Abstract

Two new dicationic ionic liquids were synthesized: bis-methyl imidazolium methylidene hexafluorophosphate [M(CH2)IM2 +][2PF 6 − ] and bis-methyl imidazolium propylidene hexafluorophosphate [M(CH2)3IM2 +][2PF 6 − ]. Their structures were identified by H, C, P, F NMR, FTIR/ATR, and FT-Raman spectroscopies in order to study the effect of cation alkyl chain length on vibration behaviors. Several changes were recorded, which were related to alkyl chain length. A frequency shift was observed in some modes while others remained insensitive. A greater number of peaks was found in the FTIR/ATR spectra and the FT-Raman spectra with increasing alkyl chain length, which indicated that chain length influences the N–C connection twisting. More peaks with strong intensity appeared for longer alkyl chain lengths.

Abstract

International audience; For many commercial drugs, reaching the central nervous system in large amount without damaging the blood-brain-barrier (BBB) remains a challenging task. We present here a supramolecular strategy aiming at using a well-defined cyclodextrincoated liposomes as drug carrier and adamantoyl saccharides as BBB-interacting ligands. In this study, the liposome is constituted of n-alkyldimethylammoniumcyclodextrins incorporated in the lipid bilayer of a 3/7 cholesterol/dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine mixture and the ligand is constituted of an adamantoylglucose molecule whose adamantoyl moiety can be included in the CD cavity. The whole supramolecular assembly has been characterized by light-scattering and 31P NMR measurements. Toxicity and permeability studies on an in vitro model of the BBB clearly demonstrated a 5-fold improved ability of the modified liposome to enter the BBB-endothelial cells compared to the non-coated liposome. Fluorescence labelling of these liposomes is also displayed with DiI as a fluorescent probe.

Abstract

Principal peculiarities of the use of phosphocontaining cyclodextrins as a new class of supramolecular structures are discussed. For the first time cyclodextrin perphosphite has been obtained and isolated in an individual state by the treatment of g -cyclodextrin with triazolide neopentylenephosphorous acid. Cyclodextrin perphosphite exhibited an unusual transphosphorylation under reaction with some chlorophosphites. The inclusion of adamantane into the cyclodextrin cavity results in slowing this reaction down. Some water-soluble cyclodextrin derivatives displayed high activity as phase transfer catalysts in biphase catalysis.

Abstract

Formation of inclusion complexes between the β-cyclodextrin and the potassium salt of o-, m-, and p-substituted monosulfonated triphenylphosphine derivatives was investigated in aqueous solution by NMR spectroscopy. Titration and continuous variation plots obtained from 31P and 1H NMR data indicate the formation of a 1:1 inclusion complex for the three phosphine isomers. T-ROESY NMR experiments show that in all cases a non-sulfonated aromatic ring was included into the hydrophobic cavity of β-cyclodextrin from the secondary hydroxyl groups side. The standard enthalpy and entropy of the inclusion process were estimated from the temperature dependence of the association constant. All inclusion complexes were enthalpy stabilized, but highly entropy destabilized.

Abstract

We have characterized ferromagnetic La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 thin films, of various thickness (in the range 500–1500 A) grown by pulsed laser deposition on different substrates such as (0 0 1)-SrTiO3, (0 0 1)-LaAlO3, (1 1 0)-NdGaO3 and (0 0 1)-LaSrGaO4, using atomic force microscopy (AFM) and magnetic force microscopy (MFM). AFM reveals an island-like growth surface morphology on all substrates. Both the roughness and the average grain size increase with the thickness of the film. Two types of magnetic patterns are imaged at room temperature (in the ferromagnetic state) with MFM. The first one, obtained for films grown on (0 0 1)-LaAlO3 and (0 0 1)-LaSrGaO4 substrates, shows “circular” droplets (or bubbles) contrasted domains revealing the existence of films with an easy direction of magnetization, M, out of the plane of the film. In this type of pattern, the average size of the bubbles increases with the thickness of the film. The second magnetic pattern, obtained in the case of (0 0 1)-SrTiO3 and (0 0 1)-NdGaO3 substrates, shows uniform color domains without contrasted domains implying the existence of films with an easy direction of magnetization, M, in the plane of the film. For such films, the MFM magnetic patterns are similar for each thickness. This study highlights the importance of the substrate choice and the thickness of the film on the magnetic microstructure of La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 films.

Abstract

Scanning tunneling microscopy has been used to image on a highly orientated pyrolytic graphite substrate an inclusion complex between the sodium salt of the trisulfonated triphenylphosphine (TPPTS) and the β-cyclodextrin (CyD). The images were in very good agreement with the structure that has been reported for this inclusion complex and it is postulated that β-CyD/TPPTS inclusion complex lies on the apolar graphite substrate by its primary face. A correlation of image contrast with the frontier orbitals of the inclusion complex is also clearly established for the first time in the case of CyD-based supramolecular assemblies. The self-assembly of the inclusion complexes on the graphic surface is also discussed.

Abstract

Zerovalent ruthenium(0) nanoparticles in the size range of 2.5 nm were easily prepared by chemical reduction of ruthenium salt with an excess amount of sodium borohydride and were efficiently stabilized by methylated cyclodextrins. The optimization of the catalytic system has been carried out in terms of stability and catalytic activity, considering the hydrogenation of olefinic compounds under biphasic liquid-liquid conditions. Efficient and controlled chemoselectivities were obtained in the hydrogenation of arene derivatives by the relevant choice of cavity and methylation degree of the cyclodextrins. Finally, the hydrogenation of alpha- and beta-pinenes leads to the major formation of cis-pinanes, interesting synthons for fine chemistry, with high diastereoisomeric excesses.

Abstract

Communication orale; International audience; CeMZNiXOY mixed oxides (M = Zr or Al, z = 0 or 0.5, 0 ´ x ´ 3) are large catalytic hydrogen reservoirs, called oxyhydrides, once treated in H2. A catalytic chemical reaction is used to reveal and titrate reactive hydrogen species present in the solid. The hydrogen reservoir capacity depends on the compound preparation, formulation, and activation. Among the solids studied, the highest amount of hydrogen (about 10 wt%) is stored in CeZr0.5Ni1OY pre-treated in H2 at 200°C. Different physico-chemical techniques including XPS, ion sputtering, XRD, TPR, TGA, and Inelastic Neutron Scattering (INS) have been used to characterize the solids. Depending on the composition and metal loading, a solid solution and/or a highly dispersed nickel oxide in ceria (or ceria-zirconia) can be obtained. Ion sputtering followed by XPS analysis has been very useful for estimating the size of NiO clusters (≡ 10 Å) present in the compounds. INS evidences the coexistence of different hydrogen species that can be related to hydride species, hydrogen species in interaction with metallic nickel, as well as hydrogen species from hydroxyl groups. Particular active sites, involving reactive hydrogen, are created during the activation of the mixed oxides.

Abstract

Interaction of hydrogen with a series of cerium nickel and zirconium (or aluminium) mixed oxides CeM 0.5 Ni x O y ( M = Zr or Al, 0 ⩽ x ⩽ 3 ) has been studied in the 50–800 °C temperature range. Hydrogenation of 2-methyl-1,3-diene (isoprene) under helium flow in the absence of gaseous hydrogen is used to reveal and titrate reactive hydrogen species present in the solid previously treated under H 2 at various temperatures. The CeM 0.5 Ni x O y mixed oxides are large catalytic hydrogen reservoirs and among the solids studied, the highest amount of hydrogen (about 10 wt%, 540 g/L) is stored in CeZr 0.5 Ni 1 O y pretreated in H 2 at about 200 °C. Compared to the binary mixed oxides CeNi x O y , the presence of M allows to increase the hydrogen storage and give a better stability to the system, in particular, with temperature. Different physico-chemical techniques (TPR, TGA …) have been used to characterize the solids studied.

Abstract

International audience; Are the liquid crystalline properties of the materials of living systems important in biological structures, functions, diseases and treatments? There is a growing consciousness that the observed lyotropic, and often thermotropic liquid crystallinity, of many biological materials that possess key biological functionality might be more than curious coincidence. Rather, as the survival of living systems depends on the flexibility and reformability of structures, it seems more likely that it is the combination of softness and structure of the liquid-crystalline state that determines the functionality of biological materials. The richest sources of liquid crystals derived from living systems are found in cell membranes, of these glycolipids are a particularly important class of components. In this critical review, we will examine the relationship between chemical structure and the self-assembling and self-organising properties of glycolipids that ultimately lead to mesophase formation.

Abstract

International audience; Cholesteric liquid crystals (CLC) selectively reflect light when the helical pitch is of the order of the wavelength of the incident beam propagating along the helix axis. The wavelength bandwidth, related to the optical anisotropy, is typically limited to a few tens of nanometers in the visible part of the spectrum, which is insufficient for applications such as white-or-black polarizer-free reflective displays and smart windows for the control of the solar light and heat. A way to make cholesteric films reflecting in a broad wavelength band consists in associating various cholesteric pitches in the same film. In this work, it is shown how a study by confocal micro Raman spectrometry mapping makes it possible to have access to information accounting for the local organization of CLCs in the case of graded pitch materials. These investigations will be correlated to the optical response and the transverse microstructure of the CLC material as investigated by transmission electron microscopy. An accurate analysis of the vibrational behavior evolution of the CO can be correlated to the evolution of the populations of the chiral and achiral groups in the case of the interdiffusion of two CLC substances with various stoechiometries. Besides an easy measurement of the Raman spectrum gives the opportunity to quantify the relative ratio of the mesogenic species and thus to go up by a simple way to the pitch of the helical structure.

Abstract

International audience; The toxicity of monosubstituted n-alkyldimethylammonium-β-cyclodextrins (DMA-Cn-CD with n = 2, 4 and 12) towards endothelial cells of an in vitro model of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) was evaluated and compared to that of the native β-CD. DMA-C12-CD was found to be non-toxic below 10 mM due to the self-inclusion of the alkyl chain in the CD cavity. A high percentage of passage (30%) of DMA-C12-CD through the endothelial cells has been measured.

Abstract

International audience; The modification of a silica gel by beta-cyclodextrin has been performed in a two-step procedure, by grafting the epoxy functions on the silica gel following by the reaction with the alcoholate of beta-cyclodextrin. A detailed characterization of these hybrid materials has been undertaken by FTIR. Raman, C-13 MAS NMR, TGA, N-2 sorption experiments. Before reaction with beta-cyclodextrin, the mean loading of the epoxy groups covalently bonded to the mineral surface, is about 580 mumol g((SiO2))(-1), corresponding to a surface coverage of 2.0 mumol m(-2). After the coupling reaction, materials with cyclodextrin group loadings up to 67 mumol g((SiO2))(-1) have been prepared. This indicates that about 11% of the immobilized glycidyl appears to be effective in covalently linking to the cyclodextrin moieties. Adsorption experiments, using methyl orange as a guest molecule, agree with the fact that the cyclodextrin silica-based materials present a greater ability for removing the organic compound from water. Nevertheless, additional interactions, other than inclusion process, could be involved at the highest concentrations of the dye. By diffuse reflectance, the UV-Vis spectral investigation of methyl orange coated on the materials with cyclodextrins gives rise to marked changes, ascribed to the formation of inclusion complexes inside the accessible beta-cyclodextrin cavities anchored to the mineral support.

Abstract

International audience; The number of N atoms in N-rich regions mostly due to nonrandom N incorporation in GaAsN (N∼4%), referred to as the Nr rate, is studied using a nonstandard Raman setup that addresses transverse symmetry. The Ga-N opticalrange shows a two-mode signal which discriminates between the N-poor ( Np ) and N-rich (Nr) regions. This is discussed via a percolation-based picture for Be-chalcogenide alloys, which exhibit mechanical contrast with regard to the shear modulus. This applies to GaAs-GaN even though the contrast is in the bulk modulus. The balance of Nr/Np strength provides a Nr rate of ∼30%, i.e., much larger than the corresponding Be rate of ∼4% in random Be-based alloys.

Abstract

International audience; The performances and characteristics of a polymer-cholestericliquid-crystal reflector, used as an output coupler in a Nd-doped fiber laser, are presented. We show that a judicious combination of a linear polarizer and a quarter wave plate with the cholesteric coupler allows for a continuous scanning of the output-intensity from zero to a maximum value following the well-known Malus law. The results are shown to be contained in a simple Jones Matrix formalism. The LP-QW-PCLC combination is characterized by a reflection coefficient that can be freely adjusted from 0 to 1 by a simple rotation of the quarter-wave plate.

Abstract

The synthesis of three fluorous triarylphosphites in which an ‘insulating’ ethylene segment separates the perfluoroalkylgroup from the aryl group is described. The stabilities, solubilities and partition coefficients of these new compounds are reported. The complexes generated in situ from these fluorous triarylphosphites and Rh(acac)(CO)2 have been tested as catalysts for the hydroformylation of various olefins under fluorous biphasic conditions. The activities and the selectivities were found to vary markedly with the position of the perfluoroalkylgroup on the aromatic ring. The possibility to recover the catalytic system was also investigated from consecutive recycling experiments.

Abstract

The interaction between the sodium salt of the monosulfonated triphenylphosphine and the g -cyclodextrin has been investigated in aqueous solution by high field nuclear magnetic resonance and UV-Vis spectroscopies. Continuous variation and titration plots obtained from NMR and UV-Vis data indicate formation of a 1:1 inclusion complex and allow to calculate an association constant of 12,000 M m 1 at 25°C. The T-ROESY NMR experiments complemented by molecular modelling suggest that one of non-sulfonated aromatic rings is included into the hydrophobic cavity of the g -cyclodextrin from the side of secondary hydroxyl groups. Formation of inclusion complex with the f - and n -cyclodextrin is also briefly discussed.

Abstract

The ruthenium-catalyzed hydrogenation of water-insoluble aldehydes in an aqueous/organic two phase system has been investigated in the presence of cosolvents or cyclodextrins. At low content, i.e. a content that enables to recover quantitatively the catalytic system without loss of metal with a cosolvent, β-cyclodextrin and its dimethylated form appear to be more efficient than cosolvents for performing the reaction. The formation of inclusion complexes between cyclodextrin and various components of the reaction medium (aldehyde, alcohol, hydrocarbon of the organic phase) is discussed on the basis of mass spectrometry, NMR and catalytic experiments.

Abstract

The synthesis of three triphenylphosphine analogues with phenyl groups replaced by (4- tert -butyl)phenyl and (3-sulfonato)phenyl group is described. The surface-active properties of these new compounds are reported. The catalytic activities obtained with these phosphines in the palladium-catalyzed cleavage of undecyl allyl carbonate were up to 24000 times higher than those observed with trisulfonated triphenylphosphine, the ligand typically used in biphasic catalysis. One of these catalysts can be recovered six times without loss of catalytic activity.

Abstract

The biphasic rhodium catalyzed hydroformylation of water insoluble olefins in the presence of chemically modified β-cyclodextrins has been investigated. The influence of various parameters, such as the nature of the β-cyclodextrin, the concentrations of phosphine or cyclodextrin and the temperature is illustrated using 1-decene as a model substrate. The formation of inclusion complexes between the different components of the system is also discussed on the basis of NMR experiments. The results indicate that the chemically modified cyclodextrins (CyDs) must not be considered only as inverse phase transfer catalysts but also as compounds which, by trapping the water soluble ligand, can modify the equilibria between the different catalytic species.

Abstract

The biphasic palladium-catalysed cleavage of water-insoluble allylic substrates in the presence of methylated cyclodextrins has been investigated with the aim of performing substrate-selective catalytic reactions. While no substrate selectivity was observed in control experiments in which acetonitrile was used as mass transfer promoter, the use of DMCyD led in some cases to high substrate selectivities. For instance, a 97:3 product ratio was observed during the cleavage of a 50:50 mixture of N-dodecyl-O-allyl urethane and N,N-dihexyl-O-allyl urethane. The whole results demonstrate that the size-fit concept which postulates the highest reactivity for the best size-matched host–guest pair is limited to predict the substrate selectivity.

Abstract

Colossal magnetoresistive (CMR) La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$MnO$_{3}$ (LSMO) thin films have been grown under tensile strains on (100)-SrTiO$_{3}$ substrates and compressive strains on (100)-LaAlO$_{3}$ and (110)-NdGaO$_{3}$ substrates by pulsed laser deposition. Using magnetic force microscopy (MFM), a "feather-like" magnetic pattern, characteristic of films with an in-plane magnetization, is observed for films deposited on both SrTiO$_{3}$ and NdGaO$_{3}$ while a "bubble" magnetic pattern, typical of films with an out-of plane magnetization, is recorded for LaAlO$_{3}$. We show that the shape of the magnetic pattern imaged by MFM is fully correlated to the easy direction of the magnetization in the film., Comment: Submitted to Applied Physics Letters

Abstract

International audience; Raman scattering is used to investigate p-type accumulation zones on the substrate side of ZnSe—GaAs heterostructures. The intensity imbalance between (i) the near-interfacial phonon-plasmon coupled mode located below the TO frequency and (ii) the uncoupled LO mode from the deep substrate, is studied at a single wavelength under increasing illumination. Competition between electric field-induced scattering and more trivial scattering volume effects is discussed.
