A UNIT OF PROGRAMED LEARNING MATERIALS WAS PRESENTED ON THE PRINCIPLES AND PROCEDURES OF LAND JUDGING AND PLANT NUTRITION. IN HIS PREPARATION, THE AUTHOR FIRST IDENTIFIED PRINCIPLES AND FACTS NECESSARY FOR EFFECTIVE LAND CLASSIFICATION AND PLANT NUTRITION BY EXAMINING RELEVANT SCIENTIFIC REPORTS. USING THIS INFORMATION, HE THEN FORMED A TEAM OF 16 VOCATIONAL AGRICULTURE TEACHERS TO DEVELOP AND TENTATIVELY EVALUATE THE PROGRAMED MATERIALS. THESE TEACHERS WERE ENGAGED IN EXPERIMENTAL USE OF THE MATERIALS AT THE TIME OF REPORTING, AND EVIDENCE OF INSTRUCTIONAL RESULTS WAS NOT THEN AVAILABLE. PRINCIPLES AND FACTS NECESSARY FOR EFFECTIVE ANIMAL NUTRITION PRACTICES WERE IDENTIFIED BY EXAMINATION OF RECENT SCIENTIFIC REPORTS. UTILIZING THIS INFORMATION, THE AUTHOR INVOLVED 16 VOCATIONAL AGRICULTURE TEACHERS IN THE DEVELOPMENT AND EXPERIMENTAL USE OF A UNIT OF PROGRAMED LEARNING MATERIALS. INSTRUCTIONAL RESULTS WERE NOT AVAILABLE AT THE TIME OF REPORTING. THERE WAS SUBSTANTIAL EVIDENCE, HOWEVER, THAT TEACHER INVOLVEMENT ACTIVATED THE ANALYTICAL ASSESSMENT OF OBJECTIVES AND INTEREST IN INNOVATIVE INSTRUCTION. THE OBJECTIVE OF THIS STUDY WAS TO OBTAIN UP-TO-DATE FACTS ABOUT CLUSTERS OF TASKS PERFORMED BY WASHINGTON STATE FARM OPERATORS ENGAGED PRIMARILY IN PRODUCING GRAIN, LIVESTOCK, DAIRY COMMODITIES, POULTRY, FOREST PRODUCTS, HORTICULTURAL COMMODITIES, AND GENERAL FARMING COMMODITIES. FROM A RANDOM SAMPLE OF 267 FARMERS REPRESENTING THOSE CATEGORIES 178 RETURNED USEABLE QUESTIONNAIRES DESIGNED TO DETERMINE PERFORMANCE OF TASKS CLASSIFIED AS ANIMAL CARE, PLANT PRODUCTION, LAND MANAGEMENT, HARVESTING AND PROCESSING, GENERAL MANAGEMENT, MARKETING, EQUIPMENT USE AND CARE, AND BUILDING MAINTENANCE AND CONSTRUCTION. DATA COLLECTED WERE SUMMARIZED BY PRODUCTION AREA. RESULTS SHOWED THAT TASKS CLASSIFIED AS MANAGEMENT, MARKETING, ANIMAL CARE, AND PLANT PRODUCTION ARE PERFORMED BY LARGE PERCENTAGES OF MOST CATEGORIES OF FARM OPERATORS. THE NEED FOR BROAD HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAMS TO ENCOMPASS THE BREADTH AND COMPLEXITY OF AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTION AND AGRI-BUSINESSES. A BIBLIOGRAPHY AND THE QUESTIONNAIRE ARE INCLUDED. (DM)

The effects of involving vocational agriculture teachers in the development and experimental use of overhead projection masters were tested in this study. Sixteen teachers attended a workshop and outlined the content for an experimental set of masters. After experimental use of this set at a subsequent workshop, 35 vocational agriculture teachers evaluated the usefulness of the masters, recommended revisions, and suggested additional masters. The final set of experimental masters was made available to the state's teachers for use in their classes during the 1966-67 school year. Returned questionnaires indicated that 83 percent of the teachers used the masters during the school year, an additional 6 percent planned to use the masters as soon as equipment was available, and 89 percent desired access to additional material of this type. It was concluded that cooperative work on instructional materials by teachers stimulates interest in their use of such materials and broadens their concepts of instruction. Recommended uses of the masters, methods for using masters, methods for using masters to make transparencies, a prepared set of transparencies, and the questionnaire sent to the teachers are included in the document. The article gives a step-by-step procedure for vocational teachers to follow in determining the appropriateness of the reading level of specific instructional materials to their students' reading skills. An example is given of the procedure applied to "The Stockman's Handbook." (AJ)

To determine where vocational education decisions are made in the administrative hierarchy of the school system and to measure the extent of agreement concerning the location of decision responsibility, superintendents, principals, and 204 vocational teachers in 22 Ohio secondary schools were interviewed using a decision analysis instrument composed of 45 decisions. The respondents generally agreed upon the location of decision responsibility for 38 of the 45 decisions. By using the same analysis instrument, a jury of experts in school administration were in agreement for 35 of these 38 decisions, inferring that experts in educational administration can project decision-making functions in secondary schools. Greater agreement in perception by the respondents was found concerning teachers' responsibilities, inferring that teachers' decisional functions are more commonly recognized than are those of the principal or superintendent. So that staff may be trained to make decisions within their particular function, more research should be conducted to define decision responsibilities of teachers, principals, and superintendents. The authors describe a summer workshop in rangeland management for vocational agriculture teachers in Utah, with extension agents from six western states as instructors to provide specialized knowledge and successful teaching methods. Success of this cooperation led to a joint extension agricultural and education research effort. (MF)
