Abstract: The Virtual Atomic and Molecular Data Centre (VAMDC, http://www.vamdc.eu) is a European Union funded collaboration between groups involved in the generation, evaluation, and use of atomic and molecular data. VAMDC aims to build a secure, documented, flexible and interoperable e-science environment-based interface to existing atomic and molecular data. The project will cover establishing the core consortium, the development and deployment of the infrastructure and the development of interfaces to the existing atomic and molecular databases. It will also provide a forum for training potential users and dissemination of expertise worldwide. This review describes the scope of the VAMDC project; it provides a survey of the atomic and molecular data sets that will be included plus a discussion of how they will be integrated. Some applications of these data are also discussed.

Abstract: The updated 2009 edition of the spectroscopic database GEISA (Gestion et Etude des Informations Spectroscopiques Atmosphériques; Management and Study of Atmospheric Spectroscopic Information) is described in this paper. GEISA is a computer-accessible system comprising three independent sub-databases devoted, respectively, to: line parameters, infrared and ultraviolet/visible absorption cross-sections, microphysical and optical properties of atmospheric aerosols. In this edition, 50 molecules are involved in the line parameters sub-database, including 111 isotopologues, for a total of 3,807,997 entries, in the spectral range from 10-6 to 35,877.031cm-1.The successful performances of the new generation of hyperspectral sounders depend ultimately on the accuracy to which the spectroscopic parameters of the optically active atmospheric gases are known, since they constitute an essential input to the forward radiative transfer models that are used to interpret their observations. Currently, GEISA is involved in activities related to the assessment of the capabilities of IASI (Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer; http://smsc.cnes.fr/IASI/index.htm) on board the METOP European satellite through the GEISA/IASI database derived from GEISA. Since the Metop-A (http://www.eumetsat.int) launch (19 October 2006), GEISA is the reference spectroscopic database for the validation of the level-1 IASI data. Also, GEISA is involved in planetary research, i.e. modeling of Titan's atmosphere, in the comparison with observations performed by Voyager, or by ground-based telescopes, and by the instruments on board the Cassini-Huygens mission.GEISA, continuously developed and maintained at LMD (Laboratoire de Météorologie Dynamique, France) since 1976, is implemented on the IPSL/CNRS (France) "Ether" Products and Services Centre WEB site (http://ether.ipsl.jussieu.fr), where all archived spectroscopic data can be handled through general and user friendly associated management software facilities. Abstract: International audience; The ENVISAT validation programme for the atmospheric instruments MIPAS, SCIAMACHY and GOMOS is based on a number of balloon-bone, aircraft and ground-based correlative measurements. In particular the activities of validation scientists were coordinated by ESA within the ENVISAT Stratospheric Aircraft and Balloon Campaign of ESABC. As part of a series of similar papers on other species [this issue] and in parallel to the contribution of the individual validation teams, the present paper provides a synthesis of comparisons performed between MIPAS CH4 and N2O profiles produced by the current ESA operational software (Instrument Processing Facility version 4.61 or IPF v4.61) and correlative measurements obtained from balloon and aircraft experiments as well as from satellite sensors or from ground-based instruments. The MIPAS-E CH4 values show a positive bias in the lower stratosphere of about 10%. In case of N2O no systematic deviation with respect to the validation experiments could be identified. The individual used MIPAS data version 4.61 still exhibits some unphysical oscillations in individual CH4 and N2O profiles caused by the processing algorithm (with almost no regularization). Taking these problems into account, the MIPAS CH4 and N2O profiles are behaving as expected from the internal error estimation of IPF v4.61.

Abstract: The SPIRALE and SWIR balloon-borne instruments were launched in the Arctic polar region (near Kiruna, Sweden, 67.9° N–21.1° E) during summer on 7 and 24 August 2009 and on 14 August 2009, respectively. The SPIRALE instrument performed in situ measurements of several trace gases including CO and O3 at altitudes between 9 and 34 km, with very high vertical resolution (∼ 5 m). The SWIR-balloon instrument measured total and partial column of several species including CO. The CO stratospheric profile from SPIRALE for 7 August 2009 shows some specific structures with large concentrations in the low levels (potential temperatures between 320 and 380 K, i.e. 10–14 km height). These structures are not present in the CO vertical profile of SPIRALE for 24 August 2009, for which the volume mixing ratios are typical from polar latitudes (∼ 30 ppb). CO total columns retrieved from the IASI-MetOp satellite sounder for the three dates of flights are used to understand this CO variability. SPIRALE and SWIR CO partial columns between 9 and 34 km are compared, allowing us to confirm that the enhancement of CO is localised in the stratosphere. The measurements are also investigated in terms of CO:O3 correlations and using several modelling approaches (trajectory calculations, potential vorticity fields, results of chemistry transport model) in order to characterize the origin of the air masses sampled. The emission sources are qualified in terms of source type (fires, urban pollution) using NH3 and CO measurements from IASI-MetOp and fires detection from MODIS on board the TERRA/AQUA satellite. The results give strong evidence that the unusual abundance of CO on 7 August is due to surface pollution plumes from East Asia and North America transporting to the upper troposphere and then entering the lower stratosphere by isentropic advection. This study strengthens evidence that the composition of low polar stratosphere in summer may be affected by anthropogenic surface emissions through long-range transport.

Abstract: The Virtual Atomic and Molecular Data Centre (VAMDC) Consortium is a worldwide consortium which federates atomic and molecular databases through an e-science infrastructure and an organisation to support this activity. About 90% of the inter-connected databases handle data that are used for the interpretation of astronomical spectra and for modelling in many fields of astrophysics. Recently the VAMDC Consortium has connected databases from the radiation damage and the plasma communities, as well as promoting the publication of data from Indian institutes. This paper describes how the VAMDC Consortium is organised for the optimal distribution of atomic and molecular data for scientific research. It is noted that the VAMDC Consortium strongly advocates that authors of research papers using data cite the original experimental and theoretical papers as well as the relevant databases.

Abstract: The characterization and the precise measurements of atmospheric pollutant’s concentration are essential to improve the understanding and modeling of urban air pollution processes. The QualAir platform at the Université Pierre et Marie Curie (UPMC) is an experimental research platform dedicated to urban air quality and pollution studies. As one of the major instruments, the ground-based QualAir Fourier transform spectrometer (FTS) provides information on the air composition of a megacity like Paris, France. Operating in solar infrared absorption, it enables the monitoring of several important pollutants involved in tropospheric chemistry and atmospheric transport around the Ile de France region. Results on nitrous oxide (N2O), methane (CH4), and carbon monoxide (CO) will be presented in this paper, as well as the CO measurements comparison with satellite and in situ measurements showing the capabilities and strengths of this ground-based FTS with the other instruments of the QualAir platform.

Abstract: International audience; Absolute intensities of about 120 lines of the 12C2H2 molecule are reported for the ν4 − ν5 band between 65 and 192 cm−1, with an average accuracy of 5%. Vibrational transition dipole moment squared values and empirical Herman-Wallis coefficients are obtained allowing modelling the rotational dependence of the transition dipole moment squared. Special care is taken to accurately determine an apparatus function for the Bruker IFS 125-HR coupled to the synchrotron SOLEIL far infrared AILES beamline in order to minimize its effects on the line parameter retrieval.

Abstract: Although the global methane (CH4) concentration has more than doubled since pre-industrial times, local emission sources are still poorly identified and quantified. Instruments onboard satellites can improve our knowledge about the methane global distribution owing to their very good spatial coverage. The IASI (Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer) instrument launched on the European MetOp-A platform is a Fourier transform spectrometer which measures the thermal infrared radiation emitted by the Earth and its atmosphere. In this paper, we present the first global distribution of methane total columns (mostly sensitive to the middle troposphere) from the IASI spectra using the methane ν4 absorption band. The retrieval spectral range was set in order to minimize possible spectroscopic issues. Results are discussed in terms of error budget and vertical sensitivity. In addition, we study the gain of information on surface methane concentrations provided by using the ν3 band, which is partly covered by IASI on the short-wave end of the spectra (extending to 2760 cm−1), where solar reflection contributes significantly.

Abstract: From the IR induced spectrum between 4000 and 5000 cm −1 of solid normal hydrogen doped with H 2 O, CH 3 F, CH 4 , and double doped with O 2 , the nuclear spin conversion of ortho -H 2 molecules has been analyzed at 4.2 K. The self-conversion rate is determined to be K sc = 2.8(3) × 10 −4 min −1 , with no implication of O 2 atmospheric impurity. Within the framework of an ortho -H 2 diffusion dominated process, the O 2 catalyzed conversion rate is deduced to be K cc = 0.17(3) min −1 . We have shown that CH 3 F induces ortho -H 2 conversion at the same rate as O 2 , according to a diffusion controlled process, via intra-cluster conversion.

Abstract: This paper presents a first statistical validation of tropospheric ozone products derived from measurements of the IASI satellite instrument. Since the end of 2006, IASI (Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer) aboard the polar orbiter Metop-A measures infrared spectra of the Earth's atmosphere in nadir geometry. This validation covers the northern mid-latitudes and the period from July 2007 to August 2008. Retrieval results from four different sources are presented: three are from scientific products (LATMOS, LISA, LPMAA) and the fourth one is the pre-operational product distributed by EUMETSAT (version 4.2). The different products are derived from different algorithms with different approaches. The difference and their implications for the retrieved products are discussed. In order to evaluate the quality and the performance of each product, comparisons with the vertical ozone concentration profiles measured by balloon sondes are performed and lead to estimates of the systematic and random errors in the IASI ozone products (profiles and partial columns). A first comparison is performed on the given profiles; a second comparison takes into account the altitude dependent sensitivity of the retrievals. Tropospheric columnar amounts are compared to the sonde for a lower tropospheric column (surface to about 6 km) and a "total" tropospheric column (surface to about 11 km). On average both tropospheric columns have small biases for the scientific products, less than 2 Dobson Units (DU) for the lower troposphere and less than 1 DU for the total troposphere. The comparison of the still pre-operational EUMETSAT columns shows higher mean differences of about 5 DU.

Abstract: We have studied the time evolution of IR spectra of solid normal H 2 doped with O 2 at 4.2 K. We have determined ortho concentration from IR integrated intensity ratio between the ortho double transitions at 4736 cm −1 and the para contribution to the double transitions at 4505 cm −1 , supposing that an average experimental strength of these transitions can be defined. Within this frame, we propose an empirical relation between the ortho concentration and the experimental intensity ratio between the 4736 and the 4505 cm −1 absorptions.

Abstract: We report the nitrogen-induced shifting coefficients of 37 water vapour rovibrational transitions in the 1845–2140 cm−1 spectral region. The measurements were made with a Fourier transform spectrometer at Paris University in the 258–330 K temperature range at a spectral resolution of 0.005 cm−1 for lines with low state rotational quantum number up to 14. The measured exponents of the temperature dependence of the width exhibit a large range of values from 0 to 2.5. Theoretical calculations are based on impact theory modified by introducing additional parameters to extend the use of empirical data. The model parameters are determined by fitting the broadening and shifting coefficients to experimental data. The calculated line shift coefficients as well as the temperature exponents for the line shift agree satisfactorily with measured values.

Abstract: International audience; We measured the temperature dependence of the nitrogen broadening, narrowing and line-mixing coefficients of four lines of the P9 manifold in the ν3 band of 12CH4 for atmospheric purposes. The data were collected using our tunable diode laser (TDL) spectrometer with active wavenumber control coupled to a newly developed cold Herriott cell with a path length of 5.37 m and a temperature uniformity of better than 0.01 K along the cell. We recorded and analyzed spectra recorded at sample temperatures between 90 K and room temperature. We have investigated the influence of our new results in the inversion model used to retrieve methane profiles from atmospheric spectra; our new results make it possible to retrieve significantly more precise methane profiles. The atmospheric spectra we utilized were obtained by several of us with a balloon-born Fourier Transform infrared experiment in a limb configuration. Differences up to 7% on the retrieved volume mixing ratio were found compared to an inversion model using only HITRAN04 spectroscopic parameters.

Abstract: Depopulation rates of rotational levels in the v 3 = 2 vibrational state of 12 CH 4 are investigated by a pump-probe technique. Methane molecules are excited into selected rotational levels by tuning the pump laser to 2 ν 3 lines. The time evolution in population of the excited level after the pumping pulse is monitored by tuning the probe laser to a (3 ν 3 ← 2 ν 3 ) line corresponding to a transition with the excited rotational level as the lower level. Measurements were performed from room temperature down to 100 K in pure CH 4 and in CH 4 –N 2 mixtures. The rotational relaxation rate coefficients are given for the J = 1, A 2 , J = 1, E , J = 1, F 2 and J = 0, F 2 levels. The results are compared with the available data on line broadening coefficients. The temperature dependence of the data on N 2 -broadening is particularly well reproduced by the power law deduced from the results on rotational relaxation.

Abstract: The rate of the gas-phase N((4)S) + C2N(X(2)Πi) reaction has been measured in a continuous supersonic flow reactor down to 54 K through the relative-rate method using the N((4)S) + OH(X(2)Π) → H((2)S) + NO(X(2)Π) reaction as a reference. The microwave discharge technique was employed to produce high concentrations of atomic nitrogen. Pulsed laser photolysis of precursor molecules Cl3C2N and H2O2 at 212 nm in situ led to C2N and OH radical formation, respectively. The rate constant is shown to be approximately independent of temperature, in contrast to previous studies of atom-radical reactions involving atomic nitrogen. While the reaction rate is faster than previously estimated, astrochemical simulations indicate that this reaction is probably only a minor source of CN radicals in dense interstellar clouds.

Abstract: International audience; Observations of comet C/1995O1 Hale-Bopp during the spring of 1997 led to the discovery of a neutral sodium tail whose origin is still not clearly understood. Here, we propose an interpretation for the origin of this sodium tail, which is based upon chemical grounds. Starting from Na+ trapped chemically during the condensation of refractory material in the protosolar nebula to its incorporation in the building blocks of comets and its transfer from refractory to volatile phases in the nucleus due to aqueous alteration, we follow the chemical path of sodium until its transformation into a neutral atom when released from the sublimating cometary ice. We propose that two Na reservoirs should coexist in a comet: one coming from the refractory dust, the other one from the icy matrix. Their relative importance would depend on the extent of the zone where liquid water formed within the nucleus and the time during which water remained liquid, thus favoring the Na+ exchange between rocks and ice. These two key parameters would in turn strongly depend on the thermal history of the comet (amounts of radiogenic nuclides, orbital history, etc.). If our model is correct, the detection of Na originating from water ice would be a testimonial of the past aqueous alteration of the comet or its parent body.

Abstract: We present a complete study on four methane lines for two atmospheric micro-windows (in the ν 2 + ν 4 absorption band) used for the determination of atmospheric methane concentrations with ground-based Fourier transform spectrometers. Thanks to our tunable diode laser (TDL) spectrometer with active wavenumber control and step-by-step recording mode we have improved the accuracy on intensity, broadening, narrowing, and pressure shift parameters. To make our results directly useable in atmospheric models which usually assume a Voigt line shape, we have parameterised an effective-broadening parameter γ Voigt ( P ) for each line and each gas mixture (CH 4 –N 2 and CH 4 –O 2 ). When this parameterisation is used to fit a “true” line profile, the same concentration as with more sophisticated models is retrieved using a consistent set of spectroscopic parameters in both approaches.

Abstract: The present work is a comparative study of the adsorption modes of acetonitrile and of the conjugated molecule acrylonitrile on Si(0 0 1)-2×1 at room temperature, using synchrotron radiation photoemission spectroscopy (PES) and near edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy. Both molecules chemisorb on the surface. Besides dissociated species revealed by PES, NEXAFS spectroscopy shows that a large fraction of acetonitrile molecules are di-σ bonded to the surface, e.g. after a [2+2]-like cycloaddition of the CN group with a silicon dimer. In the case of acrylonitrile, PES indicates that most of the molecules chemisorb non-dissociatively. Nevertheless multiple bonding geometries must be envisaged to account for the NEXAFS spectra: the major reaction products has a flat lying geometry, the two outer atoms of the molecule skeleton being bonded to two silicon atoms. Other geometries, which correspond to the reaction of the CC bond with a silicon dimer or to the formation of a dative bond through the nitrogen lone pair with one silicon atom have also to be envisaged.

Abstract: Measurements of the mole fraction of the CO2 and its isotopes were performed in Paris during the MEGAPOLI winter campaign (January–February 2010). Radiocarbon (14CO2) measurements were used to identify the relative contributions of 77% CO2 from fossil fuel consumption (CO2ff from liquid and gas combustion) and 23% from biospheric CO2 (CO2 from the use of biofuels and from human and plant respiration: CO2bio). These percentages correspond to average mole fractions of 26.4 ppm and 8.2 ppm for CO2ff and CO2bio, respectively. The 13CO2 analysis indicated that gas and liquid fuel contributed 70% and 30%, respectively, of the CO2 emission from fossil fuel use. Continuous measurements of CO and NOx and the ratios CO/CO2ff and NOx/CO2ff derived from radiocarbon measurements during four days make it possible to estimate the fossil fuel CO2 contribution over the entire campaign. The ratios CO/CO2ff and NOx/CO2ff are functions of air mass origin and exhibited daily ranges of 7.9 to 14.5 ppb ppm−1 and 1.1 to 4.3 ppb ppm−1, respectively. These ratios are consistent with different emission inventories given the uncertainties of the different approaches. By using both tracers to derive the fossil fuel CO2, we observed similar diurnal cycles with two maxima during rush hour traffic.

Abstract: This manuscript is focusing on some research activities between laser instrumentation and physics of atomic clocks. The main goal is to develop new atomic clocks using laser spectroscopy on weakly allowed and completely forbidden optical transitions. Starting from a theoretical study of the atomic structure of ceasium atom, I focus then on the theoretical and experimental studies of nuclear spin states in a magnetic field by laser spectroscopy of a weakly allowed atomic transition in two electron atoms. I will also present the possibility to create a "magic" static field which can eliminate the linear and the quadratic Zeeman shift by dressing the nuclear spin with a radiofrequency field. The manuscript will then focus on the possibility to probe the completely forbidden transition of the bosonic isotope by making atoms trapped into a state superposition transparent to the laser light. In order to satisfy a rapid atomic preparation of the state superposition while eliminating any light shift affecting the clock transition, we propose to use a two-photon pulsed spectroscopy which is extended to the more recent Hyper-EIT/Raman spectroscopy.; Ce mémoire porte sur mes travaux de recherche à l'interface entre la physique atomique des horloges et l'instrumentation laser. Ils ont pour objectif de réaliser de nouveaux spectromètres à très haute résolution en fréquence en réalisant la spectroscopie laser de transitions atomiques faiblement permises par couplage dipolaire électrique ou complètement interdites à des fréquences de référence de plusieurs centaines de térahertz. Après avoir brièvement rappelé la structure hyperﬁne et magnétique de la transition d'horloge de l'état fondamental du césium, atome retenu depuis 1967 pour la déﬁnition de la seconde, je poursuivrai avec une étude détaillée, théorique et expérimentale, des états magnétiques d'un spin nucléaire par spectroscopie laser de la transition d'horloge optique entre les états 1S0 et 3P0 d'une espèce fermionique possédant une conﬁguration électronique (ns,nl) avec deux électrons de valence comme le strontium, l'ytterbium ou le mercure. Nous discuterons également l'existence d'un champ magnétique statique "magique" capable de réduire fortement le déplacement linéaire et quadratique Zeeman de la transition d'horloge grâce à l'habillage du spin nucléaire à l'aide d'un champ de radiofréquence. Le manuscrit se focalise ensuite sur la possibilité de réaliser l'interrogation de la transition interdite en préparant l'espèce bosonique, de spin nucléaire nul, dans une superposition d'états quantiques transparente à la lumière laser. Abstract: International audience; High quality double-position-boundaries free 3C-SiC epilayers have been successfully grown on on-axis (0001) 4H-SiC by chemical vapor deposition at optimized conditions as observed with optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The effect of the growth parameters, including temperature, C/Si ratio, ramp-up condition, Si/H-2 ratio, N-2 addition and pressure, on the quality of the grown layers is investigated. Different techniques, including microscopic and spectroscopic techniques, are used to characterize the epilayers. High resolution X-ray diffraction shows 2 theta-omega curve with full width at half maximum of only 16 arcsec for the (111) reflection detected from a 35 mu m thick 3C-SiC layer, showing the good structural quality of the layer. Reciprocal space maps confirm the absence of double-position-boundaries in a large depth of the layers. Low temperature photoluminescence measurement shows clear near-bandgap emission with sharp and single peaks, which further verifies the high quality of the epilayers. Abstract: Besides their strong contribution to weather forecast improvement through data assimilation, thermal infrared sounders onboard polar-orbiting platforms are now playing a key role for monitoring atmospheric composition changes. The Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer (IASI) instrument developed by the French space agency (CNES) and launched by EUMETSAT onboard the Metop satellite series is providing essential inputs for weather forecasting and pollution/climate monitoring owing to its smart combination of large horizontal swath, good spectral resolution and high radiometric performance. EUMETSAT is currently preparing the next polar-orbiting program (EPS-SG) with the Metop-SG satellite series that should be launched around 2020. In this framework, CNES is studying the concept of a new instrument, the IASI-New Generation (IASI-NG), characterized by an improvement of both spectral and radiometric characteristics as compared to IASI, with three objectives: (i) continuity of the IASI/Metop series; (ii) improvement of vertical resolution; and (iii) improvement of the accuracy and detection threshold for atmospheric and surface components. In this paper, we show that an improvement of spectral resolution and radiometric noise fulfil these objectives by leading to (i) a better vertical coverage in the lower part of the troposphere, thanks to the increase in spectral resolution; and (ii) an increase in the accuracy of the retrieval of several thermodynamic, climate and chemistry variables, thanks to the improved signal-to-noise ratio as well as less interference between the signatures of the absorbing species in the measured radiances. The detection limit of several atmospheric species is also improved. Abstract: Remote sensing of the Earth's atmosphere requires accurate knowledge of spectroscopic line parameters for the molecules investigated. Knowledge of the temperature dependence of these parameters is also essential if agreement, at the noise level, between calculated and experimental data is to be achieved. The authors recently published results of nitrogen broadening measurements in the v3 band of 12CH4 using the 5.37 m long absorption path length all-copper Herriott cell. The temperature dependent line parameters determined in the laboratory were applied to fit a portion of the atmospheric spectrum recorded with a balloon-borne remote sensing FTIR instrument, called the Limb Profile Monitor of the Atmosphere, and operating in absorption against the sun. Since the authors had a relatively complete series of data for the P(9) transition in the v3 band of 12CH4, the A2 1 as well as the F2 1, F1 1 and A1 1 lines recorded at different pressures and at four temperatures between 300 and 90 K, we reanalyzed the data to derive pressure shift information at different temperatures. The temperatures for which data were collected and analyzed are 298, 140 and 90K. The high precision pressure shift data obtained here over a large range of temperature demonstrate the ability of our experimental arrangement to address specific questions on a given spectral window like in the balloon experiment or in a satellite project, for example.

Abstract: The 5pπD″ − X absorption lines of H2 have been reinvestigated using synchrotron radiation with a resolution of 0.001 nm, in an experiment that also yields the absolute absorption intensity for each observed transition. New assignments have been made which extend the manifold of known levels up to the H(n = 4) + H(1s) dissociation threshold. The observations are interpreted in the framework of Multichannel Quantum Defect Theory (MQDT), implemented here in a pure first principles approach based on the best available quantum chemical clamped-nuclei potential energy curves of Wolniewicz and collaborators [1] , [2] . The approach provides theoretical values for the transition energies, intensities, natural widths and quantum yields. Very good agreement is found in general between experiment and theory (to within ≈1–2 cm−1 for the transition energies). An exception concerns the 5pπ, v = 2, N = 2 positive total parity state for which the ionization width is calculated by 40% too large.

Abstract: International audience; The state of the art analyses of high-resolution ozone spectra and a critical discussion of line parameters updated since the previous review by Rinsland et al. [J Quant Spectrosc Radiat Transfer 2003;82:207–18] are presented. We focus on recent works revisiting improved measurements and analyses of Fourier transform spectra below 5600 cm−1 and review Cavity Ring-Down Spectroscopy measurements and analyses in the 5850– 7920 cm−1 spectral region which have been performed for 16O3 and all 18O enriched ozone isotopologues. Various issues related to resonance perturbations due to dark states are discussed as well as the issues concerning the accuracy of the experimental parameters, the data modelling and the data reduction. Comparisons of vibration levels determined from spectra analyses with predictions from the molecular potential functions are given. The procedures of empirical corrections for calculated line lists are described and the “intricate” question of absolute intensity determination is overviewed. Also, a review of deficiencies, challenge for improvements, and related works in progress are reported.

Abstract: International audience; Radio-frequency quantum engineering of spins is based on the dressing by a nonresonant electromagnetic field. Radio-frequency dressing occurs also for the motion of particles, electrons, or ultracold atoms, within a periodic spatial potential. The dressing, producing a renormalization and also a freeze of the system energy, is described by different approaches: dressed atom, magnetic resonance semiclassical treatment, and continued-fraction solution of the Schrödinger equation. A comparison between these solutions points out that the semiclassical treatment, to be denoted as the S solution, represents the most convenient tool to evaluate the tunneling renormalization of ultracold atoms.

Abstract: Accurate determination of absolute absorption cross sections for molecules of atmospheric interest is crucial for retrieving molecular concentrations from remote sensing measurements. The value of the absolute absorption cross section of ozone at 253.65 nm currently recommended as a reference for ozone concentration measurements has 2 % accuracy and presents possible discrepancies with regard to more recent studies. Therefore, we have designed a UV photometer operating at 253.65 nm in order to obtain absorption cross sections with accuracy better than 1 %. The photometer that we constructed during the thesis was tested on styrene, which is an aromatic volatile organic compound (VOC). VOCs as well as ozone are tropospheric pollutants with strong absorptions in the UV. The measurement of the absorption cross section of styrene is not only an ideal performance test; it also provides an important improvement over the previous value that suffers from an uncertainty in the several 10 % range. The strong absorptions of styrene and ozone require measurements to be performed at low pressures (, La détermination de la section efficace d'absorption de composés atmosphériques est indispensable pour leurs mesures de concentration. Plus les valeurs de sections efficaces sont exactes, meilleure est la détermination des concentrations atmosphériques. À l'heure actuelle, la valeur de la section efficace d'absorption de l'ozone à 253,65 nm servant de standard pour la mesure de concentration de l'ozone est entachée d'une erreur de 2% et est controversée. Pour cette raison, nous avons développée un photomètre permettant d'obtenir des sections efficaces d'absorption avec une très bonne exactitude à 253,65 nm. Le but était d'atteindre une précision inférieure à 1 %. Le photomètre réalisé a été testé sur le styrène, un composé organique volatil (COV) aromatique. Les COVs comme l'ozone sont des polluants de la troposphère qui absorbent fortement dans l'UV. Outre son intérêt de molécule test, le styrène comme de nombreux COVs, a une section efficace d'absorption dans l'UV connue avec une mauvaise précision. La forte absorbance du styrène nous a obligé à travailler en basse pression (en dessous de 1 Torr). Dans ce domaine de pression, il apparaît une non-linéarité dans la mesure de pression que nous avons corrigée en mesurant la transpiration thermique du styrène. Nous avons donc obtenu la première mesure de transpiration thermique d'une molécule aromatique. Grâce à une estimation précise des erreurs et des corrections faites, nous avons montré que le photomètre réalisé atteignait bien une précision inférieure au %. Nous avons obtenu une section efficace absolue d'absorption du styrène de 1,521E−17 cm^2 avec une incertitude de 0,6 % pour un intervalle de confiance de 95 %.

Abstract: A Zeeman-insensitive optical clock atomic transition is engineered when nuclear spins are dressed by a non resonant radio-frequency field. For fermionic species as $^{87}$Sr, $^{171}$Yb, and $^{199}$Hg, particular ratios between the radiofrequency driving amplitude and frequency lead to "magic" magnetic values where a net cancelation of the Zeeman clock shift and a complete reduction of first order magnetic variations are produced within a relative uncertainty below the $10^{-18}$ level. Abstract: Dust grains in the interstellar medium are known to serve as the first chemical laboratory where the rich inventory of interstellar molecules are synthesized. Here we present a study of the formation of hydroxylamine--NH(2)OH--via the non-energetic route NO + H (D) on crystalline H(2)O and amorphous silicate under conditions relevant to interstellar dense clouds. Formation of nitrous oxide (N(2)O) and water (H(2)O, D(2)O) is also observed and the reaction network is discussed. Hydroxylamine and water results are detected in temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) experiments, while N(2)O is detected by both reflection-absorption IR spectroscopy and TPD techniques. The solid state NO + H reaction channel proves to be a very efficient pathway to NH(2)OH formation in space and may be a potential starting point for prebiotic species in dark interstellar clouds. The present findings are an important step forward in understanding the inclusion of interstellar nitrogen into a non-volatile aminated species since NH(2)OH provides a solid state nitrogen reservoir along the whole evolutionary process of interstellar ices from dark clouds to planetary systems.

Much of the formaldehyde (H2CO) is formed from the hydrogenation of CO on interstellar dust grains, and is released in the gas phase in hot core regions. Radio-astronomical observations in these regions are directly related to its desorption from grains. Aims. We study experimentally the thermal desorption of H2CO from bare silicate surfaces, from water ice surfaces and from bulk water ice in order to model its desorption from interstellar grains. Methods. Temperature-programmed desorption experiments, monitored by mass spectrometry, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy are performed in the laboratory to determine the thermal desorption energies in: (i.) the multilayer regime where H2CO is bound to other H2CO molecules; (ii.) the submonolayer regime where H2CO is bound on top of a water ice surface; (iii.) the mixed submonolayer regime where H2CO is bound to a silicate surface; and (iv.) the multilayer regime in water ice, where H2CO is embedded within a H2O matrix. Results. In the submonolayer regime, we find the zeroth-order desorption kinetic parameters nu(0) = 10(28) mol cm(-2) s(-1) and E = 31.0 +/- 0.9 kJmol(-1) for desorption from an olivine surface. The zeroth-order desorption kinetic parameters are nu(0) = 10(28) mol cm(-2) s(-1) and E = 27.1 +/- 0.5 kJmol(-1) for desorption from a water ice surface in the submonolayer regime. In a H2CO:H2O mixture, the desorption is in competition with the H2CO + H2O reaction, which produces polyoxymethylene, the polymer of H2CO. This polymerization reaction prevents the volcano desorption and co-desorption from happening. Conclusions. H2CO is only desorbed from interstellar ices via a dominant sub-monolayer desorption process (E = 27.1 +/- 0.5 kJmol-1). The H2CO which has not desorbed during this sub-monolayer desorption polymerises upon reaction with H2O, and does not desorb as H2CO at higher temperature.

Abstract: In a growing world with more than 7 billion inhabitants and big emerging countries such as China, Brazil and India, emissions of anthropogenic pollutants are increasing continuously. Monitoring and control of atmospheric pollutants in megacities have become a major challenge for scientists and public health authorities in environmental research area. The QualAir platform at University Pierre et Marie Curie (UPMC), is an innovating experimental research platform dedicated to survey urban atmospheric pollution and air quality. As one of the major instruments of the QualAir platform, the ground-based Fourier transform spectrometer (QualAir FTS, IFS 125HR model) analyses the composition of the urban atmosphere of Paris, which is the third European megacity. The continuous monitoring of atmospheric pollutants is essential to improve the understanding of urban air pollution processes. Associated with a sun-tracker, the QualAir remote sensing FTS operates in solar infrared absorption and enables to monitor many trace gases, and to follow up their variability in the Ile-de-France region. A description of the QualAir FTS will be given. Concentrations of atmospheric pollutants are retrieved by the radiative transfer model PROFFIT. Located in the centre of Paris, the QualAir FTS can provide new and complementary urban measurements as compared to unpolluted ground-based stations of existing networks (NDACC and TCCON). Ground-based remote sensing measurements from QualAir FTS will be compared to ground in-situ and satellite data like IASI-MetOp (Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer, a high resolution, nadir viewing Fourier Transform Spectrometer working in the thermal infrared range extending from 645 to 2760 cm-1 (with no gaps) and flying on a polar orbit on the METOP-A platform since 5 years). Seasonal variability and trend of carbon monoxide over Paris will be presented.

Abstract: International audience; Carbon monoxide is after H 2 the most abundant molecule identified in the interstellar medium (ISM), and is used as a major tracer for the gas phase physical conditions. Accreted at the surface of water-rich icy grains, CO is considered as the starting point of a complex organic – presumably prebiotic – chemistry. Non-thermal desorption processes, and especially photodesorption by UV photons, are seen as the main cause that drives the gas-to-ice CO balance in the colder parts of the ISM. The process is known to be efficient and 10 wavelength-dependent, but, the underlying mechanism and the physical-chemical parameters governing the photodesorption are still largely unknown. Using monochromatized photons from a synchrotron beamline, we reveal that the molecular mechanism responsible for CO photoejection is an indirect, (sub)surface-located process. The local environment of the molecules plays a key role in the photodesorption efficiency, and is quenched by at least an order of magnitude for CO interacting with a water ice surface.

Abstract: GOSAT (Greenhouse Gases Observing SATellite) is a satellite dedicated to the study of greenhouses gases. It carries an infrared Fourier transform spectrometer (Thermal And Near infrared Sensor for carbon Observation-Fourier Transform Spectrometer or TANSO-FTS), which acquires spectra in 4 bands, located in the Near-Infrared (NIR), ShortWave Infrared (SWIR) and Thermal Infrared (TIR). An imager (Cloud and Aerosol Imager or TANSO-CAI) enables to gain information on clouds and aerosols, and this information is used to improve the quality of CO2 and CH4 retrievals. IASI (Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer) designed by CNES for Eumetsat is carried by the MetOp-A satellite. It is used for operational meteorology and is also interesting for greenhouse gases as well as for atmospheric chemistry and climate. We looked for close spatial and temporal coincidences with six TCCON sites where high resolution FTIR measurements are performed routinely. Cloud-free and spatially homogeneous fields of view (IFOVs) were selected using CAI images. The TCCON retrieved VMR profiles have been used as reference and compared with those we retrieved from coincident measurements of GOSAT and IASI. We used the [1240;1320] cm-1 window for CH4, and the [980;1100] cm-1 window for O3 retrieval. Finally, we will highlight the potential to further improve the results using the synergy between measurements in the TIR and the SWIR spectral domains.

Abstract: International audience; Four years after launch, IASI has delivered significant advances in remote sensing capability for numerical weather prediction and atmospheric composition monitoring and promises an excellent dataset for climate studies. The Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer (IASI) forms the main infrared sounding component of EUMETSAT's Metop-A satellite (Klaes et al., 2007), which was launched in October 2006. This article presents the results of the first four years of the operational IASI mission. The performance of the instrument is shown to be exceptional in terms of calibration and stability the quality of the data has allowed the rapid use of the observations in operational numerical weather prediction (NWP) and the development of new products for atmospheric chemistry and climate studies, some of which were unexpected before launch. The assimilation of IASI observations in NWP models provides significant forecast impact; in most cases the impact has been shown to be at least as large as for any previous instrument. In atmospheric chemistry, global distributions of gases such as ozone and carbon monoxide can be produced in near-real time, and short-lived species such as ammonia or methanol can be mapped, allowing identification of new sources. The data have also shown the ability to track the location and chemistry of gaseous plumes and particles associated with volcanic eruptions and fires, providing valuable data for air quality monitoring and aircraft safety. IASI also contributes to the establishment of robust long term data records of several essential climate variables. The suite of products being developed from IASI continues to expand as the data are investigated, and further impacts are expected from increased use of the data in NWP and climate studies in the coming years. The instrument has set a high standard for future operational hyperspectral infrared sounders, and demonstrated that such instruments have a vital role in the global observing system.

Abstract: International audience; Virtual Atomic and Molecular Data Center (VAMDC) is an European FP7 project with aims to build a flexible and interoperable e-science environment based interface to the existing Atomic and Molecular data. The VAMDC will be built upon the expertise of existing Atomic and Molecular databases, data producers and service providers with the specific aim of creating an infrastructure that is easily tuned to the requirements of a wide variety of users in academic, governmental, industrial or public communities. In VAMDC will enter also STARK-B database, containing Stark broadening parameters for a large number of lines, obtained by the semiclassical perturbation method during more than 30 years of collaboration of authors of this work (MSD and SSB) and their co-workers. In this contribution we will review the VAMDC project, STARK-B database and discuss the benefits of both for the corresponding data users.

Abstract: International audience; The SPIRALE (french acronym for infrared absorption spectroscopy by tunable laser diodes) and SWIR-balloon (shortwave infrared Fourier transform spectrometer in nadir-looking) balloon-borne instruments have been launched in the Arctic polar region (Kiruna, Sweden, 67.9°N - 21.1°E) during summer on 7 and 24 August 2009 and on 14 August 2009, respectively. SPIRALE instrument performed in situ measurements of several trace gases including CO and O3 between 10 and 34 km height, with very high vertical resolution (~5 m) and SWIR-balloon instrument measured total column of several species including CO. The balloon CO measurements for the 3 dates are compared with the satellite data from IASI instrument and show a good agreement. However, the stratospheric profile from SPIRALE on 7 August 2009 presents specific structures associated with a tropical intrusion in the low levels (320-380K potential temperature corresponding to 10-14 km altitude) with respect to the 24 august measurements, which is confirmed by the 15-20% increase of the total column of IASI. Their interpretation is made with the help of results from several modelling tools (MIMOSA, FLEXTRA, REPROBUS and GIRAFE) and from satellite data (MODIS on board TERRA/AQUA, IASI instrument on board MetOp-A and GEOS). The results suggest the impact of East Asia urban pollution on the chemistry of polar stratosphere in summer. The SPIRALE O3 vertical profile was also used in correlation with CO to calculate the proportion of recent air in polar stratosphere. SPIRALE and SWIR-balloon flights were part of the balloon campaign conducted by CNES within the frame of the StraPolÉté project funded by French agencies ANR, CNES and IPEV, contributing to the International Polar Year.

Abstract: Exact and asymptotic lineshape expressions are derived from the semi-classical density matrix representation describing a set of closed three-level atomic or molecular states including decoherences, relaxation rates and light-shifts. An accurate analysis of the exact steady-state Dark Resonance profile describing the Autler-Townes doublet, the Electromagnetically Induced Transparency or Coherent Population Trapping resonance and the Fano-Feshbach lineshape, leads to the linewidth expression of the two-photon Raman transition and frequency-shifts associated to the clock transition. From an adiabatic analysis of the dynamical Optical Bloch Equations in the weak field limit, a pumping time required to efficiently trap a large number of atoms into a coherent superposition of long-lived states is established. For a highly asymmetrical configuration with different decay channels, a strong two-photon resonance based on a lower states population inversion is established when the driving continuous-wave laser fields are greatly unbalanced. When time separated resonant two-photon pulses are applied in the adiabatic pulsed regime for atomic or molecular clock engineering, where the first pulse is long enough to reach a coherent steady-state preparation and the second pulse is very short to avoid repumping into a new dark state, Dark Resonance fringes mixing continuous-wave lineshape properties and coherent Ramsey oscillations are created. Those fringes allow interrogation schemes bypassing the power broadening effect. Frequency-shifts affecting the central clock fringe computed from asymptotic profiles and related to Raman decoherence process, exhibit non-linear shapes with the three-level observable used for quantum measurement.
