Abstract: International audience; Thanks to their high ionic conductivity and appropriate mechanical properties, sulfide-based solid electrolytes (SSE) are increasingly studied for a use in all-solid-state batteries (ASSBs). Silicon is abundant, non toxic and has a high theoretical capacity, and therefore is a promising active material in ASSBs. We first study the compatibility between two different solid electrolytes with similar ionic conductivity, Li$_{10}$SnP$_2$S$_{12}$ (LSnPS) and Li$_6$PS$_5$Cl (LPSCl), and micron-sized silicon based anode. LPSCl appears to be less reactive than LSnPS and it is then used to determine the most appropriate silicon size and shape for efficient cycling. Two silicon materials are compared, micron-sized silicon particles (μSi) and silicon nanowires (SiNWs). Energy Dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) mapping of the composite powders shows a better dispersion of the SiNWs in the LPSCl matrix. Galvanostatic cycling and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) measurements highlight the greater compatibility of SiNWs compared to μSi in ASSBs with a high specific delithiation capacity of 2600 mAh/gSi at the first cycle, while limiting the polarization and maintaining a relatively stable lithiation mechanism during cycling.

Abstract: International audience; Silicide-based materials are among the most promising candidates for a mass manufacturing of thermoelectric devices allowing converting waste heat into electricity in the medium temperature range (250–500 °C), as they are formed from abundant, low cost and non-toxic elements while exhibiting good thermoelectric properties. In order to manage the detrimental mismatch of thermal expansion coefficients between the n and p-type materials constituting the thermoelectric legs, inducing thus thermomechanical stresses, we propose in this paper a new design of modules having a 'half-skeleton' structure. Twenty-two modules consisting of two couples of thermoelectric legs combining n-type magnesium silicide Mg2(Si, Sn) and p-type higher manganese silicide have been fabricated according to this design, the thermoelectric materials being manufactured by kilograms. It is clearly shown that all the interfaces present in the modules are free from cracks, oxygen, and diffusion. The remarkable repeatability of the measured thermoelectric performance attests the robustness of our manufacturing process. An average power output of 0.37 W has been achieved, i.e. a power density of 0.95 W/cm2, for a temperature difference of 400 °C (hot side temperature of 450 °C), placing our modules at the state of the art level while using simple production tools and materials mass production. Comparing this performance to finite elements modelling, the performance could be even enhanced. Long term stability tests at a given temperature and under cycling conditions in different working atmospheres are underway.

Abstract: International audience; The aim of this study is to decipher the respective influences of geodynamic and climate disturbances at the Jurassic/Cretaceous boundary on sedimentary facies and carbonate diagenesis in a stable intracratonic basin using isotopic geochemistry and subsidence quantification. Fourteen lithofacies were deposited in a (1) carbonate platform and (2) a delta plain environment. Climate change from cool and wet to warm and semi-arid conditions during the early Tithonian influenced the syn-sedimentary dolomitization process within the carbonate platform during the mid-Tithonian. Architecture and facies reconstructions well-constrained the Jurassic-Cretaceous Unconformity (JCU), which was an important local structural episode marked by (1) an 80 m uplift in the eastern Paris Basin and by (2) the formation of a NW–SE low wavelength 15 km-wide and 30 km-long flexure. This first tectonic event tended to maintain brine ponds and supratidal marsh environments in the platform during the late Tithonian and early Berriasian, forming Purbeckian facies and associated dolomitic facies. A major depositional change occurred between the early and late Berriasian from shallow carbonate platform environments to fluviatile-deltaic clastic deposits (Wealden facies). This facies change is underlain by a major unconformity corresponding to the Ryazanian unconformity. It is marked (1) by erosion processes, karstification of the carbonate substrate, and the development of ferruginous weathering products (goethite), followed by (2) incision processes in a fluvial-deltaic environment. This unconformity is consecutive to a 40 m uplift in the eastern Paris Basin. The rifting phase in the Bay of Biscay, in the Pyrenean Zone, and in the Artic-North Atlantic together with the opening of the Ligurian Sea had a major influence on the northern part of France by causing uplifts (120 m from the Tithonian) and flexuring. Geodynamics played a major role in carbonate demise in the Paris Basin leading to exposure and karstification of the carbonate platform. Added to the generalized uplift, western Tethyan cool and humid conditions from the late Berriasian caused terrigenous influx into large-scale marine domains which was detrimental and unfavorable to carbonate growth.

Abstract: Chapter 11: Cell, Stack, and System Modeling and Simulation; International audience; As it plays a key role on the performances and durability of solid oxide cells, the electrode microstructure has to be finely characterized and modelled. In this frame, a plurigaussian random field model and an original sphere packing algorithm have been developed to simulate a large variety of electrode microstructures. The two stochastic geometrical models have been validated on various electrode reconstructions obtained by synchrotron X-ray holotomography including the microstructures of thin functional layers and a thick current collector. Afterwards, semi-analytical microstructural correlations have been proposed and validated on a large dataset of representative synthetic microstructures. These equations allow establishing the links between the microstructural properties controlling the performances (Triple Phase Boundary lengths density and specific surface areas) to the ‘basic’ geometric attributes of the electrode (composition, porosity and particle size distribution). These correlations have been used to model the loss of active TPBl due to the Ni agglomeration.

Abstract: International audience; Experimental data on the hydrodynamic behavior of dense and circulating fluidized beds at high temperatures are scarce in the literature. This work deals with the hydrodynamic study of a Fast Internally Circulating Fluidized Bed (FICFB) used for biomass gasification. The first part of this study investigates the influence of the bed temperature (between 20 and 950 °C) and the nature of fluidizing gas (air or steam) on the hydrodynamic parameters of a dense fluidized bed of olivine particles (i.e. minimum fluidization velocity and voidage as well as average voidage). Three olivine batches are used with a mean Sauter diameter of 282, 464 and 689 μm, respectively. Experimental results are compared with different empirical correlations from the literature to evaluate their validity under elevated temperature conditions. Besides, two dimensionless correlations calculating the minimum fluidization velocity and average bed voidage are proposed. The second part of this study focuses on the hydrodynamic behavior of an FICFB operating between 20 and 850 °C. The effect of different process parameters (i.e. bed material nature, air velocity, solids inventory, bed temperature) on the solids circulation flow rate is investigated. It was found that the transport velocity Utr is not affected by the bed temperature and the bed material inventory. It mainly depends on the terminal settling velocity Ut of bed material particles. Besides, key parameters controlling solids flow rate are the combustor gas velocity and the solids inventory. An increase in these parameters leads to a higher circulation flow rate.

Abstract: International audience; In this paper, a physically-based model was adapted to P-type organic thin-film transistors (P-OTFTs) by describing the accumulation charge with a Lambert W (LW) function in order to extract their figures of merit as threshold voltage, low-field mobility and subthreshold slope related to the interface traps density. This continuous and differentiable model, implemented for the first time on OTFTs, allows an accurate evaluation of the output and transfer characteristics, reproducing well the OTFT behaviour below and above the threshold region. Additionally, it was validated for different channel lengths (from 10 to 100 μm), taking into account short-channel effects. This model was also used to extract the parameters of P-OTFTs measured at low temperatures, showing a thermally activated transport in the polymer organic semiconductor (OSC) with an effective width of localized states around 90 meV and a relatively high band-like mobility. We also showed that the evolution of the threshold voltage versus temperature was related to the electrostatic effect of the interface trapped charge. The comparison between classical extraction methods and our LW-function based method validated the application of our model to P-OTFTs parameters extraction, opening a possibility for compact modelling.

Abstract: International audience; The CENDARI infrastructure is a research-supporting platform designed to provide tools for transnational historical research, focusing on two topics: medieval culture and World War I. It exposes to the end users modern Web-based tools relying on a sophisticated infrastructure to collect, enrich, annotate, and search through large document corpora. Supporting researchers in their daily work is a novel concern for infrastructures. We describe how we gathered requirements through multiple methods to understand historians' needs and derive an abstract workflow to support them. We then outline the tools that we have built, tying their technical descriptions to the user requirements. The main tools are the note-taking environment and its faceted search capabilities; the data integration platform including the Data API, supporting semantic enrichment through entity recognition; and the environment supporting the software development processes throughout the project to keep both technical partners and researchers in the loop. The outcomes are technical together with new resources developed and gathered, and the research workflow that has been described and documented.

Abstract: International audience; Solid oxide electrolysis cells (SOEC) are a promising energy conversion technology for the production of green hydrogen via steam electrolysis. However, performance loss remains a bottleneck for large-scale commercialization. Here, we investigate the different types of degradation occurring in a state-of-the-art cell composed of La0.6Sr0.4Co0.2Fe0.8O3-Ce0.8Gd0.2O2 (LSCF-GDC) composite for the oxygen electrode, GDC for the barrier layer, Y0.16Zr0.84O1.92 (8YSZ) for the electrolyte and Ni-YSZ for the fuel electrode. Electrochemical impedance spectra measured before and after operation at 750 °C for 2000 hours at -1 A cm-2 in SOEC mode revealed no significant evolution for the oxygen electrode contribution. To investigate potential degradation of this electrode, we performed multi-modal chemical imaging based on synchrotron X-ray diffraction (µ-XRD) with a resolution at the micrometer-scale. In addition, we monitored the evolution of the chemical composition and chemical environment before and after ageing using laboratory X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). All these analyses revealed a slight evolution of the crystal lattice parameter in the oxygen electrode and the inter-diffusion layer. It was also found that Sr segregation accelerates with ageing. However, more severe ageing conditions and/or longer ageing durations are required in order to observe an effect on the performance.

Abstract: The present paper deals with both the modeling and the dynamic control of a solar hybrid thermochemical reactor designed to produce syngas through the high-temperature steam gasification of biomass. First, a model of the reactor based on the thermodynamic equilibrium is presented. The Cantera toolbox is used. Then, a model-based predictive controller (MPC) is proposed with the aim of maintaining the reactor’s temperature at its nominal value, thus preserving the reactor’s stability. This is completed by adjusting the mirrors’ defocusing factor or burning a part of the biomass to compensate for variations of direct normal irradiance (DNI) round the clock. This controller is compared to a reference controller, which is defined as a combination of a rule-based controller and an adaptive proportional–integral–derivative (PID) controller with optimized gains. The robustness of the MPC controller to forecast errors is also studied by testing different DNI forecasts: perfect forecasts, smart persistence forecasts and image-based forecasts. Because of a high optimization time, the Cantera function is replaced with a 2D interpolation function. The results show that (1) the developed MPC controller outperforms the reference controller, (2) the integration of image-based DNI forecasts produces lower root mean squared error (RMSE) values, and (3) the optimization time is significantly reduced thanks to the proposed interpolation function.

Catalyst layer structure, and especially the water and ionomer distributions, rule the active sites availability for electrochemical reactions, and thus catalyst utilisation, because of their influence on the transport of protons and oxygen. However, the rational design of more efficient electrodes faces the lack of accurate knowledge of its complex nanoporous structure. Specifically, ionomer and water distribution are very difficult to probe with conventional electron microscopy or X-Ray techniques. This work provides quantitative and new information on electrode structure, regarding ionomer and water distributions thanks to an extensive analysis of Small Angle Neutron Scattering (SANS) profiles at different relative humidity (RH) and contrast. A 2 to 3 nm thin ionomer film spreads around the Pt/C catalyst particles while a condensed water layer appears at the catalyst/ionomer interface depending on the type of carbon support.

Abstract: International audience; The laser power bed fusion (L-PBF) additive manufacturing process is commonly used for fabrication of complex metal parts. To ensure the parts’ quality, monitoring of the manufacturing process by an instrument operating continuously during the manufacturing process should be carried out. The existing industrial solutions are limited in the sense that they are restricted to the detection of anomalies within machine state parameters or in the surface layers of the part under construction. Eddy current testing is a promising non-destructive testing method that could be applied for the layer-by-layer inspection of fused material during part fabrication. This inspection enables to follow the defects evaluation not only on the surface of the last fused layer but at the scale of the several fused layers. An eddy current sensor has been developed and adapted to perform measurements in a L-PBF machine during the manufacturing phase (in situ). The performance and potential of the technique in terms of robust integration in the machine and defects evaluation have been studied. The obtained results allowed to evaluate the detection limits according to the width and the height of the defects during the manufacturing of the part. The influence of the powder presence around the fused area has also been studied.

Abstract: International audience; The electrification of vehicles is seen nowadays as a promising way to decarbonize the personal transportation. The assessment of environmental impacts of electric batteries is usually case-specific due to the complex modelling of such systems which present a large variability in designs, in user behavior or in geographic use conditions. A typical example is the battery lifespan which is arbitrarily chosen in most cases, even though it has a decisive influence on lifecycle emissions. Computing the battery lifespan in addition to a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) would enable to highlight new hotspots and new parameters to reduce the environmental impacts of batteries. This paper introduces a new approach, based on a LCA conducted with the open-source software Brightway and built on primary data collected from a complete disassembly of a commercial electric vehicle. An original functional unit has been proposed that better represents the service offered by the battery over its lifetime and a semi-empirical ageing model has been integrated to predict more precisely the battery lifespan depending on design parameters and the use conditions. This innovative methodology is easily parameterized and aims to compare several eco-design strategies.

Abstract: Once introduced in the organism, the interaction of nanoparticles with various biomolecules strongly impacts their fate. Here we show that nanoparticles made of the squalene derivative of gemcitabine (SQGem) interact with lipoproteins (LPs), indirectly enabling the targeting of cancer cells with high LP receptors expression. In vitro and in vivo experiments reveal preeminent affinity of the squalene-gemcitabine bioconjugates towards LP particles with the highest cholesterol content and in silico simulations further display their incorporation into the hydrophobic core of LPs. To the best of our knowledge, the use of squalene to induce drug insertion into LPs for indirect cancer cell targeting is a novel concept in drug delivery. Interestingly, not only SQGem but also other squalene derivatives interact similarly with lipoproteins while such interaction is not observed with liposomes. The conjugation to squalene represents a versatile platform that would enable efficient drug delivery by simply exploiting endogenous lipoproteins., The interaction of nanoparticles with a range of biomolecules once they have been injected within the body can affect their performance. Here, the authors demonstrate that squalene nanomaterials conjugated with anticancer drugs can interact with lipoproteins and can be used to target cancer cells.

This char can have different valorization pathways such as combustion for heat and power, gasification for Syngas production, activation for adsorption applications, or use as a soil amendment. The optimal recovery pathway of the char depends highly on its physical and chemical characteristics. In this study, different chars were prepared from beech wood particles under various pyrolysis operating conditions in an entrained flow reactor (500-1400 degrees C). Their structural, morphological, surface chemistry properties, as well as their chemical compositions, were determined using different analytical techniques, including elementary analysis, Scanning Electronic Microscopy (SEM) coupled with an energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDX), Fourier Transform Infra-Red spectroscopy (FTIR), and Raman Spectroscopy. The biomass char reactivity was evaluated in air using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The yield, chemical composition, surface chemistry, structure, morphology and reactivity of the chars were highly affected by the pyrolysis temperature. In addition, some of these properties related to the char structure and chemical composition were found to be correlated to the char reactivity.

Abstract: In the wake of the growing environmental challenges, hydrogen produced from renewable energy is a good candidate as a substitute for conventional fuels. Indeed, fuel cells can produce electricity thanks to air and hydrogen, and only reject water. The use of this technology is currently emerging in various sectors, such as the maritime industry. However, sea salt aerosols, mostly composed of sodium chloride (NaCl), can damage fuel cells. So far, only a few studies have been dedicated to the impact of NaCl on Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells (PEMFCs) though showing that salty air can induce a significant loss of performance without clearly identifying the underlying physicochemical mechanisms [1][2][3]. Thus, the present experimental work investigates the effects of a salt spray injected into the airflow of single PEMFC cells and stacks at various time scales and contamination levels, with the final aim of identifying the appropriate PEMFC stack protection needed for maritime applications. A dedicated experimental setup generating salt spray in the cathode airflow of a single cell and 5-cells stack has been designed, realized and characterized. The NaCl concentration range used is from 10 mg/m3 to 5 g/m3, to reproduce different types of salty environments. Cells and stacks are operated in constant current density mode. The study is conducted under the conditions of accelerated stress tests. When polluted at high concentrations, single cells degradation becomes significant after only a few minutes of operation (Figure 1) and after a few hours for stacks. Even under low concentrated environments, the single cell voltage decreases faster than the baseline (ie reference voltage with pure water in air stream), leading to PEMFC lifetime shortening. It has been observed that cathode rinsing with nitrogen flow or operation under pure water results in partial cell performance recovery. Moreover, starts-up and shuts-down operated during tests can have a positive or negative influence on cell performance, depending on the break duration. Even when the tests revealed only weak decrease in power, Membrane Electrode Assemblies (MEA) and bipolar plates (BP) post-mortem characterizations highlight degradations. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) studies coupled with Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS) have contributed to the identification of components in MEA and BP. As expected, chlorine reaches not only the cathode gas diffusion layer (GDL) and catalyst layer (CL) but also the anode CL by crossing the membrane [4]. According to the literature, chloride adsorption on Pt surface or Pt dissolution reduces the active area [3] whereas sodium ion contaminates the membrane [1]. Moreover, corrosion products from metallic components have been found. Corrosion marks identified as stainless steel from BP are present in the stack effluents and MEAs. As for single cell, compounds from current collectors (gold, nickel and copper) are present in the GDL and CL. In the near future, for single cell tests, non-metallic current collectors will be used in order to discriminate the effects of the direct degradation of salt spray on MEA and indirect degradation coming from corrosion products of metallic cell components. Overall, the present study reports that NaCl effects on PEMFCs not only depend on the concentration of the NaCl mist but also on the MEA type, current collectors/BP material, and startup/shutdown procedure. In the full paper and oral presentation, tests conducted with less concentrated NaCl droplets will also be presented, with the aim of determining adegradation threshold for single cells. Abstract: Room temperature ionic liquids (ILs) can create a strong accumulation of charges at solid interfaces by forming a very thin and dense electrical double layer (EDL). The structure of this EDL has important consequences in numerous applications involving ILs, for example in supercapacitors, sensors and lubricants, by impacting the interfacial capacitance, the charge carrier density of semiconductors , as well as the frictional properties of the interfaces. We have studied the interfacial structure of a long chain imidazolium-based IL (1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium dicyanamide) on several substrates: mica, silica, silicon and molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2), using atomic force microscopy (AFM) experiments and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. We have observed 3 types of interfacial structures for the same IL, depending on the chemistry of the substrate and the water content, showing that the EDL structure is not an intrinsic property of the IL. We evidenced that at a low water content, neutral and apolar (thus hydrophobic) substrates promote a thin layer structure, where the ions are oriented parallel to the substrate and cations and anions are mixed in each layer. In contrast, a strongly charged (thus hydrophilic) substrate yield an extended structuration into several bilayers, while a heterogeneous layering with loose bilayer regions was observed on an intermediate polar and weakly charged substrate and on an apolar one at a high bulk water content. In the latter case, water contamination favors the formation of bilayer patches by promoting the segregation of the long chain IL into polar and apolar domains.

Abstract: International audience; The need for low cost photovoltaic solutions is becoming more and more important with the ongoing NewSpace revolution. In this context, alternative solar cell technologies are under the spotlight, in particular perovskites which can reach high specific power. In this study, we investigate the electron and proton radiation hardness of multi-cation mixed halide perovskite cells CsxFA1-xPb(IyBr1-y)3. The proton irradiations demonstrate an excellent radiation hardness of the perovskite material but also highlight the degradation of the HTL layer. And the in-situ IV measurements under vacuum following the electron irradiations reveals a self-healing phenomena.; Le besoin de solutions photovoltaïques à faible coût devient de plus en plus important avec la révolution NewSpace en cours. Dans ce contexte, les technologies alternatives de cellules solaires sont sous les feux de la rampe, en particulier les pérovskites qui peuvent atteindre une puissance spécifique élevée. Dans cette étude, nous étudions la dureté aux rayonnements électroniques et protoniques des cellules pérovskites à halogénures mixtes multi-cations CsxFA1-xPb(IyBr1-y)3. Les irradiations aux protons démontrent une excellente résistance aux radiations du matériau pérovskite, mais mettent également en évidence la dégradation de la couche HTL. Les mesures in situ de l'IV sous vide après les irradiations aux électrons révèlent un phénomène d'auto-guérison.

Abstract: International audience; Sodium-ion batteries are a promising technology to respond to the critical availability of lithium. The most suitable material for negative electrode is hard-carbon, which can be obtained from biomass. One of the usual synthesis methods is realised in two pyrolysis steps. In order to avoid a drying step, the first pyrolysis can be replaced by hydrothermal carbonisation. This work investigates the impact of this pretreatment by comparing the two intermediates and the final hard carbon, both on their composition and structure, and the influence on the battery perfomances.

Abstract: Conference of 43rd Annual Review of Progress in Quantitative Nondestructive Evaluation, QNDE 2016 ; Conference Date: 17 July 2016 Through 22 July 2016; Conference Code:126650; International audience; The present work describes a non-destructive testing method aimed at securing high manufacturing quality of the innovative compact heat exchanger developed under the framework of the CEA R&D program dedicated to the Advanced Sodium Technological Reactor for Industrial Demonstration (ASTRID). The heat exchanger assembly procedure currently proposed involves high temperature and high pressure diffusion welding of stainless steel plates. The aim of the non-destructive method presented herein is to characterize the quality of the welds obtained through this assembly process. Based on a low-frequency model developed by Baik and Thompson [1], pulse-echo normal incidence measurements are calibrated according to a specific procedure and allow the determination of the welding interface stiffness using a nonlinear fitting procedure in the frequency domain. Performing the characterization of plates after diffusion welding using this method allows a useful assessment of the material state as a function of the diffusion bonding process.

Abstract: International audience; The upcoming depletion of fossil fuels calls for the development of alternative energies produced from renewable resources. Particularly, energy valorisation of agriculture and food processing wastes is one of the most promising tools for renewable energy production. The amount of food wastes is rapidly increasing due to urbanisation, industrialisation and population growth worldwide. They consequently represent a widely available resource, and their use as a raw material allows reducing the environmental cost associated with their disposal. These resources usually have high moisture content, making dry valorisation processes unattractive because of a costly drying step prior to conversion. Hydrothermal processes are conversely particularly well suited for the valorisation of wet organic wastes in an economical way, since they use water as the reaction medium. More specifically, liquid fuels can be produced using hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL). The process converts wet biomass into a crude-like oil with higher heating values up to 40 MJ/kg using subcritical water (T=250-370 degrees C, P=10-30 MPa). Though this is an active research area, the mechanisms of hydrothermal liquefaction still remain unclear today. Some processes have already been developed at the pilot scale for valorising food processing wastes. However, the development of HTL processes at industrial scales is facing technological and economic challenges. This paper discusses the two main issues to address for development of the process at large scales. On the one hand, hydrothermal conversion of food processing residues and model compounds is necessary to better understand the fundamentals of hydrothermal liquefaction. As well, technological and process integration issues have to be addressed to ensure economic viability of commercial HTL processes.

Abstract: International audience; A methodology for the design of compact transformers operating at high frequency is presented in this paper. A particular emphasis is paid to the thermal management of the magnetic core and of the winding components. For a 7kW Dual Active Bridge DC/DC converter, the objective is to reduce the core volume (< 60 cm3), improve the power efficiency (> 99 %) and integrate the serial inductance (8.7 µH) as being the leakage inductance of the transformer. A parametric study shows that the heating in the copper winding is very sensitive to the anisotropic thermal conduction behaviour of the wire. Due to this characteristic, a pot-core configuration is prone to a higher warming compared to the E-E core geometry, as the efficiency of the winding cooling is lower. In order to take part of the self-shielding ability of pot-cores, we studied new configurations in which internal thermal drains are inserted into voids specially designed to shorten the distance between the external cooled walls and the hottest points of the winding. The heating of internal components of the transformer and resulting thermal stress peak is reduced by 40 % paving the way for robust transformers with a power density that could theoretically reach up to 200 kW/dm3.

Abstract: International audience; Fluorescent silica nanoparticles are widely used for various applications from mechanical reinforcement to biology. In many cases, their surface has to be tailored. Herein fluorescent silica nanoparticles are synthesized by a reverse micro-emulsion process and functionalized by silane coupling agents owning amino and thiol groups. The functionalization is then characterized by macroscopic well-known methods (zeta potential, hydrophilic to hydrophobic ratio, etc.) and an original method based onto TEM observations of the contrast between the silica core and the metallic ions chelated by the functional groups grafted onto the surface is also introduced. This method reveals that the functionalization is effective and that it occurs by ''nano domains.'' It is therefore possible to characterize the functionalization by in situ observations. Finally, the characterized nanoparticles are incorporated into a PMMA thin film. The fluorescence of the nanoparticles allows the monitoring of the level of dispersion of the nanoparticles within the polymer and confirms all the other characterizations.

Abstract: International audience; In recent years, the mixed halide Perovskite Solar Cells (PSCs) triggered huge amount of R&D activities, thanks to their excellent optoelectronic properties, fast progressing power conversion efficiencies and low cost potential. On top of that, with their high specific power & compatibility with flexible substrate, PSCs appear as a promising mid/long-term alternative photovoltaic technology for space applications. However, the harsh space environment requires particularly robust PV solutions, especially against electrons & protons irradiations; detailed evaluation and comprehension of ageing under irradiations are thus key steps on PSCs development path. In this paper, we focus on perovskite materials and subsequently solar cells proton radiation hardness, with a fluence up to 5 x 1014 protons/cm2 at 1 MeV. Optical, microstructural and electrical characterisations, both in-situ and ex-situ, are used to track the evolutions of 4 different perovskite stoichiometries under irradiation. To this end, single layers, sub-assemblies and full solar cells stack were exposed to protons flux. This systematic approach allowed us to highlight the differences in radiation hardness of PSCs constituting layers: the photo-active Cs0.05FA0.95Pb(I1-xBrx)3 materials exhibits outstanding radiation hardness under the tested conditions, while the PTAA Hole Transport Layer (HTL) appears as a weak contact layer driving cells performance degradation at high fluences.; Ces dernières années, les cellules solaires à halogénures mixtes pérovskites (PSC) ont suscité un grand nombre d'activités de R&D, grâce à leurs excellentes propriétés optoélectroniques, à leurs rendements de conversion d'énergie qui progressent rapidement et à leur faible coût potentiel. En outre, grâce à leur puissance spécifique élevée et à leur compatibilité avec les substrats souples, les PSC apparaissent comme une technologie photovoltaïque alternative prometteuse à moyen/long terme pour les applications spatiales. Cependant, l'environnement hostile de l'espace exige des solutions photovoltaïques particulièrement robustes, notamment contre les irradiations d'électrons et de protons ; l'évaluation détaillée et la compréhension du vieillissement sous irradiation sont donc des étapes clés sur la voie du développement des PSC. Dans cet article, nous nous concentrons sur les matériaux pérovskites et, par conséquent, sur la résistance des cellules solaires aux rayonnements de protons, avec une fluence allant jusqu'à 5x1014 protons/cm² à 1 MeV. Des caractérisations optiques, microstructurales et électriques, à la fois in-situ et ex-situ, sont utilisées pour suivre l'évolution de 4 stœchiométries de pérovskite différentes sous irradiation. A cette fin, des couches uniques, des sous-ensembles et des piles de cellules solaires complètes ont été exposés à un flux de protons. Cette approche systématique nous a permis de mettre en évidence les différences de dureté aux radiations des PSCs constituant les couches : les matériaux photo-actifs Cs0.05FA0.95Pb(I1-xBrx)3 présentent une dureté aux radiations exceptionnelle dans les conditions testées, tandis que la couche de transport de trous PTAA (HTL) apparaît comme une couche de contact faible entraînant une dégradation des performances des cellules.

Abstract: International audience; Nd-based (Nd-Fe-B) permanent magnets are widely used in the field of new energies. However, the worldwide pressure on their supply is pushing manufacturers to develop new magnets with reduced Nd content, replaced by other less critical rare earths (RE), typically Ce and La. The complexity induced by the multitude of elements involved in the production of this new set of magnets requires a numerical approach. The overall objective of this study is to better predict the manufacturing conditions of these substituted magnets of global composition (Nd,RE)$_2$Fe$_{14}$B.This work focuses on the effect of the addition of Ce to the Nd-Fe-B base system, which may lead to the formation of the CeFe$_2$ intermetallic with poor magnetic properties. This phase may dissolve a significant amount of Nd and has an impact on the efficiency of the magnets.In parallel to the experimental approach on the interactions between rare earths within the (RE)$_2$Fe$_{14}$B composition, a thermodynamic database related to these new magnets is being developed with the CALPHAD method. Experimental results on this quaternary system and thermodynamic properties reinforced by ab-initio calculations on some constitutive phases will be presented. Some application calculations will also illustrate the usefulness of the CALPHAD approach to improve the control of the compositions and microstructures of magnets during the manufacturing processes of such complex materials.

Abstract: International audience; Au fur et à mesure du développement des différentes architectures de cellules photovoltaïques, la passivation du silicium s’est révélée être une amélioration clé des performances[1]. Dans les années 2010, l’évolution des recherches amène les dispositifs constitués de couches minces. On observe alors une diminution des efficacités avec la diminution des épaisseurs (< 200 microns)[1]. Les rapports surface sur volume pour du silicium cristallin sont désormais tels que les recombinaisons des porteurs de charge en surface avant et arrière deviennent limitantes avec une forte diminution des durées de vie des porteurs. Après avoir fait un tour d’horizon des matériaux étudiés et utilisés pour la passivation du silicium, on présentera les diverses propriétés du nitrure d’aluminium. L’AlN est en effet un excellent candidat. Son gap indirect implique d’une part des recombinaisons radiatives très rares. D’autre part, sa conductivité thermique proche de celle du cuivre pourrait favoriser les évacuations de chaleur. Il faut rappeler que l’échauffement des dispositifs est un facteur important de dégradation des performances. Non seulement les fortes températures dégradent les efficacités solaires des modules mais elles détériorent aussi les caractéristiques des éléments polymères des dispositifs[2]. Pour tenter d’y remédier, les matériaux d’encapsulation (dits ‘’packaging’’) doivent ainsi être capables d’évacuer au plus vite la chaleur. Lors de l’exposé, plusieurs variétés de microstructures AlN/AlNO accessibles grâce à la pulvérisation cathodique magnétron seront présentées [3]. Abstract: International audience; The improvement of the electrochemical behavior of solid oxide cells (SOC) stronglydepends on optimizing the oxygen electrode architecture and the choice of electrochemicallyactive materials. Lanthanide-nickelates are considered as interesting candidates for the activefunctional layer in high- to intermediate temperature SOC, however thermally induced celldeterioration remains a challenge.Based on decomposition studies of praseodymium-nickelate (Pr2NiO4+δ, PNO) [1], theelectrochemical properties of one of its decomposition products, Pr6O11, were investigated byRakesh et al. [2]. For nanostructured Pr6O11 electrodes, deposited by means of electrostaticspray deposition (ESD) on top of GDC (Ce0.9Gd0.1O2−δ) electrolytes, exceptional low valuesof polarization resistance were found (0.02 Ω cm2at 600 °C). Combined with the observedchemical stability (10 days, 800 °C, air), the material was considered a potentially interestingSOC oxygen electrode material for intermediate temperature application.The focus of this work was put on the synthesis and electrochemical testing of Pr6O11-GDCcomposite electrodes by ESD and screen-printing (SP) with the aim to increase theelectrochemically active interface (triple-phase boundary, TPB) between electrolyte andelectrode material and to support ionic charge transfer. Specifically, the influence of electrodearchitecture was investigated by comparing double-layer (Pr6O11 topped by a LSM currentcollecting layer (CCL)) and triple-layer architectures (Pr6O11 on porous, screen-printed GDC,topped by a LSM-CCL), which were prepared based on previous work [3].In this talk, the impact of ESD parameters and sintering conditions on the Pr6O11 electrodenanostructure is presented, as well as the importance of a minimum CCL thickness. As aconsequence of different grain sizes and porosity at the Pr6O11-GDC interface, an emphasis isput on the development of polarization resistance values. Finally, the study of an “ex-situ”composite triple-layer architecture Pr6O11-GDC cell is discussed.

Abstract: La1-xSrxCoy-1FeyO3-δ (LSCF) is a widely used oxygen electrode in Solid Oxide Cells (SOCs). Despite its high electrochemical activity combined with a good mixed ionic and electronic conductivity, it is prone to a phase decomposition upon operation decreasing the global cell performance. However, the underlying mechanisms for the reaction mechanism and the degradation are still not precisely understood and require investigations at atomic scale. Therefore, Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations are used to better unravel the mechanisms occurring in the electrode. In particular, the interaction of the dioxygen gas with the AO-terminated (100) surface is studied. In this context, the oxygen reduction reaction is decomposed in a series of elementary steps including oxygen vacancy formation, adsorption of the dioxygen molecule on the bare surface and into a surface vacancy accompanied with the formation of intermediate oxygen species, followed by the dissociation and incorporation into the bulk. The calculations have been carried out at two different Cobalt contents (y=0.125 and y=0.25).

Abstract: Solid oxide cells (SOCs) have attracted a growing attention thanks to their high efficiency and ability to operate in both electrolysis (SOEC) and fuel cell (SOFC) modes. Despite its great potential, the current SOC technology faces significant cell degradation during long-term operation. The degradation phenomena are still not well understood as they involve complex and intricate processes arising at different length scales. Additionally, it has been shown that the degradation rate under SOEC operation is generally higher than in SOFC mode. To address this issue, durability tests were performed in SOEC mode at 750, 800 and 850 °C for 2000 h at -1 A cm-2 in 10/90 vol.% H2/H2O and dry air. The electrochemical performance of the cells was assessed using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. In addition, advanced characterization techniques with nanometer and atomic resolution have been used to study material degradation after long-term testing.

Abstract: International audience; Given the toxic nature of many volatile organic compounds (VOCs) present within indoor settings, it behooves the building engineering community to develop control strategies for contaminant removal to mitigate health impacts and improve well-being within indoor building environments. Photocatalytic paints belong to a class of technologies potentially used to obtain self-cleaning wall surfaces for air decontamination within building environments. They offer a promising solution for the building engineering industry involved in paint manufacturing processes to produce paint formulations that limit indoor air pollution and consequently individual exposition of inhabitants. In this work, we report on the uptake efficiency of m-xylene on one reference paint and three mineral paints impregnated with a photocatalytic agent, namely, a conventional photocatalyst containing 3.5% of nano-TiO2 and two new nano-TiO2 photocatalysts coated with polyethylene glycol (PEG 3350) and a hybrid cellulose nanocrystals–nano-TiO2 (CNC) containing 3.5% and 0.5% of nanoparticles, respectively. The photocatalytic degradation of these paints under UV irradiation and the consequent VOC emissions were assessed to evaluate the photocatalytic stability of the nano-TiO2 photocatalytic paints. The experimental results shown neither photocatalytic activity nor VOC emissions for the reference paint containing exclusively micro-TiO2 (that is, no nano-TiO2 material) particles under given experimental conditions. On the other hand, the results showed that the paint containing CNC nanoparticles (NPs) had only a finite photocatalytic effect that was likely due to the low quantity of the nano-TiO2 photocatalyst present within the paint formulation matrix. Furthermore, it was observed that the paints containing nano-TiO2 and PEG 3350 NPs resulted in an important photocatalytic activity that, unfortunately, led to consequential VOC emissions resulting from the polymeric matrix photo-oxidation reactivity under the given experimental conditions employed. Overall, the experimental results indicate that the paint containing PEG 3350 NPs had a greater photocatalytic activity than the paint containing the nano-TiO2 particles. Further, it was observed that the VOC emissions of this PEG 3350 paint decreased with the aging time (28% and 10% for 500 hours and 1000 hours of aging, respectively). Based on these results, the PEG 3350 photocatalyst integrated in mineral paint is a promising indoor air decontamination engineering solution.

Abstract: International audience; Sodium-ion batteries are a promising technology to respond to the critical availability of lithium. The mostsuitable material for negative electrode is hard-carbon, which can be obtained from biomass. Usually, it issynthetized by two pyrolysis steps at low (about 450ׄ°C) and high temperature (1500°C), which requires adry starting material. Unlike pyrolysis, hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) has the advantage of immergingthe material in water: there is no need in drying the biomass before processing. Furthermore, during theprocess, inorganics tend to leach in the liquid phase, which is can be positive for the resultingelectrochemical properties of hard-carbon. It makes HTC an interesting alternative to the first lowtemperature pyrolysis. The objective of this work is to understand the influence of initial feedstockcomposition, both on the material properties after HTC and the high-temperature pyrolysis and on the final battery performances in order to optimize the chain feedstock/process/product. Elemental compositions were characterized at the different steps by CHNS analysis, ICP-OES and UV-visible spectroscopy, and crystalline structure was characterized by XRD. As expected, the inorganic elements leached to a large extent to the liquid phase during HTC, however in different proportions depending on the feedstock tested.The resulting hard carbons contained therefore little impurities and showed very good performances when tested in batteries, both in terms of initial columbic efficiency, cyclability among 100 cycles and specific capacity. These performances are promising since they are similar to graphite in lithium-ion batterie

Abstract: International audience; Research on metal halide perovskites as absorbers for X-ray detection is an attractive subject due to the optimal optoelectronic properties of these materials for high-sensitivity applications. However, the contact degradation and the long-term instability of the current limit the performance of the devices, in close causality with the dual electronic-ionic conductivity of these perovskites. Herein, millimeter-thick methylammonium-lead bromide (MAPbBr$_3$) single and polycrystalline samples are approached by characterizing their long-term dark current and photocurrent under X-ray incidence. It is shown how both the dark current and the sensitivity of the detectors follow similar trends at short-circuit (V = 0 V) after biasing. By performing drift-diffusion numerical simulations, it is revealed how large ionic-related built-in fields not only produce relaxations to equilibrium lasting up to tens of hours but also continue to affect the charge kinetics under homogeneous low photogeneration rates. Furthermore, a method is suggested for estimating the ionic mobility and concentration by analyzing the initial current at short-circuit and the characteristic diffusion times.

Abstract: International audience; Nanostructured silicon−graphite composites range among the best options forachieving next-generation high-energy anodes forhighperformance lithium-ion batteries. Growing silicon nanowires ongraphite give access tocomposites with high capacity andstability, asthesilicon distributes homogeneously intheelectrode, and thedirect contact provides enhanced mechanical stability even insilicon-rich (>25 wt%)active materials. However, thecost-effective production ofsuch composites remains achallenge. Here, we introduce low-cost catalysts, tinsulfide andtinoxide, enabling silicon nanowire growth atalower temperature than with widely used gold catalysts, and investigate their impact onthecomposite nanostructure andcomposition. The small difference detected inthecomposition oftheproducts obtained with both catalysts required thedevelopment ofareliable method tomeasure thelow-level oxygen content anddistribution within thecomposite. Itrevealed thatoxygen from theSnO 2 growth seeds isincorporated intothesilicon nanowires, while nosulfur from theSnScatalyst could bedetected. We show thatSnSseeds result inananode material ofsuperior initial Coulombic efficiency of81%, while capacity, stability incycling, andratecapability arelessaffected bythechoice ofthecatalyst. Thecomposite anodes, optimized foracapacity of1000 mAh g−1 at C/5rate, deliver anareal capacity ofupto3.6mAh cm−2 and82% capacity retention over 200cycles. Their ratecapability of780 mAh g−1 at5Csurpasses thatofgold-seeded silicon−graphite composites. Theinsight obtained from thisstudy provides guidance forthereliable low-cost synthesis andquality control ofsilicon-containing active materials forLi-ion battery anodes.

Abstract: International audience; The highest levels of environmental performance are achieved when environmental criterion is introduced in the early stages of the design and development process of new technologies. Thus, the availability of environmental information throughout their lifecycle is fundamental for ecodesign and the LCA methodology can provide this information. However, during design decision making in a R&D context, LCA is mainly applied at a low level of technology maturity and for researchers this remains a difficult requirement to consider. This work aims at responding to the challenge of environmental performance criteria integration into technological developments of future generations of batteries and will be applied to three case studies: the advanced Li-ion, Lithium-Sulphur and all-solid-state battery technologies. The objective is to propose a methodology to support researchers through ecodesign decision-making by helping them to understand the environmental issues and to identify the levers for improving the environmental performance of new generations of batteries.The Design Research Methodology (DRM) framework proposed by Blessing and Chakrabarti (2009) was adopted. The DRM application leads on, among others, the definition of resources and needs in terms of environmental assessment as well as action levers and limits in ecodesign for this R&D context. This results in the identification of three moments of support where environmental evaluation is needed: project set-up, daily R&D tasks and final evaluation of the technology. To meet this needs, the proposal is based on a ecodesign toolbox built on adapted R&D prospective LCA principles which consists of four operational tools for the research teams: A Li-ion batteries environmental impacts database for the 3 new battery technologies and commercial reference technologies. A simplified and parameterized assessment tool where modelling can be performed depending on the researcher context and with a specific assessment of material criticality. An ecodesign suggestion bank which presents a collection of ecodesign tools. And a series of short videos for researcher awareness and training about the issues and challenges arising from the battery sector.The set of tools that support the new method are being developed and their usability will be validated during the last phase of the DRM. It is expected that this proposal will guide researchers in their decision making all along the design process.

Abstract: International audience; This study shows the design of a low-cost cell-module optical wireless communication system within an electric vehicle battery pack module.The increase in the energy density of the cells is accompanied by increasing constraints on the monitoring of their state. This implies an increase in the number and type of sensors used close to the cells and therefore an increase in the number of connections between the cells' surroundings and the cell monitoring/management system at module level.Wired connections are costly and prone to failure because they are often implemented manually. Monitoring/management systems therefore use distributed sensor systems connected by an isolated wired communication bus of the Daisy Chain type, often offering data rates of up to 1 Mbits.Studies have been carried out on wireless communication systems to replace these Daisy Chains [1]. Some use radio with a simple integration of Bluetooth gateway components [2]. Radio communications can have disadvantages in terms of confidentiality of the data exchanged and resistance to attacks from outside the battery pack.Powerline communication systems have also been proposed. These are sensitive to the noise generated on the power circuit. They are also sensitive to the variation in the impedance of the battery pack, which does not allow the case of advanced battery architectures such as Self Reconfigurable Batteries [3].An optical inter-module communication solution has also been proposed by LION Smart [4]. This solution is based on the same principle as the wired Daisy Chain, i.e. messages are sent back and forth between serial and pack stages. Thus, the data rate is divided as many times as there are communication nodes (one hundred to two hundred times for the case of a battery pack). The proposed solution is based directly on the integration of discrete infrared receiver circuits which do not solve the cost and power constraints.Most of the proposed solutions do not allow the management of events in real time, such as the synchronisation of measurements.This study proposes to investigate the implementation of an optical wireless communication bus between cells and modules that integrates the space, power and cost constraints imposed by this level of integration.The communication bus is based on the principle of open air communication between cells and module by exploiting the empty spaces within the module for light propagation. The environment of a module or even a battery pack offers interesting characteristics in terms of signal-to-noise ratio for light signals. This allows the use of very small and low cost solutions which is an important criterion for cell level integration.The characteristics of the communication bus are asymmetrical in order to take into account the specific constraints of the cell nodes and the module node. In contrast to the cell nodes, the module node is less constrained in terms of compactness and even cost because there are fewer of them in the system.The complexity of receiving an optical message, and therefore its cost and space requirements, increases with the bandwidth used, while the bandwidth of the transmission stage is only slightly affected. Thus, different bandwidths are used for uplink and downlink communications. Module-to-cell downlink communication is limited to a low bandwidth, while cell-to-module communication uses a higher bandwidth.This asymmetry is compensated by another asymmetry in the communication protocols used by the upstream and downstream channels. The slow communication between the module node and the cell nodes is based on periodic broadcast communication. The fast communication between the cell nodes and the module node is based on sequenced point-to-point communication.The broadcast communications from the module node are used as a time reference for the synchronisation of the sequential cell-to-module communications, thus reducing the clock accuracy constraints applied to the cell node sufficiently to avoid the need to use expensive time references such as crystal oscillators.A higher level protocol is then developed. This protocol is based on the request and answer principle. Each request and answer consists of a frame of several bytes including addressing and integrity information (in the form of an error checking code). The module node interrogates the cell nodes with a broadcast request addressing either a specific cell node or all the cell nodes (depending on the address contained in the question frame). The nodes concerned then respond in their respective slot times according to the nature of the request.A prototype of the communication bus that meets the integration constraints of a 12-cell pouch cell battery module has been realized. This prototype consists of 12 cell communication nodes and one module-level communication node. The open air propagation channel for the optical communications is made with a cross-section of 7x21mm over a length of 200mm. Each cell node is spaced at a distance of between 12 and 17mm.The cell communication nodes are implemented with a target component cost of less than $1 per cell (including encoding, transmitting, decoding, receiving, voltage and temperature measurement stages, an MCU monitoring the cell parameters and powering all these elements). The resulting bandwidths are 115.2kbits module to cell and 1.14Mbits cell to module with a minimum request-answers period of 10 ms.Tests of a low cost reflective coating were also carried out on one side of the propagation channel with improvements of around 40% on the amplitude of the optical signal.This work is part of the European Cobra project and will be used to produce 3 automotive modules of 12 cobalt-free cells equipped with advanced near-cell sensors.References[1] S. Abstract: Ionometallurgy can be considered as an alternative to conventional hydrometallurgy for precious metals recovery, reducing process hazards and toxic waste production. More specifically, ionic solvents are of particular interest for electrometallurgy processes, since being intrinsically conductive and stable in a broad range of potentials.At the edge of ionic solvents, Deep Eutectic Solvents (DES) are better candidates than regular ionic liquids, being much less expensive and greener, since they are often partially bio-sourced and they exhibit a higher biodegradability, as for betaine, choline-based DES. We recently demonstrated that palladium (Pd) and gold (Au) can be quantitatively leached and recovered in a single electrochemical reactor using Ethaline, a DES composed of choline chloride (ChCl) as hydrogen bond acceptor and ethylene glycol (EG) as hydrogen bond donor, typically in a 1:2 molar ratio. However, if ChCl can be considered as a “green” reactant, this is not the case for EG. Comparable DES with a lower toxic nature than Ethaline can be obtained by replacing EG by other glycols e.g. propylene glycol (PG), widely used in cosmetics and pharmacology: the resulting DES with PG is Propeline. The present paper deals with the potential of this less known DES in the recovery of precious metals.Because the change in the hydrogen bond donor with PG leads to a modification of the DES bulk properties, the first part of this work deals with the determination of Propeline density, viscosity, conductivity and electrochemical stability, which are properties of interest for electrochemical processes. The influence of water content on these properties was thoroughly investigated. Values of the above property parameters are compared to those obtained with Ethaline as a reference DES. In a second part, we present the performances of Propeline for the selective electrochemical leaching of Ag, Pd and Au. The performance of Propeline in leaching was evaluated in ambient atmosphere, i.e. in the presence of water at percent levels. Leaching efficiencies could be studied after thorough development of analytical procedures dedicated to elemental analysis e.g. ICP-EOS in DES. The speciation of leached metals was determined by use of cross-linked analysis, namely UV-vis, and EXAFS/XANES spectroscopic techniques, in both cases with comparison with those in Ethaline. Systems (leached metal species-DES) were then thoroughly studied by electrochemical methods. In particular, diffusion coefficients of the solvated metal species were determined by electrochemical transient and stationary techniques, in the aim of leached metal recovery by electrochemical deposition.

Abstract: International audience; In the design and synthesis of energy systems, mathematical tools such as optimization algorithms are often used. While using them, environmental indicators are increasingly used as optimization criteria to exploit the possible environmental benefits of these systems. The problem is that the high number of environmental indicators poses a problem for optimization algorithms in terms of convergence, computational time and visualization. In this paper, this problem is addressed through a many-objective search of solutions using a state-of-the-art evolutionary algorithm, NSGA-III. Furthermore, the performance of this algorithm is tested using different settings in the PCA-based objective reduction framework. The original 14 indicators are reduced to seven, four, three and two, which reveal important insights about the use of NSGA-III, objective reduction and a combination of the two. It was found that by using objective reduction, the performance of NSGA-III can be further improved in terms of the quality of solutions and computational time. However, beyond a certain point, further objective reduction leads to a trade-off between solution quality and computational time. For this case study, the best quality solutions were obtained in the PCA reduction procedure when the CUT value was maintained at 99.99% without additional reduction in the last step, using a correlation matrix. The algorithms were applied to a real-life sizing case study involving hydrogen production from polymer-electrolyte-membrane (PEM) water electrolysis, for which the demand is furnished by the electricity spot market, solar photovoltaics (PV) or wind turbine in Marseille, France. These results will be useful for future applications of many-objective optimization and objective reduction. They will also be practical for including environmental indicators in the many-objective search for solutions.

Abstract: International audience; The effective diffusion properties of a gas diffusion layer (GDL) made of the assembly of a fibrous gas diffusion medium (GDM) and a microporous layer (MPL) are characterized from numerical simulations on reconstructed images obtained from combining micro X-ray computed tomography and focused ion beam-scanning electron microscopy (FIB-SEM).Using a multiscale approach, the MPL effective diffusion tensor is characterized from the FIB-SEM reconstructed 3D images considering Knudsen and Fickian diffusions. The GDM-MPL assembly effective through-plane diffusion coefficient is computed via a mixed approach combing a continuum description for the MPL and the explicit consideration of the MPL cracks and GDM fibers. The impact of cracks in the MPL is thus evaluated. A diffusive resistance model is developed to evaluate the impact of the MPL penetration into the GDM and the impact of the GDM compressibility.

Abstract: International audience; Research on graphene-related two-dimensional (2D) materials (GR2Ms) in recent years is strongly moving from academia to industrial sectors with many new developed products and devices on the market. Characterization and quality control of the GR2Ms and their properties are critical for growing industrial translation, which requires the development of appropriate and reliable analytical methods. These challenges are recognized by International Organization for Standardization (ISO 229) and International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC 113) committees to facilitate the development of these methods and standards which are currently in progress. Toward these efforts, the aim of this study was to perform an international interlaboratory comparison (ILC), conducted under Versailles Project on Advanced Materials and Standards (VAMAS) Technical Working Area (TWA) 41 “Graphene and Related 2D Materials” to evaluate the performance (reproducibility and confidence) of the thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) method as a potential new method for chemical characterization of GR2Ms. Three different types of representative and industrially manufactured GR2Ms samples, namely, pristine few-layer graphene (FLG), graphene oxide (GO), and reduced graphene oxide (rGO), were used and supplied to ILC participants to complete the study. The TGA method performance was evaluated by a series of measurements of selected parameters of the chemical and physical properties of these GR2Ms including the number of mass loss steps, thermal stability, temperature of maximum mass change rate (Tp) for each decomposition step, and the mass contents (%) of moisture, oxygen groups, carbon, and impurities (organic and non-combustible residue). TGA measurements determining these parameters were performed using the provided optimized TGA protocol on the same GR2Ms by 12 participants across academia, industry stakeholders, and national metrology institutes. This paper presents these results with corresponding statistical analysis showing low standard deviation and statistical conformity across all participants that confirm that the TGA method can be satisfactorily used for characterization of these parameters and the chemical characterization and quality control of GR2Ms. The common measurement uncertainty for each parameter, key contribution factors were identified with explanations and recommendations for their elimination and improvements toward their implementation for the development of the ISO/IEC standard for chemical characterization of GR2Ms.

Abstract: This thesis is part of the industrial context of rapid development of electric vehicles, which includes the growing demand for more powerful and compact battery packs. These packs are generally made with lithium-ion battery cells and require a Battery Thermal Management System (BTMS) for an efficient cooling and to limit the thermal runaway hazard. Thermal runaway occurs when a cell is damaged, defective or when its temperature reaches a threshold value.In this case, the cell heats up spontaneously and its temperature rises rapidly, which can cause the expulsion of flammable gases, a chain reaction throughout the pack and ultimately a fire or explosion.The thermal management solution chosen in this thesis is the direct cooling of the immersed pack by a dielectric liquid circulating between the cells. The HFE-7100 has been selected as a working fluid for its eco-friendly coolant properties, its non-flammability, its attractive thermophysical properties, and especially for its boiling temperature at atmospheric pressure, which is very close to the estimated skin temperature at the beginning of a thermal runaway. The liquid can change phase to maintain the temperature in order to avoid thermal runaway, and to evacuate the heat in accidental situations.One scientific bottleneck for such a pack design, given the small spacing between cells or between cells and the pack casing, is the flow boiling in a vertical mini-channel. Confined boiling flow is a very efficient mode of heat transfer to dissipate high fluxes. The question to be addressed is whether such a flow can help in the hypothetical case of a thermal runaway.In this thesis, an experimental and a numerical approach are jointly conducted to study the cooling solution and the flow boiling.In a first step, the state of the art of Battery Thermal Management System and flow boiling in a mini-channel is presented. A general description of flow boiling and numerical simulation approaches of two-phase flows are proposed.In a second step, a test campaign is conducted with an experimental device to study the flow boiling of HFE-7100 in a vertical mini channel. The local heat transfer coefficient is obtained by using an inverse method. Heat transfer, critical heat flux (CHF), flow regimes and pressure drops are the main parameters studied. The influence of different parameters such as mass flow rate, subcooling, pressure and surface structuring is analyzed.In a third step, a numerical modeling approach is proposed. The simulation of the two-phase flow of HFE-7100 in the mini-channel of the test section is proposed with an Eulerian approach. The numerical models are validated from the experimental data. Finally, a battery module immersed by HFE-7100 is modeled, and a thermal runaway scenario of a cell is suggested and simulated. Calculations show that the cooling system is an effective and promising solution to dissipate heat and prevent thermal runaway propagation.; Cette thèse s’inscrit dans le contexte industriel de fort développement des véhicules électriques qui contiennent des packs de batteries de plus en plus puissants et compacts. Ces packs sont généralement constitués de cellules de batteries lithium-ion qui nécessitent un système de gestion thermique. En effet, un des risques majeurs est l’emballement thermique d’une ou plusieurs de ces cellules, emballement qui se produit lorsqu'une cellule est endommagée ou défectueuse ou lorsqu’elle dépasse une certaine température. Dans ce cas, la cellule s’échauffe spontanément et sa température croît rapidement ce qui peut provoquer l’expulsion de gaz inflammables, une réaction en chaine dans tout le pack et in fine un incendie ou une explosion.La solution de gestion thermique retenue dans le cadre de la thèse est le refroidissement direct du pack immergé par un liquide diélectrique circulant entre les cellules. Le HFE-7100 a été choisi comme fluide de travail pour son faible impact écologique, son ininflammabilité, ses propriétés thermophysiques et surtout pour sa température d'ébullition à la pression atmosphérique très proche de la température de peau estimée au début d'un emballement thermique. Le liquide doit changer de phase pour maintenir la température afin d’éviter l’emballement thermique, et évacuer la chaleur en situation accidentelle.L’agencement des cellules dans le pack et leur faible espacement induisent un problème scientifique d’ébullition convective en mini-canal vertical. L'ébullition convective en milieu confiné est un mode de transfert de chaleur très efficace pour dissiper les flux élevés. Une question qui se pose est de connaitre l’efficacité d’un tel écoulement dans le cas hypothétique d'un emballement thermique.Dans cette thèse, une approche expérimentale et une approche numérique sont conjointement menées pour étudier la solution de refroidissement et l'ébullition convective.Dans un premier temps, l’état de l’art de la gestion thermique des packs de batterie des véhicules électriques et de l’ébullition convective en milieu confiné est exposé. Une description générale de l’ébullition convective et des approches de simulation numérique des écoulements diphasiques applicables à notre étude est proposée.Dans un deuxième temps, une campagne d’essais est menée sur un dispositif expérimental pour étudier l’ébullition convective du HFE-7100 dans un mini-canal vertical. La mise en place d’une méthode inverse a permis de calculer le coefficient d’échange local. Le transfert de chaleur, le flux critique (CHF), les régimes d’écoulements et les pertes de charge sont les principaux paramètres étudiés. L’influence de différents paramètres tels que le débit, le sous-refroidissement, la pression et la structuration de la surface est analysée.Dans un troisième temps, une approche de modélisation numérique est proposée. La simulation de l’écoulement diphasique du HFE-7100 dans le mini-canal de la section d’essais est proposée avec une approche eulérienne. Les modèles numériques sont validés à partir des données expérimentales.Enfin, un module de batteries immergé dans du HFE-7100 est modélisé et un scénario d’emballement thermique d’une cellule est défini et simulé. Le système de refroidissement s'avère être une solution efficace et prometteuse pour évacuer la chaleur et empêcher la propagation l'emballement thermique.

Abstract: A long-term test of 2000 h has been carried out on a typical solid oxide cell in electrolysis mode at −1 A.cm−2 and 750 °C. The 3D reconstructions of the pristine and aged cermet have revealed a strong Ni depletion at the electrolyte interface. To explain this result, an electrochemical and phase-field model has been developed to simulate the Ni migration in Ni/YSZ electrode. For this purpose, a mechanism has been proposed that takes into account the impact of polarization on the Ni/YSZ wettability. In this approach, it assumes that the Ni/YSZ interfacial energy is changed by the concentration of oxygen vacancies in the electrochemical double layer. Thanks to the model, the Ni migration has been computed in the same condition than the experiment and complemented by a simulation in reverse condition in SOFC mode. In good agreement with the experiment, the simulations have revealed a strong Ni depletion at the electrolyte interface after operation under electrolysis current. On the contrary, a negligible Ni redistribution with a very slight Ni enrichment has been predicted at the electrolyte interface after SOFC operation. These results tend to prove the relevance of the mechanism.

Abstract: The Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell is a promising "low carbon" technology to power electric vehicles. However, the shut-down and start-up phases have been identified as critical events because the existence of a transient H2|Air front on the anode side causes the circulation of internal currents leading to huge degradation reactions within the cathode catalytic layer. The performance and ultimately the lifetime of the cell are thus strongly altered. Although these degradation mechanisms have been studied at small scale, the implementation of mitigation strategies at stack/system scale remains insufficient to meet the lifetime requirements. This thesis is therefore interested in understanding the degradation mechanisms and quantifying the performance losses at the representative scale of a state-of-the-art cell design as a function of shut-down and start-up conditions. This is achieved through:-The development of accelerated aging tests emulating a realistic profile of the cathode potential during the start-up phase in a 100 cm² single cell with a state-of-the-art fluidic design and cell core. A sensitivity study has been performed to evaluate the respective impact of the maximum potential reached, the duration of the front, the gas humidity and the temperature on the performance losses. Post-mortem analyses have also been conducted to characterize the evolution of the physicochemical and electrochemical properties of the active layer in relation to the degradation mechanisms.-The transposition of the current by-pass mitigation strategies up to the short-stack scale. For this purpose, a series of tests has been developed to reproduce the start-up phase to compare two electrical architectures: the shunt resistance connection for the whole stack or for each cell individually. Local current density measurements have also been performed simultaneously to access the local and internal operation of the cells and thus to understand the differences in terms of protection of these architectures compared to the reference case without by-pass.; La pile à combustible à membrane échangeuse de protons est une technologie « bas carbone » prometteuse pour alimenter les véhicules électriques. Cependant, les phases d’arrêt et de démarrage ont été identifiées comme critiques car l'existence d'un front H2|Air transitoire du côté anodique provoque la circulation de courants internes causant de fortes réactions de dégradation au sein de la couche catalytique cathodique. Les performances et in fine la durée de vie de la pile sont ainsi fortement altérées. Certes, ces mécanismes de dégradation ont été étudiés à petite échelle mais la mise en œuvre de stratégies d'atténuation à l’échelle pile/système demeure insuffisante pour répondre aux exigences de durée de vie. Cette thèse s’intéresse donc à comprendre les mécanismes de dégradations et à quantifier les pertes de performances à l’échelle représentative d’un design de cellule à l’état de l’art en fonction des conditions d’arrêt et de démarrage. Ceci passe donc par :-Le développement de tests de vieillissement accéléré émulant un profil réaliste du potentiel cathodique lors de la phase de démarrage en mono-cellule de 100 cm² avec un design fluidique et un cœur de pile à l’état de l’art. Une étude de sensibilité a été réalisée pour évaluer l'impact respectif du potentiel maximal atteint, de la durée du front, de l'humidité du gaz et de la température sur les pertes de performances. Des analyses post-mortem ont également été menées pour caractériser finement l'évolution des propriétés physico-chimiques et électrochimiques de la couche active en lien avec les mécanismes de dégradation.-La transposition des stratégies d'atténuation par dérivation de courant à l'échelle de l’empilement de puissance. Pour cela, une série de tests a été développée afin de reproduire la phase de démarrage pour comparer deux architectures électriques : la connexion de résistance de fuite pour l'ensemble de la pile ou pour chaque cellule individuellement. Des mesures locales de densité de courant ont été effectuées simultanément pour accéder au fonctionnement interne local des cellules et ainsi comprendre les différences en termes de protection de ces architectures par rapport au cas de référence sans dérivation.

Abstract: International audience; Solar thermochemical fuel production technologies, such as biomass gasification, are confronted to the intermittency of solar irradiance. The development of dynamic simulation tools is thus required to design around-the-clock control strategies. An innovative model was developed here, based on unsteady mass and energy conservation equations, considering gas-phase thermodynamic equilibrium and heterogeneous char oxidation kinetics. The accumulation of char and gas species production rates were therefore tracked throughout operation, giving insight into the reactor dynamics with optimized computational cost. The model was validated via a comparison with experimental results, regarding both thermal and chemical reactor performances. Simulations reliably predicted the evolution of reactor temperatures and syngas production rates, under both solar-only and hybridized (solar-autothermal) operation. Parametric studies regarding the impact of reactants injection rates on steady-state performances were finally proposed. Steam addition (0.22 to 0.60 g/min) increased the syngas H$_ 2$:CO molar ratio significantly (1.13 to 1.47). Biomass addition (1 to 3 g/min) boosted the solar-to-fuel efficiency (0.22 to 0.47), but altered the reactor temperature. Finally, oxygen addition kept the reactor running despite fluctuations of solar power, while decreasing the total H$_2$ +CO production and cold-gas efficiency linearly. A constant H$_2$ +CO production (2.17 NL/min) could however be achieved by feeding additional biomass and oxygen during hybridization, thus limiting the cold-gas efficiency decrease and improving the reactor energy efficiency (0.29 to 0.40). Such a dynamic reactor model can be further applied to hybridized gasification process optimization and dynamic control under real fluctuating solar irradiation conditions.

Abstract: International audience; Along the hydrogen supply chain, metallic components, such as pressure vessels, compressors and valves, are facing high pressure hydrogen gas. The object of this paper is to address microstructural as well as mechanical aspects of fatigue crack initiation and growth at room temperature in a quenched and tempered (Q&T) low alloy steel under hydrogen pressure in the range 0.5e35 MPa. For such steel, the need to perform tests in-situ under hydrogen pressure is required. The influence of hydrogen gas on the total life in terms of crack initiation and crack propagation is analyzed. The experimental techniques developed to detect crack initiation in a pressure vessel under hydrogen pressure are presented. Thanks to these technical developments the influence of hydrogen gas on the total life duration including crack initiation and crack propagation is analyzed. It is shown that the effect of hydrogen pressure on crack initiation is important. At constant load ratio, the hydrogen pressure effect on fatigue crack growth (FCG) is dependent on the loading amplitude (in terms of DK). These results related to cracking behavior are enriched with information on fracture surfaces appearance. The results presented have been achieved within the European project MATHRYCE [1] dedicated to Material Testing and Recommendations for Hydrogen Components under fatigue. They are part of a process necessary to give a scientific background to the development of a design methodology where hydrogen enhanced fatigue damage is taken into account.

Abstract: CAPLUS AN 2015:510771(Journal; Online Computer File); International audience; Electrochem. stabilities under cycling and overcharge of Li4Ti5O12 (LTO)//LiNi1/3Mn1/3Co1/3O2 (NMC) batteries with two ionic liq.-based electrolytes and a com. electrolyte were investigated at 25 and 60°. The electrolytes were constituted of ethylene carbonate/di-Me carbonate mixts. with LiPF6, and of imidazolium and pyrrolidinium-based ionic liqs. contg. the bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide anion (NTf2) assocd. to LiNTf2 salt. The expts. were performed in coin and pouch cells in order to follow the evolution of the stability of both solid, liq., and gas phases. The decompn. products and stability of the electrolytes was assessed by gas chromatog. coupled with IR spectroscopy. The characterization of the electrode surfaces by SEM, XRD, and XPS techniques was reported, after cycling and overcharge. The XPS anal. of both electrodes indicated that their surfaces were covered by an IL film in the case of NMC, and by several NTf2 anion decompn. products in the case of LTO. Abstract: International audience; Germanium is a promising active material for high energy density anodes in Li-ion batteries thanks to its good Li-ion conduction and mechanical properties. However, a deep understanding of the (de)lithiation mechanism of Ge requires advanced characterizations to correlate structural and chemical evolution during charge and discharge. Here we report a combined operando X-ray diffraction (XRD) and ex situ 7Li solid-state NMR investigation performed on crystalline germanium nanoparticles (c-Ge Nps) based anodes during partial and complete cycling at C/10 versus Li metal. High-resolution XRD data, acquired along three successive partial cycles, revealed the formation process of crystalline core–amorphous shell particles and their associated strain behavior, demonstrating the reversibility of the c-Ge lattice strain, unlike what is observed in the crystalline silicon nanoparticles. Moreover, the crystalline and amorphous lithiated phases formed during a complete lithiation cycle are identified. Amorphous Li7Ge3 and Li7Ge2 are formed successively, followed by the appearance of crystalline Li15Ge4 (c-Li15Ge4) at the end of lithiation. These results highlight the enhanced mechanical properties of germanium compared to silicon, which can mitigate pulverization and increase structural stability, in the perspective for developing high-performance anodes.
