1. Trophic position increases with thermocline depth in yellowfin and bigeye tuna across the Western and Central Pacific Ocean

Abstract: International audience; Estimates of trophic position are used to validate ecosystem models and understand food web structure. A consumer's trophic position can be estimated by the stable nitrogen isotope values (delta N-15) of its tissue, once the baseline isotopic variability has been accounted for. Our study established the first data-driven baseline delta N-15 isoscape for the Western and Central Pacific Ocean using particulate organic matter. Bulk delta N-15 analysis on 1039 muscle tissue of bigeye and yellowfin tuna were conducted together with amino acid compound-specific delta N-15 analysis (AA-CSIA) on a subset of 21 samples. Both particulate organic matter and tuna bulk delta N-15 values varied by more than 10 parts per thousand across the study area. Fine-scaled trophic position maps were constructed and revealed higher tuna trophic position (by similar to 1) in the southern latitudes compared to the equator. AA-CSIA confirmed these spatial patterns for bigeye and, to a lesser extent, yellowfin tuna. Using generalized additive models, spatial variations of tuna trophic positions were mainly related to the depth of the 20 degrees C isotherm, a proxy for the thermocline behavior, with higher tuna trophic position estimates at greater thermocline depths. We hypothesized that a deeper thermocline would increase tuna vertical habitat and access to mesopelagic prey of higher trophic position. Archival tagging data further suggested that the vertical habitat of bigeye tuna was deeper in the southern latitudes than at the equator. These results suggest the importance of thermocline depth in influencing tropical tuna diet, which affects their vulnerability to fisheries, and may be altered by climate change.

Abstract: International audience; : New Caledonia is a remote archipelago of the South-West Pacific, whose flora is rich, distinctive, and disharmonic. The interest of botanists has long been attracted by the spatio-temporal origin of this flora, but little attention has been paid to the modes of colonization and the diversification processes that have led to the archipelago's modern flora. To date, no explosive plant radiation has yet been highlighted for New Caledonia. A dated phylogenetic framework on the second richest New Caledonian genus - Psychotria s.l. and its allied genera (tribes Psychotrieae and Palicoureeae, Rubiaceae; ca. 85 species) - is provided in this study to explore its patterns of colonization and diversification in the archipelago. This study is based on a comprehensive species sampling, two nuclear and four plastid loci. Results show that New Caledonia was colonized four times by Psychotria and its allied genera during the Neogene long after its mid-Eocene re-emergence from the sea. The Pacific clade of Psychotrieae, one of the largest plant diversifications in the Pacific islands and the Indo-Pacific region, is absent from New Caledonia, possibly due to niche competition. Although the four lineages colonized New Caledonia relatively simultaneously during the Neogene, they express different evolutionary histories, as revealed by unevenness in species richness and net diversification rates. The genus Geophila has not diversified on New Caledonia, as a non-endemic single species has been documented in the archipelago. The genus Margaritopsis had a moderate level of diversification (four species) similar to that on other Pacific islands. The Psychotria clade NC1 appears to be a relictual lineage, which probably underwent a drastic extinction, with a narrow ecological habitat and dispersal limitations. The Psychotria clade NC2 is the largest and youngest New Caledonian plant radiation, and has undergone the fastest recorded diversification of any endemic lineage in the archipelago, and could be the result of a 'non-adaptive radiation', originating from Australian rainforests.

Abstract: Este artículo contiene 17 páginas, 8 figuras, 5 tablas., Complex histories of chronic and acute sea surface temperature (SST) stresses are expected to trigger taxon- and location-specific responses that will ultimately lead to novel coral communities. The 2016 El Niño-Southern Oscillation provided an opportunity to examine largescale and recent environmental histories on emerging patterns in 226 coral communities distributed across 12 countries from East Africa to Fiji. Six main coral communities were identified that largely varied across a gradient of Acropora to massive Porites dominance. Bleaching intensity was taxon-specific and was associated with complex interactions among the 20 environmental variables that we examined. Coral community structure was better aligned with the historical temperature patterns between 1985 and 2015 than the 2016 extreme temperature event. Additionally, bleaching responses observed during 2016 differed from historical reports during past warm years. Consequently, coral communities present in 2016 are likely to have been reorganized by both long-term community change and acclimation mechanisms. For example, less disturbed sites with cooler baseline temperatures, higher mean historical SST background variability, and infrequent extreme warm temperature stresses were associated with Acropora-dominated communities, while more disturbed sites with lower historical SST background variability and frequent acute warm stress were dominated by stress-resistant massive Porites corals. Overall, the combination of taxon-specific responses, community-level reorganization over time, geographic variation, and multiple environmental stressors suggest complex responses and a diversity of future coral communities that can help contextualize management priorities and activities., T.R.M. and N.A.M. received support from the John D. and Catherine T. Abstract: In seawater, the application of a cathodic current in a metallic structure induces the formation of a calcareous deposit formed by co-precipitation of CaCO3 and Mg(OH)2 on the metal surface. A previous study proved that this electrochemical technique is convincing as a remediation tool for dissolved nickel in seawater and that it is trapped as nickel hydroxide in the deposit. Here, the precipitation of a carbonate form with lead is studied. Pb2+ precipitation in calcareous deposit was investigated with a galvanized steel electrode by doping artificial seawater with PbCl2. Results show for the first time the presence of Pb incorporated in its carbonate form in the calcareous deposit. Trapped Pb content increased with initial Pb content in seawater. Simultaneous doping with Ni and Pb revealed that Ni trapping was favoured by higher current densities while Pb trapping was favoured by lower current densities. Finally, preliminary in situ experiments were performed in an industrial bay and validated the incorporation in real conditions of contaminants by precipitation with the calcareous deposit The present work demonstrates that co-precipitation of contaminants under their hydroxide or carbonate form in a calcareous deposit is a promising clean-up device for remediation of contaminated seawater.

Abstract: Persuasive health messages sometimes induce resistance. This article explores the link between self-compassion and resistance to health messages that threaten autonomy.A pilot study (N = 100) tested whether threatening health messages versus non-threatening messages damage needs for autonomy, which translates into emotional resistance and behavioural intentions of resistance. The main study (N = 83) tested self-compassion and reactant traits as moderators of observable health-behaviour (soft drink consumption) faced with threatening messages versus non-threatening messages.The pilot study tested whether threatening health messages create resistance using self-reports of anger and resistant behavioural intentions. Observable health-behaviour (soft drink vs. water consumption) was measured in the main study.The pilot study showed that the perceived threat to autonomy, which was induced by threatening health messages about soft drink consumption, creates resistance (self-reports of anger and resistant behavioural intentions). The main study shows that the most self-compassionate people act in favour of the arguments of the threatening messages (drinking water rather than soft drinks), whereas the least self-compassionate do not.These innovative results are discussed in regard to the compliance role of self-compassion through self-regulatory functions.

Abstract: International audience; The stunningly increased resolution of the deep crustal levels in recent industrial seismic profiles acquired along most of the world's rifted margins leads to the unraveling of an unexpected variety of structures. It provides unprecedented access to the processes occurring in the middle and lower continental crust. We present a series of so far unreleased profiles that allows the identification of various rift-related geological processes such as crustal boudinage, ductile shear and low-angle detachment faulting, and a rifting history that differs from the classical models of oceanward-dipping normal faults. The lower crust in rifted margins appears much more intensely deformed than usually represented. At the foot of both magma-rich and magma-poor margins, we observe clear indications of ductile deformation of the deep continental crust along large-scale shallow dipping shear zones. These shear zones generally show a top-to-the-continent sense of shear consistent with the activity of Continentward Dipping Normal Faults (CDNF) observed in the upper crust. This pattern is responsible for a migration of the deformation and associated sedimentation and/or volcanic activity toward the ocean. We discuss the origin of these CDNF and investigate their implications and the effect of sediment thermal blanketing on crustal rheology. In some cases, low-angle shear zones define an anastomosed pattern that delineates boudin-like structures. The maximum deformation is localized in the inter-boudin areas. The upper crust is intensely boudinaged and the highly deformed lower crust fills the inter-boudins underneath. The boudinage pattern controls the position and dip of upper crustal normal faults. We present some of the most striking examples from the margins of Uruguay, West Africa, South China Sea and Barents Sea, and discuss their implications for the time-temperature history of the margins.

Abstract: The Yili Block represents the easternmost segment of the Kazakhstan–Yili microcontinent. Late Paleozoic magmatic rocks are extensively exposed in the Yili Block and are essential in understanding the tectonic development of the SW Central Asia Orogenic Belt (CAOB). We conducted field investigations, zircon U–Pb dating, whole-rock geochemical and Sr–Nd isotopic studies on the magmatic rocks from the Wusun Range, southern Yili Block. The Late Paleozoic volcanic and plutonic rocks of the Wusun Range show geochemical features consistent with that of calc-alkaline series, and they have positive eNd(t) values (0.9 to 5.6), Neo- to Mesoproterozoic single-stage Nd model ages (0.80 ~ 1.33 Ga), and variable initial 87Sr/86Sr ratios (0.7041–0.7059), suggesting that these magmatic rocks are likely derived from partial melting of a moderately depleted mantle wedge with minor involvement of a Precambrian continental crust. These new data, combined with previously published results put constraints on the Late Paleozoic magmatic and geodynamic evolution of the Balkhash–Yili active continental margin. The Late Paleozoic arc magmatism initiated from ~ 386 Ma along the northern Yili Block, and migrated southward to have occurred since ~ 340 Ma along its southern margin. Subsequently, the arc-related magmatism moved back northward and terminated at 310 Ma in the south and at ~ 295 Ma in the north. The OIB-like geochemical features of some volcanic rocks indicate incipient marginal rifting occurred along the southern Yili Block during Late Carboniferous. Taking into account the regional structural and tectonic data, the Carboniferous Yili magmatic arc may be laterally correlated with the Balkhash–Yili active margin of the Kazakhstan microcontinent, which was likely resulted from the southward subduction of the Junggar – North Tianshan Ocean.

Abstract: International audience; 22 Flavokawain derivatives (FKd) were obtained by one step syntheses in order to conduct a SAR study to understand the structural requirements for optimum and selective cytotoxicity. FKd and natural flavokawains A and B found into kava, a South Pacific traditional beverage, were evaluated against nine cancer and one healthy cell lines. The targeted cell cycle phases as well as the effects on the induction of apoptosis and cell cycle protein levels were investigated. Therapeutic improvements (more activity and selectivity) were achieved with FKd compared to natural flavokawains and notably with the 2',3,4',6'-tetramethoxychalcone (FKd 19). FKd induced a G1/S arrest on p53 wild-type cells and an M arrest on p53 mutant-type, via the up-regulation of p21 and cyclin B1 proteins, followed by apoptosis. Moreover, FKd exhibited a 24h-effect on Akt/mTor normal cells versus a 48h-effect on Akt/mTor up-regulated cells. The SAR study resulted in the conclusion that trimethoxy A-ring allowed the best compromise between cytotoxicity and selectivity, as well as the substitution of the meta position on the B-ring and the use of halogens substituents.

Abstract: Discovering patterns in dynamic attributed graphs allows to capture how attribute values and graph structures changes over time. This allows to understand how a graph has evolved and may change in the future, to support decision-making. But an important limitation of current studies is that they mainly select patterns based on their frequency. Thus, they may find many frequent but weakly correlated patterns. To discover strongly correlated patterns, this paper proposes a novel significance measure named Sequence Virtual Growth Rate. It allows evaluating if a pattern represents entities that are correlated in terms of their proximity in a graph over time. Based on this measure a novel type of graph patterns is defined called Significant Trend Sequence. To efficiently mine these patterns, an algorithm named TSeqMiner is proposed, which relies on a novel upper bound and pruning strategy to reduce the search space. Experiments show that the algorithm is efficient and can identify interesting patterns in social network and spatio-temporal data.

Abstract: International audience; In two companion papers, we report the detailed geological and mineralogical study of two emblematic serpentinized ultramafic bodies of the western North Pyrenean Zone (NPZ), the Urdach massif (this paper) and the Saraillé massif (paper 2). The peridotites have been exhumed to lower crustal levels during the Cretaceous rifting period in the future NPZ. They are associated with Mesozoic pre-rift metamorphic sediments and small units of thinned Paleozoic basement that were deformed during the mantle exhumation event. Based on detailed geological cross-sections and microprobe mineralogical analyses, we describe the lithology of the two major extensional fault zones that accommodated: (i) the progressive exhumation of the lherzolites along the Cretaceous basin axis; (ii) the lateral extraction of the continental crust beneath the rift shoulders and; (iii) the decoupling of the pre-rift cover along the Upper Triassic (Keuper) evaporites and clays, allowing its gliding and conservation in the basin center. These two fault zones are the (lower) crust-mantle detachment and the (upper) cover décollement located respectively at the crust-mantle boundary and at the base of the detached pre-rift cover. The Urdach peridotites were exposed to the seafloor during the Late Albian and underwent local pervasive carbonation and crystallization of calcite in a network of orthogonal veins (ophicalcites). The carbonated serpentinized peridotites were partly covered by debris-flows carrying fragments of both the ultramafics and Paleozoic crustal rocks now forming the polymictic Urdach breccia. The mantle rocks are involved in a Pyrenean overturned fold together with thin units of crustal mylonites. Continent-derived and mantle-derived fluids that circulated along the Urdach crust-mantle detachment led to the crystallization of abundant metasomatic rocks containing quartz, calcite, Cr-rich chlorites, Cr-rich white micas and pyrite. Two samples of metasomatized material from the crust-mantle detachment yielded in situ zircon U/Pb ages of 112.9 ± 1.6 Ma and 109.4 ± 1.2 Ma, thus confirming the Late Albian age of the metasomatic event. The cover décollement is a 30-m thick fault zone which also includes metasomatic rocks of greenschist facies, such as serpentine-calcite association and listvenites, indicating large-scale fluid-rock interactions implying both ultramafic and continental material. The lowermost pre-rift cover is generally missing along the cover décollement due to tectonic disruption during mantle exhumation and continental crust elision. Locally, metasomatized and strongly tectonized Triassic remnants are found as witnesses of the sole at the base of the detached pre-rift cover. We also report the discovery of a spherulitic alkaline lava flow emplaced over the exhumed mantle. These data collectively allow to propose a reconstruction of the architecture and fluid-rock interaction history of the distal domain of the upper Cretaceous northern Iberia margin now inverted in the NPZ.; Dans deux articles compagnons, nous décrivons la géologie et la minéralogie de deux massifs de péridotites serpentinisées représentatifs de la Zone Nord-Pyrénéenne (ZNP) occidentale, le massif d’Urdach (cet article) et le massif du Saraillé (article 2). Les péridotites ont été portées vers les niveaux crustaux supérieurs durant l’épisode de rifting pyrénéen crétacé qui a affecté la future ZNP. Elles sont associées à des sédiments métamorphiques pré-rift et à des lambeaux de croûte Paléozoïque déformée durant l’exhumation. En s’appuyant sur des descriptions de coupes géologiques et des analyses de minéraux à la microsonde, nous précisons la lithologie de deux failles extensives majeures qui ont permis : (i) la remontée des lherzolites sous l’axe du bassin ; (ii) l’extraction latérale de la croûte continentale sous les bordures du rift et ; (iii) le découplage et le glissement de la couverture pré-rift le long des évaporites et argiles du Keuper. Ces deux zones de faille sont le détachement croûte-manteau (inférieur) et le décollement de couverture (supérieur) situés respectivement à la limite croûte-manteau et à la base de de la série pré-rift glissée. Les péridotites d’Urdach ont été mises à l’affleurement sur le fond marin où elles ont subi une carbonatation interne partielle accompagnée de cristallisation de calcite dans un réseau de veines orthogonales (ophicalcites). Les serpentinites ont été recouvertes partiellement par la brèche d’Urdach formée d’écoulements de débris ultramafiques et paléozoïques. Les roches du manteau sont engagées avec de minces lentilles de mylonites crustales dans un pli deversé vers l’ouest. Des fluides d’origine mantellique et continentale ont circulé le long du détachement croûte-manteau et ont permis la cristallisation de roches métasomatiques renfermant : quartz, calcite, chlorite et mica riches en Cr, et pyrite. Deux échantillons de ces roches métasomatiques ont fourni des âges U/Pb in situ sur zircons de 112.9 ± 1.6 Ma et 109.4 ± 1.2 Ma confirmant ainsi l’âge Albien supérieur de cet événement métasomatique. Le décollement de couverture renferme aussi des roches métasomatiques (associations calcite-serpentine et listvénites), témoignant d’échanges fluide-roche à grande échelle à partir de matériel mantellique et crustal. La base de la couverture pré-rift a subi une troncature basale lors de l’exhumation du manteau et des résidus triasiques très déformés sont présents à la base de la série pré-rift décollée. Nous avons également découvert une coulée de lave sphérulitique alcaline mise en place sur le manteau exhumé. Cet ensemble de données sur le massif d’Urdach permet de proposer une reconstitution au Crétacé supérieur de l’histoire des fluides et de l’architecture du domaine distal de la marge nord ibérique aujourd’hui inversée dans la ZNP.

Abstract: International audience; Although they are famous among Earth scientists, the Lherz peridotites are exposed within geological formations of the North Pyrenean Zone (NPZ) still lacking detailed investigations. Our study focuses on the metasediments of the Aulus basin hosting the Lherz peridotite body and associated ultramafic fragments of smaller size. The new data set comprises of structural analysis and detailed geological mapping of the massive Mesozoic marbles that form the prerift sequence typical of the NPZ and of the ultramafic-rich clastic breccia formations surrounding the peridotite bodies. The massive marbles display an evolution from hot and ductile to cold and brittle deformation, indicative of an exhumation process ending with the sedimentary reworking of both the deformed Mesozoic metasediments and the exhumed ultramafic rocks. Crystal Preferred Orientations (CPO) measured in the marbles support a deformation mechanism by dislocation creep of calcite, which is dominant between 400 8C and 600 8C; these deformation temperatures are within the range determined earlier by Clerc et al. (2015), using RSCM (Raman Spectroscopy of Carbonaceous Material) geothermometry. As a consequence, we better describe the transition from ductile to brittle deformation in the prerift marbles and clarify the origin of the syn-rift breccias. Due to continuous exhumation along detachments' faults, the brecciated metamorphic carbonates of the prerift NPZ sedimentary cover were passively uplifted towards shallower levels and progressively unroofed, while transported passively on the back of the exhumed ultramafic footwall. These results are consistent with the recent interpretations of the North Pyrenean peridotites as remnants of subcontinental mantle rocks exhumed within the pre-Pyrenean rift system. Abstract: Coral reefs are among the most species-rich and threatened ecosystems on Earth, yet the extent to which human stressors determine species occurrences, compared with biogeography or environmental conditions, remains largely unknown. With ever-increasing human-mediated disturbances on these ecosystems, an important question is not only how many species can inhabit local communities, but also which biological traits determine species that can persist (or not) above particular disturbance thresholds. Here we show that human pressure and seasonal climate variability are disproportionately and negatively associated with the occurrence of large-bodied and geographically small-ranging fishes within local coral reef communities. These species are 67% less likely to occur where human impact and temperature seasonality exceed critical thresholds, such as in the marine biodiversity hotspot: the Coral Triangle. Our results identify the most sensitive species and critical thresholds of human and climatic stressors, providing opportunity for targeted conservation intervention to prevent local extinctions., Knowing which species traits may confer resilience to human-mediated stressors will help predict future impacts on biodiversity. Here, Mellin et al. show that large bodied fish with small geographic ranges are disproportionately affected by the negative impacts of human disturbance and climate variability.

Abstract: International audience; Marine snakes represent the most speciose group of marine reptiles and are a significantcomponent of reef and coastal ecosystems in tropical oceans. Research on this grouphas historically been challenging due to the difficulty in capturing, handling, and keepingthese animals for field- and lab-based research. Inexplicable declines in marine snakepopulations across global hotspots have highlighted the lack of basic information onthis group and elevated multiple species as conservation priorities. With the increasedinterest in research on marine snakes, we conducted a systematic survey of experts toidentify twenty key questions that can direct future research. These questions are framedacross a wide array of scientific fields to produce much-needed information relevant tothe conservation and management of marine snakes.

Abstract: International audience; Volatile components of seven species of the Bazzanioideae sub-family (Lepidoziaceae) native to New Caledonia, including three endemic species (Bazzania marginata, Acromastigum caledonicum and A. tenax), were analyzed by GC-FID-MS in order to index these plants to known or new chemotypes. Detected volatile constituents in studied species were constituted mainly by sesquiterpene, as well as diterpene compounds. All so-established compositions cannot successfully index some of them to known chemotypes but afforded the discovery of new chemotypes such as cuparane/fusicoccane. The major component of B. francana was isolated and characterized as a new zierane-type sesquiterpene called ziera-12(13),10(14)-dien-5-ol (23). In addition, qualitative intraspecies variations of chemical composition were very important particularly for B. francana which possessed three clearly defined different compositions. We report here also the first phytochemical investigation of Acromastigum species. Moreover, crude diethyl ether extract of B. vitatta afforded a new bis(bibenzyl) called vittatin (51), for which a putative biosynthesis was suggested.

Abstract: International audience; We present here a number of geological observations in extensional contexts, either continental rifts or back-arcs, that show different situations of potential coupling between asthenospheric flow and crustal deformation. Several of these examples show a deformation distributed over hectometre to kilometre thick shear zones, accommodated by shallow dipping shear zones with a constant asymmetry over large distances. This is the case of the Mediterranean back-arc basins, such as the Aegean Sea, the northern Tyrrhenian Sea, the Alboran domain or the Gulf of Lion passive margin. Similar types of observation can be made on some of the South Atlantic volcanic passive margins and the Afar region, which were formed above a mantle plume. In all these examples the lithosphere is hot and the lithospheric mantle thin or possibly absent. We discuss these contexts and the main controlling parameters for this asymmetrical distributed deformation that implies a simple shear component at the scale of the lithosphere. These parameters include an original heterogeneity of the crust and lithosphere (tectonic heritage), lateral density gradients and contribution of the underlying asthenospheric flow through basal drag or basal push. We discuss the relations between the observed asymmetry and the direction and sense of the mantle flow underneath. The chosen examples suggest that two main mechanisms can explain the observed asymmetry: (1) shearing parallel to the Moho in the necking zone during rifting and (2) viscous coupling of asthenospheric flow and crustal deformation in back-arc basins and above plumes. Slipping along pre-existing heterogeneities seems a second-order phenomenon at lithospheric or crustal scale.

Abstract: International audience; The integration, accumulation and transfer of trace elements across the main tropic levels of many food webs are poorly documented. This is notably the case for the complex trophic webs of coral reef ecosystems. Our results concerning the south-west lagoon of New Caledonia show that both abiotic (i.e. sediments) and biotic (i.e. primary producers, consumers and predators) compartments are generally contaminated by trace elements. However, our analyses revealed specific contamination patterns from the sources of organic matter to predators. The trophic levels involved in the sedimentary benthic food web (S-BFW - based on the sedimentary organic matter) and to a lesser extent in the reef benthic food web (R-BFW - based on algal turf) were mainly contaminated by trace elements that originate from mining activities: Ni and associated trace elements (Co, Cr, Fe, and Mn) were preferentially integrated into these trophic structures. Trace elements linked to agro-industrial (As, Hg, and Zn) and urban (Ag, Cd, Cu, Pb, Se, and V) activities were also integrated into the S-BFW, but preferentially into the R-BFW, and to a lesser extent into the detrital benthic food web (D-BFW) supplied by sea-grass plants. Most of the trace elements were biodiminished with increasing trophic levels along trophic networks. However, a marked biomagnification was observed for Hg, and suspected for Se and Zn. These results provide important baseline information to better interpret trace element contamination in the different organisms and trophic levels in a highly diversified coral reef lagoon.

Abstract: Isolated from a New Caledonian collection of the poecilosclerid sponge Echinochalina bargibanti, arsenicin A (C3H6As4O3) was described as the first natural organic polyarsenic compound. Continuing on bioassay guided fractionation of the organic extracts of this sponge, we describe here the isolation and structural elucidation of the first sulfur-containing organic polyarsenicals ever found in nature. The novel metabolites, called arsenicin B and arsenicin C, are built on a noradamantane type framework and they further distinguish from the adamantane type framework of arsenicin A by a different heteroatom composition and by the presence of an unusual As-As bonding. Extensive 1D and 2D-NMR measurements, in combination with tandem APCI mass spectra, allowed to establish the structure of arsenicin B (C3H6As4S2) as 2. The scarcity of arsenicin C and and its intrinsic chemical instability, only allowed to collect partial spectral data which prevented the full structural definition. After extensive computational testing of several putative structures, structure 3 for arsenicin C (C3H6As4OS) was inferred by comparing experimental with DFT-calculated 1H and 13C NMR spectra. Finally, the absolute configuration of 2 and 3 were determined with a combined use of experimental and TD-DFT calculated ECD spectra and observed specific rotations. These findings pose great challenges for both the biosynthesis of these metabolites and the cycle of Arsenic in nature. Arsenicin B and arsenicin C showed strong antifungal and antibacterial activities, especially against S. aureus comparable to the antibiotic gentamycin.

Abstract: The degradation of coral reefs is widely reported, yet there is a poor understanding of the adaptability of reef fishes to cope with benthic change. We tested the effects of coral reef degradation on the feeding plasticity of four reef fish species. We used isotopic niche sizes and mean δ15N and δ13C values of each species in two coral reefs that differed in benthic condition. The species chosen have contrasting feeding strategies; Chaetodon lunulatus (corallivore), Chrysiptera rollandi (zooplanktivore), Halichoeres melanurus (invertivore) and Zebrasoma velifer (herbivore). We predicted that the corallivore would have a lower mean δ15N value and a smaller isotopic niche size in the degraded reef, that the herbivore and the invertivore might have a larger isotopic niche size and/or a different mean δ13C value, whereas the zooplanktivore might be indifferent since the species is not linked to coral degradation. Some results matched our predictions; C. lunulatus had a smaller niche size on the degraded reef, but no difference in mean δ15N and δ13C values, and H. melanurus displayed an increase in niche size and a lower mean δ15N value on the degraded reef. Some other results were contrary to our predictions; whereas Z. velifer and C. rollandi had smaller mean δ13C values but no difference in niche size. Our findings suggest there may be feeding plasticity to maintain a similar diet despite contrasting habitat characteristics, with different amplitude depending on species. Such findings suggest that certain species guilds would probably adapt to changes linked to habitat degradation.

Abstract: Nematodes belonging to the genus Anisakis are important parasites due to their abundance in seafood and health impacts on humans. In the present study Anisakis larvae were found in a number of uncommon hosts including the Grey petrel, Procellaria cinerea, the Little penguin, Eudyptula minor, Blue-lipped sea krait, Laticauda laticaudata and Spinner shark, Carcharhinus brevipinna. Morphological examination showed nematodes in these animals are Anisakis larval type I. Genetic characterisation suggested that the larva from one Grey petrel was Anisakis berlandi, whereas the other larvae from the second Grey petrel and from the little penguin were Anisakis pegreffii. A number of larvae found in Blue-lipped sea krait and Spinner shark were identified as Anisakis typica. This is the first report of infective stage of Anisakis larvae parasitising hosts other than teleost fish. Understanding of the extent of infection and the pathogenicity of anisakid nematodes in hosts found in the present study is important in the conservation studies and management plans of these hosts.

Abstract: International audience; Small action cameras have received interest for use in underwater videography because of their low-cost, standardised housing, widespread availability and small size. Here, we assess the capacity of GoPro action cameras to provide accurate stereo-measurements of fish in comparison to the Sony handheld cameras that have traditionally been used for this purpose. Standardised stereo-GoPro and Sony systems were employed to capture measurements of known-length targets in a pool to explore the influence of the type of camera, distance to camera rig, angle to the optical axis and target speed on measurement accuracy. The capacity to estimate fish length in situ was also compared by measuring the same fish on a coral reef with two baited remote underwater video systems, each fitted with both a GoPro and a Sony camera system. Pool trials indicated that the GoPros were generally less accurate than the Sonys. Accuracy decreased with increased angles and distance for both systems but remained reasonably low (< 7.5%) at 5 m distance and 25Â° angle for GoPros. Speed of target movement did not result in any consistent decrease in accuracy. In situ measurements revealed a strong correlation (R2 = 0.94) between Sony and GoPro length measurements of the same individual fish, with a slope not different from 1 and an intercept not different from 0, suggesting that GoPro measurement errors do not result in a consistent bias at the level of individual fish. Moreover, the investigation of kernel density functions of the length distribution of the entire fish assemblage indicated that difference in measurement accuracy becomes negligible for purposes of comparing population size structure. We suggest a measurement protocol for the use of GoPro stereo-camera systems that improves accuracy, where distance to target is limited to 5 m and angle to optical axis is restricted to 25Â°. For distances up to 7 m, angles should be restricted to 15Â°. This protocol supports the use of small action cameras such as the GoPro system, providing reductions in cost and increases in effective sampling efforts, compared with traditional rigs based on relatively expensive handheld cameras.

Abstract: Carbon budgets in mangrove forests are uncertain mainly due to the lack of data concerning carbon export in dissolved and gaseous forms. Temporal variability of in situ CO2 fluxes was investigated at the sediment–air interface in different seasons in different mangrove stands in a semi-arid climate. Fluxes were measured using dynamic closed incubation chambers (transparent and opaque) connected to an infra-red gas analyzer. Microclimatic conditions and chl-a contents of surface sediments were determined. Over all mangrove stands, CO2 fluxes on intact sediments were relatively low, ranging from − 3.93 to 8.85 mmolCO2·m− 2·h− 1 in the light and in the dark, respectively. Changes in the fluxes over time appeared to depend to a great extent on the development of the biofilm at the sediment surface. We suggest that in intact sediments and in the dark, CO2 fluxes measured at the sediment–air interface rather reflect the metabolism of benthic organisms than sediment respiration (heterotrophic and autotrophic). However, without the biofilm, sediment water content and air temperature were main drivers of seasonal differences in CO2 fluxes, and their influence differed depending on the intertidal location of the stand. After removal of the biofilm, Q10 values in the Avicennia and the Rhizophora stands were 1.84 and 2.1, respectively, revealing the sensitivity of mangrove sediments to an increase in temperature. This study provides evidence that, if the influence of the biofilm is not taken into account, the in situ CO2 emission data currently used to calculate the budget will lead to underestimation of CO2 production linked to heterotrophic respiration fueled by organic matter detritus from the mangrove.

Abstract: International audience; Six previously undescribed triterpenoid saponins and two previously undescribed norlupane triterpenes were isolated with five known saponins, three known lupane derivatives, 17,20-didehydro-20-deoxyjujubogenin, rutin, (±) 3α-O-β-d-glucopyranosyl-lyoniresinol, (±) 4-O-β-d-glucopyranosyl-maesopsin, three phenol glycosides, and uridine from the stems and bark of Jaffrea xerocarpa (Baill.) H. C. Hopkins & Pillon (= Basionym Alphitonia xerocarpus Baill.) (Rhamnaceae), an endemic tree of New Caledonia. The chemical structures of the purified compounds were identified by nuclear magnetic resonance and mass spectrometry. The isolated compounds were tested for their antioxidant, antityrosinase, antibacterial and cytotoxic activities. The aqueous methanol extract showed antioxidant activity (DPPH assay) due to the presence of rutin and other phenolic compounds. Three lupane triterpenes showed good cytotoxic activities against KB cells line (IC50 from 7.7 to 8.5 μM). The previously undescribed 2α-formyl-A(1)norlup-20(29)-en-28-oic acid showed antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus faecalis with both MIC values of 4 μg/mL.

Thermal advantages to melanism do not apply in aquatic snakes [4], but although turtle-headed seasnakes (Emydocephalus annulatus) are banded or blotched across a wide geographic range [5] (Figures 1A and 1B), most individuals are melanic in polluted inshore bays of the Pacific island of New Caledonia [4] (Figure 1C). Why has melanism evolved in these urban sites?Because trace elements bind to melanin, darker feathers enhance a bird’s ability to shed pollutants [6]. Reptiles in polluted habitats also accumulate trace elements, that are expelled when the skin is sloughed [7–11]. Might melanism enable snakes to rid themselves of harmful pollutants? We measured trace elements in sloughed skins of seasnakes from urban-industrial versus other areas, and in dark versus light skin. For the latter comparison we used data from laticaudine seasnakes (sea kraits Laticauda spp.), in which each individual is dark-and-light banded (Figure 2), facilitating comparisons between dark and light skin. As predicted, concentrations of trace elements were higher in snakes from urban-industrial areas, and higher in darker than paler skin (even within the same slough). The rate of excretion of trace elements is further enhanced by higher frequencies of sloughing in melanic than banded individuals, even within the same population, because of higher rates of algal settlement on darker skin. Thus, melanism of seasnakes in polluted sites may facilitate excretion of trace elements via sloughing.

Abstract: International audience; Sub-continental lithospheric mantle rocks are exhumed at the foot of magma-poor distal passive margins as aresponse to extreme stretching of the continental crust during plate separation. Remnants of the Northern Iberianpaleo-passive margin are now exposed in the North-Pyrenean Zone (NPZ) and represent field analogues to studythe processes of continental crust thinning and subcontinental mantle exhumation. The NPZ results from theinversion of basins opened between the Iberia and Europa plates during Albo-Cenomanian times. In the westernNPZ, the ‘Chaînons Béarnais’ ranges display a fold-and-thrust structure involving the Mesozoic sedimentarycover, decoupled from its continental basement and associated with peridotite bodies in tectonic contact withPalaeozoic basement lenses of small size. Continental extension developed under hot thermal conditions, asdemonstrated by the syn-metamorphic Cretaceous ductile deformation affecting both the crustal basement and theallochthonous Mesozoic cover.In this study, we present structural and geochemical data providing constraints to reconstruct the evolution ofthe northern Iberia paleo-margin. Field work confirms that the pre-rift Mesozoic cover is intimately associatedto mantle rocks and to thin tectonic lenses of crustal basement. It also shows that the pre-rift cover was detachedfrom its bedrock at the Keuper evaporites level and was welded to mantle rocks during their exhumation atthe foot of the hyper-extended margin. The crust/mantle detachment fault is a major shear zone characterizedby anastomosed shear bands defining a plurimetric phacoidal fabric at the top of the serpentinized mantle. Thedetachment is marked by a layer of metasomatic rocks, locally 20 meters thick, made of talc-chlorite-pyrite-richrocks that developped under greenschist facies conditions. Raman Spectroscopy on Carbonaceous Materials(RSCM), performed on the Mesozoic cover reveal that the entire sedimentary pile underwent temperatures rangingbetween 200C and 480C.We show that: (i) at the site of mantle rocks exhumation, the boudinaged pre-rift sediments have undergone drasticsyn-metamorphic thinning with the genesis of a S0/S1 foliation and, (ii) the Paleozoic basement has been ductilelydeformed, into thin tectonic lenses that remained welded to the exhumed mantle rocks. Therefore the overallcrustal rheology appears dominated by shallow levels having a ductile behavior. This rheology is related to thepresence of a thick pre- and syn-rift decoupled cover acting as an efficient thermal blanket. This new geologicaldata set highlights important characteristics of ductile-type hyper-extended passive margin that cannot be obtainedfrom the study of seismic lines. Finally, we stress that studying field analogues represents a major tool to betterunderstand the mechanisms of extreme crustal thinning associated with mantle exhumation and their structuralinheritance during tectonic inversion.

Abstract: There are few efficient, rapid and cheap methods to remove toxic metals from contaminated waters. Here we hypothesised that cathodic protection, an existing method used to control the corrosion of metallic structures, may trap toxic metals. Indeed, in seawater, the application of a cathodic current on a metallic structure induces the precipitation of limestone (CaCO3) and magnesium dihydroxyde (Mg(OH)2), thus forming a calcareous deposit on the metal surface. We therefore presumed that such calcareous deposit may trap metals dissolved in waters. Actually calcareous deposit formation has never been studied in the presence of dissolved metallic contaminants such as nickel. Here we tested ionic nickel (Ni2+) precipitation in calcareous deposit with a galvanized steel electrode by spiking artificial seawater with a NiCl2 salt during 7 days of applied current. We analysed deposit surface and cross section by µ-Raman spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with X-ray microanalysis. Ni concentration in the deposit was quantified by inductively coupled plasma analysis, after deposit dissolution in 60% HNO3. Results show that in 7 days up to 24% of nickel can be trapped in the calcareous deposit. Scanning electron microscopy reveals that Ni is trapped under a pure CaCO3 layer of aragonite. Raman spectra show that nickel is incorporated as nickel dihydroxyde (Ni(OH)2), as evidence by vibration bands at 446 and 510 cm−1. Overall our findings disclose a new and efficient method, calcareous electrochemical precipitation, which has potential applications to remove toxic metals from contaminated waters.

Abstract: Background and aims Recent parsimony-based reconstructions suggest that seeds of early angiosperms had either morphophysiological or physiological dormancy, with the former considered as more probable. The aim of this study was to determine the class of seed dormancy present in Amborella trichopoda , the sole living representative of the most basal angiosperm lineage Amborellales, with a view to resolving fully the class of dormancy present at the base of the angiosperm clade. Methods Drupes of A. trichopoda without fleshy parts were germinated and dissected to observe their structure and embryo growth. Pre-treatments including acid scarification, gibberellin treatment and seed excision were tested to determine their influence on dormancy breakage and germination. Character-state mapping by maximum parsimony, incorporating data from the present work and published sources, was then used to determine the likely class of dormancy present in early angiosperms. Key results Germination in A. trichopoda requires a warm stratification period of at least approx. 90 d, which is followed by endosperm swelling, causing the water-permeable pericarp-mesocarp envelope to split open. The embryo then grows rapidly within the seed, to radicle emergence some 17 d later and cotyledon emergence after an additional 24 d. Gibberellin treatment, acid scarification and excision of seeds from the surrounding drupe tissues all promoted germination by shortening the initial phase of dormancy, prior to embryo growth. Conclusions Seeds of A. trichopoda have non-deep simple morphophysiological dormancy, in which mechanical resistance of the pericarp-mesocarp envelope plays a key role in the initial physiological phase. Maximum parsimony analyses, including data obtained in the present work, indicate that morphophysiological dormancy is likely to be a pleisiomorphic trait in flowering plants. The significance of this conclusion for studies of early angiosperm evolution is discussed.

Abstract: International audience; Classically, deepwater fold-and-thrust belts are classified in two main types, depending if they result from near- or far-field stresses and the understanding of their driving and triggering mechanism is poorly known. We present a geophysical dataset off the western margin of New Caledonia (SW Pacific) that reveals deformed structures of a deepwater fold-and-thrust belt that we interpret as a near-field gravity-driven system, which is not located at a rifted passive margin. The main factor triggering deformation is inferred to be oversteepening of the margin slope by post-obduction isostatic rebound. Onshore erosion of abnormally-dense obducted material, combined with sediment loading in the adjacent basin, has induced vertical motions that have caused oversteepening of the margin. Detailed morpho-bathymetric, seismic stratigraphic and structural analysis reveals that the fold-and-thrust belt extends 200 km along the margin, and 50 km into the New Caledonia Trough. Deformation is rooted at depths greater than 5 km beneath the seafloor, affects an area of 3500 km2, and involves a sediment volume of approximately 13 000 km3. This deformed belt is organized into an imbricate fan system of faults, and one out-of-sequence thrust fault affects the seabed. The thrust faults are deeply rooted in the basin along a low-angle floor thrust and connected to New Caledonia Island along a major detachment. This study not only provides a better knowledge of the New Caledonia margin, but also provides new insight into the mechanisms that trigger deepwater fold-and-thrust belts.

Abstract: This study was conducted to compare the effects of shrimp and rabbitfish in mono- and polyculture stocked at high biomass on production and environmental conditions in a mesocosm system. Shrimp (14 g) and/or rabbitfish (19 g) were stocked in four treatments with different density but with the same total biomass (236 g m−2), including shrimp monoculture (SM) (17 shrimp m−2), shrimp–fish polyculture (SF) (11 shrimp and 4 rabbitfish m−2), fish–shrimp polyculture (FS) (6 shrimp and 8 rabbitfish m−2) and fish monoculture (FM) (12 rabbitfish m−2). After 10 weeks of experiment, shrimp survival and biomass were low in the treatments where shrimp were dominant (SM, SF), while rabbitfish survival and biomass were high in all the treatments. Shrimp mortality was assumed to be related to an excess of the system carrying capacity (CC). Results suggested that CC is linked to shrimp biomass/density rather than the system eutrophication level. The ecosystem became heterotrophic as daily feed supply was beyond 7 g m−2 per day. This threshold corresponded to the environmental CC of the semi-intensive shrimp culture system. Under these conditions, the combination of high fish biomass and low shrimp biomass appeared as the most valuable in terms of system performances.

Abstract: Shells of the cephalopod Nautilus macromphalus were collected in 2011 from three bays on the island of Lifou in the South Pacific six months after a tropical cyclone passed over the island. All three bays were on the east side of the island; Bays 1 and 2 were 200 m apart whereas Bay 3 was 25 km to the north. Nautilus shells in Bays 1 and 2 were studied in 2008 after six years without tropical cyclones. Greatest damage occurred in shells from Bay 1 and the least from Bay 3. Shell encrustation was lowest in Bay 1. In comparison to the 2008 assemblage, Bay 1 had significantly higher levels of damage and lower levels of encrustation whereas Bay 2 had a higher abundance of severe damage. The Bay 3 assemblage, however, was statistically similar to the 2008 assemblage. An exposed beach cut at Bay 3 revealed a recently buried Nautilus deposit. Abstract: International audience; An evaluation of the coloring potential of the different parts of selected plants from New Caledonia has been performed. Among them Hubera nitidissima, an Annonaceae, showed an intense yellow color on fibers. This is the first report of such a coloring potential for a Hubera sp. In this study we present dyeing results obtained with extracts from the leaves of H. nitidissima on linen, silk and wool, color characteristics, dye light-fastness and chemical identity of coloring compounds. The absorbance, K/S index and CIELab coordinates of dyed fibers were measured. Color strength values and fastness properties of the dyed fabrics were high: 7/8 in Blue scale rating. The dyed fibers were analyzed by liquid chromatography hyphenated with UV-Vis spectroscopy and mass spectrometry using UHPLC-DAD-HRMS (ESI-QTOF) instrumentation. We identified two xanthones: mangiferin and homomangiferin together with quercetin glycosides. The hydroalcoholic extract from the leaves was screened for its free radical scavenging properties (DPPH) and showed significant antioxidant activity (26.5 μg/mL). The presence of mangiferin in the Annonaceae family is attested here for the first time. As a result of our study, H. nitidissima appears as an excellent source of light-fast yellow dye with interesting antioxidant properties.

Abstract: The leaf essential oils of three Eugenia species, E. gacognei Montrouz., E. horizontalis Pancher ex Brongn. & Gris and E. noumeensis Guillaumin, have been examined. Eugenia gacognei was a variable species that contained significant amounts of aromatic ethers, with either 2-hydroxy-4,6-dimethoxy-3,5-dimethyl-acetophenone [1] (36.8% in one collection) or a mixture of 6-hydroxy-2,4-dimethoxy-3-methyl-acetophenone [2] (59.6%) and 2-hydroxy-4,6-dimethoxy-acetophenone [3] (12.7%) in a second collection being the principal components. The remainders of the oil were mixtures of mono- and sesquiterpenes. Eugenia horizontalis gave a terpenoid oil in which the principal components were globulol (18.9%) and spathulenol (14.5%). Eugenia noumeensis also gave a terpenoid oil, with monoterpenes predominating and the major components being 1,8-cineole (47.6%), α-terpineol (10.9%) and α-pinene (7.7%).

Abstract: International audience; Ectomycorrhizal fungi (ECM) isolates of Pisolithus albus (Cooke and Massee) from nickel-rich ultramafic topsoils in New Caledonia were inoculated onto Acacia spirorbis Labill. (an endemic Fabaceae) and Eucalyptus globulus Labill. (used as a Myrtaceae plant host model). The aim of the study was to analyze the growth of symbiotic ECM plants growing on the ultramafic substrate that is characterized by high and toxic metal concentrations i.e. Co, Cr, Fe, Mn and Ni, deficient concentrations of plant essential nutrients such as N, P, K, and that presents an unbalanced Ca/Mg ratio (1/19). ECM inoculation was successful with a plant level of root mycorrhization up to 6.7%. ECM symbiosis enhanced plant growth as indicated by significant increases in shoot and root biomass. Presence of ECM enhanced uptake of major elements that are deficient in ultramafic substrates; in particular P, K and Ca. On the contrary, the ECM symbioses strongly reduced transfer to plants of element in excess in soils; in particular all metals. ECM-inoculated plants released metal complexing molecules as free thiols and oxalic acid mostly at lower concentrations than in controls. Data showed that ECM symbiosis helped plant growth by supplying uptake of deficient elements while acting as a protective barrier to toxic metals, in particular for plants growing on ultramafic substrate with extreme soil conditions. Isolation of indigenous and stress-adapted beneficial ECM fungi could serve as a potential tool for inoculation of ECM endemic plants for the successful restoration of ultramafic ecosystems degraded by mining activities.

Abstract: International audience; High species richness is thought to support the delivery of multiple ecosystem functions and services under changing environments. Yet, some species might perform unique functional roles while others are redundant. Thus, the benefits of high species richness in maintaining ecosystem functioning are uncertain if functions have little redundancy, potentially leading to high vulnerability of functions. We studied the natural propensity of assemblages to be functionally buffered against loss prior to fishing activities, using functional trait combinations, in coral reef fish assemblages across unfished wilderness areas of the Indo-Pacific: Chagos Archipelago, New Caledonia and French Polynesia. Fish functional diversity in these wilderness areas is highly vulnerable to fishing, explained by species- and abundance-based redundancy packed into a small combination of traits, leaving most other trait combinations (60%) sensitive to fishing, with no redundancy. Functional vulnerability peaks for mobile and sedentary top predators, and large species in general. Functional vulnerability decreases for certain functional entities in New Caledonia, where overall functional redundancy was higher. Uncovering these baseline patterns of functional vulnerability can offer early warning signals of the damaging effects from fishing, and may serve as baselines to guide precautionary and even proactive conservation actions.

Abstract: Discovering patterns in graphs has many applications such as social network, biological and chemistry data analysis. Although many algorithms were proposed to identify interesting patterns in graphs, most of them consider simple types of graphs such as static graphs or graphs having a single attribute per vertex. Recently, studies have considered discovering frequent patterns in dynamic attributed graphs. These graphs can represent not only relationships between entities but also how they evolve over time, and describe entities with multiple attributes. Algorithms for mining frequent patterns in dynamic attributed graphs select patterns based on their occurrence frequency. But a major drawback of this approach is that many frequent patterns may contain entities that are weakly correlated. Thus, numerous frequent but spurious patterns may be shown to the user. To allows discovering strongly correlated patterns in dynamic attributed graphs, this paper proposes a novel significance measure named Sequence Virtual Growth Rate. It allows evaluating if a pattern represents entities that are correlated in terms of their proximity in a graph over time. Based on this measure a novel type of graph patterns is defined called Significant Trend Sequence. To efficiently mine these patterns, two algorithms named TSeqMiner d f s − b f s and TSeqMiner d f s − d f s are proposed. They rely on a novel upper bound and pruning strategy to reduce the search space. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithms are efficient and can identify interesting patterns in real-world social network and flight data.

Abstract: International audience; Marine tetrapods evolved specific excretory structures (e.g. salt glands) that maintain salt concentrations within a narrow range of variation. However, recent investigations showed that in some lineages (sea snakes), individuals dehydrate in seawater and cannot equilibrate their hydromineral balance without access to fresh water. How these marine species cope with salt gain is therefore puzzling. We sampled two species of amphibious sea kraits (Laticauda saintgironsi and L. laticaudata) in the field. We also experimentally investigated patterns of salt regulation, specifically variations in natremia (plasma sodium) and body mass (net water flow), in individuals transferred first to fresh water and then to seawater. Our results show that free-ranging sea kraits display hypernatremia (up to 205 mmo.l-1). Experimental data showed that natremia markedly decreased in snakes exposed to fresh water and increased when they were transferred to saltwater, thereby demonstrating a marked flexibility in their relation to environmental conditions. A literature survey indicated that all free-ranging marine snake species usually display hypernatremia despite having functional salt glands. Overall, sea snakes exhibit a marked tolerance to salt load compared to other marine tetrapods and apparently trigger substantial salt excretion only once natremia exceeds a high threshold. We hypothesize that this high tolerance significantly decreases energetic costs linked to salt gland functioning.

Abstract: Dengue virus is the worldʼs most prevalent human pathogenic arbovirus. There is currently no treatment or vaccine, and solutions are urgently needed. We previously demonstrated that biflavonoids from Dacrydium balansae, an endemic gymnosperm from New Caledonia, are potent inhibitors of the Dengue virus NS5 RNA-dependent RNA polymerase. Herein we describe the structure-activity relationship study of 23 compounds: biflavonoids from D. balansae (1–4) and from D. araucarioides (5–10), hexamethyl-amentoflavone (11), cupressuflavone (12), and apigenin derivatives (13–23). We conclude that 1) over the four different biflavonoid skeletons tested, amentoflavone (1) and robustaflavone (5) are the most promising ones for antidengue drug development, 2) the number and position of methyl groups on the biflavonoid moiety modulate their inhibition of Dengue virus NS5 RNA-dependent RNA polymerase, and 3) the degree of oxygenation of flavonoid monomers influences their antidengue potential. Sotetsuflavone (8), with an IC50 = 0.16 µM, is the most active compound of this series and is the strongest inhibitor of the Dengue virus NS5 RNA-dependent RNA polymerase described in the literature.

Abstract: In order to improve knowledge about the role of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) in the tolerance to heavy metals in ultramafic soils, the present study investigated the influence of two Glomus etunicatum isolates from New Caledonian ultramafic maquis (shrubland), on nickel tolerance of a model plant species Sorghum vulgare, and of two ultramafic endemic plant species, Alphitonia neocaledonica and Cloezia artensis. In a first step, plants were grown in a greenhouse, on sand with defined concentrations of Ni, to appreciate the effects of the two isolates on the alleviation of Ni toxicity in controlled conditions. In a second step, the influence of the AMF on A. neocaledonica and C. artensis plants grown in a New Caledonian ultramafic soil rich in extractable nickel was investigated. Ni reduced mycorrhizal colonization and sporulation of the fungal isolates, but the symbionts increased plant growth and adaptation of endemic plant species to ultramafic conditions. One of the two G. etunicatum isolates showed a stronger positive effect on plant biomass and phosphorus uptake, and a greater reduction in toxicity symptoms and Ni concentration in roots and shoots. The symbionts seemed to act as a barrier to the absorption of Ni by the plant and reduced root-to-shoot Ni translocation. Results indicate the potential of selected native AMF isolates from ultramafic areas for ecological restoration of such degraded ecosystems.
