2. Micro-vorticity fluctuations affect the structure of thin fluid films

Abstract

The dynamic interaction of complex fluid interfaces is highly sensitive to near-contact interactions occurring at the scale of ten of nanometers. Such interactions are difficult to analyse because they couple self-consistently to the dynamic morphology of the evolving interface, as well as to the hydrodynamics of the interstitial fluid film. In this work, we show that, above a given magnitude threshold, near-contact interactions trigger non-trivial micro-vorticity patterns, which in turn affect the effective near-contact interactions, giving rise to persistent fluctuating ripples at the fluid interface. In such regime, near-contact interactions may significantly affect the macroscopic arrangement of emulsion configurations, such as those arising in soft-flowing microfluidic crystals.

Abstract

According to the national balance sheets of the most advanced economies, despite a recent sharp decline in per capita net wealth, Italian private households present a higher rate among the wealthiest and least indebted in Europe. Recently, the COVID-19 outbreak caused a new leap in households' savings worldwide, particularly in advanced economies and Italy. This study underlines that using advanced analytics tools, household saving behaviour information, and big data analytics may support data-driven decision approaches addressing the management of complex relationships in the financial arena. More specifically, using exploratory and predictive analyses based on big data analytics and machine learning, this study aims to provide extensive customer profiling in the household saving sector in Italy, supporting a data-driven decision-making approach. A profiling of household savings has been defined using the information provided by big data analysis. To proceed in this direction, the hardware and software requirements necessary to perform data processing were considered in the first phase of the study. Data collection was performed according to the so-called extract, transform, load (ETL) process. The contribution of this study lies in the results obtained in terms of data analytics over a dataset that accounts for the purchasing behaviour of almost 20 million postal savers. The clustering algorithm is highly efficient and scales well for large datasets. K-means clustering can be implemented within the MapReduce computational framework. Therefore, the overall procedure proposed here can be easily extended to big data using parallel computing and software implementing MapReduce, such as Hadoop and Spark.

Abstract

Multidimensional phenomena are usually characterized by nested latent dimensions associated, in turn, with observed variables. These phenomena, for instance, poverty, well-being, and sustainable development, can often differ across countries, or cities within countries, in terms of dimensions, other than in their relationships to each other, on the one hand, and their importance in the definition of the general concept, on the other hand. This paper discusses several parsimonious structures of the covariance matrix reconstructing relationships among variables which can be implemented in Gaussian mixture models to study complex phenomena in heterogeneous populations.

Abstract

In this paper we frame the problem of obtaining estimates from the sur- vey on the employment status of graduates in Italy as a Small Area Estimation problem because of unit nonresponse. We propose to use generalized linear mixed models and to include two variables that can be considered proxies of the response propensity among the set of covariates to make the MAR assumption more tenable. Estimates for degree programmes are obtained as (semi-parametric) empirical best predictions.

After a review of the class of discrete latent variable models in terms of formulation and estimation methods, recent advances and perspectives regarding these models are illustrated. We consider in detail the stochastic block model for social networks and models for spatio-temporal data. Among these developments, we discuss, in particular, the analysis of longitudinal compositional data about expenditures of the Spanish regions over several decades.

Abstract

The dynamic stochastic blockmodel is commonly used to analyze longitudinal network data when multiple snapshots are observed over time. The variational expectation-maximization (VEM) algorithm is typically employed for maximum likelihood inference to allocate nodes to groups dynamically. To address the problem of multiple local maxima, which may arise in this context, we propose modifying the VEM according to an evolutionary algorithm to explore the whole parameter space. A simulation study on dynamic networks and an application illustrate the proposal comparing the performance with that of the VEM algorithm.

16. Seismic source analysis for recent seismicity at Mt. Vesuvius (southern Italy): preliminary results from a full waveform inversion approach

Abstract

The detailed analysis of volcanic seismicity can allow the identification of the processes occurring in a volcanic system and obtain information about its state and evolution. In the last decades, the seismicity of Mt. Vesuvius has consisted mainly of volcano-tectonic (VT) seismic events, with an average rate of some hundreds of earthquakes per year with magnitudes between −1.0 and 2.5, located up to 6-7 km below sea level (b.s.l.). Unusual low-frequency (LF) seismicity has also been observed, localized at a depth of 5-7 km. Previous seismic source analyses applied conventional methodologies based on first pulse characteristics, which are difficult due to high background noise, low magnitude and emergent first arrivals. To overcome these challenges, we analyze here the Mt. Vesuvius seismicity over the past 20 years by using a robust probabilistic seismic source inversion tool. This methodology provides the results in terms of moment tensor solutions estimated by using seismic waveforms and waveform attributes. In agreement with previous studies, two clusters of seismicity are clearly evidenced, both in terms of depth (0-4 km and 5-7 km b.sl. for VT and LF events, respectively) and frequency content (5-15 Hz and 2-6 Hz, respectively). Our preliminary results show that: a) the probabilistic approach for the whole waveform inversion provides acceptable results even for small magnitude earthquakes, and b) both seismicity clusters show strongly heterogeneous focal mechanisms, confirming past literature studies. Abstract

Despite a recent sharp decline in per-capita net wealth, according to the national balance sheets of the most advanced economies, Italian private households present higher rate among the wealthiest and least indebted in Europe (Acciari and Morelli, 2021). Italian personal precautionary saving bent represents a cultural trait of individual financial behaviour at a national level (Fuchs‐Schündeln et al., 2020). Nevertheless, recent demographic changes (i.e., households with multiple earners, increase in longevity, decline in fertility and so on) had a deep effect on household saving and its dynamic over time. Recently, the COVID-19 outbreak gave a new jump to the households’ savings worldwide, especially in the advanced economies (Romei, 2021) and also in Italy (Ercolani et al., 2021). This circumstance might depend on the unstable economic situation that leads consumers to adopt a more precautionary behaviour, which evolve in a high saving rate (Statista, 2021). Therefore, the research on this topic is crucial to predict future behaviours and finds a new, very relevant fellow in the support provided by digital transformation (Reis et al., 2018). On this stream, this study underlines as by virtue of advanced analytics tools, household saving behaviours information and big data analytics may support data-driven decision approaches addressed the managing of complex relationships in the financial arena. More punctually, by means of an exploratory and predictive analysis based on big data analytics and the use of machine learning, the aim of this study is to provide an extensive customer profiling in the household saving sector in Italy, supporting a data-driven decision-making approach.

Abstract

Objective. Problematic Social Media Use (PSMU) has an addictive potential for young users. The aim of this study was to show the prevalence of PSMU across Italian regions and its association with health complaints. Materials and methods. Data are gathered from the Italian 2018 Health Behaviour in School-aged Children survey using a representative sample of Italian adolescents aged 11, 13 and 15 years (50.6% males). Participants completed self-administered questionnaires assessing PSMU and health complaints. Results. PSMU affects 8.9% adolescents in Italy and the prevalence is quite consistent across regions. 13-year-olds girls showed the highest percentage of PSMU (13%). Problematic users of social media are more likely to report multiple somatic (OR = 1.84 [95% CI 1.82-1.85]) and psychological (OR = 2.60 [95% CI 2.58-2.63]) symptoms. Conclusions. PSMU represents a widespread problem in Italy. National prevention interventions are needed in order to promote a positive use of social media.

Abstract

Objective. The aim is to describe dietary habits and their association with socio-demographic characteristics in a large nationally representative sample of Italian adolescents aged 11, 13 and 15 years. Materials and methods. Data from the 2018 Italian Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) survey on 58,976 adolescents were analysed to determine eating habits. Logistic regression was used to investigate the association between incorrect dietary habits and potential predictors. Results. 38.3% of boys and 48.1% of girls skipped breakfast and 54.1% did not consume fruit and/or vegetables daily. 15.9% of boys and 11.3% of girls drank carbonated-sugary beverages at least once a day. Incorrect dietary habits were more common among boys, adolescents with lower socio-economic conditions, residents in Southern Italy and those spending more time watching TV. Italian adolescents were more likely to have incorrect dietary habits compared with those from most other countries involved in 2018 HBSC. Conclusions. Action is needed to improve dietary habits among adolescents.

Abstract

Despite a recent sharp decline in per-capita net wealth, according to the national balance sheets of the most advanced economies, Italian private households present higher rate among the wealthiest and least indebted in Europe (Acciari and Morelli, 2021). Italian personal precautionary saving bent represents a cultural trait of individual financial behaviour at a national level (Fuchs‐Schündeln et al., 2020). Nevertheless, recent demographic changes (i.e., households with multiple earners, increase in longevity, decline in fertility and so on) had a deep effect on household saving and its dynamic over time. Recently, the COVID-19 outbreak gave a new jump to the households’ savings worldwide, especially in the advanced economies (Romei, 2021) and also in Italy (Ercolani et al., 2021). This circumstance might depend on the unstable economic situation that leads consumers to adopt a more precautionary behaviour, which evolve in a high saving rate (Statista, 2021). Therefore, the research on this topic is crucial to predict future behaviours and finds a new, very relevant fellow in the support provided by digital transformation (Reis et al., 2018). On this stream, this study underlines as by virtue of advanced analytics tools, household saving behaviours information and big data analytics may support data-driven decision approaches addressed the managing of complex relationships in the financial arena. More punctually, by means of an exploratory and predictive analysis based on big data analytics and the use of machine learning, the aim of this study is to provide an extensive customer profiling in the household saving sector in Italy, supporting a data-driven decision-making approach.

Abstract

In this paper, we numerically investigate the breakup dynamics of droplets in an emulsion flowing in a tapered microchannel with a narrow constriction. The mesoscale approach for multicomponent fluids with near contact interactions is shown to capture the deformation and breakup dynamics of droplets interacting within the constriction, in agreement with experimental evidence. In addition, it permits us to investigate in detail the hydrodynamic phenomena occurring during breakup stages. Finally, a suitable deformation parameter is introduced and analyzed to characterize the state of deformation of the system by inspecting pairs of interacting droplets flowing in the narrow channel.

Abstract

This study examines the relationship between the board of directors and cash holdings before and during the global financial crisis. We focus on the main demographic characteristics of the board: CEO duality, independent directors, and board size. Employing a sample of listed Italian industrial firms over the period 2003–2013, our empirical findings show the different behaviors of the members of the board of directors in determining cash holdings in normal conditions and during a crisis. In normal periods, in line with agency theory, a vigilant board—characterized by a high proportion of independent directors—reduces cash holdings. Diversely, the presence of CEO duality and larger boards increase cash holdings. In times of crisis, members of the board of directors abandon their monitoring duties or opportunistic behavior and become more participative to help the firm to survive. The results suggest that the effects of the board of directors’ characteristics are contingent on a firm’s external environment.

Abstract

Spatially dependent residuals arise as a result of missing or misspecified spatial variables in a model. Such dependence is observed in different areas, including environmental, epidemiological, social and economic studies. It is crucial to take the dependence into modelling consideration to avoid spurious associations between variables of interest or to avoid wrong inferential conclusions due to underestimated uncertainties. An insight about the scales at which spatial dependence exist can help to comprehend the underlying physical process and to select suitable spatial interpolation methods. In this paper, we propose two Monte Carlo permutation tests to (1) assess the existence of overall spatial dependence and (2) assess spatial dependence at small scales, respectively. A p-value combination method is used to improve statistical power of the tests. We conduct a simulation study to reveal the advantages of our proposed methods in terms of type I error rate and statistical power. The tests are implemented in an open-source R package variosig.

Abstract

In the present paper, we address the problem of prediction within the setting of species sampling models. We consider d populations composed of different species with unknown proportions. Our goal is to predict specific features of additional and unobserved samples from the d populations by adopting a Bayesian nonparametric model. We focus on a broad class of hierarchical priors. These were introduced and investigated in[1], where also an algorithm for drawing predictions is devised, however, without any specific numerical illustration. The aim of this paper is twofold: on the one hand, we provide an illustration with an actual implementation of the algorithm of[1] and, on the other hand, we discuss its relevance with respect to complex prediction problems with species sampling data.
