6. State Control of Curriculum.

Abstract

The research in this paper was designed to assess the role of the individual state in directing and supervising curriculum matters within the state. Fifty surveys were mailed to the State Education Departments in each of the 50 states. Questions 1-5 of the survey were designed to determine the number of districts in each state, the number of students in each district, the amount of money spent on education at the state level, and the percentage of funds being directed toward education. These factors were included in order to see if they related to the type and magnitude of state control. The rest of the survey dealt with the specific type of state control exhibited by each state. It also asked the state to make an estimate of the amount of control it has over (1) subject matter, (2) implementation or methods, and (3) evaluation of existing curriculum. Of the 50 surveys distributed, 36 were returned. The results indicated that states have minimal control over local school districts. Regional differences were evident, with southern states exhibiting greater control than other retions. The results were interpreted to suggest that states should increase their involvement in curriculum revision. (RC)

11. The Dynamics of Curriculum Revision.

Abstract

This research study was undertaken in order to understand the dynamics of curriculum revision. The study examines reasons for change, persons involved in revision, frequency of revision, ways of evaluating a revised curriculum, and consistency of revision processes across school districts. Information was obtained through surveys distributed to suburban school districts in New York and Pennsylvania. Results indicate that (a) the most important planners and initiators of curriculum change are the teachers and principals, while the state has some control, and the student role is minimal; (b) no two schools use the same evaluation methods or have the same philosophy for what might be the most effective means of evaluation; (c) school districts are not satisfied with their current means of evaluation; and (d) curriculum revision occurs in a helter-skelter fashion and does not cross school districts. It is suggested that with increased state control and organization, the school districts could retain the flexibility they desire while improving the development and effectiveness of their curricula. Abstract

Men who have had a surgical procedure called orchiopexy that corrects undescended testicles in childhood may be more likely to be infertile as adults when compared to their peers. Fertility characteristics were compared among 421 men who had orchiopexy in childhood (study group) and 470 healthy age-matched men (control group). Among those men who had attempted to conceive a child with their wives, 10.5% of the men in the study group were infertile while only 5.4% of the control group were infertile.
