This paper evaluates the impact of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange's (CME) decision to close the livestock futures pits on the execution quality of customer orders. Our findings suggest that, prior to its closure, the livestock futures pit offers high immediacy execution and attracts large orders. Because such high immediacy orders generally execute faster and cost more, their migration to the electronic market after the pit closure explains why the execution of electronic orders becomes on average speedier and more expensive for customers who used to be active pit users. However, our results also indicate that these pit‐user customers face a lower overall execution cost following the pit closure when we account for all their orders, pit and electronic. Furthermore, in accordance with Article 6 of Regulation (EC) No 396/2005, the Applicant Gowan Crop Protection Ltd, submitted a request to the competent national authority in Latvia to set an import tolerance for zoxamide in onions (extrapolated to garlic and shallots) based on the use authorised in USA. The data submitted in support of the request were found to be sufficient to derive MRL proposals for all crops under assessment. Based on the risk assessment results, EFSA concluded that the short‐term and long‐term intake of residues resulting from the use of zoxamide according to the agricultural practices on onions, garlic and shallots is unlikely to present a risk to consumer health. Surplus dairy calves are commonly transported long distances from dairy farms to calf-raising facilities and livestock auctions. Current calf transportation research mainly describes physiological changes resulting from transportation. However, few studies have described the effects of transportation on calf behavior. The main objective of this study was to determine the effects of different durations of transportation (6, 12, and 16 h) on lying time and bouts in surplus dairy calves. A secondary objective of this study was to investigate whether calf age affected lying behavior around transportation. Surplus dairy calves (n = 175) were transported in 7 cohorts from 5 commercial dairy farms in Ontario to a single veal facility. On the day of transportation (d 0), calves were randomly assigned to 1 of 3 treatment groups: (1) 6 h (n = 60), (2) 12 h (n = 58), or (3) 16 h (n = 57) of continuous transportation by road. Calf lying and standing behaviors were recorded using HOBO data loggers (Hobo Pendant G Acceleration Data Logger, Onset Computer Corporation). Daily lying time (h/d) and bouts (no./d) were assessed from −1 to 3 d relative to transportation. The total time spent lying during transportation was assessed as the percentage of time lying (min lying/total min on the trailer × 100) from the time each calf was loaded onto the trailer until the time each calf was unloaded at the veal facility (n = 167). On the day of transportation (d 0), calves transported for 12 and 16 h spent less time lying (6 h: 17.1 h/d; 12 h: 15.9 h/d; 16 h: 15.0 h/d) and had more lying bouts (6 h: 21.9 bouts/d; 12 h: 25.8 bouts/d; 16 h: 29.8 bouts/d) compared with those transported for 6 h. On the day after transportation (d 1), calves transported for 16 h spent more time lying down than calves transported for 6 h (19.9 h/d vs. 18.8 h/d, respectively). In addition, during transportation, calves transported for 12 h and 16 h spent 5.8% and 7.6% more time lying down, respectively, than calves transported for 6 h. On each day relative to transportation (d −1 to 3), younger calves (2 to 5 d of age) spent a greater amount of time lying down than older calves (6 to 19 d of age) and, overall, had a greater number of lying bouts. The results of this study suggest that longer durations of transportation influence the lying behavior of surplus dairy calves, resulting in more fatigue during and after the journey and, therefore, potentially have negative implications for calf welfare. This study evaluated the associations between estimated distance from farms' locations to auction markets, and health indicators of surplus dairy calves sold during summer 2019 and winter 2020 in Québec, Canada. A total of 3,610 animals from 1,331 different farms were used in this cross-sectional cohort study. Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) were obtained for each farm and the 2 participating livestock auction markets. Calves' abnormal physical signs (APS) were noted upon arrival at the auction market as they were examined by trained research staff. The haversine distance between the farm and the auction market was evaluated using geographic coordinates and categorized. Generalized linear mixed models were used for statistical analyses. The main APS observed were ocular discharge (34.9%), abnormal hide cleanliness (21.2%), swollen navel (17.2%), dehydration score 1 (at least one of the 2 following clinical signs: persistent skin tent or sunken eye, 12.9%), and dehydration score 2 (both clinical signs mentioned above, 6.5%). Calves from farms located at greater distances from the auction markets (≥110 km) had a higher risk ratio [RR = 1.08; 95% confidence internal (CI) = 1.03, 1.13] for dehydration than those from lesser distances (0–25 km). During the summertime, a RR of 1.18 (95% CI = 1.15, 1.22) was observed for dehydration compared with wintertime. A 2-way interaction between estimated distance and season showed a higher prevalence of ocular discharge for calves from farms at distances greater than or equal to 110 km during the summer (RR = 1.11; 95% CI: 1.04, 1.20) than for calves from farms located at lesser distances (0–25 km). These results demonstrate that calves from farms located at greater distances from the auction markets had more APS, mainly during the summer. A better understanding of the transport conditions and interaction with management at the farm of origin is determinant to mitigate the impact of the journey on surplus calf health. Recent wide spreads between boxed beef cutout values and fed cattle prices have reignited beef cattle producers' long‐held concerns about price discovery. The recent concerns have led to policy proposals meant to increase negotiated trade volumes in the cash market. We determine how volume, day of the week, sex, grade, weight range, and other factors impact price ranges in the negotiated cash market. We find many factors, in addition to sales volume, can impact price ranges. The analysis provides insight into current policy proposals, and we discuss the need for more detailed data for precise answers to current policy questions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To assess the occurrence of metiram, ziram, maneb and mancozeb residues in plants, processed commodities, rotational crops and livestock, EFSA considered the conclusions derived in the framework of Regulation (EU) No 1107/2009, the MRLs established by the Codex Alimentarius Commission (codex maximum residue limits; CXLs) as well as the European authorisations and the import tolerances reported by Member States and the UK (including the supporting residues data) for metiram and mancozeb. Propineb and thiram were not considered further in this assessment since it is expected that all uses for these compounds, including import tolerances, have been withdrawn after the lowering of all the MRLs to the limit of quantification (LOQ) following the EFSA MRLs reviews completed, respectively, in 2020 and 2021. When reviewing the MRLs for the common residue definition (determined and expressed as CS2), EFSA was requested to consider also the monitoring data from organic samples collected and made available by the EURLs, reflecting the sulfur naturally occurring in crops and not related to the uses of the dithiocarbamates. Based on the assessment of the available data, MRL proposals were derived, and a consumer risk assessment was carried out. Following a request from the European Commission, EFSA was asked to deliver a scientific opinion on the safety and efficacy of an essential oil obtained from the oleoresin of Pinus pinaster Aiton (pine white oil, also known as turpentine oil), when used as a sensory additive in feed and water for drinking for all animal species. The Panel on Additives and Products or Substances used in Animal Feed (FEEDAP) concluded that the essential oil under assessment is safe up to the maximum proposed use levels of 35 mg/kg for laying hens, piglets, pigs for fattening, sows, rabbits, salmonids, 50 mg/kg for veal calves (milk replacer), cattle for fattening, dairy cows, horses, dogs and ornamental fish, 20 mg/kg for cats. For the other species, the calculated safe concentrations in complete feed were 25 mg/kg complete feed for chickens for fattening, 33 mg/kg for turkeys for fattening and 14 mg/kg for ornamental birds. These conclusions were extrapolated to other physiologically related species. For any other species, the additive was considered safe at 20 mg/kg complete feed. No concerns for consumers were identified following the use of pine white oil up to the maximum proposed use levels in feed. The additive under assessment should be considered as irritant to skin and eyes, and as a skin and respiratory sensitiser. The use of pine white oil at the proposed use level in feed was not expected to pose a risk for the environment. Pine white oil was recognised to flavour food. The toxicological profile of zeta‐cypermethrin was also assessed. Based on the assessment of the available data, MRL proposals were derived, and a consumer risk assessment was carried out. Replacement brood cows are among the most significant investments for cow‐calf operations, thus crucial to profitability. Many cow‐calf producers find it cost effective to purchase replacements from a reliable replacement heifer seller, though by doing so they increase risk of reproductive inefficiency due to unknown characteristics of the heifers. When important information about a product is missing to buyers, a seller can build a reputation over time that acts as signal for quality. Previous work has explored reputation effects in feeder cattle markets, but to our knowledge we are the first to explore reputation effects in bred replacement cattle markets. Using data from an annual replacement heifer sale, we analyze the values of heifer characteristics and test for premiums from reputation development. After controlling for reproductive practices, breed, and other characteristics, we find reputation does not play the role that Shapiro theorized. In this sale, the lot order is strategically chosen and may indicate bred heifer quality to buyers, replacing the need for reputation as a signal. This study highlights the importance of quality signals and regional preferences in bred replacement cattle marketing and lays the empirical groundwork for future studies to test Shapiro's theory. We estimate the pricing efficiency of a livestock auction market using a two‐tier stochastic frontier model. This model captures pricing inefficiency of a hedonic pricing model for livestock via exponential error terms above and below the hedonic model specification. The direction of pricing inefficiencies, whether above or below the hedonic pricing model, represent surplus transfer from buyers to sellers or from sellers to buyers, respectively. Using data from a 7‐year period in a livestock auction market, we found that on average livestock buyers extract about 6% of surplus from sellers. That is, on average, livestock auction market underprices by about 6% below its full information price. Buyer concentration also affects the degree of surplus transfer. At low levels of buyer concentration, when the top four‐buyer market concentration is <30%, there is an overpricing of only 1.23% over the full information price, extracting surplus from buyers to sellers. Simultaneous spikes in global prices of many agricultural commodities in recent years have induced an interest in quantifying the degree of synchronisation of these movements. We suggest a conceptual framework explaining why temporally varying price synchronisation may happen and propose the concordance index for the empirical measurement of the incidence, symmetry and permanence of synchronisation. We establish that the index generates insights into time series dynamics which are complementary to those obtained from cointegration analysis. We illustrate the approach with an application for the co-movement in cyclical components of pig and cattle prices in three Latin American countries. Summary: Motivation: Spatial variation in crop and livestock production, combined with variation in market purchases and food transfers, lead to geographic differences in malnutrition that can inform food system policies. Purpose: This article quantifies nutrient production and consumption by sub‐region in Uganda, to identify the magnitude and location of gaps left by farm households' own production, market purchases, and food transfers relative to household nutrient requirements. Methods and approach: Using the fourth round of Uganda's National Panel Survey (2013/2014), we convert households' food production and consumption to nutrient equivalents, then identify the spatial pattern of nutrient inadequacy relative to requirements in each sub‐region. To inform policy, we identify the main food sources of five key micronutrients as well as their least‐cost alternatives to fill corresponding gaps. Findings: Sufficient calories and protein are generally available from farm production, purchases, and transfers, but alarming deficits can be seen in the supply of calcium, iron, and zinc as well as vitamins A and B12. Deficits are especially marked in the North East sub‐region. A variety of foods currently available in small quantities could be scaled up to fill these gaps. We find severe limitations in the available data, however, revealing the need for future work to cover all nutrient sources throughout the year with sufficient spatial and temporal precision to target interventions. Policy implications: The data analysed provide a suggestive but incomplete picture of how farm production, food markets, and transfers could be enhanced to meet nutrient requirements. Candidate foods for production and marketing to fill nutrient gaps include diverse vegetal crops, milk, and fish. Perishability, transport, and high production costs currently limit supply while low incomes limit demand, implying that a variety of food system interventions as well as social protection transfers are needed to fight hidden hunger in Uganda. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to understand the impact mechanism of grassland transfer on herders' production behaviour in pastoral areas. The impact of grassland transfer on herders' livestock production and grazing intensity is quantified. Design/methodology/approach: Using the survey data collected for 356 herder households from Inner Mongolia and Gansu, China, quantile regression is employed to assess the heterogeneous effects of grassland transfer on livestock production and grazing intensity. To correct the potential self-selection bias of grassland transfer, the propensity score matching technique is used. Findings: Results show that labour, percentage of livestock income and livestock stock are the main factors affecting herders' choice to transfer grassland. The positive effect of grassland transfer on livestock numbers on behalf of those who rented additional grassland is statistically significant but declines with livestock numbers. The sustainability-enhancing effect of grassland transfer on grazing intensity is significant, and the effect becomes larger amongst herder households with higher grazing intensity. The analysis on the impact mechanism shows that grassland transfer significantly promotes the adoption of sustainable grazing modes, such as rotational and seasonal rest grazing, which in turn increases herders' livestock numbers and decreases grazing intensity. Originality/value: Few studies have empirically analysed the influence of grassland transfer on livestock numbers and grazing intensity. This study fills this gap by employing a quantile regression to assess the heterogeneous effects of grassland transfer on livestock numbers and grazing intensity, while accounting for self-selection bias. We use a primary data set from a survey of medium and large firms and farms in the beef, citrus, and maize value chains in South Africa during March-June 2020, the early and late phases of the initial COVID-19 lockdowns. We have five main findings. (1) The initial lockdown regulations declared as "essential" the product (vertical) value chains but left as "inessential" the important "lateral" value chains delivering labour, materials, and logistics to the segments of the vertical value chains. This hurt the three vertical value chains as constraints in the laterals choked key segments of the verticals. (2) Vulnerability of the whole value chain emanated from vulnerability to shocks of critical "hotspot" linchpin segments (such as livestock auctions) or infrastructure (such as at ports). (3) Collective, industry-level "pivoting" was crucial both to organize the private sector response and to interact with government to course-correct on COVID-19 policies. (4) Responses to pre-COVID-19 challenges (such as drought and international phytosanitary rule changes) had prepared the beef and citrus value chain actors to respond collectively to the pandemic challenges. The feeder cattle futures contract has been criticized in recent years as not providing an effective hedging instrument. Following historically volatile cattle markets in 2014–2015, feeder cattle basis risk escalated, fueling futures contract concerns. This study assesses these concerns, utilizing weekly auction data from 32 feeder cattle markets from 1992 to 2021. Examined for the first known time, feeder cattle market variation had a statistically and economically significant influence on basis risk. Basis variation differed across regions and marketing periods. Feeder cattle basis risk was historically high in 2014–2015 but declined to levels similar to 2011 by 2018. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Data from 1,422 feeder cattle teleauction lots were used to assess the impacts on profitability of the Virginia quality assured (VQA) feeder cattle program. The analysis finds higher profits for VQA cattle due to their faster turnover and lower feed costs; however, certification does not have a significant effect on price received by producers. Hence, the consumer risk assessment is considered indicative only and, with the exception of the MRL proposal for kaki, all MRL proposals derived by EFSA still require further consideration by risk managers. Regarding triazole derivative metabolites (TDMs), separate indicative exposure assessments were performed and no risk to consumers was identified for what regards these metabolites individually. However, TDMs may be generated by several pesticides belonging to the group of triazole fungicides, and a comprehensive risk assessment has thus to be performed that covers all existing European uses for all pesticides belonging to the class of triazole fungicides. EFSA recommended to elaborate together with risk managers a strategy to ensure that the required data are made available to finalise the overall risk assessment for triazole fungicides. Purpose: Evaluate the sensitivity and economic viability of the feedlot system used for fattening cattle using reference a property located in the northern region of the state of São Paulo, Brazil. Methodology: We used a multidimensional approach to evaluate the sensitivity. The economic result was analyzed through cash flow, the net present value (NPV) being the viability indicator. The risks were incorporated with the Monte Carlo simulation for the prices of feed, purchase and sale of animals that were the discrete random variables, the value measure was the NPV, calculated with the minimum attractiveness rate of 7,55% per semester and the probabilities were estimated by relative frequency. Results: The probability of feedlot being an economically attractive activity was 30,2%, consequently the system was not viable in 69,8%. In the context of sensitivity, the feedlot was more vulnerable to fluctuations in the sale price, the 1% increase in the price fed cattle of generates on increased of 46% in NPV, being followed by feeder cattle price, the 1% increase in the feeder cattle price leads to a 29% reduced in NPV, and by the feeding price, the 1% increase in the feeding price leads to a 12% decreased in NPV. Contributions of the study: The results found in this research may support new evaluations in representative samples, incorporate the studies on this topic and assist decision makers. Background: Critical scholars agree that contemporary globalised and industrialised food systems are in profound and deepening crises; and that these systems are generative of accelerating multiple crises in the earth's life systems. Why and how did we arrive at this point? This paper argues that, conceiving each individual human as one cell in the greater human body, we are afflicted by what John McMurtry termed 'the cancer stage of capitalism.' This provocative framing is adopted here in response to growing calls by climate, earth and physical scientists not to 'mince words' in the description and analysis of humanity's current predicament, but rather 'tell it like it is.' Methods: Proceeding from McMurtry's application of the seven defining medical properties of a 'cancer invasion [of] an individual organism' to the broader body politic and the earth's life system, this paper draws on literature from diverse disciplines to investigate the fundamental cause of food systems crises. The paper references several empirical studies and meta-reviews that indicate the hastening decline in the integrity of human and ecological health, with a particular focus on the grain-oilseed-livestock complex and the accompanying social and ecological impacts on the southern cone countries of South America. Results: The cause of food system crises is to be found in the core logic of capital accumulation, the profit imperative, and the relentless and expanding processes of commodification and financialization. The key metric of 'economic growth' is problematised and discussed. An embryonic 'social immune response' is now observable, in the diverse practices of de- commodification, proposals for de-growth and commoning that together constitute an emerging 'food as a commons' movement. Conclusion: As currently framed, the Food as Commons proposal lacks coherence, rigour and a viable strategy to move beyond the current crisis. Its transformative potential can be strengthened through a more explicitly political grounding based on appeals to and support of anti- and post-capitalist movements and initiatives. A hedonic model was employed to examine factors impacting feeder cattle prices at a monthly video auction in Tennessee. Home-raised cattle were estimated to have a $2 per cwt. premium and cattle that have been tested for PI-BVDV (persistent infections with bovine viral diarrhea virus) sold for a premium of $1.19 per cwt. We also show how price varies across sale months for steers and heifers, suggesting opportune times to market gender-specific lots. Corn price was interacted with an average weight per head of the lot to show that lighter cattle were negatively affected, while heavier cattle prices were positively affected by increasing corn prices. Based on the assessment of the available data, MRL proposals were derived and a consumer risk assessment was carried out. Although no apparent risk to consumers was identified, some information required by the regulatory framework was missing.
