Abstract

Network virtualization is an essential technique for data center operators to provide traffic isolation, differentiated service, and security enforcement for multi-tenant services. However, traditional protocols used in local area networks may not be applicable for data center networks due to the difference in network topology. Recent research suggests that layer-2-in-layer-3 tunneling protocols may be the solution to address the challenges. In this article, we find via testbed experiments that directly applying these tunneling protocols toward network virtualization only results in poor performance due to the scalability problems. Specifically, we observe that the bottlenecks actually reside inside the servers. We then propose a CPU offloading mechanism that exploits a packet steering function to balance packet processing among available CPU threads, thus greatly improving network performance. Compared to a virtualized network created based on VXLAN, our scheme improves the bandwidth for up to almost 300 percent on a 10 Gb/s link between a pair of tunnel endpoints. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

User mobility in WLANs becomes more and more popular because of the wide deployment of WLANs and numerous applications on it. Some of these applications, for example multimedia applications, require fast handoffs among access points to maintain the quality of service. In order to support multimedia applications for roaming users, IEEE 802.11i defines pre-authentication to reduce the re-authentication delay. The primary drawback of IEEE 802.11i pre-authentication is that the full 802.1x/EAP authentication consumes too much overhead. This paper provides a risk assessment of an existing operational computer network used to control a boiler system generating power and heat for an installation. The methodology used in evaluating the security of the system is described along with specific recommendations for minimizing the risk associated with connecting the network to the Internet for the purposes of remote data collection and administration. The internet and local area networks, which are growing rapidly, have witnessed an increase in malicious threads. Therefore, the deployment of security tools is necessary for protecting organisations from external attacks on their information systems, preventing information losses and ensuring secure communication. To this end, the primary objective of this paper is to propose an enhanced methodology for supporting the decision maker in selecting the appropriate security tools for information systems in organisations. First, we construct a security criteria hierarchy as the decision criteria. Then, based on the criteria, we compute the competitiveness score of each security tool and the relative weights among different types of security tools utilising an analytic hierarchy process (AHP). Finally, in order to incorporate a trade-off between all the competitiveness aspects associated with the security tools and costs, a prioritising/weighting mixed integer goal programming (GP) model or a combination of mixed integer GP and weighted-sum model to determine the optimal solutions for the security tools is employed. The Man-in-the-Middle (MiM) attack is used by attackers to perform sniffing activities in switched LAN networks. The potential damage to a network from sniffing activities can be very significant. This paper proposes a mechanism for detecting malicious hosts performing MiM attack in switched LAN networks. The proposed mechanism consists of sending trap and spoofed packets to the network's hosts, after which, malicious sniffing hosts can be identified efficiently and accurately by collecting and analyzing the response packets. The effect of the proposed mechanism on the performance of the network is discussed and shown to be minimal. The invention of public-key cryptography makes many new network applications, such as electronic commerce (CE), possible. However, the widely used Internet is open and unprotected. Therefore, verifying the legitimacy of an individual's public key is very important. Most of the key authentication schemes require one or more trustworthy authorities to authenticate the key of a user. Consequently, the system security is mainly dependent on the honesty of these third parties. Unfortunately, a security solution in wide area networks (for example, the Internet) often cannot be applied to local area networks directly without any modification. Sometimes, a complete rebuild is necessary, especially for performance criteria consideration. In this paper, we propose two simple key authentication schemes that require no certification authorities for computer systems in local area networks, in which a host is responsible for user authentication and it uses a designated password authentication mechanism. In recent years, trust negotiation has been proposed as a novel authorization solution for use in open-system environments, in which resources are shared across organizational boundaries. Researchers have shown that trust negotiation is indeed a viable solution for these environments by developing a number of policy languages and strategies for trust negotiation that have desirable theoretical properties. Further, existing protocols, such as TLS, have been altered to interact with prototype trust negotiation systems, thereby illustrating the utility of trust negotiation. Unfortunately, modifying existing protocols is often a time-consuming and bureaucratic process that can hinder the adoption of this promising technology. In this paper, we present Traust, a third-party authorization service that leverages the strengths of existing prototype trust negotiation systems. Traust acts as an authorization broker that issues access tokens for resources in an open system after entities use trust negotiation to satisfy the appropriate resource access policies. The Traust architecture was designed to allow Traust to be integrated either directly with newer trust-aware applications or indirectly with existing legacy applications; this flexibility paves the way for the incremental adoption of trust negotiation technologies without requiring widespread software or protocol upgrades. We discuss the design and implementation of Traust, the communication protocol used by the Traust system, and its performance. We also discuss our experiences using Traust to broker access to legacy resources, our proposal for a Traust-aware version of the GridFTP protocol, and Traust's resilience to attack. Furthermore, these solutions use either a computationally-intensive cryptographic scheme, the a priori relation between the host and the network or a modified protocol stack at every host. In this paper, we provide a seamless and transparent solution to eliminate IP broadcasting and thus eliminate all problems related to IP broadcasting.
