Abstract

The reuse of wastewater aims to mobilize and treat, for certain uses and under certain conditions, water that has already been used. Rather than discharging wastewater into the natural environment, this practice aims to recover it by replacing the mobilization of water withdrawn from the environment [van Loosdrecht and Brdjanovic, 2014]. By moving from a linear logic of the mobilization and use of water to a circular approach, the objective pursued is to reduce the pressure, qualitative then quantitative, on the resources while limiting, as far as possible, the usage conflicts. It is in fact a question of passing from a simple competitive mode which strongly mobilizes resources, to a complex mode, known as “circular”, of putting in complementarity of uses. This approach initially mainly concerned agricultural uses insofar as agricultural needs represent the majority of the water mobilized, including developed countries [UN Water 2018]. Cities integrate specific issues that are characterized by significantly different options from those that can be found in rural areas. In the city, the recovery of wastewater has both material aspects (water, nutrients, critical metals, biopolymers, etc.) and energy aspects (recovery of heat from the networks, production of energy by biological means and /or thermal,…) which should be integrated on an appropriate scale according to the problems addressed (housing, building, district, city, territory or hydrological basin). To study the conditions under which REUSE can develop and be implemented in a safe and sustainable manner, research is needed [Ait-Mouheb et al., 2018]. If it represents an opportunity in certain territories where wastewater can be mobilized, it is also necessary to underline the limits of this practice in territories where the wastewater discharged into the environment is necessary to maintain the low water levels of rivers and rivers, or where soils may be affected, for example, by the salinity of these waters. In addition, studies of the social, economic and environmental dimensions differ significantly depending on the uses envisaged and the situations considered. To meet these challenges, the REUSE network of INRAE (cf. www6.inrae.fr) proposes to adopt a multidisciplinary and multi-scale approach by mobilizing not only the disciplines that can be considered as falling within the field of technologies and environmental engineering but also all of those relating to the human and social sciences, economics, legal, and participatory sciences.

15. Groundwater-Surface water exchanges in an alluvial plain subjected to pumping: a coupled multitracer and modeling approach.

Abstract

Alluvial aquifers represent a vital water resource for many regions. However, understanding and characterizing the interactions between rivers and these aquifers is a major challenge for researchers and water managers. This characterization, in terms of flow velocity or water supply, is important to identify the vulnerability of the aquifers. In this study, our goal is to improve the understanding of interactions between rivers and alluvial aquifers by combining a multi-tracer approach with numerical modeling. By integrating these two complementary methods, we aim to accurately quantify the exchanges between groundwater and surface water, and to identify the water sources contributing to aquifer recharge. This combined approach allows a better quantification of river-aquifer interactions at local scale, in the context of groundwater exploitation by pumping along the river. A large drinking water catchment field located on the banks of the Rhône River, in the southeast of France, was chosen as the study site. This site consists of several pumping wells and observation piezometers parallel to the Rhône. As often, with alluvial aquifer exploitation close to a river, the pumping leads to flow from surface water to groundwater. Groundwater temperature, piezometric levels and river surface water levels were continuously recorded for an 18-month period. During field campaigns, conductivity, stable isotopes of water and radon activity of groundwater and surface water were measured. Radon was applied in a new way to measure the water flow from the river to the aquifer, which reduces the natural radon signal in the aquifer by radon-poor waters from a river. On the site, the radon data clearly delineates groundwater recharge from the river within 50 meters from the banks. The methodology to interpret periodic groundwater temperature signals was extended to the isotopic signal, making it possible to identify the dispersivity in addition to Darcy's velocity. All the experimental data were accounted for in a synthetic MODFLOW model, taking into account the boundary effect of the Ouvèze and Rhone rivers. Model calibration was made using the piezometric records and the PEST package. Reactive transport of radon was implemented using MT3DMS to ascertain the overall water balance of the study site. In addition to the Rhône as a supply, we have shown that the other river (Ouvèze) also contributes of the site's supply (around 55%). By improving our understanding of the interactions between rivers and alluvial aquifers, this study offers valuable insights for sustainable water resource management in regions similar to our study site, i.e., the case of a losing river recharging an exploited aquifer and demonstrates the value of natural tracers, such as radon or stable water isotopes, in situations where the application of artificial tracers is impractical. Abstract

L’action E1 du 6ème programme de l’Observatoire des Sédiments du Rhône (OSR6) vise à pérenniser le réseau de suivi des flux de matières en suspension (MES) et de contaminants associés. Ce rapport dresse le bilan des avancées réalisées sur l’ensemble du réseau en 2021 en termes de stations actives, de prélèvements de MES et d’analyses physico-chimiques, ainsi que sur les calculs de flux de contaminants dans la Base de Données des Observatoires en Hydrologie (BDOH). L’année 2021 a été principalement orientée sur la continuité du fonctionnement des 12 stations actives du réseau de mesure (11 stations équipées de mesure de turbidité et de prélèvements de MES pour l’analyse des contaminants + 1 station équipée seulement de mesure de turbidité), et la production de données à ces stations. La publication en cours d’un article sur les données ainsi acquises va permettre de valoriser ce réseau de suivi à l’échelle nationale et internationale.

Abstract

International audience; Sunscreens are of emerging concern regarding environmental health because, during bathing activity, the UV filters incorporated in high concentration can be released from the consumer’s skin to the coastal ecosystem. In order to assess this release from beachgoers into seawater, a field campaign was carried out during the summer of 2017 at three beaches in Marseille, along the French Mediterranean coast. A social survey analyzed beachgoer attendance, the quantities and types of suncare products used and the bathing frequencies, while the bathing water was analyzed spatially and temporally so as to quantify both mineral and organic UV filters directly released and recovered.During the peak recreational time at the three beaches, both mineral and organic UV filters were detected in higher concentrations in the bathing area than offshore. Moreover, higher concentrations were recovered in the water top surface layer than in the water column, ranging at 10-1000 μg/L for mineral and 10-500 ng/L for organic UV filters. More than 75% of the 471 interviewees reported bathing every time they go to the beach, with 68% using a suncare product 2.6 times on average. We could estimate that an average mass of 52 kg/day or 1.4 t/month of suncare products are possibly released into bathing water for a beach attended by 3,000 people daily. Our study revealed two distinct scenarios for the mineral and organic filters. While up to 45% of the mineral filters used by beachgoers were recovered in the seawater, the organic filters were minimally recovered, most likely due to internalization through the skin barrier or partial photodegradation.; Les crèmes solaires sont une préoccupation croissante en termes d’impact environnemental car, pendant l'activité de baignade, les filtres UV incorporés en forte concentration peuvent être libérés de la peau du consommateur vers l'écosystème côtier. Afin d'évaluer ce rejet des baigneurs dans l'eau de mer, une campagne de terrain a été menée durant l'été 2017 sur trois plages de Marseille, le long de la côte méditerranéenne française. Une enquête sociétale a analysé la fréquentation des plageurs, les quantités et types de produits solaires utilisés et les fréquences de baignade, tandis que les eaux de baignade ont été analysées spatialement et temporellement de manière à quantifier les filtres UV minéraux et organiques directement rejetés et récupérés.Pendant la période de pointe de fréquentation sur les trois plages, les filtres UV minéraux et organiques ont été détectés à des concentrations plus élevées dans la zone de baignade qu'au large. De plus, des concentrations plus élevées ont été mesurées dans la couche superficielle de l'eau que dans la colonne d'eau, allant de 10 à 1000 μg/L pour les filtres UV minéraux et de 10 à 500 ng/L pour les filtres UV organiques. Plus de 75 % des 471 personnes interrogées ont déclaré se baigner à chaque fois qu'elles vont à la plage, et 68 % s’appliquent un produit solaire 2,6 fois en moyenne. Nous avons pu estimer qu'une masse moyenne de 52 kg/j ou 1,4 t/mois de produits solaires sont susceptibles d'être rejetées dans les eaux de baignade pour une plage fréquentée par 3 000 personnes quotidiennement. Notre étude a révélé deux scénarios distincts pour les filtres minéraux et organiques. Alors que jusqu'à 45% des filtres minéraux utilisés par les baigneurs ont été quantifiés dans l'eau de mer, les filtres organiques n'ont été que très peu récupérés, très probablement en raison d'une internalisation à travers la barrière cutanée ou d'une photodégradation partielle.

Abstract

La matière organique particulaire (MOP) constitue une phase solide qui peut avoir un rôle important pour la fixation de contaminants organiques ou minéraux, et donc sur leur transfert dans l’environnement. Ces liens connus pour les sols contaminés le sont beaucoup moins dans les milieux aquatiques, où la diversité de l’origine de la matière organique et des sources de contaminants induit une hétérogénéité encore à contraindre. Ce livrable présente la synthèse des études réalisées dans le cadre de l’OSR 5 sur ces liens qui pourraient exister entre matière organique particulaire et teneurs en contaminants métalliques ou radionucléides dans les matières en suspension du Rhône (MES). Il se base sur l’ensemble des données disponibles de l’OSR aux stations d’Arles et de Jons, et sur des résultats du programme de recherche CANADER (porteur H. Lepage) financé dans le cadre de l’OHM-VR en 2019-2020. Les teneurs en carbone organique particulaire (COP) sont utilisées comme traceur de la MOP. Leur variabilité est élevée et représente entre 1 à 10% de la masse des MES sur Arles. Elles diminuent en proportion dans les MES avec le débit et la charge : plus le débit est fort, plus la part de fraction organique est faible. Certains évènements de crue se dissocient de cette tendance dans le cas où ils constituent des apports de matière organique fossile géologique issues des sols érodés (Durance et Isère notamment). Les résultats montrent cependant que la mesure du seul COP ne suffit pas à différencier les sources de MOP, et il faut passer par d’autres traceurs (chlorophylle, stérols…) qui révèlent trois origines pour la MOP actuelle : une production algale autochtone, un apport des végétaux supérieurs des bassins versants, des apports de stations d’épuration. Les proportions de ces apports ne peuvent pas être précisées avec la base des données disponibles, mais de manière relative ils varient dans l’espace et le temps. La production algale est notamment marquée par des blooms printaniers ou estivaux sur de courtes périodes qui restent difficile à capter lors des échantillonnages. Aucune relation claire et/ou généralisable n’a pu être mise en évidence entre le COP et les teneurs en éléments traces métalliques (ETM), le 14C ou le tritium. On peut toutefois retenir les points suivants : a) il existe une possibilité d’intégration du 14C rejeté par les industries nucléaires au sein de la matière organique autochtone (photosynthèse), constituant une voie de transfert privilégiée vers la chaîne trophique. Cette incorporation serait notamment favorisée lors des faibles teneurs en MES. b) les données actuelles ne montrent pas de lien entre la variabilité de la MOP naturelle et celle des teneurs en tritium organiquement lié soulignant la prédominance des formes technogéniques du tritium dans le fleuve (tritium « horloger ») c) les relations entre ETM et COP en Arles ou Jons ne sont pas généralisables. On observe sur Jons une relation positive entre COP et Cu, Zn, Pb et Cd, mais elle se caractérise par un comportement inversé entre les chasses-crues et débits normaux. La relation positive lors des débits normaux confirme cependant le lien fort entre ces ETM et MOP. Sur Arles, cette relation existe encore mais n’est plus significative statistiquement. Les MES sur cette dernière station résultent d’une homogénéisation des apports de tout le bassin, et la diversité d’origine du COP et des contaminants lisse et annule les relations qui pourraient peut-être exister au sein de chaque affluent (comme celle observée sur Jons).

Abstract

Sunscreens are emulsions of water and oil that contain filters capable of protecting against the detrimental effects of ultraviolet radiation (UV). The widespread use of cosmetic products based on nanoparticulate UV filters has increased concerns regarding their safety and compatibility with both the environment and human health. In the present work, we evaluated the effects of titanium dioxide nanoparticle (TiO2 NP)-based UV filters with three different surface coatings on the development and immunity of the sea urchin, Paracentrotus lividus. A wide range of NP concentrations was analyzed, corresponding to different levels of dilution starting from the original cosmetic dispersion. Variations in surface coating, concentration, particle shape, and pre-dispersant medium (i.e., water or oil) influenced the embryonic development without producing a relevant developmental impairment. The most common embryonic abnormalities were related to the skeletal growth and the presence of a few cells, which were presumably involved in the particle uptake. Adult P. lividus immune cells exposed to silica-coated TiO2 NP-based filters showed a broad metabolic plasticity based on the biosynthesis of metabolites that mediate inflammation, phagocytosis, and antioxidant response.
