Turkey's economic impact has been severe due to the lack of international tourists and the Covid-19 pandemic. Specifically, the tourist destination Çeşme has suffered economic fluctuations due to decreased international visitors, the Russia-Ukraine war, and insufficient domestic tourists to fill the gap. The study aims to identify deficiencies that help stakeholders manage tourism development amid Covid-19 and the Russia-Ukraine war. The data were collected through semi-structured interviews (n = 34) with local business owners operating for at least 25 years. The study provides insights into the recent tourism development during the pandemic and presents a high level of resilience among local businesses. The business owners perceive the current pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war situation differently psychologically. Most resilient business owners look for business opportunities by adapting their business models for long-term survival despite the pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war affecting international tourism. International franchising ,emerging market ,developing country ,franchise ,local business ,competitive advantage ,resources and capabilities ,business strategy ,food industry - Abstract
Franchising has become one of the most applied business strategies for international expansion, as it provides economies of scale and flexibility to global operations. It usually offers the benefits of strong brand name, business know-how and experience that give businesses a competitive edge in overseas markets. The growth of franchising model globally and its impact on host-country firms is most noticeable in developing economies, as it forces local firms to evolve and adopt new practices to defend their market positions. This thesis, therefore, aims to examine the effect of international franchising on emerging market firms and the different ways to achieve a competitive advantage in developing economies by identifying resources, capabilities and strategies of both franchisees and local businesses. To address the objective of this thesis, an exploratory, qualitative case study is conducted by employing semi-structured interviews with 14 case companies in Ukraine and Georgia, which helps the researcher to answer the study questions and understand the experiences and perceptions of the participants. The collected data is analysed with the use of thematic analysis and fuzzy set of qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) to gain an in-depth knowledge of the research phenomenon and to enhance the credibility of the results. The findings of this study stress the importance of marketing activities, customer service development, localisation, pricing strategy and financial resources as the key conditions for businesses to gain success in developing economies. However, the analysis reveals that there are huge differences between the resources, capabilities and practices of international franchisees and emerging-market firms. Franchisees of well-established franchisors benefit from business knowledge, training support and worldwide experience but follow a rigid and formalised structure that gives them less flexibility. On the other hand, developing-country firms have the local market knowledge, autonomy, and the capacity to learn indirectly from competitors, but lack resources and technological capabilities. This thesis, therefore, suggests alternative paths and effective solutions to both to drive firm's competitiveness when particular resources and/or capabilities are present or absent. There are several contributions made to knowledge by this thesis. The new theoretical insights are developed through identifying the most significant drivers of competitive advantage and suggesting different configurational frameworks. The results also present practical implications by providing managerially amendable options to deal with intense competition within the food industry in emerging economies. Finally, the methodological ii contribution of this thesis lies in the application of fsQCA that allows researchers to see qualitative results transferred into quantitative findings with a clear and transparent way, thus, it would be beneficial not only for qualitative researchers but for scholars who follow quantitative approach.

Home-based enterprises (HBEs), which involve the use of one's residence for commercial activities, have become a prominent research focus in the fields of entrepreneurship, sustainability, and environmental management. Despite this, the lack of data impairs the ability to accurately evaluate the economic merits of this rapidly growing business model relative to its environmental effects. This article, detailing data on the demographic features of HBE operators in Ikot-Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria, contributes to ongoing data mining efforts towards realistic framing of HBEs. The current data represent HBEs from five Ikot-Ekpene neighborhoods: Uruk-Uso, Ifuho, G.R.A, Ibiakpan Akanawan, and Ikot Ekpene Urban. The target population of the survey included operators of HBEs and residents. A total of 400 questionnaires were issued through systematic random sampling across the five neighborhoods. The entire sample yielded 330 valid responses, which underwent a descriptive statistical analysis, compiled, and presented in tables and bar charts. Analysis of the data provided insight into the rating of the economic relevance of HBEs in relation to their associated environmental impacts. These data provide helpful insights for researchers and policymakers involved in regulating and controlling activities in the urban sphere. They also serve as a reference point for more rigorous studies on environmental management and urban informality in cities.

Despite the potential of bike-sharing services to influence the local economy, the impact of these services on local businesses has been overlooked. Hence, this research aims to examine how a bike-sharing program influences the success of local businesses. We analyzed sales data of 2,928 local restaurants recorded from February to August 2019, along with bike rentals made near the restaurants. Our findings show that the number of bike rentals around a restaurant is positively associated with its sales. Further, the impact of bike rentals intensifies when there are more subway passengers around the restaurants but weakens with more bus passengers. Moreover, non-franchise and lesspopular restaurants benefit more from bike-sharing programs. Our findings offer significant contributions to the existing literature by theorizing the value of sharing economy in the local economy. Practically, our results provide strategic implications for policymakers, bike-sharing service providers, and local businesses to effectively use sharing economy programs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Online reviews influence customer decisions and present publicly available data to investigate differences between customer evaluations for local and chain businesses. We conduct a text analysis on a sample of 80,728 online customer reviews of quick-service restaurants to examine how the impact of dining experience attributes on customer evaluation differs between the two restaurant types. Estimation of multilevel multinomial models reveals that customer reviews for local restaurants have less polarized sentiment than chain restaurants. This polarization is also evident for sentiment usage related to four dining experience attributes: food, service, ambience, and price. Although food offerings are essential to get high ratings for local restaurants, service quality has a relatively greater impact on customer satisfaction for chains. Although customer reviews favor local restaurants, they need powerful testimonials for differentiation due to high review valence among their local competitors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Sustainable building design has grown in importance over the past three decades on every scale, from the global to the small, and in every industry, including the building and tourist sectors. While there are many different types of hotel buildings around the world to meet the demands of guests, their diverse existence can also benefit the local environment and communities through sustainable building design. Hotel buildings have the potential to influence and inspire global transmission of sustainable building methods and their advantages since they are built to attract guests and are reflective of the local culture. Thus, this research aims to build a model to assess the sustainability of hotel buildings as a flexible model according to the different regions' conditions and priorities. The primary method used in this study is to synthesize sustainable building evaluation criteria and various other sustainability measurement methods developed for buildings. The outcome of this model can be used to assess hotel buildings at the early stages of design, new construction, and amid existing building's renovations. This study further suggested adapting the model according to the local requirements and goals of a selected region after designing the assessment model as a globally applicable one. A mixed-method approach utilizing both qualitative and quantitative data methods was used in this article. The qualitative method was developed based on observation and interviews with different stakeholders, and the LEED certification was used as a platform for the quantitative method. With the assessment parameters model in mind, a localized version of the model was applied to one hotel building as a case study. Results indicate that the hotel building should be assessed using a localized rather than a global model to have a more sustainable hotel building in the selected area. The selected hotel was tested with the developed LEED model and the results show that the hotel, as an independent building, could be more sustainable in terms of environmental sustainability but that when the social and cultural indicators were applied from the localized model, the results indicate that the hotel would not be sustainable. Finally, this study revealed that the localized model could work over all the countries by considering each region's existing conditions. Subsequently, this model may help the tourism sector and hotel industries in selected contexts to benefit from sustainability in terms of environmental, socio-cultural, and economic aspects. In turn, these improvements help the local people in numerous ways to have a better quality of life. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We examined the effects of Vietnamese enterprise zones, under the initiative of the central government, on local businesses across different types of ownership of zone infrastructure developers (ZIDs). We constructed a panel of communes during 2000–2007 using data on zone‐based firms, local firms, and zones. We found that zones led to an increased number of firms and increased employment in the communes hosting the zones, even after excluding zone‐based firms. Our findings also suggest that private partnerships in ZIDs worked best in attracting firms to the zones. The spatial spillover effects of the zones occurred up to a distance of 14 km. - Abstract
In the past few decades, the local economic development (LED) policy has gained prominence in Ghana as an effective bottom-up approach for poverty reduction and rural development. Adopting this bottom-up approach to reducing poverty, this paper investigates the impact of local business and local employment creation on poverty reduction in Ghana by employing the moderating role of LED policy. Data were obtained through an online survey platform from 357 respondents from local government officials working within the various districts across the northern parts of Ghana. The study used structural equation model analytical tool to examine the relationships between the variables. The findings affirmed both local business and local employment creation as positive determinants of poverty reduction. Also, employing LED policy as a moderator, local business creation plays the most significant role in reducing poverty at a 1% significant level. However, the moderating role of LED policy between local employment and poverty reduction was insignificant. Also, local employment insignificantly mediated local business and poverty reduction. Therefore, there is a need for development actors at local and international levels to collectively make a continuous effort to drive the local economic development policy agenda. This can be done through the promotion of local businesses creation to improve standards of living and reduce poverty to the lowest level in Ghana and other developing countries at large. This study aims to find and analyze the profitability level of Fried Onion Small Business in Palu City, influenced by Patronage Buying Motives (PBM), which consist of company reputation, location of sales, selling price and guarantee to profitability. The population of this study was 52. Population was chosen based on small business that still survives in fried onion business as a local business. The sample taken by purposive sampling was 35. Data collection was carried out by distributing questionnaires to the managers of fried onion small businesses. The analytical tool used is multiple linear analysis. The results shows that F test of PBM had a significant influence on profitability at 0,822 or 82.2%. This means a very strong influence of the value of PBM. T-test shows that corporate reputation is of significant value of 0,286, location of sales – 0,426, and selling price has a significant value of the 0.235 influence on profitability, except guarantees that do not affect profitability because the value of 0.151 is less than the t table value of 2.0395. The impact of this study implies that small food businesses do not really need a guarantee like electronic products, because reputation and quality have become their guarantee.

The paper aims to emphasize the influence of an 996,027 Euros investment from non-reimbursable European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (E.A.F.R.D.) grants on a local community and the local economic environment. The working methodology consisted in the analysis of the documents that were the basis of the financing, including budgets and specific documentation. Data from the reports published by the Rural Investments Financing Agency under Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development were also used. The EU's rural development policy, aligned with the Common Agricultural Policy, aims to achieve three long-term strategic objectives: stimulating the competitiveness of agriculture; guaranteeing a sustainable management of natural resources and combating climate change favouring a balanced territorial development of rural communities, especially by supporting local economies and creating and maintaining jobs. Through this investment, it was proposed to modernize a network of agricultural exploitation roads with a total length of 11,349 m that serves an agricultural area of 1,178 ha, on the territory of the town that is the beneficiary of the financing. The number of modernized road sectors was 21. By implementing the project, access to a number of 11 economic agents from the agricultural field was facilitated and ensured, and 7 nonagricultural economic agents became directly accessible. The relevance of the study of local political regimes in Ukraine has been growing since the 2010s. This is due to the need to predict the behavior of local political actors after the transfer of a large number of authorities to them due to the reform of decentralization of power in Ukraine. In addition, practical studies of local political regimes make it possible to highlight the main features of formal and informal relationships between local political actors and central government, covering the essence and effects of the process of decentralization of power in Ukraine. In this sense, the purpose of the article is to: determine the key parameters of local political regimes; analyze the methods used by Ukrainian scientists when studying local political regimes in Ukraine; define the parameters for comparing local political regimes in the Ukrainian context based on a maximalist approach. Given the results of the study, a periodization of the existing studies of local political regimes in Ukraine is proposed, particularly taking into account the existing studies in the format of case studies and regional comparisons. Based on them, the key parameters for the formation of a methodology for comparing local political regimes were identified, which should include indices and indicators for analyzing democracy and the level of decentralization of power within a particular local regime, as well as identifying the influence of local authorities, business and civil society on the processes of forming the agenda and determining strategic directions of socio-economic growth. ECONOMIC impact , *PEDESTRIANS , *PEDESTRIAN areas , *CONSUMPTION (Economics) , *BICYCLE equipment , *TRAFFIC lanes , *ELECTRIC bicycles - Abstract
Local officials in North America frequently face opposition to new or expanded bicycle or pedestrian facilities. The most vocal opponents are usually motorists and local business owners who fear that the removal of or reductions in vehicular parking or travel lanes will reduce patronage from motorists and that any increased patronage from pedestrians or cyclists will not offset the lost revenues. A lack of direct evidence on the economic impacts of facilities on local businesses has made it difficult to support or debunk such fears. A lack of quantitative evidence in particular has prevented the incorporation of such impacts into cost–benefit analyses. The issue has received enough attention from researchers in recent years that a review of the evidence is now warranted. We reviewed the relevant literature and identified 23 studies, focusing on the US and Canada, that either (1) quantified and compared consumer spending between active travellers and automobile users (n = 8), or (2) quantified an economic impact to local businesses following the installation of bicycle or pedestrian facilities (n = 15). Taken together, the studies indicate that creating or improving active travel facilities generally has positive or non-significant economic impacts on retail and food service businesses abutting or within a short distance of the facilities, though bicycle facilities might have negative economic effects on auto-centric businesses. The results are similar regardless of whether vehicular parking or travel lanes are removed or reduced to make room for the active travel facilities. The studies also highlight best practices for designing future research. Ten of the 15 studies that quantified an economic impact to local businesses used both before-and-after data and comparison sites or other statistical controls for variables unrelated to the active travel facility "treatment;" six of those used statistical testing. The purpose of this study is to develop a predictive model that increases the accuracy of business operational planning using data from a small business. By using Machine Learning (ML) techniques feature expansion, resampling, and combination techniques, it was possible to address several existing limitations in the available research. Then, the use of the novel technique of feature engineering allowed us to increase the accuracy of the model by finding 10 new features derived from the original ones and constructed automatically through the nonlinear relationships found between them. Finally, we built a rule-based classifier to predict the store's revenue with high accuracy. The results show the proposed approach open new possibilities for ML research applied to small and medium businesses.

Subsequently, this model may help the tourism sector and hotel industries in selected contexts to benefit from sustainability in terms of environmental, socio-cultural, and economic aspects. In turn, these improvements help the local people in numerous ways to have a better quality of life.

An exciting addition to the 29th SEA Games was the inclusion of three winter sports events. Boasting a new international-sized ice rink, the Malaysia National Ice Skating Stadium (MYNISS) located in a shopping mall in Selangor hosted these events and presented a unique opportunity to study local businesses that leveraged on winter sport events. Many studies in the past have investigated the economic impact of hosting major sports events but very few have examined whether local businesses take advantage of this opportunity to increase their revenue. This study employed the qualitative approach of observation, a useful and natural technique that collects data on actions and behaviours by going into "the field". The present study found that only 1 of 15 businesses studied employed any tactic to leverage on the winter sports event. Since these businesses were located directly around the ice rink, it is possible that the traders thought that increased sales would come naturally due to their favourable location. For future events, businesses can leverage on them using techniques such as having a sale, extending trading hours, advertising with tie-in promotions, providing thematic sales and entertainment. These tactics can be used to generate more business, and in turn, higher revenue not only for themselves and also other businesses in the shopping mall. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

COMMERCIAL strips , *GENTRIFICATION , *LAND use - Abstract
Commercial strips are common within metropolitan regions throughout the world and particularly within Canada and the USA. Planners have identified these linear clusters of commercial land use as a form of auto-oriented sprawl on the one hand, and as fertile ground for local independent businesses on the other. Despite the rapid churn of businesses in a number of gentrifying central cities, few studies have examined the distribution or cumulative impacts of commercial remodelling or its relationship to larger scale urban transformations. In this research, we demonstrate methods used to identify spatial patterns in central city remodelling activity. Getis Ord Gi*, also known as hot spot analysis, is used to identify clusters of reinvestment activity associated with locally owned restaurant and retail businesses. Associations with differences in urban form are observed, including clustering of independently owned restaurant and retail businesses along areas of commercial strips with smaller lots. Theories on the location of clusters in older buildings are also tested, with mixed results. In addition, we use a Redevelopment Impact Index to capture the degree of external modification to commercial buildings and the nature of changes in building usage. Point density analysis is used to identify areas where commercial remodels are likely to add up to entertainment and leisure zones. The results of statistical tests show some association between proximity to the restaurant and retail clusters and new, mixed use development. Thus, we illustrate methods of examining emerging landscapes of local restaurant and retail business and their relationship to larger scales of redevelopment. This methodology has applications in the study of incubation and retention of local businesses, land use planning and redevelopment along commercial strips, and gentrification studies. This paper argues that attacks of foreign nationals in most local communities were sparked by desperation precipitated by high rates of poverty and unemployment in South Africa. Additionally, there is citizens’ frustrations with the perceived competition for access to the available resources, especially among poor people who are unemployed with no formal business support from government. In South Africa’s twenty years of democracy, poverty and unemployment still remain critical concerns particularly among the poor in most townships and rural communities. Despite the country’s initiative to identify policies and strategies that could be adopted to address the status quo, the majority has continued to live in abject poverty and demeaning unemployment. Lack of economic opportunities in South Africa continues to create hatred between foreign nationals and locals, sparking xenophobic attacks. South African citizens accused foreigners of stealing their jobs and other opportunities. The article recommends that South Africa should create a harmonious business environment for both locals and foreign nationals running businesses.

Nyckelord: CBBE, Sociala medier marknadsföring, Små företag, Lokala företag, Kundrelation., Title: Small local businesses and social media- A qualitative study of small local companies' use of social media to benefit the brand's brand equity Level: Student thesis, final assignment for Bachelor Degree in Business Administration Author: Maja Helsing and Julia Strid Supervisor: Peter Ek Date: 2021 – June Aim: The aim of this study was to develop knowledge about how small local companies can improve their own brand equity by using social media. Method: We have used a deductive approach. A qualitative research method in the form of ten semi-structured interviews was conducted in the data collection, together with a netnographic examination. The respondents were employees of small local companies in a Swedish medium-sized city, whose task includes being responsible for the company's social media. Result & conclusions: The result show that it is beneficial for small local businesses to use social media. As a result, it contributes to higher brand awareness and creates better customer relationships, which has a positive effect on CBBE. Contribution of the thesis: This study contributes new knowledge about the positive effects of small local companies' use of social media. The study increases the existing knowledge regarding the benefits that exist and the greatest difficulties companies face. Suggestions for future research: This study has mainly examined retailers of products. It would therefore be interesting to carry out a similar study on either seller of their own product or service companies. Key words: CBBE, Social media marketing, SME, Local business, Customer relationship.

- Abstract
This report explores the extent to which place-based approaches can deliver positive economic and social outcomes in Scotland’s rural areas and small towns. We studied five case studies of place-based approaches in rural Scotland: 1. Tackling the climate emergency in Callander 2. Strengthening Communities in the Western Isles 3. A Heart for Duns: the changing role of a local development trust 4. Partnership working for place-based policy: lessons from Initiative at the Edge 5. Land reform policy and transformational community change Place-based approaches in rural Scotland have enabled community capacity building, community ownership/management of land and assets, and partnership-working to deliver local outcomes and services. A flexible national and regional place-based policy framework can be supportive of local place-based approaches, but should acknowledge different local circumstances, assets and needs, and the lived experiences of local people. Place-based approaches require financial and other development support/advice in the early stages. This might be particularly in relation to locally-led community planning to address place-based needs, acquiring local community assets and creating links between local actors and broader regional/national policy processes. More flexible place-based policy frameworks should be developed at national and regional level which facilitate cross-sectoral working, break down silos and encourage collaboration between different actors and governance levels (including communities and local authorities). The research identifies four recommendations to enhance rural place-based approaches: 1. Long-term, flexible investment in place-based approaches is needed to ensure the delivery of solutions rooted in community needs and local action. 2. Communities need to be able to operate with a degree of autonomy to increase competence, capacity and confidence at the local level. 3. This local autonomy needs support from national/regional level

We examined the effects of Vietnamese enterprise zones on local businesses based on different patterns of place-based policies as well as the ownership structure of the zone infrastructure developers (ZIDs). We constructed a panel of communes during 2000–2007 using a census survey of firms having more than nine employees and a census of zones and zone-based firms. We found that place-based policies led to growth in the number of jobs and firms in the communes where enterprise zones were located, even after excluding zone-based firms. Our findings also suggest that privately owned ZIDs worked best under corporate-tax incentives, while zones with a designated central government agency as the ZID had adverse spillover effects on business development in neighboring communes of the same district.

Thinking about an integrated curriculum is equivalent to think about combining enriching experience and knowledge throughout assisted pedagogical practice, collective planning, integrative projects creation, undergraduate and extension research as well as research projects and integrated professional practices. These are some of the groundbreaker practices used in order to achieve the goals set for one course. This integrative project concerns the development of a software that aims to manage a local food street market in Iporá, state of Goiás, by creating a mobile application that can ease the life of street market’s costumers by showing them the stands and its products along with their source and price, as well as improve the costumer-family farmers relationship. At first, a survey containing the food street markets that takes place in Iporá and the merchants’ profile was made, then the surveyed data were analyzed. And finally, the software was developed using Delphi computer language along with the database SQlite, and it was revealed that the application serves its purpose and is, by all means, according to the UX concepts.
