1. Abstraction in Computer Science Education: An Overview

Abstract

When we "think like a computer scientist," we are able to systematically solve problems in different fields, create software applications that support various needs, and design artefacts that model complex systems. Abstraction is a soft skill embedded in all those endeavours, being a main cornerstone of computational thinking. Our overview of abstraction is intended to be not so much systematic as thought provoking, inviting the reader to (re)think abstraction from different -- and perhaps unusual -- perspectives. After presenting a range of its characterisations, we will explore abstraction from a cognitive point of view. Then we will discuss the role of abstraction in a range of computer science areas, including whether and how abstraction is taught. Although it is impossible to capture the essence of abstraction in one sentence, one section or a single paper, we hope our insights into abstraction may help computer science educators to better understand, model and even dare to teach abstraction skills.

Abstract

Computer programs are part of our daily life, we use them, we provide them with data, they support our decisions, they help us remember, they control machines, etc. Programs are made by people, but in most cases we are not their authors, so we have to decide if we can trust them. Programs enable computers and computer-controlled machines to behave in a large variety of ways. They bring the intrinsic power of computers to life. Programs have a variety of properties that all citizens must be aware of. Due to the intangible nature of programs, most of these properties are very unusual, but important to understand the digital world. In this position paper, we describe the Nature of Programs in the form of knowledge statements, accompanied by examples from everyday life to clarify their meaning. Everything is formulated in an easily understandable manner and avoids obscure technical language. We suggest that these knowledge statements must be imparted to all teachers and school students. A great way to learn and experience the nature of programs is to develop programs yourself.

3. Getting Inspired by Bebras Tasks. How Italian Teachers Elaborate on Computing Topics

Abstract

The Bebras challenge offers pupils and teachers an engaging opportunity to discover informatics, by solving small tasks that aim at promoting computational thinking. Explanations and comments that reveal the computing concepts underlying the tasks are published after the contest, and teachers are encouraged to use this material in their school practice. In this paper we present an exploratory study aimed at investigating how teachers can make use of Bebras material; in particular our interest is understanding whether teachers are able to identify, comprehend, and apply the computing concepts implied by Bebras tasks, and how they can integrate them into their teaching practice. We qualitatively analyzed teaching projects developed by Italian teachers during a workshop on computing education and based on Bebras tasks; the analysis shows that teachers are in general able to build upon the tasks soundly, but it also raises some critical issues.

Abstract

\omega-languages are becoming more and more relevant nowadays when most applications are 'ever-running'. Recent literature, mainly under the motivation of widening the application of model checking techniques, extended the analysis of these languages from the simple regular ones to various classes of languages with 'visible syntax structure', such as visibly pushdown languages (VPLs). Operator precedence languages (OPLs), instead, were originally defined to support deterministic parsing and, though seemingly unrelated, exhibit interesting relations with these classes of languages: OPLs strictly include VPLs, enjoy all relevant closure properties and have been characterized by a suitable automata family and a logic notation. In this paper we introduce operator precedence \omega-languages (\omega OPLs), investigating various acceptance criteria and their closure properties. Whereas some properties are natural extensions of those holding for regular languages, others required novel investigation techniques. Application-oriented examples show the gain in expressiveness and verifiability offered by \omega OPLs w.r.t. smaller classes., Comment: 38 pages. Abstract

Floyd languages (FL), alias Operator Precedence Languages, have recently received renewed attention thanks to their closure properties and local parsability which allow one to apply automatic verification techniques (e.g. model checking) and parallel and incremental parsing. They properly include various other classes, noticeably Visual Pushdown languages. In this paper we provide a characterization of FL in terms a monadic second order logic (MSO), in the same style as Buchi's one for regular languages. We prove the equivalence between automata recognizing FL and the MSO formalization.

Abstract

Operator precedence grammars define a classical Boolean and deterministic context-free family (called Floyd languages or FLs). FLs have been shown to strictly include the well-known visibly pushdown languages, and enjoy the same nice closure properties. We introduce here Floyd automata, an equivalent operational formalism for defining FLs. Abstract

There can be many reasons why students fail to answer correctly to summative tests in advanced computer science courses: often the cause is a lack of prerequisites or misconceptions about topics presented in previous courses. One of the ITiCSE 2020 working groups investigated the possibility of designing assessments suitable for differentiating between fragilities in prerequisites (in particular, knowledge and skills related to introductory programming courses) and advanced topics. This paper reports on an empirical evaluation of an instrument focusing on data structures, among those proposed by the ITiCSE working group. The evaluation aimed at understanding what fragile knowledge and skills the instrument is actually able to detect and to what extent it is able to differentiate them. Our results support that the instrument is able to distinguish between some specific fragilities (e.g., value vs. reference semantics), but not all of those claimed in the original report. In addition, our findings highlight the role of relevant skills at a level between prerequisite and advanced skills, such as program comprehension and reasoning about constraints. We also suggest ways to improve the questions in the instrument, both by improving the distractors of the multiple-choice questions, and by slightly changing the content or phrasing of the questions. We argue that these improvements will increase the effectiveness of the instrument in assessing prerequisites as a whole, but also to pinpoint specific fragilities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
