1. Investigation of the SHS mechanisms of titanium nitride by in situ time-resolved diffraction and infrared thermography

Abstract: The self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) or combustion synthesis is a promising process to produce advanced ceramics due to the high purity of the elaborated materials and the very short synthesis time. Titanium nitride has been synthesised from pressed titanium powder and a nitrogen gas flow under a 0.1 MPa pressure. The influence of the addition of a TiN diluent was investigated. For the first time, SHS reaction mechanisms were determined from in situ time-resolved X-ray diffraction (TRXRD) experiments using the synchrotron radiation. These experiments were coupled with infrared thermography to study the propagation of the combustion reaction. It appeared that the initiation of the combustion reaction is due to the α-Ti to β-Ti phase transformation. A single δ-TiN phase was then produced from pressed titanium powder. The addition of a TiN diluent resulted in the synthesis of a multiphase material with the presence of the α-Ti, Ti 2 N and TiN phases. The combustion reaction propagates in a surface mode at a velocity ranging from 6.4 to 7.4 mm/s.

Abstract: This work presents original investigations carried out to improve the activated self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) process in the Fe–Si system: different ignition modes are tested (volume heating as opposed to a local ignition source), and the use of additive is considered in order to enhance the SHS type reactivity in the Fe–Si system. When 20 wt.% of KNO 3 is added to the reactive mixture, the fast (>20 mm s −1 ), stable and self-sustaining combustion reaction produces a very fine FeSi + α-FeSi 2 structure. Infrared thermography (IR) as well as post-mortem analysis (SEM, EDXS, XRD) was used to understand the mechanism behind the chemical activation process when KNO 3 was used as an additive.

Abstract: The microstructure evolution of Cu-nanostructured powders versus the ball milling conditions was investigated by whole peak profile powder pattern modeling method. This method allows defining in some approach the characteristics of as-milled Cu powder microstructure in terms of crystallite size, type and density of dislocations and twin faults density. It is shown that the change of microstructure characteristics of as-milled Cu powder versus the ball milling conditions (under constant time of the ball milling) depend on only some energy parameters of the milling, for example, average size of crystallite is uniquely defined by energy of the shock, whereas the portion of edge and screw components of dislocation structures depend on a ratio between normal and tangential components of shock.

Abstract: International audience; The determination of local strain fields at the surface of materials is of major importance for understanding their reactivity. In the present paper, lithography is used to fabricate grid points at the microscale and to map strain gradients within grains and between grains. This method was applied to duplex stainless steels which exhibit heterogeneous strain distributions under straining conditions. The influence of various parameters (the specimen microstructure, the density of slip bands, the number of systems activated and the grid geometry) on the strain value was discussed.

Abstract: International audience; Laser heating and ablation of materials with low absorption and thermal conductivity (paint and cement) were under experimental and theoretical investigations. The experiments were made with a high repetition rate Q-switched Nd:YAG laser (10 kHz, 90 ns pulse duration and l = 532 nm). High repetition rate laser heating resulted in pulse per pulse heat accumulation. A theoretical model of laser heating was developed and demonstrated a good agreement between the experimental temperatures measured with the infrared pyrometer and the calculated ones. With the fixed wavelength and laser pulse duration, the ablation threshold fluence of paint was found to depend on the repetition rate and the number of applied pulses. With a high repetition rate, the threshold fluence decreased significantly when the number of applied pulses was increasing. The experimentally obtained thresholds were well described by the developed theoretical model. Some specific features of paint heating and ablation with high repetition rate lasers are discussed.

Abstract: Obtaining the red color was a technical and economic challenge for the French faience manufactories in the 18th and 19th centuries. The tendency of the red hematite to turn into drab brown during the firing process explains the difficulty in obtaining this color. Red decorations in shards coming from the four production centers of faience manufacturing during this period—Rouen (northwest), Nevers (central), Thiviers (southwest) and Argonne (northeast)—have been studied by means of micro-Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). Among them, Thiviers appears to be the leader thanks to a particular reddish sandstone called ‘Gres de Thiviers’ (GT) available in the region. This material is composed of α-quartz grains cemented by goethite (α-FeOOH), leading to red hematite during the firing process. Raman spectra revealed that GT was also used by the Nevers manufactories in the middle of the 19th century instead of other methods used in the middle of the 18th century based on the mixture of Naples yellow with iron oxides. Manufactories in the north of France at Rouen and Argonne did not employ GT, but Naples yellow together with iron oxides or other pigments as ‘bol d'Armenie’. Copyright © 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract: The efficiency (mm3/(J pulse)) of laser ablation of paint was investigated with nanosecond pulsed Nd:YAG lasers (λ = 532 nm) as a function of the following laser beam parameters: pulse repetition rate (1–10,000 Hz), laser fluence (0.1–5 J/cm2) and pulse duration (5 ns and 100 ns). In our study, the best ablation efficiency (η ≅ 0.3 mm3/J) was obtained with the highest repetition rate (10 kHz) at the fluence F = 1.5 J/cm2. This ablation efficiency can be associated with heat accumulation at high repetition rate, which leads to the ablation threshold decrease. Despite the low thermal diffusivity and the low optical absorption of the paint (thermal confinement regime), the ablation threshold fluence was found to depend on the pulse duration. At high laser fluence, the ablation efficiency was lower for 5 ns pulse duration than for the one of 100 ns. This difference in efficiency is probably due to a high absorption of the laser beam by the ejected matter or the plasma at high laser intensity. Accumulation of particles at high repetition rate laser ablation and surface shielding was studied by high speed imaging.

Abstract: International audience; Alumina scales constitute excellent protective barriers when they form on alumina-forming steels. If they keep tightly adherent to the underlying substrate, they isolate it from the surrounding aggressive atmosphere at high temperature. The protectiveness of the alumina scale is highly dependant upon its growth mechanism. The nucleation and transformation of transient alumina (mainly g-Al2O3 and y-Al2O3) is known to play an important role on alumina scale formation. It is therefore fundamental to characterise these transient alumina especially during the early stages of the oxidation process. The morphology of the transient alumina was observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), their crystallographic phases determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). X-ray photoelectron spectrometry (XPS) analyses were performed on reference samples and then compared to the alloys oxidised 5 and 30 minutes at 850, 900 and 950°C

Abstract: The effect of grain size on the dielectric properties of Ba0.6Sr0.4TiO3 (BST) ceramics is investigated. Attrition milling is chosen to obtain nanometre particle size from micrometre particle size powders. Fine grained ceramics are obtained by hot uniaxial pressing (HUP). Additionally, the present study is focused on the effect of the nature of milling balls on loss tangent and permittivity. For that, three kinds of balls are tested: calcia, yttria or ceria stabilised zirconia balls. The properties of these samples are evaluated in the range of MHz. The balls induce an involuntary doping of powders which modifies the dielectric properties, especially the Curie temperature and loss tangent.

Abstract: International audience; The relation between chromia scale spallation during oxidation or cooling down of ferritic stainless steels is generally discussed in terms of mechanical stresses induced by volume changes or differential thermal expansion. In the present paper, growth and thermal stress measurements in scales grown on different ferritic steel grades have shown that the main stress accumulation occurs during isothermal scale growth and that thermal stresses are of minor importance. However, when spallation occurs, it is always during cooling down. Steel-oxide interface undulation seems to play a major role at this stage, thus relating spallation to the metal mechanical properties, thickness and surface preparation. A major influence on spallation of the minor stabilizing elements of the steels was observed which could not be related to any difference in stress state. Therefore, an original inverted blister test was developed to derive quantitative values of the metal-oxide adhesion energy. These values clearly confirmed that this parameter was influenced by scale thickness and by minor additions, titanium greatly increasing adhesion whereas niobium decreased it.

Abstract: International audience; Novel two-dimensional carbon-carbon composites made of carbon nanofibers (CNFs) supported on a carbon preform were functionalized by non thermal plasma treatment (room temperature, atmospheric pressure, humid air), before being used as supports for metallic cobalt nanoparticles. It was shown that the degree of functionalization of the carbon nanofibers depends on the plasma power input, the treatment time and the CNF loading. The size of the cobalt nanoparticles generated after subsequent reduction of the Co-containing plasma treated CNF/C composites under hydrogen flow seems to be independent of the amount of supported cobalt. Changes in surface characteristics were analyzed using thermogravimetric analyses coupled to a mass spectrometer, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses and Raman spectroscopy. Abstract: International audience; A new synthetic pathway for the direct synthesis of water soluble gold nanoparticles (GNPs) already possessing terminal alkene functional groups was developed. This is achieved by using synthesized (1-hydroxy-1-phosphonopent-4-enyl)phosphonic acid (HMBPene), presenting advantages of the well known bisphosphonate coating applied to colloidal gold instead of metal oxides. The proposed protocol allowed an accurate control of the particle size in the 13–20 nm diameter range with a high spherical uniformity, which is a crucial point for these colloids' properties. We have shown that it is possible to synthesize a functionalized nanoplatform in a one-pot one-phase process with a sacrificial molecule as reductant, pH mediator and capping agent.

CIN3 Software; International audience; Many papers deal with the effect of water vapor on the high-temperature corrosion behavior of metallic materials. Experimental procedures are an essential consideration in the study of oxidation in steam, O2-H2O or air-H2O atmospheres, H2-H2O atmospheres, etc. The influence of various laboratory-controlled experimental parameters on the steam oxidation response of materials has been reviewed, and best practice recommendations are proposed in many papers. There are two main ways of enriching a gas in water vapor. The first consists in bubbling a gas (H2, air, N2, Ar, etc.) through a water bath held at a fixed temperature (thermostat). For example, synthetic air bubbled through a water bath held at 46°C gives a 10% H2O enrichment of the gas. The SiMap laboratory in Grenoble uses two successive water baths to obtain the desired water vapor content. The first bath is used to pre-enrich the gas by bubbling at a temperature below the target temperature. The second bath is heated to the temperature required for water vapor enrichment. The LICB team in Dijon and the LVVEEM team at Le Puy en Velay use a slightly different setup that involves a cooling tower: the gas is made to flow through a distilled water bath held at 70-80°C, and the H2O fraction is controlled and adjusted by passing the gas through a cooling tower heated to the correct temperature. Hayashi et al. use the same process to perform water vapor experiments. The experimental setup presented in Figure 1 possesses three water sources, which makes it very convenient for conducting long-term experiments as it is possible to switch from the first to the second or third bath, as many times as needed. Successive experiments in H216O, H218O and D2O can also be carried out by placing each isotope in a separate bath.

Abstract: The development of advanced instrumentation for in-pile experiments in Material Testing Reactor constitutes a main goal for the improvement of the nuclear fuel behavior knowledge. In the framework of high burn-up fuel experiments under transient operating conditions, an innovative sensor based on acoustic method was developed by CEA and IES (Southern Electronic Institute).This sensor is used to determine the on-line composition of the gases located in fuel rodlet free volume and thus, allows calculating the molar fractions of fission gases and helium. The main principle of the composition determination by acoustic method consists in measuring the time of flight of an acoustic signal emitted and reflected in a specific cavity. A piezoelectric transducer, driven by a pulse generator, generates the acoustic wave in the cavity. The piezoelectric transducer is a PZT ceramic disk, mainly consisting of lead, zirconium and titanium. This acoustic method was tested with success during a first experiment called REMORA 3, and the results were used to differentiate helium and fission gas release kinetics under transient operating conditions. However, during the irradiation test, acoustic signal degradation was observed, mainly due to irradiation effect but also due to the increasing of the gas temperature. Despite this acoustic signal degradation, the time of flight measurements were carried out with good accuracy throughout the test, thanks to the development of a more efficient signal processing. After experiment, neutronic calculations were performed in order to determine neutron fluence at the level of the piezoelectric transducer. In order to have a better understanding of the acoustic sensor behavior under irradiation, Post Irradiation Examination program was done on piezoelectric transducer and on acoustic coupling material too. These examinations were also realized on a non-irradiated acoustic sensor built in the same conditions and with the same materials and the same design as the one which has been irradiated. The comparison between both results highlights microstructural evolutions due to irradiation effect. Firstly, metallographic examinations of polished low-angle cross-section of the sensor were performed. The use of low-angle cross-section sample gives geometrical characteristics (macroscopic swelling measurements for instance) with a very good accuracy. This preparation induces a significant magnification of observed region of interest, especially for the acoustic coupling material whose thickness is very small. Optical microscopy on irradiated and non-irradiated samples provides microstructural information about a possible evolution during irradiation test. Secondly, X-ray diffraction measurements on both samples give information about crystalline phase behavior under irradiation. In addition with the important feedback acquired during the in-pile test, these examinations allow us to improve the acoustic sensor design for the next experiments.

Abstract: International audience; The surface properties of nickel and copper alloys exposed to simulated French Callovo-Oxfordien ground-water (aerated and CO2-saturated solutions) have been evaluated from electrochemical impedance spectroscopy in conjunction with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The kinetic reactions and physical properties of the layers grown on the alloy's surfaces, change versus the Ni content in the alloys and the presence of CO2 in the solution. Nickel alloys retain favourable passive properties in such environments, whereas oxide products on copper alloys are insufficiently protective when formed in the absence of dissolved oxygen in the electrolyte. A maximum addition of 30 wt% of copper in nickel alloys provides good results with respect to corrosion resistance. Electrochemical measurements allow discriminating behaviour between oxide layers maintained by diffusion phenomena through layer and passive films which are maintained from migration phenomena. Abstract: Context. Asteroid modeling efforts in the last decade resulted in a comprehensive dataset of almost 400 convex shape models and their rotation states. These efforts already provided deep insight into physical properties of main-belt asteroids or large collisional families. Going into finer detail (e.g., smaller collisional families, asteroids with sizes 20 km) requires knowledge of physical parameters of more objects. Aims. We aim to increase the number of asteroid shape models and rotation states. Such results provide important input for further studies, such as analysis of asteroid physical properties in different populations, including smaller collisional families, thermophysical modeling, and scaling shape models by disk-resolved images, or stellar occultation data. This provides bulk density estimates in combination with known masses, but also constrains theoretical collisional and evolutional models of the solar system. Methods. We use all available disk-integrated optical data (i.e., classical dense-in-time photometry obtained from public databases and through a large collaboration network as well as sparse-in-time individual measurements from a few sky surveys) as input for the convex inversion method, and derive 3D shape models of asteroids together with their rotation periods and orientations of rotation axes. The key ingredient is the support of more that 100 observers who submit their optical data to publicly available databases. Results. We present updated shape models for 36 asteroids, for which mass estimates are currently available in the literature, or for which masses will most likely be determined from their gravitational influence on smaller bodies whose orbital deflections will be observed by the ESA Gaia astrometric mission. Moreover, we also present new shape model determinations for 250 asteroids, including 13 Hungarias and three near-Earth asteroids. Abstract: International audience; The stacking parameters, lattice constants, and bond lengths of solvent-free dilithium squarate (Li(2)C(4)O(4)) crystals were investigated using density functional theory with and without dispersion corrections. The shortcoming of the GGA (PBE) calculation with respect to the dispersive forces appears in the form of an overestimation of the unit cell volume up to 5.8%. The original Grimme method for dispersion corrections has been tested together with modified versions of this scheme by changing the damping function. One of the modified dispersion-corrected DFT schemes, related to a rescaling of van der Waals radii, provides significant improvements for the description of intermolecular interactions in Li(2)C(4)O(4) crystals: the predicted unit cell volume lies then within 0.9% from experimental data. We applied this optimised approach to the screening of hypothetical framework structures for the delithiated (LiC(4)O(4)) and lithiated (Li(3)C(4)O(4)) phases, i.e. oxidized and reduced squarate forms. Their relative energies have been analysed in terms of dispersion and electrostatic contributions. The most stable phases among the hypothetical models for a given lithiation rate were selected in order to calculate the corresponding average voltages (either upon lithiation or delithiation of Li(2)C(4)O(4)). A first step towards energy partitioning in view of interpretating crystal phases relative stability in link with (de)-intercalation processes has been performed through the explicit evaluation of electrostatic components of lattice energy from atomic charges gained with the Atoms in Molecules (AIM) method.

Abstract: International audience; Two family outbreaks of botulism (a total of nine cases) were identified in south-east and northern France in early September 2011. The source of infection was considered to be a ground green olive paste. Botulinum type A toxin was identified in seven cases and in the incriminated olive paste. Incorrect sterilisation techniques were observed at the artisanal producer’s workshop. These episodes highlight the potential public health threat of Clostridium botulinum linked to inadequate sterilisation of food products.

Abstract: International audience; Binary 50Ni–50Ti mixture was prepared by mechanical alloying from elemental powders. After 48 h of milling, the nanocrystalline B2-NiTi powder was produced. Then, this as-milled powder was deposited by cold spraying in order to produce a target which can be used to create thin films by magnetron sputtering technique. The objective is to improve the electrical characterizations of the NiTi/SiO2/Si M.O.S structures. Themorphology evolution of the powder particles, the phase identification and the alloying evolution process as function of milling time were studied using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. In addition, the target was also characterized using X-ray diffraction, Scanning electron microscopy, and microhardness measurements. The milling of powders leads to the formation of disorderednanocrystalline B2-NiTi with a crystallite size of about 12 nm and a microstrain of level 2.10%, after 48 h of milling. The microstructure, the composition and grain size of the milled powders for 24 h and 48 h characterized by TEM are heterogeneous. The as-deposited intermetallic NiTi can be retained in the coating with a lattice parameter of 0.3 nm, crystallite size of 14 nm, microstrain and high microhardness of 2% and 694Hv0.25, respectively.

Abstract: In the present paper, juvenile and adult shells of the green ormer Haliotis tuberculata ('Oreille de Saint-Pierre') were perforated in a zone close to the shell edge and the shell repair process was followed at two levels: (1) by observing the histology of the calcifying mantle in the repair zone and (2) by analyzing with SEM the microstructure of the shell repair zone. Histological data clearly show the presence of calcium carbonate granules into the connective tissues, but not in the epithelial cells. This suggests that calcium carbonate granules are synthesized by sub-epithelial cells and actively transported through the epithelium to the repair zone, via a process which may be similar to that described by Mount et al. [Mount, A.S., Wheeler, A.P., Paradkar, R.P., Snider, D., 2004. Hemocyte-mediated shell mineralization in the eastern oyster. Science 304, 297-300]. Furthermore, SEM observations show that the repair zone exhibits different stratified microstructures (spherulitic, thin prismatic, blocklike, sub-nacreous, nacreous, foliated-like), some of which are not continuous (i.e. lenticular) along the repair zone. This suggests a complex secreting regime of the calcifying mantle and an elaborate geometry of the epithelium involved in shell repair. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This paper introduces the PROTAL(R) process, which combines an in situ pulsed laser cleaning with thermal spraying techniques. This laser surface preparation avoids some drawbacks of the traditional degreasing and sand-blasting stages prior to thermal spraying, which is especially meaningful for ductile and notch-sensitive materials. Abstract: Cementation is a widely applied technique for the conditioning of low- and intermediate-level radioactive wastes. In particular, the use of cement is an attractive procedure to immobilize evaporator concentrates from aqueous effluents treatment. This study is devoted to bring information on the influence of concentrates mixing solution on the dimensional variations under wet curing of simulated solidified waste forms with high ionic strength. In this study, the salinity of the evaporator concentrates was simulated by adding sodium or potassium nitrates. The length changes were measured, with displacement gauges consisting in linear variable differential transducers. Mortars prepared with solutions of KNO3 or NaNO3 exhibited expansion which increased with the nitrate concentration in the mixing solution, whatever the associated cations. The measured swelling was shown to be governed by a concentration effect which involved diffusion and osmosis: diffusion of the ions of the pore solution into the less concentrated curing solution, and water uptake by the material due to the osmotic pressure gradient between the pore and curing solutions.

Abstract: The long term behaviour of cement based materials is strongly influenced by the internal chemistry and the paste microstructure. The industrial byproduct additives like pulverised fly ash (PFA) or blastfurnace slag (BFS) used in blended cement influence together the paste microstructures and the chemistry. A blended cement, designated CEM V in the European standard, containing PFA and BFS has been studied in order to understand processes involved during hydration. Several techniques as Xrays diffraction (XRD), solid-state NMR, thermogravimetry analysis (TGA) have been used to characterize the hydration of the PFA, BFS and the components (C2S, C3S) of the clinker. Such types of characterization have been performed both on old (10 years) and recent samples (from 28 days to 2 years old). Microstructure characterisations, mainly by mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP), have been also done. Interpretations of all these characterizations allow to build a sketch for the hydration of CEM V cement.

Abstract: A new numerical method is introduced for calculating the polarizability of an arbitrary dielectric object with position dependent complex permittivity. Three separate numerical approaches are provided to calculate the dipole moment of a nanoparticle embedded in a dielectric matrix in the presence of an applied electric field. Numerical tests confirm the accuracy of this method when applied to several cases for which an exact solution is available. This method is especially well suited for the calculation of absolute Raman scattering intensities due to acoustic phonons in metallic and dielectric nanoparticles embedded in transparent matrices., Comment: Submitted to the Journal of Raman Spectroscopy

Abstract: NiAl intermetallide and NiAl–ZrO 2 composites were prepared from pressed elemental powders by SHS in adynamic vacuum. The effect of diluent properties (such as conductivity and grain size) on the parameters of the SHS reaction has been investigated by time-resolved X-ray diffraction (TRXRD). By decreasing the reactivity of the green mixture, these nonreactive additives not only slow down the velocity of combustion front propagation but also give rise to local melting of the product. Synchrotron radiation was also used to elucidate the reaction mechanism. It has been found that the combustion synthesis of NiAl is triggered by aluminum melting and proceeds via the formation of two transient intermetallic phases, NiAl 3 and Ni 2 Al 3 . In the final product, only the NiAl phase has been detected.

Abstract: Temperature photoluminescence (PL) in the sub-ambient range has been developed as a tool for characterizing photocatalytic materials. The use of well-characterized TiO2 nanoparticles with calibrated particle sizes allowed to face the temperature dependent PL results with the photocatalytic activity and several important physico-chemical parameters. In the relaxation of the photoexcited electron/hole pairs, the transfer towards surface sites is in competition with radiative and non-radiative recombinations. Temperature dependent PL appears thus to be a very sensitive technique to study the efficiency of the electron or the hole trapping at the surface of titania nanoparticles where they take part to the oxidation/reduction reactions. The PL shows a peak around 610 nm with a width of about 130 nm. The quenching of this emission is measured as a function of the temperature, from 9.9 up to 230 K. The kinetics of this phenomenon can be described by fitting the temperature dependent PL results with a double activation law while a simple activation model fails. It suggests that two ways are involved in the trapping process of the carriers, with activation energies in the range of a few meV and a few tenths of meV, respectively. The relationship between the PL parameters linked to the two different energetic processes associated to two energy barriers (activation energy and transition rate), the powder characteristics and the photoactivity is discussed.

Abstract: International audience; In this paper, we are concerned with the charging and electrokinetic behavior of colloidal particles exhibiting a high surface charge in the alkaline pH range. For such particles, a theoretical approach has been developed in the framework of the primitive model. The charging and electrokinetic behavior of the particles are determined by the use of a Monte Carlo simulation in a grand canonical ensemble and compared with those obtained through the mean field theory. One of the most common colloidal particles has been chosen to test our theoretical approach. That is calcium silicate hydrate (C−S−H) which is the main component of hydrated cement and is known for being responsible for cement cohesion partly due to its unusually high surface charge density. Various experimental techniques have been used to determine its surface charge and electrokinetic potential. The experimental and simulated results are in excellent agreement over a wide range of electrostatic coupling, from a weakly charged surface in contact with a reservoir containing monovalent ions to a highly charged one in contact with a reservoir with divalent ions. The electrophoretic measurements show a charge reversal of the C−S−H particles at high pH and/or high calcium concentration in excellent agreement with simulation predictions. Finally, both simulation and experimental results clearly demonstrate that the mean field theory fails not only quantitatively but also qualitatively to describe a C−S−H dispersion under realistic conditions.

Abstract: Publié suite au congrès ECASIA: 11th European Conference on Applications of Surface and Interface Analysis, 25-30 September 2005, Vienna, Austria; International audience; During laser cleaning of aluminium in ambient atmosphere, modifications of the metal surface can be induced by transient thermal effects. This work aims to characterize the modification of the aluminium oxide layer on pure aluminium for a wide range of power per area using a Q-switched Nd :YAG (1064 nm) laser with two pulse durations, 10 and 180 ns. Experiments were carried out with single laser shots in ambient air at fluences (e.g. energy per area) below the ablation regime. For 10-ns pulses with fluences between 0.7 and 1.7 J/cm2, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS) revealed thermal oxidation with an increase of the oxide-layer thickness for 0.7–1.3 J/cm2. Above a threshold at about 1.3 J/cm2 the oxide thickness decreased. The Mixing Roughness Model was used for the SIMS depth profile. For 180-ns pulses with fluences between 2.1 and 4.3 J/cm2, and therefore much lower power per area than with the 10 ns pulses, XPS showed a variation of surface composition with a different behaviour for 2.1–2.9 J/cm2 compared to 3.1–4.3 J/cm2. However, no significant changes of the average thickness of the oxide layer were found.

Abstract: We study the formation of high energy tails in a one-dimensional kinetic model for granular gases, the so-called Inelastic Maxwell Model. We introduce a time- discretized version of the stochastic process, and show that continuous time implies larger fluctuations of the particles energies. This is due to a statistical relation between the number of inelastic collisions undergone by a particle and its average energy. Abstract: A closed macroscopic equation for the motion of the two-dimensional adiabatic piston is derived from standard hydrodynamics. It predicts a damped oscillatory motion of the piston towards a final rest position, which depends on the initial state. In the limit of large piston mass, the solution of this equation is in quantitative agreement with the results obtained from both hard disk molecular dynamics and hydrodynamics. The explicit forms of the basic characteristics of the piston's dynamics, such as the period of oscillations and the relaxation time, are derived. The limitations of the theory's validity, in terms of the main system parameters, are established.

Abstract: International audience; The microstructure evolution of Cu nanostructured powders at different conditions of the ball milling is investigated by the x-ray diffraction analysis. The characteristics of as-milled Cu-powder microstructure in terms of crystallite sizes, type, and density of dislocations as well as twin-faults' density are determined by the whole peak-profiles' modelling of powder x-ray diffraction pattern. By comparing of both microstructure characteristics of Cu powder and the ball milling parameters, the dominant factors of ball milling, which affect on the concentration of twin faults, type, and density of dislocations as well as the size of crystallites, are revealed.

Abstract: Adsorption of tetrahydrothiophene (THT) on NaX, CaX, AgX, and H-USY was studied by dynamic adsorption method and FTIR spectroscopy. The stoichiometric adsorption capacities are not very different for all materials, which is indicative of a complete micropore filling. In contrast, the overall rate constant of adsorption, determined from fitting the breakthrough curves with Bohart–Adams equation, is two times greater for H-USY than for type X zeolites. For NaX, CaX and H-USY, heating under N 2 flow at 300 °C allows to restore completely their initial adsorption capacities. In the case of AgX the same treatment results in a twofold lose of capacity accompanied by a collapse of the zeolite structure as evidenced by XRD. The nature of interaction between THT molecules and zeolites was characterized by FTIR spectroscopy. Only a weak interaction through hydrogen bonding was observed for THT on H-USY leading to an almost complete desorption at 100 °C. For NaX and CaX adsorbed molecules are gradually eliminated when heated to 300 °C while completely different pattern was observed for THT adsorbed on AgX on which the amount of the adsorbate remains nearly constant between 25 and 200 °C, but rapidly decreases on further heating. Such a behavior is indicative of much stronger interaction between THT molecules and Ag + cations in agreement with the data on the regeneration of the adsorbents.

Abstract: This paper aims to characterize a bulk dense FeAl (47 at.%) alloy synthesized and consolidated by one-step current-activated pressure-assisted processing of nanocrystalline elemental powders. The end-product was analyzed using a combination of scanning (SEM) and transmission electron microscopies (TEM), electron back-scattering diffraction (EBSD) as well as electron probe microanalysis (EPMA). Special attention was paid to verify the grain size (32–89 nm) previously determined by X-ray diffraction peak profile analysis. It has been found that this material displays equiaxed grains (0.8–4 μm in size) and contains limited structural defects like subgrains and dislocations. The EPMA result reveals that a variability in Al content (36–47 at.%) is present within the synthesized FeAl phase. Thus, the local variation of lattice parameters resulting from this heterogeneity accounts for the broadening of X-ray diffraction peaks instead of the common idea that the broadening is due to the small grain size. The formation mechanisms of the structure and the composition heterogeneity are also discussed and related to the combustion reaction process.

Abstract: International audience; The electrochemical behaviour of ferritic and austenitic phases in duplex stainless steel (UNS S32304) and the modifications induced by straining during sliding were studied by potentiodynamic polarisation curves determined at the microscale in a 1MNaCl (pH 3) solution, using an electrochemical microcell. The mechanical properties and stress state of each phase were determined by microhardness and X-ray microdiffraction measurements, before and after straining. The results show that sliding generates elastic straining of the ferrite and plastic deformation of the austenite. The electrochemical behaviour of these phases is dramatically altered, inducing a reduction of the corrosion resistance and of the passivation properties.

Abstract: International audience; Angle-resolved X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (ARXPS) experiments were performed to study in situ the reaction at the film–substrate interface during metal organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) growth of TiO2 thin films deposited on the silicon substrate. The in-depth distribution of chemical species was determined using several ARXPS thickness calculation models considering either single or bilayer systems. By the comparison of two single-layermodels, the presence of a second layer composed of silicon oxidewas evidenced. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) observations confirmed the stratification of the film in two layers, as well as the perfect wetting of the surface by TiO2, irrespective of the model used. The contribution of the ARXPS bilayer model was demonstrated by the agreement of the values of film thickness obtained by both techniques. Nevertheless, the correlation between each layer's thickness was only possible by taking into account chemical species mixing. Indeed, the presence of oxidised silicon in the upper TiO2 layer, in addition to that of the SiOx interlayer, has to be considered to interpret ARXPS results in a correct way.

Abstract: Titanium oxynitride thin films have been deposited by low-pressure metalorganic chemical vapour deposition and reactive sputtering. The growth temperature for chemical vapour-deposited films and water vapour partial pressure for sputter-deposited films have been used to modulate the chemical composition. Both series have been analysed using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) in order to describe the structure of the materials using a factorial analysis approach. Titanium and metalloid concentrations have also been determined and compared to an elemental analysis performed using Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy and nuclear reaction analysis. The two deposition methods led to the synthesis of TiOxNy coatings exhibiting various oxygen and nitrogen concentrations from metallic TiN to insulating TiO2 compounds. Taking into account the Ti 2p signals of XPS spectra and implementing the factorial analysis, both series exhibited the coexistence of two phases, namely Ti(N,O) and TiO2. Quantification of each phase has been calculated and discussed as a function of the deposition conditions.

Abstract: In situ synchrotron time-resolved X-ray diffraction experiments coupled with an infrared imaging camera have been used to reveal the combustion wave structure during the production of MoSi2 by Mechanically Activated Self-propagating High-temperature Synthesis (MASHS). The fast combustion front exhibits a form described as an ‘equilibrium structure’ where the chemical reaction is the sole major driving force. In the MASHS process, oxide-free interfaces between Mo and Si nanocrystallites enhance the reaction Mo+2Si→MoSi2. Exhaustive time-resolved investigations show a possible solid-state process in the first second of the reaction within the combustion front. If preheating is added, the reaction rate is increased, whereas, the presence of α- and β-MoSi2 phases, produced during the ball milling (i.e. mechanical alloying), cause fluctuations in combustion rate. Therefore, an increasing of the mechanical pre-treatment duration leads to an unstable wave by acting directly on the thermal and matter transfer rates.
