Researchers found that the software facilitates speed in library work, helps to save time with quality service, it is more suitable for library cooperation , collection development, resource sharing and networking etc.

Migration from legacy library automation systems to Koha is a challenging task and requires good homework and teamwork. The migration process and management of Open Source library management system offer a good learning experience for library professionals. The article goes through the challenges and learning opportunities offered by the migration process to Koha by utilizing the expertise of in-house library staff at Mahatma Gandhi University Library.

Data migration is a process of transferring data from existing system to another system and it is divided into two processes: (a) extracting data from an existing system into an extracted file and (b) loading data from extracted file into the new system. Before data migration procedure first you check the database structure and tables of the koha software. After checking the data format, collect data from the libsys software. It includes bibliographical details of the documents, items details, transaction records and patron details. Then using MarcEdit software collected data has been formatted as per the koha software data base structure. Using koha’s data import facility data are uploaded to koha database. Last and most important step is the checking data consistency. This step completes the data migration procedure and certified the koha to be run independently. In this paper we tried to explain the step by step method of bibliographic data migration from libsys to koha, checking data consistency and the problems faced during data migration

Modernisation of Kerala Public Libraries is a massive project of Kerala State Library Council. The project aims to connect all public libraries of Kerala into a single network. It also includes training on modern library management to village librarians. Koha facilitates the platform to connect with the entire public library system. The project is a challenging task and at the same time it opens up a big opportunity for libraries to regain its glory in the networked Kerala society.

Crowd sourcing is a convenient option to raise fund for Open Source Software development. Koha SMS Send driver for eSMS Kerala service developed and made available as Free Software with the financial support of State Central Library, Kerala. Mahatma Gandhi University Library could start SMS notifications from Koha with the help of eSMS Send driver. Small contributions from users can make big changes in the entire software community.

The present study compares the circulation module of selected open-source library management software and its attributes. The circulation module of all open source integrated library management software have basic functions and features used in workflow in the libraries. Through circulation module, we can easily get the resources. Circulation module’s attributes are check in-check out, renewal, reservations, transfer, alerting system, alerting system, overdue reminder, use barcode and RFID technology, weeding-out process and so on. The purpose of the present study is to draw a comparison of circulation module of ABCD, Koha, NewGenLib and OpenBiblio.

With the invention of Information Communication Technology, libraries now use various types of technologies to provide services to users. In this changing environment needs of library users are changed. In order to play a useful role in supporting teaching, learning and research, librarians need to develop special knowledge and skills for information services in the digital era. This study examines, on the basis of published literature, the skills required by librarians in the digital era.

A PAST FOR THE FUTURE: THIRTY YEARS OF SBN, the Italian Library Network. This article is the text of a talk given by the author at a conference on the thirtieth anniversary of the Italian Library Network, SBN (Servizio Bibliotecario Nazionale). With more than six thousand libraries of different types, and tens of thousands of users who search daily its online catalog of 15 million titles, SBN represents today a great achievement for the Italian library community. Strategies and critical issues of the various stages of the program development are stressed, as well the new challenges emerging from the technological and social changes of the last decade. Finally, future prospectives are outlined and discussed, taking into account the strong points of SBN and the library’s changing role in the new communication environment.

Prospects for the use free and open source library system in Ukraine.

Emergence of open source technologies have revolutionized the way in which libraries function. Proprietary software requires licence which demands cost and reduces the freedom in its use and customization. The present study intend to determine the perceptions of proprietary Integrated Library System (ILS) users on adopting Open Source ILS (OSILS). The study identified the major issues which forestall wider adoption of OSILS and puts forward some recommendations to enhance the rate of adoption of OSILS by proprietary software users in India. Online survey method was adopted to gather primary data and the coverage was limited South India. The study found that though majority of the proprietary software users recommend and support the adoption of OSILS, but lack of technical knowledge for installing and maintaining the software discourages the matter. The study opines that the rate of adoption of OSILS can be enhanced by providing extensive training to the professionals, making available expertise and documentation as well as adopting simple installation procedures in the package.

Open Source Integrated Library Systems (OSILS) are gaining widespread adoption in Indian libraries during the last two decades. The study intended to assess the development and rate of adoption of OSILS and identify the major factors that influenced the adoption of OSILS in Indian libraries. The study also measures the activities performed by the OSILS users to sustain it and propose possible solutions to the problems if any they faced which contributed to the popularity of OSILS in Indian libraries. A survey with structured questionnaire was used to collect primary data from users of OSILS across the country through Google doc. Study was limited to libraries in India using OSILS. It was found that, in spite of a drastic enhancement in the rate of adoption of OSILS in Indian libraries, lack of technical support and shortage of skilled manpower to execute installation, maintenance and customization stands as hindrance to its extensive use.

The paper comparatively evaluates open source library management software Koha (3.14) and proprietary library automation software LibSys4 for understanding the strengths and weaknesses of the two packages. Circulation module is evaluated in detail. The study is based on the day to day experiences gathered from using the two software in St Xavier’s College Central Library. Study found that Koha software has an extremely user-friendly interface and is cost effective which is challenge to the traditional LMS software like LibSys.

The demand for digital information received by the Reference and Bibliographic Information Service is described through the Google Drive tool, implemented on the Library page on the Law School website. A percentage reading of the statistical data collected in a period of nine months is carried out and the results are presented by means of graphs.

This paper entitled "Survey Document Supply Service (SOD) by 2014 Bibliosalut evaluation system GTBib-SOD" explains the experience of using the evaluation system GTBib-SOD provides for a survey of automated users . To do this, the need for this study in the Virtual Library of Health Sciences of the Balearic Islands, who participated in the project, which were the targets and where regulation is based is justified. The study continues to show in detail the details of the work, focusing on the technology used, the advantages of using an automated system to manage the survey and proposals for improvement. All this in parallel with the presentation of the results from the survey in terms of Virtual Library.

The proliferation of open source software specialized in library and information science has solved many problems of automation of information units (libraries, archives, documentation centers) and created other ones, as the correct configuration, installation and operation thereof. The purpose of creating a software distribution document is to provide users an ecosystem of applications that potentially could be used immediately to manage files, web repositories, workflows, conferences, journals, publishers, web-crawler programs, systems ILS integrated library management systems CMS content management and content aggregators. For its development we have used a web distribution of portable type AMP server on which are installed various programs and applications that enable the combined information professionals focus any need for automated document management.

ΕSTIA constitutes one of the first open access repositories developed in Greece through the 2nd CSF, where initially graduate/postgraduate theses and PhD’s have been archived by Library's staff. The present study describes the development of the whole procedure to a self archiving model and its transition into an inter-departmental collaborative framework. This new model allows the end-user to deposit his work at the reposirtory. All theses are being checked by the LIC’s staff and consequently are published on the repository. Ιnitial results of the evaluation process are briefly presented. All the above are included in the project for upgrading LIC services named “Advanced Digital Repository and Electronic Library Services for Harokopio University” co funded by the European Operational Program “Digital Convergence”.

The tremendous increase in usage of data over the past few years and the ease of availability of things across the globe any time lead to the Advancement of multilingual database. Storage, retrieval and archiving of data for multi lingual system has been a challenge. Our research project “Semantic Matching using Ontology in Multilingual Environment” is an extension is to look into addressing multi-lingual data. The report focuses on providing design and implementation of multilingual system. These comprise of two main components being (i) Cross Lingual Information Retrieval, and (ii) Indian Language to Indian Language Machine Translation. Consider the context of large scale natural language processing applications in the areas of Cross Lingual IR and Machine Translation, wherein such a model for multilingual dictionary is established. When contrasted to traditional single lingual or bilingual dictionary, the model uses the core concept of Synonym Groupings (synsets) that is used as a way to connect different languages in a crisp and efficient manner.

SOUL or any Library Management Software will work efficiently only if parameters (rules) for each operation are set before the start using in-house working. These parameters are stored in the set-up pages and can be accessed through the various modules as per the requirements of concern libraries. In this paper researcher studied which reports can be generated in SOUL 2.0 software. Administration (14 reports), Acquisition(12reports), Catalogue(20reports), Circulation(31reports), Serial Control(15reports), OPAC and WEB OPAC (13reports) all these modules are provides various daily working reports for the library information. It is very useful to development of any types of library.

Starting from the experience of the Puntobiblio network who build a union catalog of libraries of different types: public/popular, school, special, and others, the argentinean Comisión Nacional Protectora de Bibliotecas Populares (Conabip), asked Veronica Lencinas, the technical manager of the project and the IT specialist Pablo Bianchi to present a project to implement a new integrated library system since the old Sigebi system had become obsolet. Once approved the new system, now called Digibepe -Koha pre-configured to the needs of popular libraries- was implemented and part of the work was the migration and reformat of library data that was not in the Marc 21 format. The migración not only includes Sigebi-records but also those from Aguapey, Winisis, Trooya, Pergamo, Catalis, OpenMarcoPolo, and other systems based ​​mostly on MS Excel, Clipper, FoxPro and MS Access. This contribution describes strategies and techniques used in various data migrations to the Marc21 format as implemented Digibepé system (Koha).

Evergreen, a modern open source integrated library system , is licensed under GNU GPL license. Evergreen was created in the USA in 2006 . Currently, it is used in about 800 public and professional libraries and consortiums all over the world. The Czech localization started in 2008. Since autumn of 2011 , Evergreen is being operated in the Jabok Library for all standard library processes (circulation and OPAC, cataloging, acquisition). Evergreen offers additional services as well (e.g.. booking module, surveys, credit card payment, offline interface, Kids OPAC, etc.) User experience gained during almost two years comprises also some minor problems caused by shortcomings of the Czech localization (which have gradually been eliminated) and from lack of experience with this software in the Czech Republic.But in general it confirms that implementation of Evergreen in the Jabok Library was a good choice It shows a great potential of Evergreen for the Jabok Library as well as for other libraries. At the beginning of this year the Czech Evergreen Dokuwiki Portal was put into operation by the Czech Evergreen community.

The objective of the research is to evaluate algorithms for automatic classification of content, originally designed for thematic categorization of content and news compiled with RESYNC platform. The evaluation process is conducted with forms specifically designed to determine the degree of relevance of content classified by the evaluators. Finally, it shows that the algorithm evaluated, has an accuracy of 71%. It was also determined that the highest ranked topics are those related to finance, law and politics.

The course "Digital repositories: dissemination of digital heritage in libraries, archives and museums" (Version 4.0, February 2013) tries to analyze and to disclose aspects of the design and implementation of digital repositories, especially the matters related to dissemination of the collections. Slide presentations were done, and digital repositories created by Spanish libraries, archives and museums were evaluated.

This paper highlights the various sources of electronic resource and the medium for its access such as Web OPAC, web portals, blogs, online databases etc. It also discusses about the impact of use electronic resources among the users in general and the problems faced by them.

Recursos tecnológicos têm sido admitidos e necessários no desenvolvimento das mais variadas atividades profissionais, sociais, culturais e políticas. Com a Catalogação não seria diferente. Esta pesquisa apresenta, no bojo da Ciência da Informação, o estudo do relacionamento entre as áreas de Ciência da Informação e Linguística por meio da correlação entre a catalogação e os recursos tecnológicos e delimita-se pelo entendimento de que a simbiose entre eles se faz necessária ao estabelecimento dos processos de produção, armazenamento, acesso, uso e reuso de tais registros bibliográficos. Na área de Ciência da Informação o emprego de tecnologias de informação e comunicação se tornou constante tanto no gerenciamento de estoques informacionais quanto na oferta diferenciada de produtos e serviços. O objetivo definido para esta pesquisa volta-se para traçar a associação entre a Ciência da Informação e a Linguística no que concerne o estudo dos registros bibliográficos em ambientes informacionais digitais. Para o arcabouço teórico-metodológico recorre-se a pesquisadores que contribuíram para a Linguística e para a Ciência da Informação, dentre eles, Hjelmslev, Saracevic, Saussure, Shannon e Smiraglia. Dentre os resultados discute-se a necessidade de se recorrer a padrões de conteúdo e a padrões de estrutura de metadados descritivos na produção de registros bibliográficos em se tratando de interpretação de dados em meios automatizados. Como considerações finais estabelece-se que a simbiose entre catalogação e recursos tecnológicos ocorre nos níveis semânticos dos registros bibliográficos, o que torna viável a mudança do paradigma comportamental dos catálogos automatizados por conta da utilização de padrões de estrutura de metadados descritivos e, consequentemente, pela inferência semântica, prevista em uma aplicação computacional.

Acquisition System is a main subsystem of Library automation. It is the constant need to search for status and related data concerning ordered material by library staff and users. In other words library staff requires searching the files of the acquisition system to retrieve information and it necessary take follow up action. In S. B. College library started the automation from Acquisition Module with the help of SOUL 2.0. It is very user friendly library software.
