The limits for loading soils with Tunisian urban compost for cultivating Medicago sativa were determined in a 6-month experiment in a greenhouse. Mature municipal solid waste compost (MSWC) from Tunis city was applied to clay and sandy soils from cultivated fields at rates equivalent to 40, 80, 120tha−1. In the absence of MSWC, the shoot biomass (dry weight) cumulated over four cuts was 2–2.5 lower in sandy soil than in clay soil. It was 20–25% augmented upon MSWC addition in clay soil, independently of MSWC dose. The opposite trend was observed in sandy soil, the shoot yields being diminished by MSWC in a dose dependent manner. In MSWC-amended clay soil but not in sandy soil, Cd, Cu, Zn, and Pb concentrations in shoots remained below or close to the tolerated values according to EEC norms. Abstract: The consequences of direct iron deficiency and iron resupply were evaluated during development stages of two Tunisian chickpea varieties (INRAT88 and Chetoui) cultivated in continuously aerated solution with or without 20 μM Fe. The chlorosis score was estimated during culture. Growth parameters, chlorophyll concentration, acidification capacity and Fe concentration were measured every three days during the 21-day treatment. After three weeks of treatment, the chlorosis index was 3-fold higher in Chetoui than in INRAT88, and a considerable decrease of chlorophyll concentration was observed in Chetoui plants since the 6th day of –Fe deprivation. Iron deficiency significantly inhibited whole-plant biomass deposition in both varieties. However, the growth reduction appeared earlier, and was more pronounced in Chetoui than in INRAT88. The whole-plant Fe content decreased dramatically under deficient conditions, and we note an Fe enrichment in shoots at the expense of roots. The sensitivity of Chetoui as compared to INRAT88 was confirmed by the behaviour of resupplied (–Fe/+Fe) plants. In fact, the addition of iron to deficient plants had no significant effect in Chetoui, whereas it led to a total recovery in INRAT88. The capacity of INRAT88 to maintain plant growth and to preserve adequate chlorophyll synthesis under limited iron conditions is related to its better Fe-use efficiency, in addition to its capacity to rapidly recover from this stress. For this study, the diversity of some effects of salinity on rosette growth, seed production, and seed viability in Arabidopsis thaliana was explored. Plants from 5 accessions (“ecotypes”) were grown on a sand-peat mixture irrigated with nutritive medium. At the emergence of inflorescence axis, 35 mM NaCl was added to the solution. Several morphological parameters of the rosette were measured at the beginning of silique opening, irrigation was interrupted and the substrate was allowed to dry. The siliques and the mature seeds were harvested, and assayed for K+, Na+ and Cl−. Seeds were sown on pure water and germination kinetics were determined. There was a large inter-ecotype variability of the effect of salt on the rosette growth and on all factors contribution to reproduction (number of inflorescence axes, number of flower per axis, flower fertility, and seed viability). Among the five ecotypes, those with highest levels of Na+ and Cl− in the silique valves produced the less viable seeds. This comparison, (i) suggests that salt accumulation in the former organs has detrimental effect on seed maturation, and (ii) indicates that there is a natural variability for control of ion transport to fruits in A. thaliana. The variability of the sensitivity to sodium chloride (NaCl) in relation with leaf ionic content has been explored in Arabidopsis thaliana. Seedlings of eight ecotypes (WS, COL, LER, NOK0, NOK1, NOK2, NW40, and N273) were grown on a peat substrate mixed or not with 50 mM NaCl. The effect of NaCl treatment on rosette leaf dry weight after 18 days (vegetative stage) was used to establish a scale of sensitivity to salt, where COL was the most sensitive ecotype and NOK2 the more tolerant one. The tolerance to NaCl was associated to a better growth of plants, responsible for a dilution of Na+ in leaf tissues, and to a better supply of K+ to leaves. These two characteristics were responsible for maintenance of a high K/Na ratio in leaves of to the most tolerant ecotypes (NOK1, NOK2), as compared to the other ones. Responses of leaf peroxidase activity to a five-day treatment with NaCl in light and darkness conditions suggest that oxidative status is changed only in the sensitive ecotypes. Dried fruits are renowned for their nutritional value, particularly their seeds. However, their skins, shells, and hulls also hold significant nutritional and commercial potential, yet remain largely unexplored for their bioactive compounds. This study examines the teguments and shells of three types of dried fruits – hazelnut, peanut, and two almond varieties. Ethanol extracts from these by-products reveal a variety of phytochemicals with antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antiviral properties, confirmed through in vitro and in vivo assays. Teguments contain higher polyphenol levels compared to shells, with 24 compounds identified via HPLC analysis. The Achak almond tegument extract demonstrates strong antiradical activity, significant antimicrobial effects, and notable antiviral properties at a low concentration. Moreover, extracts from Achak almond tegument and hazelnut shells exhibit notable anti-inflammatory properties. This underscores the potential of utilizing dried fruit by-products to create innovative, value-added products, supporting environmental sustainability and boosting the competitiveness of the dried fruit industry. Summary: The effect of salt stress on nitrogen fixation, in relation to sucrose transport towards nodules and other sink organs and the potential of sucrose breakdown by nodules, was investigated in two lines of Medicago ciliaris. Under salt stress conditions, the two lines showed a decrease of total biomass production, but TNC 1.8 was less affected by salt than TNC 11.9. The chlorophyll content was not changed in TNC 1.8, in contrast to TNC 11.9. Shoot, root, and nodule biomass were also affected in the two lines, but TNC 1.8 exhibited the higher potentialities of biomass production of these organs. Nitrogen fixation also decreased in the two lines, and was more sensitive to salt than growth parameters. TNC 1.8 consistently exhibited the higher values of nitrogen fixation. Unlike nodules, leaves of both lines were well supplied in nutrients with some exceptions. Specifically, the calcium content decreased in the sensitive line leaves, and the nodule magnesium content was not changed in either line. The tolerant line accumulated more sodium in its leaves. The two lines did not show any differences in the nodule sodium content. Sucrose allocation towards nodules was affected by salt in the two lines, but this constraint did not seem to affect the repartition of sucrose between sink organs. Salt stress induced perturbations in nodule sucrolytic activities in the two lines. It inhibited sucrose synthase, but the inhibition was more marked in TNC 11.9; alkaline/neutral activity was not altered in TNC 1.8, whereas it decreased more than half in TNC 11.9. Thus, the relative tolerance of TNC 1.8 to salt stress could be attributed to a better use of these photoassimilates by nodules and a better supply of bacteroids in malate.
