In public libraries, especially those in rural settings, it is important that every dime of library funding is leveraged effectively into serving the community. As part of a year-long project beginning in January 2023, we are evaluating item-level cost-effectiveness for each circulating item housed at the public library in Lakeville, Indiana. Through the use of big(ish) data, some custom Python scripting, and machine learning algorithms we hope to answer: How much money is saved by library patrons through their use of the public library's physical collection? How much money is saved by the community through the operation of a public library based on the use of the circulating collection? And are there any non-obvious traits which make an item or title a more or less cost-effective circulating asset? E-books constitute a small percentage of the total loans at public libraries. To determine the factors affecting this poor adoption, we analyzed GaliciaLe, the digital platform of public libraries in Galicia (Spain). Results from a staff survey, as well as circulation and population statistics, show that the sociodemographic characteristics of the municipality served by the library, along with staff habits, expertise, and self-perception of digital reading and e-lending, influence e-book loans. Together with staff opinions, these are reliable indicators for determining circulation among library members. Assistive technology refers to devices or systems that enhance the ability of individuals with and without disabilities to function and undertake activities of daily living.The study, grounded in the Social Determinants of Health framework, employed multiple methods including both qualitative (interviews) and quantitative (questionnaire) methods, involving 19 participants comprising assistive technology professionals and users.Key findings from the study underscore the pivotal role of assistive technology loan libraries, which lend various assistive devices to individuals, enabling them to try these technologies before making a long-term commitment. However, challenges, such as a restricted variety of devices and extended waiting periods for access were highlighted. The research points to a need for improved training for both staff at the loan libraries and the users of the technology. Accurate prediction of borrowing volume of library books is conducive to the decision-making of the managers. This study briefly introduces the backpropagation neural network (BPNN) algorithm used to predict the borrowing volume of university libraries. The factor analysis method and genetic algorithm were employed to optimize the BPNN algorithm to improve its prediction performance. The book borrowing records of 2022 from Handan College Library were considered the subject of simulation experiments. The designed algorithm was compared with the extreme gradient boosting and traditional BPNN algorithms in the experiments. The results showed that average borrowing time, book lending ratio, book return ratio, and average grade of borrowers could be used as the input features of BPNN. The improved BPNN algorithm demonstrated faster convergence and a smaller error during training. The borrowing volume predicted by the improved BPNN algorithm closely matched the actual volume, and the increase in prediction time did not lead to a significant change in the prediction error. Objective: In Croatia, comparative analyses of the financial investments in libraries and their value for the community and society are rarely conducted. Foreign studies confirm that libraries fulfill many social functions and significantly contribute to the well-being of the environments in which they operate. This is reflected through educational, cultural, creative, and entertainment content, digital transformations, as well as the achievement of social cohesion and inclusion. Using the example of the Zagreb City Libraries, this paper will present various comparisons of concrete data showing the direct and indirect benefits of public libraries to the community. Approach/Methodology/Design: The research was conducted using the desk method. Existing, publicly available statistical data (at national and local levels), the institution's business data, and publicly available market data on service prices were used. The value of library services and the library in the community can be expressed in several ways. Depending on what is to be shown, the value can be expressed (a) from the perspective of the individual or the entire community, (b) taking into account all library services or just a selected service, (c) per individual activity or, if it is an activity that is regularly conducted, for all meetings held in a chosen period. Results: The research confirmed the multiple values of the library, especially in the financial aspect. It was shown that the market value of just a portion of the services provided annually by the Zagreb City Libraries exceeds the annual investments in the institution as a whole. Practical implication: Fulfilling public interest and presenting value through concrete figures is the strongest form of public advocacy for the library. Promoting the library has become an indispensable part of operations because only in this way can the importance of libraries be highlighted. Therefore, this paper aims to highlight how this approach to valuing libraries can serve in public relations at several levels, from breaking stereotypes about libraries merely as book lending places to enhancing the institution's reputation in the local community and among its stakeholders - users, collaborators, politicians, founders, funders, and others. The German Library Association (dbv) advocates for fair conditions in e-lending in order to give libraries the opportunity to borrow electronic books from the day of publication. Gamification has emerged as an engaging approach to motivate participation and enhance experiences in diverse contexts. This study aimed to identify potential applications of gamification for attracting audiences to public libraries. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews with gamification experts, using purposive and snowball sampling, with thematic analysis revealing 16 main themes and 56 sub-themes. Our results show the potential of gamification to increase reading rates, help organize interesting events/challenges, and improve interactivity, the book lending process, library appeals, program awareness, user experience, educational activities, brand loyalty, participatory/volunteer activities, patron guidance, book searching, resource returns, marketing, and scientific/economic outputs in public libraries. This study highlights the fundamental and influential role of gamification in advancing public libraries and improving services in libraries. The City Library and Museum was founded in Pančevo in 1924. It worked successfully until the Second World War, had stable financing, relatively professional staff and numerous readers. In the period between the two world wars, it was one of four active city libraries in Vojvodina and one of seven in the whole of Serbia. Based on the available literature and source documents, the author tried to shed some light on the prehistory of the City Library of Pančevo, to answer the question of why it was not possible to establish it earlier, to determine the earliest date when the first lending libraries could be founded, and to establish their connection with the City Library of Pančevo. The conclusion was that possibly the first reading rooms and libraries were formed at the beginning of the 19th century, at the earliest. Then, the Austrian Empire finally banished the Ottoman army from the Pančevo region and it was possible to start with the continuous economic, social and cultural development of the city. The author paid attention to the library of the German-Banat Frontier Regiment which was one of the biggest and best-organised libraries in the years immediately before dismantling the Military Frontier (Kraina) in 1872. On the eve of the dismantling of the Frontier, after various Serbian cassinas and reading rooms, the library of the Serbian Orthodox Church Municipality was founded. At Jean-Baptiste Lully's death in 1687, music from his stage works was already circulating within and outside France, and was used and praised by 'all connoisseurs' in Europe (according to Dutch music publisher Amédée Le Chevalier). This was at a point when many of Lully's works were still not printed and the Parisian music dealers had not yet started their business with his music. Surviving manuscript sources from the dissemination of Lully's music before his death are few and fragmentary and have sometimes survived at a geographical distance from Paris. This article investigates a handful of previously unconsidered music sources, copied or printed in France in the 1670s and early 1680s, which were acquired by various members of northern aristocratic families and have survived in Swedish libraries. Viewed as a whole, these seemingly disparate sources can throw light on the details of the early circulation of Lully's music, as well as on musical practices of the elites in late 17th-century Europe. The librarian's axiom which states that when the economy is failing, use of the public library increases, has existed since the late 19th century. Educator and library administrator Steven James is credited with naming this phenomenon as he attempted to extrapolate the relationship between library usage and economic conditions. James' 1985 research found no correlation between library use and economic using data from the sixties to the mid-seventies. However, the American Library Association's Library Research Center several years later found that material circulation had increased significantly in the late nineties, a time of noted economic strife, leaving the question of the impact of economic trends on library use unresolved. Numerous articles dealing with library usage, economic downturns, library funding, and patron needs seek to understand past trends while anticipating, and even predicting, trends of the modern public library. This axiom bears out anecdotally; yet it is technically unproven statistically. The defined period of the Great Recession provides an opportunity to address this belief by using existing public library usage statistics. For this article, statistics used will be two years before, during, and two years after the Great Recession (2006–2011). Taking the annual data from public libraries which is reported to the state library agencies and then compiled nationally by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) Public Library Service (PLS), Library Journal created the LJ Index of Public Library Service and Star library rating system. The LJ Index scores consist of the following four per capita service output statistics: library visits, circulation, program attendance, and public internet use. Specifically, library visits and circulation statistics are utilized to determine if, during this time of documented economic strife, library usage increased as per the librarian's axiom. The breaking and dispersal of Otto Ege's manuscripts have been the subject of focused scholarly inquiry for nearly three decades, with new discoveries and insights emerging with regularity as more scholars and collectors work to uncover previously unrecognized and unrecorded Ege manuscript fragments in an attempt to reconstruct their original codicological and historical contexts. But the historical records of Ege's biblioclasm are just as fragmentary as the manuscripts he broke, and much remains unknown about the business practices, partnerships, and processes that facilitated the distribution of his manuscripts' pages. Drawing upon a new cache of archival documentation discovered by the author, this article sheds new light on one of Ege's most important commercial partnerships, highlighting his decades-long enterprise with the Lima (OH) Public Library to market and sell fragments to their mutual financial benefit and for the first time revealing the full statistical and financial extent of the Ege-Lima partnership—and its lasting impact on the distribution of medieval manuscripts across North America (and beyond). In recent years, programmes and events have become one of the major services of public libraries. This study aimed to provide a comprehensive and detailed investigation of the types of programmes and events that occur in modern public libraries that provide new services, in addition to traditional services such as book lending. The Helsinki Central Library Oodi (Finland) was used as a case study and data posted on their webpage was collected for analysis. In Finland, as per the Library Act of 2017, public libraries are encouraged to hold programmes and events. Accordingly, various programmes and events are held at Oodi. A total of 1,330 events (excluding duplicates) took place between 13 August 2019 and 31 October 2020 and were coded using the open coding method and grouped into categories. Oodi provided users with many types of learning and experience opportunities through programmes and events, aiming to eliminate social disparities and ensure equality among citizens. Many programmes and events were held to provide citizens with a place for social interaction and dialogue, creating connections among them. The library's traditional resource, that is, its collection, was central to many programmes and events. Even during the COVID-19 pandemic, the library has been contributing to the community by holding programmes and events online. This study is the first to comprehensively elucidate the contents of programmes and events held in a modern public library, which is expected to contribute to the further dissemination and development of these types of programmes and events. Geographic Information System (GIS) technology can be employed by academic librarians to study interlibrary loan (ILL) lending patterns of circulating materials. The data collected and analyzed using GIS can apprise librarians about the efficacy of existing networks, assist them in making sound cost-saving choices, and inform collection development activities. In this article, the physical lending outputs at The University of Alabama are studied across five years to understand better and explore factors that impact lending activities within Alabama. The data retrieved elucidate stable patterns and highlight identifiable changes in usage that can inform subsequent lending network practices within the state. Samuel Krauss‘ library was looted by the National Socialists in Vienna in 1938. As rector of the Israelite Theological School in Vienna, Krauss was in academic exchange with the head of the Oriental Institute of the University of Vienna, Viktor Christian. Instead of helping Krauss, Christian commandeered part of the Krauss library for the SS Ahnenerbe as a “loan”. In 2014, the Nazi provenance research department at the Vienna University Library was able to restitute the holdings and received them on “permanent loan” from the heirs for safekeeping. The only known volume with surviving handwritten notes by Samuel Krauss was digitized for an exhibition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As the efficacy of low vision service provision is facilitated by clients' access to and proper use of low vision devices, the objective of this study was to evaluate an outpatient clinic-based low vision device lending library program and the functional and psychosocial impact that device use had upon clients. Twenty individuals borrowed portable video magnifiers during the study period. Line items from the Revised-Self-Report Assessment of Functional Visual Performance and the Reading Behavior Inventory were analyzed before and after device loan at two months. The Psychosocial Impact of Assistive Devices Scale-10 and a semi-structured interview were also completed at two months. Reported improvements in reading performance and satisfaction levels on the Reading Behavior Inventory were significant (p<.001). The Revised-Self-Report Assessment of Functional Visual Performance indicated improved independence in reading medications, bills and labels. Higher scores in happiness, independence, sense of control and adaptability on the Psychosocial Impact of Assistive Devices Scale-10 indicated device retention at two months. Qualitative themes included improved independence, time needed to acclimate to the device, personal appraisal impacting motivation and challenges specific to low vision. Sylvia Beach is known for her 'imperfect record keeping' and often indecipherable business accounts (Fitch, N. R. (1985). Sylvia Beach and the Lost Generation: A History of Literary Paris in the Twenties and Thirties. New York: Norton, p. 161). That said, data from her lending library cards and logbooks provide key insight into Shakespeare and Company's cash flow. While this financial information is not always presented in a systematic or exhaustive manner, it can still be used to develop a more nuanced understanding of the inner workings of Beach's literary enterprise. To that end, in this article, I use the Shakespeare and Company Project data sets to examine the exchange of books in Beach's bookshop. More specifically, my analysis centers on the details surrounding purchases and borrows of books from the events data set. By limiting the scope of my study to only those records that contain transactional data—whether in the form of membership fees or actual book purchases—I provide a case study of how to approach incomplete data that unearths a new array of networks that were central to the daily operations of Shakespeare and Company. As a result, in contrast with the common focus on solely the most notable lending library members (or members of the Lost Generation in general), this financial approach brings to light invisible networks and underexplored figures whose monetary contributions were essential to keeping Beach's business afloat. Computerization is critical to the success of today’s 21st century libraries. Studies have investigated some factors associated with automation of libraries in Nigeria. This study however, investigated computerization of academic libraries in Nigeria from the perspective of library personnel. The descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. Multi-Stage sampling method was used in this study. The instrument used for data collection was questionnaire titled: Computerization in Academic Libraries (CAL). The instrument was validated using construct and face validity. Cronbach’s test was used to determine the reliability of the main constructs, 162 copies of the questionnaire (92.7%) were returned and adjudged usable. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The findings on level of computerized services in academic libraries revealed that cataloguing and circulation have a high level of automated services; bindery and serial section has low level of computerized services. Further result on frequency of use of automated services revealed that library loan services and OPAC were daily use while internet and digital communication with colleagues and patron were occasionally used. However, result on the amount of acceptance of library personnel base on perceived usefulness revealed that information on library automated system are current and up to date. Also, perceived ease of use result revealed it's easy to recollect the way to perform task using library automated system. Result revealed that computerization helps to enhance efficiency on librarians work. KOHA and EBSCOHOST were the most available database while OPAC and e- journal were the foremost available electronic resources in academic libraries. Slow internet and funding among others were factors negating the implementation and use of computerization in libraries. Also, the findings revealed that there is a significant relationship between perceived usefulness and usage of computerized services at (r = .456, P<0.01) while there is no significant relationship of perceived usefulness and usage of computerized services at (r = .022, P> 0.01). - The study’s finding is not limited to the level of computerization in libraries but how it can be used to provide the needed information and services to the user’s and the library operations. Blended library services are reinforced by academic librarians to deal with the challenges that come from the changes caused by the pandemic. Transformation is reflected through information and communication technologies that are in constant development and available to users remotely. This study discusses the extent of usage and effectiveness of blended library services at the University of Baguio library by the students, faculty, non-teaching, and other library users. Blended library services covered online platforms, online resources, online circulation, online reference service, online information literacy (IL), and online want list form. This study used a descriptive research design to gather the information that will systematically describe the current status of the UB library online services. A survey questionnaire formatted in google form was employed to gather the needed information. The findings of the study reveal that the blended library services of the university have been utilized - much utilized by the users, specifically canvas LMS resources of online resources, online document delivery of online circulation and the library e-mail: library@e.ubaguio.edu of online reference service, other feature of blended library services have not been used to their full advantage. Furthermore, the blended library services are highly effective as assessed by the faculty, non-teaching staff, and other library users. Based on these findings, it is recommended that the Library strongly endorses additional databases and integration of these databases, library guides, and library services in the canvas LMS; regular posting of the blended services in the UB library social media account and platform for easier accessibility on the part library users; lastly, re-evaluate the way the development, manage and deliver marketing strategies of the blended services. There is no doubt that ICTs have altered the information management landscape globally. Although there have been recent improvements, the reality in underdeveloped countries like Nigeria has not been positive. The results of this study showed that librarians' use of ICTs for providing information services was significantly influenced by their attitude toward technology. When librarians have a good attitude, they are more likely to use the available ICTs efficiently. However, when they have a negative attitude, they may leave the available ICTs for information service delivery unused or misused. The extent to which librarians use ICTs can be greatly increased when attention is paid to elements that influence attitude formation, such as exposure to ICT, training, and peer influence. It therefore recommended that there should be library management software in circulation section of the library in order to reduce management pressure of the librarians at the time of circulation. This study is a citation analysis of serials in postgraduate Theses and dissertations of library and information science of public universities in Southeast Nigeria submitted from 2013 to 2021. The study was guide by five research questions in line with the objectives of the study. The study employed a descriptive survey design with a sampled population of 296 derived through census method from four public universities offering library and information science. The principle instruments used in collecting data for this study were self-designed checklists. With the checklists, 12455 serials citations were analyzed using descriptive statistics of mode, mean and range and data presented in tables, charts and graphs using frequencies and percentile. The study found that the most cited serials types were journals with 76.5% citations followed by conference proceedings/reports with 20% and the least cited being government publication with only .5 citations. This affirms other citation analysis, which found that journals are the most frequently used type. It was further discovered that serials used were either in print or electronic form. The study also revealed that multi authorship is the most frequently cited author pattern in library graduates theses and dissertations, while annual serials citations range from 1034 to 2205. The study indicated that the average age of serials used was 0 - 20. The study recommended among other things that there should be documentation librarian in each university library whose duty should be tracking down research reports, ensuring proper documentations and upward delivery to the university library circulation unit. This study assessed the awareness and implementation of circulation policies and practices at the Lagos Business School library. The study used a survey research design and data was collected using a questionnaire. Purposive sampling was used to select 150 respondents for inclusion in the study. The study showed that the majority of respondents were aware of the circulation policy at the Lagos Business School library. As indicated by 86.0% of respondents, library orientations for users were the most common form of awareness, followed by library website pages. The results further revealed that there is a high degree of implementation of circulation policies at the library. This is with 93% admitting they can borrow books and 70% knowing the LBS library loan periods. Favoritism by some library staff and an increasing number of late book returns as agreed by 71.0% were the major barriers to the implementation of the circulatory policy. This study has contributed to the existing body of knowledge by providing insight/data on circulation policies/practices in academic libraries. According to normative descriptions of Italian future-framed adverbial clauses, the future tense is the only option (Quando verrai [F], ti presterò il libro 'When you come, I'll lend you the book'). However, the present tense may also be used (Quando vieni [P], ti presto il libro). I demonstrate that choice and acceptance of the present in future-framed adverbials are conditioned by the speaker's presumption of settledness; that is, in every future world compatible with the speaker's beliefs the eventuality necessarily occurs. The data come from an online questionnaire consisting of a forced-choice and an acceptability judgment task completed by 429 native speakers of Italian, and were analyzed using mixed-effects regression. Results show that the present is chosen most and rated highest when the future eventuality is presumed settled ([+certain, +immediate, +temporally specific]). This paper explores an aspect of the legacy of the Declaration of Arbroath and expands upon earlier research into tensions surrounding the commemorations in 1814 of the battle of Bannockburn. It considers the evidence for connections between those radical artisans and their leaders who attempted to rouse popular insurrection in 1820, Scotland's so-called 'radical war', and Bruce's now-celebrated missive to the papacy of 6 April 1320, five centuries before. Did the armed workers moving on Carron Shore Iron Foundry on 5 April 1820, routed by troops at Bonnymuir, seek to coincide with the Declaration's anniversary? To what extent was the radicals' own declaration, the Address to the Inhabitants of Great Britain and Ireland, influenced by the text of 1320? If so, did this represent a continuation, a renewal or a debut for the Declaration as an inspiration for popular political participation in modern times? A survey of the holdings of early working-class subscription, circulation and public libraries in central Scotland c. 1790–c. 1830 can be made to identify both known and previously unnoticed published works which reproduced, translated and/or discussed the Declaration, as well as any radicalised readers. This reveals public awareness of Arbroath in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries to have been potentially far more widespread than hitherto recognised by historians, if still marginal as a catalyst to political agitation. The article presents the discussion on air quality sensor lending libraries. Topics include numerous epidemiological and outbreak investigations showing the adequate ventilation being one of the key health protective measures necessary to reduce the risk of SARS-CoV-2 transmission; and connection between poor ventilation and COVID-19 transmission also elevated the general importance of indoor air quality (IAQ).

Reading and analyzing data from sensors are crucial in many areas of life. IoT concepts and related issues are becoming more and more popular, but before we can process data and draw conclusions, we need to think about how to design an application. The most popular solutions today are microservices and monolithic architecture. In addition to this choice, there is also the question of the technology in which you will work. There are more and more of them on the market and in each of them it is practically possible to achieve similar results, but the difference lies in how quickly it will be possible and whether the approach invented will turn out to be the most optimal. Making the right decisions at the beginning of application development can determine its path to success or failure. The main goal of this article was to compare technologies used in applications based on microservice architecture. The preparation of a book lending system, whose server part was implemented in three different versions, each using a different type of technology, helped to achieve this goal. The compared solutions were: Spring Boot, Micronaut and Quarkus. The reason for this research was to investigate projects using sensor networks, ranging from telemedicine applications to extensive sensor networks collecting scientific data, or working in an environment with limited resources, e.g., with BLE or WIFI transmitters, where it is critical to supply energy to these transmitters. Therefore, the issue of efficiency and hence energy savings may be a key issue depending on the selected programming technology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
