Nonreciprocal superconductivity, also called as superconducting diode effect that spontaneously breaks time-reversal symmetry, is characterized by asymmetric critical currents under opposite applied current directions. This distinct state unveils a rich ore of intriguing physical properties, particularly in the realm of nanoscience application of superconductors. Towards the experimental realization of superconducting diode effect, the construction of two-dimensional heterostructures of magnets and $s$-wave superconductors is considered to be a promising pathway. In this study, we present our findings of superconducting diode effect manifested in the magnetic Mott insulator $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$. This phenomenon is induced by the proximity effect within a van der Waals heterostructure, consisting of thin $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$/NbSe$_2$ flakes. Through transport property measurements, we have confirmed a weak superconducting gap of 0.2 meV, which is significantly lower than the intrinsic gap of NbSe$_2$(1.2 meV). Upon the application of a weak magnetic field below 70 mT, we observed an asymmetry in the critical currents under positive and negative applied currents. This observation demonstrates a typical superconducting diode effect in the superconducting $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$. The superconducting diode effect and nonreciprocal resistance are observed exclusively when the magnetic field is aligned out-of-plane. This suggests that an Ising-type spin-orbit coupling in the superconducting $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$ may be responsible for the mechanism. Our findings furnish a platform for the exploration of superconducting diode effect via the artificial construction of heterostructures.

Motivated by very recent experimental observations of the 1/9 magnetization plateaus in YCu$_3$(OH)$_{6+x}$Br$_{3-x}$ and YCu$_3$(OD)$_{6+x}$Br$_{3-x}$, our study delves into the magnetic field-induced phase transitions in the nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on the kagome lattice using the variational Monte Carlo technique. We uncover a phase transition from a zero-field Dirac spin liquid to a field-induced magnetically disordered phase that exhibits the 1/9 magnetization plateau. Through a comprehensive analysis encompassing the magnetization distribution, spin correlations, chiral order parameter, topological entanglement entropy, ground-state degeneracy, Chern number and excitation spectrum, we pinpoint the phase associated with this magnetization plateau as a chiral $\mathbb{Z}_3$ topological quantum spin liquid and elucidate its diverse physical properties., Comment: Accepted by Phys. We investigate the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model with a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction on kagome lattice, making use of the variational Monte Carlo technique. An exotic quantum spin state is found to arise from a melting of the $\boldsymbol{Q} = 0$ long-range magnetic order by a topological transition, when a small anisotropic third nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic Heisenberg interaction is turned on. This novel state is a gapped quantum spin liquid, characterized by a topological order with ground-state degeneracy $n_g = 4$ and topological entanglement entropy $\gamma = \ln 2$, suggesting it is an Abelian topological phase. Furthermore, the Chern numbers of the spin-up (-down) spinon occupied bands of this state are $C_{\uparrow \downarrow} = \pm 1$, respectively. From this perspective, this state is also a time-reversal symmetric (total Chern number $C_{total} = 0$) topological insulator with spinons as the chiral edge states, which carry opposite spin and move in the opposite direction. It is analogous to the quantum spin Hall state but the spin current is carried by deconfined spinons in a quantum spin liquid, so is dubbed as the spinon quantum spin Hall state.

Twisted transition metal dichalcogenides are a new platform for realizing strongly correlated physics with high tunability. Recent transport experiments [A. Ghiotto et al. Nature 597, 345 (2021)] have reported the bandwidth-driven evolution of a Mott insulator to a strange metal behavior via the tuning of a displacement field in twisted $\mathrm{WSe_2}$ fixed at half filling. However, the nature of the correlated states and the related Mott physics involved in the whole process remain to be determined. Here, we unveil theoretically the evolution of the ground state of the half-filled $\mathrm{moir\acute{e}}$ Hubbard model as applied to $\mathrm{tWSe_2}$, transiting from a pseudogap state with Fermi arcs to a $120^\circ$ Ne$\acute{\mathrm{e}}$l ordered Mott insulator, then to another pseudogap state with Fermi pockets, and eventually to a Fermi liquid via a Lifshitz transition. The pseudogap phases are definitely identified by the vanishing of quasiparticle weights over parts of the Fermi surface, with the remaining parts forming disconnected Fermi arcs or pockets with well-defined quasiparticles. We demonstrate that the Fermi arc/pocket results from the electronic band structure reconstruction driven by electron correlations, marked by the coexistence of the poles and zeros of the single-particle Green's function. This work reveals the fundamental aspects of the Mottness in $\mathrm{moir\acute{e}}$ system and will stimulate the direct probes of the underling physice beyond transports via the angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures

In heavy-fermion systems with $f$ electrons, there is an intricate interplay between Kondo screening and magnetic correlations, which can give rise to various exotic phases. Recently, similar interplay appears to also occur in $d$-electron systems, but the underlying mechanism remains elusive. Here, using inelastic neutron scattering, we investigate the temperature evolution of the low-energy spin waves in a metallic van der Waals ferromagnet Fe$_{3-x}$GeTe$_{2}$ (Curie temperature $T_{\rm C}\sim160$ K), where the Kondo-lattice behavior emerges in the ferromagnetic phase below a characteristic temperature $T^*\sim90$ K. We observe that the magnon damping constant diverges at both low and high temperatures, exhibiting a minimum coincidentally around $T^*$. Such an observation is analogous to the resistivity minimum as due to the single-impurity Kondo effect. This unusual behavior is described by a formula that combines logarithmic and power terms, representing the dominant contributions from Kondo screening and thermal fluctuations, respectively. Furthermore, we find that the magnon damping increases with momentum below $T_{\rm C}$. These findings can be explained by considering spin-flip electron-magnon scattering, which serves as a magnonic analog of the Kondo-impurity scattering, and thus provides a measure of the Kondo coupling through magnons. Our results provide critical insights into how Kondo coupling manifests itself in a system with magnetic ordering and shed light on the coexistence of and interplay between magnetic order and Kondo effect in itinerant 3$d$-electron systems., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

Magnon polarons are novel elementary excitations possessing hybrid magnonic and phononic signatures, and are responsible for many exotic spintronic and magnonic phenomena. Despite long-term sustained experimental efforts in chasing for magnon polarons, direct spectroscopic evidence of their existence is hardly observed. Here, we report the direct observation of magnon polarons using neutron spectroscopy on a multiferroic Fe$_{2}$Mo$_{3}$O$_{8}$ possessing strong magnon-phonon coupling. Specifically, below the magnetic ordering temperature, a gap opens at the nominal intersection of the original magnon and phonon bands, leading to two separated magnon-polaron bands. Each of the bands undergoes mixing, interconverting and reversing between its magnonic and phononic components. We attribute the formation of magnon polarons to the strong magnon-phonon coupling induced by Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Intriguingly, we find that the band-inverted magnon polarons are topologically nontrivial. Fractional magnetisation plateaus, in which the magnetisation is pinned at a fraction of its saturated value within a range of external magnetic field, are spectacular macroscopic manifestations of the collective quantum behaviours. One prominent example of the plateau phase is found in spin-1/2 triangular-lattice antiferromagnets featuring strong geometrical frustration, and is often interpreted as quantum-fluctuation-stabilised state in magnetic field via the "order-by-disorder" mechanism. Here, we observe an unprecedented 1/3 magnetisation plateau between 5.2 and 7.4 T at 2 K in a spin-1 antiferromagnet Na$_3$Ni$_2$BiO$_6$ with a honeycomb lattice, where conventionally no geometrical frustration is anticipated. By carrying out elastic neutron scattering measurements, we propose the spin structure of the plateau phase to be an unusual partial spin-flop ferrimagnetic order, transitioning from the zigzag antiferromagnetic order in zero field. Our theoretical calculations show that the plateau phase is stabilised by the bond-anisotropic Kitaev interaction. Inspired by the recent discovery of a successive evolutions of electronically ordered states, we present a self-consistent theoretical analysis that treats the interactions responsible for the chiral charge order and superconductivity on an equal footing. It is revealed that the self-consistent theory captures the essential features of the successive temperature evolutions of the electronic states from the high-temperature ``triple-$Q$" $2\times 2$ charge-density-wave state to the nematic charge-density-wave phase, and finally to the low-temperature superconducting state coexisting with the nematic charge density wave. We provide a comprehensive explanation for the temperature evolutions of the charge ordered states and discuss the consequences of the intertwining of the superconductivity with the nematic charge density wave. Our findings not only account for the successive temperature evolutions of the ordered electronic states discovered in experiments but also provide a natural explanation for the two-fold rotational symmetry observed in both the charge-density-wave and superconducting states. Moreover, the intertwining of the superconductivity with the nematic charge density wave order may also be an advisable candidate to reconcile the divergent or seemingly contradictory experimental outcomes regarding the superconducting properties.

We study the motion of a hole with internal degrees of freedom, introduced to the zigzag magnetic ground state of Na$_2$IrO$_3$, by using the self-consistent Born approximation. We find that the low, intermediate, and high-energy spectra are primarily attributed to the singlet, triplet, and quintet hole contributions, respectively. The spectral functions exhibit distinct features such as the electron-like dispersion of low-energy states near the $\Gamma$ point, the maximum M-point intensity of mid-energy states, and the hole-like dispersion of high-energy states. These features are robust and almost insensitive to the exchange model and Hund's coupling, and are in qualitative agreement with the angular-resolved photoemission spectra observed in Na$_2$IrO$_3$. Our results reveal that the interference between internal degrees of freedom in different sublattices plays an important role in inducing the complex dispersions.

We investigate the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ nearest-neighber Heisenberg model with the four-site ring-exchange $J_4$ and chiral interaction $J_\chi$ on the triangular lattice by using the variational Monte Carlo method. The $J_4$ term induces the quadratic band touching (QBT) quantum spin liquid (QSL) with only a $d+id$ spinon pairing (without hopping term), the nodal $d$-wave QSL and U(1) QSL with a finite spinon Fermi surface progressively. The effect of the chiral interaction $J_\chi$ can enrich the phase diagram with two interesting chiral QSLs (topological orders) with the same quantized Chern number $\mathcal{C} = \frac{1}{2}$ and ground-state degeneracy GSD = 2, namely the U(1) chiral spin liquid (CSL) and Z$_2$ $d+id$-wave QSL. The nodal $d$-wave QSL is fragile and will turn to the Z$_2$ $d+id$ QSL with any finite $J_\chi$ within our numerical calculation. However, in the process from QBT to the Z$_2$ $d+id$ QSL with the increase of $J_\chi$, an exotic crossover region is found. In this region, the previous QBT state acquires a small hopping term so that it opens a small gap at the otherwise band touching points, and leads to an energy minimum which is energetically more favorable compared to another competitive local minimum from the Z$_2$ $d+id$ QSL. We dub this state as the proximate QBT QSL and it gives way to the Z$_2$ $d+id$ QSL eventually. Therefore, the cooperation of the $J_4$ and $J_\chi$ terms favors mostly the Z$_2$ $d+id$-wave QSL, so that this phase occupies the largest region in the phase diagram.

Recently, a SU(4) $\pi$-flux Hubbard model on the honeycomb lattice has been proposed to study the spin-orbit excitations of $\alpha$-ZrCl$_3$ [Phys.~Rev.~Lett. 121.097201~(2017)]. Based on this model with a zigzag edge, we show the edge defects can induce edge flat bands that result in a SU(4) edge ferromagnetism. We develop an effective one-dimensional interaction Hamiltonian to study the corresponding SU(4) spin excitations. Remarkably, SU(4) spin excitations of the edge ferromagnet appear as a continuum covering the entire energy region rather than usual magnons. Through further entanglement entropy analysis, we suggest that the continuum consists of fractionalized spin excitations from the disappeared magnons, except for that from the particle-hole Stoner excitations. Moreover, in ribbon systems with finite widths, the disappeared magnons can be restored in the gap formed by the finite-size effect and the optical branch of the restored magnons are found to be topological nontrivial.

We introduce the spin entanglement entropy (EE) to characterize spin excitations. The scalings of EEs are elaborated as $\ln N$, $\ln N+D_k$ and $2\ln N+D$ for the single-magnon states, two-magnon bound states and two-magnon continuum, respectively, based on the Bethe ansatz solutions of the ferromagnetic spin chain with $N$ sites. The $\ln N$ divergence for the bound states reveals the two magnons emerge as a new quasiparticle. More importantly, the nonzero intercepts ($D_k,D$) embody the many-body effects of two-magnon states. In particular, an exact relation between the intercept of EEs and an observable quantity, the two-magnon distance, is established for the bound states. In such a case, we quantify the two-magnon confinement in a spin system by the increasing entanglement with the distance as a particle physics analogue. Moreover, the EEs can also be used to study the evolution of the excitations. When the bound states are immersed in the continuum in the alternating chain, they undergo an oscillating confinement-deconfinement crossover, shown by the oscillations of the EEs and two-magnon distance with the chain length., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

We employ the spin cluster perturbation theory to investigate the dynamical properties of the antiferromagnetic $J_{1}$-$J_{2}$ Heisenberg model on the honeycomb lattice. We obtain the excitation spectra for all possible phases in the phase diagram, including the N\'{e}el phase, plaquette valence-bond-solid phase, dimer valence-bond-solid phase and stripe antiferromagnetic phase. In the N\'{e}el phase, besides the obvious renormalization of the magnon dispersion, we find that the spectrum exhibits a dome-shaped broad continuum around the second Brillouin zone (BZ) and the additional strong continuum close to the corner of the BZ. In the valence-bond-solid phases, the spectra are dominated by a strong broad continuum all the way down to below $J_1$ coexisting with the lowest-energy triplon modes characterizing the plaquette and dimer phases. We ascribe this strong broad continuum and the additional continuum close to the BZ corner in the N\'{e}el phase to the contributions of fractionalized spinon excitations. In the stripe phase, a clear difference from the linear spin wave approximation is that the spectrum is gapped at the $M$ point while that obtained by the latter is gapless due to the strong quantum fluctuations. As one of the most promising Kitaev quantum-spin-liquid (QSL) candidates, $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$ has received a great amount of attention. However, its ground state exhibits a long-range zigzag magnetic order, which defies the QSL phase. Nevertheless, the magnetic order is fragile and can be completely suppressed by applying an external magnetic field. Here, we explore the evolution of magnetic excitations of $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$ under an in-plane magnetic field, by carrying out inelastic neutron scattering measurements on high-quality single crystals. Under zero field, there exist spin-wave excitations near the $M$ point and a continuum near the $\mit\Gamma$ point, which are believed to be associated with the zigzag magnetic order and fractional excitations of the Kitaev QSL state, respectively. By increasing the magnetic field, the spin-wave excitations gradually give way to the continuous excitations. On the verge of the critical field $\mu_0H_{\rm c}=7.5$ T, the former vanish and only the latter is left, indicating the emergence of a pure QSL state. By further increasing the field strength, the excitations near the $\mit\Gamma$ point become more intense. By following the gap evolution of the excitations near the $\mit\Gamma$ point, we are able to establish a phase diagram composed of three interesting phases, including a gapped zigzag order phase at low fields, possibly-gapless QSL phase near $\mu_0H_{\rm c}$, and gapped partially polarized phase at high fields. These results demonstrate that an in-plane magnetic field can drive $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$ into a long-sought QSL state near the critical field., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

Dimerized magnets forming alternating Heisenberg chains exhibit quantum coherence and entanglement and thus can find potential applications in quantum information and computation. However, magnetic systems typically undergo thermal decoherence at finite temperatures. Here, we show inelastic neutron scattering results on an alternating antiferromagnetic-ferromagnetic chain compound Na$_2$Cu$_2$TeO$_6$ that the excited quasiparticles can counter thermal decoherence and maintain strong correlations at elevated temperatures. At low temperatures, we observe clear dispersive singlet-triplet excitations arising from the dimers formed along the crystalline $b$-axis. The excitation gap is of $\sim$18 meV and the bandwidth is about half of the gap. The band top energy has a weak modulation along the [100] direction, indicative of a small interchain coupling. The gap increases while the bandwidth decreases with increasing temperature, leading to a strong reduction in the available phase space for the triplons. As a result, the Lorentzian-type energy broadening becomes highly asymmetric as the temperature is raised. These results are associated with a strongly correlated state resulting from hard-core constraint and quasiparticle interactions. We consider these results to be not only evidence for strong correlations at finite temperatures in Na$_2$Cu$_2$TeO$_6$, but also for the universality of the strongly correlated state in a broad range of quantum magnetic systems., Comment: Published in PRB, 8 pages, 6 figures

Disorder is important in the study of quantum spin liquids, but its role on the spin dynamics remains elusive. Here, we explore the disorder effect by investigating the magnetic-field dependence of the low-energy magnetic excitations in a triangular-lattice frustrated magnet YbZnGaO$_4$ with inelastic neutron scattering. With an intermediate field of 2.5 T applied along the $c$-axis, the broad continuum at zero field becomes more smeared both in energy and momentum. With a field up to 10 T, which fully polarizes the magnetic moments, we observe clear spin-wave excitations with a gap of $\sim$1.4 meV comparable to the bandwidth. However, the spectra are significantly broadened. The excitation spectra both at zero and high fields can be reproduced by performing classical Monte Carlo simulations which take into account the disorder effect arising from the random site mixing of nonmagnetic Zn$^{2+}$ and Ga$^{3+}$ ions. $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$ has been studied extensively because of its proximity to the Kitaev quantum-spin-liquid (QSL) phase and the possibility of approaching it by tuning the competing interactions. Here we present the first polarized inelastic neutron scattering study on $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$ single crystals to explore the scattering continuum around the $\Gamma$ point at the Brillouin zone center, which was hypothesized to be resulting from the Kitaev QSL state but without concrete evidence. With polarization analyses, we find that while the spin-wave excitations around the M point vanish above the transition temperature $T_{\rm N}$, the pure magnetic continuous excitations around the $\Gamma$ point are robust against temperature. Furthermore, by calculating the dynamical spin-spin correlation function using the cluster perturbation theory, we derive magnetic dispersion spectra based on the $K$-$\Gamma$ model, which involves with a ferromagnetic Kitaev interaction of -7.2 meV and an off-diagonal interaction of 5.6 meV. We find this model can reproduce not only the spin-wave excitation spectra around the M point, but also the non-spin-wave continuous magnetic excitations around the $\Gamma$ point. These results provide evidence for the existence of fractional excitations around the $\Gamma$ point originating from the Kitaev QSL state, and further support the validity of the $K$-$\Gamma$ model as the effective minimal spin model to describe $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$., Comment: Published in Chinese Physics Letters as Express Letter, 8 pages, 4 figures

In the local or itinerant extreme, magnetic excitations can be described by the Heisenberg model which treats electron spins as localized moments, or by the itinerant-electron model where the exchange interaction between electrons leads to unequal numbers of electrons with up and down spins. However, it has been elusive when both local moments and itinerant electrons are present in the intermediate range. Using inelastic neutron scattering, we provide direct spectroscopic evidence on the coexistence of and interplay between local moments and itinerant electrons in a van der Waals metallic ferromagnet Fe$_{2.72}$GeTe$_{2}$, which can sustain tunable room-temperature ferromagnetism down to the monolayer limit. We find that there exist ferromagnetic spin-wave excitations dispersing from the zone center at low energies resulting from local moments, and a column-like broad continuum at the zone boundary at high energies up to over 100 meV resulting from itinerant electrons. Unlike the two-dimensional crystal structure, the low-energy mode exhibits a three-dimensional nature, and the high-energy mode also has an out-of-plane dependence. Both modes persist well above the Curie temperature of 160 K. Our neutron spectroscopic data reveal that the low-energy spin waves at 100 K are more coherent than those at 4 K, which is evidence of the weakening of the Kondo screening at high temperatures. These results unambiguously demonstrate the coexistence of local moments and itinerant electrons, and the Kondo effect between these two components in Fe$_{2.72}$GeTe$_{2}$. Such behaviors are generally expected in heavy-fermion systems with heavy $f$ electrons but rarely clearly observed in materials with light $d$ electrons. We introduce an entanglement entropy analysis to quantitatively identify the confinement and deconfinement of the spinons in the spin excitations of quantum magnets. Our proposal is implemented by the parton construction of a honeycomb-lattice antiferromagnet exhibiting high-energy anomalous spectra. To obtain the quasiparticles of spin excitations for entanglement entropy calculations, we develop an effective Hamiltonian using the random phase approximation. We elaborate quantitatively the deconfinement-to-confinement transition of spinons in the anomalous spectra with the increase of the Hubbard interaction, indicating the avoided fractionalization of magnons in the strong interaction regime. Meanwhile, the Higgs mode at the {\Gamma}0 point is fractionalized into four degenerate spinon pairs, although it appears as a sharp well-defined peak in the spectra. Topological magnons are bosonic analogues of topological fermions in electronic systems. They have been studied extensively by theory but rarely realized by experiment. Here, by performing inelastic neutron scattering measurements on single crystals of a two-dimensional ferromagnet CrBr$_3$, which was classified as Dirac magnon semimetal featured by the linear bands crossing at the Dirac points, we fully map out the magnetic excitation spectra, and reveal that there is an apparent gap of $\sim$3.5~meV between the acoustic and optical branches of the magnons at the K point. By collaborative efforts between experiment and theoretical calculations using a five-orbital Hubbard model obtained from first-principles calculations to derive the exchange parameters, we find that a Hamiltonian with Heisenberg exchange interactions, next-nearest-neighbor Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction, and single-ion anisotropy is more appropriate to describe the system. Calculations using the model show that the lower and upper magnon bands separated by the gap exhibit Chern numbers of $\pm1$. Quantum spin liquids (QSLs) are an exotic state of matter that is subject to extensive research. However, the relationship between the ubiquitous disorder and the QSL behaviors is still unclear. Here, by performing comparative experimental studies on two kagom\'{e}-lattice QSL candidates, Tm$_3$Sb$_3$Zn$_2$O$_{14}$ and Tm$_3$Sb$_3$Mg$_2$O$_{14}$, which are isostructural to each other but with strong and weak structural disorder, respectively, we show unambiguously that the disorder can induce spin-liquid-like features. In particular, both compounds show dominant antiferromagnetic interactions with a Curie-Weiss temperature of -17.4 and -28.7 K for Tm$_3$Sb$_3$Zn$_2$O$_{14}$ and Tm$_3$Sb$_3$Mg$_2$O$_{14}$, respectively, but remain disordered down to about 0.05 K. Specific heat results suggest the presence of gapless magnetic excitations characterized by a residual linear term. Magnetic excitation spectra obtained by inelastic neutron scattering (INS) at low temperatures display broad continua. All these observations are consistent with those of a QSL. However, we find in Tm$_3$Sb$_3$Zn$_2$O$_{14}$ which has strong disorder resulting from the random mixing of the magnetic Tm$^{3+}$ and nonmagnetic Zn$^{2+}$, that the low-energy magnetic excitations observed in the specific heat and INS measurements are substantially enhanced, compared to those of Tm$_3$Sb$_3$Mg$_2$O$_{14}$ which has much less disorder. We believe that the effective spins of the Tm$^{3+}$ ions in the Zn$^{2+}$/Mg$^{2+}$ sites give rise to the low-energy magnetic excitations, and the amount of the random occupancy determines the excitation strength. The celebrated Kitaev honeycomb model provides an analytically tractable example with an exact quantum spin liquid ground state. While in real materials, other types of interactions besides the Kitaev coupling ($K$) are present, such as the Heisenberg ($J$) and symmetric off-diagonal ($\Gamma$) terms, and these interactions can also be generalized to a triangular lattice. Here, we carry out a comprehensive study of the $J$-$K$-$\Gamma$ model on the triangular lattice covering the full parameters region, using the combination of the exact diagonalization, classical Monte Carlo and analytic methods. In the HK limit ($\Gamma=0$), we find five quantum phases which are quite similar to their classical counterparts. Among them, the stripe-A and dual N\'{e}el phase are robust against the $\Gamma$ term, in particular the stripe-A extends to the region connecting the $K=-1$ and $K=1$ for $\Gamma<0$. Though the 120$^\circ$ N\'{e}el phase also extends to a finite $\Gamma$, its region has been largely reduced compared to the previous classical result. Interestingly, the ferromagnetic (dubbed as FM-A) phase and the stripe-B phase are unstable in response to an infinitesimal $\Gamma$ interaction. Moreover, we find five new phases for $\Gamma\ne 0$ which are elaborated by both the quantum and classical numerical methods. Part of the space previously identified as 120$^\circ$ N\'{e}el phase in the classical study is found to give way to the modulated stripe phase. Depending on the sign of the $\Gamma$, the FM-A phase transits into the FM-B ($\Gamma>0$) and FM-C ($\Gamma<0$) phase with different spin orientations, and the stripe-B phase transits into the stripe-C ($\Gamma>0$) and stripe-A ($\Gamma<0$). Around the positive $\Gamma$ point, due to the interplay of the Heisenberg, Kiatev and $\Gamma$ interactions, we find a possible quantum spin liquid with a continuum in spin excitations., Comment: 12 pages, 12 figures

The elementary excitations from the conventional magnetic ordered states, such as ferromagnets and antiferromagnets, are magnons. Here, we elaborate a case where the well-defined magnons are absent completely and the spin excitation spectra exhibit an entire continuum in the itinerant edge ferromagnetic state of graphene arising from the flatband edge electronic states. Based on the further studies of the entanglement entropy and finite-size analysis, we show that the continuum other than the Stoner part results from the spin-1/2 spinons deconfined from magnons. The spinon continuum in a magnetically ordered state is ascribed to a ferromagnetic Luttinger liquid in this edge ferromagnet. We perform thermodynamic and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) measurements to study the lattice dynamics (phonons) of a cubic collinear antiferromagnet Cu$_3$TeO$_6$ which hosts topological spin excitations (magnons). While the specific heat and thermal conductivity results show that the thermal transport is dominated by phonons, the deviation of the thermal conductivity from a pure phononic model indicates that there is a strong coupling between magnons and phonons. In the INS measurements, we find a mode in the excitation spectra at 4.5 K, which exhibits a slight downward dispersion around the Brillouin zone center. This mode disappears above the N\'{e}el temperature, and thus cannot be a phonon. Furthermore, the dispersion is distinct from that of a magnon. Instead, it can be explained by the magnon-polaron mode, which is new collective excitations resulting from the hybridization between magnons and phonons. We consider the suppression of the thermal conductivity and emergence of the magnon-polaron mode to be evidence for magnon-phonon coupling in Cu$_3$TeO$_6$., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, formula Cu3TeO6 updated in the title and abstract

Dirac matters provide a platform for exploring the interplay of their carriers with other quantum phenomena. Sr$_{1-x}$Mn$_{1-y}$Sb$_2$ has been proposed to be a magnetic Weyl semimetal and provides an excellent platform to study the coupling between Weyl fermions and magnons. Here, we report comprehensive inelastic neutron scattering (INS) measurements on single crystals of Sr$_{1-x}$Mn$_{1-y}$Sb$_2$, which have been well characterized by magnetization and magnetotransport measurements, both of which demonstrate that the material is a topologically nontrivial semimetal. The INS spectra clearly show a spin gap of $\sim6$ meV. The dispersion in the magnetic Mn layer extends up to about 76 meV, while that between the layers has a narrow band width of 6 meV. We find that the linear spin-wave theory using a Heisenberg spin Hamiltonian can reproduce the experimental spectra with the following parameters: a nearest-neighbor ($SJ_1\sim28.0$ meV) and next-nearest-neighbor in-plane exchange interaction ($SJ_2\sim9.3$ meV) , interlayer exchange coupling ($SJ_c\sim-0.1$ meV), and spin anisotropy constant ($SD\sim-0.07$ meV). Despite the coexistence of Weyl fermions and magnons, we find no clear evidence that the magnetic dynamics are influenced by the Weyl fermions in Sr$_{1-x}$Mn$_{1-y}$Sb$_2$, possibly because that the Weyl fermions and magnons reside in the Sb and Mn layers separately, and the interlayer coupling is weak due to the quasi-two-dimensional nature of the material, as also evident from the small $SJ_c$ of -0.1 meV., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures

Metallization of 1T-TaS2 is generally initiated at the domain boundary of charge density wave (CDW), at the expense of its long-range order. However, we demonstrate in this study that the metallization of 1T-TaS2 can be also realized without breaking the long-range CDW order upon surface alkali doping. By using scanning tunneling microscopy, we find the long-range CDW order is always persisting, and the metallization is instead associated with additional in-gap excitations. Interestingly, the in-gap excitation is near the top of the lower Hubbard band, in contrast to a conventional electron-doped Mott insulator where it is beneath the upper Hubbard band. In combination with the numerical calculations, we suggest that the appearance of the in-gap excitations near the lower Hubbard band is mainly due to the effectively reduced on-site Coulomb energy by the adsorbed alkali ions., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, to appear in Phys. We elaborate the first theoretical realization of two dimensional itinerant topological magnons, based on the quarter filled Haldane-Hubbard model with a nearly-flat electron band. By using the exact diagonalization method with a projection onto this band, we obtain the spin wave excitations over the itinerant ferromagnetic ground state. In the flatband limit, the excitation exhibits similar dispersion to the free electron band with Dirac magnons. The nonflatness of the electron band opens a topological gap at Dirac points and leads to an acoustic magnon band with a nonzero Chern number. We further show that tuning the sublattice Hubbard interactions or the next-nearest-neighbor hopping can induce a topological transition characterized by the gap closing and reopening, and the existence of the in-gap magnons on magnetic domain walls. We find an exact set of bases for magnons in the flatband limit constructed from sublattice particle-hole vectors and derive an effective model to explore the origin of the topological magnon which is attributed to the ``mass inversion mechanism''.

In condensed matter physics, there is a novel phase termed "quantum spin liquid", in which strong quantum fluctuations prevent the long-range magnetic order from being established, and so the electron spins do not form an ordered pattern but remain "liquid" like even at absolute zero temperature. Such a phase is not involved with any spontaneous symmetry breaking and local order parameter, and to understand it is beyond the conventional phase transition theory. Due to the rich physics and exotic properties of quantum spin liquids, such as the long-range entanglement and fractional quantum excitations, which are believed to hold great potentials in quantum communication and computation, they have been intensively studied since the concept was proposed in 1973 by P. W. Anderson. Currently, experimental identifications of a quantum spin liquid still remain as a great challenge. Here, we highlight some interesting experimental progress that has been made recently. We show that a conical magnetic field ${\bf H}=(1,1,1)H$ can be used to tune the topological order and hence anyon excitations of the $\mathrm{Z_2}$ quantum spin liquid in the isotropic antiferromagnetic Kitaev model. A novel topological order, featured with Chern number $C=4$ and Abelian anyon excitations, is induced in a narrow range of intermediate fields $H_{c1}\leq H\leq H_{c2}$. On the other hand, the $C=1$ Ising-topological order with non-Abelian anyon excitations, is previously known to be present at small fields, and interestingly, is found here to survive up to $H_{c1}$, and revive above $H_{c2}$, until the system becomes trivial above a higher field $H_{c3}$. We study the spin-1 excitation spectra of the flatband ferromagnetic phases in interacting topological insulators. As a paradigm, we consider a quarter filled square lattice Hubbard model whose free part is the $\pi$ flux state with topologically nontrivial and nearly-flat electron bands, which can realize either the Chern or $Z_2$ Hubbard model. By using the numerical exact diagonalization method with a projection onto the nearly-flat band, we obtain the ferromagnetic spin-1 excitation spectra for both the Chern and $Z_2$ Hubbard models, consisting of spin waves and Stoner continuum. The spectra exhibit quite distinct dispersions for both cases, in particular the spin wave is gapless for the Chern Hubbard model, while gapped for the $Z_2$ Hubbard model. Remarkably, in both cases, the nonflatness of the free electron bands introduces dips in the lower boundary of the Stoner continuum. It significantly renormalizes the energies of the spin waves around these dips downward and leads to roton-like spin excitations. We elaborate that it is the softening of the roton-like modes that destabilizes the ferromagnetic phase, and determine the parameter region where the ferromagnetic phase is stable., Comment: Accepted by PRB

Based on the mapping between $s=1/2$ spin operators and hard-core bosons, we extend the cluster perturbation theory to spin systems and study the whole excitation spectrum of the antiferromagnetic $J_{1}$-$J_{2}$ Heisenberg model on the square lattice. In the N\'eel phase for $J_{2}\lesssim0.4J_{1}$, in addition to the dominant magnon excitation, there is an obvious continuum close to $(\pi,0)$ in the Brillouin zone indicating the deconfined spin-1/2 spinon excitations. In the stripe phase for $J_{2}\gtrsim0.6J_{1}$, we find similar high-energy two-spinon continuums at $(\pi/2,\pi/2)$ and $(\pi/2,\pi)$, respectively. The intermediate phase is characterized by a spectrum with completely deconfined broad continuum, which is attributed to a $Z_{2}$ quantum spin liquid with the aid of a variational-Monte-Carlo analysis., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures

The magnetic properties of 4d and 5d transition-metal insulating compounds with the honeycomb structure are believed to be described by the Heisenberg-Kitaev model, which contains both the isotropic Heisenberg interaction J and anisotropic Kitaev interaction K. In this paper, to investigate the charge dynamics in these materials, we study the single-hole propagation of the t-J-K model in various magnetically ordered phases by the self-consistent Born approximation. We find that there are low-energy coherent quasiparticle (QP) excitations in all of these phases which appear firstly around the K point in the Brillouin zone (BZ), but the band-widths of these QPs are very small due to the hole-magnon coupling. Interestingly, in the zigzag phase relevant to recent experiments, though the QP weights are largely suppressed in the physical spectra in the first BZ, we find that they recover in the extended BZs. Moreover, our results reveal that the low-energy QP spectra are reduced with the increase of K., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

Different from previous scenarios that topological magnons emerge in local spin models, we propose an alternative that itinerant electron magnets can host topological magnons. A one-dimensional Tasaki model with a flat band is considered as the prototype. This model can be viewed as a quarter filled periodic Anderson model with impurities located in between and hybridizing with the nearest-neighbor conducting electrons, together with a Hubbard repulsion for these electrons. By increasing the Hubbard interaction, the gap between the acoustic and optical magnons closes and reopens while the Berry phase of the acoustic band changes from 0 to $\pi$, leading to the occurrence of a topological transition. After this transition, there always exist in-gap edge magnonic modes which is consistent with the bulk-edge correspondence. To study exotic excitations described by parafermions in the possible spin liquid states of SU($n$) spin systems, we introduce a parafermion parton approach. The SU($n$) spin operators can be represented by clock and shift matrices, which are shown to be the polynomials of parafermion operators in the parafermion representation. We find that SU($n$) spins can be decomposed into $n$ parafermion matrices of degree one. In this decomposition, the spin has a $\{\bigotimes{\rm SU}(n)\}^{n-1}$ gauge symmetry. As an application, we study the one-dimensional three-state clock model and generalized Kitaev model by a mean-field theory, both of them have been proved to be related to parafermion excitations. We find that with the symmetries of translations, $6$-fold rotation and combination of parity and time reversal, there are $9$ types and $102$ solutions for two-dimensional $Z_3$ parafermion spin liquids on the honeycomb lattice. On the contrast, there are $9$ types and $36$ solutions if both parity and time-reversal symmetries are present. We present the application of the SU($N$) ($N>2$) spin-wave theory to spin-orbital Mott insulators whose ground states exhibit magnetic orders. When taking both the spin and orbital degrees of freedom into account rather than projecting onto the Kramers doublet, the lowest spin-orbital locking energy levels, due to the inevitable spin-orbital multipole exchange interactions, the SU($N$) spin-wave theory should take the place of the SU($2$) one. To implement the application, we introduce an efficient general local mean field approach which involves all the local fluctuations into the SU($N$) linear spin-wave theory. Our approach is tested firstly by calculating the multipolar spin-wave spectra of the SU($4$) antiferromagnetic model. Then we apply it to spin-orbital Mott insulators. It is revealed that the Hund's coupling would influence the effectiveness of the isospin-$1/2$ representation when the spin orbital coupling is not large enough. Besides, we also calculate the spin-wave spectra based on the first principle calculations for two concrete materials, $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$ and Sr$_2$IrO$_4$. Topological magnons are emergent quantum spin excitations featured by magnon bands crossing linearly at the points dubbed nodes, analogous to fermions in topological electronic systems. Experimental realization of topological magnons in three dimensions has not been reported so far. Here, by measuring spin excitations (magnons) of a three-dimensional antiferromagnet Cu$_{3}$TeO$_{6}$ with inelastic neutron scattering, we provide direct spectroscopic evidence for the coexistence of symmetry-protected Dirac and triply degenerate nodes, the latter involving three-component magnons beyond the Dirac-Weyl framework. Our theoretical calculations show that the observed topological magnon band structure can be well described by the linear-spin-wave theory based on a Hamiltonian dominated by the nearest-neighbour exchange interaction $J_1$. As such, we showcase Cu$_{3}$TeO$_{6}$ as an example system where Dirac and triply degenerate magnonic nodal excitations coexist, demonstrate an exotic topological state of matter, and provide a fresh ground to explore the topological properties in quantum materials., Comment: Version as published in Nature Communications

We report on comprehensive results identifying the ground state of a triangular-lattice structured YbZnGaO$_4$ to be spin glass, including no long-range magnetic order, prominent broad excitation continua, and absence of magnetic thermal conductivity. More crucially, from the ultralow-temperature a.c. susceptibility measurements, we unambiguously observe frequency-dependent peaks around 0.1 K, indicating the spin-glass ground state. We suggest this conclusion to hold also for its sister compound YbMgGaO$_4$, which is confirmed by the observation of spin freezing at low temperatures.
