Abstract: International audience; Suspensions of non-Brownian particles display a complex rheology that originates in a subtle balance between hydrodynamic interactions and direct forces between particles, together with the so-called shear-induced microstructure. In particular, the influence of the microstructure has been qualitatively evidenced years ago in shear-reversal experiments. At the particle scale, experimental studies pointed the role played by the surface roughness of the particles in promoting direct contact between particles, and recent numerical computations suggest that contact friction between particles could be part of the explanation for the large viscosity of non-Brownian suspensions.In recent shear-reversal experiments, we have shown that the viscosity transient allows to quantitatively identify the contribution of the shear induced microstructure to the suspensions viscosity. As the volume increases, this contribution is increasingly predominant.To get a deeper insight on each step of the transient, we have performed numerical simulations of suspensions submitted to shear-reversal. The simulations account for short range lubrication interactions together with direct contact forces between particles, including surface roughness, contact elasticity and solid friction. The separated contributions of hydrodynamics and contact forces to the stress are identifyed during the transient and the influence of the contact law parameters are evaluated. In particular, we show that the contribution of the shear-induced microstructure to the viscosity that was determined in experiments provides an approximate measurement of the contribution of contact forces to the steady viscosity. In addition, at shear reversal, besides a short time contact force relaxation , the viscosity undergoes a finite jump at a more larger strain scale. This jump depends both on the roughness of the particle surface and on the friction coefficient between particles. A physical picture of this jump can be given from simple low Reynolds number hydrodynamics principles.

At the particle scale, experimental studies pointed the role played by the surface roughness of the particles in promoting direct contact between particles, and recent numerical computations suggest that contact friction between particles could be part of the explanation for the large viscosity of non-Brownian suspensions (S. Gallier et al. Rheology of sheared suspensions of rough frictional particles, Journal of Fluid Mechanics 757 (2014), 514–549). The present numerical study aims to estimate the influence of the contact law between particles on the suspension response to shear-reversal. The simulations are based on the Force Coupling Method, adapted to account for short range lubrication interactions together with direct contact forces between particles, including surface roughnes, contact elasticity and solid friction. The separated contributions of hydrodynamics and contact forces to the viscosity and normal stress differences are identifyed during the transient and the influence of the contact law parameters are evaluated. In particular, at shear reversal, a short time elastic relaxation is evidenced. At a more larger strain scale, the viscosity undergoes a finite jump. In the limit of small roughness height, this jump is directly related to the friction forces. Finally, such a transient provides an approximate measurement of the contribution of contact forces to the steady stress in the suspension, which is of interest from an experimental point of view.

Abstract: Phospholipidic membranes and vesicles constitute a basic element in real biological functions. Vesicles are viewed as a model system to mimic basic viscoelastic behaviors of some cells, like red blood cells. Phase field and level-set models are powerful tools to tackle dynamics of membranes and their coupling to the flow. These two methods are somewhat similar, but to date no bridge between them has been made. This is a first focus of this paper. Furthermore, a constitutive viscoelastic law is derived for the composite fluid: the ambient fluid and the membranes. We present two different approaches to deal with the membrane local incompressibility, and point out differences. Some numerical results following from the level-set approach are presented., Comment: 28 pages 7 figures

Abstract: International audience; In this paper we apply a recently released set of methane line parameters (Wang et al., 2011) to the modeling of Titan spectra in the 1.58 mu m window at both low and high spectral resolution. We first compare the methane absorption based on this new set of methane data to that calculated from the methane absorption coefficients derived in situ from DISR/Huygens (Tomasko et al., 2008a; Karkoschka and Tomasko, 2010) and from the band models of Irwin et al. (2006) and Karkoschka and Tomasko (2010). The Irwin et al. (2006) band model clearly underestimates the absorption in the window at temperature-pressure conditions representative of Titan's troposphere, while the Karkoschka and Tomasko (2010) band model gives an acceptable agreement in the whole window, overestimating the absorption by about 15% in the range 6300-6500 cm(-1). We also find that the transmittance of Titan's atmosphere is in excellent agreement with that calculated from the Tomasko et al. (2008a) coefficients after reducing them by about 7%. Synthetic spectra computed with spectral resolutions of 1.2 cm(-1) (R similar to 5400) and 0.35 cm(-1) (R similar to 18000) are then compared with two high-resolution Earth-based measurements of Titan's albedo obtained in 1982 and 1993 (with KPNO/FTS and IRTF/CSHELL). The new set of methane line parameters leads to an excellent match of all the CH3D and CH4 absorption features in these spectra, and permits us to derive a ratio of CH3D/CH4=(4.5 +/- 1.0) x 10(-4) - hence a D/H ratio in methane for Titan of (1.13 +/- 0.25) x 10(-4) - and a CO mole fraction of 40 +/- 10 ppm (from the KPNO/FTS dataset) and 51 +/- 7 ppm (from the IRTF/CSHELL dataset). We also infer constraints on the far-wing lineshape of methane lines of the 2v(3) band. We finally present two other examples of models of Titan's spectrum using the new line parameters, one potentially useful for future higher-resolution (R=40,000) observations, another one applicable to the ongoing low-resolution (R similar to 100) observations by Cassini VIMS. We show that the aerosol model of Tomasko et al. (2008b) produces too much intensity at low phase angle compared to a VIMS spectrum recorded near the Huygens site and we propose a slightly revised model that reproduces this observation.

Abstract: Two tetranuclear manganese(II) complexes {K(+)[Mn(4)(ThiaSO(2))(2)(OH)](-)} (1) and {K(+)[Mn(4)(ThiaSO(2))(2)(F)](-)} (2) have been synthesized under solvothermal conditions in methanol with p-tert-butylsulfonylcalix[4]arene (ThiaSO(2)). For both complexes, the structure has been established from single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The two complexes are best described as manganese squares sandwiched between two thiacalixarene macrocycles. In both complexes, in the center of the square formed by the four manganese(II) atoms, the unexpected presence of μ(4)-OH(-) or μ(4)-F(-) gives a negative charge to the cluster. The two tetranuclear complexes exhibit strong orange luminescence behavior resulting from the symbiosis between the ThiaSO(2) and the Mn(2+). Despite similar chemical formulation, (1) and (2) present difference in emission intensity and lifetime τ.

Abstract: The updated 2009 edition of the spectroscopic database GEISA (Gestion et Etude des Informations Spectroscopiques Atmosphériques; Management and Study of Atmospheric Spectroscopic Information) is described in this paper. GEISA is a computer-accessible system comprising three independent sub-databases devoted, respectively, to: line parameters, infrared and ultraviolet/visible absorption cross-sections, microphysical and optical properties of atmospheric aerosols. In this edition, 50 molecules are involved in the line parameters sub-database, including 111 isotopologues, for a total of 3,807,997 entries, in the spectral range from 10-6 to 35,877.031cm-1.The successful performances of the new generation of hyperspectral sounders depend ultimately on the accuracy to which the spectroscopic parameters of the optically active atmospheric gases are known, since they constitute an essential input to the forward radiative transfer models that are used to interpret their observations. Currently, GEISA is involved in activities related to the assessment of the capabilities of IASI (Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer; http://smsc.cnes.fr/IASI/index.htm) on board the METOP European satellite through the GEISA/IASI database derived from GEISA. Since the Metop-A (http://www.eumetsat.int) launch (19 October 2006), GEISA is the reference spectroscopic database for the validation of the level-1 IASI data. Also, GEISA is involved in planetary research, i.e. modeling of Titan's atmosphere, in the comparison with observations performed by Voyager, or by ground-based telescopes, and by the instruments on board the Cassini-Huygens mission.GEISA, continuously developed and maintained at LMD (Laboratoire de Météorologie Dynamique, France) since 1976, is implemented on the IPSL/CNRS (France) "Ether" Products and Services Centre WEB site (http://ether.ipsl.jussieu.fr), where all archived spectroscopic data can be handled through general and user friendly associated management software facilities. Abstract: International audience; Colorectal cancer is a major health issue worldwide. Conventional white light endoscopy (WLE) coupled to histology is considered as the gold standard today and is the most widespread technique used for colorectal cancer diagnosis. However, during the early stages, colorectal cancer is very often characterized by flat adenomas which develop just underneath the mucosal surface. The use of WLE, which is heavily based on the detection of morphological changes, becomes quite delicate due to subtle or quasi-invisible morphological changes of the colonic lining. Several techniques are currently being investigated in the scope of providing new tools that would allow such a diagnostic or assist actual techniques in so doing. We hereby present a novel technique where high spatial resolution MRI is combined with autofluorescence and reflectance spectroscopy in a bimodal endoluminal probe to extract morphological data and biochemical information, respectively. The design and conception of the endoluminal probe are detailed and the promising preliminary results obtained in vitro (home-built phantom containing eosin and rhodamine B), on an organic sample (the kiwi fruit) and in vivo on a rabbit are presented and discussed.

Abstract: Inspired by experiments on the actin driven propulsion of micrometer sized beads we develop and study a minimal mechanical model of a two-dimensional network of stiff elastic filaments grown from the surface of a cylinder. Starting out from a discrete model of the network structure and of its microscopic mechanical behavior we derive a macroscopic constitutive law by homogenization techniques. We calculate the axisymmetric equilibrium state and study its linear stability depending on the microscopic mechanical properties. We find that thin networks are linearly stable, whereas thick networks are unstable. The critical thickness for the change in stability depends on the ratio of the microscopic elastic constants. The instability is induced by the increase in the compressive load on the inner network layers as the thickness of the network increases. The here employed homogenization approach combined with more elaborate microscopic models can serve as a basis to study the evolution of polymerizing actin networks and the mechanism of actin driven motion., 19 pages, 7 figures

Abstract: This is the second of a series of articles reporting critically evaluated rotational-vibrational line positions, transition intensities, pressure dependences, and energy levels, with associated critically reviewed assignments and uncertainties, for all the main isotopologues of water. This article presents energy levels and line positions of the following singly deuterated isotopologues of water: HD16O, HD17O, and HD18O. The MARVEL (measured active rotational-vibrational energy levels) procedure is used to determine the levels, the lines, and their self-consistent uncertainties for the spectral regions 0-22708, 0-1674, and 0-12105cm-1 for HD16O, HD17O, and HD18O, respectively. For HD16O, 54740 transitions were analyzed from 76 sources, the lines come from spectra recorded both at room temperature and from hot samples. These lines correspond to 36690 distinct assignments and 8818 energy levels. For HD17O, only 485 transitions could be analyzed from three sources; the lines correspond to 162 MARVEL energy levels. For HD18O, 8729 transitions were analyzed from 11 sources and these lines correspond to 1864 energy levels. The energy levels are checked against ones determined from accurate variational nuclear motion computations employing exact kinetic energy operators. This comparison shows that the measured transitions account for about 86% of the anticipated absorbance of HD16O at 296K and that the transitions predicted by the MARVEL energy levels account for essentially all the remaining absorbance. The extensive list of MARVEL lines and levels obtained are given in the Supplementary Material of this article, as well as in a distributed information system applied to water, W@DIS, where they can easily be retrieved. In addition, the transition and energy level information for H217O and H218O, given in the first paper of this series [Tennyson, et al. Abstract: 16 pages, 14 figures, chapter in book "Cell mechanics: from single scale-based models to multiscale modelling"; Eukaryotic cells and intracellular pathogens such as bacteria or viruses utilize the actin polymerization machinery to propel themselves forward. Thereby, the onset of motion and choice of direction may be the result of a spontaneous symmetry-breaking or might be triggered by external signals and preexisting asymmetries, e.g. through a previous septation in bacteria. Although very complex, a key feature of cellular motility is the ability of actin to form dense polymeric networks, whose microstructure is tightly regulated by the cell. These polar actin networks produce the forces necessary for propulsion but may also be at the origin of a spontaneous symmetry-breaking. Understanding the exact role of actin dynamics in cell motility requires multiscale approaches which capture at the same time the polymer network structure and dynamics on the scale of a few nanometers and the macroscopic distribution of elastic stresses on the scale of the whole cell. In this chapter we review a selection of theories on how mechanical material properties and growth processes interact to induce the onset of actin based motion.

Abstract: Background Due to their unique ability to bind their targets with high fidelity, antibodies are used widely not only in biomedical research, but also in many clinical applications. Recombinant antibodies, including single chain variable fragments (scFv), are gaining momentum because they allow powerful in vitro selection and manipulation without loss of function. Regardless of the ultimate application or type of antibody used, precise understanding of the interaction between the antibody's binding site and its specific target epitope(s) is of great importance. However, such data is frequently difficult to obtain. Results We describe an approach that allows detailed characterization of a given antibody's target(s) using the yeast two-hybrid system. Several recombinant scFv were used as bait and screened against highly complex cDNA libraries. Systematic sequencing of all retained clones and statistical analysis allowed efficient ranking of the prey fragments. Multiple alignment of the obtained cDNA fragments provided a selected interacting domain (SID), efficiently narrowing the epitope-containing region. Interactions between antibodies and their respective targets were characterized for several scFv. For AA2 and ROF7, two conformation-specific sensors that exclusively bind the activated forms of the small GTPases Rab6 and Rab1 respectively, only fragments expressing the entire target protein's core region were retained. This strongly suggested interaction with a non-linear epitope. For two other scFv, TA10 and SF9, which recognize the large proteins giantin and non-muscle myosin IIA, respectively, precise antibody-binding regions within the target were defined. Finally, for some antibodies, secondary targets within and across species could be revealed. Conclusions Our method, utilizing the yeast two-hybrid technology and scFv as bait, is a simple yet powerful approach for the detailed characterization of antibody targets. It allows precise domain mapping for linear epitopes, confirmation of non-linear epitopes for conformational sensors, and detection of secondary binding partners. This approach may thus prove to be an elegant and rapid method for the target characterization of newly obtained scFv antibodies. It may be considered prior to any research application and particularly before any use of such recombinant antibodies in clinical medicine.

Abstract: International audience; In this paper, we develop a new strategy for designing organic molecules exhibiting at the same time a strong two-photon absorption and a good transparency in the visible region: the oligomeric strategy. At the present time, these two properties are hardly simultaneously fulfilled only by a few existing organic molecules. This approach does not involve any charge transfer and then contrasts with the donor−acceptor strategy. The one- and two-photon absorption properties of 9,9-dihexylfluorene oligomers are first presented and then analyzed thanks to a simple three-level excitonic coupling model. This model, which succeeds in reproducing the experimental data, is then used as a prospective tool, and a set of simple rules is extracted for improving the optical properties of this family of molecules.

Abstract: This paper presents the growth and characterization of three-dimensional structures using metal-organic (or organometallic) chemical precursors like M(CH 3 ) 3 , where M is a metal. Their morphology depends principally on growth temperature and conditions at the surface of the substrate. These 3D structures can be separated into two classes: i) one with (Ga, Al, In) metallic alloys shaped as sphere, sceptre or cylinder and a carbon membrane covering the alloy; ii) the other with semiconductor or oxide nanowires capped by a metallic sphere. The metal-organic precursors can be seen as catalysts molecules that grow semiconductors with micro and nanostructures similar to the role of gold particles used to grow nanowires in the VLS mechanism. We present the MOCVD growth of Ga 2 O 3 , CuGa x O y and (Ga,In)P nanowires using the metal-organic precursors on metallic or metal containing substrates.

Abstract: International audience; We evaluated in vivo reflectance spectroscopy of visible light as a method to assess brain tissue hemoglobin oxygen saturation in rat striatum (SstrO2). Seven anesthetized and mechanically ventilated rats were subjected to incremental reduction in the fraction of inspired oxygen (Fio2): 0.35, 0.25, 0.15, 0.12, and 0.10, followed by a reoxygenation period (Group 1). At each episode, local changes in SstrO2 and in cerebral blood flow (LCBF) were simultaneously determined in the two striatal regions, using reflectance spectroscopy and laser Doppler flowmetry, respectively. Another group of rats (Group 2, n = 6) was also studied to measure sagittal sinus blood hemoglobin saturation (SssO2) during graded hypoxic hypoxia. Corpus striatum exhibited a significant graded decrease in SstrO2, from 38% +/- 17% at Fio2 of 0.35 (control) to 16% +/- 10% at Fio2 of 0.12 and to 13% +/- 7% at Fio2 of 0.10 (P < 0.05), with no difference between the two hemispheres. These local changes in SstrO2 were associated with a significant graded increase in LCBF: 161% +/- 26% of control values and 197% +/- 34% during these 2 hypoxic episodes, respectively (P < 0.05). All local changes were fully reversed during the reoxygenation period. In Group 2, SssO2 decreased from 38% +/- 8% at Fio2 of 0.35 (control) to 10% +/- 3% at Fio2 of 0.10, closely related to SstrO2 decreasing in hypoxia. This study shows that reflectance spectroscopy of the visible light in rat striatum could be a possible measure of continuous changes in SstrO2. SssO2 and LCBF measurements during graded hypoxic hypoxia indicate that changes in SstrO2 reflect primarily those in brain venous oxygenation.

Abstract: Yttrium titanate (YTO) thin films doped with rare earth elements have been deposited using the aerosol–gel process. The up-conversion emission (UPE) of films doped with erbium and/or thulium has been studied with respect to the film crystallization degree and rare earth concentration. The effects of ytterbium codoping have been considered as well. Mechanisms that control UPE of YTO films are discussed with respect to the experimental conditions. It is shown that films, which selectively emit in the blue (1G4→3H6 transition of thulium ions), green (2H11/2→4I15/2 and 4S3/2→4I15/2 transitions of erbium ions), or red (4F9/2→4I15/2 transition of erbium ions), can readily be achieved.

Abstract: International audience; We have measured the rotationless photodissociation threshold of six isotopologues of NO2 containing 14N, 15N, 16O, and 18O isotopes using laser induced fluorescence detection and jet cooled NO2 ~to avoid rotational congestion!. For each isotopologue, the spectrum is very dense below the dissociation energy while fluorescence disappears abruptly above it. The six dissociation energies ranged from 25 128.56 cm21 for 14N16O2 to 25 171.80 cm21 for 15N18O2 . The zero point energy for the NO2 isotopologues was determined from experimental vibrational energies, application of the Dunham expansion, and from canonical perturbation theory using several potential energy surfaces. Using the experimentally determined dissociation energies and the calculated zero point energies of the parent NO2 isotopologue and of the NO product~s! we determined that there is a common De 526 051.1760.70 cm21 using the Born-Oppenheimer approximation. The canonical perturbation theory was then used to calculate the zero point energy of all stable isotopologues of SO2, CO2 , and O3 , which are compared with previous determinations.

Abstract: International audience; We propose a new canonical procedure for investigating non-Born–Oppenheimer dynamics. This procedure is based on Van Vleck's theory and expressed in the normal coordinates of one of the diabatically coupled electronic surfaces. Up to intermediate energies, the successive unitary transformations convert the smooth, non-resonant part of the energy shifts due to the diabatic coupling into anharmonicities and off-diagonal couplings inside each surface. As a result, in this energy range, the two transformed electronic surfaces remain fairly decoupled. We also show that, because of the reduced coupling range, the size of the matrix needed to calculate the exact energy levels is substantially reduced, which is promising for future practical applications.

Abstract: This article proposes an unified presentation of recent results dealing with canonical perturbation theory (also called the contact transformation method in the quantum mechanical context), which shows how the theory is best handled for investigating the highly excited dynamics of small molecules. The following systems are successively addressed: (i) semi-rigid molecules (one electronic surface, one minimum), (ii) floppy molecules (one electronic surface, several minima), and (iii) non-BornOppenheimer dynamics (several interacting electronic surfaces). Abstract: International audience; Molecular vibrations of the molecule HCN/CNH are examined using a combination of a minimum energy path Hamiltonian and high order canonical perturbation theory , as suggested in a recent work [D. Sugny and M. Joyeux, J. Chem. Phys. 112, 31 (2000)]. In addition, the quantum analog of the classical CPT is presented and results obtained therefrom are compared to the classical ones. The MEP Hamiltonian is shown to provide an accurate representation of the original potential energy surface and a convenient starting point for the CPT. The CPT results are subsequently used to elucidate the molecular dynamics: It appears that the isomerization dynamics of HCN/CNH is very trivial, because the three vibrational modes remain largely decoupled up to and above the isomerization threshold. Therefore, the study of the three-dimensional HCN/CNH system can be split into the study of several one-dimensional bending subsystems, one for each value of the numbers v1 and v3 of quanta in the CH and CN stretches. In particular, application of high order CPT to the most precise available ab initio surface provides simple expressions (quadratic polynomials) for the calculation of the heights of the isomerization barrier and of the CNH minimum above the HCN minimum for each value of v1 and v3.

Abstract: International audience; This work is aimed at extending recent studies dealing with the highly excited vibrational dynamics of HOCl [J. Chem. Phys. 111, 6807 (1999); J. Chem. Phys. 112, 77 (2000)], by taking advantage of the fact that the OH-stretch remains largely decoupled from the two other degrees of freedom up to and above the dissociation threshold. The molecule is thus reduced to a two-dimensional (2D) system by freezing the OH bond length to its equilibrium value. All of the calculated bound states of the 2D system, as well as the first 40 resonances, can be assigned with a Fermi polyad quantum number. The bifurcation diagram of the principal families of periodic orbits (POs) is extended to higher energies compared to 3D studies. In particular, the birth of ''inversion'' states (states exploring two equivalent wells connected through the linear HOCl configuration) is related to a period-doubling bifurcation of the families of bending POs, while ''dissociation'' states (states for which the energy flows back and forth along the dissociation pathway) are shown to lie on top of three successive families of POs born at saddle-node bifurcations. Based on the derivation of a classical analogue of the quantum Fermi polyad number, the energies of particular quantum states and classical POs are plotted on the same diagram for the 2D ab initio surface and are shown to agree perfectly. In contrast, comparison of classical Poincaré surfaces of section and quantum Husimi distributions suggests that the classical dynamics of 2D HOCl is much more chaotic than the quantum dynamics. This observation is discussed in terms of the quantum/classical correspondence, and particularly of the vague tori introduced by Reinhardt. It is nevertheless shown that quantum and classical mechanics agree in predicting a slow intramolecular vibrational energy redistribution (IVR) between the OCl stretch and the bend degrees of freedom.

Abstract: International audience; Canonical perturbation theory (CPT) is a powerful tool in the field of molecular physics. It consists of a series of coordinate transformations aimed at rewriting the Hamiltonian in a simpler form without modifying the geometry of the phase space. The major achievement of CPT is the straightforward derivation of relations between the physically meaningful parameters of potential energy surfaces and the coefficients of the so-called effective Hamiltonians. While most of the studies performed up to date deal with surfaces expanded in polynomial series around a single minimum, CPT has also been applied to mixed polynomial/trigonometric expansions in the treatment of torsions. In this latter case, however, the accuracy of CPT has not been verified. The goal of this article is to suggest some modifications of the procedures, which allow for the successful application of CPT to floppy molecules with several equilibrium positions and nonpolynomial expansions. The levels belonging to all the wells or located above the saddle points are satisfactorily reproduced by the perturbative Hamiltonian. More precisely, the vibrational modes are sorted into two categories, namely oscillator-like ones and hindered-rotor-like ones. The application of CPT enables the expression of the Hamiltonian in terms of the good quantum numbers and/or classical constants of the motion associated with the oscillator-like modes. The perturbative Hamiltonian then acts on the reduced dimensional space of the hindered-rotor-like modes. The validity and accuracy of this approach are tested on two-dimensional and three-dimensional models mimicking, respectively, nonlinear and linear HCN.

Abstract: International audience; The vibrational spectrum of HCP (phosphaethyne) is studied and analyzed in terms of a 1:2 resonance effective Hamiltonian. The parameters of the model Hamiltonian are determined by fitting 361 out of the first 370 energy levels obtained from diagonalization of the full Hamiltonian, which is based on a newly calculated potential-energy surface with near spectroscopic accuracy. It is demonstrated that all features characteristic of the approach to the HCP/CPH isomerization, such as the strong mixing between the bending and CP-stretching motions, the appearance of ‘‘isomerization states'' (large amplitude bending motion) at intermediate energies, and the diagnostically significant appearance of a zig–zag pattern in the energy spacings between neighboring levels within each polyad, are quantitatively reproduced by the effective Hamiltonian. The semiclassical analysis of the model Hamiltonian for specific combinations of the HC-stretch and polyad quantum numbers explains all of the observed features of the full Hamiltonian in terms of stable and unstable periodic orbits. In particular, the birth of the isomerization states is found to be related to a saddle-node bifurcation of the classical phase space. The connection with the ‘‘polyad phase sphere'' representation of quantum polyads is also discussed

Abstract: We report on the photoluminescence quantum efficiency and the lifetime of two Si/CaF2 heterostructures grown by molecular beam epitaxy. The first is a nanocrystalline Si/CaF2 multiquantum well which consists of interacting Si nanocrystallites within Si layers; the second is an annealed Si/CaF2 multiquantum well which can be described as a collection of non-interacting Si nanocrystallites embedded in the CaF2 matrix. While a photoluminescence efficiency of 0.01% has been found in the former, it reaches 1% in the latter. The energy dependence of the PL lifetime differs drastically between both sets of samples. These results are explained in terms of carrier localization.

Abstract: The elaboration by molecular beam epitaxy of a new luminescing Si-based material is presented, i.e. small grain polycrystalline Si/CaF 2 multi-quantum wells. The static luminescence properties are studied as a function of Si layer thickness, and the time dependent luminescence features as a function of wavelength and temperature. There is a rather striking similarity with the photoluminescence of porous Si, both in spectral position as in decay dynamics. The disappearance of the luminescence when the Si layers become too thick, and the blue-shift of the spectra when the Si layer thickness decreases, favour the quantum confinement hypothesis for the origin of the light emission. The important role of oxygen as passivating agent after ageing in air, is also pointed out.

Abstract: Four organic dyes specifically designed for application in dye-sensitized solar cells are reported. These dyes are based on a perfectly identical π-conjugated backbone and only differ by the number and the nature of the alkyl chain substituents employed as solubilizing groups. These sensitizers have outstanding light absorption properties in the visible range up to 750 nm on TiO2 and they exhibit quite similar energy level positions. Solar cells fabricated and characterized under exactly the same conditions with iodine-based liquid electrolytes show performances ranging from 6.53% to 9.05%. We highlight that the nature and the number of solubilizing groups have a tremendous impact on the performances of solar cells. The differences in the performance of the four sensitizers can be correlated with the current generation, the formation of aggregates and the dye-loading on the electrodes. We also report solar cells with ionic liquid electrolytes that demonstrate power conversion efficiencies up to 7.81% and a good stability of the performances under accelerated ageing conditions for 7300 hours. We establish that the number and the type of solubilizing groups attached on the π-conjugated backbone of the dyes have a strong influence not only on the performances but also on the lifetimes of the devices; i.e. the dyes that contain lower ratios of alkyl groups lead to the more stable cells.

Abstract: International audience; There is increasing evidence that mammalian cells not only crawl on substrates but can also swim in fluids. To elucidate the mechanisms of the onset of motility of cells in suspension, a model which couples actin and myosin kinetics to fluid flow is proposed and solved for a spherical shape. The swimming speed is extracted in terms of key parameters. We analytically find super-and subcritical bifurcations from a non-motile to a motile state and also spontaneous polarity oscillations that arise from a Hopf bifurcation. Relaxing the spherical assumption, the obtained shapes show appealing trends.

Abstract: We use X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy (XPCS) to investigate the dynamics of a stretched elastomer by means of probe particles. The particles dispersed in the elastomer were carbon black or silica aggregates classically used for elastomer reinforcement but their volume fraction is very low (ϕ < 10−2). We show that their dynamics is slower in the direction of the tensile strain than in the perpendicular one. For hydroxylated silica which is poorly wetted by the elastomer, there is no anisotropy. Two-time correlation functions confirm anisotropic dynamics and suggest dynamical heterogeneity already expected from the q−1 behavior of the relaxation times. The height χ* of the peak of the dynamical susceptibility, determined by the normalized variance of the instantaneous correlation function, is larger in the direction parallel to the strain than in the perpendicular one. It also appears that its q dependence changes with the morphology of the probe particle. Therefore, the heterogeneous dynamic probed by the particles is not related only to that of the strained elastomer matrix. In fact, it results from modification of the dynamics of the polymer chains near the surface of the particles and within the aggregate porosity (bound polymer). It is concluded that XPCS is a powerful method for investigating the dynamics, at a given strain, of the bound polymer–particle units which are responsible, at large volume fractions, for the reinforcement.

Abstract: Diffractive approaches are needed when refractive microlenses reach their focusing limit at the micron-scale in visible light. Previously, we have reported on micron-sized optical lenses based on the diffraction of metallic nanowires. Here, we extend our study to lenses based on pairs of subwavelength dielectric scatterers. Using simulations by two-dimensional finite element method, we demonstrate that focusing holds for pair spacings as small as the wavelength-size. For pairs with distances between inner walls larger than about 1.2λ, the scattered waves generate a quadratic phase modulation on the total propagating field leading to a diffraction-limited focusing i.e. an effective optical lens effect with high numerical aperture. In addition, they have low sidelobe intensities, long depths of focus, and they have a low sensitivity with polarization. For pairs with inner wall distances smaller than about 1.2λ, the focusing phase modulation is accumulated during the propagation through the dielectric pair structure. In this work, we report only on the experimental demonstration for the case of larger wall separation to emphasize on the scattered wave effect on micro-focusing. A pair of parallel polymer lines (cylindrical lens), and a grid of polymer lines (square microlens array) with 2 μm-spacing were fabricated by two-photon induced polymerization. Their focal lengths are comparable to their separating distances, their spot-sizes are 0.37 μm and 0.28 μm at wavelength 530 nm, and their focusing efficiencies are 70% and 60%, respectively.

Abstract: The room temperature absorption spectrum of 17O enriched carbon dioxide is investigated by high sensitivity cavity ring down spectroscopy (CRDS) between 5695 and 5850 cm−1. About 1100 lines are measured and assigned to 26 bands of the six 17O containing carbon dioxide isotopologues: 16O12C17O, 16O13C17O, 17O12C18O, 17O13C18O, 12C17O2 and 13C17O2. The set of observed lines are rovibrationnally assigned on the basis of the predictions of the effective Hamiltonian (EH) model. The observed bands belong to the ΔP = 8 and 9 series of transitions where P = 2 V1 + V2 + 3 V3 is the polyad number (Vi being the vibrational quantum numbers). They consist in 12 previously unobserved bands and 14 already-known bands, for which additional high J lines are assigned. Bands of the 12C17O2 and 13C17O2 isotopologues (two for each) are observed for the first time in this spectral interval. The spectroscopic parameters of the upper vibrational levels are determined from a band-by-band fit of the line positions (typical rms deviations are less than 0.001 cm−1). The comparison to the most recent carbon dioxide spectroscopic databases is presented. The reported data will be used to improve the modeling of the line positions of 17O containing carbon dioxide isotopologues.

Abstract: Microflows constitute an important instrument to control particle dynamics. A prominent example is the sorting of biological cells, which relies on the ability of deformable cells to move transversely to flow lines. A classic result is that soft microparticles migrate in flows through straight microchannels to an attractor at their center. Here, we show that flows through wavy channels fundamentally change the overall picture. They lead to the emergence of a second, coexisting attractor for soft particles. Its emergence and off-center location depends on the boundary modulation and the particle properties. The related cross-stream migration of soft particles is explained by analytical considerations, Stokesian dynamics simulations in unbounded flows, and Lattice-Boltzmann simulations in bounded flows. The novel off-center attractor can be used, for instance, in diagnostics, for separating cells of different size and elasticity, which is often an indicator of their health status.

Abstract: Integrins are transmembrane receptors that have a pivotal role in mechanotransduction processes by connecting the extracellular matrix to the cytoskeleton. Although it is well established that integrin activation/inhibition cycles are due to highly dynamic interactions, whether integrin mobility depends on local tension and cytoskeletal organization remains surprisingly unclear. Using an original approach combining micropatterning on glass substrates to induce standardized local mechanical constraints within a single cell with temporal image correlation spectroscopy, we measured the mechanosensitive response of integrin mobility at the whole cell level and in adhesion sites under different mechanical constraints. Contrary to β1 integrins, high tension increases β3 integrin residence time in adhesive regions. Chimeric integrins and structure–function studies revealed that the ability of β3 integrins to specifically sense local tensional organization is mostly encoded by its cytoplasmic domain and is regulated by tuning the affinity of its NPXY domains through phosphorylation by Src family kinases.

Abstract: Thianthrenes have been nearly forgotten as phosphors in recent years, but are now coming back, showing their strong potential in luminescent applications. Here, we present a comprehensive photophysical study of a carbazolyl derivative of thianthrene in different matrices and environments. The diffusion of oxygen is slowed down in the rigid environment of thianthrene organic crystals, suppressing their phosphorescence quenching.Triplet–triplet annihilation is also not significantly active in these systems. Both conditions facilitate the observation of simultaneous fluorescence and phosphorescence emissions at room temperature, in air, giving origin to strong white luminescence. Moreover, the color coordinates of the dual fluorescence–phosphorescence white emission, which is observed only in rigid amorphous media and in crystals, can be tuned.

Abstract: We investigate analytically the transport characteristics of the triangular bead-spring microswimmer and its dependence on the sizes of the beads as well as on the relative bead configurations. The microswimmer is composed of three beads connected by linear springs in an isosceles triangular arrangement. The bead at the apex of the isosceles triangle is taken to be of arbitrary size, while the other two beads are of equal and fixed size. This arrangement of the beads and springs undergoes autonomous propulsion thanks to the time-dependent active forces which act along the connecting springs. For small active force amplitudes we obtain an explicit expression for the average velocity of the microswimmer as a function of the shape of the isosceles triangle and the size of the central bead. This enables us to identify the conditions on the shape configuration and the relative bead sizes that yield the fastest motion. We find that the magnitude as well as the direction of motion critically depend on these parameters. In the limit where the central bead is large enough, the swimming direction becomes insensitive to the shape of the microswimmer. This limit is appropriate for modeling Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, an alga which moves with the help of its two flagella. Finally, we estimate the efficiency of the microswimmer and identify the model parameters that produce efficient swimming. These findings will help us understand the nature of biological swimming mechanisms and aid in the designing and tuning of rapid and efficient microswimmers capable of moving along arbitrary paths.
