Abstract

The dynamic response of carbonate sand-steel interface is of great significance to the safety and stability of the structure foundations which are constructed under reef geotechnical conditions. To investigate the effects of normal stress, cyclic amplitude and particle size on the interface shear stiffness and damping ratio, a series of cyclic shear tests on the interface between carbonate sand and steel was carried out based on the interface ring shear apparatus, and further compare these properties of carbonate sand with quartz sand. The results indicate that normal stress and cyclic amplitude have significant effects on the interface shear stiffness and damping ratio. Specifically, the promotion of normal stress level increases the shear stiffness and meanwhile decreases the damping ratio; the enhancement of cyclic amplitude leads to an approximate inverse reduction of shear stiffness and an approximate logarithmic increase of damping ratio; for carbonate sand with a uniform particle size, there is a critical particle size which results in a significantly different interface shear behavior. When the particle size of quartz sands is large, the shear stiffness and damping ratio are significantly different from those of carbonate sands. However, if the particle size is small, the shear stiffness and damping ratio of these two sands are almost consistent with each other.

17. Effects of triple semicircular canal plugging on hearing in patients with Meniere's disease: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Abstract

Introduction: Triple semicircular canal plugging is effective in controlling vertigo in patients with Meniere's disease, however, whether the rate of causing hearing loss during treatment is still not uniform. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of Triple semicircular canal plugging (TSCP) on hearing in Meniere's disease (MD) patients. Methods: Databases Reviewed were PubMed, EMBASE, Scopus, Clinical Trials, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, CNKI, Wanfang, and VIP. The study reported on the duration, follow-up time, hearing loss, and vertigo control outcomes in MD patients evaluated by TSCP. Stata 17 software was used for data analysis and assessing the risk of bias. Results: This meta-analysis included 367 MD patients from 7 studies. TSCP efficiently alleviated vertigo with a rate of 99% (95% CI: 0.97, 1.00) and had a hearing loss rate of 22% (95% CI: 0.16, 0.28). Subgroup analysis revealed that for hearing loss, the proportion of patients with disease duration more than or less than 12 months was 14% (95% CI: 0.05, 0.26) and 24% (95% CI: 0.19, 0.29), respectively. For vertigo control, the rates were 100% (95% CI: 0.96, 1.00) and 99% (95% CI: 0.97, 1.00), respectively. For hearing loss, the follow-up time of MD patients more than or less than 24 months was 20% (95% CI: 0.07, 0.38) and 23% (95% CI: 0.18, 0.29), respectively. For vertigo control, the rates were 99% (95% CI: 0.95, 1.00) and 99% (95% CI: 0.97, 1.00), respectively. The duration of the disease and follow-up time had no significant impact on hearing loss and vertigo control rates. Conclusions: TSCP was efficient for vertigo control but with a risk of hearing loss. It could be used as a surgical method for hearing preservation in advanced MD patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Isodesmic reactions, in which chemical bonds are redistributed between substrates and products, provide a general and powerful strategy for both biological and chemical synthesis. However, most isodesmic reactions involve either metathesis or functional‐group transfer. Here, we serendipitously discovered a novel isodesmic reaction of indoles and anilines that proceeds intramolecularly under weakly acidic conditions. In this process, the five‐membered ring of the indole motif is broken and a new indole motif is constructed on the aniline side, accompanied by the formation of a new aniline motif. Mechanistic studies revealed the pivotal role of σ→π* hyperconjugation on the nitrogen atom of the indole motif in driving this unusual isodesmic reaction. Furthermore, we successfully synthesized a diverse series of polycyclic indole derivatives; among quinolines, potential antitumor agents were identified using cellular and in vivo experiments, thereby demonstrating the synthetic utility of the developed methodology. Abstract

The phytochemical study on the stems and leaves of Morinda citrifolia L. resulted in the isolation of a new naturally occurring bisabolane-type sesquiterpenoid, morincitrinoid A (1), together with five known analogues (2–6). The chemical structure of 1 was elucidated by comprehensive spectral analyses. The known compounds 2–6 were identified by comparing their spectral data with those reported in the literature, which were isolated from M. citrifolia for the first time. In addition, the anti-inflammatory and anti-HIV activities of compounds 1–6 were evaluated in vitro. Compounds 1–6 displayed significant inhibitory activities on NO (nitric oxide) production induced by lipopolysaccharide in mouse macrophage RAW 264.7 cells with IC50 values ranging from 0.98 ± 0.07 to 6.32 ± 0.11 μM, which was comparable to hydrocortisone. Meanwhile, compounds 1–6 showed remarkable anti-HIV-1 reverse transcriptase (RT) effects with the EC50 values ranging from 0.16 to 6.29 μM.

Abstract

One new species, Placoneis modaomensis, found in a freshwater environment from a tributary of the Pearl River, which lies in Modaomen Channel, Zhuhai County, Guangdong Province, China, is described based on light and scanning electron microscope observations. P. modaomensis sp. nov. has the morphological features that are typical for the genus, including external terminal raphe fissures curved to the opposite sides and areolae with internal volate occlusions. The new species is similar to P. amphibola (Cleve) E.J. Cox, P. amphiboliformis (Metzeltin, Lange-Bertalot & Soninkhishig) Vishnyakov, P. parvapolonica Lange-Bertalot & Wojtal, P. clementispronina Lange-Bertalot & Wojtal and P. nanoclementis Lange-Bertalot & Wojtal in the shape of the valves and in having coarse striae but it can be easily distinguished by the two main morphological characteristics: external central raphe endings bent in the opposite directions, and areolae covered by volate occlusions externally. The latter feature appears to be new for taxa assigned to the genus Placoneis. Data on the associated diatom flora and its ecology are also given. These findings increase our understanding about the morphology of Placoneis in general and the distribution of the genus in China.
