Between the 1580s to 1640s, proponents for eastward trade expansion to China, such as Richard Hakluyt and Sir Robert Cecil, created contactless “encounters” between early modern England and Ming China through Chinese objects. Such “contact” zones produce a rich site for exploring early modern English racial thinking and race-making. However, in early modern critical race studies, China remains an unstudied area—China seems invisible. To fill this gap, “Porcelain Bodies: Objects of Race in Early Modern England’s China” examines early modern racial thinking and race-making objects through the absent-present white Other, China. I show how England constructed both its whiteness and white supremacy through an imagined “China” and Chinese objects, both material and immaterial. In England’s self-white-making through “China,” England formulates a sophisticated race-making methodology: a racially fluid “China” with racial affordances that could move along the spectrum of a black and white binary, though never embody either limit of whiteness or blackness. By imbuing China with varying degrees of whiteness through material and immaterial manifestations, England constructs a complex racializing object, an exploitable technology to co-construct and reinforce a racialized black/white binary. This case study limits its historical scope by using the earliest and latest publications of its primary sources. I draw on travel writing, masques, poetry, and prose, by such writers as Richard Hakluyt, Ben Jonson, and Francis Bacon. This dissertation explores English racial ideologies through an “invisible” white Chinese constituted in the early modern English imaginary. Patterns of racial thinking and racialization emerge as part of the material texts related to the representation of China and East Asia. This report documents the geomorphic assessment component of the Mississippi River Hydrodynamic and Delta Management Feasibility Study. The overall objectives of the geomorphic assessment were to utilize all available data to document the historical trends in hydrology, sedimentation, and channel geometry in the lower Mississippi River and to summarize the local changes observed at locations where repetitive datasets exist and at key reaches determined during the study. The assessment focused on, but was not limited to, the river reach downstream of the Old River Control Complex and the time period from 1960 to the present (2013). The geomorphic assessment tasks included data compilation, geometric data analysis, gage and discharge analysis, dredge record analysis, sediment data analysis, development of an events timeline, and integration of results. Geomorphic reaches were defined, and the morphologic trends during different time periods were evaluated. The geomorphic assessment highlighted the importance of considering spatial and temporal variability when assessing morphological trends. Morphological trends on the Lower Mississippi River typically occur over decadal timescales. Consequently, there is considerable uncertainty with assessments that only cover short time periods. Therefore, investigators must be cautious when assuming that short term recent trends will predict future conditions., The original document contains color images.

The Kankakee River extends from South Bend, Indiana, to its confluence with the Illinois River near Wilmington, Illinois. The river has a 5,165- square-mile drainage area and a length of approximately 150 miles, reduced from approximately 250 miles, historically. The process of channelizing streams and draining the landscape has had impacts on the hydrology, hydraulics, sedimentation, and ecology of the watershed and channel network. Increased sediment loads associated with channelization and changed land use are a particular concern. A Section 519 Illinois River Basin Ecosystem Restoration Study is underway by the Sponsor to address these concerns, and the Kankakee River investigation reported herein was conducted in support of the restoration study. Sediment data were compiled from multiple sources and analyzed to determine average annual values of sub-basin sediment loads within the Kankakee River watershed. The Sediment Impact Analysis Methods (SIAM) model was used for rapid screening of alternatives for sediment management on a watershed scale. Sediment continuity was determined for base level conditions; then, a matrix of management strategies for various sub-basins of the watershed was evaluated to determine the relative impact of each strategy on the system sediment balance. Results are useful for planners and sediment managers interested in creating an overall sediment management plan that meets the sediment reduction goals of the restoration project., The original document contains color images.

This bibliography of more than 700 titles is intended as a useful reference for identification of New World trees and also indirectly indicates where future studies would be helpful. It was prepared for the Golden Anniversary Symposium of the Institute of Tropical Forestry, Forest Service, United States Department of Agriculture, at San Juan, Puerto Rico, on May 24-26, 1989. During the past half century, much progress has been made in identifying New World trees, notably by scientists working at the Institute.

This thesis asserts that it is critical for the U.S. to re-evaluate its foreign policy towards Vietnam and to begin viewing that country's strategic potential for meeting future threats to Southeast Asia: specifically the Chinese military threat, a threat based on China's territorial claims in the South China Sea and an aggressive program of modernization of China's military; and the Japanese economic threat, a threat reinforced by Japan's use of conditional aid, financial control of major industries throughout the region, and a structural dependency on imports of critical raw materials, primarily from Southeast Asia. America's relations with Vietnam have remained virtually unchanged since U.S. forces were withdrawn in April, 1975. However, the end of the Cold War and the collapse of the Soviet Union have released the U.S. from its need to view Vietnam as an extension of Moscow's influence in Southeast Asia. A policy of constructive engagement with Vietnam permits the U.S. to maintain the balance of power in Southeast Asia against encroaching Chinese and Japanese threats. America's economic interests in Asia, now one-third larger than in Europe, also create an imperative for change and the potential of Vietnam, in resources, manpower, and strategic location, should be made a factor in future policy formation.
