Anthropogenic activities are negatively affecting the flora and fauna of Madagascar, including its Endangered flagship lemur species, the ring-tailed lemur Lemur catta. Population numbers at some sites are rapidly declining, yet much of the species' habitat is insufficiently surveyed. Because widespread population assessments are critical to guiding conservation management strategies, additional data are needed to monitor L. catta population trends and to identify the limits of their geographical range. Here we report survey results confirming the presence of this species at 65 of 83 sites in southern and south-western Madagascar, including three subpopulations that were previously considered likely to be locally extinct. We identified a minimum of 792 L. catta individuals (summing only maximum group sizes at each site) and as many as 1,221 individuals (using estimated population counts). These findings help refine the distribution of L. catta and reaffirm their presence in areas of their historical geographical range. Identifying species occupancy at sites such as these provides valuable data to support species conservation, but also highlights the need for additional surveys throughout the range of the species. The most comprehensive phylogenomic reconstruction to date was generated on all nominal taxa within the lemur genus Propithecus. Over 200 wild-caught individuals were included in this study to evaluate the intra and interspecific relationships across this genus. Ultraconserved Elements (UCEs) resulted in well-supported phylogenomic trees. Complete mitochondrial genomes (CMGs) largely agreed with the UCEs, except where a mitochondrial introgression was detected between one clade of the diademed sifaka (Propithecus diadema) and the Milne-Edwards sifaka (P. edwardsi). Additionally, the crowned (P. coronatus) and Von der Decken's (P. deckeni) sifakas belonged to a single admixed lineage from UCEs. Further sampling across these two species is warranted to determine if our sampling represents a hybrid zone. P. diadema recovered two well-supported clades, which were dated and estimated as being ancient as the split between the Perrier's (P. perrierii) and silky (P. candidus) sifakas. The reconstructed demographic history of the two clades also varied over time. We then modeled the modern ecological niches of the two cryptic P. diadema clades and found that they were significantly diverged (p < 0.01). These ecological differences result in a very limited zone of geographic overlap for the P. diadema clades (<60 km2). Niche models also revealed that the Onive River acts as a potential barrier to dispersal between P. diadema and P. edwardsi. Further taxonomic work is required on P. diadema to determine if its taxonomic status should be revised. Simple Summary: The Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has made it harder to effectively protect and manage biodiversity, and this could make it more difficult for countries to show progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Here, we surveyed experts in early 2022 from 30 countries to collect data on the impacts of COVID-19 on non-human primate research and conservation initiatives. Of the 93 experts that responded to our survey, we found that 39% had not been able to visit any of their field sites since March 2020 and only one out of ten had managed to achieve at least 76–100% of their planned primate-related work since March 2020. Six out of ten respondents (61%) felt that primate conservation efforts in protected areas were worse than before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and one-third (33%) felt hunting was happening more frequently than before. This study provides evidence of the impacts of COVID-19 on progress towards achieving SDG15 (Life on Land) and provides practical lessons learned for biodiversity conservation efforts moving forward. No endemic Madagascar animal with body mass >10 kg survived a relatively recent wave of extinction on the island. From morphological and isotopic analyses of skeletal "subfossil" remains we can reconstruct some of the biology and behavioral ecology of giant lemurs (primates; up to ~160 kg) and other extraordinary Malagasy megafauna that survived into the past millennium. Yet, much about the evolutionary biology of these now-extinct species remains unknown, along with persistent phylogenetic uncertainty in some cases. Thankfully, despite the challenges of DNA preservation in tropical and subtropical environments, technical advances have enabled the recovery of ancient DNA from some Malagasy subfossil specimens. Here, we present a nuclear genome sequence (~2x coverage) for one of the largest extinct lemurs, the koala lemur Megaladapis edwardsi (~85 kg). To support the testing of key phylogenetic and evolutionary hypotheses, we also generated high-coverage nuclear genomes for two extant lemurs, Eulemur rufifrons and Lepilemur mustelinus, and we aligned these sequences with previously published genomes for three other extant lemurs and 47 nonlemur vertebrates. Our phylogenetic results confirm that Megaladapis is most closely related to the extant Lemuridae (typified in our analysis by E. rufifrons) to the exclusion of L. mustelinus, which contradicts morphology-based phylogenies. Our evolutionary analyses identified significant convergent evolution between M. edwardsi and an extant folivore (a colobine monkey) and an herbivore (horse) in genes encoding proteins that function in plant toxin biodegradation and nutrient absorption. These results suggest that koala lemurs were highly adapted to a leaf-based diet, which may also explain their convergent craniodental morphology with the small-bodied folivore Lepilemur. Habituation is a preliminary process, allowing observers to become more familiar with animals and record their behavior. Few studies have described the habituation process for non-human primate species and there is a dearth of information on the habituation process among lemurs. This study describes the habituation of the Critically Endangered greater bamboo lemur (Prolemur simus). We used continuous focal animal sampling (384 hours) to collect behavioral data on seven individuals from two groups in the Vatovavy forest, southeastern Madagascar. We categorized our behavior data into two response types: habituated behaviors and non-habituated behaviors. Study animals were considered habituated when they showed an increased tolerance to human observers permitting focal animal data collection with minimal non-habituated responses. There were no significant differences among individuals for both habituated and non-habituated behaviors, therefore, all data were pooled together. Distance from observer and height of animals in the forest significantly decreased during the habituation process. By the end of the study, the frequency of habituated behaviors significantly increased. In conjunction with previously reported findings for this species, this study concludes that greater bamboo lemurs can be habituated in approximately 13-16 weeks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Madagascar is experiencing some of the most persistent and alarming rates of anthropogenic forest loss, threatening its endemic flora and fauna. Numerous factors contribute to this forest degradation and loss, but in Madagascar it is most often attributed to heavy human reliance on forest products for income and survival. Montagne des Français (MDF) is a forest in northern Madagascar and the last remaining home of the Critically Endangered northern sportive lemur (Lepilemur septentrionalis). We assessed the type and frequency of anthropogenic disturbances observed at MDF, as well as the forest loss and fragmentation in this region over six decades. To assess current conditions, we systematically recorded occurrences of anthropogenic disturbances in ten lemur home ranges and three trails over two field seasons (June to July 2016; February to May 2017). To assess historical landcover change, we analyzed six, classified, 30-m resolution forest cover maps from 1953, 1973, 1990, 2000, 2010 and 2014. We recorded a total of 1,412 human-caused disturbances of eight different types in about 15 ha. Felled trees were the most frequently observed disturbance, with Bonaramatsigny (Leucaena leucocephala) the most frequently felled species. Forest cover at MDF drastically decreased from 76% in 1953, to 24% in 2014. Our results indicate that human disturbances are widespread and pervasive, contributing to overall forest cover loss and fragmentation at MDF, which impact the quality, connectivity, and availability of habitat for endemic lemurs of this region. The northern sportive lemur (Lepilemur septentrionalis) is one of the most endangered primates in the world. Surveys from 2012 and 2013 identified only 52 individuals, all occurring in small, isolated forest fragments within its historic range. Further exacerbating the issue, the ever-increasing human population of the nearby city of Antsiranana is driving demand for biofuel, which is supplied by the production of charcoal from the forests of Montagne des Français, where the biggest remaining population of northern sportive lemurs resides. Despite the designation of Montagne des Français as a protected area in 2015, illicit anthropogenic activities persist, threatening the remaining population of this Critically Endangered lemur. Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium and the Madagascar Biodiversity Partnership conducted two month-long surveys in Montagne des Français to obtain a current population estimate of L. septentrionalis and approximate focal locations for future conservation initiatives for the species. Our surveys identified 87 individuals in Montagne des Français, almost all of them restricted to the central forest fragments, with northern sportive lemurs being absent or near absent in the northern and southernmost parcels. It appears the population in this region has increased in the last six years, possibly because of the creation of the protected area and the efforts of Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium and the Madagascar Biodiversity Partnership in collaboration with the regional gendarmerie and officials under the Direction Régionale de l'Environnement et du Développement Durable of the Diana region to patrol the forests and prevent anthropogenic destruction. However, it is also possible that this increase is artificial due to the loss and fragmentation of their forest, causing the lemurs to be more densely populated in the remaining forest patches than has been evident in previous studies. Regardless, results of this survey suggest that northern sportive lemurs should remain listed as Critically Endangered, and effective protection of this species will require further research, along with habitat restoration and regular patrolling by local enforcement to prevent further degradation of the remaining forests.
