Animal-based foods have a large impact on the environment; for this reason, plant-based meat analogous are now in the spotlight. Although protein concentrates/isolates from soy are the most used raw materials for meat analogues, some concerns about allergenicity, loss of biodiversity, and low sustainability of their production rise from their uses. In this context, high protein fractions obtained by air classification of pulse flours are here proposed as substitutes of protein concentrates. Thus, this work is aimed at understanding the aptitude of high protein fraction from pulses to be transformed into meat analogous through high moisture extrusion process. Differences in functional and rheological properties among high protein fractions resulted in different high moisture extrusion properties and thus products with different appearance. Specifically, the foaming capacity of high protein fraction from red lentil resulted in expansion at the end of the extruder creating a heterogeneous structure, whereas the high lipid content of high protein fraction from chickpea can account for the unsuitability of this raw material to high moisture extrusion. On the contrary, high protein fraction from both fava bean and yellow pea presented a fibrous structure. Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L.) improvement is necessary to increase its contribution to food and nutrition security in the impoverished regions such as the Sub-Saharan African Region. Genetic variability is fundamental to selecting parental genetic resources with agronomic and economic important traits for recombination. Gamma radiation is one of the valuable mutagens for creating novel mutant populations with allelic combinations needed to develop varieties with the desired traits. In this study, we determined the optimum dosage of gamma irradiation to use in breeding programs to enhance high yield and tolerance to field pests, including Maruca pod borers (Maruca vitrata) in locally adapted cowpea varieties. Seeds of two locally adapted cowpea genotypes (NkR1P3 and NamCp201) were treated with six gamma irradiation doses - 0 (un-irradiated), 75, 150, 300, 450, and 600 Gy. Consequently, the radio-sensitivity test was conducted in seed trays under net house conditions at the experimental field of Ogongo Campus, University of Namibia, Namibia. The study was arranged in a completely randomized design with three replications. Significant interactions (p < 0.001) of genotype and gamma irradiation dosage were found on percentage emergence (%E) and seedling survival percentage (%SS). This revealed that optimum gamma irradiation doses for tested cowpea genotypes where genotypic and dose depended. The significant effect (p < 0.001) of dose on all tested traits revealed the need to identify highly responsive traits for large-scale mutagenesis. Seedling survival rate and shoot length were the most responsive and were consequently used to determine the optimum dose for mutagenesis. The optimum dosage of gamma radiation for genotypes NkR1P3 and NamCp201 ranged between 382 and 427 Gy and 324 and 335 Gy, respectively. The systematic identification of insertion/deletion (InDel) length polymorphisms from the entire lentil genome can be used to map the quantitative trait loci (QTL) and also for the marker-assisted selection (MAS) for various linked traits. The InDels were identified by comparing the whole-genome resequencing (WGRS) data of two extreme bulks (early- and late-flowering bulk) and a parental genotype (Globe Mutant) of lentil. The bulks were made by pooling 20 extreme recombinant inbred lines (RILs) each, derived by crossing Globe Mutant (late flowering parent) with L4775 (early flowering parent). Finally, 734,716 novel InDels were identified, which is nearly one InDel per 5,096 bp of lentil genome. Furthermore, 74.94% of InDels were within the intergenic region and 99.45% displayed modifier effects. Of these, 15,732 had insertions or deletions of 20 bp or more, making them amenable to the development of PCR-based markers. An InDel marker I-SP-356.6 (chr. 3; position 356,687,623; positioned 174.5 Kb from the LcFRI gene) was identified as having a phenotypic variance explained (PVE) value of 47.7% for earliness when validated in a RIL population. Thus, I-SP-356.6 marker can be deployed in MAS to facilitate the transfer of the earliness trait to other elite late-maturing cultivars. Two InDel markers viz., I-SP-356.6 and I-SP-383.9 (chr. 3; linked to LcELF3a gene) when tested in 9 lentil genotypes differing for maturity duration, clearly distinguished three early (L4775, ILL7663, Precoz) and four late genotypes (Globe Mutant, MFX, L4602, L830). However, these InDels could not be validated in two genotypes (L4717, L4727), suggesting either absence of polymorphism and/or presence of other loci causing earliness. Lentil is one of the most important legumes cultivated in various provinces of Iran. However, there is limited information about the symbiotic rhizobia of lentils in this country. In this study, molecular identification of lentil-nodulating rhizobia was performed based on 16S–23S rRNA intergenic spacer (IGS) and recA, atpD, glnII , and nodC gene sequencing. Using PCR-RFLP analysis of 16S–23S rRNA IGS, a total of 116 rhizobia isolates were classified into 20 groups, leaving seven strains unclustered. Phylogenetic analysis of representative isolates revealed that the rhizobia strains belonged to Rhizobium leguminosarum and Rhizobium laguerreae , and the distribution of the species is partially related to geographical location. Rhizobium leguminosarum was the dominant species in North Khorasan and Zanjan, while R. laguerreae prevailed in Ardabil and East Azerbaijan. The distribution of the species was also influenced by agroecological climates; R. leguminosarum thrived in cold semiarid climates, whereas R. laguerreae adapted to humid continental climates. Both species exhibited equal dominance in the Mediterranean climate, characterized by warm, dry summers and mild, wet winters, in Lorestan and Kohgiluyeh-Boyer Ahmad provinces. To provide an updated summary of recent advances in the application of gamma irradiation to elicit secondary metabolism and for induction of mutations in plant cell and organ cultures for the production of industrially important specialized metabolites (SMs). Research on the application of gamma radiation with plants has contributed a lot to microbial decontamination of seeds, and the promotion of physiological processes such as seed germination, seedling vigor, plant growth, and development. Various studies have demonstrated the influence of gamma rays on the morphology, physiology, and biochemistry of plants. Recent research efforts have also shown that low-dose gamma (5–100 Gy) irradiation can be utilized as an expedient solution to alleviate the deleterious effect of abiotic stresses and to obtain better yields of plants. Inducing mutagenesis using gamma irradiation has also evolved as a better option for inducing genetic variability in crops, vegetables, medicinal and ornamentals for their genetic improvement. Plant SMs are gaining increasing importance as pharmaceutical, therapeutic, cosmetic, and agricultural products. Plant cell, tissue, and organ cultures represent an attractive alternative to conventional methods of procuring useful SMs. Among the varied approaches the elicitor-induced in vitro culture techniques are considered an efficient tool for studying and improving the production of SMs. This review focuses on the utilization of low-dose gamma irradiation in the production of high-value SMs such as phenolics, terpenoids, and alkaloids. The legume crop, lentil is often found to be contaminated with arsenic (As) across the globe, and becomes a serious problem when consumed as dietary component. Bioremediation techniques are considered to be sustainable, and low cost measures to combat this problem. The current study has been aimed at identifying the As-resistant endophytic bacteria from the root nodule of lentil plants grown in As-contaminated soil, assess their capacity to tolerate As, and establish their contribution in plant growth promotion. Four As-resistant endophytic bacteria were isolated from the lentil nodules in the contaminated (17.1 and 1.54 mg kg−1 of total and available As) field (Uttar Panchponta, Nadia, West Bengal, India located at 23° 05′ N and 88° 54′ E). The results showed that among all isolates, ARGNCAR-1 exhibits the highest As resistant capacity (200.0 mM for arsenate and 21.0 mM for arsenite). Interestingly, the ARGNCAR-1(Acinetobacter calcoaceticus , KX882106) is also able to solubilize phosphate (8.59-8.6 µg mL−1 under arsenate stress and 8.0-8.1 µg mL−1 under arsenite stress) and produce significant amount of indole acetic acid (10.2-10.4 µg mL−1 under the arsenate stress and 9.4-9.5 µg mL−1 under arsenite stress). The presence of aoxB gene was detected in these four As (III) oxidizing isolates. A pot experiment was conducted with the contaminated soil and the isolated strains were inoculated. The strain ARGNCAR-1 was found to be the most efficient in reducing about 20% As from soil and 22% As from the lentil seeds and ensured significant plant yield enhancement (5.17 g plant−1) than uninoculated soil (4.54 g plant−1) mainly through their corresponding increase in pod plant−1 (110) and biomass (6.51 g plant−1). Considering the efficacy of curbing As load as well as improving plant growth, the ARGNCAR-1(Acinetobacter calcoaceticus KX882106) emerged as one of the most promising candidates in As contaminated belts. Pulses are edible seeds belonging to the Leguminosae family for human consumption and consist of various species such as common beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), peas (Pisum sativum), lentils (Lens culinaris), chickpeas (Cicer arietinum L.), and faba beans (Vicia faba). Pulses are sustainable sources of nutritional compounds, especially containing almost twice the protein content compared to cereal grains. In addition to becoming an excellent source of macronutrients and micronutrients, they are abundant in phytochemicals, containing bioactive compounds with potential health benefits resulting from various phenolic compounds, as well as antinutritional compounds (e.g. phytic acid, enzyme inhibitors, lectins, saponins), which have received widespread concern by researchers. More essentially, various processing approaches for consumption purposes will result not only in enhanced nutritional and sensory characteristics in pulses but also in affected phytochemicals contents and their bioavailability. In this review, the nutritional and phytochemical compositions of pulses will be first introduced, followed by different common-applied processing methods (thermal and non-thermal), along with their impacts and pulse storage effects on the content of corresponding phytochemicals. Furthermore, through food processing and digestion, the bioaccessibility and bioavailability of pulse phytochemicals will be improved, thus releasing more health benefits, and expressing pharmacological functions in the human body. COVID-19 is an infectious disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Glycoprotein clusterin (CLU) has many functions such as phagocyte recruitment, complement system inhibition, apoptosis inhibition, hormone and lipid transport, as well as in the immune response. The study aimed to assess the changes in CLU concentrations and the profile and degree of CLU glycosylation between patients with severe COVID-19, convalescents, and healthy subjects (control). The profile and degree of serum CLU N-glycosylation were analyzed using lectin-ELISA with specific lectins. CLU concentrations were significantly lower and relative reactivities of CLU glycans with SNA (Sambucus nigra agglutinin) were significantly higher in severe COVID-19 patients in comparison to convalescents and the control group. The relative reactivities of CLU glycans with MAA (Maackia amurensis agglutinin), together with relative reactivity with LCA (Lens culinaris agglutinin), were also significantly higher in patients with severe COVID-19 than in convalescents and the control group, but they also significantly differed between convalescents and control. The development of acute inflammation in the course of severe COVID-19 is associated with a decrease in CLU concentration, accompanied by an increase in the expression of α2,3-linked sialic acid, and core fucose. Both of these parameters can be included as useful glycomarkers differentiating patients with severe COVID-19 from convalescents and the control group, as well as convalescents and healthy subjects. The objective of the study was to investigate the effects of sole applications of biofertilizers and phosphorus as well as their integrated use in lentil. The field experiment was conducted to study the effect of phosphorus (0, 15, 20 and 25 kg P2O5 ha−1) and biofertilizer inoculation treatments [uninoculated control, Mesorhizobium, Mesorhizobium + RB-1 (Pseudomonas argentinensis) and Mesorhizobium + RB-2 (Bacillus aryabhattai)] on nutrient uptake, nutrient use efficiency and residual nutrient status of soil after the harvest of chickpea. Mesorhizobium + RB-1 recorded the highest uptake of nitrogen (73.7, 59.0 and 132.7 kg ha−1 in grain, straw and total, respectively), phosphorus (8.29, 11.34 and 19.63 kg ha−1 in grain, straw and total) and potassium (23.48, 43.36 and 66.84 kg ha−1 in grain, straw and total) as well as partial factor productivity (113.1 kg grain kg−1 P2O5). Application of 25 kg P2O5 ha−1 recorded the highest phosphorus concentration (0.39% in grain and 0.26% in straw), phosphorus uptake (8.35, 12.32 and 20.67 kg ha−1 in grain, straw and total, respectively) and phosphorus status in soil after crop harvest (18.7 and 16.7 kg P ha−1 in 0–15 and 15–30 cm soil layers, respectively). Partial factor productivity was recorded the highest with the application of 15 kg P2O5 ha−1 (132.2 kg grain kg−1 P2O5). It can be concluded that dual applications of biofertilizers [Mesorhizobium + RB-1 (Pseudomonas argentinensis)] and 25 kg P2O5 ha−1 improve nutrient uptake by the crop and build up of nutrients in the soil after the harvest of the crop. Health implications for the population due to consuming contaminated crops have been a great concern worldwide. This study aimed to measure the levels of potential toxic elements in lentils and their growing soil in Dawunt Woreda, Ethiopia. Accordingly, 15 soil samples along with the lentil samples were collected to measure the level of potential toxic elements, including chromium (Cr), manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), and cobalt (Co), by using an inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer and for assessing the potential ecological and human health risk. The wet digestion method using aqua regia (HCl/HNO3 3 : 1) was employed for soil and lentil sample preparation. The mean concentrations of Fe, Mn, Co, Cu, Cd, Pb, and Cr in the lentil sample were 60.4, 9.68, 0.75, 5.7, 0.25, 0.9, and 1.15 mg/kg, respectively. In soil, the mean concentrations of Fe, Mn, Co, Cu, Cd, Pb, and Cr were 649, 19.9, 3.32, 40.0, 15.2, 1.83, and 69.1 mg/kg, respectively. All of the potential toxic metals in agricultural soil and lentil samples were found to be below the reference level set by the World Health Organization, except Cd, in the soil samples. Five single metal and three cumulative pollution index parameters were employed for the data and results showed that Fe, Cu, and Cr moderately pollute the soil and are highly contaminated by Cd. The cumulative pollution indices also confirmed that the extent of soil pollution varied from highly contaminated to moderate contamination. The possible health risks at various exposure routes have also been estimated. The single-metal and cumulative-metals health risks (cancer and noncancer) of adults and children due to chronic exposure to soil and consumption of lentils were estimated using the health quotient and health index values as per the United States Environmental Protection Agency guidelines. Thus, the results revealed no significant adverse health risks (cancer and noncancer) for adults and children. Background: Stemphylium blight incited by Stemphylium botryosum poses a significant threat to lentil crops worldwide, inducing severe defoliation and causing substantial yield losses in susceptible varieties under favorable conditions. While some moderate levels of resistance have been identified within lentil germplasm, a low number of resistant cultivars are available to farmers. Adding to the common constraints of resistance breeding, a notable challenge is generating a sufficient number of spores for large-scale screenings, which are essential for pinpointing additional sources of resistance for integration into breeding programs. Therefore, there is a pressing need to improve existing screening methods and tailor them for large-scale material selection. In pursuit of this objective, a protocol for the efficient production of fungal material has been adapted. Results: Optimization of fungal material production was successfully achieved by comparing the use of fungal mycelia and spores. Spore production was found to be optimal when produced on solid V8-PDA(hi) medium, while liquid Richard's medium was identified as superior for mycelium yield. Furthermore, a refined screening method was developed by evaluating the resistance of six lentil accessions to stemphylium blight. This assessment included the use of either fungal mycelia (at densities ranging from 1 to 5 g L− 1) or spores (with densities ranging from 5 × 104 to 2 × 105 conidia mL− 1) under three different relative humidity levels (from 50 to 100%). Both humidity levels and inoculum dose significantly influenced the final disease rating (DR) and the relative Area Under the Disease Progress Curve (rAUDPC). Differences among genotypes in final symptom severity (DR) became more pronounced after inoculation with inoculum densities of 5 g L− 1 of mycelium or of 105 and 2 × 105 conidia mL− 1 of spore under 100% relative humidity. Given the challenges associated with the large-scale production of S. botryosum spores, inoculations with 5 g L− 1 of mycelium is highly recommended as a practical alternative for conducting mass-scale screenings. Conclusions: The findings from this study underscore the critical importance of maintaining high level of humidity during inoculation and disease progression development for accurately assessing resistance to stemphylium blight. The optimization of mycelial production for suspension inoculation emerges as a more reliable and efficient approach for conducting large-scale screening to assess germplasm resistance against stemphylium blight in lentil crops. In the face of climate change, developing resilient crops is crucial for global food security in the 21st century to feed a growing population. Lentil (Lens culinaris Medikus) plays a vital role in ensuring global food and nutritional security. Traits like early flowering enable the crop to mature faster, thereby shortening the growing window and reducing yield losses caused by moisture and heat stresses during the reproductive phase. However, issues like limited genetic diversity in this trait remain unaddressed. To address this gap, our study aims to comprehensively assess genetic variability and trait associations in 158 lentil accessions. In the present study, we observed significant variations for days to 50% flowering (67–90 days), days to maturity (109–122 days) and 100 seed weight (1.69–2.68 g) throughout a period of two consecutive years (2020–2021 and 2021–2022). The observed variability in these traits offers a valuable avenue for the improvement of lentil yield through targeted selection and hybridization. Additionally, correlation analysis showed negative correlation between days to 50% flowering and grain yield per plant, while plant height had a significant (P < 0.01) positive correlation with all traits except yield per plant. Furthermore, we identified specific germplasm with exceptional traits that hold significant potential for future breeding programmes. The genotypes EC 223197-A and EC 267696 were identified for early flowering with high yield, and other genotypes that were identified for various traits would serve as breeding material for the introgression of these traits into elite cultivars. Background: Lectins are carbohydrate binding proteins which perform diverse roles in plants. One important role is in plant defense. These proteins hold great potential as entomotoxic proteins as a part of integrated pest management. Methods: Lectins were purified and characterized from seeds of two legumes, Glycine max-Soybean and Lens culinaris-Lentil, employing ammonium sulfate fractionation and ion exchange chromatography. Bioefficacy of the purified lectins was evaluated against mustard aphid. Result: Lectins isolated from seeds of soybean (Glycine max agglutinin GMA-I, II) and lentil (Lens culinaris agglutinin LCA-I) were purified upto 9.30 (GMA-I), 4.60 (GMA-II) and 8.70 (LCA-I) fold, respectively. Lectin characterization revealed that soybean agglutinin and lentil agglutinin were specific towards D-Galactose and D-mannose, respectively. Insect bioassay was carried out with five different concentrations (10, 20, 30, 40, 50 µg/ml) of purified lectins of soybean and lentil against mustard aphid. The lethal concentration LC50 value for GMA-I was obtained as 32.1 µg/ml with a 95% confidential interval of 18.2 to 40.5 µg/ml and that of LCA-I was 19.1 µg/ml with a 95% confidential interval of 9.3 to 26.8 µg/ml. Lentil (Lens culinaris Medik.) production faces challenges due to shifting environmental conditions, potentially leading to a transition towards cooler or highland Mediterranean environments. This study assessed the responses of five lentil genotypes across five diverse locations (L1–L5) managed under organic cropping systems over two seasons, focusing on key parameters including seed yield (SY), crude protein (CP), cooking time (CT), seed loss percentage (SL), and yield loss per hectare (YL) caused by bruchid (Bruchus sp.). Excessive seasonal rainfall (500 mm), low winter temperatures (−17.9 °C), bruchid SL, and spring sowing were identified as crucial, particularly in challenging environments like highlands. Genotype selection was highlighted as essential for balancing yield and stability, with the small-seeded cultivar 'Dimitra' demonstrating lower YL due to bruchid. Additionally, increased CP was noted in response to heightened bruchid infestations. Specific recommendations were proposed for different environments: In productive lowland areas with low bruchid pressure and high CTs (L1), prioritizing cultivars like 'Samos', 'Dimitra', and 'Thessalia' enhances quality. Locations with high bruchid populations (L4) were not favored organic production but can serve as genetic resistance screening sites. High-elevation environments (L3, L5) proved significantly less productive, underscoring the requirement for earlier and winter-hardy cultivars. The biochemistry underlying seed coat darkening of lentil due to extended storage is limited. This study investigated the relationship between seed coat darkening over time during storage and changes in concentration of phenolic compounds (total phenolic compounds, total condensed tannins, proanthocyanidins and anthocyanins) in two red lentil cultivars (PBA Hallmark and PBA Jumbo2), stored at two grain moisture contents (10 and 14%, w/w) and two temperatures (4 and 35 °C) for 360 days. Seed coat darkening was only significant (p = 0.05) at high temperatures (35 °C) but not at low temperatures (4 °C), irrespective of grain moisture content and cultivar. The concentration of all phenolic compounds tested in this study reduced significantly (p = 0.05) throughout the study period, regardless of temperature and grain moisture treatments. The changes in seed coat brightness and redness followed a linear pattern, except for yellowness, where phenolic compounds initially reduced linearly and then remained constant thereafter. Darkening of seedcoat was only associated with the reduction in phenolic compounds tested in this study at 35 °C, and not at 4 °C. This suggests that seed coat darkening due to extended storage may not be directly linked to broad reductions in the groups of phenolic compounds or individual compounds assessed in this study. This information prompts further research to identify the actual biochemical processes that cause the darkening of seed coats during storage and assist in developing cultivars with stable seed coat colour by selecting and modifying such processes. Natural compounds like flavonoids preserve intestinal mucosal integrity through their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties. Additionally, some flavonoids show prebiotic abilities, promoting the growth and activity of beneficial gut bacteria. This study investigates the protective impact of Lens culinaris extract (LE), which is abundant in flavonoids, on intestinal mucosal integrity during LPS-induced inflammation. Using Caco-2 cells as a model for the intestinal barrier, the study found that LE did not affect cell viability but played a cytoprotective role in the presence of LPS. LE improved transepithelial electrical resistance (TEER) and tight junction (TJ) protein levels, which are crucial for barrier integrity. It also countered the upregulation of pro-inflammatory genes TRPA1 and TRPV1 induced by LPS and reduced pro-inflammatory markers like TNF-α, NF-κB, IL-1β, and IL-8. Moreover, LE reversed the LPS-induced upregulation of AQP8 and TLR-4 expression. Lentil protein hydrolysates (LPH) and lentil protein hydrolysates cross‐linked (LPHC) were grafted with gum Arabic (GA) through a wet Maillard reaction at 100°C for 2 h and called MLPH and MLPHC. The samples were assessed for absorption, degree of grafting (DG), surface hydrophobicity, antioxidant activity, molecular weight (MW) profile, chemical alteration, volatile compounds, functional and sensory properties. Results showed that Maillard grafting led to increase in absorption and DG (maximum value: MLPHC), and led to the reduction of the surface hydrophobicity and antioxidant activity (minimum value: MLPHC). MW profiles indicated that MLPH and MLPHC formed new bands at MW >250 kDa. Regarding the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Maillard conjugation led to the occurrence of peaks at 1759 and 1765 cm−1, while the intensities of amide I bands at 1637 and 1659 cm−1 and amide II bands at 1498 and 1495 cm−1 were decreased. Hydrolysis, cross‐linking, and especially Maillard grafting provided well‐balanced content of volatile components. Indeed, the proportions of alcohols, ketones, aldehydes, and acids were changed, thereby, the inherent grassy and planty tastes were diminished while new umami taste was developed. Maillard grafting led to significant improvement of functional properties, while MLPH and MLPHC indicated the highest emulsifying activity at pH 10.0 (73.76 and 70.12 m2/g, respectively) and stability (369.64 and 288.22 min), foaming capacity (88.57% and 142.86%) and stability (60.57% and 72%). Sensory analysis has demonstrated that umami taste was highly developed in MLPH and MLPHC, which can be well considered as meat proteins and flavor enhancers such as monosodium glutamate (MSG). Utilizing lentil protein as a novel ingredient for producing texturized vegetable proteins (TVPs) can provide new opportunities for the production of next‐generation hybrid meat products. TVPs from lentil protein isolate were manufactured using low‐moisture extrusion cooking at different combinations of screw speed (SS), feed moisture content (MC), and barrel temperature (BT) profile. In total, seven different combinations of processing treatments were tested, and the resulting TVPs were characterized for their physical (rehydration ratio, texture profile analysis, color, and bulk density), techno‐functional (oil and water holding capacities), and microstructural properties. The processing conditions of higher SS and lower MC resulted in increased values of several textural profile attributes (springiness, cohesiveness, and resilience), increased water holding capacity (WHC), and decreased bulk density. Compared to raw lentil protein, TVPs showed enhanced oil holding capacity, though WHC either decreased or remained constant. The extrusion response parameters (die pressure, torque, and specific mechanical energy) showed positive correlations with several physical properties (texture, WHC, and total color change), revealing their potential for serving as important TVP quality indicators. TVPs produced at SS, MC, and BT of 450 rpm, 30%, and 140°C, respectively, showed relatively better overall physical and techno‐functional quality and can be used as meat extenders in hybrid meat patties. Pulse production is decreased when grown on waterlogged soil in rice‐based cropping. This study evaluated four pulse crops—grass pea, field pea, cowpea and lentil—to find out their responses to waterlogging (WL) stress at emergence and vegetative stages. The treatment levels at emergence were drained control, 4‐, 7‐ and 10‐day WL, while in the vegetative stage they were drained control, 6‐, 10‐ and 14‐day WL. In the emergence stage, %emergence was significantly reduced as WL duration increased. After 10‐day WL, emergence was reduced to 65% for grass pea, 30% for field pea, 5% for lentil and 7% for cowpea. At the vegetative stage, in both the WL and recovery phases, the WL treatment reduced plant height, tap root length, shoot and root dry mass compared to those in drained control with a significant difference in crops. In recovery as compared to the WL phase at 14‐day WL, the chlorophyll content was increased 15% in cowpea and 14% in grass pea but decreased in field pea (26%) and lentil (35%). Similarly, in the recovery phase at 14‐day WL, shoot relative growth rates (RGRs) of cowpea, grass pea, field pea and lentil were 20, 66, 10 and 5 mg plant−1 d−1; which were 66%, 70%, 8% and 14% of drained control, respectively. The RGR of root at 14‐day WL was also higher in cowpea and grass pea with the rate of 13.8 and 16 mg−1 plant−1 d−1, respectively; in sharp contrast to a reduction of −4.3 mg−1 plant−1 d−1 in field pea and −3.9 mg−1 plant−1 d−1 for lentil than drained control. Furthermore, the higher number of adventitious roots was found in cowpea (14) and grass (9) pea than in field pea (6) and lentil (4). Comparison between growth stages, grass pea was tolerant to WL in both stages. Cowpea was WL sensitive at emergence, but tolerant to vegetative stage. Field pea was moderately tolerant to emergence but was sensitive at vegetative stage. Lentil was sensitive at WL at both stages. The purpose of our study was to ensure that comparing the mineral content of the lentil and the amount of nutrients published by the world's leading organizations. The samples were randomly and subjectively selected from different retail outlets. Fifteen types of medium seed brown lentil from fifteen different distributors were obtained and analyzed for moisture, protein, Na, K, Ca, Mg, P, Fe, Cu, Zn, Mn, and S content. Descriptive statistics were done and for comparisons. Shapiro–Wilk test was first conducted to assess normality. When data followed a normal distribution, T-test was used, and when not, Wilcoxon signed rank test (P-values = 0.05). The results of the measurements were compared with data from several FAO/INFOODS food composition databases, as well as the Canadian National Food Composition Database, USDA Food Data Central, United Kingdom, Australian Food Composition Database, and Indian food composition tables. The evaluation of the measurement results showed significant differences (p = 0.05) in the amount of Na, K, Ca, Mg, P, Fe, and Cu compared to the amounts listed in the world's leading databases in most cases. Our results were also examined from a dietary perspective to determine if the differences had practical significance. The results of the Canadian samples were compared with the Canadian database, there was a significant difference amount of Na, K, Ca, Mg, P, Fe, Cu, and Mn. Chickpea is the world's second most widely grown pulse. This legume will become increasingly important due to its natural drought and heat tolerance ability, and its capacity to fix atmospheric N2 in symbiosis with rhizobia what makes this pulse a low-water and carbon fingerprint crop. The aim of this study was to assess the nutritional value, the mineral composition, and the phenolic compound profiles of ten Spanish chickpea genotypes. Seed morphological characteristics were also determined as useful traits for analyzing plant biodiversity. Most of these advanced lines and/or recombinant inbred lines (RILs) were derived from intraspecific crosses among kabuli-type chickpeas genotypes. The variety Kasin and two RILs, namely 5-RIL-33 and 5-RIL-92, shared the same parental lines, one of them from India (WR315) of desi type. Only one genotype (5-RIL-33) has colored grains and pink flowers (common desi-type traits). These three genotypes were resistant to both ascochyta blight [Ascochyta rabiei (Pass.) Labr] and Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. ciceris race 5. The protein content of all genotypes was higher than 20% with some outstanding lines having > 25%. Other functional components such as crude fat, fiber, and carbohydrates contents and minerals were broadly uniform across the studied material. The analysis of the phenolic compounds on methanolic seed extracts reveals common features as the presence of gentisic and 4-hydroybezoic acids, besides l-glutamic, citric, and succinic organic acids. In contrast, some compounds such as gallic acid, gallocatechin, and rutin are exclusively present in the colored 5-RIL-33 line, in addition to the reference Apulian black chickpea variety. Summary: The growing recognition of the health benefits associated with dietary fibre and the deficit in its daily intake are propelling the food industry to develop a variety of fibre‐enriched products including puffed snacks. Incorporating rich sources of fibre into pulse‐based foods can supplement the insufficient daily dietary fibre intake. To produce fibre‐enriched puffed pulse snacks and ready‐to‐eat breakfast cereals, three different fibre sources, namely carrot powder (CP), wheat bran (WB) and red lentil hulls (LH), were added to red lentil (RL) flour at 0%, 10% and 20% levels (w/w) and extruded at three extrusion moisture contents (MC), i.e., 18%, 20% and 22% (db). Incorporation of all three fibres into RL flour significantly (P ≤ 0.05) increased the total and insoluble dietary fibre contents and hardness and decreased the expansion index, brightness and crispiness of extrudates. Scanning electron microscopy images revealed that the fibre‐enriched extrudates had thicker cell walls with smaller cells when qualitatively compared to RL extrudates with no fibre addition. CP containing extrudates had significantly (P ≤ 0.05) higher soluble dietary fibre (SDF) content compared to extrudates containing WB and LH. WB containing extrudates were significantly (P ≤ 0.05) harder and less expanded than CP and LH containing extrudates at the same MC. The increase in fibre incorporation level increased the hardness of CP and WB containing extrudates but did not affect LH containing extrudates. Fibre incorporation level also increased the colour differences between RL extrudates with and without fibre enrichment. Increasing MC significantly (P ≤ 0.05) increased the SDF and hardness and decreased the expansion index of extrudates. These results can potentially pave the way for the production of fibre‐enriched pulse‐based puffed products, namely, snacks and ready‐to‐eat breakfast cereals, that are texturally and structurally appealing to consumers. The present investigation reports the development and characterization of a clay-polymer composite loaded with urea and Trichoderma harzianum (UTCPC) to enhance soil moisture and nitrogen availability and manage wilt-nematode complex in lentil grown in residual moisture after rainfed rice. The Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) characterization proved successful synthesis of UTCPC. The bentonite clay (8% w w−1) and Th concentration (10% w w−1) were optimized based on the maximum spore count of the UTCPC and viability of the Th spores at one month of storage at room temperature. The incubation and pot culture experiments were laid out in a completely randomized design (CRD) with six N levels replicated thrice in combinations with UTCPC. Under incubation experiment, the treatment of 100% N through farmyard manure (FYM) along with UTCPC application (T3) resulted in the highest soil moisture (18.5%) and lowest nitrate (NO3-N) content (42%) at 6 and 10 days after incubation, respectively, suggesting its sustained moisture-retaining and slow nitrate (NO3-N) release properties of the UTCPC. Under pot experiment, the treatment T3 expressed the highest soil moisture (28.8%) and NO3-N (17.6 kg ha−1) content even at 60 days after sowing. The disease severity index of all the treatments comprising UTCPC with or without nutrient application was significantly lower than the untreated soil. The lowest population of Fusarium spp. (13.8%) and Meloidogyne spp. (8%) were observed in T3. Therefore, UTCPC can be considered as an eco-friendly agri-input in enhancing moisture retention and sustaining nutrient release to the soil as well as providing biocontrol agents to manage Fusarium-Meloidogyne complex in lentil. PURPOSE: The gender, age, lens culinaris agglutinin-reactive fraction of alphafetoprotein, alphafetoprotein, des-gamma-carboxyprothrombin (GALAD) score is a biomarker-based statistical model for the serologic diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) that has been developed and validated using the case-control approach with a view to early detection. Performance has, however, been suboptimal in the first prospective studies which better reflect the real-world situation. In this article, we report the application of machine learning to a large, prospectively accrued, HCC surveillance data set. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Models were built on a cohort of 3,473 patients with chronic liver disease within a rigorous surveillance program between 1998 and 2014, during which 459 patients with HCC were detected. Two random forest (RF) models were trained. The first RF model uses the same variables as the original GALAD model (GALAD-RF); the second is based on routinely available clinical and laboratory features (RF-practical). For comparison, we evaluated a logistic regression GALAD model trained on this longitudinal prospective data set (termed GALAD-Ogaki). RESULTS: Models were evaluated using a repetitive cross-validation approach with the metrics averaged over 100 independent runs. As judged by area under the receiver operator curve (AUROC) and F1 score, the GALAD RF model significantly outperformed the original GALAD model. The RF-practical model also outperformed the original GALAD model in terms of both AUROC and F1 score, and both models outperformed the individual biomarkers. An online web application that implemented the GALAD-RF and RF-practical models is presented. CONCLUSION: RF-based models improve on the diagnostic performance of the original GALAD model in the setting of a standard HCC surveillance program. Further prospective validation studies are warranted using these models and could be expanded to offer prediction of risk of HCC development over defined periods of time. A field experiment on the effect of zinc and molybdenum application on the yield of lentil was carried out at The University of Agriculture Peshawar during the Rabi season of 2021. The experiment was carried out in a randomised complete block design with three replications. Four levels of molybdenum (0, 1, 2 and 3 kg ha-1) and 0.5% zinc foliar spray at different intervals of lentil crop (control, 50 days after sowing, 100 days after sowing, 50 days after sowing + 100 days after sowing) were tested in the experiment. The results revealed that 3 kg ha-1 of molybdenum enhanced plant height (55 cm), nodules plant-1 (25), branches plant-1 (7), days to flowering (107) and maturity (159), dry matter of leaves at the flowering stage (64 g m-2), dry matter of leaves at the maturity stage (113 g m-2), dry matter of branches at the physiological maturity stage (304 g m-2), dry matter of pods at the maturity stage (439 g m-2), pods plant-1 (92), seeds pod-1 (2.0), 1000-seed weight (31 g), biological yield (3207 kg ha-1), and seed yield (1002 kg ha-1). Zinc foliar spray (0.5%) at 50 days after sowing + 100 days after sowing of lentil crop improved the dry matter of leaves at the flowering stage (62 g m-2), days to first flowering (109), days to physiological maturity (157), dry matter of leaves at the physiological maturity stage (111 g m-2), dry matter of pods at the physiological maturity stage (435 g m-2), pods plant-1 (91), 1000 seed weight (32 g), biological yield (3236 kg ha-1) and seed yield (1026 kg ha-1). Lastly, scatterplots revealed a significant correlation of grain and biological yield with their components. It is concluded that molybdenum application at a rate of 3 kg ha-1 and 0.5% zinc foliar spray at 50 days after sowing + 100 days after sowing of the lentil crop increased seed yield and is thus recommended for the Peshawar region. Background: From ancient times, lentil has been a prominent part of our diet. Nowadays, there is an emerging interest in lentil, as it is a potential food of plant origin having ample amount of nutrients, which contributes to numerous health benefits. Methods: The seeds of lentil (PL 8) were screened for visual impurity and deformity and sound seeds were selected for further analysis. The seeds were subjected to milling and the flour obtained was further used to analyze the physical parameters, nutritional quality, antinutrient content and cooking characteristics of the chosen variety. The impact of soaking on cooking quality was also observed. Result: It was observed that lentil (PL 8) seeds had higher content of protein, dietary fibre and anti oxidants. However, the antinutrient content as well as physical properties were comparable with the other varieties studied by various authors. Background: Stunt disease is becoming the major yield limiting factors for the chickpea production and its occurrence has been reported form different states of India. The symptoms of stunt disease caused by chickpea chlorotic dwarf virus are difficult to distinguish Mastrevirus-infected plant from other disease-causing pathogens. Therefore, it's an imperative for precise detection of causal agent of the disease for development of management strategy against chickpea stunt. Methods: Survey for the incidence of stunt disease with most characteristic symptoms of leaf reddening and yellow orange typical to Mastrevirus infection was conducted in chickpea fields. The causal agent of the stunt was characterized and described through conventional and virus-specific PCR-based diagnostic technique. Result: The study revealed that maximum of 60% of the chickpea stunt was observed in three districts of Uttar Pradesh with an average incidence of 12.90%. The PCR amplification using CpCDV-specific primers encoding coat protein resulted in an expected amplicon size of 350 bp. The comparison of the partial coat protein sequence of virus revealed that maximum homology of 98.70% with previously identified chickpea chlorotic dwarf virus (CpCDV) strains, indicating that CpCDV associated with the chickpea stunt. Based on molecular characterization, chickpea stunt disease caused by Chickpea chlorotic dwarf virus (ssDNA), belongs to the genus Mastrevirus which is also responsible for the lentil stunt disease. Background: Lentil is a vital nutritional source of protein in several parts of the world including India. The crop is susceptible to wilt which is a devastating soil-borne disease induced by the fungus Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lentis. Insight of the potential threat Fusarium wilt can pose to lentils, a present study done on pathogenicity, host range and influence of temperature, humidity and pH levels on the growth of F. oxysporum f. sp. lentis. Methods: Ten isolates FOL-01 to FOL-10 of F. oxysporum f. sp. lentis (Fol) were isolated from wilted lentil plants that collected from different major lentil growing parts of Rajasthan. During 2017-18 a pathogenicity test was tested in pot house condition by seed and soil inoculation techniques for all isolates and epidomological factors evaluated in vitro conditions. Result: Results indicated that the Fol isolates represent a single race but differ in their aggressiveness on the susceptible cultivar L9- 12. Pathogenicity test revealed clearly that Fol was associated with wilt symptoms and were pathogenic to lentil plants. A maximum percent disease incidence of 70.00 was showed by isolate FOL-02 in soil inoculation technique. In the morphological and cultural characterization, all the ten isolates showed various character in conidial frequency, colony color and growth pattern. Twenty plant species were tested to know the host range of Fol, out of these lentil, chickpea and pea show positive reaction with the pathogen. The influence of temperature, relative humidity and pH on the growth and sporulation of Fol was studied under in vitro conditions. Bundelkhand region of India is primarily agrarian, vulnerable to natural calamities with low levels of industrialization and urbanization. Poor crop productivity, declining and irregular rainfall pattern and poor income levels make livelihood uncertain in the region. Pulse crops assume a special significance to the farm economy in Bundelkhand region as well as daily diets of local habitants. Chickpea, lentil, field pea, urdbean, mungbean and pigeon pea are the major pulse crops cultivated in the region. Data from Department of economics and statistics, Department of Agriculture and Cooperation and Farmers Welfare, New Delhi and the studies on pulses development of Bundelkhand region of India were analyzed. Pulses account for 32% of total agriculture produce and occupy about 33.6% of gross cropped area in the region. However, decline in area coverage of pulses has been observed in the region, in contrast to overall increase in gross cropped area in the region. Calophyllum inophyllum L. has been used for many generations by Pacific Islanders because of its numerous health and aesthetic advantages. The leaves, stems, roots, fruits, flowers, and seeds of this plant contain significant phytochemicals, including flavonoids, coumarins, fatty acids, and xanthones, which have been shown to have wound healing, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antiaging, anti-arthritic, anti-cancer, anti-proliferative, anti-diabetic, anti-microbial, and anti-HIV effects. The chemical profiles and bioactive potential may vary due to different extraction techniques, plant parts, and geographical origins. Extraction is the essential first step in the analysis of bioactive compounds that leads to further separation, identification, and characterization. Conventional methods like maceration, Soxhlet, and percolation are often used to extract bioactive compounds from C. inophyllum. However, little study has been carried out on non-conventional methods such as pressured liquid extraction, supercritical fluid extraction (SFE), and ultrasound-assisted extraction. The SFE method can be used to extract bioactive compounds from C. inophyllum to retain their pharmacological properties for application in pharmaceutical and cosmetic products. Simple Summary: Several insects can infest alimentary pasta. Since the olfactory sense in insects plays an important role in locating food sources, the aim of this work was to investigate the responses of adult maize weevils, Sitophilus zeamais, to five commercially available categories of macaroni pasta made from cereals and/or legumes in an olfactometric arena. Maize weevil adults were more attracted to the pasta made of 100% of Triticum durum; the attractiveness strongly decreased when combining T. durum with Cicer arietimun or Lens esculenta. A preferential orientation of adult insects to pasta made of chickpeas or lentils was not observed. These results confirm the importance of volatile compounds in insect orientation towards suitable foods and oviposition substrates and provide useful practical information for the safer prevention of maize weevil pasta infestations. We compared the attractiveness of five commercially available Italian macaroni pastas of different shapes (penne, casarecce, and fusilli) made from cereals and/or legumes [100% Triticum durum; 100% Cicer arietinum; 100% Lens esculenta; 50% Triticum durum + 50% Cicer arietinum; 60% Triticum durum + 40% Lens esculenta] to adults of Sitophilus zeamais (L.). A multiple-choice walking bioassay showed that S. zeamais adults were more attracted to cereal than legume pastas. The modified Flit-Track M2 trap devices baited with pasta made with 100% T. durum captured an average of 61.4% of the adults released into the olfactometric arena after 7 days. Of the insects tested, pasta made with 100% C. arietinum trapped 3.8%, pasta made with 100% L. esculenta trapped 2.7%, pasta made with 50% T. durum + 50% C. arietinum trapped 4.3%, and pasta made with 60% T. durum + 40% L. esculenta trapped 4.2%. When individually compared, 79.6% of S. zeamais adults chose the Triticum durum pasta. Orientation to 100% Cicer pasta or 100% Lens pasta was not observed. In the choice test, only 37% and 25% were attracted to Triticum and Cicer pastas or Triticum and Lens pasta, respectively. Our results confirm that the low attractiveness of legume pasta is mainly due to the lack of attractant stimuli rather than the emission of repellent compounds. A comparative evaluation of grain legumes is essential for the effective planning of legume-based agricultural systems in a given environment. The goal of this work was to contrast the growth, translocation of assimilates, and grain yield of spring-planted common vetch (Vicia sativa L.), red pea (Lathyrus cicera L.), lentil (Lens culinaris Medik.), chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.), and field pea (Pisum sativa L.) under rainfed Mediterranean conditions. Two cultivars of each species were cultivated on a silty clay soil in northeastern Greece for 2 years (2014 and 2015) with contrasting rainfall patterns. Chickpea and field pea exhibited better early crop growth rate than any other legume. Species differences in assimilates availability prior to grain filling affected the remobilization of assimilates to seed, which increased by 45% for every kg ha−1 rise in early dry matter accumulation. Dry matter translocation efficiency varied from 9 to 51% depending on species and year. Red pea was the best option in terms of seed yield, regardless of the seasonal rainfall. Chickpea in the drier year (2015) and field pea in the wetter year (2014) produced seed yields that were comparable to that of red pea. Lentil and common vetch were generally less productive species in terms of seed yield. Species seed yield was associated with their ability to accumulate biomass either before podding (r = 0.52, P < 0.05) or at maturity (r = 0.51, P < 0.05), but not with harvest index or translocation of dry matter. Findings provide new knowledge regarding growth attributes and reallocation of assimilate in five legume species grown simultaneously in the same environment, which has never been studied before. In addition, results highlight that selecting species with enhanced early or final biomass potential as well as adopting cultural practices that promote biomass accumulation in the growing season appear to be effective management strategies for improving seed yield of the tested grain legumes under Mediterranean conditions. In the search for novel alternative protein sources, plant-based proteins are widely explored from a sustainable and ecological point of view. Duckweed (Lemna minor), also known as water lentil, is an aquatic plant with potential applications for human consumption due to its protein content and carbohydrate contents. Among all the conventional and novel protein extraction methods, the utilization of ultrasound has attracted the attention of scientists because of its effects on improving protein extraction and its functionalities. In this work, a Box–Behnken experimental design was proposed to optimize the alkaline extraction of protein from duckweed. In addition, an exploration of the effects of ultrasound on the morphological, structural, and functional properties of the extracted protein was also addressed. The optimal extraction parameters were a pH of 11.5 and an ultrasound amplitude and processing time of 60% and 20 min, respectively. These process conditions doubled the protein content extracted in comparison to the value from the initial duckweed sample. Furthermore, the application of ultrasound during the extraction of protein generated changes in the FTIR spectra, color, and structure of the duckweed protein, which resulted in improvements in its solubility, emulsifying properties, and foaming capacity. Summary: The root-knot nematode, Meloidogyne enterolobii , is an important pathogen of numerous crops, including the so-called pulses. Hence, it is necessary to identify genetic resistance, as it is the most efficient, cost-effective, and environmentally sound way to manage nematodes in the field. The objective of this study was to screen a Brazilian germplasm collection of pulse crops (peas, chickpeas, and lentils) comprising accessions from the Embrapa Germplasm Bank and commercial cultivars against M. enterolobii under glasshouse conditions. The experiment was conducted with 23 treatments (genotypes), i.e., 14 pea, six chickpea and one lentil genotype, and two tomato cultivars, 'Rutgers' (susceptible) and 'Nemadoro' (resistant). Each plant (replication) was inoculated with 5000 eggs and second-stage juveniles (J2) of M. enterolobii and evaluated 65 days after inoculation, considering the following variables: gall index, egg mass index, number of eggs per g of roots, and reproduction factor. The experiments were conducted at two independent time points (summer and autumn/winter). Results showed that all 23 plant genotypes were susceptible to the nematode, with pea genotype 'Itapuã' being intolerant to infection. Cultivation of pulse crops has been steadily increasing both in Brazil and worldwide. Our research findings make a valuable contribution to the ongoing efforts to identify genetic resistance to nematode pathogens that can significantly affect the productivity of these crops. Background: Oily skin is a common concern in the field of dermatology due to its association with excessive sebum production, acne, blackheads, and enlarged facial pores. Therefore, it is in great demand to develop effective cosmetics to manage oily skin. Objectives: To evaluate the clinical efficacy of a novel emulsion containing niacinamide, lens esculenta seed extract, and white willow bark extract for oily skin. Methods: The efficacy of a novel emulsion was evaluated through a 56‐day clinical trial. The clinical efficacy of the product to ameliorate acne, blackheads, and conspicuous facial pores was assessed on 30 subjects with oily skin by VISIA, PRIMOS, professional dermatologist evaluations, and subject self‐assessment. Results: In the clinical trial, the participants showed high satisfaction with the emulsion's efficacy, reporting significant improvement in skin sebum secretion, acne, facial pores, and blackheads. The efficacy of the novel emulsion was further validated through VISIA and PRIMOS measurements, along with professional dermatologist evaluations. Crops arose from wild ancestors and to understand their domestication it is essential to compare the cultivated species with their crop wild relatives. These represent an important source of further crop improvement, in particular in relation to climate change. Although there are about 58,000 Lens accessions held in genebanks, only 1% are wild.We examined the geographic distribution and genetic diversity of the lentil's immediate progenitor L. orientalis. We used Genotyping by Sequencing (GBS) to identify and characterize differentiation among accessions held at germplasm collections. We then determined whether genetically distinct clusters of accessions had been collected from climatically distinct locations.Of the 195 genotyped accessions, 124 were genuine L. orientalis with four identified genetic groups. Although an environmental distance matrix was significantly correlated with geographic distance in a Mantel test, the four identified genetic clusters were not found to occupy significantly different environmental space. Maxent modelling gave a distinct predicted distribution pattern centred in the Fertile Crescent, with intermediate probabilities of occurrence in parts of Turkey, Greece, Cyprus, Morocco, and the south of the Iberian Peninsula with NW Africa. Future projections did not show any dramatic alterations in the distribution according to the climate change scenarios tested.We have found considerable diversity in L. orientalis, some of which track climatic variability. The results of the study showed the genetic diversity of wild lentil and indicate the importance of ongoing collections and in situ conservation for our future capacity to harness the genetic variation of the lentil progenitor. The present study investigated the effect of sole as well as combined foliar application of zinc (Zn) and urea at flowering and pod formation stages and soil application of Zn on symbiotic parameters, growth, yield, and economics of lentil. Field experiments were conducted at two locations (Ludhiana and Faridkot, northern India) during the winter season of 2018–19 and 2019–20 in randomized complete block design. The experiment comprised of 11 treatments [control (no soil/foliar application of ZnSO4 and no urea foliar application), soil Zn (25 kg ZnSO4 ha−1), foliar application of sole Zn (0.5% ZnSO4) or urea (2%) and combined Zn + urea at flowering, pod formation, or flowering + pod formation stages] and three replications. Zn and urea fertilization significantly improved the grain yield and related traits and economics in both the years of study at both the locations. The treatment of combined foliar application of Zn + urea at flowering + pod formation stages recorded the highest symbiotic parameters, chlorophyll content, growth and yield attributes, grain yield (29.5% higher than control), gross returns (29.5% higher), net economic returns (56.2% higher), and benefit cost ratio. The combined foliar application of Zn + urea can be done to improve growth, productivity, and economics of lentil and, therefore, it can help in upliftment of economic status of farmers. The use of high-performant varieties could help to improve the production of food legumes and thus meet the demand of the growing world population. However, long periods needed to develop new varieties through traditional breeding are a major obstacle. Thus, new techniques allowing faster genetic advance are needed. Speed breeding using longer periods of light exposure on plants, appears to be a good solution for accelerating plant life cycles and generation turnover. However, applying extended photoperiod causes plant stress and mortality due to lack of information on the adequate intensity to be used in speed breeding protocol. This study examines the impact of light intensity under speed breeding conditions on the development and growth of lentils and chickpeas, with a keen interest in enhancing genetic gain in these key food legumes. Four distinct levels of light intensity (T1: Green-house: 2000 µmol/m2/s; T2: 148–167 µmol/m2/s; T3: 111–129 µmol/m2/s; T4: 74–93 µmol/m2/s) under a photoperiod of 18 h of light and 6 h of darkness were tested in a growth chamber. Significant variation depending on light intensity was observed for plant height, total biomass, number of secondary stems, pods number, number of seeds per plant, growth rate, green canopy cover, time to flowering, time of pod set, time to maturity, vegetative stage length, reproduction stage length and seed filling stage length. Light intensity significantly influenced flowering/maturity and plant's stress compared to normal conditions in green-house where flowering/maturity were around 67/97 days for lentil and 79/111 days for chickpea. Therefore, lentils in treatment 2 flowered and reached maturity in 30/45 days respectively, with high stress, while chickpeas in the same treatment did not flower. In contrast, treatment 4 showed interesting results, promoting optimal growth with low stress, and flowering/maturity in 27/46 days and 28/54 days, respectively for lentils and chickpeas. These results underline the crucial importance of light management in speed breeding to accelerate vegetative growth and phenology while allowing healthy growth conditions for plants to produce enough seeds for generation turnover. Pesticides in plant-derived foods are becoming an important problem due to their intensive use in plant cultivation. Today, specific pesticides are used in agriculture. Ever since pesticides are potentially hazardous to the environment and thus to human health through the consumption of pesticide-contaminated food. The European Community, as well as the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry of the Republic of Turkey, have set maximum residue levels (MRLs) for pesticide residues in plant-based foods, based on the assumption that good agricultural practices are applied in the use of pesticides in agriculture. As a result, food products must be checked to ensure that MRLs are not violated. Therefore, an appropriate control of its residues in the samples should be carried out. In this study, polar pesticides in food based on plant origin were determined by LC-MS/MS after extraction with methanol according to modified Quick Polar Pesticides method which released and implemented by EURL. Optimization of 13 different polar pesticides was performed with LC-MS/MS Q-Trap. Once the optimization process was completed, the samples to be initialized according to the SANTE (Guidance document on analytical quality control and method validation procedures for pesticide residues and analysis in food and feed) guidelines have been carefully selected, including high water, high acid/high water, high sugar/low water, high oil/low water and high starch/low water content and difficult or unique commodities. Tomato, lemon, dried fig, red lentil, walnut and sage samples carefully selected according to SANTE guidelines, were run at two different concentration levels, at the detection limit of 10 µg/L and 100 µg/L. In the light of the studies, it was determined that the RSD (Relative Standard Deviation) criteria for reproducibility for all substances were below 20%. Furthermore, the recovery value for all substances was in the range of 70 – 120%. As a consequence, 13 different high-polar pesticide substances can be analyzed in plant-derived product groups with the LC-MS/MS method developed using a hypercarb column. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper describes the possibilities of designing breads and pastries produced according to a basic recipe from wheat or wheat-rye flour to improve their nutritional potential. The basic principle is the partial replacement of wheat or rye with non-bakery raw materials, which are valued thanks to the content of beneficial components. In this way, it is possible to create diverse products with the potential for positive effects on consumer health. However, the application of such raw materials affects the technological parameters of composite flours and subsequent intermediates of the production process, and it also changes cost items and, consequently, the production price of the products. Therefore, efforts should be made to find the right balance and recommend procedures and recipes that allow the final product to be prepared with the required quality and an affordable price. In our research, the additions of various non-bakery ingredients were verified, and the presented results show how these ingredients affected the selected rheological properties of the dough, and how these changes in the basic recipe affected the costs of the final product. During the experiments, the following raw materials were added: spelt wheat flour, amaranth flour, flour from selected legumes (common bean, broad bean, chickpea, lentil) and lyophilised homogenized red fruits (elderberry fruits, blackcurrant fruits, black chokeberry, and serviceberry fruits, or in the case of elderberry also flowers). The addition of these non-bakery ingredients, depending on the amount of their addition, changed both the water absorption and the rheological properties of the dough (dough development time, dough stability), or baking loss or bread yield. Non-bakery raw materials increase the financial cost of innovative products, and the question arises as to how willing consumers are to pay extra for such foods with added nutritional value. Background: Lentil is one of the most significant pulse crops, frequently referred to as "poor man's meat" because of its high protein content and inexpensive price. The present study was assessed for eleven morphological and yield variables to determine genetic variability, correlation and path co-efficients. Methods: The experiment was conducted in a randomized complete block design using 56 different homogeneous progenies of a spontaneous mutant of lentil variety DPL 62 and four control varieties in triple replica during rabi 2017-18. Result: Significant amount of variability was observed for all the traits. High phenotypic coefficients of variance and genotypic coefficients of variance coupled with high heritability and genetic advance were observed for peduncle length, number of pods per plant, seed width, seed yield per plant suggesting that these traits are genetically controlled by additive gene action. Seed yield per plant exhibited significant positive association with number of branches/plant and number of pods/plant while number of pods/plant revealed highest positive direct effect on seed yield per plant followed by 100-seed weight, number of branches per plant, days to maturity and leaflet breadth. Background: Collar rot is an important disease of lentil in India and causes significant yield loss annually. Considering the recent focus on the development and use of environmentally feasible management strategies, the objectives of the study was to identify resistant sources and evaluation of native antagonists as well as plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPRs) in yield improvement and disease management of lentil. Methods: Eleven popular lentil varieties were screened for resistance/susceptibility reaction against collar rot in vivo. The efficacy of two bacterial and fungal biocontrol agents (BCAs) was tested against a virulent isolate of Sclerotium rolfsii. Four PGPRs were also evaluated to study their influence on the growth parameters as well as their ability to manage S. rolfsii. Result: Three genotypes were found to be tolerant, four genotypes were moderately susceptible, while four genotypes were highly susceptible. Among the BCAs, the highest average inhibition % was observed in treatment with Bacillus sp. Among the PGPR treatments, Rhizobium in combination with phosphate solubilizing bacteria and Trichoderma or Bacillus was the most effective in controlling the collar rot when used as seed treatment and hence can be used for disease management. Background: In the agricultural context, drought is a period of deficient water conditions, resulting in negative effects on crop growth and yield. A continuous increase in global temperature, leading to warmer climatic conditions, is expected to further increase the severity and frequency of drought. Methods: The experiments were carried out during 2018-2019 under laboratory conditions to study the effects of PEG-6000 on seedling growth in eight genotypes of lentil (Lens culinaris Medik.). Result: Our research work evaluated the effect of PEG-6000 induced drought stress on metabolite and enzymatic activity of eight genotypes of lentil (Lens culinaris Medik.) (PL-4, L-4147, L-4594, L-4596 belonging to microsperma subspecies and K-75, L-4076, DPL-15, DPL-62 belonging to macrosperma subspecies). Drought stress significantly increased metabolite content i.e., protein, proline and carbohydrate and enzyme activity i.e., acid phosphatase, invertase in drought tolerant genotypes (PL-4, L-4594, DPL-15 and DPL-62) and reduced amount of these metabolites and enzymes was observed in drought susceptible genotypes (L-4147, L-4596, K-75, L-4076). This study presents an explanatory biophysical model developed and validated to simulate seed coat colour traits including CIE L*, a*, and b* changes over time for stored lentil cultivars PBA Hallmark, PBA Hurricane, PBA Bolt, and PBA Jumbo2 under diverse storage conditions. The model showed robust performance for all cultivars, with R2 values ≥ 0.89 and RMSE values ≤ 0.0019 for all seed coat colour traits. Laboratory validation at 35 °C demonstrated a high agreement (Lin's Concordance Correlation Coefficient, CCC ≥ 0.82) between simulated and observed values of all colour traits for PBA Jumbo2 and strong agreement (CCC ≥ 0.81) for PBA Hallmark in brightness (CIE L*) and redness (CIE a*), but not in yellowness (CIE b*). At 15 °C, both cultivars exhibited moderate to weak agreement between simulated and observed values of all colour traits (CCC ≤ 0.47), as very little change was recorded in the observed values over the 360 days of storage. Bulk storage system validation for PBA Hallmark showed moderate performance (CCC ≥ 0.46) between simulated and observed values of all colour traits. Modelling to simulate changes in seed coat colour traits of lentils over time will equip growers and traders to make informed managerial decisions when storing lentils for long periods. Lentil (Lens culinaris Medik.) is widely known among grain legumes for its high nutritional quality, playing an important role in enhancing Mediterranean farming systems as a sustainable crop. Field experiments comparing 121 lentil accessions (microsperma and macrosperma types from different countries) were conducted in a semi-arid environment of south Italy over two growing seasons (2016/2017 and 2017/2018). Their agronomic performance was determined, focusing on phenological, morphological, productive, and qualitative variability. Changes in rainfall and temperatures affected the agronomic traits, especially yield components. In both years, the average grain yield (GY) (2.31 and 2.22 t ha−1, respectively) was above the threshold of 2 t ha−1. Consistent yield exceeding the field average in both growing seasons revealed the superiority of accessions from Egypt, Cyprus, Algeria, Nepal, and Tunisia. Moreover, microsperma yielded more (+0.31 and +0.41 t ha−1 in the first and second year, respectively) than macrosperma accessions. Flowering (DASF—days after sowing to flowering) and thousand seed weight (TSW) appeared to be the most important traits related to grain yield. Flowering earliness seems to act as a mechanism for overcoming abiotic stresses. The analysis of yield components revealed a different productive determinism within the two subspecies. As also highlighted by the Principal Component Analysis, microsperma accessions presented on average a significantly higher number of pods per plant (PP) and seeds per pod (SP), despite the considerable variability among countries of origin. The results showed phenological and morphological variability among genotypes, which should be taken into account in view of future selection programs focused on obtaining lentil ideotypes suitable for the Mediterranean environment. Chickpea (Cicer arietinum) is a grain crop that is an important source of protein, vitamins, carbohydrates and minerals. It is highly sensitive to salt stress, and salt damage to cellular homeostasis and protein folding affects production. Plants have several mechanisms to prevent cellular damages under abiotic stresses, such as proteins in the endoplasmic reticulum (protein isulfide somerases (PDIs) and PDI-like proteins), which help prevent the build-up of mis-folded proteins that are damaged under abiotic stresses. In this study, we completed initial comprehensive genome-wide analysis of the chickpea PDI gene family. We found eight PDI genes are distributed on six out of eight chromosomes. Two pairs of paralogous genes were found to have segmental duplications. The phylogenetic analysis showed that the PDIs have a high degree of homology in C. arietinum, Cicer reticulatum, Lens culinaris, Phaseolus acutifolius, Pisum sativum and Oryza sativa. The gene structure analysis displayed that CaPDI1-CaPDI8 have 9-12 exons except for CaPDI5, which has 25 exons. Subcellular localisation indicated accumulation of CaPDIs in endoplasmic reticulum. Protein-conserved motifs and domain analysis demonstrated that thioredoxin domains of PDI family is present in all CaPDIs. CaPDI proteins have strong protein-protein interaction. In silico expression analysis showed that four out of eight PDI genes (CPDI2, CaPDI6, CaPDI7 and CaPDI8) were expressed under salt stress. Of these, expression of CaPDI2 and CaPDI8 was the highest. This work indicated that PDI genes are involved in salt stress tolerance in chickpea and the CaPDIs may be further studied for their role of inducing salt tolerance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

• Microbial inoculants, (Rhizobium and two strains of AMF), were evaluated for their effectiveness in mitigating metal toxicity and reducing metal uptake in lentil plants. • Sewage sludge-amended soil adversely impacted lentil growth, leading to increased accumulation of heavy metals. • Microbial inoculants enhanced lentil growth and productivity, particularly under heavy metal stress. • Co application of microbial inoculants synergistically reduced heavy metal uptake in roots and shoots of lentil with more efficiency. • The findings suggest microbial inoculants could have practical applications for sustainable agriculture and efficient crop production. Reusing sewage sludge as a mode of nutrients and an organic amendment may be a viable choice for the appropriate treatment of organic waste. This study examined the impact of symbiotic microbes such as Rhizobium and two selected arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), Funneliformis caledonius (Nicolson & Gerd.) and Glomus bagyarajii (Mehrotra), on the growth, photosynthetic pigments, biochemical content, microbial population, and heavy metal uptake in lentil plants grown in soil mixed with 20 % sewage sludge. Lentil seeds were inoculated with Rhizobium prior to sowing and with either of the AMF (Funneliformis caledonius or Glomus bagyarajii) in pots filled with soil-sewage sludge mixture. The results showed that the tested microbial inoculum enhanced the growth and productivity of lentil plants. Lentil plants inoculated with Rhizobium and AMF had better nodulation and root colonization, leading to an increase in the nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium (NPK) content and a decrease in the stress marker, proline, in plant parts. In addition, the inoculated microbes also improved the photosynthetic and biochemical contents of the plant. Lentil plants grown in sewage sludge-amended soil when inoculated with Rhizobium and either of AMF were found to be more effective in accumulating Cd, Cr, Pb, Ni, and Zn in the roots, while restricting their translocation to the above-ground parts of the plant, thereby improving plant health. Overall, the study outcomes provide evidence that Rhizobium and AMF have the potential to tolerate heavy metal stress caused by the addition of sewage sludge to soil, which has important implications for sustainable agriculture practices. The study also highlights the importance of microbial inoculants, such as Rhizobium and AMF in enhancing growth and yield, particularly under heavy metal stress in economically important lentil.
