation and compared them with the theoretical predictions given by a macrospin model. The model describes the spin reorientation for low magnetic fields well. For high magnetic fields, the model predicts a 90∘ spin rotation while the experiments indicate that the magnetic moment only rotates by 80∘ for H=74 kOe and remains about 10∘ out of a crystallographic axis, up to the highest measured field (280 kOe). This suggests that the initial magnetic interactions are altered by the strain induced by the spin reorientation, leading to a symmetry change.

Abstract: We report on de Haas-van Alphen effect measurements in the non-centrosymmetric systems CeCoGe3 and LaCoGe3 in magnetic field up to 28 Tesla. In both compounds, two new high frequencies were observed in high fields. The frequencies were not detected in previous lower field measurements. The frequencies do not originate from magnetic breakdown, and, therefore, are likely to be intrinsic features of the compounds. In CeCoGe3, the corresponding effective masses are strongly enhanced, being of the order of 30 bare electron masses., 3 pages, 4 figures, to be published in Proc. Int. Conf. Abstract: We report the preparation of nanostructured adap- tive polymer surfaces by diffusion of an amphihilic block copolymer toward the interface. The surface segregation of a diblock copolymer, polystyrene-block-poly(acrylic acid) (PS-b- PAA), occurred when blended with high molecular weight polystyrene employed as a matrix. On annealing, the polymer surfaces changed both the chemical composition and the hydrophilicity depending on the environment and pH, respec- tively. By exposure to either water vapor or air, the surface wettability varied between hydrophilic and hydrophobic. In addition, surface enrichment on diblock copolymer by water vapor annealing led to self-assembly occurring at the interface. Hence, nanostructured domains can be observed by AFM in liquid media. Moreover, the PAA segments placed at the interface respond to pH and can switch from an extended hydrophilic state at basic pH values to a collapsed hydrophobic state in acidic media. Abstract: The design and performance of two new devices adapted for high-frequency electron paramagnetic resonance (HF-EPR) in a broad frequency range are described. Both systems, a Fabry–Perot resonator and a rotating sample holder, rely on similar construction schemes and on the use of submicrometer piezoelectric positioners. A study of a single crystal of graphite allows illustrating the operation of these two new systems associated with our quasi-optical HF-EPR spectrometer.

Abstract: Fabrication of graphene structures has triggered vast research efforts focused on the properties of two-dimensional systems with massless Dirac fermions. Nevertheless, further progress in exploring this quantum electrodynamics system in solid-state laboratories seems to be limited by insufficient electronic quality of manmade structures and the crucial question arises whether existing technologies have reached their limits or major advances are in principle possible. Here we show that graphene in a significantly purer state can be found in nature on the surface of bulk graphite, in form of flakes decoupled from the substrate material. Probing such flakes with Landau level spectroscopy in the THz range at very low magnetic fields, we demonstrate a superior electronic quality of these ultra low density layers (n~3x10^9 cm^-2) expressed by the carrier mobility in excess of 10^7 cm^2/(V.s). Abstract: High magnetic field $^{63,65}$Cu NMR spectra were used to determine the local spin polarization in the 1/3 magnetization plateau of azurite, Cu$_3$(CO$_3$)$_2$(OH)$_2$, which is a model system for the distorted diamond antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 chain. The spin part of the hyperfine field of the Cu2 (dimer) sites is found to be field independent, negative and strongly anisotropic, corresponding to $\approx$10 % of fully polarized spin in a $d$-orbital. This is close to the expected configuration of the "quantum" plateau, where a singlet state is stabilized on the dimer. However, the observed non-zero spin polarization points to some triplet admixture, induced by strong asymmetry of the diamond bonds $J_1$ and $J_3$., Comment: Phys. Rev. Lett. 102, in press (2009)

Abstract: Magnetotransport of natural graphite and highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) has been measured at mK temperatures. Quantum oscillations for both electron and hole carriers are observed with orbital angular momentum quantum number up to $N\approx90$. A remarkable agreement is obtained when comparing the data and the predictions of the Slonczewski--Weiss--McClure tight binding model for massive fermions. No evidence for Dirac fermions is observed in the transport data which is dominated by the crossing of the Landau bands at the Fermi level, corresponding to $dE/dk_z=0$, which occurs away from the $H$ point where Dirac fermions are expected., 3 figures

Abstract: International audience; Resonant photoluminescence experiments performed on self-assembled InAs/GaAs quantum dots under strong magnetic field up to 28 T give rise to an accurate determination of the interband magneto-optical transitions. As this technique circumvents the homogeneous broadening of the transitions due to the size and composition fluctuations of the dots, the experimental spectra display well-defined peaks. A good agreement is found between the experimental data and calculations using an effective mass model including the coupling between the mixed exciton-LO phonon states. Transitions involving excitonic polarons are clearly identified. Moreover, a light-hole to conduction transition is also evidenced in agreement with previous theoritical predictions.

Abstract: We describe an infrared transmission study of a thin layer of bulk graphite in magnetic fields up to B = 34 T. Two series of absorption lines whose energy scales as sqrtB and B are present in the spectra and identified as contributions of massless holes at the H point and massive electrons in the vicinity of the K point, respectively. We find that the optical response of the K point electrons corresponds, over a wide range of energy and magnetic field, to a graphene bilayer with an effective inter-layer coupling 2\gamma_1, twice the value for a real graphene bilayer, which reflects the crystal ordering of bulk graphite along the c-axis. The K point electrons thus behave as massive Dirac fermions with a mass enhanced twice in comparison to a true graphene bilayer., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures
