The Phoenix Area Office (PXAO), Reclamation, maintains an archaeological site database for the Central Arizona Project (CAP) main stem canal. The data base was developed using all the previous main stem survey data and previously recorded sites. While many sites have been determined eligible or not eligible for the National Register of Historic Places (Register), some have not received eligibility determinations and some are located outside of the construction corridor and not impacted. Additionally, legacy survey and site records have a number of errors and are sometimes contradictory. When work on the Hayden Rhodes section of the CAP was initiated in the 1970s, contract archaeology was still in its infancy, with field methods and recording procedures still developing. Some of the sites along the Hayden Rhodes Aqueduct were recorded as low density artifact scatters encompassing hundreds of acres. Most of these sites have been resurveyed and site boundaries updated in a more discreet manner. Reclamation requested that Archaeological Consulting Services, Ltd. (ACS) relocate the remaining small sites found along the Hayden Rhodes Aqueduct between Phoenix and the Colorado River as part of this final phase of the assessment study. Reclamation identified 16 sites to re-locate and assess the condition of these archaeological sites within the CAP ROW. This is the fourth and final phase of site assessments along the western reach of the CAP. Only the portions of sites found on Reclamation lands (including within the CAP security fence) were relocated, surveyed, and evaluated. All sites were re-surveyed, mapped, and their locational information updated with Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) coordinates through Global Positioning System (GPS). Site existence or destruction was determined, as well as current conditions and how much of each site exists within the ROW. Register eligibility recommendations were made and site number discrepancies resolved with new Arizona State Museum (ASM) site numbers assigned, when necessary. The purpose of this resurvey was to correct historic records, site maps, and locational errors. In general, these legacy records from the 1970s and 1980s were incomplete. AZSITE, ACS’s extensive library of cultural resource management (CRM) reports, and reports available online at the Digital Archaeological Record (tDAR) were examined to consolidate as many of these legacy records as possible into this final report. Arizona State Parks & Trails (ASPT) is considering the procurement of approximately 51.5 ac in the town of Bouse, Arizona. The property is privately owned at this time. If the property is acquired by ASPT, it will be developed into the Arizona Peace Trail State Park. Funding to date has derived from ASPT. Details regarding future funding, permitting, and development are currently unavailable. No archaeological sites were encountered. Four IOs -one feature and three artifacts- were recorded. These include one historic midden (IO-1, one glass shard (IO-3), and two tertiary flakes (IO-2 [basalt] and IO-4 [jasper]). The basalt flake may have functioned as an expedient tool. The jasper flake is likely to have originated at a prehispanic jasper quarry within the nearby Bouse Site (Harner 1958). Although none of the IOs have been definitively dated, the midden and shard are likely to be over 50 years old, and the flakes are most likely prehispanic. The Bureau of Reclamation has developed an archaeological site database for the Central Arizona Project (CAP) canal main stem based on Class III survey data that includes all previously recorded sites. An unknown number of these sites were either destroyed by construction or excavation, while others are no longer located within the CAP right-of-way (ROW). To assist Reclamation in checking the accuracy of its site database, Logan Simpson Design, Inc. was asked to relocate and record 5 sites that had been identified along the Hayden-Rhodes Aqueduct (formerly the Granite Reef Aqueduct) of the CAP system. All 5 sites were relocated between mile markers 44 and 73 within La Paz County. The combined site areas within the CAP ROW total 1,330 acres. Logan Simpson has consolidated AZ S:7:13(ASU), AZ S:7:2(ASM), AZ S:7:3(ASM), and AZ S:7:4(ASM) into a single site, designated AZ S:7:87(ASM). AZ S:7:87(ASM) was previously recommended eligible for inclusion in the NRHP. Logan Simpson recommends that Feature 1 and Loci B, C, and D contribute to the site's eligibility; however, the remainder of the site within the ROW, including the previously excavated Locus A, does not contribute to the site’s overall eligibility. AZ S:5:50(ASM) was previously recommended eligible for inclusion in the NRHP, but the portion within the CAP ROW is non-contributing to the site’s overall eligibility. more...

In April and May 2000, SWCA, Inc., Environmental Consultants (SWCA) conducted cultural resource surveys for EPNG's Line No. 2000 Project, surveying the former All American Pipeline in Cochise, La Paz, Maricopa, Pima, and Pinal counties for the Arizona segment. At the request of EPNG, SWCA began the cultural resources survey for this project in April 2000 in support of an Environmental Assessment (EA) being prepared by ENSR, Inc., in conjunction with a pipeline acquisition, conversion, operation filing with the FERC. This report describes the cultural resources studies completed in the Arizona segment of the proposed right-of-way (ROW) of the Line No. 2000 Project. SWCA surveyed the original 100-foot-wide All American Pipeline construction ROW and will survey 100-foot-wide rights-of-way centered on proposed crossover pipelines. From September 13 to December 13, 1976, an archeological crew from the Museum of Northern Arizona surveyed the Arizona portions of two alternate corridors proposed for a 500 kV transmission line by Southern California Edison Company. The two routes are located in southern Arizona stretching from the Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station west of Buckeye to the Colorado River near Ehrenberg. The purpose of this survey was to locate all archeological sites along the two corridors and to assess the probable impact of the transmission line upon the sites. The two routes cover approximately 190 miles. Recommendations are made for the preservation or mitigation of adverse effects on each site in the event of construction of the transmission line. Seventy-three sites were recorded. Thirty one of the recorded sites are located on the first route which passes through points B-C-GG (see attached map). Forty-two sites are located on the second route which passes through points C-AA-E. Most of the sites tend to be clustered near major drainages. Although the surveyed corridors contain frequent instances of cultural material, the majority of sites appear to be limited both in size and in terms of the duration of occupation. This observation is based on the extent, variety, and abundance of artifactual material at each site. Most sites probably represent loci of specialized or brief activities. Only seven sites fall into the category of multiple activity sites. For this reason, few of the seventy-three sites are recommended for excavation as a means to mitigate impact of the installation of the proposed transmission line. The majority of sites are believed to consist of surface material only, in which case, avoidance or sample collections are usually recommended as appropriate salvage procedure. more...
