Self-regulated learning (SRL) has been extensively explored in psychological research, particularly for its influential role in online education systems. Despite its importance, little is understood about how SRL-focused training impacts students' academic experiences. This study seeks to address this gap by examining SRL interventions within Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). Using a quasi-experimental design, the research involves both control and experimental groups. SRL strategy questionnaires and learner self-evaluations for speaking skills were administered before and after the training. Learning diaries were used to analyze students' application of SRL strategies in the MOOC environment, and pre- and post-tests measured the intervention's impact on speaking proficiency. Additionally, descriptive statistical analysis was conducted on the questionnaire results, complemented by thematic analysis of students' reflective journals. T he findings revealed a strong positive correlation between EFL students' SRL strategy usage and their speaking course outcomes. Reflective journal analysis indicated that students tailored SRL strategies to their learning processes within MOOC contexts. The study provides practical insights for incorporating SRL training into MOOC-based learning and offers a theoretical foundation for promoting SRL across diverse educational systems.

"Pondok pesantren salafiyah" (Islamic school) is an Islamic educational institution known for its traditional approach to Islam. The teaching of mystical science in "pondok pesantren salafiyah" includes the use of mystical "ijazah" (certification) and ritual learning methods, providing students with a unique education. This study's main focus is exploring the learning methods, processes, understanding, and ritual methods of mystical diplomas applied by "kiai" (leader of Islamic boarding school). This study aims to understand more deeply how this mystical ritual is taught and how it contributes to the spiritual development of students in "salafi" boarding schools. This research uses qualitative research techniques, participant observation, interviews, and document analysis. The results showed that practicing mystical rituals involves reading sacred texts (yellow book), "riyadah" (meditation), symbolic movements, and physical exercise. This contributes to the spiritual development of students and their introduction to mystical teachings. The research also highlights "pesantren's" unique approach to combining mystical teachings with traditional Islamic education, which supports a deeper understanding of spirituality. In addition, this study also discusses the challenges and opportunities faced by Islamic educational institutions in preserving and adapting ritual learning methods in the modern era.

Students with strong metacognitive skills are positioned to learn and achieve more than peers who are still developing their metacognition. Yet, many students come to college without well-developed metacognitive skills. As part of a longitudinal study on metacognitive development, we asked when, why, and how first-year life science majors use metacognitive skills of planning, monitoring, and evaluating. Guided by the metacognition framework, we collected data from 52 undergraduates at three institutions using semi-structured interviews. We found that first-year students seek study recommendations from instructors, peers, and online resources when they plan their study strategies. First-year students struggle to accurately monitor their understanding and benefit when instructors help them confront what they do not yet know. First-year students evaluate the effectiveness of their study plans at two specific points: immediately after taking an exam and/or after receiving their grade on an exam. While first-year students may be particularly open to suggestions on how to learn, they may need help debunking myths about learning. First-year students acknowledge they are still learning to monitor and welcome formative assessments that help them improve the accuracy of their monitoring. First-year students may be primed to receive guidance on their metacognition at the points when they are most likely to evaluate the effectiveness of their study strategies and plans. Based on our results, we offer suggestions for instructors who want to support first-year students to further develop their metacognition.

Students in STEM know well the stress, challenge, and effort that accompany college exams. As a widely recognizable feature of the STEM classroom experience, high-stakes assessments serve as crucial cultural gateways in shaping both preparation and motivation for careers. In this essay, we identify and discuss issues of power around STEM exams to further the understanding of exam practices that can unjustly hold students back. Through theory and practical examples, we consider the numerous ways in which power manifests both on and off the pages of the exams themselves, as well as ways in which power is consolidated away from students through logistical norms and tradeoffs. Centering the "rules of the culture of power" as delineated by Dr. Lisa Delpit, we reflect on exam practices that prioritize faculty voice and faculty convenience above student learning and student identity. We share some of what we have learned from our students as part of a call to improve STEM education by relinquishing some of our exam-related power over students, redistributing it to students so that they have more power to shape their own education.

This study uses Panadero et al.'s (2021) Deep Learning Strategies Questionnaire to discover EFL learners' strategies from a new perspective. The questionnaire is a newly designed self-report instrument with ground-breaking features constructed with validity and reliability to measure students' actual strategies in real situations. The current study is the first in an EFL context to use this innovative tool. It investigates self-regulation strategies for learning English as a foreign language (EFL) among 430 male EFL college students in Saudi Arabia. The questionnaire enabled us to adopt a micro-level inspection of strategy functions based on an innovative model that can help identify possible avenues for strategy interventions. The results mostly showed a high use of deep language learning strategies in all four questionnaire categories: basic learning, visual elaboration and summarizing, deep information processing, and social learning. Consequently, all the categories had a strong, positive, and significant correlation. In addition, the most used strategies were basic learning strategies, whereas the least used were visual elaboration and summarizing. Our findings provide useful pedagogical implications for promoting EFL learning strategies and strategy instruction. Successfully replicating the Deep Learning Strategies Questionnaire scrutinizes this methodological instrument's validity and reliability and encourages other researchers to use it.

The aim of the study was determining the openness to learning tendencies and metacognitive learning strategies and analysing the predictive relationships between the related variables. The predictive research model was used in the study. Within the research, 499 education faculty students participated. For data collection, "Metacognitive Learning Strategies Scale" and "Tendency to be Open to Learning Scale" were used. The collected data were analyzed using simple linear regression analysis and multiple linear regression analysis. Consequently, it was determined that students frequently use metacognitive learning strategies; their tendencies to be open to learning are at a high level. It was concluded that the tendency to be open to learning significantly predicted the total scores obtained from the metacognitive learning strategies scale. It was concluded that the most predicted variable by the predictive variables together was planning strategies, and the least predicted variable was evaluation strategies. These results show that openness to learning is a vital variable in activating metacognitive learning strategies.

This research determines the student's learning strategies based on their learning styles. This research applied qualitative study. The subject of this research is the students of English literature class A in Universitas Negeri Makassar, who were selected through a purposive sampling technique. Thirty-five students were chosen as the subjects of this study. The data were obtained through questionnaires and interviews and then analyzed based on producers of data analysis identification, classification, and descriptive analysis. The result showed that i) there are some learning styles that students have, such as visual, auditory, and kinesthetic (VAK) learning styles; and ii) students' learning strategies based on their learning style where subjects engaged in several learning activities or methodologies. Two types of learning techniques were primarily considered: individual and group strategies. The individual strategies were marked by all of the activities the subjects had done, and the group strategies described the learning actions employed by the subjects to comprehend the knowledge or the lesson by engaging friends who could help them.

Training of self-regulated learning is most effective if it supports learning strategies in combination with metacognitive regulation, and learners can transfer their acquired metacognitive regulation skills to different tasks that require the use of the same learning strategy (near transfer). However, whether learners can transfer metacognitive regulation skills acquired in combination with a specific learning strategy to the regulation of a different learning strategy (far transfer) is still under debate. While there is empirical evidence that learners can transfer metacognitive regulation between different learning strategies of the same type (e.g., from one cognitive learning strategy to another), whether transfer also occurs between learning strategies of different types is an open question. Here, we conducted an experimental field study with 5th and 6th grade students (N = 777). Students were cluster-randomized and assigned to one of three groups: two experimental groups receiving different training on the metacognitive regulation of a cognitive learning strategy and one control group receiving no training. After training, students worked on two different tasks; after each task, we measured their metacognitive regulation of a resource management strategy, that is, investing mental effort. Results (based on data from 368 students due to pandemic conditions) indicated far metacognitive regulation transfer: After training, students in the training groups were better able to metacognitively regulate their mental effort than students in the control group. Although effect sizes were small, our results support the hypothesis of far transfer of metacognitive regulation.

Background: Feedback as one of the most influential factors for learning has been subject to a great body of research. It plays a key role in the development of educational technology systems and is traditionally rooted in deterministic feedback defined by experts and their experience. However, with the rise of generative AI and especially large language models (LLMs), we expect feedback as part of learning systems to transform, especially for the context of programming. In the past, it was challenging to automate feedback for learners of programming. LLMs may create new possibilities to provide richer, and more individual feedback than ever before. Objectives: This article aims to generate specific types of feedback for introductory programming tasks using LLMs. We revisit existing feedback taxonomies to capture the specifics of the generated feedback, such as randomness, uncertainty and degrees of variation. Methods: We iteratively designed prompts for the generation of specific feedback types (as part of existing feedback taxonomies) in response to authentic student programs. We then evaluated the generated output and determined to what extent it reflected certain feedback types. Results and Conclusion: This study provides a better understanding of different feedback dimensions and characteristics. The results have implications for future feedback research with regard to, for example, feedback effects and learners' informational needs. It further provides a basis for the development of new tools and learning systems for novice programmers including feedback generated by AI.

Background: Despite the numerous positive effects of augmented reality (AR) on learning, previous research has shown ambiguous results regarding the cognitive demand on the learner arising from, for example, the overlay of virtual elements or novel interaction techniques. At the same time, the number of evidence-based guidelines on designing AR is limited or focuses on global effects, primarily relying on media comparison studies, whose validity is criticised. Objective: To guide the meaningful design of learning and training settings, this paper systematically reviews empirical research on AR design and synthesises the findings to develop evidence-based recommendations for designing AR systems considering cognitive load. Methods: We conducted a systematic literature review, initially screening 810 distinct papers and ultimately analysing findings from 27 publications, which report on 29 distinct experimental studies. This selection was based on rigorously defined inclusion and exclusion criteria, adhering to the PRISMA guidelines. Results and Conclusion: The central value of this paper is the aggregation of existing evidence from empirical studies, resulting in 15 recommendations for AR design based on six design dimensions: Spatiality-related, Interaction-related, Contextuality-related, Content-related, Guidance-related and Display Selection. Additionally, with three points for future research, this systematic literature review, first, stresses the need for more empirical evidence and value-added studies. Second, learner characteristics that might influence cognitive load in AR-based learning should be examined. Third, it advocates for the inclusion of measurements beyond the NASA-TLX, and including more physiological measurements (e.g., eye-tracking, EEG) to enhance the applicability of the results for learning and training situations.

Background: Recent research has demonstrated the potential of mobile-assisted learning to enhance learners' learning outcomes. In contrast, the learning processes in this regard are much less explored using eye tracking technology. Objective: This systematic review study aims to synthesise the relevant work to reflect the current state of eye tracking use in mobile-assisted learning research over the past 20 years. Method: Fifty-two articles were identified using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis approach, and analysed based on the technology-based learning model in five key dimensions: publication information, research domains, technologies, methods, and eye tracking-related subdimensions. Results and Discussion: The findings indicate a growth in eye tracking studies from 2004 to 2023, with visual and cognitive science and educational technology being the most studied domains. Tablets were the most utilised medium, along with a usage shift towards tracking glasses. Experiment durations, participant numbers, and education levels varied across studies, but reading tasks were common. Questionnaires and tests were the main additional data collection methods, and fixation was the most frequently used category of eye tracking measures. Most studies provided no information on their defined interest areas, from which they extracted eye tracking data, and employed parametric or non-parametric procedures to compare group means for data analysis. The studies primarily explored task performance, learning strategies, and learning tools, while multimedia learning, linguistic processing, and emotion received limited attention. Implications: The systematic review highlights research limitations of current practices for attention and suggests potential avenues for future eye tracking efforts in mobile-assisted learning.

Task motivation is critical to learners' task performance. However, scant studies have examined learners' task motivation in the translation continuation task based on the "xu"-argument, an emerging view on language acquisition. This exploratory study examined how Chinese English as Foreign Language (EFL) learners' task motivation changed in ten translation continuation tasks and what factors contributed to the changes. Five second-year students in a Chinese university participated in the study and they were requested to perform one translation continuation task each week over ten consecutive weeks. Task motivation questionnaires were distributed after each task. Interviews were conducted in the fourth week and the last week. Results showed that participants' general task motivation across the ten tasks exhibited a "high-low-high" changing pattern. Factors accounting for task motivation fluctuations were categorized as learner-level, task-level, and post-task-level, wherein topic selection and content features played the most prominent roles. Two representative learners were identified due to their higher- or lower-than-average task motivation levels in most tasks. The findings offer pedagogical insights into improving task motivation and developing learner-specific strategies for translation continuation tasks.

This research aims to analyze the relations from motivation to self-regulatory strategy on academic achievement in high school among academically higher-achieving students. Methods in autoregressive cross-lagged modeling by Mplus8.5 are used to evaluate 309 high school students with higher achievement in language or mathematics from the Korean Education Longitudinal Study 2013 (KELS 2013). First, motivation on cognitive regulatory strategy and cognitive regulatory strategy on behavioral regulatory strategy statistically significant positive relate to the same year and two years later. Second, the longitudinally mediated self-regulatory strategy between motivation and high school academic achievement is not statistically significant. These findings would strengthen the rationale for practical strategies for academic achievement in learner-centered gifted education.

This study was conducted to optimize the designs of learning guides embedded in a computer-based simulation environment. The research was based on the Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning and Cognitive Load Theory. We investigated computer simulations under four conditions that combined representation and imagination learning strategies. This study recruited 244 fifth-grade Taiwanese students from various backgrounds (indigenous vs. nonindigenous, 98 vs. 146; boys vs. girls, 131 vs. 113) and examined the interactions and main effects of the four experimental conditions on the students' learning of geometric area concepts. The results revealed that the computer-based simulation platform can serve as a cognitive tool to help students to explore graphs and identify formulas. Moreover, the dynamic representations and trace changing imagination strategy embedded in the learning platform as guiding tools were highly beneficial for learners; this tool moderately reduced the learners' extraneous cognitive load and improved their learning performance at the application level. The static representation and concept imagination strategy embedded in the platform as a learning guide was also noted to increase the learners' internal cognitive load, which impaired their learning performance. Notably, boys and girls adopted different learning strategies, and the overall platform appeared to be more beneficial for nonindigenous students and students with middle to high levels of cultural stimulation than for indigenous students and students with low levels of cultural stimulation.

In the modern American politics classroom, ideological and partisan conflict have the capacity to interfere with a healthy classroom environment. This problem is increasingly apparent when students engage questions at the heart of U.S. Constitutional design. By asking students to inhabit fictional roles with preferences and attitudes that may differ from their own, classroom simulation activities present a potential solution to this issue. In the present study I introduce a two-week constitutional convention simulation that centers on the fictional Principality of Genovia. Working in groups, students assume roles within various segments of Genovian society who seek democratic representation following the sudden abdication of their autocratic prince. The simulation is designed to foreshadow key concepts in American government and politics. It does so in a way that allows for vociferous debate and conflict while sidestepping students' preexisting ideologies and party attachments. It also provides a collaborative, active learning environment that fosters healthy classroom dynamics and encourages later collaboration. In a pre-post survey instrument, I test the effectiveness of the Genovian simulation in fostering key learning outcomes and enhancing the student experience vis-a-vis several other classroom modules, finding that the Genovian exercise is beneficial to students on several dimensions.

This qualitative case study proposes a pedagogy to support the academic success of students from historically excluded groups (HEGs), e.g. first-generation students, low-income students, and Students of Color, who are struggling academically. We adopted a 'student-ready' approach (McNair et al. 2016), which foregrounds institutional responsibility for meeting the needs of students. This study took place at a large, public, research-focused institution in the US. Undergraduate students from HEGs nominated faculty who they believed supported their academic success. Nominated instructors participated in semi-structured interviews and classroom observations to share more about their teaching. Data were analysed and categorized into themes: Creating a Culture of Learning, Demonstrating Care, and Meeting Students Where They Are. These themes were then applied to create a model of Student-Ready Critical Care Pedagogy, a teaching approach for working with struggling students.

Globally, many complex issues, like the ageing population and health inequalities, require attention. People are experimenting to combat these issues in their local contexts through bigger or smaller networks; however, much of the knowledge about these initiatives remains localised and elitist and omits the voices and perspectives of citizens. This article identifies the characteristics of a more horizontal, emergent and plural epistemology to mobilize knowledge. We used local networks building age-friendly communities in the Netherlands as a case study. With members of 110 local networks, we worked with a new methodology called "dynamic knowledge synthesis" to create fruitful interactions and learn with stakeholders, including older citizens, in a learning community. Four working principles helped us, namely (1) a rhizomatic design based on multiplicity, heterogeneity and non-linearity of knowledge; (2) fertile soil nurtured by the talents and wisdom of participants through participatory arts-based methods; (3) so-called 'wicked skills' of a forester 2.0 to facilitate learning; and (4) an ecosystem metaphor as a boundary object to understand local networks. We invite colleagues to experiment with dynamic knowledge synthesis to connect on different levels, with particular attention to the inclusion of citizens in creating sustainable local communities.

There is a long tradition of intergenerational transfer of knowledge in Nepali communities. While local languages are seen as crucial means for preserving, transmitting and applying traditional knowledge, ongoing social change has raised concern that local languages and knowledge as foundations of learning and cultural identity are being weakened. This paper, based on ethnographic fieldwork in Brahmin-Kshatriya and Chamling Rai communities in the western and eastern hill districts of Nepal, contributes insights on indigenous intergenerational learning by exploring the literacy, language and learning strategies of eight local families. To ease the accessibility of traditional knowledge to the younger generations, they opt for creative and innovative ways of using bilingual approaches, different scripts and translanguaging. The article discusses how the identified indigenous intergenerational practices can contribute to better address the learning needs of local communities. Building on such local practices supports an alternative approach to literacy and language in intergenerational learning.

The main objective of this methodological article is to discuss the contribution of response times as a tool in education research. The use of response times in research is largely a legacy of the work carried out in cognitive psychology, which has made it possible to describe the cognitive processes involved in information processing. In education, research that incorporates response times into its methodological design often has two main objectives: 1) evaluate the automation of basic learning and 2) infer the cognitive processes involved in academic learning, such as working memory and inhibitory control. This article addresses and discusses specific research designs that use response times across various academic disciplines and instructional levels, offering a comprehensive overview of the potential applications of response times in education research. In light of this overview, utilizing response times in education research not only emerges as relevant but also serves to complement existing methodological tools. For instance, such designs can aid in identifying the relative difficulty of different types of learning, understanding the underlying reasons for such variations, and offering valuable insights for developing learning sequences and pedagogical interventions that are more consistent with learning processes.

In an online learning environment, both instruction and assessments take place virtually where students are primarily responsible for managing their own learning. This requires a high level of self-regulation from students. Many online students, however, lack self-regulation skills and are ill-prepared for autonomous learning, which can cause students to feel disengaged from online activities. In addition, students tend to feel isolated during online activities due to limited social interaction. To address these challenges, this study explores the use of chatbots to facilitate students' self-regulated learning strategies and promote social presence to alleviate their feelings of isolation. Using a two-phase mixed-methods design, this study evaluates students' behavioral engagement, perceived self-regulated learning strategies, and social presence in chatbot-supported online learning. In the first phase (Stage I Study), 39 students engaged in a goal-setting chatbot activity that employed the SMART framework and social presence indicators. The findings served as the basis for improving the chatbot design in the second phase (Stage II Study), in which 25 students interacted with the revised chatbot, focusing on goal-setting, help-seeking, self-evaluation, and social interaction with instructor's presence. The results show that the students in both studies had positive online learning experiences with the chatbots. Follow-up interviews with students and instructors provide valuable insights and suggestions for refining the chatbot design, such as chatbots for ongoing monitoring of self-regulation habits and personalized social interaction. Drawing from the evidence, we discuss a set of chatbot design principles that support students' self-regulated learning and social presence in online settings.

The great development of high-throughput molecular biology techniques and the consequent generation of massive data have made Bioinformatics essential for undergraduate Bioscience students. The importance of this scientific discipline is evidenced by the huge number of specialized publications, tools, and databases available. Training in Bioinformatics equips undergraduates with transferable skills that can be applied in all fields of Biology, such as programming abilities, data analysis, database management, biological knowledge, statistics, problem solving, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Over the past decade, there has been a notable increase in the number of higher education institutions worldwide that have adopted a competency-based curricula. This approach places a significant emphasis on the actions and skills that students are expected to develop, rather than merely focusing on the information, they are required to memorize. In this educational context, the use of active learning strategies has been demonstrated to enhance student comprehension and competency development. This paper describes the implementation of an active learning approach in a hands-on lesson performed by undergraduate students of Biology at the University of Malaga (Spain). Its main objective is to introduce students to molecular databases and information search systems on genes, proteins, and phylogeny. This is achieved within the framework of a smart campus, which integrates technological and sustainable resources to promote a positive and productive learning environment for the university community. This work presents the content and procedure of this practical activity, as well as the evaluation method and the results of a student survey to assess their opinions.

Teachers as implementers of the curriculum have a vital role in delivering (Casey et al., 2009) reflecting teaching approaches in physical education classes. Cooperative learning is a teaching approach that meets the curricular requirements in Germany as well as considers the increasing heterogeneity of students. However, there is limited research about strategies and practices, which teachers use to implement cooperative learning successfully in physical education. To bridge this gap, our study examines teachers' perspectives on implementation strategies and application approaches of cooperative learning lessons. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 20 German physical education teachers based on the principle of contrasting. The interviews were conducted from October to November 2022 as problem-related interviews, guided by a theory-based semi-structured guideline. We used qualitative content analysis to analyse the interview data. Analysis was expanded to identify different types of practicing cooperative learning in physical education. The findings reveal that teachers address and implement forms of cooperative learning quite heterogeneously. Teachers' implementation strategies were bottom-up, top-down or hybrid. Reactions to difficulties were avoidance, flexibility, implementing rules, training social skills or restructuring. In addition, five different types of cooperative learning practices were determined ('the avoider', 'the quitter', 'the student-centred', 'the theory-led' and 'the flexible one'). While 'the avoider' and 'the quitter' type teachers stopped using cooperative learning, the other types used this teaching approach often in their physical education classes. 'The flexible one' used the hybrid implementation of cooperative learning and reported the lowest difficulties. Our findings contribute to a better understanding of teachers' strategies and practices to depict how cooperative learning processes in physical education are implemented. Findings can be used to further develop concepts for cooperative learning in physical education. At the same time, this may help to better prepare teachers to realise cooperative learning arrangements and to deal successfully with corresponding challenges.

In the digital age, it's crucial to equip children with twenty-first-century skills, including programming and other competencies such as creativity, analytical thinking, and collaboration. This study introduces an integrated STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) curriculum focused on computer science for educators. It explores the pedagogical strategies employed by early childhood teachers to enhance children's algorithmic thinking skills. Descriptive analysis of videos depicting coding instruction in three cases revealed that teachers used question & answer and unplugged strategies to support algorithmic thinking. However, these practices primarily targeted lower-order thinking skills. Teachers employed algorithm design, reading and tracing code as programming-specific approaches. Additionally, worksheets with puzzles/grids and grid board games were commonly used as scaffolding materials in coding activities.

This article seeks to demonstrate how class participation points enhance students' engagement in response to the increasing quest for pedagogic practices to enhance engagement. This investigation is based on a six-week field study of three tutorial classes of postgraduate business management students and six semi-structured interviews with two students from each tutorial class in a UK university. The findings suggest that class participation points are useful for enhancing student engagement. Additionally, the study uncovers the role of inclusive learning strategies and autonomous support in complementing class participation points for enhancing students' behavioural, cognitive, and emotional engagement. In particular, while the methods of class participation points, inclusive learning strategies, and autonomous support facilitate students' behavioural and cognitive engagement, a supportive climate is considered to enhance students' emotional engagement. The study also identifies other relevant stakeholders who can work with lecturers to facilitate engagement rather than operating in silos.

Research approaches to better engage student learning regarding the determinants of health are somewhat limited. The present study highlights the evolution of an authentic fieldwork assessment and the strategies nursing students used as they navigated the assessment for learning activity outside the classroom, and how these impacted student's performance. A cross-sectional study examined learning strategies, assessment challenges and concept understanding according to academic performance among students over a 2-year period. Among the 282 (19.7% response rate) students, success encapsulated making time, planning, good organisation, checking in and making time. Being less successful centred on being busy with other courses or employment. Poorer performing students were less likely to understand the assessment requirements or just ran out of time. Performance-based assessments remain relevant to nursing student learning. However, students must explicitly understand their benefits, be motivated to engage, have the capacity to persevere and seek clarification if understanding is not achieved.

The article addresses the challenges of distance education, i.e. how to manage the pedagogical process of project-based learning (PBL). The research objective was to use PBL as a teaching method where students learn by actively participating in a real professional task -- preparing antenatal classes for future parents. We were also interested in developing recommendations for teachers and organisations using PBL in distance education. The study was conducted as mixed-methods research, using qualitative and quantitative data. Forty-four students and 131 future parents participated in the study. Results showed the importance of managing the PBL: learning environment, teamwork, mentoring and the use of information technologies and tools for learning purposes with appropriate didactic and learning strategies. The pedagogical process of PBL in distance education is based on interactive modelling of ICT and virtual reality with didactically integrating professional knowledge and skills in the virtual pedagogical process.

Purpose: This study addresses gaps in the existing literature on students' understanding of Independent Learning (IL), whilst exploring the link between levels of IL, growth mindset, motivated strategies for learning and academic performance. Design/methodology/approach: Three hundred and eighty-six university students recruited via opportunistic sampling completed an online survey to measure: understanding and level of IL, Motivated Strategies for Learning (MSL) (Duncan and McKeachie, 2005) and growth mindset (Dweck, 2000). Interaction with the university Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) and academic grades were also measured. A correlational design was implemented, and a Spearman Rho was calculated to explore the relationship between level of IL, MSL and growth mindset. A between-subjects design using independent measures t-test was employed to determine the significance of any difference in level of IL and VLE engagement according to academic grade. Findings: Whilst most students: considered themselves an IL and understood what IL was, the majority erroneously believed it meant learning alone or without help. Level of IL, however, was positively associated with motivational beliefs (self-efficacy and mindset), cognitive strategies (rehearsal, elaboration, organisation and critical thinking), and metacognitive strategies (time management and self-regulation). Further, those with grades A-C scored significantly higher than those with grades D and below on cognitive strategies (elaboration and organisation). Those attaining higher grades also interacted with the VLE significantly more frequently and regularly than those attaining lower grades. Originality/value: This study adds to the existing literature by highlighting the positive relationship between level of IL, MSL, mindset and academic achievement. It also addresses the under-explored potential for VLE engagement in predicting grades amongst on-campus courses. Given that cognitive strategies and VLE engagement differentiate the high and low achievers, interventions to develop such skills may enhance academic achievement.

Purpose: This study adds to the existing body of knowledge on the benefits to learners of using an interdisciplinary design thinking (DT) pedagogical approach taking the form of a micro credential with an extra curricula workshop. Design/methodology/approach: The interpretivist research examined opinion via nine semi-structured interviews with learners who had participated in a workshop. The interviews focussed on demographic information, learning strategies, workshop interdisciplinary benefits and being taught via DT. The recorded interviews and transcriptions were analysed via NVivo and content analysis. Findings: The results are themed into development opportunities, future learning, making meaning and sense and practical application of knowledge and skills reflection for the students. The DT pedagogy worked well for the students who confirmed university learning should be this way, adding to the debate on embedding engaging interdisciplinary methods to embed entrepreneurship and innovation in the curriculum. Originality/value: The research is original as the use of DT has added value to the students' development and mindset. Developing graduates this way benefits the local and national economy, as the reach of graduates' transferability makes them fit for the future.

The purpose of this study aimed to investigate the impact of incorporating a scripted collaborative learning strategy into digital storytelling (DST) on the vocabulary acquisition, creativity and writing skills of EFL college students. While DST has been previously utilised in English language education, it faces several challenges. To address these challenges, this study introduced a scripted collaborative strategy designed to enhance the digital storytelling creation process. An experimental comparison between scripted and non-scripted collaborative digital storytelling projects was conducted to assess their effects on students' creativity and writing skills. The findings revealed that the scripted collaborative DST approach markedly improved students' vocabulary acquisition, graphic creativity and writing skills compared to the non-scripted collaborative DST group. This research underscores the potential benefits of digital storytelling in advancing English language learning, offering valuable insights into its effective implementation.

The aim of this study is to deepen the understanding of how preschool teachers can use representations of different kinds to bring fore the mathematical content that may be afforded in pictures and narrative designed for numerical learning purposes. Seventy-three video documentations of reading sessions with 27 toddlers (1-3 years of age) over the course of three semesters were analyzed with a focus on number-oriented actions that, theoretically, would facilitate toddlers' learning of numbers. In the reading sessions the teachers extended the content of the pictures and the narrative in different ways, and how one and the same picture was handled was shown to impact on what was made possible for the children to discern. Three different objects of learning--"identifying numbers, comparing numbers," and "operating on numbers"--were made visible. Further, the use of gestures strengthened the possibility for the children to make connections within and between representations. This contributes to our understanding of the importance of using representations and gestures with a pedagogical purpose.

ChatGPT has emerged as a transformative technology with its remarkable ability to generate human-like responses, propelling its widespread adoption. While prior research has investigated the general landscape of AI-driven tools such as ChatGPT, the current study focuses specifically on exploring learners' experiences and perceptions regarding the utilization of ChatGPT as a learning assistant tool. Data was collected through professional social media platforms from learners and analyzed inductively using ATLAS.ti to identify recurring themes. The findings revealed several crucial themes including personalized interactive learning, language support, writing and research assistance, task and concept clarification. Additionally, learners found it to be time-efficient and easy to access information. Concerns were raised regarding its limitations and risks such as the hindrance to critical thinking and independent research skills, difficulties in engaging with longer texts for deeper comprehension, and the possibility of writing style homogenization and loss of uniqueness among others. The results highlighted several essential strategies adopted by learners to optimize ChatGPT usage as a learning tool. In addition, most users demonstrated a preference for spending much time using ChatGPT compared to other digital information tools, signalling a paradigm shift toward increased utilization of generative AI in learning. The study underscores the significance of adopting a balanced approach, and advocates for further research on the impact of AI-driven tools like ChatGPT. The findings have important implications for learners, educators, and policymakers regarding the use of ChatGPT in education.

Effective learning strategies based on principles like personalization, retrieval practice, and spaced repetition are often challenging to implement due to practical constraints. Here we explore the integration of AI tutors to complement learning programs in accordance with learning sciences. A semester-long study was conducted at UniDistance Suisse, where an AI tutor app was provided to psychology students taking a neuroscience course (N=51). After automatically generating microlearning questions from existing course materials using GPT-3, the AI tutor developed a dynamic neural-network model of each student's grasp of key concepts. This enabled the implementation of distributed retrieval practice, personalized to each student's individual level and abilities. The results indicate that students who actively engaged with the AI tutor achieved significantly higher grades. Moreover, active engagement led to an average improvement of up to 15 percentile points compared to a parallel course without AI tutor. Additionally, the grasp strongly correlated with the exam grade, thus validating the relevance of neural-network predictions. This research demonstrates the ability of personal AI tutors to model human learning processes and effectively enhance academic performance. By integrating AI tutors into their programs, educators can offer students personalized learning experiences grounded in the principles of learning sciences, thereby addressing the challenges associated with implementing effective learning strategies. These findings contribute to the growing body of knowledge on the transformative potential of AI in education.

Recent literature emphasises the role of exploration, designerly play, creative thinking, and handling of materials in the beginning years of learning. This paper reports findings from a study involving 24 children (aged 4 to 10 years), where the researchers engaged with four-story contexts (tasks) that had embedded problem scenarios. In response to problems presented in the stories, children were invited to express their design ideas through drawings and oral expressions. Analysis of the children's work yielded insights into design thinking and revealed the cognitive strategies children used for addressing different kinds of problem scenarios. The experience offers significant takeaways for designing contextually appropriate curricular engagements in the early and primary years.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of using a jigsaw learning strategy integrated with computer simulation (JLSICS) on the academic achievement and attitudes of students, along with exploring the relationships between them in the process of learning about acids and bases. Design/methodology/approach: The research design used in the study was quasi-experimental, using non-equivalent comparison groups for both pre- and post-tests. A quantitative approach was used to address the research problem, with three groups involved: two experimental and one comparative group. The treatment group, which received the JLSICS intervention, consisted of two intact classes, while the comparison group included one intact class. Data collection involved achievement tests and attitude scale tests on acid and base. Various statistical analyses such as one-way analysis of variance, one-way multivariate analysis of variance, Pearson product-moment correlation, mean and standard deviation were used for data analysis. Findings: The study's results revealed that the incorporation of the JLSICS had a beneficial influence on the academic achievement and attitudes of grade 10 chemistry students towards acid and base topics. The JLSICS approach proved to be more successful than both conventional methods and the standalone use of the jigsaw learning strategy (JLS) in terms of both achievement and attitudes. The research demonstrated a correlation between positive attitudes towards chemistry among high school students and enhanced achievement in the subject. Research limitations/implications: The study only focused on one specific aspect of chemistry (acid and base chemistry), which restricts the applicability of the findings to other chemistry topics or subjects. In addition, the study used a quasi-experimental design with a pretest-posttest comparison group, which may introduce variables that could confound the results and restrict causal inferences. Practical implications: This study addresses the gap in instructional interventions and provides theoretical and practical insights. It emphasizes the importance of incorporating contemporary instructional methods for policymakers, benefiting the government, society and students. By enhancing student achievement, attitudes and critical thinking skills, this approach empowers students to take charge of their learning, fostering deep understanding and analysis. Furthermore, JLSICS aids in grasping abstract chemistry concepts and has the potential to reduce costs associated with purchasing chemicals for schools. This research opens doors for similar studies in different educational settings, offering valuable insights for educators and policymakers. Originality/value: The originality and value of this study are in its exploration of integrating the jigsaw learning strategy with computer simulations as an instructional approach in chemistry education. This research contributes to the existing literature by showing the effectiveness of JLSICS in improving students' achievements and attitudes towards acid and base topics. It also emphasizes the importance of fostering positive attitudes towards chemistry to enhance students' overall achievement in the subject.

This study examined the effectiveness of a career course designed to increase career self-efficacy and exploration among undergraduate students from a university in Taiwan. A quasi-experimental study was conducted to compare a group of students who completed high-intensity action-based assignments (experimental group, n = 74) with another group that was assigned low-intensity action-based assignments (n = 197). Both groups answered the questionnaires in the first and eighteenth weeks of the course. Repeated measure analyses were conducted to examine the differences between the responses of both groups before and after taking the course. The results indicated that the career course could improve the students' career self-efficacy (t = -12.4, p < 0.001) and exploration (t = -15.1, p < 0.001). Although the results confirmed that high-intensity action-based assignments could enhance students' career exploration (t = -2.62, p < 0.01), neither group showed any improvement in terms of career self-efficacy. The control group exhibited higher career self-efficacy after attending the course than did the experimental group (t = 2.74, p < 0.01). The implications and scope for further research are also discussed.

Graphical literacy or graphicacy is a critical component of scientific literacy. Graphs are used to integrate and represent complex sets of information requiring abstraction from perceptual experience. They form essential parts of the Mathematics and Science curriculum across school curricular stages. A key to developing meaningful pedagogic practices to inculcate graphical literacy is in understanding how students perceive and comprehend features of graphs and interpret them. This study attempts to understand how children from the primary, middle and high school years, perceive and interpret information in bar and line graphs. Two hundred and twenty-nine children from four different school contexts in Grades 5, 7 and 9 were administered questionnaires and interviewed based on tasks requiring comprehension of graphs. It was found that children's understanding of graphs was tied to the curricular progression which was significant at Grades 5 and 9. Comprehension of bar graphs with nominal data was easier compared to line graphs requiring integration of information from two dimensions and interpreting them. Further, graphs requiring preliminary levels of statistical understanding were easier to comprehend. While prior experience and facility with graphical conventions played a role, interpretation from spatial to symbolic representations posed challenges. Students did not have a clearly preferred strategy or a linear comprehension trajectory, but moved back and forth between conventions, clustering of graphical elements and written content in questions, to make meaning. Those who had performed well used various perceptual strategies simultaneously. Further, they were found to employ transformational reasoning based on a sense of 'how things work'. It was observed that meaningful pedagogic practices at school and informal experiences outside the classroom aid graphical literacy.

Organic chemistry presents a significant obstacle for students seeking entry into health-related professions. Students' ability to develop effective study approaches is an important predictor of success in the course. Herein, we report an investigation utilizing an OCH-adjusted M-ASSIST instrument to assess possible changes in students' study approaches in the Organic Chemistry I course. Surveys for this study were completed in October and December of the first semester of the Organic Chemistry I course at the University of Kansas and afforded 84 individually paired responses. Furthermore, students' attitudes toward utilizing supplementary study tools(Study Cards and Concept Maps) were interrogated by a four-question survey administered on the same dates. Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) of the responses to the OCH-adjusted M-ASSIST instrument revealed a notable difference in a few individual factor loadings between the models for the October and December data as well as an increase in a negative covariance between the Deep and Surface learning factors. Analysis of these changes between the models for the October and December data utilizing the chi-square difference ([chi][subscript [DIF]][superscript 2]) test for pairs of nested SEM (structural equation modeling) models including the assessment of statistical power, yielded two significant conclusions. First, a statistically significant negative correlation between Deep and Surface learning develops only after the October sampling date and is present only in the models for the December data. Second, a response shift (reprioritization, which means a change in factor loadings) was detected in student responses to the OCH-adjusted M-ASSIST instrument and involves a single item (a question from the "relating ideas" subsection of the instrument) loading on the Deep learning factor. However, the average learning scores (both Deep and Surface) in this longitudinal did not change across the study time frame. Responses to questions regarding the use of Study Cards and Concept Maps revealed that a significant decrease in students' ability to apply these study tools toward meaningful learning occurred by the end of the semester. The greatest effect size was noted for students' assessment of their use of Concept Maps, potentially indicating challenges they experience when processing material of increasing complexity. Our results suggest that an important reevaluation, or self-reassessment in students' study approaches, is taking place in the second half of the Organic Chemistry I course demonstrating that the same group of students changes their interpretation of a single item on the instrument. Conceivably the students perceive the process of "relating ideas" differently or with a changed emphasis toward the end of the semester (reprioritization). Furthermore, students develop a more defined study approach that either gravitates more strongly toward the Deep learning or toward the Surface learning approaches, rather than a mixture of both. These insights have both fundamental significance for the understanding of the learning process and practical implications for the designs of teaching methodologies.

Repeating patterning proficiency predicts students' later mathematical proficiency. A comparative multi-case design enabled the present study to compare patterning success and strategy use for repeating patterns of 75 Norwegian 6-year-old grade 1 students. We provided the students with duplicate, extend, transfer, and unit isolation activities in a semi-structured, task-based interview that was video-recorded. The students' number sense was also measured using a digital assessment. In-depth analysis of 52 students (divided evenly into two groups based on their number sense scores, lowest and highest) was performed. A statistically significant group difference was found for extend activities. Multimodal video analysis of strategies employed revealed that both student groups used recursive and different strategies and only students with high number sense used relational strategies. The students with low number sense used more variants of recursive patterning strategies. Our findings also demonstrated that attention to pattern features may both hinder identification of a pattern's underlying structure and reflect advanced strategy use rather than not showing pattern awareness. We discuss group differences in terms of decomposition and awareness of mathematical pattern and structure and emphasise the need for scaffolding awareness of mathematical pattern and structure through communication.

Purpose: In recent years, digital projects have created tools for learning languages, such as mobile applications (apps). In contexts where the language has low prestige, innovative digital learning tools can support language revitalisation. This article takes the Australian Kaytetye Indigemoji app as a case study in community resource development. It aims to do two things: (1) show how resource development can be a vital forum for language teaching and learning; and (2) assess the affordances of digital images--fundamental to the Indigemoji app--for Indigenous language learning. Methodology: Taking an ethnographic approach encompassing informal conversation and participant observation embedded in relevant literature, we analyse the community workshop where the Kaytetye Indigemoji app was developed. Findings: We find that the development process can provide an essential language-learning activity. We also find that visual opportunities presented by the app harness existing multimodal practices in central Australian Indigenous communities, including symbolic art and a highly developed alternate sign language. We show that effective digital learning resources can be built through community development processes which engage with local learning methods. Value: This research identifies how digital resource development can be harnessed to be maximally useful for Indigenous language learning in a small and relatively disadvantaged area in Australia.

Deaf aesthetics is a theoretical framework we actualized to enhance interactions in deaf education, particularly via multimodal pedagogy and curricular experiences. Prior research illustrates that deaf aesthetics are desired by deaf teachers and students who are deaf; however, most instructional-delivery formats lack these supports. The present mixed-methodology, multi-method case study is an empirical evaluation of how deaf aesthetics contributed to the process of redesigning a course, including major revisions to instructional slide decks (e.g., PowerPoint, Google Slides, Prezi). The research question we examined is: "How can instructional designers and university educators effectively design and use deaf aesthetics and multimodal curricula and pedagogies to prompt and sustain educational interactions with deaf or deafblind learners and teachers?"

During their first year of study at university, many students encounter challenges in developing learning strategies that align with success in the courses in which they are enrolled. The emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic heightened the challenges as universities were compelled to transition to online learning. Therefore, this study investigated the self-reported use of learning strategies in a first-year chemistry course delivered online due to the COVID-19 pandemic to identify learning strategies associated with success. Grounded in self-regulated learning (SRL) theory, a case study approach with an explanatory mixed methods design was adopted. Quantitative data were collected using a hybrid of the Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire and the Online Self-regulated Learning Questionnaire. Follow-up open-ended questions were emailed to the students for the qualitative part of the study. Statistical analysis of the quantitative data was performed using SPSS and RUMM2030, while thematic analysis was applied to the qualitative data. Students reported more frequent use of SRL strategies of environment structuring, effort regulation, and elaboration. Conversely, critical thinking, task strategies, help-seeking, and peer learning were reportedly used less often. SRL strategies linked with success in the course were identified as effort regulation, goal setting, and time management. The findings from the qualitative data revealed an impact of online learning due to the pandemic on the use of peer learning and help-seeking strategies. The paper discusses the implications of these findings for educational practices, particularly in the context of hybrid learning in the post-pandemic era.

General chemistry is often the first course taken by students interested in careers in STEM and health fields, and therefore, is considered an essential course for the success and retention of students in these fields. Prior studies have shown study habits and skills to be related to student performance in college-level courses, including STEM courses. Previous chemistry studies have focused on deep "versus" surface approaches to studying, how affective variables (e.g., self-efficacy) affect study habits, and how students study week to week. Literature has also shown that students' management of their general study time can impact their performance, with distraction while studying becoming an increasing challenge for students. This study examined first-semester general-chemistry students' study behaviors (both their explicit learning strategies and study-time management practices) focusing on their exam preparation and that relationship to exam performance when controlling for prior knowledge and class attendance. Key findings include: (1) students, on average, employed two active strategies for exam preparation, dedicated half of their study time to active strategies, and were distracted 26% of the time. (2) While active strategies positively influenced exam performance and passive strategies had a negative impact, not all active strategies were equally effective. (3) The percentage of study time spent on active strategies correlated positively with performance, whereas higher distraction levels during exam preparation negatively affected outcomes. Understanding student exam-study behaviors and their effects on exam performance can help instructors support students more effectively by teaching them study strategies effective for their courses.

Recent studies in psychology emphasize the pivotal roles of adopting a growth mindset to enhance students' motivation and employing effective memory strategies to improve memory performance. This study evaluated the impact of a metacognitive intervention that combined the promotion of a growth mindset with the teaching of efficient learning strategies. Using a pre-post experimental design with fourth- and fifth-graders, we examined the effect of the intervention on motivation and learning outcomes compared to an active control group. The results revealed that the metacognitive intervention produced a shift toward a more malleable intelligence belief, which in turn led to a more positive conception of effort. It also modified their memory strategies, leading to better memory performance. The paper discusses the effectiveness of metacognitive programs that combine motivational and strategic elements, highlighting their potential to foster academic outcomes. This integrative approach may significantly enhance children's metacognitive capacities, contributing to improved academic achievement.

Purpose: This paper explores current teaching and learning practices, benefits and challenges in the implementation of Internationalization at Home (IaH) in higher education. Design/methodology/approach: The study follows a systematic review (SR) protocol in accordance with the PRISMA Statement, covering published research from 2018 to 2022. Through this process, we identified 58 peer-reviewed manuscripts meeting our inclusion criteria. We examined disciplines, locations of IaH, objectives pursued, modality of the IaH implementation, activities and resources used. Benefits and challenges were also analysed. Findings: The SR reveals a growing adoption of IaH, employing various technologies and interdisciplinary methods to foster cross-cultural competence. It emphasizes diverse teaching activities and resources, aligning with digitalization trends. While IaH brings benefits like improved intercultural sensitivity, collaboration and skills development, it also faces challenges in language, technical, personal, pedagogical and organizational aspects, highlighting its complexity. Research limitations/implications: Our search focused on research from 2018 to 2022, potentially missing earlier trends, and excluded grey literature due to quality concerns. The SR emphasizes online collaborative efforts in IaH, signalling a shift to digital internationalization. Institutions should invest in supporting such practices aided by strategic university alliances. A critical approach to "Global-North" collaborations is urged, promoting geographically inclusive IaH initiatives. Originality/value: This study responds to the call for critical analysis on concrete examples of IaH. Through a systematic review, it explores recent teaching and learning practices, with a particular focus on the latest technological advancements. The study specifies learning objectives and identifies relevant tools for implementing IaH initiatives.

It is known that teacher noticing skills improve through different interventions such as video clubs, lesson study, and short-term professional development programs. However, it is not known whether this improvement is permanent and whether teachers can transfer their noticing skills into the classroom. It is extremely important to provide an enduring change in teacher noticing skills. Rather than short-term programs, implementing long-running professional development programs, which last almost 2 years, enables teachers to maintain their noticing skills. At this point, the current study aims to develop in-service middle school mathematics teachers' professional noticing of students' mathematical thinking on pattern generalization during their involvement in a 2-year online professional development program enriched with collaborative discussion. Accordingly, the study was built on the professional noticing of children's mathematical thinking framework, including three noticing skills: attending, interpreting, and deciding how to respond. Participants comprised 31 in-service middle school mathematics teachers with up to 15 years of professional experience working in public schools in seven different provinces of Türkiye. The teachers participated in the online PDP, including scenarios involving student strategies of particular mathematics content. The analysis of the data gathered from the pre-test and post-test let us conclude that the three noticing skills of the in-service middle school teachers exhibited incredible progress through their involvement in collaborative discussion in a long-running online PDP. Based on this result, the characteristics of the online PDP are put forth to develop teachers' noticing skills.

The imagination effect occurs when learners who imagine a procedure perform better on a subsequent test than learners who study it. The present study explored whether this effect is restricted to short-term learning or whether it also applies when learning is tested after a delay. Forty novices and forty experts learned about a basketball game system and were instructed to either listen and memorize (no-imagination condition) or imagine and memorize (imagination condition) the tactical instructions given orally. The results indicated that experts who imagined the material performed better in both immediate and delayed knowledge tests than experts who simply studied the same material, indicating a robust effect of the imagination in experts. However, the results showed that novices performed well in the immediate knowledge test under the no-imagination condition, but this effect was reversed in the delayed knowledge test, making imagination more beneficial. These findings indicate that the effectiveness of imagination over time depends on the level of expertise of the players.

Purpose: This paper aims to examine uncertain situations with potential for learning in care work. While the dominant learning strategy in elderly care is lecture-based education, learning from and during daily care work routines is crucial and suitable. However, little is known about the potential for learning in daily work in elderly care. Design/methodology/approach: This paper is based on a doctoral study conducted in Danish nursing homes. Shadowing care workers led to the construction of care work vignettes, which were analyzed and validated in analytic dialogues with field practitioners. Here, a selected vignette forms the empirical base for analyzing uncertainty through the lens of Dewey's philosophy of learning. Findings: The results suggest labeling uncertain situations as noisy, as they are sensorily felt, prompting doubt and perplexity and, hence, reflection and learning. Noisy situations cause breakdowns in action experienced as a tension that triggers reflection, often with colleagues, alongside work. A critical discussion draws attention to silent situations that proceed undisturbedly, according to routine, and, hence, often without reflection. To handle uncertainty, either noisy or silent, care workers must be considered as learning actors. Space and time for reflection are mandatory. Originality/value: By focusing on uncertainty in care work, this study contributes to the understanding of workplace learning potential by clarifying the characteristics of situations useful for systematic exploration and collaborative learning from specific instances in work.

Despite the global adoption of Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) and extensive research on the effectiveness (product-oriented) and classroom interactions (process-oriented) of CLIL, existing studies have overlooked the motivational beliefs and metacognitive strategies of CLIL students. Hence, there is a need for a participant-oriented approach to better understand students' perspectives and enhance CLIL's success. Drawing on the social cognitive model of self-regulated learning (SRL), this study aimed to explore how students plan, monitor, and evaluate their learning in CLIL contexts by employing a novel vignette-based microanalytic assessment approach to empirically capture students' SRL processes. Participants were 108 junior secondary school students from three schools in Hong Kong. Data were analysed using structuring qualitative content analysis. Findings revealed that students employed diverse strategies to manage the demands of language and content learning, with variations in self-efficacy beliefs influencing their approaches. Furthermore, some learners faced challenges in maintaining effective self-regulation. This study argues that improving self-regulatory processes and enhancing CLIL's success requires prioritising assessment, considering the state of 'others', and fostering deeper learning beyond CLIL. This study contributes to the empirical, methodological, and pedagogical understanding of students' SRL in CLIL settings and informs future research on student-focused aspects in CLIL.
