13. Chemical and Physical Characterization of Three Oxidic Lithological Materials for Water Treatment.

Abstract

Water treatment necessitates the sustainable use of natural resources. This paper focuses on the characterization of three oxidic lithological materials (OLMs) with the aim of utilizing them to prepare calcined adsorbent substrates for ionic adsorption. The three materials have pH levels of 7.66, 4.63, and 6.57, respectively, and organic matter contents less than 0.5%. All of the materials are sandy loam or loamy sand. Their electric conductivities (0.18, 0.07, and 0.23 dS/m) show low levels of salinity and solubility. Their CEC (13.40, 13.77, and 6.76 cmol(+)kg) values are low, similar to those of amphoteric oxides and kaolin clays. Their aluminum contents range from 7% up to 12%, their iron contents range from 3% up to 7%, their titanium contents range from 0.3% to 0.63%, and their manganese contents range from 0.007% up to 0.033%. The amphoteric oxides of these metals are responsible for their ionic adsorption reactions due to their variable charge surfaces. Their zirconium concentrations range from 100 to 600 mg/g, giving these materials the refractory properties necessary for the preparation of calcined adsorbent substrates. Our XRD analysis shows they share a common mineralogical composition, with quartz as the principal component, as well as albite, which leads to their thermal properties and mechanical resistance against abrasion. The TDA and IR spectra show the presence of kaolinite, which is lost during thermal treatments. The results show that the OLMs might have potential as raw materials to prepare calcined adsorbent substrates for further applications and as granular media in the sustainable treatment of both natural water and wastewater. Abstract

The illegal burning of solid waste in residential stoves is an existing practice, but until now it has been completely disregarded as an emission source of atmospheric pollutants in many developed countries, including those in eastern Europe. Various types of solid waste (plastics, treated wood, plyboards, tyre, rag) serve as an auxiliary fuel in many households, in particular during the heating season. In this work, for the first time ever in atmospheric pollution studies, specific tracer compounds identified previously in controlled test burnings of different waste types in the laboratory were detected and quantified in ambient PM10 samples collected in five Hungarian and four Romanian settlements. Using the identified tracers and their experimentally determined relative emission factors, the potential contribution of illegal waste burning emissions to ambient PM10 mass concentrations was assessed. Our findings implied that the burning of polyethylene terephthalate (PET)-containing waste (food and beverage packaging, clothes) was predominant at all the locations, especially in north-eastern Hungary and Romania. There is substantial evidence that the burning of scrap furniture is also common in big cities in Hungary and Romania. Back-of-the-envelope calculations based on the relative emission factors of individual tracers suggested that the contribution of solid waste burning particulate emissions to ambient PM10 mass concentrations may be as high as a few percent. This finding, when considering the extreme health hazards associated with particulate emissions from waste burning, is a matter of serious public health concern. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

38. MEASURING CATALASE ACTIVITY IN LI TREATED AQUATIC PLANT TISSUES.

Abstract

Living organism’s metabolism can respond to environmental stress through their antioxidant system. The catalase enzyme regulates the H2O2 levels protecting the cells against oxidative damage caused by abiotic stress. Lemna minor are ideal test plants for the detection of metal pollution. Therefore, in the present study Lemna minor plant tissue exposed to various lithium concentrations (CLi = 0, 1, 3, 5 mg/L) was used to assess the changes in the catalase enzyme activity. Moreover, a quantification method for Catalase antioxidant activity using a nano UV-Vis spectrophotometer determination was developed. It was observed that high lithium concentrations (5 mg/L) can negatively affect the catalase enzyme activity, decreasing the activity by 71% compared with the control plants (CLi = 0 mg/L). It has been shown that quantification of the catalase enzyme activity can be successfully used as an important signalling biomarker to the induced lithium stress. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
