Crafting adversarial examples is crucial for evaluating and enhancing the robustness of Deep Neural Networks (DNNs), presenting a challenge equivalent to maximizing a non-differentiable 0-1 loss function. However, existing single objective methods, namely adversarial attacks focus on a surrogate loss function, do not fully harness the benefits of engaging multiple loss functions, as a result of insufficient understanding of their synergistic and conflicting nature. To overcome these limitations, we propose the Multi-Objective Set-based Attack (MOS Attack), a novel adversarial attack framework leveraging multiple loss functions and automatically uncovering their interrelations. The MOS Attack adopts a set-based multi-objective optimization strategy, enabling the incorporation of numerous loss functions without additional parameters. It also automatically mines synergistic patterns among various losses, facilitating the generation of potent adversarial attacks with fewer objectives. Extensive experiments have shown that our MOS Attack outperforms single-objective attacks. We introduce LLM4AD, a unified Python platform for algorithm design (AD) with large language models (LLMs). LLM4AD is a generic framework with modularized blocks for search methods, algorithm design tasks, and LLM interface. The platform integrates numerous key methods and supports a wide range of algorithm design tasks across various domains including optimization, machine learning, and scientific discovery. We have also designed a unified evaluation sandbox to ensure a secure and robust assessment of algorithms. Additionally, we have compiled a comprehensive suite of support resources, including tutorials, examples, a user manual, online resources, and a dedicated graphical user interface (GUI) to enhance the usage of LLM4AD. We believe this platform will serve as a valuable tool for fostering future development in the merging research direction of LLM-assisted algorithm design.

In this work, we provide a systematic analysis of how large language models (LLMs) contribute to solving planning problems. In particular, we examine how LLMs perform when they are used as problem solver, solution verifier, and heuristic guidance to improve intermediate solutions. Our analysis reveals that although it is difficult for LLMs to generate correct plans out-of-the-box, LLMs are much better at providing feedback signals to intermediate/incomplete solutions in the form of comparative heuristic functions. This evaluation framework provides insights into how future work may design better LLM-based tree-search algorithms to solve diverse planning and reasoning problems. We also propose a novel benchmark to evaluate LLM's ability to learn user preferences on the fly, which has wide applications in practical settings.

Cognitive Diagnosis (CD) aims to evaluate students' cognitive states based on their interaction data, enabling downstream applications such as exercise recommendation and personalized learning guidance. However, existing methods often struggle with accuracy drops in cross-domain cognitive diagnosis (CDCD), a practical yet challenging task. While some efforts have explored exercise-aspect CDCD, such as crosssubject scenarios, they fail to address the broader dual-aspect nature of CDCD, encompassing both student- and exerciseaspect variations. This diversity creates significant challenges in developing a scenario-agnostic framework. To address these gaps, we propose PromptCD, a simple yet effective framework that leverages soft prompt transfer for cognitive diagnosis. PromptCD is designed to adapt seamlessly across diverse CDCD scenarios, introducing PromptCD-S for student-aspect CDCD and PromptCD-E for exercise-aspect CDCD. Extensive experiments on real-world datasets demonstrate the robustness and effectiveness of PromptCD, consistently achieving superior performance across various CDCD scenarios. Our work offers a unified and generalizable approach to CDCD, advancing both theoretical and practical understanding in this critical domain. Vehicle Routing Problems (VRPs) are significant Combinatorial Optimization (CO) problems holding substantial practical importance. Recently, Neural Combinatorial Optimization (NCO), which involves training deep learning models on extensive data to learn vehicle routing heuristics, has emerged as a promising approach due to its efficiency and the reduced need for manual algorithm design. However, applying NCO across diverse real-world scenarios with various constraints necessitates cross-problem capabilities. Current NCO methods typically employ a unified model lacking a constraint-specific structure, thereby restricting their cross-problem performance. Current multi-task methods for VRPs typically employ a constraint-unaware model, limiting their cross-problem performance. Furthermore, they rely solely on global connectivity, which fails to focus on key nodes and leads to inefficient representation learning. This paper introduces a Constraint-Aware Dual-Attention Model (CaDA), designed to address these limitations. CaDA incorporates a constraint prompt that efficiently represents different problem variants. Additionally, it features a dual-attention mechanism with a global branch for capturing broader graph-wide information and a sparse branch that selectively focuses on the most relevant nodes. We comprehensively evaluate our model on 16 different VRPs and compare its performance against existing cross-problem VRP solvers. CaDA achieves state-of-the-art results across all the VRPs. Our ablation study further confirms that each component of CaDA contributes positively to its cross-problem learning performance.

We performed photometric and spectroscopic studies of three large amplitude contact binaries, NSVS 2418361, ATLAS J057.1170+31.2384 and NSVS 7377875. The amplitudes of three systems' light curves are more than 0.7 magnitude. We analyzed the light curves using Wilson-Devinney code to yield physical parameters. The photometric solutions suggested that NSVS 7377875 belongs to an A-subtype contact binary, while the others are classified as W-subtype ones. Furthermore, the mass ratio of NSVS 7377875 is higher than 0.72, so it belongs to H-subtype contact binaries. Since their light curves have unequal height at two maxima which is called O'Connell effect, a dark spot on the primary component for each target was required to get a better fit of light curves. The orbital period investigation shows that the period of NSVS 2418361 is increasing, indicating a mass transfer from the less massive component to the more massive one, while the other targets exhibit no long-term variation. Our spectral subtraction analysis of LAMOST spectra revealed excess emissions in the $H_\alpha$ line, indicating chromospheric activity in all the three targets. The Gaia distance was applied to estimate the absolute parameters of the three targets, and we obtained their evolutionary state. The relationships between the energy transfer parameter of 76 H-subtype contact binaries and their bolometric luminosity ratios, as well as their contact degree, were presented. Tokenization methods like Byte-Pair Encoding (BPE) enhance computational efficiency in large language models (LLMs) but often obscure internal character structures within tokens. This limitation hinders LLMs' ability to predict precise character positions, which is crucial in tasks like Chinese Spelling Correction (CSC) where identifying the positions of misspelled characters accelerates correction processes. We propose Token Internal Position Awareness (TIPA), a method that significantly improves models' ability to capture character positions within tokens by training them on reverse character prediction tasks using the tokenizer's vocabulary. Experiments demonstrate that TIPA enhances position prediction accuracy in LLMs, enabling more precise identification of target characters in original text. Furthermore, when applied to downstream tasks that do not require exact position prediction, TIPA still boosts performance in tasks needing character-level information, validating its versatility and effectiveness.

Countless decisions shape our daily lives, and it is paramount to understand the how and why behind these choices. In this paper, we introduce a new LLM decision-making framework called STRUX, which enhances LLM decision-making by providing structured explanations. These include favorable and adverse facts related to the decision, along with their respective strengths. STRUX begins by distilling lengthy information into a concise table of key facts. It then employs a series of self-reflection steps to determine which of these facts are pivotal, categorizing them as either favorable or adverse in relation to a specific decision. Lastly, we fine-tune an LLM to identify and prioritize these key facts to optimize decision-making. STRUX has been evaluated on the challenging task of forecasting stock investment decisions based on earnings call transcripts and demonstrated superior performance against strong baselines. Symbolic regression (SR) methods have been extensively investigated to explore explicit algebraic Reynolds stress models (EARSM) for turbulence closure of Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations. The deduced EARSM can be readily implemented in existing computational fluid dynamic (CFD) codes and promotes the identification of physically interpretable turbulence models. The existing SR methods, such as genetic programming, sparse regression, or artificial neural networks, require user-defined functional operators, a library of candidates, or complex optimization algorithms. In this work, a novel framework using LLMs to automatically discover algebraic expressions for correcting the RSM is proposed. The direct observation of Reynolds stress and the indirect output of the CFD simulation are both involved in the training process to guarantee data consistency and avoid numerical stiffness. Constraints of functional complexity and convergence are supplementally imposed in the objective function on account of the tremendous flexibility of LLMs. The evolutionary search is employed for global optimization. The proposed method is performed for separated flow over periodic hills at Re = 10,595. The generalizability of the discovered model is verified on a set of 2D turbulent separated flow configurations with different Reynolds numbers and geometries. It is demonstrated that the corrective RANS can improve the prediction for both the Reynolds stress and mean velocity fields. Compared with algebraic models discovered by other works, the discovered model performs better in accuracy and generalization capability. The proposed approach provides a promising paradigm for using LLMs to improve turbulence modeling for a given class of flows.

Graph Convolutional Networks (GCNs) are widely used in graph-based applications, such as social networks and recommendation systems. Nevertheless, large-scale graphs or deep aggregation layers in full-batch GCNs consume significant GPU memory, causing out of memory (OOM) errors on mainstream GPUs (e.g., 29GB memory consumption on the Ogbnproducts graph with 5 layers). The subgraph sampling methods reduce memory consumption to achieve lightweight GCNs by partitioning the graph into multiple subgraphs and sequentially training GCNs on each subgraph. However, these methods yield gaps among subgraphs, i.e., GCNs can only be trained based on subgraphs instead of global graph information, which reduces the accuracy of GCNs. In this paper, we propose PromptGCN, a novel prompt-based lightweight GCN model to bridge the gaps among subgraphs. First, the learnable prompt embeddings are designed to obtain global information. Then, the prompts are attached into each subgraph to transfer the global information among subgraphs. Extensive experimental results on seven largescale graphs demonstrate that PromptGCN exhibits superior performance compared to baselines. Notably, PromptGCN improves the accuracy of subgraph sampling methods by up to 5.48% on the Flickr dataset. Overall, PromptGCN can be easily combined with any subgraph sampling method to obtain a lightweight GCN model with higher accuracy.

Algorithm Design (AD) is crucial for effective problem-solving across various domains. The advent of Large Language Models (LLMs) has notably enhanced the automation and innovation within this field, offering new perspectives and promising solutions. Over the past three years, the integration of LLMs into AD (LLM4AD) has seen substantial progress, with applications spanning optimization, machine learning, mathematical reasoning, and scientific discovery. Given the rapid advancements and expanding scope of this field, a systematic review is both timely and necessary. This paper provides a systematic review of LLM4AD. First, we offer an overview and summary of existing studies. Then, we introduce a taxonomy and review the literature across four dimensions: the roles of LLMs, search methods, prompt methods, and application domains with a discussion of potential and achievements of LLMs in AD. Finally, we identify current challenges and highlight several promising directions for future research.

This paper proposes a novel Stage-wise and Prior-aware Neural Speech Phase Prediction (SP-NSPP) model, which predicts the phase spectrum from input amplitude spectrum by two-stage neural networks. In the initial prior-construction stage, we preliminarily predict a rough prior phase spectrum from the amplitude spectrum. The subsequent refinement stage transforms the amplitude spectrum into a refined high-quality phase spectrum conditioned on the prior phase. Networks in both stages use ConvNeXt v2 blocks as the backbone and adopt adversarial training by innovatively introducing a phase spectrum discriminator (PSD). To further improve the continuity of the refined phase, we also incorporate a time-frequency integrated difference (TFID) loss in the refinement stage. Experimental results confirm that, compared to neural network-based no-prior phase prediction methods, the proposed SP-NSPP achieves higher phase prediction accuracy, thanks to introducing the coarse phase priors and diverse training criteria. LLMs are ideal for decision-making due to their ability to reason over long contexts and identify critical factors. However, challenges arise when processing transcripts of spoken speech describing complex scenarios. These transcripts often contain ungrammatical or incomplete sentences, repetitions, hedging, and vagueness. For example, during a company's earnings call, an executive might project a positive revenue outlook to reassure investors, despite significant uncertainty regarding future earnings. It is crucial for LLMs to incorporate this uncertainty systematically when making decisions. In this paper, we introduce DeFine, a new framework that constructs probabilistic factor profiles from complex scenarios. DeFine then integrates these profiles with analogical reasoning, leveraging insights from similar past experiences to guide LLMs in making critical decisions in novel situations. Our framework separates the tasks of quantifying uncertainty in complex scenarios and incorporating it into LLM decision-making. This approach is particularly useful in fields such as medical consultations, negotiations, and political debates, where making decisions under uncertainty is vital.

Text-to-image generation requires large amount of training data to synthesizing high-quality images. For augmenting training data, previous methods rely on data interpolations like cropping, flipping, and mixing up, which fail to introduce new information and yield only marginal improvements. In this paper, we propose a new data augmentation method for text-to-image generation using linear extrapolation. Specifically, we apply linear extrapolation only on text feature, and new image data are retrieved from the internet by search engines. For the reliability of new text-image pairs, we design two outlier detectors to purify retrieved images. Based on extrapolation, we construct training samples dozens of times larger than the original dataset, resulting in a significant improvement in text-to-image performance. Moreover, we propose a NULL-guidance to refine score estimation, and apply recurrent affine transformation to fuse text information. Our model achieves FID scores of 7.91, 9.52 and 5.00 on the CUB, Oxford and COCO datasets. The code and data will be available on GitHub (https://github.com/senmaoy/RAT-Diffusion).

Heuristics are commonly used to tackle diverse search and optimization problems. Design heuristics usually require tedious manual crafting with domain knowledge. Recent works have incorporated large language models (LLMs) into automatic heuristic search leveraging their powerful language and coding capacity. However, existing research focuses on the optimal performance on the target problem as the sole objective, neglecting other criteria such as efficiency and scalability, which are vital in practice. To tackle this challenge, we propose to model heuristic search as a multi-objective optimization problem and consider introducing other practical criteria beyond optimal performance. Due to the complexity of the search space, conventional multi-objective optimization methods struggle to effectively handle multi-objective heuristic search. We propose the first LLM-based multi-objective heuristic search framework, Multi-objective Evolution of Heuristic (MEoH), which integrates LLMs in a zero-shot manner to generate a non-dominated set of heuristics to meet multiple design criteria. We design a new dominance-dissimilarity mechanism for effective population management and selection, which incorporates both code dissimilarity in the search space and dominance in the objective space. MEoH is demonstrated in two well-known combinatorial optimization problems: the online Bin Packing Problem (BPP) and the Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP). Results indicate that a variety of elite heuristics are automatically generated in a single run, offering more trade-off options than existing methods. It successfully achieves competitive or superior performance while improving efficiency up to 10 times. Moreover, we also observe that the multi-objective search introduces novel insights into heuristic design and leads to the discovery of diverse heuristics.

Surgical automation has the capability to improve the consistency of patient outcomes and broaden access to advanced surgical care in underprivileged communities. Shared autonomy, where the robot automates routine subtasks while the surgeon retains partial teleoperative control, offers great potential to make an impact. In this paper we focus on one important skill within surgical shared autonomy: Automating robotic assistance to maximize visual exposure and apply tissue tension for dissection and cautery. Ensuring consistent exposure to visualize the surgical site is crucial for both efficiency and patient safety. However, achieving this is highly challenging due to the complexities of manipulating deformable volumetric tissues that are prevalent in surgery.To address these challenges we propose \methodname, a framework for autonomous surgical robotic assistance to \methodfullname. We integrate a differentiable physics model with perceptual feedback to achieve our two key objectives: 1) Maximizing tissue exposure and applying tension for a specified dissection site through visual-servoing conrol and 2) Selecting optimal control positions for a dissection target based on deformable Jacobian analysis. Chronic wounds, including diabetic ulcers, pressure ulcers, and ulcers secondary to venous hypertension, affects more than 6.5 million patients and a yearly cost of more than $25 billion in the United States alone. Chronic wound treatment is currently a manual process, and we envision a future where robotics and automation will aid in this treatment to reduce cost and improve patient care. In this work, we present the development of the first robotic system for wound dressing removal which is reported to be the worst aspect of living with chronic wounds. Our method leverages differentiable physics-based simulation to perform gradient-based Model Predictive Control (MPC) for optimized trajectory planning. By integrating fracture mechanics of adhesion, we are able to model the peeling effect inherent to dressing adhesion. The system is further guided by carefully designed objective functions that promote both efficient and safe control, reducing the risk of tissue damage. We validated the efficacy of our approach through a series of experiments conducted on both synthetic skin phantoms and real human subjects. Learning user preferences from implicit feedback is one of the core challenges in recommendation. The difficulty lies in the potential noise within implicit feedback. Therefore, various denoising recommendation methods have been proposed recently. However, most of them overly rely on the hyperparameter configurations, inevitably leading to inadequacies in model adaptability and generalization performance. In this study, we propose a novel Adaptive Ensemble Learning (AEL) for denoising recommendation, which employs a sparse gating network as a brain, selecting suitable experts to synthesize appropriate denoising capacities for different data samples. To address the ensemble learning shortcoming of model complexity and ensure sub-recommender diversity, we also proposed a novel method that stacks components to create sub-recommenders instead of directly constructing them. Extensive experiments across various datasets demonstrate that AEL outperforms others in kinds of popular metrics, even in the presence of substantial and dynamic noise. Three types of cycles are identified in the quantum jump trajectories of the Scovil--Schulz-DuBois (SSDB) machine: an R-cycle as refrigeration, an H-cycle as a heat engine, and an N-cycle in which the machine is neutral. The statistics of these cycles are investigated via a semi-Markov process method. We find that in the large time limit, whether the machine operates as a heat engine or refrigerator depends on the ratio between the numbers of R-cycles and H-cycles per unit time. Further increasing the hot bath temperature above a certain threshold does not increase the machine's power output. The cause is that, in this situation, the N-cycle has a greater probability than the H-cycle and R-cycle. Although the SSDB machine operates by randomly switching between these three cycles, at the level of a single quantum jump trajectory, its heat engine efficiency and the refrigerator's coefficient of performance remain constant., Comment: 3 figures

Effective planning is essential for the success of any task, from organizing a vacation to routing autonomous vehicles and developing corporate strategies. It involves setting goals, formulating plans, and allocating resources to achieve them. LLMs are particularly well-suited for automated planning due to their strong capabilities in commonsense reasoning. They can deduce a sequence of actions needed to achieve a goal from a given state and identify an effective course of action. However, it is frequently observed that plans generated through direct prompting often fail upon execution. Our survey aims to highlight the existing challenges in planning with language models, focusing on key areas such as embodied environments, optimal scheduling, competitive and cooperative games, task decomposition, reasoning, and planning. Through this study, we explore how LLMs transform AI planning and provide unique insights into the future of LM-assisted planning.

Automating suturing during robotically-assisted surgery reduces the burden on the operating surgeon, enabling them to focus on making higher-level decisions rather than fatiguing themselves in the numerous intricacies of a surgical procedure. Accurate suture thread reconstruction and grasping are vital prerequisites for suturing, particularly for avoiding entanglement with surgical tools and performing complex thread manipulation. However, such methods must be robust to heavy perceptual degradation resulting from heavy noise and thread feature sparsity from endoscopic images. We develop a reconstruction algorithm that utilizes quadratic programming optimization to fit smooth splines to thread observations, satisfying reliability bounds estimated from measured observation noise. Additionally, we craft a grasping policy that generates gripper trajectories that maximize the probability of a successful grasp. Our full image-to-grasp pipeline is rigorously evaluated with over 400 grasping trials, exhibiting state-of-the-art accuracy. With the growing demand for offline PDF chatbots in automotive industrial production environments, optimizing the deployment of large language models (LLMs) in local, low-performance settings has become increasingly important. This study focuses on enhancing Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) techniques for processing complex automotive industry documents using locally deployed Ollama models. Based on the Langchain framework, we propose a multi-dimensional optimization approach for Ollama's local RAG implementation. Our method addresses key challenges in automotive document processing, including multi-column layouts and technical specifications. We introduce improvements in PDF processing, retrieval mechanisms, and context compression, tailored to the unique characteristics of automotive industry documents. Additionally, we design custom classes supporting embedding pipelines and an agent supporting self-RAG based on LangGraph best practices. To evaluate our approach, we constructed a proprietary dataset comprising typical automotive industry documents, including technical reports and corporate regulations. We compared our optimized RAG model and self-RAG agent against a naive RAG baseline across three datasets: our automotive industry dataset, QReCC, and CoQA. Results demonstrate significant improvements in context precision, context recall, answer relevancy, and faithfulness, with particularly notable performance on the automotive industry dataset. Our optimization scheme provides an effective solution for deploying local RAG systems in the automotive sector, addressing the specific needs of PDF chatbots in industrial production environments. This research has important implications for advancing information processing and intelligent production in the automotive industry.

Materials with electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding in the terahertz (THz) regime, while minimizing the quantity used, are highly demanded for future information communication, healthcare and mineral resource exploration applications. Currently, there is often a trade-off between the amount of material used and the absolute EMI shielding effectiveness (EESt) for the EMI shielding materials. Here, we address this trade-off by harnessing the unique properties of two-dimensional (2D) beta12-borophene (beta12-Br) nanosheets. Leveraging beta12-Br's light weight and exceptional electron mobility characteristics, which represent among the highest reported values to date, we simultaneously achieve a THz EMI shield effectiveness (SE) of 70 dB and an EESt of 4.8E5 dB cm^2/g (@0.87 THz) using a beta12-Br polymer composite. This surpasses the values of previously reported THz shielding materials with an EESt less than 3E5 dB cm^2/g and a SE smaller than 60 dB, while only needs 0.1 wt.% of these materials to realize the same SE value. Furthermore, by capitalizing on the composite's superior mechanical properties, with 158% tensile strain at a Young's modulus of 33 MPa, we demonstrate the high-efficiency shielding performances of conformably coated surfaces based on beta12-Br nanosheets, suggesting their great potential in EMI shielding area.

Automated heuristic design (AHD) has gained considerable attention for its potential to automate the development of effective heuristics. The recent advent of large language models (LLMs) has paved a new avenue for AHD, with initial efforts focusing on framing AHD as an evolutionary program search (EPS) problem. However, inconsistent benchmark settings, inadequate baselines, and a lack of detailed component analysis have left the necessity of integrating LLMs with search strategies and the true progress achieved by existing LLM-based EPS methods to be inadequately justified. This work seeks to fulfill these research queries by conducting a large-scale benchmark comprising four LLM-based EPS methods and four AHD problems across nine LLMs and five independent runs. Our extensive experiments yield meaningful insights, providing empirical grounding for the importance of evolutionary search in LLM-based AHD approaches, while also contributing to the advancement of future EPS algorithmic development. In a specific class of open quantum systems with finite and fixed numbers of collapsed quantum states, the semi-Markov process method is used to calculate the large deviations of the first passage time statistics. The core formula is an equation of poles, which is also applied in determining the scaled generating functions (SCGFs) of the counting statistics. For simple counting variables, the SCGFs of the first passage time statistics are derived by finding the largest modulus of the roots of this equation with respect to the $z$-transform parameter and then calculating its logarithm. The procedure is analogous to that of solving for the SCGFs of the counting statistics. However, for current-like variables, the method generally fails unless the equation of pole is simplified to a quadratic form. The fundamental reason for this lies in the nonuniqueness between the roots and the region of convergence for the joint transform. We illustrate these results via a resonantly driven two-level quantum system, where for several counting variables the solutions to the SCGFs of the first passage time are analytically obtained. In this paper, we clarify the strong relationship between Myrberg type dynamics and the ergodic properties of the geodesic flows on (not necessarily compact) uniform visibility manifolds without conjugate points. We prove that the positivity of the Patterson-Sullivan measure of the Myrberg limit set is equivalent to the conservativity of the geodesic flow with respect to the Bowen-Margulis-Sullivan measure. Moreover we show that the Myrberg limit set is a full Patterson-Sullivan measure subset of the conical limit set. These results extend the classical works of P. Tukia and B. Stratmann from hyperbolic manifolds to the manifolds without conjugate points.

This work is motivated by two key trends. On one hand, large language models (LLMs) have shown remarkable versatility in various generative tasks such as writing, drawing, and question answering, significantly reducing the time required for many routine tasks. On the other hand, researchers, whose work is not only time-consuming but also highly expertise-demanding, face increasing challenges as they have to spend more time reading, writing, and reviewing papers. This raises the question: how can LLMs potentially assist researchers in alleviating their heavy workload? This study focuses on the topic of LLMs assist NLP Researchers, particularly examining the effectiveness of LLM in assisting paper (meta-)reviewing and its recognizability. To address this, we constructed the ReviewCritique dataset, which includes two types of information: (i) NLP papers (initial submissions rather than camera-ready) with both human-written and LLM-generated reviews, and (ii) each review comes with "deficiency" labels and corresponding explanations for individual segments, annotated by experts. Using ReviewCritique, this study explores two threads of research questions: (i) "LLMs as Reviewers", how do reviews generated by LLMs compare with those written by humans in terms of quality and distinguishability? (ii) "LLMs as Metareviewers", how effectively can LLMs identify potential issues, such as Deficient or unprofessional review segments, within individual paper reviews? Reasoning is most powerful when an LLM accurately aggregates relevant information. We examine the critical role of information aggregation in reasoning by requiring the LLM to analyze sports narratives. To succeed at this task, an LLM must infer points from actions, identify related entities, attribute points accurately to players and teams, and compile key statistics to draw conclusions. We conduct comprehensive experiments with real NBA basketball data and present SportsGen, a new method to synthesize game narratives. By synthesizing data, we can rigorously evaluate LLMs' reasoning capabilities under complex scenarios with varying narrative lengths and density of information. Our findings show that most models, including GPT-4o, often fail to accurately aggregate basketball scores due to frequent scoring patterns. Open-source models like Llama-3 further suffer from significant score hallucinations. Large Language Models (LLMs) are constrained by outdated information and a tendency to generate incorrect data, commonly referred to as "hallucinations." Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) addresses these limitations by combining the strengths of retrieval-based methods and generative models. This approach involves retrieving relevant information from a large, up-to-date dataset and using it to enhance the generation process, leading to more accurate and contextually appropriate responses. Despite its benefits, RAG introduces a new attack surface for LLMs, particularly because RAG databases are often sourced from public data, such as the web. In this paper, we propose \TrojRAG{} to identify the vulnerabilities and attacks on retrieval parts (RAG database) and their indirect attacks on generative parts (LLMs). Specifically, we identify that poisoning several customized content passages could achieve a retrieval backdoor, where the retrieval works well for clean queries but always returns customized poisoned adversarial queries. Triggers and poisoned passages can be highly customized to implement various attacks. For example, a trigger could be a semantic group like "The Republican Party, Donald Trump, etc." Adversarial passages can be tailored to different contents, not only linked to the triggers but also used to indirectly attack generative LLMs without modifying them. These attacks can include denial-of-service attacks on RAG and semantic steering attacks on LLM generations conditioned by the triggers. Our experiments demonstrate that by just poisoning 10 adversarial passages can induce 98.2\% success rate to retrieve the adversarial passages. Then, these passages can increase the reject ratio of RAG-based GPT-4 from 0.01\% to 74.6\% or increase the rate of negative responses from 0.22\% to 72\% for targeted queries.

Multi-objective optimization can be found in many real-world applications where some conflicting objectives can not be optimized by a single solution. Existing optimization methods often focus on finding a set of Pareto solutions with different optimal trade-offs among the objectives. However, the required number of solutions to well approximate the whole Pareto optimal set could be exponentially large with respect to the number of objectives, which makes these methods unsuitable for handling many optimization objectives. In this work, instead of finding a dense set of Pareto solutions, we propose a novel Tchebycheff set scalarization method to find a few representative solutions (e.g., 5) to cover a large number of objectives (e.g., $>100$) in a collaborative and complementary manner. In this way, each objective can be well addressed by at least one solution in the small solution set. In addition, we further develop a smooth Tchebycheff set scalarization approach for efficient optimization with good theoretical guarantees. Experimental studies on different problems with many optimization objectives demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed method.

In the domain of Document AI, parsing semi-structured image form is a crucial Key Information Extraction (KIE) task. The advent of pre-trained multimodal models significantly empowers Document AI frameworks to extract key information from form documents in different formats such as PDF, Word, and images. Nonetheless, form parsing is still encumbered by notable challenges like subpar capabilities in multilingual parsing and diminished recall in industrial contexts in rich text and rich visuals. In this work, we introduce a simple but effective \textbf{M}ultimodal and \textbf{M}ultilingual semi-structured \textbf{FORM} \textbf{PARSER} (\textbf{XFormParser}), which anchored on a comprehensive Transformer-based pre-trained language model and innovatively amalgamates semantic entity recognition (SER) and relation extraction (RE) into a unified framework. Combined with Bi-LSTM, the performance of multilingual parsing is significantly improved. Furthermore, we develop InDFormSFT, a pioneering supervised fine-tuning (SFT) industrial dataset that specifically addresses the parsing needs of forms in various industrial contexts. XFormParser has demonstrated its unparalleled effectiveness and robustness through rigorous testing on established benchmarks. Compared to existing state-of-the-art (SOTA) models, XFormParser notably achieves up to 1.79\% F1 score improvement on RE tasks in language-specific settings. It also exhibits exceptional cross-task performance improvements in multilingual and zero-shot settings. Neural combinatorial optimization (NCO) is a promising learning-based approach to solving various vehicle routing problems without much manual algorithm design. However, the current NCO methods mainly focus on the in-distribution performance, while the real-world problem instances usually come from different distributions. A costly fine-tuning approach or generalized model retraining from scratch could be needed to tackle the out-of-distribution instances. Unlike the existing methods, this work investigates an efficient prompt learning approach in NCO for cross-distribution adaptation. To be concrete, we propose a novel prompt learning method to facilitate fast zero-shot adaptation of a pre-trained model to solve routing problem instances from different distributions. The proposed model learns a set of prompts among various distributions and then selects the best-matched one to prompt a pre-trained attention model for each problem instance. Extensive experiments show that the proposed prompt learning approach facilitates the fast adaptation of pre-trained routing models. It also outperforms existing generalized models on both in-distribution prediction and zero-shot generalization to a diverse set of new tasks. Surgical automation can improve the accessibility and consistency of life saving procedures. Most surgeries require separating layers of tissue to access the surgical site, and suturing to reattach incisions. These tasks involve deformable manipulation to safely identify and alter tissue attachment (boundary) topology. Due to poor visual acuity and frequent occlusions, surgeons tend to carefully manipulate the tissue in ways that enable inference of the tissue's attachment points without causing unsafe tearing. In a similar fashion, we propose JIGGLE, a framework for estimation and interactive sensing of unknown boundary parameters in deformable surgical environments. This framework has two key components: (1) a probabilistic estimation to identify the current attachment points, achieved by integrating a differentiable soft-body simulator with an extended Kalman filter (EKF), and (2) an optimization-based active control pipeline that generates actions to maximize information gain of the tissue attachments, while simultaneously minimizing safety costs. The robustness of our estimation approach is demonstrated through experiments with real animal tissue, where we infer sutured attachment points using stereo endoscope observations.
