The weak gravitational lensing is a powerful tool in modern cosmology. To accurately measure the weak lensing signal, one has to control the systematic bias to a small level. One of the most difficult problems is how to correct the smearing effect of the Point Spread Function (PSF) on the shape of the galaxies. The chromaticity of PSF for a broad-band observation can lead to new subtle effects. Since the PSF is wavelength dependent and the spectrum energy distributions between stars and galaxies are different, the effective PSF measured from the star images will be different from that smears the galaxies. Such a bias is called colour bias. We estimate it in the optical bands of the Chinese Space Station Survey Telescope from simulated PSFs, and show the dependence on the colour and redshift of the galaxies. Moreover, due to the spatial variation of spectra over the galaxy image, there exists another higher-order bias, colour gradient bias. Our results show that both colour bias and colour gradient bias are generally below $0.1$ percent in CSST. Only for small-size galaxies, one needs to be careful about the colour gradient bias in the weak lensing analysis using CSST data.

Aims. With the next generation of large surveys coming to the stage of observational cosmology soon, it is important to explore their potential synergies and to maximise their scientific outcomes. In this study, we aim to investigate the complementarity of the two upcoming space missions Euclid and the China Space Station Telescope (CSST), focusing on weak lensing (WL) cosmology. In particular, we analyse the photometric redshifts (photo-zs) and the galaxy blending effects. For Euclid, WL measurements suffer from chromatic PSF effects. For this, CSST can provide valuable information for Euclid to obtain more accurate PSF, and to calibrate the color and color-gradient biases for WL measurements. Methods. We create image simulations for different surveys, and quantify the photo-z performance. For blending analyses, we employ high-resolution HST/CANDELS data to mock Euclid, CSST, and an LSST-like survey. We analyse the blending fraction for different cases, and the blending effects on galaxy photometry. Furthermore, we demonstrate that CSST can provide a large enough number of high SNR multi-band galaxy images to calibrate the color-gradient biases for Euclid. Results. The sky coverage of Euclid lies entirely within the CSST footprint. The combination of Euclid with CSST data can be done more uniformly than with the various ground-based data. Our studies show that by combining Euclid and CSST, we can reach a photo-z precision of $\sigma_{\rm NMAD} \approx 0.04$, and an outlier fraction of $\eta\approx 2.4\%$. Because of the similarly high resolutions, the data combination of Euclid and CSST can be relatively straightforward for photometry. To include ground-based data, however, sophisticated deblending utilizing priors from high-resolution space data is demanded. Based on the initial state geometrical symmetry for collisions between two identical heavy ions at high energy, the general form for the one- and two-particle azimuthal distributions is deduced. Relation between these distributions and the usual flow parameters is discussed. New measures for the azimuthal correlations are suggested. Some numerical results on the values of the measures are shown from an event generator for Au+Au collisions with different colliding centralities at 200 GeV., Comment: 7 pages in revtex, 5 figures in eps format

In this work, we mainly study the magnification relations of quad lens models for cusp, fold and cross configurations. By dividing and ray-tracing in different image regions, we numerically derive the positions and magnifications of the four images for a point source lying inside of the astroid caustic. Then, based on the magnifications, we calculate the signed cusp and fold relations for the singular isothermal elliptical lenses. The signed fold relation map has positive and negative regions, and the positive region is usually larger than the negative region as has been confirmed before. It can also explain that for many observed fold image pairs, the fluxes of the Fermat minimum images are apt to be larger than those of the saddle images. We define a new quantity cross relation which describes the magnification discrepancy between two minimum images and two saddle images. Distance ratio is also defined as the ratio of the distance of two saddle images to that of two minimum images. We calculate the cross relations and distance ratios for nine observed Einstein crosses. In theory, for most of the quad lens models, the cross relations decrease as the distance ratios increase. In observation, the cross relations of the nine samples do not agree with the quad lens models very well, nevertheless, the cross relations of the nine samples do not give obvious evidence for anomalous flux ratio as the cusp and fold types do. Then, we discuss several reasons for the disagreement, and expect good consistencies for more precise observations and better lens models in the future., Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We review five often used quad lens models, each of which has analytical solutions and can produce four images at most. Each lens model has two parameters, including one that describes the intensity of non-dimensional mass density, and the other one that describes the deviation from the circular lens. In our recent work, we have found that the cusp and the fold summations are not equal to 0, when a point source infinitely approaches a cusp or a fold from inner side of the caustic. Based on the magnification invariant theory, which states that the sum of signed magnifications of the total images of a given source is a constant, we calculate the cusp summations for the five lens models. We find that the cusp summations are always larger than 0 for source on the major cusps, while can be larger or smaller than 0 for source on the minor cusps. We also find that if these lenses tend to the circular lens, the major and minor cusp summations will have infinite values, and with positive and negative signs respectively. The cusp summations do not change significantly if the sources are slightly deviated from the cusps. In addition, through the magnification invariants, we also derive the analytical signed cusp relations on the axes for three lens models. We find that both on the major and the minor axes the larger the lenses deviated from the circular lens, the larger the signed cusp relations. The major cusp relations are usually larger than the absolute minor cusp relations, but for some lens models with very large deviation from circular lens, the minor cusp relations can be larger than the major cusp relations., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

An arbitrary surface mass density of gravitational lens can be decomposed into multipole components. We simulate the ray-tracing for the multipolar mass distribution of generalized SIS (Singular Isothermal Sphere) model, based on the deflection angles which are analytically calculated. The magnification patterns in the source plane are then derived from inverse shooting technique. As have been found, the caustics of odd mode lenses are composed of two overlapping layers for some lens models. When a point source traverses such kind of overlapping caustics, the image numbers change by \pm 4, rather than \pm 2. There are two kinds of images for the caustics. One is the critical curve and the other is the transition locus. It is found that the image number of the fold is exactly the average value of image numbers on two sides of the fold, while the image number of the cusp is equal to the smaller one. We also focus on the magnification patterns of the quadrupole (m = 2) lenses under the perturbations of m = 3, 4 and 5 mode components, and found that one, two, and three butterfly or swallowtail singularities can be produced respectively. With the increasing intensity of the high-order perturbations, the singularities grow up to bring sixfold image regions. If these perturbations are large enough to let two or three of the butterflies or swallowtails contact, eightfold or tenfold image regions can be produced as well. We present the results from the first public blind PSF reconstruction challenge, the GRavitational lEnsing Accuracy Testing 2010 (GREAT10) Star Challenge. Reconstruction of a spatially varying PSF, sparsely sampled by stars, at non-star positions is a critical part in the image analysis for weak lensing where inaccuracies in the modelled ellipticity and size-squared can impact the ability to measure the shapes of galaxies. This is of importance because weak lensing is a particularly sensitive probe of dark energy, and can be used to map the mass distribution of large scale structure. Participants in the challenge were presented with 27,500 stars over 1300 images subdivided into 26 sets, where in each set a category change was made in the type or spatial variation of the PSF. Thirty submissions were made by 9 teams. The best methods reconstructed the PSF with an accuracy of ~0.00025 in ellipticity and ~0.00074 in size squared. For a fixed pixel scale narrower PSFs were found to be more difficult to model than larger PSFs, and the PSF reconstruction was severely degraded with the inclusion of an atmospheric turbulence model (although this result is likely to be a strong function of the amplitude of the turbulence power spectrum)., Comment: 23 pages, 7 figures; submitted to ApJS

We use a high-resolution $N$-body simulation to investigate the influence of background galaxy properties, including redshift, size, shape and clustering, on the efficiency of forming giant arcs by gravitational lensing of rich galaxy clusters. Two large sets of ray-tracing simulations are carried out for 10 massive clusters at two redshifts, i.e. $z_{\rm l} \sim 0.2$ and 0.3. The virial mass ($M_{\rm vir}$) of the simulated lens clusters at $z\sim0.2$ ranges from $6.8\times10^{14} h^{-1} {M_{\odot}}$ to $1.1\times 10^{15} h^{-1} M_{\odot}$. The information of background galaxies brighter than 25 magnitude in the $I$-band is taken from Cosmological Evolution Survey (COSMOS) imaging data. Around $1.7\times 10^5$ strong lensing realizations with these images as background galaxies have been performed for each set. We find that the efficiency for forming giant arcs for $z_{\rm l}=0.2$ clusters is broadly consistent with observations. The efficiency of producing giant arcs by rich clusters is weakly dependent on the source size and clustering. Our principal finding is that a small proportion ($\sim 1/3$) of galaxies with elongated shapes (e.g. ellipticity $\epsilon=1-b/a>0.5$) can boost the number of giant arcs substantially. Compared with recent studies where a uniform ellipticity distribution from 0 to 0.5 is used for the sources, the adoption of directly observed shape distribution increases the number of giant arcs by a factor of $\sim2$. By means of two different parametrizations of quark energy loss and the nuclear parton distributions determined only with lepton-nuclear deep inelastic scattering experimental data, a leading order phenomenological analysis is performed on the nuclear Drell-Yan differential cross section ratios as a function of the quark momentum fraction in the beam proton and target nuclei for E772 experimental data. It is shown that there is the quark energy loss effect in nuclear Drell-Yan process apart from the nuclear effects on the parton distribution as in deep inelastic scattering. The uncertainties due to quark energy loss effect is quantified on determining nuclear sea quark distribution by using nuclear Drell-Yan data. It is found that the quark energy loss effect on nuclear Drell-Yan cross section ratios make greater with the increase of quark momentum fraction in the target nuclei. The uncertainties from quark energy loss become bigger as the nucleus A come to be heavier. The Drell-Yan data on proton incident middle and heavy nuclei versus deuterium would result in an overestimate for nuclear modifications on sea quark distribution functions with neglecting the quark energy loss. Our results are hoped to provide good directional information on the magnitude and form of nuclear modifications on sea quark distribution functions by means of the nuclear Drell-Yan experimental data., Comment: 16 pages, 3 figures

We use high-resolution N-body numerical simulations to study the number of predicted large-separation multiply-imaged systems produced by clusters of galaxies in the SDSS photometric and spectroscopic quasar samples. We incorporate the condensation of baryons at the centre of clusters by (artificially) adding a brightest central galaxy (BCG) as a truncated isothermal sphere. We make predictions in two flat cosmological models: a LCDM model with a matter density $\Omega_0=0.3$, and $\sigma_8=0.9$ (LCDM0), and a model favoured by the WMAP three-year data with $\Omega_0=0.238$, and $\sigma_8=0.74$ (WMAP3). We found that the predicted multiply-imaged quasars with separation >10" is about 6.2 and 2.6 for the SDSS photometric (with an effective area 8000 deg$^2$) and spectroscopic (with an effective area 5000 deg$^2$) quasar samples respectively in the LCDM0 model; the predicted numbers of large-separation lensed quasars agree well with the observations. These numbers are reduced by a factor of 7 or more in the WMAP3 model, and are consistent with data at < 8% level. The predicted cluster lens redshift peaks around redshift 0.5, and 90% are between 0.3 and 1. We find that the BCG creates a central circular region, comparable to the Einstein ring of the BCG, where the central image disappears in the usual three-image and five-image configurations. If we include four image systems as an extreme case of five-image systems (with an infinitely demagnified central image), we find that 68% of the central images are fainter by a factor of 100 than the brightest image, and about 80% are within 1.5"of the BCG., Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures

We use high-resolution $N$-body simulations to investigate the optical depth of giant arcs with length-to-width ratio larger than 7.5 and 10 in the `standard' $\LCDM$ model with $\sigma_8=0.9$ and $\Omega_{\rm m,0}=0.3$ and a model based on three-year Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) data. We find that, in dark-matter only simulations, the lensing probability in the three-year WMAP model (with $\sigma_8=0.74$ and $\Omega_{\rm m,0}=0.238)$ decreases by a factor of $\sim 6$ compared with that in the `standard' $\LCDM$ model. The effects of baryonic cooling, star formation and feedbacks are uncertain, but we argue that baryons will only increase the the lensing cross-section by a moderate factor, $\sim 2$. We conclude that the low central value of $\sigma_8$ and $\Omega_{\rm m,0}$ preferred by the WMAP three-year data may be too low to be compatible with observations if conventional assumptions of the background source population are correct., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, 1 table, accepted by MNRAS letters

We solve the $A_{2n}^{(2)}$ vertex model with all kinds of diagonal reflecting matrices by using the algebraic Behe ansatz, which includes constructing the multi-particle states and achieving the eigenvalue of the transfer matrix and corresponding Bethe ansatz equations. When the model is $U_q(B_n)$ quantum invariant, our conclusion agrees with that obtained by analytic Bethe ansatz method., Comment: 24 pages, no figures

We use high-resolution N-body simulations to study the galaxy-cluster cross-sections and the abundance of giant arcs in the $\Lambda$CDM model. Clusters are selected from the simulations using the friends-of-friends method, and their cross-sections for forming giant arcs are analyzed. The background sources are assumed to follow a uniform ellipticity distribution from 0 to 0.5 and to have an area identical to a circular source with diameter $1\arcsec$. We find that the optical depth scales as the source redshift approximately as $\tau_{1''} = 2.25 \times 10^{-6}/[1+(\zs/3.14)^{-3.42}]$ ($0.6<\zs<7$). The amplitude is about 50% higher for an effective source diameter of $0.5\arcsec$. The optimal lens redshift for giant arcs with the length-to-width ratio ($L/W$) larger than 10 increases from 0.3 for $\zs=1$, to 0.5 for $\zs=2$, and to 0.7-0.8 for $\zs>3$. The optical depth is sensitive to the source redshift, in qualitative agreement with Wambsganss et al. (2004). However, our overall optical depth appears to be only $\sim$ 10% to 70% of those from previous studies. The differences can be mostly explained by different power spectrum normalizations ($\sigma_8$) used and different ways of determining the $L/W$ ratio. Finite source size and ellipticity have modest effects on the optical depth. We also found that the number of highly magnified (with magnification $|\mu|>10$) and ``undistorted'' images (with $L/W<3$) is comparable to the number of giant arcs with $|\mu|>10$ and $L/W>10$. We conclude that our predicted rate of giant arcs may be lower than the observed rate, although the precise `discrepancy' is still unclear due to uncertainties both in theory and observations., Comment: Revised version after the referee's reports (32 pages,13figures). The leading nonperturbative QCD corrections to the one gluon exchange quark-quark, quark-antiquark and $q \bar{q}$ pair-excitation potentials are derived by using a covariant form of nonlocal two-quark and two-gluon vacuum expectation values.
