Abstract

The chemical and structural changes of three lignocellulosic biomass samples during pyrolysis were investigated using both conventional and advanced characterization techniques. The use of ATR-FTIR as a characterization tool is extended by the proposal of a method to determine aromaticity, the calculation of both CH2/CH3 ratio and the degree of aromatic ring condensation ((R/C)u). With increasing temperature, the H/C and O/C ratios, XA and CH2/CH3 ratio decreased, while (R/C)u and aromaticity increased. The micropore network developed with increasing temperature, until the coalescence of pores at 1100 °C, which can be linked to increasing carbon densification, extent of aromatization and/or graphitization of the biomass chars. WAXRD-CFA measurements indicated the gradual formation of nearly parallel basic structural units with increasing carbonization temperature. The char development can be considered to occur in two steps: elimination of aliphatic compounds at low temperatures, and hydrogen abstraction and aromatic ring condensation at high temperatures.

Abstract

International audience; In this work, a new chromogenic calix(4) arene was functionalized onto self assembled monolayer (SAM) of cysteamine for cadmium ions detection and tested by using SPR measurement. The functionalization of modified SPR sensor is based on the oxidation of calixarene-SAM alcohol group to quinone. Four interfering ions were used Cu2+, Co2+, Mg2+ and Ca2+. pH of sensor in which the sensitivity of sensor is higher was optimized for cadmium ions and detection of ions was made in basic solution. Detection limit reached for Cd2+ is lower than 10(-11) M with a dynamic response time of about 16 s when changing from 10(-6) M cadmium to 10(-5) M.

Abstract

The transformation of lignocellulosic biomass into bio‐based commodity chemicals is technically possible. Among thermochemical processes, fast pyrolysis, a relatively mature technology that has now reached a commercial level, produces a high yield of an organic‐rich liquid stream. Despite recent efforts to elucidate the degradation paths of biomass during pyrolysis, the selectivity and recovery rates of bio‐compounds remain low. In an attempt to clarify the general degradation scheme of biomass fast pyrolysis and provide a quantitative insight, the use of fast pyrolysis microreactors is combined with spectroscopic techniques (i.e., mass spectrometry and NMR spectroscopy) and mixtures of unlabeled and 13C‐enriched materials. The first stage of the work aimed to select the type of reactor to use to ensure control of the pyrolysis regime. A comparison of the chemical fragmentation patterns of “primary” fast pyrolysis volatiles detected by using GC‐MS between two small‐scale microreactors showed the inevitable occurrence of secondary reactions. In the second stage, liquid fractions that are also made of primary fast pyrolysis condensates were analyzed by using quantitative liquid‐state 13C NMR spectroscopy to provide a quantitative distribution of functional groups. The compilation of these results into a map that displays the distribution of functional groups according to the individual and main constituents of biomass (i.e., hemicelluloses, cellulose and lignin) confirmed the origin of individual chemicals within the fast pyrolysis liquids.

Abstract

In all-oxide ferroelectric (FE) - superconductor (S) bilayers, due to the low carrier concentration of oxides compared to transition metals, the FE interfacial polarization charges induce an accumulation (or depletion) of charge carriers in the S. This leads either to an enhancement or a depression of its critical temperature depending on FE polarization direction.Here we exploit this effect at a local scale to define planar weak-links in high-temperature superconducting wires. This is realized in BiFeO3(FE)/YBa2Cu3O7(S)bilayers in which the remnant FE domain structure is written at will by locally applying voltage pulses with a conductive-tip atomic force microscope. In this fashion, the FE domain pattern defines a spatial modulation of superconductivity. This allows us to write a device whose electrical transport shows different temperature regimes and magnetic field matching effects that are characteristic of Josephson coupled weak-links. This illustrates the potential of the ferroelectric approach for the realization of high-temperature superconducting devices.

Abstract

The performance of vacuum, slow and fast pyrolysis processes to transfer energy from the paper waste sludge (PWS) to liquid and solid products was compared. Paper waste sludges with low and high ash content (8.5 and 46.7 wt.%) were converted under optimised conditions for temperature and pellet size to maximise both product yields and energy content. Comparison of the gross energy conversions, as a combination of the bio-oil/tarry phase and char (ECsum), revealed that the fast pyrolysis performance was between 18.5% and 20.1% higher for the low ash PWS, and 18.4% and 36.5% higher for high ash PWS, when compared to the slow and vacuum pyrolysis processes respectively. For both PWSs, this finding was mainly attributed to higher production of condensable organic compounds and lower water yields during FP. The low ash PWS chars, fast pyrolysis bio-oils and vacuum pyrolysis tarry phase products had high calorific values (∼18-23 MJ kg-1) making them promising for energy applications. Considering the low calorific values of the chars from alternative pyrolysis processes (∼4-7 MJ kg-1), the high ash PWS should rather be converted to fast pyrolysis bio-oil to maximise the recovery of usable energy products.

Abstract

Torrefaction experiments were carried out for three typical South African biomass samples (softwood chips, hardwood chips and sweet sorghum bagasse) to a weight loss of 30 wt.%. During torrefaction, moisture, non-structural carbohydrates and hemicelluloses were reduced, resulting in a structurally modified torrefaction product. There was a reduction in the average crystalline diameter (La) (XRD), an increase in the aromatic fraction and a reduction in aliphatics (substituted and unsubstituted) (CPMAS (13)C NMR). The decrease in the aliphatic components of the lignocellulosic material under the torrefaction conditions also resulted in a slight ordering of the carbon lattice. The degradation of hemicelluloses and non-structural carbohydrates increased the inclusive surface area of sweet sorghum bagasse, while it did not change significantly for the woody biomasses.

Abstract

International audience; Electrical measurements have been performed on spin-coated azo-calix[4]arene derivative on pre-cleaned indium thin oxide (ITO) substrates using current versus voltage, capacitance versus voltage and impedance spectroscopy measurements. The nature of trap states in single layer ITO/azo-calix[4]arene derivative/Al organic diodes has also been investigated. The energy band gap of the thin film containing calixarene derivative has been measured by UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy and is about 2.77 eV. The current-voltage characteristics have shown ohmic behavior at low voltages. At high applied bias the I-V characteristics can be successfully modeled by space-charge limited current (SCLC) theory. The impedance dependence of bias and frequency is discussed in terms of the presence of a depletion layer in the bulk. The device is accurately modeled, in a range of frequency between 100 Hz and 1 MHz, as a single parallel resistor and capacitor network placed in series with a resistance. Their values deduced from fitting experimental data to the model have given a dielectric relaxation time in the ms range and an exponential trap distribution.

Abstract

A new coating preparative method of the Pinus radiata feedstock was used to process a mixture of Acetocell lignin and sawdust prepared at different mass ratios of lignin to sawdust, 1:18 (LI 20 ) and 1:7 (LI 40 ) to overcome feeding issues into a fluidized bed pyrolysis reactor. The coated materials were structurally characterized by using spectrometric and microscopic techniques, which respectively confirmed the presence of saturated aliphatic and oxygenated side chains in the isolated lignin and the formation of a boundary layer around the woody biomass particles. The fast pyrolysis of the coated materials at 540 °C led to the decrease of both total liquid and organic yields and to the substantial increase of reactive water yield. Like yields, the addition of the technical lignin affected the product composition of fast pyrolysis bio-oil. These changes were both related to the oxygenated aliphatic nature of the lignin side-chains and to the thickness of the coating layer. This new preparation technique of the feedstock overcomes the technical barriers associated with the feeding of thermoset polymers into a bubbling fluidized bed reactor, without modifying its initial design; and enhanced the production of the phenolic rich fraction by controlling the thickness of the coating.

Abstract

Fast pyrolysis of Eucalyptus grandis was carried out using different reactor configurations and scale setups, a 0.1 kg/h bubbling fluidised bed (BFB) reactor, a 1 kg/h BFB reactor and a 10 kg/h twin-screw reactor. The influence of lignocellulosic composition, process configuration (reactor configuration, separation and condensation system) and their feed capacity on yields and quality of pyrolysis products was discussed. The increasing reactor scale study had constraints such as the availability of biomass feedstock with inherent changes in the chemical composition and the practicality of the condensation chain. Although the methods employed for phase separation and liquid collection differ from plant to plant limiting the repeatability of results, it was clearly identified that the implementation of efficient solid separation and use of mineral oil as the coolant system were crucial aspects of the mass production of organics. These results suggest that yields and quality of fast pyrolysis at a larger scale are all process-related rather than feedstock conditioned. A comparison of energy balances indicated that fast pyrolysis retained the same energy yield at scales of 1 and 10 kg/h.

Abstract

A thermogravimetric analysis technique coupled to an evolved gas analysis, namely the thermal desorption/gas chromatography–mass spectrometry method (TGA–TD/GC-MS) was developed, to identify and quantify condensable volatile compounds produced during the pyrolysis of lignocellulose. Four lignocellulose samples of different origins (i.e., pine, bamboo, corn cob and corn stover) were pyrolysed using a TGA system. Condensable volatiles released during pyrolysis were captured onto thermal desorption tubes and subsequently identified and quantified using a TD/GC–MS method. Chemical composition of condensable volatiles was statistically correlated with the original lignocellulose composition, using Principal Component Analysis (PCA). A total of 15–19 wt% (dry weight) of biomass pyrolysis products were quantified by the method, with an average Relative Standard Deviation on the high concentration condensable volatiles yield of 6.4%, a significant improvement to what has been reported in literature. The first two principal components accounted for 89.4% of the variance in the data and showed clear correlations between evolved condensable volatile compounds and compositional differences among the four biomass samples. The origin of most lignin-derived compounds could be determined, due to the limitation of secondary reactions under slow pyrolysis. The yield of levoglucosan and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural were consistent with the initial content of C 6 sugars in the feedstock, but also negatively correlated with the ash content. The quantification of acetic acid, the highest yielding condensable volatile product, can be used as an indicator of the number of acetyl groups in biomass.

Abstract

High surface area hexagonal ZnO nano-particles were obtained at room temperature from hydrolysis of the amide derivative Zn[N(SiMe 3 ) 2 ] 2 . The same procedure applied on silica or cellulose substrates led to homogeneous crack-free hybrid materials for which micro- down to nano-meter replication into ZnO cloth was achieved by calcination at 700 °C. These materials were characterized by FT-IR, UV–vis, photoluminescence, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). They demonstrated enhanced photocatalytic degradation of a tough pollutant such as CH 3 SSCH 3 compared with commercial ZnO powder.

Abstract

International audience; Some of advanced oxidation processes (AOP) are characterised by a special chemical feature: the ability to use the high reactivity of .OH radicals in driving oxidation processes. These radicals are suitable for achieving the complete abatement, even including the mineralization of less reactive pollutants. In this study, a photocatalytic process is used to degrade one herbicide of the imidazolinone family, Imazapyr. It was shown to be photodegraded rapidly and extensively in an aqueous solution. The decline of Imazapyr concentration in the solution followed a first-order kinetics. The apparent first order rate constant was found equal to 0.19 min-1 in distilled water at natural pH 3.8. The smaller activities found at acidic and basic pH were explained by considering the ionisation state of Imazapyr and the charge density of TiO2. The present work dealt with the influence of metal ions like Ni2+ and Cu2+ which are frequently present in agricultural wastewater on the photocatalytic efficiency of TiO2 in the elimination of Imazapyr. A detrimental effect of the presence of metallic species was observed only with samples containing amount of copper and nickel in the presence of TiO2. Several hypotheses were proposed to explain this phenomenon, passivation of TiO2 surface by adsorption of Cu2O and/or Cu°, formation of a complex or recombinaison of the e-/h+ pairs. At higher concentrations of metallic species like Cu2+ and Ni2+, a plateau was reached which could be explained by the photo-Fenton like reaction. In an attempt to understand the basic mechanisms of the degradation of Imazapyr in water by TiO2 photocatalysis, we discussed the primary degradation mechanism on the basis of the experimental results together with molecular orbital calculation of frontier electron density and partial charge.

Abstract

The uptake kinetics of gaseous ClONO2 and BrONO2 on aqueous surfaces were measured, as a function of temperature and liquid composition (pure water and NaCl or NaBr containing solutions) using the droplet train technique coupled to a mass spectrometer. The uptake kinetics are driven by the reactivity of these gases and, for both compounds, the uptake rates on pure water or on NaCl solutions (0.1M) are comparable. The uptake coefficient γ of ClONO2 does not depend on the temperature while that of BrONO2 increases slightly when the temperature is raised from 272 to 280K. For ClONO2 and BrONO2, the uptake rates increase on NaBr-doped droplets, enabling the estimation of the mass accommodation coefficient α. The corresponding values for α are 0.108±0.033 for ClONO2 and 0.063±0.021 for BrONO2 where the statistical errors correspond to ±2σ. The reactions of ClONO2 and BrONO2 on NaCl solutions lead respectively to the formation of Cl2 and BrCl. The uptake of ClONO2 on NaBr solutions generates BrCl as primary product, which in turn can react with NaBr to produce Br2. As expected, the only product of BrONO2 reaction on NaBr solution is Br2.

Abstract

South African agricultural residues have been converted into carbonaceous adsorbents using a one-step process, namely, vacuum pyrolysis. Their adsorptive capacities were characterized through Methylene Blue (MB) adsorption, in order to determine their possible use as adsorbents in addition to their use as biochar for soil amendment and as a fuel for coal replacement. Although the application of the vacuum during the pyrolysis prevented the devolatilized inorganics to affect pyrolysis yields, the role of the retained inorganics on the adsorptive capacity of biochars was demonstrated. The plant-based biochars displayed a low adsorptive capacity and a complex adsorption process, which could not be described by any of the ideal Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms models. However the kinetics of the sorption process were found to follow a pseudo-second order rate law. The kinetic rate of the initial adsorption stage was found to be a function of the surface density charge of plant-based biochars, indicating the key role of electrostatic driving forces between the MB cations and hydroxyl groups.

Abstract

International audience; Surface sediments from the Huveaune River were analyzed for n-alkanes, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), organochlorine and organophosphorous pesticides (OCs and OPs) by using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Concentrations of total alkanes ranged from 184 to 26,780 mu g.kg(-1) sediment dry weight (dw) with a mean concentration of 6126 +/- 8006 mu g-kg(-1) dw, concentrations of total PAHs ranged from 572 to 4235 mu g.kg(-1) dw with a mean concentration of 1966 +/- 1104 mu g.kg(-1) dw, concentrations of total PCB ranged from 2.8 to 435 mu g.kg(-1) dw with a mean concentration of 148 164 mu g.kg(-1) dw and concentrations of total pesticides ranged from 0.07 to 1.25 mu g.kg(-1) dw with a mean concentration of 1.23 +/- 1.29 mu g.kg(-1) dw. The spatial distribution of POPs reveals that pollutant concentration is relatively higher at the mouth of the river. The molecular indices of specific n-alkanes (CPI, NAR and TAR) and molecular indices of PAHs (Ant/(Ant + Phe), Fl/(Fl + Pyr), BaA/(BaA + Chry), IPyr/(Ipyr + BghiP)) were calculated to evaluate the possible sources of hydrocarbons. These molecular indices suggest mainly pyrolytic inputs which are markedly biogenic. All contaminant levels were also compared with Sediments Quality Guidelines (SQG) showing that the contamination levels in all stations were most of the time lower than their respective SQG. While, for PCBs, five stations (H5, F16,H7, HE and H9) were higher than their effect range median (ERM) values which may indicate high potential toxicity of the sediment with probable adverse effects to the living biota. Abstract

6th International Symposium on Aerogels (ISA-6) Albuquerque, New Mexico, October 08-11, 2000; International audience; Recent investigations have shown that the structure of organic aerogels can be significantly modified by changing the precursors, the solvent and the nature of the catalyst involved in the sol-gel reaction. It is therefore highly desirable to investigate the sol-gel mechanism. For this purpose, dynamic light scattering (DLS) measurements have been performed at different stages of the reaction for base- or acid-catalyzed gelation of resorcinol-formaldehyde (RF) using water or acetone as solvents. The structure of aged gels was investigated by small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and compared to that of the aerogels obtained after exchange of solvent by supercritical CO2 and drying of the aged gels. It is shown that acid-catalyzed gelation of RF in acetone can be described by percolation, which explains that this series of aerogels consists of mass fractal aggregates (Dm = 2.5). The partial collapse of this polymeric gel yielding colloidal particles in the aerogel can be attributed to deswelling in supercritical CO2. DLS indicates that gelation of RF with a base catalyst yields a colloidal gel whose structure remains practically unchanged in the aerogel, as shown by SAXS.

Abstract

International audience; The paper describes the fast pyrolysis conversion of lignocellulosic materials inside a bubbling fluidizedbed. The impact of biopolymers distribution in the biomass feed, namely hemicelluloses, cellulose, andlignin, on the yields and properties of pyrolytic bio-oils and chars was investigated.Although it is not possible to deconvoluate chemical phenomena from transfer phenomena using bubblingfluidized bed reactors, the key role of hemicelluloses in biomass feedstocks was illustrated by (i) itsinfluence on the production of pyrolytic water, (ii) its impact on the production of organics, apparentlydue to its bonding relationship with the lignin and (iii) its ability to inhibit the development of charsporosity, while the cellulose appeared to be the precursor for the microporous character of the biochars.These results are of interest in the selection of suitable feedstocks aimed at producing bio-oil and char asfuels and soil amendment, respectively.

Abstract

International audience; The adsorption of CO on a 4.7% Cu/Al2O3 catalyst either reduced or oxidized is studied using the FTIR spectra recorded at adsorption temperatures Ta in the range 298-740 K and with two constant partial pressures Pa (10 3 and 10 4 Pa). On the reduced solid and at Ta = 300 K a single IR band is detected at 2092 cm-1 ascribed to a linear CO species (denoted by L0) on Cu particles. The FTIR spectra lead to the determination of the evolution of the coverage of the L0 species with Ta for the two CO pressures. In the temperature range 380 K > Ta > 480 K, the curves = f(Ta) for the two CO pressures are in very good agreement with Temkin's adsorption model. Moreover, it is shown that, in the range 300-600 K, the curves are in agreement with an adsorption model considering (a) an immobile adsorbed species and (b) a linear decrease in the heat of adsorption with the coverage in the range 0-1. This leads to the determination of the heat of adsorption E , at various coverages from E0 = 82 kJ/mol at = 0 to E1 = 57 kJ/mol at = 1. It is shown that these values are similar to those obtained using the Clausius-Clapeyron equation. On the oxidized Cu/Al2O3 catalyst, an IR band is detected at 2120 cm-1 at 300 K. Its intensity increases either with time on stream in 1% CO/He or with increase in Ta. This IR band is ascribed to a linear CO species (denoted by L1) on Cu + sites and the increase in its intensity is assigned to the reduction of the copper oxide surface. The maximum in the superficial concentration of the Cu + sites is obtained after reduction in 1% CO/He at 473 K. This allows the determination of the heats of adsorption of L1 species at various coverages which linearly vary with from E'0 = 115 kJ/mol at = 0 to E'1 = 58 kJ/mol at = 1. The two L species are present simultaneously on the surface for an incomplete reduction of the solid, and it is shown that this does not significantly affect the heats of adsorption of the two adsorbed species. Moreover, the aging of the reduced catalyst has no effect on the heats of adsorption of the L0 and L1 species but leads to the detection of a new IR band at 2003 cm-1 ascribed to a bridged CO species on Cu sites. The heat of adsorption of this species is strongly higher than those of the two L species varying with the coverage from 130 kJ/mol at = 0 to 78 kJ/mol at = 1. Finally, it is shown that the heats of adsorption of the L0 and L1 species are in accord with the literature data on the stability of the two adsorbed species in the course of a desorption at room temperature.

Abstract

International audience; SnO2-based sensors present strong interactions with NOx-containing atmospheres. For this reason, it is fundamental to identify the nature of the adsorbed species resulting from the interaction of NO and NO2 with the tin oxide surface. This aspect has been studied in literature by Temperature Programmed Desorption (TPD). To state more precisely structures of adsorbed species, we link TPD with Diffuse Reflectance Fourier Transform Spectroscopy (DRIFTS). Concerning NO2 adsorption, DRIFTS experiments indicate the formation of monodentate nitrato species at room temperature. By increasing the temperature, a conversion of adsorbed species is observed. The nature of surface groups is discussed. In the presence of hydroxyl groups (two different OH groups are evidenced), the formation of hydrogeno nitrates is detected.

Abstract

International audience; This paper investigates the non-isothermal thermokinetics of the co-pyrolysis of sugarcane bagasse and cornresidue blended with coal. The individual devolatilization behaviour of each of the fuels obtained separatelywas compared with the behaviour of the biomass blends with coal at various mix ratios. Possible synergisticbehaviour that points to the existence of chemical interactions during pyrolysis between the coal and biomassfractions of the blends could thus be quantified. Synergistic interactions in the blends resulted in higherthan expected volatile yields. The interactions occurred between 300 °C and 500 °C, corresponding to the endof biomass devolatilization and the start of coal decomposition. Isoconversional kinetic analysis revealed thatapparent activation energy values varied between 165–180, 162–190, 160–175, and 225–260 kJ mol−1 forsugarcane bagasse, corn cobs, corn stover, and coal in the 0.1 to 0.8 conversion range. A comparison ofE(α) for single fuels and coal-biomass blends gave further evidence of synergistic behaviour as demonstratedby larger variation in E(α) during the decomposition of the blends, compared to the individual fuels.

Abstract

International audience; The distribution of products from the slow heating rate pyrolysis of coal, corn residues (cobs and stover),sugarcane bagasse and their blends were investigated by slow pressurized pyrolysis in a packed bedreactor. A factorial experimental design was implemented to establish the relative significance of coal–biomass mix ratio, temperature and pressure on product distribution. Results showed that the yieldand composition of tar and other volatile products were mostly influenced by mix ratio, while temperatureand pressure had a low to negligible significance under the range of conditions investigated. Analysisof the composition of condensates and gas products obtained showed that there was significant synergyor chemical interactions in the vapor phase during co-pyrolysis of coal and biomass. However, the interactionsdid not significantly affect the relative distribution of the lumped solid, liquid and gas productsobtained from the blends, beyond what would be expected assuming additive behavior from the contributingfuels.

Abstract

International audience; The potential of vacuum pyrolysis to convert sugar cane bagasse into char materials for wastewatertreatment and soil amendment is the focus of this research paper. Vacuum pyrolysis produces bothbio-oil and char in similar quantities. Vacuum pyrolysis has the potential to produce high quality charsfor wastewater treatment and soil amendment directly during the conversion process, with no furtherupgrading required. In the present study, chars with the required porous structure was obtained directlyfrom the vacuum pyrolysis process, making it very efficient as adsorbent both in terms of methylene blue(MB) adsorption with a N2-BET surface area of 418 m2 g−1. Further steam activation of the chars benefitedthe development of meso- and macroporosity, although this upgrading step was not essential to achievethe required performance of char as an MB adsorbent. The development of large pores during the vacuumpyrolysis favored physisorption of MB, rather than chemisorption. The chemical nature of the vacuumpyrolysis char resulted in a slightly acidic surface (pH 6.56). The biochar from vacuum pyrolysis can beconsidered as a highly beneficial soil amendment, as it would enhance soil nutrient and water holdingcapacity, due to its high cation exchange capacity (122 cmolc kg−1) and high surface area. It is also a goodsource of beneficial plant macro- and micronutrients and contains negligible levels of toxic elements.

Abstract

International audience; The characterization of char obtained from the vacuum pyrolysis (8 kPa abs, 460 °C, 18 °C/min) of sugar canebagasse followed by steam gasification (60 wt % of steam, 700−900 °C) was studied. The influence of different chemicalpretreatments prior to pyrolysis (acetone, ethanol, HNO3 and HF) on the ash content, the pore structure, and chemicalcomposition of resulting chars and activated carbons were investigated. Changes in the pore structure were observed during thepyrolysis process and the steam gasification, namely, the development of a channel network and the increase of meso- andmacroporosity distributions, respectively. These porous changes affect the pyrolytic yields. Clear influences of the surface areaand ash content on the pyrolytic water yields and the inorganic devolatilization effect on the meso- and macropore distributionsof chars were shown. Furthermore, the structural reorganization of chars obtained during the vacuum pyrolysis of HF andsolvent-leached bagasse was beneficial to their reactivity toward steam gasification.

Abstract

International audience; The physico-chemical properties of biochars from the vacuum pyrolysis of black wattle and vineyardannual prunings were investigated for their potential as soil amendments and compared to biocharfrom sugarcane bagasse. Biochar from sugar cane bagasse seems to be a promising sorbent and soilconditioner due to its high surface area, high surface acidity, and microporous structure. This biochar canbe applied to a wide pH range of soils for enhancing nutrient and water retention. On the other hand, thebiochars from black wattle and vineyard possessing high concentrations of aromatic carbon, nutrients,and alkalinity are potential soil amendment agents. Black wattle biochar is more beneficial comparedto biochar from vineyard due to its higher surface area, microporosity, and cation exchange capacity.Therefore, this study recommends the utilization of biochars from black wattle as soil amendment agentsespecially in subtropical regions.

Abstract

Experimental results for slow and vacuum pyrolysis of sugar cane bagasse, in the same reactor allowing the comparison of these two processes, are reported. The experimental results showed that vacuum pyrolysis leads to a higher BET specific surface area whereas slow pyrolysis seemed to favour the HHV of charcoal. Detailed yields of products are presented and the influence of temperature and heating rate were studied using a design of experiments and an ANOVA analysis. From the results the optimum experimental conditions to maximise the yields of char and bio-oil products, as well as their heating value and specific surface area characteristics, were established. The optimal yields of bio-oil for vacuum pyrolysis were obtained at 400–500 °C and a heating rate of 15–24 °C min −1 , and for char the corresponding values are 340–350 °C and 18–24 °C min −1 . Slow pyrolysis produced the highest char yield. The optimal ranges of temperature and heating rate differ from that of vacuum pyrolysis mainly due to the short residence time of the vapours in the case of vacuum pyrolysis. Optimum conditions for bio-oil and char yields did not correspond with conditions to optimize the BET surface and HHV for chars, and to minimize the water content of the products.

Abstract

A layer of macrocyclic calix[4]arene derivatives has been grafted on the internal surface of the mesochannels of the ordered mesoporous SBA-15 to develop highly efficient trap for heavy transition metal (HTM) ions. To ensure the successful anchoring of calix[4]arene derivatives on the surface of SBA-15, two different types of calix[4]arene derivatives, one with one trimethoxysilane functional group and another with two trimethoxysilane functional groups have been explored. XRD, N2 adsorption and TEM results provide strong evidence that the mesoporous structure of the supporting materials retain their long range ordering throughout the grafting process. Solid-state NMR, TG and FT-IR spectroscopy indicate that both types of calix[4]arene derivatives can be well-anchored on the surface of the wall of SBA-15. Calix[4]arene derivative with only one trimethoxysilane functional group showed high grafting efficiency compared to that with two trimethoxysilane functional groups due to the intramolecular and intermolecular polycondensation between two trimethoxysilane functional groups. The HTM ions extraction capacity in aqueous solution of macrocycle functionalized SBA-15 nanohybrides for a series of HTM ions has been studied. The obtained materials demonstrated very high HTM ions extraction capacity up to 96% for Pb2+ in aqueous solution.

Abstract

International audience; Biomass from three invasive plant species of the Western Karoo region in South Africa, namely Kraalbos,Schotzbos and Asbos, was treated by vacuum pyrolysis. The influence of temperature, pyrolysis time,pressure and initial moisture content on the bio-oil and charcoal yields were investigated. Asbos withthe largest ash content, 19.9 wt.%, gave chars with an ash content between 40 wt.% and 44 wt.% makingit difficult to use commercially. Vacuum pyrolysis of Kraalbos resulted in producing a biochar with aHHV of 23.0–25.5 MJ/kg and an ash content of 13–19 wt.% which compared favourable with commercialcharcoal. The bio-oils from both Kraalbos and Schotzbos showed promise as potential heating oilwith a HHV of 21.6–26.9 MJ/kg. The tarry phase contained a number of phenolic compounds that can beseparated and shows promise as a feedstock for upgrading. Finally, ageing which acts on the lignocellulosicstructure of biomasses decreased the charcoal and oil yields from the vacuum pyrolysis of intruderplants.

Abstract

The synthesis and self-assembled monolayer (SAM) formation of a calix[4]crown-5 derivative are reported. Several techniques, including electrochemistry, atomic force microscopy (AFM), Time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) and contact angle measurements have been applied to characterise the monolayer film designed for chemical sensor applications. The recognition properties of this SAM for metal cations has been investigated using impedance spectroscopy (IS) showing an electrochemical response proportional to calcium ion concentration in the range from 10(-7) M to 10(-2) M. This response is related to microscopic changes at the gold surface induced by selective binding by the immobilised calixarene.

Abstract

International audience; A new class of calix[4]arene derivatives bearing one or two nitrone groups on the upper rim has been synthesized using the oxidation of chiral imines with hydrogen peroxide. The imine intermediates were obtained via amination of the diformyl derivative. The 1H NMR spectra and X-ray data indicated a 1,3-disubstituted cone conformation for the imine derivatives and the existence of a single (E,E) isomer. The structural identity of the nitrone derivatives was confirmed from NMR, IR and ES-MS data. Both mono and dinitrone calix[4]arenes were in E configuration.

Abstract

International audience; The development of photocatalysis processes offers a significant number of perspectives especially in gaseous phase depollution. It is proved that the photo-oxidizing properties of photocatalyst (TiO2) activated by UV plays an important role in the degradation of volatile organic compounds (VOC). Heterogeneous photocatalysis is based on the absorption of UV radiations by TiO2. This phenomenon leads to the degradation and the oxidation of the compounds, according to a mechanism that associates the pollutant's adsorption on the photocatalyst and radical degradation reactions. The main objective of the study is the understanding of the TiO2-photocatalysis phenomenon including gaseous and adsorbed phase mechanisms. Results obtained with three different apparatus are compared; gaseous phases are analysed and mechanisms at the gaseous phase/photocatalyst interface are identified. This study leads to improve understanding of various mechanisms during pollutant photodegradation: adsorption of pollutants on TiO2 first takes place, then desorption and/or photodegradation, and finally, desorption of degradation products on TiO2. The association of analytical methods and different processes makes the determination of all parameters that affect the photocatalytic process possible. Mastering these parameters is fundamental for the design and construction of industrial size reactors that aim to purify the atmosphere.

Abstract

International audience; A sensing material based on calix[4]arene molecules (Azo-C[4]) dispersed in a conjugated polymer (MEHPPV) is deposited by spin coating onto a transparent conducting substrate (ITO) to fabricate new chemical sensors. The electrochemical properties of the sensor are investigated by impedance spectroscopy. Transfer and ion diffusion processes of metal cations (Cu2+, Eu3+) in the Azo-C[4]-MEHPPV membranes are studied. The calixarene molecule behaviour into the polymer membranes is characterised by impedance spectroscopy showing the cation complexation by both, Azo-calix[4]arene and MEHPPV, components of the membrane. The differences in selectivity are found to be represented by variations in the bulk resistance of the membrane (Rm) and in the charge transfer resistance (Rtc) of the interface. The impedance behaviour of the Azo-C[4]-MEHPPV electrodes is modelled by an equivalent electrical circuit. Optical excitation tests of these membranes show that the sensing activity of the calixarene molecules entrapped in the polymer matrix is preserved.

Abstract

The complexation of noble metal chloro complexes with thiacalix[4]arene derivatives bearing or not bearing functional groups was studied by liquid–liquid extraction. Among the four tested thiacalixarenes dissolved in chloroform, it was found that the derivative bearing amide groups (macrocycle 1 ) effectively extracted gold, palladium and platinum from chloride aqueous media via an ion-exchange mechanism, and its affinity was ranked according to Au > Pd > Pt. Moreover, the thiacalix[4]arene (macrocycle 4 ) selectively extracted palladium. In all cases, a solution of 0.5 M thiourea in 1 M HCl effectively eluted the extracted metals. Based on these results, different membrane systems (supported liquid membranes and polymer plasticized membranes) were designed for the selective transport of Au(III) and Pd(II). A new solid phase extraction (SPE) support was also prepared by adsorption of macrocycle 1 or 4 onto commercially available supports. It was found that the extraction ability of these supports towards noble metals was markedly enhanced, showing higher affinity for gold(III) and palladium(II) due to the presence of thiacalixarenes.
