Abstract

Data is increasingly being collected from multiple sources and described by multiple views. These multi-view data provide richer information than traditional single-view data. Fusing the former for specific tasks is an essential component of multi-view clustering. Since the goal of multi-view clustering algorithms is to discover the common latent structure shared by multiple views, the majority of proposed solutions overlook the advantages of incorporating knowledge derived from horizontal collaboration between multi-view data and the final consensus. To fill this gap, we propose the Joint Multi-View Collaborative Clustering (JMVCC) solution, which involves the generation of basic partitions using Non-negative Matrix Factorization (NMF) and the horizontal collaboration principle, followed by the fusion of these local partitions using ensemble clustering. Furthermore, we propose a weighting method to reduce the risk of negative collaboration (i.e., views with low quality) during the generation and fusion of local partitions. Abstract

Abstract Structures in the Universe, ranging from globular clusters to entire galaxies, are not described by standard statistical mechanics at equilibrium. Instead, they are formed through a process of a very different nature, called violent relaxation that is now known to be possible also in other systems that exhibit long-range interactions. This mechanism was proposed theoretically and modelled numerically, but never directly observed in any physical system. Here, we develop a table-top experiment allowing us to directly observe violent relaxation in an optical setting. The resulting optical dynamics can also be likened to the formation of an analogue 2D-galaxy through the analogy of the underlying equations, where we can control a range of parameters, including the nonlocal interacting potential, allowing us to emulate the physics of gravitational quantum and classical dark matter models.

Abstract

Abstract Background Literature suggests colonic resection and primary anastomosis (RPA) instead of Hartmann’s procedure (HP) for the treatment of left-sided colonic emergencies. We aim to evaluate the surgical options globally used to treat patients with acute left-sided colonic emergencies and the factors that leading to the choice of treatment, comparing HP and RPA. Methods This is a prospective, international, multicenter, observational study registered on ClinicalTrials.gov. A total 1215 patients with left-sided colonic emergencies who required surgery were included from 204 centers during the period of March 1, 2020, to May 31, 2020. with a 1-year follow-up. Results 564 patients (43.1%) were females. The mean age was 65.9 ± 15.6 years. HP was performed in 697 (57.3%) patients and RPA in 384 (31.6%) cases. Complicated acute diverticulitis was the most common cause of left-sided colonic emergencies (40.2%), followed by colorectal malignancy (36.6%). Abstract

The nonlinear Schr\"odinger and the Schr\"odinger-Newton equations model many phenomena in various fields. Here, we perform an extensive numerical comparison between splitting methods (often employed to numerically solve these equations) and the integrating factor technique, also called Lawson method. Indeed, the latter is known to perform very well for the nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation, but has not been thoroughly investigated for the Schr\"odinger-Newton equation. Comparisons are made in one and two spatial dimensions, exploring different boundary conditions and parameters values. We show that for the short range potential of the nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation, the integrating factor technique performs better than splitting algorithms, while, for the long range potential of the Schr\"odinger-Newton equation, it depends on the particular system considered.

Abstract

Large scale structures in the Universe, ranging from globular clusters to entire galaxies, are the manifestation of relaxation to out-of-equilibrium states that are not described by standard statistical mechanics at equilibrium. Instead, they are formed through a process of a very different nature, i.e. violent relaxation. However, astrophysical time-scales are so large that it is not possible to directly observe these relaxation dynamics and therefore verify the details of the violent relaxation process. We develop a table-top experiment and model that allows us to directly observe effects such as mixing of phase space, and violent relaxation, leading to the formation of a table-top analogue of a galaxy. The experiment allows us to control a range of parameters, including the nonlocal (gravitational) interaction strength and quantum effects, thus providing an effective test-bed for gravitational models that cannot otherwise be directly studied in experimental settings., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures; Supplementary Information 9 pages and 7 figures

8. Optimized integrating factor technique for Schr\'odinger-like equations

Abstract

The integrating factor technique is widely used to solve numerically (in particular) the Schr\"odinger equation in the context of spectral methods. Here, we present an improvement of this method exploiting the freedom provided by the gauge condition of the potential. Optimal gauge conditions are derived considering the equation and the temporal numerical resolution with an adaptive embedded scheme of arbitrary order. We illustrate this approach with the nonlinear Schr\"odinger (NLS) and with the Schr\"odinger-Newton (SN) equations. We show that this optimization increases significantly the overall computational speed, sometimes by a factor five or more. This gain is crucial for long time simulations.

Abstract

Photobiomodulation (PBM) has demonstrated positive effects on the muscle repair process. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effects of infrared PBM using different light sources—low-level laser (LLL) at 780 nm (40 or 70 mW, 10 J/cm2, 0.4 J) or LED at 850 nm (40 or 70 mW, 0.13 J/cm2, 0.4 J)—and dosimetric parameters on the proliferation and migration of muscle cells. The results showed that LLL 40 mW and 70 mW, with the same radiation exposure, led to an increase in proliferation after 24 h, but no differences at 48 and 72 h. Cells irradiated with LED 70 mW exhibited an increase in proliferation in comparison to the control group and 40mW after 24 and 48 h, but not at 72 h. Moreover, cell migration was greater in comparison to the control after 6 and 24 h, and no differences were found at 12 h when LLL was used with an output power of 70 mW. Furthermore, no differences were found at 6 and 12 h with the 70 mW output power-LED, but an increase was observed in the cell migration after 24 h. In conclusion, PBM using different light sources and dosimetric parameters was able to modulate the proliferation of C2C12 myoblasts, but only PBM at 70 mW was able to modulate the migration of these cells.

13. A Fe Model for TRM Reinforced Masonry Walls with Interface Effects

Abstract

We report on experimental and numerical investigations of textile reinforced mortar (TRM) strengthening systems, an innovative solution for reinforcing historical masonry structures. The experimental campaign presented in this paper is original and concerns two commercial TRM applications to single-leaf clay masonry panels. The proposed FE modelling is based on a multiscale approach with the possibility of simulating bed joints sliding and TRM-reinforcement debonding. This last phenomenon is frequently reported in the experimental literature and it has been observed also in our experimental tests. The numerical model is applied to study the behaviour of TRM reinforced masonry panels under diagonal compression tests.

Abstract

Authors report 6 cases of benign recurrent intrahepatic cholestasis (BRIC), a rare disease of unknown etiology first described 30 years ago by Summerskill and Walshe, and thought to represent a study model for human cholestasis. Clinical, biochemical and pathologic findings of BRIC are briefly summarized in this paper in order to emphasize some triggering factors of the cholestatic attack (e.g., flu-like episodes and pregnancy), the diagnostic problems and the importance to avoid a surgical procedure. Finally, the ‘state of the art’ of the pathogenesis of BRIC is briefly summarized.

This report presents the case of a 78-year-old man affected by retroperitoneal tumor arising from the lower segment of the inferior vena cava. The patient underwent excision of the tumor and resection of the vena cava. Postoperative histopathologic examination revealed the diagnosis of leiomyosarcoma of the inferior vena cava, a rare tumor of mesenchymal origin.

17. Incidental Carcinoma in Multinodular Goiter: Risk Factors

Abstract

The aim of the study was to analyze the frequency of incidental thyroid carcinoma (unknown tumor smaller than or equal to 10 mm) in a consecutive series of 462 total thyroidectomies for multinodular goiter and to investigate the clinical risk factors for this type of malignancy. A retrospective, single-center study of outcome data collected from patients with preoperative diagnosis of multinodular goiter who underwent total thyroidectomy at the General Surgery Unit of Pavia (Italy) between January 2000 and December 2008 was performed. Possible risk factors for malignancy were: gender, age, time of evolution of goiter, presence of a dominant nodule in multinodular goiter, hyperthyroidism, history of radiation to the neck, residence in an area of endemic goiter, prior thyroid surgery, calcifications in the goiter detected by neck ultrasound or chest X-rays, and a family history of thyroid diseases. In a 9-year period, 462 patients underwent total thyroidectomy. We found 41 cases of incidental thyroid carcinoma; the most common histopathological type was papillary. The multivariable analysis demonstrated that the clinical variables associated with occult carcinoma were a personal history of radiation therapy to the neck, the presence of calcifications detected by ultrasound or neck X-rays, and a family history of thyroid diseases; residence in an area of endemic goiter was a protective factor. A personal history of radiation to the neck, detection of calcifications by ultrasound or by neck X-rays, and a family history of thyroid diseases should be considered clinical risk factors for malignancy in multinodular goiter.

Abstract

Over the last few years, a great deal of effort has been devoted to solving the problem of power and particle handling in divertors, which has been recognized as a critical issue for the operation of a magnetic fusion reactor. In particular, the choice of materials for plasma facing components has been examined with a view to developing heat and erosion resistant materials for divertor target plates. A large database on the behaviour of low-Z (carbon or beryllium) materials in tokamaks is available, while for high-Z materials there is little experience in the present generation of magnetic fusion devices. Frascati Tokamak Upgrade (FTU), a high field compact tokamak, has devoted part of its experimental campaign to studying the plasma characteristics when its limiter material is changed from the usual Inconel (nickel) to molybdenum and tungsten. Siliconization of the machine has also allowed the comparison of plasma performance when a relatively low-Z (silicon) ion is the dominant impurity. In this article, results are reported concerning the plasma operation, the differences in plasma characteristics and radiation losses, the impurity generation mechanisms and the relative impurity concentrations in the core plasma. A simulation of the experimental results, made with a self-consistent edge-core coupled model is presented, in order to provide evidence of the main physics mechanisms responsible for the observed behaviour

Abstract

Plasma behaviour in the high density regime has been investigated on the Frascati Tokamak Upgrade (FTU). The items particularly addressed are density limit, MARFE characteristics and fuelling efficiency. With gas puffing, a maximum line average density of 3.2*1020 m-3 has been obtained in the ohmic regime at q=5.1, corresponding to 1.7 times the Greenwald limit; while with pellet injection, a value of 3.7*1020 m-3 has been reached at q=3.5. The density limit appears to be connected with the impurity content and edge parameters, so the best results are obtained with very clean plasmas and peaked electron density profiles. The MARFE phenomenon always appears beyond a critical density that depends on the total input power and the effective charge: emissivities in the range of 2 to 12 MW/m3 have been measured in this highly radiating region. The fuelling efficiency, starting from a value of about 50% at low density, progressively deteriorates, falling to 10% near the density limit: this behaviour is interpreted as being due to a decrease of the scrape-off layer transparency to incoming neutrals

Three methods of density modulation have been used in FTU discharges (gas puffing, pellet injection and current rampup). The analysis of particle balance confirms that the neoclassical theory is not adequate and the experimental results obtained by the three methods are used to verify the validity of an empirical expression for the radial particle flux. Such an expression is relevant for the design of future experiments and constitutes a constraint for any satisfactory theory

Abstract

Anti-chondroitin unsulfated proteoglycan (COS-PG) 1B5 monoclonal antibody (MAb) andVicia villosa agglutinin (VVA) recognize the same neuronal subset. Moreover, when in double immunofluorescence study the sections were digested with chondroitinase ABC (ChABC), a procedure necessary to create the epitope of 1B5 MAb, and incubated with VVA, no VVA positive neurons were detected. This finding suggests that VVA binds terminalN-acetyl-galactosamine present in the glycidic chains of COS-PG or of glycoproteins that form perineuronal molecular aggregates with COS-PG.

24. Left Pneumothorax Secondary to Colonoscopic Perforation of the Sigmoid Colon A Case Report

Abstract

We present here the case of a 75-year-old woman who complained of acute abdominal pain after a diagnostic colonoscopy. Abdominal x-rays demonstrated pneumoperitoneum, whereas chest x-rays showed pneumomediastinum and left pneumothorax. A chest drain was placed and subsequently an exploratory laparoscopy was performed, during which air was found in the subserosa of the sigmoid colon and in the mesosigmoid secondary to perforation of a sigmoid diverticulum. The perforation was repaired and a protective loop colostomy was fashioned. The patient was discharged 8 days postoperatively in a good general condition. Although numerous cases of pneumoretroperitoneum and pneumomediastinum secondary to iatrogenic perforation of the colon have been described, reports of pneumothorax are much rarer. We, therefore, discuss the anatomic bases and the possible physiopathologic mechanisms responsible for this clinical complication.

25. Thoracic-Abdominal Approach in Primary Pulmonary Synovial Sarcoma

Abstract

We report a case of primary synovial sarcoma of the lung. The patient was a 32-year-old male who presented with a mass in the right hemithorax invading the peritoneal cavity. The neoplasm was resected through a thoracic-abdominal approach. The patient is doing well 21 months after surgery. Within the last decade thoracic localizations of synovial sarcoma are an emerging histopathological entity thanks to the molecular analysis of the SYT-SSX fusion gene transcript.

31. Forward Scattering of Light from a Laboratory Plasma

Abstract

THE scattering of electromagnetic radiation by a plasma in thermal equilibrium has been investigated by several authors1–3following the remarkable result of Bowles4, who found that the spectrum of the radiation back-scattered from the ionosphere has a breadth comparable to the Doppler shift at the thermal velocity even though the electrons do the scattering. Rosenbluth and Rostoker5have extended those calculations to certain non-equilibrium cases. These calculations all show that the form and breadth of the spectrum of the scattered radiation are determined principally by the parameter denned as follows: where λ is the wave-length of the incident radiation, λDthe Debye length of the plasma and θ the scattering angle measured with respect to the forward direction. If α ≪ 1 the electrons scatter as independent particles and the resulting spectrum is gaussian with a half-breadth given by the Doppler shift corresponding to the electron thermal velocity. If α > 1 the spectrum is dominated by collective effects and consists of a central peak broadened at the Doppler shift corresponding to the ion thermal velocity which, however, is gaussian in shape only for large frequency shifts and has two weak maxima at the half-breadth positions and two electron satellites at ± ωp, the electron plasma frequency. These electron satellites each contain only 1/α2of the total scattered energy.

Abstract

Benign recurrent intrahepatic cholestasis (BRIC) is a form of cholestasis of obscure aetiology characterized by recurrent episodes of jaundice and itching associated with a morphological picture of pure intrahepatic cholestasis. No effective treatment has yet been found among the many that have been proposed and the invariably benign nature of the condition has been questioned. A case of BRIC followed for a period of 20 years is described. This case is of great interest from these two points of view: 1) the histologic and electron microscopic findings 23 and 41 years after the first episode of cholestasis, respectively, failed to reveal evidence of the possible future development of cirrhosis; 2) treatment with ursodeoxycholic acid proved ineffective both therapeutically and in the prevention of episodes of bile stasis: on the contrary, calculosis of the common bile duct appeared after 8 months from the onset of the treatment.

Abstract

Within the "primary" cholestasis we can discriminate "essential" forms due to an endogenous biochemical error of bile acid metabolism and/or secretion and "conditioned" forms, in which a known precipitating factor is required to elicit the functional disorder responsible for cholestasis. Among the essential forms of cholestasis must be included benign recurrent intrahepatic cholestasis or Summerskill-Walshe disease, Aagenaes disease, progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis or Byler's disease, and forms due to disorders of the peroxisomes. Benign recurrent intrahepatic cholestasis, the best known form, is characterized by recurrent episodes of itching and jaundice with an acute onset separated by symptom-free intervals, which shows no tendency to progress to liver failure. The conditioned cholestasis group comprises cholestasis of pregnancy and drug-induced cholestasis. Benign recurrent cholestasis of pregnancy is a form induced "by" pregnancy and not a form occurring "in" pregnancy, such as cholestasis due to hepatitis, to primary biliary cirrhosis, to cholelithiasis. Drug-induced cholestasis is a chapter of great clinical relevance: forms due to steroid hormones and due to phenothiazines are discussed.

Abstract

Intrahepatic cholestasis occurs in certain conditions characterized by a biochemical error of bile acid metabolism, resulting from a disorder of the hepatic canalicular system responsible for synthesis or secretion of the bile acids. As regards the pathogenesis of these "primary" forms of cholestasis, it must be remembered that cholestasis represents the outcome of various factors capable of interfering with the mechanism of bile flow. Therefore the factors known to be involved in cholestasis, such as the metabolic steps in bile acid metabolism, the cytoplasmic membrane, the mitochondria, the cytoskeleton of the liver cell, the intercellular junctions, the physicochemical state of the canalicular bile, are discussed briefly. The diagnostic and clinical aspects of cholestasis with reference to the clinical symptoms, laboratory findings and to role of liver biopsy are synthesized, and the essential criteria for a methodological approach to cholestasis are proposed.

Abstract

Peroxisomes or microbodies are peculiar subcellular organelles with an important role in the metabolism of a variety of different organic compounds. Particularly they are an important site of bile acids synthesis. Some hepatic diseases, mainly cholestatic, can to be reconnected at disorders of bile acids synthesis by these organelles. From the biochemical point some diseases present alterations of the cholesterol side chain (Zellweger syndrome, pseudo-Zellweger syndrome, infantile Refsum's disease, neonatal adrenoleukodystrophy), other diseases present errors involving the steroid nucleus (familial giant cell hepatitis). Zellweger disease or cerebro-hepato-renal syndrome is characterized clinically by skeletal changes, muscle hypotonia, renal cysts, psychosomatic retardation and persistent cholestasis and from the ultrastructural standpoint by the virtual absence of liver cell peroxisomes. Pseudo-Zellweger disease shows many of the clinical features of Zellweger disease but differs from this condition on account of the presence of abundant peroxisomes in the liver cells. Infantile Refsum's disease and neonatal adrenoleukodystrophy show typical clinical disorders and liver damage leading to cirrhosis. "Familial giant cell hepatitis" is characterized by jaundice from the first days of life, hepatosplenomegaly, cholestasis, lack of physical malformations. The disorder is due to defective biosynthesis of the bile acids with formation of allo-bile acids.

Abstract

Temporal arteritis (also known as Horton's or giant cell arteritis) is a panarteritis of the large and medium-calibre cranial vessels. An account is given of its epidemiological, clinical and anatomopathological aspects and its involvement of the locomotor apparatus (Horton's rheumatism). Reference is also made to the close relationship between temporal arteritis and pulseless disease. Some workers are of the opinion that they share the same aetiology, and that their clinical expression in different areas is dictated by age and constitutional factors.

Abstract

Angioimmunoblastic lymphadenopathy with dysproteinemia. Angioimmunoblastic lymphadenopathy with dysproteinemia is a lymphomatous-like disease associated with typical anatomopathological features of the lymph nodes and severe dysproteinemia. The clinical course is variable. Acquired immunodeficiency, oral infections, neoplastic development are frequently present. The evolution of the disease is also variable; spontaneous resolution as well as lethal complications are possible. No specific therapy is available. There are conflicting opinions about the nosographic statement of angioimmunoblastic lymphadenopathy among benign lymphadenopathy and lymphomas.

Abstract

There is much evidence to suggest that temporal arteritis and rhizomelic polymyalgia are both immunological diseases. The classic results of experimental pathology are discussed, together with the relations between rhizomelic polymyalgia and both virus hepatitis B and the HLA system. From the clinical standpoint, it is now agreed that differences in individual response may lead to either a synovial or an arteritic response in both forms. Their association in what Hamrin has called "polymyalgia arteritica" is also common.

Abstract

Behçet disease is characterised by a triple symptom picture (genital and oral aphthae, ocular lesions) named after the Turkish dermatologist, Hulusi Behçet. It is found all over the world, but is particularly frequent in Japan and the Mediterranean basin. Adult males are primarily affected. The classic symptomatological triad may be accompanied by other manifestations involving the skin (hypersensitivity to microtrauma is a peculiar feature), joints, nervous system, gastroenteric system, cardiovascular system (phlebitis, phlebothrombosis), lungs and kidneys. There is a chronic course marked by periods of exacerbation and remission, which may last for years. Diagnosis is clinical only, since neither the laboratory data nor the histopathological signs of vasculitis are truly pathognomonic. The prognosis quoad valetudinem is uncertain with regard to the eye lesions, which may result in blindness. The prognosis quoad vitam is usually good, though it is poor if the nervous system is involved, or in the event of lung and large vessel lesions, since death may occur from haemoptysis or the rupture of aneurysms.

Abstract

By lymphoid myelofibrosis or hairy cell leukaemia or tricholeukaemia is meant an unusual haemopathic condition known only for the past few years. It is characterized pathognomonically by the presence of lymphocyte type cells with villous extroflexions, hence the name "hairy cell". Clinically the disease presents as an involutive myelopathy associated with splenomegaly, generally without any particular lymph gland involvement. The attention of students today is concentrated on the nature of the hairy cells; while some are inclined to admit their monocyte or histiocyte derivation, others consider that they derive from B lymphocytes. Therapeutically, almost everybody agrees that splenectomy is the only valid step. A case of H.C.L., which was typical from the clinical and laboratory viewpoints is reported. It is probable that certain haemopathic pictures once classified among atypical leucoses and lymphomas, would today be more correctly classed as hairy cell leukaemia.
