Abstract

Neutron-rich light nuclei and their reactions play an important role for the creation of chemical elements. Here, data from a Coulomb dissociation experiment on $^{20,21}$N are reported. Relativistic $^{20,21}$N ions impinged on a lead target and the Coulomb dissociation cross section was determined in a kinematically complete experiment. Using the detailed balance theorem, the $^{19}\mathrm{N}(\mathrm{n},\gamma)^{20}\mathrm{N}$ and $^{20}\mathrm{N}(\mathrm{n},\gamma)^{21}\mathrm{N}$ excitation functions and thermonuclear reaction rates have been determined. The $^{19}\mathrm{N}(\mathrm{n},\gamma)^{20}\mathrm{N}$ rate is up to a factor of 5 higher at $T<1$\,GK with respect to previous theoretical calculations, leading to a 10\,\% decrease in the predicted fluorine abundance.

Abstract

Alternative acceleration technologies are currently under development for cost-effective, robust, compact and efficient solutions. One such technology is plasma wakefield acceleration, driven by either a charged particle or laser beam. However, the potential issues must be studied in detail. In this paper, the emittance growth of the witness beam through elastic scattering from gaseous media is derived. 19 pags., 16 figs., 8 tabs., We present the design, prototype developments and test results of the new time-of-flight detector (ToFD) which is part of the R3B experimental setup at GSI and FAIR, Darmstadt, Germany. The ToFD detector is able to detect heavy-ion residues of all charges at relativistic energies with a relative energy precision σΔE/ ΔE of up to 1% and a time precision of up to 14 ps (sigma). Together with an elaborate particle-tracking system, the full identification of relativistic ions from hydrogen up to uranium in mass and nuclear charge is possible., This work received support from BMBF (05P19RFFN1, 05P15RDFN1, 05P19RDFN1) and HIC for FAIR. Abstract

This letter reports lifetime measurements of excited states in the odd-N nucleus 163W using the recoil-distance Doppler shift method to probe the core polarising effect of the i13/2 neutron orbital on the underlying soft triaxial even-even core. The ratio B(E2:21/2⁺ → 17/2⁺)/B(E2:17/2⁺ → 13/2⁺) is consistent with the predictions of the collective rotational model. The deduced B(E2) values provide insights into the validity of collective model predictions for heavy transitional nuclei and a geometric origin for the anomalous B(E2) ratios observed in nearby even-even nuclei is proposed.

Abstract

The space and time configurations of the dissociation of 8 He into 6 He+n+n, on C and Pb targets, have been explored simultaneously for the first time. The final-state interactions in the n-n and 6 He-n channels are successfully described within a model that considers independent emission of neutrons from a Gaussian volume with a given lifetime. The dissociation on C target exhibits a dominant sequential decay through the ground state of 7 He, consistent with neutrons being emitted from a Gaussian volume of fm with a n-n delay in the sequential channel of 1400 400 fm/c, in agreement with the lifetime of 7 He. The lower-statistics data on Pb target correspond mainly to direct breakup, and are well described using the n-n volume measured, without any n -n delay. Abstract

Quasifree one-proton knockout reactions have been employed in inverse kinematics for a systematic study of the structure of stable and exotic oxygen isotopes at the R3B/LAND setup with incident beam energies in the range of 300–450 MeV/u. The oxygen isotopic chain offers a large variation of separation energies that allows for a quantitative understanding of single-particle strength with changing isospin asymmetry. Quasifree knockout reactions provide a complementary approach to intermediate-energy one-nucleon removal reactions. Inclusive cross sections for quasifree knockout reactions of the type AO(p,2p)A−1N have been determined and compared to calculations based on the eikonal reaction theory. The reduction factors for the single-particle strength with respect to the independent-particle model were obtained and compared to state-of-the-art ab initio predictions. The results do not show any significant dependence on proton-neutron asymmetry.

Abstract

Neutron-rich light nuclei and their reactions play an important role in the creation of chemical elements. Here, data from a Coulomb dissociation experiment on N20,21 are reported. Relativistic N20,21 ions impinged on a lead target and the Coulomb dissociation cross section was determined in a kinematically complete experiment. Using the detailed balance theorem, the N19(n,γ)N20 and N20(n,γ)N21 excitation functions and thermonuclear reaction rates have been determined. Abstract

The low-lying level structure of the unbound system 16B has been investigated via single-proton removal from a 35 MeV/nucleon 17C beam. The coincident detection of the beam velocity 15B fragment and neutron allowed the relative energy of the in-flight decay of 16B to be reconstructed. The resulting spectrum exhibited a narrow peak some 85 keV above threshold. It is argued that this feature most probably corresponds to a very narrow (Γ ≪ 100 keV) resonance with a dominant π (p3 / 2)-1 ⊗ ν (d5 / 23)J = 3 / 2+ + π (p3 / 2)-1 ⊗ ν (d5 / 22, s1 / 2)J = 3 / 2+ configuration which decays by d-wave neutron emission. © 2009 Elsevier B.V. Abstract

The B (E 1 ;1 / 2+ → 1 / 2-) strength for 11Be has been extracted from intermediate energy Coulomb excitation measurements, over a range of beam energies using a new reaction model, the extended continuum discretized coupled channels (XCDCC) method. In addition, a measurement of the excitation cross section for 11Be + 208Pb at 38.6 MeV/nucleon is reported. The B (E 1) strength of 0.105(12) e2 fm2 derived from this measurement is consistent with those made previously at 60 and 64 MeV/nucleon, in contrast to an anomalously low result obtained at 43 MeV/nucleon. By coupling a multi-configuration description of the projectile structure with realistic reaction theory, the XCDCC model provides for the first time a fully quantum mechanical description of Coulomb excitation. The XCDCC calculations reveal that the excitation process involves significant contributions from nuclear, continuum, and higher-order effects. An analysis of the present and two earlier intermediate energy measurements yields a combined B(E1) strength of 0.105(7) e2 fm2. This value is in good agreement with the value deduced independently from the lifetime of the 1 / 2- state in 11Be, and has a comparable precision. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. Abstract

The breaking of the N=8 shell-model magic number in the Be12 ground state has been determined to include significant occupancy of the intruder d-wave orbital. This is in marked contrast with all other N=8 isotones, both more and less exotic than Be12. Abstract

Data have been obtained on exclusive single neutron knockout cross sections from 12Be to study its ground state structure. The cross sections for the production of 11Be in its ground state (1/2 +) and first excited state (0.32 MeV, 1/2 -) have previously been measured, indicating a strong (2s 1 2) 2 component to the 12Be ground state. In the present experiment, performed at the GANIL laboratory, cross sections for the first (0.32 MeV, 1/2 -) and second (1.78 MeV, 5/2 +, unbound) excited states in 11Be were measured, which gives information on the admixture of (1p 1 2) 2 and (1d 5 2) 2 components in the ground state of 12Be. A fragmentation beam of 12Be of ∼10000 pps (95% pure) was incident on a carbon target at 41 MeV/u. The beam particles were tracked onto the target, and their energies were measured event-by-event. The beam-like residues were measured in a position sensitive telescope mounted at zero degrees, and neutrons were measured in the DéMoN array. The 1/2 - state of 11Be was identified by measuring coincident 320 keV γ-rays, using four NaI detectors. Full kinematic reconstruction of unbound states in 11Be was performed using coincident neutrons and 10Be ions. Abstract

Measurements of the helium-cluster breakup and neutron removal cross-sections for neutron-rich Be isotopes 10-12,14Be are presented. These have been studied in the 30 to 42 MeV/nucleon energy range where reaction measurements are proposed to be sensitive to the cluster content of the ground-state wave-function. These measurements provide a comprehensive survey of the decay processes of the Be isotopes by which the valence neutrons are removed revealing the underlying α-α core-cluster structure. The measurements indicate that clustering in the Be isotopes remains important up to the drip-line nucleus 14Be and that the dominant helium-cluster structure in the neutron-rich Be isotopes corresponds to α-Xn-α. © 2003 Published by Elsevier B.V., SCOPUS: ar.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

Abstract

Measurements of the neutron removal and cluster breakup cross sections for the neutron-rich nuclei 14Be and 14B have been performed at 34.4 and 40.8 MeV/nucleon, respectively. Enhancement of the first chance cluster breakup cross section for 14Be compared to that of 14B provides evidence for a well-developed He cluster structure of the ground state of 14Be. Abstract

Measurements of the breakup and the neutron removal reactions of 16C have been made at 46 MeV/A and the decay cross sections measured. A correlation between the cluster breakup channels and the reaction Q value suggests that the reaction mechanism is strongly linked to quasielastic processes. No enhancement of the two-body cluster breakup cross section is seen for 16C. Abstract

The breakup of 10,12Be into He clusters has been studied using the p, 12C(12Be,6He,6He) and 12C(12Be,4He,6He) inelastic scattering and two neutron transfer reactions with a 378 MeV 12Be beam incident on 12C and (CH2)n targets. Evidence has been found for three new states in 10Be at excitation energies of 13.2, 14.8, and 16.1 MeV, which may be associated with a 4He+6He cluster structure. The first kinematically complete breakup reaction study of 14Be was carried out. Abstract

The breakup of 12Be into 6He + 6He and 4He + 8He has been studied using a 378 MeV 12Be beam inelastically excited by 12C and (CH2)n targets. The measurements indicate that breakup occurs from rotational states in the 10 to 25 MeV excitation energy interval, with spins in the range of 4ℏ to 8ℏ. Abstract

We present experimental results on the electromagnetic excitation of neutron-rich nickel isotopes, making use of the R3B-LAND setup at GSI. Exotic beams were produced at approximately 500 MeV/u and their reactions were studied in inverse kinematics. Integral cross sections for 58Ni are discussed and compared to previous data, providing a validation of our experimental method. The E1 excitation-energy distribution of the unstable 68Ni is presented as well, showing an excess in cross section in the 1n decay channel when compared only with a typical Giant Dipole Resonance.
