This study tested in an asymptomatic cohort of 171 men (49.2 ± 8.6 years) and 131 women (51.8 ± 8.5 years) whether waist circumference (WC) and circulating levels of insulin-like growth factor-binding protein 2 (IGFBP-2) could identify individuals with liver fat > 5% as assessed by magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Participants with high WC (> 85 or 90 cm for women and men, respectively) and low IGFBP-2 (< 260 or 230 ng/mL for women and men, respectively) were characterized by a higher risk of having MASLD (46.3%, p < 0.0001). Among the 68 individuals with MASLD, 73.5% fell into the subgroup with high WC and low IGFBP-2 concentrations (p < 0.0001). When combined, these markers reached a sensitivity of 73.5% and specificity of 75.2% for MASLD. Subjects were classified as non-COPD controls and COPD, according to the Global initiative for chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) classification, and the presence of cardiometabolic comorbidities was recorded. Ectopic fat accumulation was documented from computed tomography measurements of visceral adipose tissue cross-sectional areas and muscle mean attenuation, assessed at L4–L5. Blood glucose, lipid, and adipokine profiles were also evaluated.Results: After correcting for age, sex, and tobacco exposure, visceral adipose tissue cross-sectional area was higher in GOLD 2+ compared to GOLD 1 individuals. Abstract

Polythermal glaciers can trap considerable volumes of liquid water with the potential to generate devastating outburst floods. This study aims to identify water‐filled subglacial reservoirs from ambient seismic noise collected by moderate‐cost surveys. The horizontal‐to‐vertical spectral ratio technique is highly sensitive to impedance contrasts at interfaces, thus commonly used to estimate glacier thickness. Here, we focus on the inverse ratio, that is, the V/H spectral ratio (VHSR), whose high values indicate a low impedance volume beneath the surface, suggesting subglacial cavities. We analyze VHSR peaks from a seismic array of 60 nodes installed on the Tête‐Rousse Glacier (Mont Blanc massif, French Alps); data were gathered over 15 days. Mapping the VHSR amplitude over the free surface reveals the main cavity locations and the basal areas affected by melting within the glacier. Results obtained in the field are supported by a conceptual model based on 3D finite‐element simulations. Plain Language Summary: Considerable volumes of liquid water may be trapped within cavities in polythermal glaciers. If these cavities rupture, the resulting outburst flood has the potential to cause devastation in populated mountain areas. With the aim of testing methods to locate such cavities, we installed 60 small 3‐component seismic sensors on the Tête‐Rousse Glacier (Mont Blanc massif, French Alps), which is known to contain such cavities. We used these sensors to test a detection method based on ambient seismic noise. For 3 weeks, the sensors recorded vibrations within the glacier. On a glacier without cavities, these vibrations ought to be predominantly in the horizontal direction. In the presence of a cavity, we expect the ice above the cavity to vibrate mostly vertically—like a bridge. In this paper, we highlight areas on the glacier where vertical vibrations were stronger than horizontal vibrations. These areas fit well with the locations of the main known cavities in this glacier, and with areas affected by basal melting. We supported our field observations with modeling based on 3D simulations, paving the way to a new method to locate water‐filled cavities within glaciers. Abstract

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is a common, serious, genetic heart disorder. Rare pathogenic variants in sarcomere genes cause HCM, but with unexplained phenotypic heterogeneity. Moreover, most patients do not carry such variants. We report a genome-wide association study of 2,780 cases and 47,486 controls that identified 12 genome-wide-significant susceptibility loci for HCM. Single-nucleotide polymorphism heritability indicated a strong polygenic influence, especially for sarcomere-negative HCM (64% of cases; h2g = 0.34 ± 0.02). A genetic risk score showed substantial influence on the odds of HCM in a validation study, halving the odds in the lowest quintile and doubling them in the highest quintile, and also influenced phenotypic severity in sarcomere variant carriers. Mendelian randomization identified diastolic blood pressure (DBP) as a key modifiable risk factor for sarcomere-negative HCM, with a one standard deviation increase in DBP increasing the HCM risk fourfold. Common variants and modifiable risk factors have important roles in HCM that we suggest will be clinically actionable.

Abstract

Session - Civil Infrastructure-Concrete 3, paper ECNDT-0349-2018; International audience; The “Non Destructive Evaluation of containment nuclear plant structures” project (ENDE) is a French project developed with 8 partners. Its aims are to control the containment of structures by Non Destructive Testing with ultrasonic, electromagnetic and electric techniques. The results are than combined together to consolidate the final evaluation. Two different objectives are proposed, the first is to estimate concrete properties and the second to follow concrete damages and cracks. The 4 years project was carried out in two steps (in laboratory and on site). The first step consists in realizing two sets of tests on concrete specimens in the laboratory. Objectives of the first set are to characterize the material and to quantify the sensitivity of the Non Destructive Evaluation (NDE) to durability indicators (elasticity modulus, strength, porosity, water content) of the concrete. Two new indicators (thermal damage and stress applied) are tested in order to take into account a possibility of an accident (LLCA). Such accident induces relatively very severe conditions (pressure=4.2 bar and temperature T=180°C) inside the containment The second set was developed to evaluate damaged zones and cracks. The data fusion of measured NDE parameters is applied and developed for each result with two specific processes. It allows to select most sensitive and efficient approaches. The second step consists in an investigation of selected non destructives parameters on a real structures that is containment structures under varying pressure. The presented results were obtained on a mock-up of a containment wall realized in a 1/3 scale and constructed by EDF (Electricity of France) within the VeRCoRs program. These tests are realized in 2017 and simulate the ten-year nuclear power plants control in which the two functions regularly tested are: the concrete mechanical properties and the containment walls leakage. This paper presents the ENDE project and some of in site obtained results.

Abstract

International audience; The “Non Destructive Evaluation of containment nuclear plant structures” project (ENDE) is a French project developed with 8 partners. Its aims are to control the containment of structures by Non Destructive Testing with ultrasonic, electromagnetic and electric techniques. The results are than combined together to consolidate the final evaluation. Two different objectives are proposed, the first is to estimate concrete properties and the second to follow concrete damages and cracks. The 4 years project was carried out in two steps (in laboratory and on site). The first step consists in realizing two sets of tests on concrete specimens in the laboratory. Objectives of the first set are to characterize the material and to quantify the sensitivity of the Non Destructive Evaluation (NDE) to durability indicators (elasticity modulus, strength, porosity, water content) of the concrete. Two new indicators (thermal damage and stress applied) are tested in order to take into account a possibility of an accident (LLCA). Such accident induces relatively very severe conditions (pressure=4.2 bar and temperature T=180°C) inside the containment The second set was developed to evaluate damaged zones and cracks. The data fusion of measured NDE parameters is applied and developed for each result with two specific processes. It allows to select most sensitive and efficient approaches. The second step consists in an investigation of selected non destructives parameters on a real structures that is containment structures under varying pressure. The presented results were obtained on a mock-up of a containment wall realized in a 1/3 scale and constructed by EDF (Electricity of France) within the VeRCoRs program. These tests are realized in 2017 and simulate the ten-year nuclear power plants control in which the two functions regularly tested are: the concrete mechanical properties and the containment walls leakage. This paper presents the ENDE project and some of in site obtained results.

Abstract

The experiments are performed down the Edward Bailey valley, in the Renland peninsula, Scoresby Sund, Greenland. General purpose: ambient seismic noise recordings are obtained to characterize the geometry/structure of the valley the geometry/structure of the glaciers the microseismicity of the glacier, the friction process, crack orientation and mechanisms the seismic activity of glacial rivers, the relation between hydrological flow and noise spectrum the localization and characterization of sub-glacial flow from surface recordings. Seismic stations were composed of 3C broadband Trillium compact seismometer, a Cube datalogger and a 12V (D-cell types, stacked) battery pack.The experiment splits into three surveys performed at three different sites, one after the other, from july to august 2016. In the first experiment, we deploy 11 stations, 9 of them on a flat sandy area covering, partly, immobile ice that seems to be blocked between the Bailey Glacier (upstream) and the Apusinikajik glacier (downstream). The 9 sensors are placed a few hundreds of meters from the Apusinikajik lateral front, the last 2 are placed on the glacier next to the collapsing front. In the second and third experiment (chronologically speaking), we deploy 10 and 8 stations, respectively. Each deployment is performed along a Bailey valley transect. The first one intercepts the front-end of the glacier and the sub-glacial river exit (flow of several m3/s). The second transect is performed some 850m upstream. Waveform data are available from the GEOFON data centre, under network code 3H, and are embargoed until summer of 2019.

International audience; French Projects of Investment for the Future, called “Research for Nuclear Safety and RadiationProtection” have been initiated to further research on the causes, the management, the impact of theobserved nuclear accidents and to propose and validate solutions to limit the risk and the consequences.In this context the "Non Destructive Evaluation of nuclear plants containment” project” (ENDE) witheight partners (six research institutes and two industrials) supported by the “National Agency of Research”,proposes a methodology for the Non Destructive Evaluation of the containment capacity to fulfil its twomajor functions: strength and leak tightness. The NDE measurements will be performed underconditions representing the specific solicitations of a decennial inspection, and after or during areference accident.The project aims to develop NDEs, to combine them by data fusion and to select the most efficientcombinations with quantitative criteria.The work is based on:• Structuring the knowledge and developing an experimental plan.• Evaluating the material in representative conditions of accidental solicitations (water saturation,porosity, strength, elastic modulus, stress) and the diffuse thermal damage (micro cracks)• Monitoring the transition from diffuse to continuous damage (cracks) and monitoring a crack understress (opening and width).• Implementing ND Techniques on-site.The ND techniques retained after selection will be implemented on a containment mock-up on the 1/3scale. This mock-up developed by EDF (Electricité de France) will be available in 2016. It will becomparable to those of real size containment regarding pressure and temperature conditions. Abstract

Environmental seismology consists in studying the mechanical vibrations that originate from, or that have been affected by external causes, that is to say causes outside the solid Earth. This includes for instance the coupling between the solid Earth and the cryosphere, or the hydrosphere, the anthroposphere and the specific sources of vibration developing there. Environmental seismology also addresses the modifications of the wave propagation due to environmental forcing such as temperature and hydrology. Recent developments in data processing, together with increasing computational power and sensor concentration have led to original observations that allow for the development of this new field of seismology. In this article, we will particularly review how we can track and interpret tiny changes in the subsurface of the Earth related to external changes from modifications of the seismic wave propagation, with application to geomechanics, hydrology, and natural hazard. We will particularly demonstrate that, using ambient noise, we can track 1) thermal variations in the subsoil, in buildings or in rock columns; 2) the temporal and spatial evolution of a water table; 3) the evolution of the rigidity of the soil constituting a landslide, and especially the drop of rigidity preceding a failure event.

Abstract

International audience; Clay slopes are susceptible to suddenly liquefy into rapidly accelerating landslides, thereby threatening people and facilities in mountainous areas. Because the shear-wave velocity (V s ) characterizes the medium stiffness, this parameter can potentially be used to investigate the rheological behavior of clay materials before and during the solid-to-fluid transition associated to such landslide failures. Previous rheometrical studies performed on clay samples coming from Trièves landslides (French Alps) have established that this material behaves as a yield stress fluid with a marked viscosity bifurcation. When the applied stress reaches a critical level, the viscosity decreases abruptly, along with V s which tends to zero in the fully fluidized material. Here, we monitor the Rayleigh wave velocity (V R ) variations in a saturated clay layer placed in a flume and progressively brought to failure by tilting the device. Experiments performed on clay samples with different water contents show a significant relative drop in V R values (and hence in V s ) before the onset of the mass movement. Additional rheometrical analyses point out that this precursory drop in V s is presumably due to a complex transient rheological response of the clay. These new results confirm that V s variations constitute a good indicator for monitoring clay slope stability.

43. Seismic noise correlations to image structural and mechanical changes associated with the Mw 7.9 2008 Wenchuan earthquake

Abstract

We locate temporal changes of seismic wave speed and scattering properties of the crust associated with the 2008 Mw 7.9 Wenchuan earthquake. To that end, we analyze ambient seismic noise records from 2007 until the end of 2008 in the 1-3 s period band and in the 12-20 s period band measured in a region that covers the southern two thirds of the fault activated during the earthquake. To locate the changes, we use a refined imaging procedure based on the sensitivity of scattered waves to weak perturbations. This inverse method uses the radiative transfer approximation to describe the intensity of the noise correlation coda. Our results show that the largest structural changes are observed northeast of the Wenchuan epicenter, around the fault zone where aftershocks are distributed. The spatial and temporal characteristics of the behavior of the crust at depth around the Wenchuan earthquake suggest a postseismic and geology-dependent signature of the middle crust. We also observe a clear seasonal signature within the Sichuan basin at depth that we relate to the heavy rainfalls during the monsoon season. This seasonality can also be observed at the surface in form of a waveform decoherence. Our study highlights that seismic velocity changes, and waveform decoherence are independent measurements that are sensitive to different parameters and can thus give complementary information. In our study we also point out the value of studying the evolution of the changes at different times in the coda.

Abstract

Two functions are regularly tested on containment walls in order to anticipate a possible accident. The first is mechanical to resist a possible internal over-pressure and the second is to prevent leakage. The AAPR reference accident is the rupture of a pipe in the primary circuit of a nuclear plant. In this case, the pressure and temperature can reach 5 bar and 180°C in 20 seconds. The national project 'Non-destructive testing of the containment structures of nuclear plants' aims at studying the non-destructive techniques capable to evaluate the concrete properties and its damaging and cracks. This 4-year-project is segmented into two parts. The first consists in developing and selecting the most relevant NDEs in the laboratory to reach these goals. These evaluations are developed in conditions representing the real conditions of the stresses generated during ten-yearly visits of the plants or those related to an accident. The second part consists in applying the selected techniques to two containment structures under pressure. The first structure is proposed by ONERA and the second is a mockup of a containment wall on a 1/3 scale made by EDF within the VeRCoRs project. Communication is focused on the part of the project that concerns the damage and crack process characterization by means of NDT. The tests are done in 3 or 4 points bending in order to study the cracks' generation, their propagation, as well as their opening and closing. The main ultrasonic techniques developed concern linear or non-linear acoustic: acoustic emission [1], Locadiff [2], energy diffusion, surface wave's velocity and attenuation, DAET [3]. The recorded data contribute to providing the mapping of the investigated parameters, either in volume, in surface or globally. Digital image correlation is an important additional asset to validate the coherence of the data. The spatial normalization of the data in the specimen space allows proposing algorithms on the combination of the experimental data. The tests results are presented and they show the capacity and the limits of the evaluation of the volume, surface or global data. A data fusion procedure is associated with these results.
