Abstract

Antarctic notothenioid fishes show wide adaptive morphological radiation, linked to habitat preferences and food composition. However, direct comparisons of phenotypic variability and feeding habits are still lacking, particularly in stages inhabiting nearshore areas. To assess these relationships, we collected juveniles and adults of the most common benthic species inhabiting shallow waters off the South Shetland Islands within a similar size range, the plunderfish Harpagifer antarcticus, the black rockcod Notothenia coriiceps, and the marbled rockcod Notothenia rossii. Individual size ranges varied from 44.0 to 98.9 mm standard length (LS) (H. antarcticus), from 95.8 to 109.3 mm LS (N. coriiceps), and from 63.0 to 113.0 mm LS (N. rossii). Notothenioid fish showed different morphospace variability, being larger for H. antarcticus than the other Notothenia species and associated with the position of the posterior end of the operculum, along with the location and relative size of the eye. The evolutionary allometry was low, but the static allometry was much higher, especially for H. antarcticus and N. rossii. The diet was mainly carnivorous, consisting of amphipods and euphausiids. Macroalgae were scarce or totally absent in the gut contents of all species. Only H. antarcticus showed an increase in the prey number and ingested prey volume with fish size. Finally, there was a significant covariation between shape changes and LS in all species (allometric effects), however, not with prey composition, probably due to the small size range or ontogenetic stage and the relative similarity (or lack of contrast) in the benthic environment that they utilized. Abstract

Despite the general belief that the Southern Ocean harbors low fish biodiversity, the Weddell Sea hosts one of the richest fish communities in the region. Parallelly, the Weddell Sea is also known for the presence of dense and diverse macrobenthos. Most macrobenthic invertebrates, such as gorgonians, sponges and bryozoans, are considered ecosystem engineers as they generate a three-dimensional structure that increases habitat heterogeneity. This structural complexity serves as a refuge against predators as well as a nursery ground for many organisms, including fish species. By analyzing video transects recorded by a Remotely Operated Vehicle, we investigated density, spatial distribution and size-frequency of populations of the demersal fish species inhabiting macrobenthic communities in the southernmost part of the Weddell Sea. We also attempted to unveil whether there is any relationship between benthic and fish communities and substrate, as well as some fish behavioral patterns. The dominance of juveniles in the surveyed fish assemblages provides evidence that, at this life stage, some fish species appear to be positively associated with complex benthic communities conformed by bryozoans, sponges and gorgonians which are more common in sand matrix with sparse rocks substrates. Moreover, about 37% of all specimens recorded were resting on benthic invertebrates or were using them to hide, implying that Antarctic benthic communities might offer suitable habitat. As such, it can be concluded that there was an apparent relationship between certain species of fish and the different benthic communities, yet the exact triggers and/or factors behind such an association remain partially elusive

The study area covers a depth range from 251 to 361 m and it is located in front of the Filchner Ronne Ice Shelf, in the southernmost part of the Weddell Sea. We observed the dominance of juveniles in the surveyed fish assemblage provides evidence that, at this life stage, some fish species appear to be positively associated with benthic communities. Moreover, about 37% of all specimens recorded were resting on benthic invertebrates or they were using them to hide, implying that Antarctic benthic communities might offer a suitable shelter from predators. Abstract

The Planning Group on Commercial Catch, Discards and Biological Sampling (PGCCDBS) meeting in February 2012, identified anchovy and sardine as the species requiring confirmation of the micro increments daily growth interpretation and counting carried out by Fisheries Institutes. The planning group indicated that a workshop on anchovy and sardine should be organized in 2013. Before the foreseen workshop on daily age reading (see below), it has been considered useful to plan an exchange programme of anchovy and sardines otolith images in order to ascertain the current level of precision among Institutes and the difficulties that the daily age reading of anchovy and sardine otoliths present. To that purpose, an exchange programme of anchovy and sardine otoliths has been organized between June and September 2013 before the workshop on anchovy and sardine daily age determination (ICES WKMIAS) that will be held in Mazara del Vallo (Italy) on 21-25 October 2013.
