Ischemic preconditioning (PC) induced by a sub-lethal cerebral insult triggers brain tolerance against a subsequent severe injury through diverse mechanisms, including the modulation of the immune system. Tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α-stimulated gene 6 (TSG-6), a hyaluronate (HA)-binding protein, has recently been involved in the regulation of the neuroimmune response following ischemic stroke. Thus, we aimed at assessing whether the neuroprotective effects of ischemic PC involve the modulation of TSG-6 in a murine model of transient middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAo). The expression of TSG-6 was significantly elevated in the ischemic cortex of mice subjected to 1 h MCAo followed by 24 h reperfusion, while this effect was further potentiated (p < 0.05 vs. MCAo) by pre-exposure to ischemic PC (i.e., 15 min MCAo) 72 h before. By immunofluorescence analysis, we detected TSG-6 expression mainly in astrocytes and myeloid cells populating the lesioned cerebral cortex, with a more intense signal in tissue from mice pre-exposed to ischemic PC. By contrast, levels of TSG-6 were reduced after 24 h of reperfusion in plasma (p < 0.05 vs. SHAM), but were dramatically elevated when severe ischemia (1 h MCAo) was preceded by ischemic PC (p < 0.001 vs. MCAo) that also resulted in significant neuroprotection. In conclusion, our data demonstrate that neuroprotection exerted by ischemic PC is associated with the elevation of TSG-6 protein levels both in the brain and in plasma, further underscoring the beneficial effects of this endogenous modulator of the immune system.

This article is focused on the valorization of the cultural heritage represented by sulphur mines in Sicily, Italy. In particular, it represents a first approach finalized to create geo-touristic routes and improve the knowledge of the cultural and industrial Sicilian sulphur heritage. For this purpose, a geographic information system (GIS) was used to create a specific database of the study area. At the same time, a careful territorial analysis was carried out to design a possible sulphur cultural tourist itinerary, following the regional Sicilian laws of the 1990s. In order to achieve the final goal, different actions were preformed, including collection of bibliographic data and reports, sites surveys to define the actual state of the sites, and collaboration with public and private bodies such as universities, Institute for Environmental Protection and Research (ISPRA), local governments and associations. The results achieved could represent a good grow opportunity for an economic and touristic growth. In particular, the creation of the Sulphur Cultural Itinerary represented a good way to increase the Sicilian tourist attraction. The itinerary was focused on the data available on the Touring Club's guidebook, but there were differences and improvements. The main differences concerned both the starting point, for its notable landscape, naturalistic and scientific values, and the itinerary roads, some of which were no longer accessible. The outcome reached was a starting point for all stakeholders of geoheritage, such as municipalities, tourism agencies and academics.

Chest trauma is the leading cause of death in people under 40. It is estimated to cause around 140,000 deaths each year. The key aims are to reduce mortality and the impact of associated complications to expedite recovery and to restore patient’s conditions. The recognition of lesions through appropriate imaging and early treatment already in the emergency department are fundamental. The majority can be managed in a non-surgical way, but especially after traumatic cardiac arrest, a surgical approach is required. One of the most important surgical procedures is the Emergency Department Thoracotomy (EDT). The aim of this review is to provide a comprehensive synthesis about the management of thoracic trauma, the surgical procedures, accepted indications, and technical details adopted during the most important surgical procedures for different thoracic trauma injuries. Literature from 1990 to 2023 was retrieved from multiple databases and reviewed. It is also important to emphasize the medico-legal implications of this type of trauma, both from the point of view of collaboration with the judicial authority and in the prevention of any litigation.

Questo contributo presenta uno studio preliminare su COLL-IT, un test di valutazione della competenza collocazionale in italiano L2/LS basato su un sillabo di riferimento delle collocazioni verbo-nome per i livelli B1, B2 e C del QCER. COLL-IT è un test di completamento a scelta multipla volto a valutare la capacità degli apprendenti di abbinare ad una determinata base il collocato appropriato ed è stato somministrato a 103 apprendenti ispanofoni. Le analisi statistiche rivelano risultati incoraggianti in termini di affidabilità del punteggio e forniscono prove preliminari a sostegno della validità del costrutto. Nonostante una serie di limitazioni che potranno essere superate mediante future somministrazioni, COLL-IT rappresenta un contributo innovativo alla ricerca sulla competenza collocazionale in italiano L2/LS. COLL-IT: an instrument for assessing collocational competence. Realisation and administration of a test on verb-name collocations for learners of Italian L2/LS This contribution presents a preliminary study on COLL-IT, a collocational competence test for learners of Italian L2/LS. The test assesses learners’ ability to match appropriate verb-noun pairs and is based on a reference syllabus of collocations at B1, B2, and C CEFR levels. It was administered to 103 Spanish speaking learners of Italian. Statistical analyses reveal encouraging outcomes in terms of score reliability and provide preliminary evidence supporting construct validity. Despite a number of limitations that may be overcome in future administrations, COLL-IT makes an innovative contribution to collocational competence testing in Italian L2/LS research.

Objective Osteoarthritis (OA), particularly knee OA, is a leading cause of disability and poses significant challenges in healthcare management. Mobile applications (apps) have emerged as potential tools to support therapeutic exercise by providing tailored programs, instructional content, and progress tracking. This systematic review evaluates the efficacy of mobile apps in enhancing therapeutic exercise for knee OA management. Methods A systematic review was conducted, analyzing randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to assess the impact of mobile apps on pain and knee function in patients with OA. The review followed the Cochrane Handbook guidelines and was registered with PROSPERO. Inclusion criteria focused on RCTs involving adults aged 40 and above with knee OA, and outcomes were measured based on pain intensity and knee function. Results Five RCTs met the inclusion criteria. The results varied: while some studies demonstrated minor improvements in pain and function with app-based interventions, others showed comparable effectiveness to traditional methods. The review highlights the potential of mobile apps to offer benefits in managing knee OA, though outcomes were inconsistent due to intervention and population heterogeneity. Conclusion Despite the low certainty of evidence, mobile app-based interventions appear to have a positive impact on reducing pain and improving physical function in patients with knee OA. Continued research is essential to better understand the effectiveness and long-term impact of mobile technology in OA management, underscoring the value of digital health interventions in enhancing patient care.

Objective: The aim of this study is to evaluate the implementation of the elements of enhanced recovery (ERAS) protocols in patients undergoing cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) for metastatic ovarian cancer. ERAS protocols have shown improvement in the perioperative outcomes of patients who underwent cytoreductive surgery for metastatic ovarian cancer by reducing the length of stay as well as the postoperative complications and by improving patients’ postoperative experience. Methods: This is a feasibility study involving retrospective analysis from (31) patients who underwent cytoreductive surgery and HIPEC versus (35) a control group that underwent cytoreductive surgery only, prior to the introduction of the HIPEC programme for metastatic ovarian cancer. All patients had undergone neoadjuvant chemotherapy prior to surgery. We compared the compliance for each element of the ERAS protocol between the two study groups. Results: We analyzed data from 66 patients, 31 in HIPEC group and 35 in the control goup. We found no significant difference in the patients’ characteristics between the two groups and there were no differences in the implementation of 8 elements of the ERAS protocols (100 % for both groups). Health risks are often overlooked when the short-term consequences are not immediately apparent. During restoration work, cleaning actions can generate particles that pose health risks to workers through inhalation. This is particularly true in the case of asbestos fibres that might be spread out from the laser cleaning of buildings or heritage artifacts made of stone, such as serpentinite and other ultramafic rocks, that have a high probability of containing asbestos (e.g., chrysotile, tremolite asbestos, actinolite asbestos). To show workers the importance of wearing proper protection to prevent health injuries, several serpentinite samples, ascertained to contain asbestos minerals by specific investigations, have been laser ablated using ad hoc modified equipment in order to collocate a HEPA filter prone to collect all dust emitted during ablation. The powder deposited on the surface of these filters after laser ablation was analyzed, by Powder X -ray Diffraction (PXRD), Transmission Electron Microscopy combined with Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (TEM/EDS), micro-Raman spectroscopy (μ-Raman) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR/ATR). The results confirmed the presence of asbestos fibres during the laser ablation of rocks containing Naturally Occurring Asbestos (NOA), emphasizing the importance of wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) during these procedures. Noteworthy, approximately 33 % of the analyzed fibres met the WHO criteria in size for respirable fibres. Furthermore, through our experiments, we also demonstrated that using tools that integrate filters into working tools would definitively further decrease the risk of fibres inhalation to workers.

Q fever is a widespread zoonotic disease caused by the obligate intracellular bacterium Coxiella burnetii, primarily transmitted through the inhalation of contaminated aerosols. This study aimed to detect C. burnetii in two Sicilian sheep flocks, with no better defined reproductive disorders reported by the farmers. Blood, individual and bulk milk, ticks, and conjunctival swabs were collected from both flocks (A and B). Real-time and traditional PCRs were carried out to detect C. burnetii DNA and anti-C. burnetii antibodies were searched using an ELISA. In terms of Farm A, C. burnetii DNA was detected in 7.1% of blood samples, 20% of individual milk samples, bulk milk, 66.6% of conjunctival swabs, and in all the examined tick pools. Anti-C. burnetii antibodies were found in 77.0% of sera, 92.5% of individual milk samples, and bulk milk. In terms of Farm B, C. burnetii DNA was detected in 3.8% of blood samples, 39.4% of individual milk samples, bulk milk, 100% of conjunctival swabs, and in all tick pools; anti-C. burnetii antibodies were present in 53.6% of sera, 73.2% of milk samples, and in bulk milk. Our results highlight the high diffusion of C. burnetii in the two outbreaks, with widespread pathogen circulation, significant shedding in dairy products, and high environmental contamination, highlighting the need for enhanced surveillance and control measures in dairy sheep farms.

A major challenge in coronavirus vaccination and treatment is to counteract rapid viral evolution and mutations. Here we demonstrate that CRISPR-Cas13d offers a broad-spectrum antiviral (BSA) to inhibit many SARS-CoV-2 variants and diverse human coronavirus strains with >99% reduction of the viral titer. We show that Cas13d-mediated coronavirus inhibition is dependent on the crRNA cellular spatial colocalization with Cas13d and target viral RNA. Cas13d can significantly enhance the therapeutic effects of diverse small molecule drugs against coronaviruses for prophylaxis or treatment purposes, and the best combination reduced viral titer by over four orders of magnitude. Using lipid nanoparticle-mediated RNA delivery, we demonstrate that the Cas13d system can effectively treat infection from multiple variants of coronavirus, including Omicron SARS-CoV-2, in human primary airway epithelium air-liquid interface (ALI) cultures. Our study establishes CRISPR-Cas13 as a BSA which is highly complementary to existing vaccination and antiviral treatment strategies.

This study aims to compare the effects of some chemical agents on the removal of calcareous encrustations, which are characterized by the presence of both calcium and silicon. The experimentation was conducted during the conservation treatments of Cerriglio’s nymphaeum (Massa Lubrense, Naples, Italy). Tests were carried out in the laboratory on specimens and in situ to define the most efficient choice between several chelant agents, in the recovery of calcium and silicon, using ICP/OES and spectrocolorimetric and microscopic analyses.

Background: COVID-19 caused by SARS-CoV-2 virus is characterized by respiratory compromise and immune system involvement, even leading to serious disorders, such as cytokine storm. Methods: We then conducted a literature review on the topic of sepsis and covid-19, and in parallel conducted an experimental study on the histological finding of patients who died from SARS-Covid 19 infection and a control group. Results: Sepsis associated with covid-19 infection has some similarities and differences from that from other causes. Conclusion: In this paper the complex interplay between the 2 disorders was discussed, focusing on the similarities and on the effect that one could have on the other. A preliminary experimental section that demonstrates the multisystemic involvement in subjects who die from SARS-CoV-2 is also proposed.

The presented research aims to define a parametric modelling methodology that allows, in short time and at a sustainable cost, the digital acquisition, modelling and semantic structuring of urban city blocks to facilitate 3D city modelling applied to historic centres. The methodology is based on field surveying and derives 3D data for the realisation of a parametric City Information Model (CIM). This is pursued through the adoption of parametric modelling as main method combined with AI procedures like supervised machine learning. In particular, the Visual Programming Language (VPL) Grasshopper is adopted as main working environment. The methodology proposed, called Scan-to-CIM, is developed to automate the cognitive operations of interpretation and input of surveying data performed in the field in order to create LoD4 city block models in a semi-automatic way. The proposed Scan-to-CIM methodology is applied to a city block located in the historic centre of Catania, Italy.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) and variants has led to significant mortality. We recently reported that an RNA-targeting CRISPR-Cas13 system, called prophylactic antiviral CRISPR in human cells (PAC-MAN), offered an antiviral strategy against SARS-CoV-2 and influenza A virus. Here, we expand in silico analysis to use PAC-MAN to target a broad spectrum of human- or livestock-infectious RNA viruses with high specificity, coverage, and predicted efficiency. Our analysis reveals that a minimal set of 14 CRISPR RNAs (crRNAs) is able to target >90% of human-infectious viruses across 10 RNA virus families. We predict that a set of 5 experimentally validated crRNAs can target new SARS-CoV-2 variant sequences with zero mismatches. We also build an online resource (crispr-pacman.stanford.edu) to support community use of CRISPR-Cas13 for broad-spectrum RNA virus targeting. Our work provides a new bioinformatic resource for using CRISPR-Cas13 to target diverse RNA viruses to facilitate the development of CRISPR-based antivirals.

Most of the artworks stored in museums are often kept in inappropriate climatic and environmental conditions that facilitate the formation and growth of microorganisms, such as fungi, which are responsible for many types of biodegradation phenomena. To mitigate and prevent these deteriorative processes, functionalized packaging materials can be used for the storage and handling of artworks. The aim of this study was to develop a potential anti-biodeterioration coating suitable for packaging purposes. TiO2 and ZnO doped with different amounts of Ag (0.5 wt%, 1 wt%, and 3 wt%) were synthesized and dispersed in polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and acrylic resin (Paraloid B72), then applied on different types of packaging materials (cellulose and the high-density spunbound polyethylene fiber Tyvek®, materials that are frequently used as packaging in museums). Analytical investigations (SEM/EDS, Raman, FTIR, and XRD) were employed to assess dispersion on the packaging material. Furthermore, resistance against biodeteriogens was assessed using Cladosporium sp., a bioluminometer, to define the biocidal efficacy.

Several researchers recognize the importance of plants as effective tools for environmental biomonitoring. The black poplar (Populus nigra L.) often emerges as a useful bioindicator of air quality in urban environments, where this tree species is widely employed for urban areas. Here, we used ICP-MS analysis to assess the presence and concentration of trace elements, with a special focus on heavy metals (HMs), in black poplar leaves and soil samples from three urbanized sites showing varying degrees of environmental quality. Specifically, the foliar concentrations of Zn (173.3 ppm), Cd (0.7 ppm), Co (1.1 ppm) and As (0.2 ppm) exceeded reference values for unpolluted sites, indicating potential environmental hazards. Additionally, we correlated the foliar concentrations of HMs with those quantified in soil and with air quality data provided by the regional air quality-monitoring network. Subsequently, we estimated the values of foliar fluctuating asymmetry, and evaluated their relationships with HM concentrations in both leaves and soil. Our results suggest that element concentrations in black poplar leaves are related to soil contamination and atmospheric quality, and the extent depends on the proximity to relevant pollution sources. Furthermore, the study species showed a pronounced accumulation capacity for some HMs (i.e., Zn, Cd) commonly found in particulate matter. The extent of foliar fluctuating asymmetry is related to atmospheric quality and HM soil concentration, possibly because of the growth anomalies induced by this kind of environmental contamination. Overall, our data indicate the study species can supply an effective biomonitoring service in urbanized contexts, offering valuable insights into the occurrence and biological implications of heavy metal contamination.

Bergamot flavonoids have been shown to prevent metabolic syndrome, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and stimulate autophagy in animal models and patients. To investigate further the mechanism of polyphenol-dependent effects, we performed a RT2-PCR array analysis on 168 metabolism, transport and autophagy-related genes expressed in rat livers exposed for 14 weeks to different diets: standard, cafeteria (CAF) and CAF diet supplemented with 50 mg/kg of bergamot polyphenol fraction (BPF). CAF diet caused a strong upregulation of gluconeogenesis pathway (Gck, Pck2) and a moderate (>1.7 fold) induction of genes regulating lipogenesis (Srebf1, Pparg, Xbp1), lipid and cholesterol transport or lipolysis (Fabp3, Apoa1, Lpl) and inflammation (Il6, Il10, Tnf). However, only one β-oxidation gene (Cpt1a) and a few autophagy genes were differentially expressed in CAF rats compared to controls. While most of these transcripts were significantly modulated by BPF, we observed a particularly potent effect on lipogenesis genes, like Acly, Acaca and Fasn, which were suppressed far below the mRNA levels of control livers as confirmed by alternative primers-based RT2-PCR analysis and western blotting. These effects were accompanied by downregulation of pro-inflammatory cytokines (Il6, Tnfa, and Il10) and diabetes-related genes. Few autophagy (Map1Lc3a, Dapk) and no β-oxidation gene expression changes were observed compared to CAF group. In conclusion, chronic BPF supplementation efficiently prevents NAFLD by modulating hepatic energy metabolism and inflammation gene expression programs, with no effect on β-oxidation, but profound suppression of de novo lipogenesis.

Carbon dioxide (CO2) is an endogenous molecule produced by cellular respiration and therefore present in our body and in the atmosphere. It is known that, at high levels, CO2 causes fatal toxic effects. The production of CO2 can prove particularly dangerous in closed and unventilated environments. Although some cases of death due to CO2 are described in forensic literature, today this diagnosis of CO2 intoxication on cadaver is still a challenge as it is a volatile endogenous molecule and strongly increased after death due to anoxia. In this paper, we describe six cases of simultaneous CO2 intoxications which was caused by a fermentation of grape must in a closed environment. Four people died while the other two were rescued. Scene investigation with measurement of environmental gas levels using sensors was performed. Autopsies were carried out with toxicological investigations and histopathological analyses. Finally, a review of the scientific literature on deaths related to fermenting grape gas was carried out. The results demonstrated toxic levels of CO2 at the scene. The corpses showed initial transformative phenomena such as skin discoloration and slippage, while toxicological investigations demonstrated a peak of HbCO2 (carbaminohemoglobin) with alcohol positivity in the blood of the deceased subjects. Histopathological investigations showed must yeasts (Saccharomyces) in the pulmonary alveoli. The paper reports the procedures performed proposing the introduction of new experimental investigations for the post-mortem diagnosis of CO2 intoxication with a forensic diagnostic protocol.

BackgroundCAR-T-related deaths observed worldwide are rare. The underlying pathogenetic mechanisms are the subject of study, as are the findings that enable diagnosis. A systematic literature search of the PubMed database and a critical review of the collected studies were conducted from the inception of this database until January 2023. The aim of the study is to determine when death is related to CAR-T cell therapy and to develop a shareable diagnostic algorithm.MethodsThe database was searched by combining and meshing the terms (“CAR-t” OR “CART”) AND (“Pathology” OR “Histology” OR “Histological” OR “Autopsy”) AND (“Heart” OR “Cardiac” OR “Nervous System” OR “Kidney” OR “Liver”) with 34 results and also the terms: [(Lethal effect) OR (Death)] AND (CAR-T therapy) with 52 results in titles, abstracts, and keywords [all fields]. One hundred scientific articles were examined, 14 of which were additional records identified through other sources. Fifteen records were included in the review.ResultsNeuronal death, neuronal edema, perivascular edema, perivascular and intraparenchymal hemorrhagic extravasation, as well as perivascular plasmatodendrosis, have been observed in cases with fatal cerebral edema. A cross-reactivity of CAR-T cells in cases of fatal encephalopathy can be hypothesized when, in addition to the increased vascular permeability, there is also a perivascular lymphocyte infiltrate, which appears to be a common factor among most authors.ConclusionMost CAR-T-related deaths are associated with blood–brain barrier breakdown, central nervous system cell damage, and infiltrated T cells. Further autopsies and microscopic investigations would shed more light on the lethal toxicity related to CAR-T cells. A differential diagnosis of CAR-T-related death is crucial to identifying adverse events. In this article, we propose an algorithm that could facilitate the comparison of findings through a systematic approach. Despite toxicity cases, CAR-T therapy continues to stand out as the most innovative treatment within the field of oncology, and emerging strategies hold the promise of delivering safer therapies in future.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, has highlighted the need for antiviral approaches that can target emerging viruses with no effective vaccines or pharmaceuticals. Here, we demonstrate a CRISPR-Cas13-based strategy, PAC-MAN (prophylactic antiviral CRISPR in human cells), for viral inhibition that can effectively degrade RNA from SARS-CoV-2 sequences and live influenza A virus (IAV) in human lung epithelial cells. We designed and screened CRISPR RNAs (crRNAs) targeting conserved viral regions and identified functional crRNAs targeting SARS-CoV-2. This approach effectively reduced H1N1 IAV load in respiratory epithelial cells. Our bioinformatic analysis showed that a group of only six crRNAs can target more than 90% of all coronaviruses. With the development of a safe and effective system for respiratory tract delivery, PAC-MAN has the potential to become an important pan-coronavirus inhibition strategy.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the pharmacokinetics of ritonavir-boosted fosamprenavir during pregnancy and postpartum. Amprenavir (the active moiety of fosamprenavir) and ritonavir intensive pharmacokinetic evaluations were performed at steady state during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy and postpartum. Plasma concentrations of amprenavir and ritonavir were measured using high-performance liquid chromatography. The target amprenavir area under the concentration-versus-time curve (AUC) was higher than the 10th percentile (27.7 μg · h/ml) of the median area under the curve for ritonavir-boosted fosamprenavir in adults receiving twice-daily fosamprenavir-ritonavir at 700 mg/100 mg. Kidney transplantation is the best available renal replacement therapy for patients with end-stage kidney disease and is associated with better quality of life and patient survival compared with dialysis. However, despite the significant technical and pharmaceutical advances in this field, kidney transplant recipients are still characterized by reduced long-term graft survival. In fact, almost half of the patients lose their allograft after 15–20 years. Most of the conditions leading to graft loss are triggered by the activation of a large immune-inflammatory machinery. In this context, several inflammatory markers have been identified, and the deregulation of the inflammasome (NLRP3, NLRP1, NLRC4, AIM2), a multiprotein complex activated by either whole pathogens (including fungi, bacteria, and viruses) or host-derived molecules, seems to play a pivotal pathogenetic role. However, the biological mechanisms leading to inflammasome activation in patients developing post-transplant complications (including, ischemia-reperfusion injury, rejections, infections) are still largely unrecognized, and only a few research reports, reviewed in this manuscript, have addressed the association between abnormal activation of this pathway and the onset/development of major clinical effects. Finally, the regulation of the inflammasome machinery could represent in future a valuable therapeutic target in kidney transplantation.

In Europe, the mental health law legal framework has had several changes throughout the years to achieve and develop new reforms, better mental health care, and protect the human rights of patients. The UK national data shows rising detention rates and the disproportionate use of the legal framework among people from black and minority ethnic groups. At the national level, compulsory admissions are lower in Italy; it also shows that it has increased in the last few years in both countries. The lack of ethnic national data, especially in Italy, limited the ability to understand compulsory admission, discrimination, and stigma in mental health. The present study aims to compare the legal framework of mental health law and compulsory hospital admission in Italy and the UK. A review of each country’s latest amendments to mental health law and the number of compulsory hospital admissions was conducted to understand the impact of changes in mental health care.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a disorder that causes changes in both the structure and function of the kidneys, causing complications such as hypertension, edema, and oliguria. Renal fibrosis is also a common pathological feature of CKD. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are endopeptidases that degrade extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins. The proteinase domain consists of a zinc ion in the active site, which contributes to its stabilization with another zinc and three calcium structural ions. Many cellular processes are controlled by MMPs, such as cell–cell interactions and various signaling pathways, while they are also involved in degrading substrates on cell surfaces. Tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMPs) are key regulators of metalloproteinases, and both are involved in regulating cell turnover, the regulation, and the progression of fibrosis and apoptosis in the tissue. MMPs play a role in renal fibrosis, such as the tubular cell epithelial–mesenchymal transition (TEM), activation of resident fibroblasts, endothelial–mesenchymal transition (EndoMT), and pericyte–myofibroblast transdifferentiation. This review aims to show the mechanisms through which MMPs contribute to renal fibrosis, paying particular attention to MMP-9 and the epithelial–mesenchymal transition.

Neck infections are often prone to being underestimated and can manifest insidiously. The spread of infection can lead to translocation into thoracic areas, causing descending necrotizing mediastinitis (DNM). However, the application of the post-mortem approach in such cases is not well-described in the literature. A literature review was carried out according to the PRISMA methods. Nine papers were included in the final review, revealing different levels of involvement of neck layers that can be linked to different causes. Expertise with respect to the anatomy of the fasciae and spaces of the neck enables an understanding of the pathogenesis of DNM. However, a clear autoptic description was not provided in any of the articles. Therefore, we also employed a practical post-mortem approach to cases of death due to DNM. It is fundamental for pathologists to identify the exact head and neck structures involved. Providing dissectors with support from an otolaryngologist could be useful. This paper could help address such difficult cases.

Modern society and industrial development rely heavily on the availability of freshwater and minerals. Seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) has been widely adopted for freshwater supply, although many questions have arisen about its environmental sustainability owing to the disposal of hypersaline rejected solutions (brine). This scenario has accelerated significant developments towards the hybridization of SWRO with membrane distillation–crystallization (MD-MCr), which can extract water and minerals from spent brine. Nevertheless, the substantial specific energy consumption associated with MD-MCr remains a significant limitation. In this work, energy harvesting was secured from renewables by hotspots embodied in the membranes, implementing the revolutionary approach of brine mining via photothermal membrane crystallization (PhMCr). This method employs self-heating nanostructured interfaces under solar radiation to enhance water evaporation, creating a carefully controlled supersaturated environment responsible for the extraction of minerals. Photothermal mixed matrix photothermal membranes (MMMs) were developed by incorporating graphene oxide (GO) or carbon black (CB) into polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) solubilized in an eco-friendly solvent (i.e., triethyl phosphate (TEP)). MMMs were prepared using non-solvent-induced phase separation (NIPS). The effect of GO or GB on the morphology of MMMs and the photothermal behavior was examined. Light-to-heat conversion was used in PhMCr experiments to facilitate the evaporation of water from the SWRO brine to supersaturation, leading to sodium chloride (NaCl) nucleation and crystallization. Overall, the results indicate exciting perspectives of PhMCr in brine valorization for a sustainable desalination industry.

The Eurasian woodcock (Scolopax rusticola) belongs to those bird species that make systematic migratory flights in spring and autumn in search of favorable breeding and wintering areas. These specimens arrive in the Mediterranean Area from northeastern European countries during the autumn season. The purpose of this study was to assess whether woodcocks can carry antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) along their migratory routes. Although the role of migratory birds in the spread of some zoonotic diseases (of viral and bacterial etiology) has been elucidated, the role of these animals in the spread of antibiotic resistance has not yet been clarified. In this study, we analyzed the presence of beta-lactam antibiotic resistance genes. The study was conducted on 69 strains from 60 cloacal swabs belonging to an equal number of animals shot during the 2022–2023 hunting season in Sicily, Italy. An antibiogram was performed on all strains using the microdilution method (MIC) and beta-lactam resistance genes were investigated. The strains tested showed no phenotypic resistance to any of the 13 antibiotics tested; however, four isolates of Enterobacter cloacae and three of Klebsiella oxytoca were found to carry the blaIMP-70, blaVIM-35, blaNDM-5 and blaOXA-1 genes. Our results confirm the importance of monitoring antimicrobial resistance among migratory animals capable of long-distance bacteria spread.
