Abstract

This paper presents the main achievements of the joint Saudi-Italian archaeological project in the al-Jawf region (Saudi Arabia), with a particular focus on Dūmat al-Jandal, ancient Assyrian Adummatu and Nabataean Dumah. Since 2009 the project (Heritage Commission, Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, University of Napoli L'Orientale, The Barakat Trust) is investigating the ancient oasis and its pivotal role in al-Jawf and northern Arabia trade routes, dealing with a prehistoric (Holocene) panorama and revealing the eighth- to seventh-century BC Assyrian occupational phase as well as the Nabataean, Roman, and Byzantine periods up to the coming of Islam. Seasons 2019 to 2022 were particularly productive both for the definition of the geoarchaeological map of al-Jawf (mainly prehistoric features) and for the study of the settlement strategies of this huge oasis during its long history, as well as for the rediscovery of its ancient necropolis and historical market. Abstract

[Italiano]: Questo Manuale di geoarcheologia. Un approccio geomorfologico da remoto intende offrirsi come strumento di formazione e conoscenza a quanti, studenti universitari, ricercatori e cultori della materia, intendano approfondire lo studio dell’ambiente considerato come contenitore delle testimonianze del passato nella sua perenne evoluzione di forme e di risorse. Esso raccoglie l’esperienza acquisita sul campo, nel corso di vari decenni di attività di ricognizione e scavo, da parte dei suoi Autori in Italia e in numerosi paesi del vicino e medio-oriente, del centro Asia e del nord Africa. Ricerche sostenute e condotte sempre con l’ausilio di un punto prospettico privilegiato, quale quello offerto dalle varie immagini telerilevate riprese con sensori differenti da piattaforme aeree e satellitari in periodi temporali successivi, la cui interpretazione è stata sempre confrontata con le osservazioni dirette, ovvero con la cosiddetta ‘verità terreno’. Proprio questa stretta integrazione tra paesaggio, risorse del territorio ed emergenze antropiche più o meno antiche costituisce l’elemento portante del libro, declinato attraverso numerosi ed esaustivi esempi di analisi in vari ambienti dell’area mediterranea, del Vicino Oriente e dell’Asia che vedono applicato un approccio teorico ampiamente illustrato nella prima parte del volume. Abstract

Following a 40-year tradition of research conducted by the University of Naples L’Orientale in the Arabian Peninsula, since 2009 the Italian Archaeological Mission in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has been carrying out research activities at the site of Dûmat al-Jandal (ancient Adummatu) and in the North Arabian region of Jawf. The research, which initially focused on the ancient oasis and rediscovered major cultural phases from Assyrian times to the advent of Islam, now spans a broader spectrum of contexts and disciplines. Archaeological excavations in the oasis are complemented by restoration and consolidation work (which has already contributed to Dûmat al-Jandal’s entry on the UNESCO Tentative List); as well as remote geoarchaeological activities have been implemented, which have both exponentially enriched the mapping of the region’s cultural heritage, identifying over 18,000 prehistoric sites, and contributed to the training of Italian and Saudi collaborators on the production of remotely sensed archaeological maps based on the use of photointerpretation and remote paleoenvironment recognition. Therefore, this contribution would like to present the most recent scientific activities and major achievements of the Mission, as well as all those activities aimed at enhancing a cultural heritage straddling South-Arabia, the Levant, and Mesopotamia. Abstract

In January 2014, the upgrading of the Sinaw-Mahout-Duqm Expressway made necessary the excavation of several clusters of graves along the banks of Wadi Uyun, which would have been eventually destroyed by the road track. The forty funerary structures excavated testify to a millenary occupation of this area, which was inhabited from the end of the fourth millennium BC onward. Though results have been extremely significant for all historical periods, the most interesting discovery has been a funerary complex dating to the first half of the first millennium AD, composed by the underground deposition of a 50-years old man and by the adjoined graves of two Arabian camels buried in separate pits, which were sacrificed in the course of a complex ceremony.

Abstract

ll volume raccoglie 11 contributi che da diverse ottiche disciplinari e metodologiche affrontano il tema dell’uso che della scrittura è stato fatto in diverse società e diversi momenti del mondo antico – in particolare nel Mediterraneo orientale – dalla comparsa dei primi documenti cuneiformi, e del complesso problema del rapporto tra lingua, scrittura e immagini, alla diffusione degli alfabeti classici. Che la scrittura, nelle sue diverse manifestazioni, dalle monumentali iscrizioni ‘ufficiali’ alle sue più modeste espressioni quali i graffiti sia uno strumento privilegiato di informazione e conoscenza, è dato più che acquisito. Come si evince dal titolo il focus del volume è posto piuttosto sulla molteplicità dei piani di lettura riconoscibili in ogni tipo di testo considerato in relazione al supporto, e più in generale al contesto di produzione e di uso nelle sue numerose articolazioni, di strumento amministrativo, contabile, politico, propagandistico, la cui efficacia spesso va al di là della stessa comprensione immediata dei testi. Si propongono quindi riflessioni sul rapporto tra segni, lingue e immagini, tra scrittura lingua e identità, tra scrittura, lingua e controllo politico, come spunti per ulteriori riflessioni e approfondimenti. Le livre rassemble 11 contributions issues de différentes optiques méthodologiques et disciplinaires qui traitent de l'utilisation de l'écriture dans différentes sociétés et différentes époques du monde antique – en particulier de la Méditerranée orientale – de l'apparition des premiers documents cunéiformes et du problème complexe de la relation entre langue, écriture et images, à la diffusion des alphabets classiques. C’est un fait acquis que l’écriture, dans ses diverses manifestations, depuis les inscriptions « officielles » monumentales jusqu’à ses expressions plus modestes telles que les graffiti, est un instrument privilégié d’information et de connaissance. Comme le montre le titre, le livre met plutôt l’accent sur la multiplicité des plans de lecture reconnaissables dans chaque type de texte considéré en relation avec son support, et plus généralement dans le contexte de la production et de l’utilisation dans ses nombreuses articulations, en tant qu’outil administratif, politique, de propagande, dont l’efficacité va souvent au-delà de la compréhension immédiate des textes. Nous proposons donc des réflexions sur la relation entre les signes, les langues et les images, entre la langue l’écriture et l'identité, entre l'écriture, la langue et le contrôle politique, autant de suggestions pour des réflexions et des discussions ultérieures.

Au cours du Ier millénaire av. J.-C., les royaumes caravaniers de l’Arabie du Sud atteignent leur apogée social et économique. De riches témoignages monumentaux et architectoniques révèlent ce système social composite : temples, sanctuaires, palais royaux, maisons, nécropoles et barrages impressionnants. Même si l’Arabie du Sud manque de sources textuelles locales dédiées à la théorie de l’architecture, une classe spécifique d’épigraphes, les « inscriptions de construction », nous éclaire sur le point de vue sud-arabique à propos des pratiques architectoniques. During the first millennium BCE the caravan kingdoms of South Arabia reached their social and economic apogee. A wide range of monumental architectonic evidence testifies of this composite social system: temples, sanctuaries, royal palaces, houses, necropolises and impressive hydraulic constructions. Although South Arabia lacks of inner textual sources addressed to the theory of architecture, a particular class of epigraphs, the ‘construction inscriptions’, shed light on the South Arabian point of view regarding the architectonic practices.

Abstract

International audience; The second season of archaeological study of the Dûmat al-Jandal oasis (Saudi Arabia) by the Joint Saudi-Italian-French Archaeological Project took place from October 7th to November 13th, 2011. Results obtained this year were signi cant, in particular the discovery of several Neolithic sites to the south of Dûma, that of a Nabatean ‘triclinium’ and the base of a presumably ‘Roman’ tower on the Western sector’s promontory. These discoveries lead one to consider the setting up of long-term collaborations with specialists from a number of fields (Prehistorian, pottery experts specializing in classical periods, archaeo-botanists, etc...) and induce new thoughts on the place of Nabatean and Roman culture in the region. They also enable one to consider the continuation of Saudi-Italian-French collaboration and future research, in an atmosphere of confidence and sharing.
