Summary Water use efficiency (WUE) represents the trade‐off between carbon assimilation and water loss in plants. It remains unclear how leaf stomatal and photosynthetic traits regulate the spatial variation of leaf WUE in different natural forest ecosystems. We investigated 43 broad‐leaf tree species spanning from cold‐temperate to tropical forests in China. We quantified leaf WUE using leaf δ13C and measured stomatal traits, photosynthetic traits as well as maximum stomatal conductance (Gwmax$$ {G}_{{\mathrm{w}}_{\mathrm{max}}} $$) and maximum carboxylation capacity (Vcmax$$ {V}_{{\mathrm{c}}_{\mathrm{max}}} $$). We found that leaves in cold‐temperate forests displayed ‘fast’ carbon economics, characterized by higher leaf nitrogen, Chl, specific leaf area, and Vcmax$$ {V}_{{\mathrm{c}}_{\mathrm{max}}} $$, as an adaptation to the shorter growing season. However, these leaves exhibited ‘slow’ hydraulic traits, with larger but fewer stomata and similar Gwmax$$ {G}_{{\mathrm{w}}_{\mathrm{max}}} $$, resulting in higher leaf WUE. By contrast, leaves in tropical forests had smaller and denser stomata, enabling swift response to heterogeneous light conditions. However, this stomatal configuration increased potential water loss, and coupled with their low photosynthetic capacity, led to lower WUE. Our findings contribute to understanding how plant photosynthetic and stomatal traits regulate carbon–water trade‐offs across climatic gradients, advancing our ability to predict the impacts of climate changes on forest carbon and water cycles. Understanding covariation patterns of drought resistance, post-drought recovery and phenotypic plasticity, and their variability at the intra-population level are crucial for predicting forest vulnerability to increasing aridity. This knowledge is particularly urgent at the trailing range edge since, in these areas, tree species are proximal to their ecological niche boundaries. While this proximity increases their susceptibility, these populations are recognized as valuable genetic reservoirs against environmental stressors. The conservation of this genetic variability is critical for the adaptive capacity of the species in the current context of climate change. Here we examined intra-population patterns of stem basal growth, gas exchange and other leaf functional traits in response to an experimental drought in seedlings of 16 open-pollinated families within a marginal population of European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) from its southern range edge. We found a high degree of intra-population variation in leaf functional traits, photosynthetic performance, growth patterns and phenotypic plasticity in response to water availability. Low phenotypic plasticity was associated with higher resistance to drought. Both drought resistance and post-drought recovery of photosynthetic performance varied between maternal lines. However, drought resistance and post-drought recovery exhibited independent variation. We also found intra-population variation in stomatal sensitivity to soil drying, but it was not associated with either drought resistance or post-drought recovery. We conclude that an inverse relationship between phenotypic plasticity and drought resistance is not necessarily a sign of maladaptive plasticity, but rather it may reflect stability of functional performance and hence adaptation to withstand drought. The independent variation found between drought resistance and post-drought recovery should facilitate to some extent microevolution and adaption to increasing aridity. The observed variability in stomatal sensitivity to soil drying was consistent with previous findings at other scales (e.g. inter-specific variation, inter-population variation) that challenge the iso-anisohydric concept as a reliable surrogate of drought tolerance. Recent investigations have revealed the coordination and trade-offs between above- and belowground traits in structuring functional strategies of plant communities, but none of these have addressed ferns, a diverse plant lineage in tropical forests. We investigated terrestrial ferns from the perspective of how below- and aboveground traits are coordinated with functional responses to forest edges, which represent a significant part of the world's forest cover. Specifically, we examined differences in functional strategies between forest edges and forest interior as well as traits associated with species dominance. Fern richness and abundance were sampled in 24 edge plots and 44 interior plots within the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. We obtained data for five leaf traits and three rhizome traits. Ferns did not express any functional coordination between above- and belowground traits. At the edge, ferns did not display functional homogenization. In both the interior and at the edge, ferns exhibited multiple trait covariations across a broad spectrum of plant sizes and leaf numbers, associated with rhizome type and the presence of leaf trichomes and stolons. There were no cohesive functional groups of generalists or of exclusive species of forest edges and the forest interior. Fern species dominance was related to the species-specific number of leaves and the presence of stolons. We conclude that below- and aboveground traits did neither respond in conjunction nor as a functional response to edge effects. Herbaceous plants can form root systems by investing in one main taproot or many adventitious roots. While monocots have adventitious systems, eudicots can have either type in different species and even within a single species depending on its age, environment, or injury. Although clearly different, we know little about their relationship to ecological functions and response. We used Plantago lanceolata, a species that can have either root system and forms adventitious buds on roots, to test methods to form plants with a taproot, adventitious roots, or that grow from a root fragment, to obtain individuals of comparable size. We first evaluated injury response and root traits, then used selected models in a pilot study. For the pilot study, we selected an adventitious root model procedure with root removal from approximately 5-day-old seedlings at 1-2 mm below the stem base (hypocotyl) and rootsprout model of the topmost 4 cm of the taproot from 4-week-old plants. We planted adventitious and taprooted plants in three urban lawns and harvested them after three months. Adventitious and tap-rooted plants were similarly affected by competition, producing lower biomass of leaves and stem in more competitive lawns. Root and leaf traits were consistent regardless of architecture type. Plantago lanceolata fully compensated early loss of the taproot when injured at about 10 days old, and in mesic conditions both root architectures perform similarly. Understanding plant adaptive strategies to aridity is crucial for ecological research, particularly in the current context of climate change and increasing drought. This study focuses on the intraspecific phenotypic variation of the wild olive (Olea europaea subsp. europaea var. sylvestris), one of the most emblematic species of the Mediterranean Basin, widely distributed in Morocco. The research is based on measuring nine leaf and plant-size related traits in 130 trees across 13 populations under varying climate conditions and vegetation covers. The study explores the adaptive strategies of wild olive trees in response to increasing aridity and aridification. The results indicate that the nine traits exhibit significant covariation trends along environmental gradients, reflecting plant strategies related to resource acquisition, resource investment, and water use. Wild olive trees demonstrate substantial intraspecific variation both among and within populations in response to these environmental gradients. Climate, altitude, and vegetation cover together explain 93.8% of the trait covariations. The study elucidates the mechanisms underlying the adaptive strategies of wild olive trees to cope with stressful conditions. The findings suggest that wild olive trees adapt to stressful environments by adopting a conservative strategy, characterized by lower resource investment and higher water-use efficiency. This research underscores the importance of considering intraspecific variation in plant responses to environmental stressors and demonstrates the utility of trait-based approaches in understanding plant strategies under such conditions. Urban air pollution poses a significant threat to human health, with metropolitan areas particularly affected due to high emissions from human activities. Particulate matter (PMx) is among the most harmful pollutants to human health, being composed of a complex mixture of substances related to severe pulmonary conditions. Urban green spaces play a vital role in mitigating air pollution by capturing PMx, and it is essential to select plant species with a high capacity for PMx accumulation to effectively enhance air quality. This study aimed to evaluate and compare the accuracy of two PMx quantification methods—light microscopy and filtration—which demonstrated a high correlation (R2 = 0.72), suggesting that both methods are reliable for assessing PMx accumulation on leaves. Light microscopy allowed for the visualization of PMx deposition, revealing the species warranting further analysis using the filtration method. Among the species analyzed, Euonymus japonicus, Ligustrum lucidum, Alnus glutinosa, Rubus ulmifolius, and Laurus nobilis demonstrated the highest total PMx accumulation, exceeding 50 µg cm−2, making them particularly valuable for air pollution mitigation. This study examined the correlation between leaf traits such as specific leaf area (SLA), leaf area (LA), leaf dissection index (LDI), and leaf roundness and PMx accumulation across the 30 different plant species. A multiple linear regression analysis indicated that these leaf traits significantly influenced PMx accumulation, with SLA and LA showing negative correlations and leaf roundness exhibiting a positive correlation with PMx deposition. In conclusion, this study highlights the importance of selecting plant species with specific leaf traits for effective air quality improvement in urban environments particularly in highly polluted areas, to enhance air quality and public health. Rarely do we observe competitive exclusion within plant communities, even though plants compete for a limited pool of resources. Thus, our understanding of the mechanisms sustaining plant biodiversity might be limited. In this study, we explore two common ecological strategies, species sorting and character displacement, that promote coexistence by reducing competition. We assess the degree to which woody plants may implement these two strategies to lower belowground competition for nutrients which occurs via nutritional (mostly mycorrhizal) mutualisms. First, we compile data on plant traits and the mycorrhizal association state of woody angiosperms using a global inventory of indigenous flora. Our analysis reveals that species in locations with high mycorrhizal diversity exhibit distinct mean values in leaf area and wood density based on their mycorrhizal type, indicating species sorting. Second, we reanalyse a large dataset on leaf area to demonstrate that in areas with high mycorrhizal diversity, trees maintain divergent leaf area values, showcasing character displacement. Character displacement among plants is considered rare, making our observation significant. In summary, our study uncovers a rare occurrence of character displacement and identifies a common mechanism employed by plants to alleviate competition, shedding light on the complexities of plant coexistence in diverse ecosystems. Summary: Leaf traits are essential for understanding many physiological and ecological processes. Partial least squares regression (PLSR) models with leaf spectroscopy are widely applied for trait estimation, but their transferability across space, time, and plant functional types (PFTs) remains unclear.We compiled a novel dataset of paired leaf traits and spectra, with 47 393 records for > 700 species and eight PFTs at 101 globally distributed locations across multiple seasons. Using this dataset, we conducted an unprecedented comprehensive analysis to assess the transferability of PLSR models in estimating leaf traits.While PLSR models demonstrate commendable performance in predicting chlorophyll content, carotenoid, leaf water, and leaf mass per area prediction within their training data space, their efficacy diminishes when extrapolating to new contexts. Specifically, extrapolating to locations, seasons, and PFTs beyond the training data leads to reduced R2 (0.12–0.49, 0.15–0.42, and 0.25–0.56) and increased NRMSE (3.58–18.24%, 6.27–11.55%, and 7.0–33.12%) compared with nonspatial random cross‐validation. The results underscore the importance of incorporating greater spectral diversity in model training to boost its transferability.These findings highlight potential errors in estimating leaf traits across large spatial domains, diverse PFTs, and time due to biased validation schemes, and provide guidance for future field sampling strategies and remote sensing applications. Shade trees in agroforestry systems confer ecosystem services, such as enhanced soil fertility from diverse litter inputs, microclimate regulation via shade, and disease mitigation through trophic and abiotic interactions. With this thriving role of agroforestry in sustainable agriculture, particularly for tree crops, systematic and reliable methods to select shade trees for specific agroecosystem outcomes are crucial.Plant functional traits offer a framework to describe, select and manage shade trees. Over the last decade, shade tree leaf functional traits and whole plant traits have been assessed in agroforestry systems. Yet, we lack amalgamated information on (i) what we know about shade tree trait relationships with functions to achieve desired agroecosystem outcomes, (ii) how decades of shade tree selection by farmers impacts agroforests inter‐ and intraspecific trait diversity, and (iii) which shade tree traits should be considered for achieving farmer priorities.We consolidate literature on Coffea arabica (coffee) and Theobroma cacao (cocoa) agroforestry systems to summarize the role of shade tree functional traits in three key ecosystem functions: soil fertility, microclimate modification and crop productivity. We compile global and regional datasets on tree functional trait diversity to show the functional space of agroforestry tree species compared with the overall functional space observed in plants.Despite, or maybe because of, high shade tree diversity, shade tree trait characterization remains coarse and commonly measured at the community scale in the literature. Based on published trait data, we show that farmers adjust the functional composition of shade trees to increase the recycling of soil nutrients (high leaf nitrogen), the production of wood (skewing towards lower wood densities) and the production of fruits (tendency towards high seed size). Common shade trees in coffee and cocoa systems fall in the mid‐range of leaf acquisitive to conservative strategies, providing evidence that expanding shade tree portfolios can improve, or even accelerate, functions.Synthesis and applications: Based on the agroforestry literature and on trait‐environment relationships, we propose a matrix of shade tree traits that influence desirable agroecosystem outcomes for farmers, which can guide fine‐scale coordination of trait expression and agroforestry functions. Leaf traits and chloroplast structure have a direct impact on plant growth rates. Fast-growing species allocate more carbon to growth, and slow-growing species invest more in storage. This study was conducted to investigate the fast-growing mechanism of the introduced mangrove species Laguncularia racemosa, by comparing the leaves of L. racemosa and three slow-growing native mangrove species (Kandelia obovata, Avicennia marina, and Aegiceras corniculatum) through analysis of anisotropic growth of leaf traits and leaf chloroplast ultrastructure. The results showed that the largest slope values were found in the leaf area compared to leaf perimeter relationship (2.035), while the slope of the leaf perimeter compared to leaf width relationship was only 0.832. And the leaf area of A. marina was most influenced by leaf perimeter, while the leaf area of L. racemosa was least influenced by leaf perimeter. Furthermore, the average area of thylakoid lamellae per chloroplast was the largest in L. racemosa leaves, with no accumulation of starch granules detected. While most of the chloroplast area of three native mangrove species was occupied by starch granules and lipid droplets, resulting in a reduction in the thylakoid lamellae contained per unit area of the chloroplasts. These results imply that the chloroplasts of L. racemosa can transport photosynthetic products to other organs of the plant in a timely manner, maximizing the area of thylakoid lamellae in the chloroplast and enabling its leaves to maintain high photosynthesis for its rapid growth. Summary: Turgor loss point (TLP) is an important proxy for plant drought tolerance, species habitat suitability, and drought‐induced plant mortality risk. Thus, TLP serves as a critical tool for evaluating climate change impacts on plants, making it imperative to develop high‐throughput and in situ methods to measure TLP.We developed hyperspectral pressure–volume curves (PV curves) to estimate TLP using leaf spectral reflectance. We used partial least square regression models to estimate water potential (Ψ) and relative water content (RWC) for two species, Frangula caroliniana and Magnolia grandiflora. RWC and Ψ's model for each species had R2 ≥ 0.7 and %RMSE = 7–10. We constructed PV curves with model estimates and compared the accuracy of directly measured and spectra‐predicted TLP.Our findings indicate that leaf spectral measurements are an alternative method for estimating TLP. F. caroliniana TLP's values were −1.62 ± 0.15 (means ± SD) and −1.62 ± 0.34 MPa for observed and reflectance predicted, respectively (P > 0.05), while M. grandiflora were −1.78 ± 0.34 and −1.66 ± 0.41 MPa (P > 0.05).The estimation of TLP through leaf reflectance‐based PV curves opens a broad range of possibilities for future research aimed at understanding and monitoring plant water relations on a large scale with spectral ecophysiology. Leaf senescence have shed light on its contribution to the recovery of nutrients and signaling of the transition from the active to the dormant stage in winter. The manner by which climatic and edaphic factors and plant phylogeny affect the senescent leaf economics spectrum (more mineral elements included) of different growth habits along elevational gradients in mountain ecosystems is highly uncertain. To fill this knowledge gap, we examined 15 representative subalpine forest species' senescent leaf functional traits (i.e., specific leaf area [SLA], leaf dry matter content [DMC], pH, carbon [C], nitrogen [N], phosphorus [P], potassium [K], calcium [Ca], sodium [Na], magnesium [Mg], manganese [Mn], aluminum [Al], iron [Fe], C:N, N:P, and C:P ratios) to determine the senescent leaf economics spectrum along elevational gradients in the Hengduan Mountains, China. Our results demonstrate that all the functional traits of senescent leaf showed strong correlations with one another, and K was observed as the hub for the leaf economics spectrum. Irrespective of the difference among growth habits (arbor vs. shrub), leaf habits (deciduous vs. evergreen), and leaf types (broad vs. needle), the variations in the two‐dimensional spectrum of the senescent leaf trait exhibited uniformly positive associations with elevation, primarily attributed to climatic drivers. However, the modulation of the senescent leaf economics spectrum by soil properties and plant phylogeny was surprisingly modest. Collectively, our results revealed that the resource trade‐off of senescent leaf showed a trend from acquisition to conservation along elevational gradients, which could broaden the plant economics spectrum to include senescent leaf. The coordination of stomatal conductance and hydraulic conductance in plants is often indicated by a positive relationship between stomatal density and vein density. However, when both hydraulic conductance and stomatal conductance increase simultaneously, there can be conflicting demands that causes a competition for epidermal space, leading to a negative association between stomatal density and vein density. Therefore, the interplay between these traits and how it is influenced by different growth forms is still a subject of debate. In this study, we conducted a common garden experiment to investigate the coordination between stomata, veins, and photosynthesis in 22 species of Ficus with varying growth forms, including free-standing, hemiepiphyte, and climber forms. Our findings revealed that growth form had a significant impact on stomatal and hydraulic traits in Ficus. Hemiepiphyte species exhibited a drought tolerance strategy during their epiphytic stage, characterized by thinner leaves with low stomatal density but higher stomatal size, as well as higher leaf water content and vein density (vein length per area, VLA) compared to free-standing and climber fig species. Climber figs, on the other hand, showed a lower specific leaf area and net photosynthetic rate compared to the other two forms. Contrary to many of previous studies, we found a negative correlation between VLA and stomatal density, as well as a positive correlation between VLA and stomatal size. Our study also suggests that other variables contribute to the variation in photosynthetic rate in Ficus, as stomatal morphology and vein density did not account for the observed variation significantly. Additionally, our analysis revealed non-random patterns of evolution for stomatal density, stomatal size, and VLA. The correlation between vein density and stomatal morphology was observed throughout the evolutionary history of Ficus, which appears to be associated with the diversification of growth forms. The knowledge about vulnerability of tree seedlings to severe droughts is important in order to select the most suitable species for forestry plantations in a context of extreme weather events induced by global climate change. We conducted a study aiming to evaluate the effects of lethal leaf dehydration on seedlings of nine tropical tree species cohabiting the same forest ecosystem, but differing in terms shade tolerance, maximum height, geographical distribution, and leaf mass per area. For this, the percentual loss of photochemical efficiency, measured as the loss of maximum quantum efficiency of photosystem II during leaf dehydration (PL[Fv/Fm]) was investigated. Statistically significant differences were found between species for the average values ​​of the relative water content (RWC) in which there is a loss of 10% and 50% of Fv/Fm. The species were separated in three groups: (a) species that showed the highest Fv/Fm losses at high RWC values, (b) intermediate species, and (c) species that showed significant Fv/Fm loss only at very low values of RWC. The PL[Fv/Fm] during leaf dehydration can be an useful methodology to select tree species for plantations in sites prone to severe droughts associated to extreme weather events. Spatial patterns and environmental gradients in plant traits can elucidate the relationships between plant characteristics, environmental factors, and ecosystem functions and can be used to develop the next generation of vegetation models for predicting vegetation distribution and functions. Studies of Plant traits across spatial scales have advanced significantly worldwide, including on the Tibetan Plateau (TP), the highest and largest plateau globally. Previous research on plant traits on the TP has been limited to specific areas, leaving the overall trend across the plateau unclear. In this study, we examined seven leaf traits—leaf thickness (LT), leaf dry matter content (LDMC), leaf area (LA), specific leaf area (SLA), and leaf carbon (LCC), nitrogen (LNC), and phosphorus (LPC) contents—in 1314 individuals at 237 sites within the alpine vegetation region above 3000 m on the TP to determine their distribution patterns across three spatial dimensions and their relationships with environmental factors. Our results indicated that, compared with Chinese plants, TP plants exhibited significantly greater LT, LDMC, and LNC but lower LA, LCC, and LPC. Except for SLA and LCC, most leaf traits showed significant spatial variability. Climate and soil explained 29.23 % of the total variations in traits. Radiation had the most pronounced effect on LDMC, LA, LNC, and LPC, whereas soil pH primarily constrained LT and LCC. Precipitation influenced most traits both directly and indirectly, with substantial overall effects. Temperature and soil nutrient had minimal influence on the regulation of leaf traits across most of the TP. Our findings suggest that alpine plants typically employ a conservative strategy to cope with the harsh conditions on the TP, but this strategy varies at broader spatial scales and longer environmental gradients, particularly in extreme environments such as the highest alpine regions.

Nowadays, atmospheric concentrations of nitrogen oxides (NOX) have increased rapidly and exceeded the threshold of ecosystems, inevitably affecting the plant growth and community stability, especially in urban green space. The increase of atmospheric NOX is also accompanied by natural and anthropogenic environmental change, which also bring severe environmental stresses on green vegetation. To better understand drivers that contribute to the vegetation changes, this study explored the interaction among atmospheric NOX, climate, terrain, and urbanization, and its impact on the tree leaf and forest community traits, using a dataset with 118 plots of tree communities composed of 5781 trees across distinct types of urban green space in Tianjin, a highly urbanized metropolis in China. The results indicated that atmospheric NOX concentration showed a positive association with urbanization and temperature, which co-limited the tree growth and resulted in the vegetation browning of urban green space. The responses of coniferous and broadleaved forests were different, whose understory herbaceous diversity and height had contrary tendencies to environmental change. Meanwhile, urbanization intensified atmospheric N deposition and heat island effect, increasing the leaf chlorophyll contents of tree species in urban green spaces. While leaf herbivory showed positive correlation with urbanization, temperature, and evaporation only in the high NOX regime. Overall, this study found that atmospheric NOX could be used as a good indicator of urbanization. These findings also advanced our recognition of the environmental driving factors of green vegetation dynamics, and provided references for the research of elsewhere.

Herbivory can impact gas exchange, but the causes of interspecific variation in response remain poorly understood. We aimed to determine (1) what effects does experimental herbivory damage to leaf midveins have on leaf gas exchange and, (2) whether changes in leaf gas exchange after damage was predicted by leaf mechanical or venation traits. We hypothesized that herbivory-driven impacts on leaf gas exchange would be mediated by (1a/1b) venation networks, either by more vein resistance, or possibly trading off with other structural defenses; (2a/2b) or more reticulation (resilience, providing more alternate flow pathways after damage) or less reticulation (sectoriality, preventing spread of reduced functionality after damage). We simulated herbivory by damaging the midveins of four leaves from each of nine Sonoran Desert species. We then measured the percent change in photosynthesis (ΔAn%), transpiration (ΔEt%) and stomatal conductance (Δgsw%) between treated and control leaves. We assessed the relationship of each with leaf venation traits and other mechanical traits. ΔAn% varied between +10 % and -55%, similar to ΔEt% (+27%, -54%) and Δgsw% (+36%, -53%). There was no tradeoff between venation and other structural defenses. Increased damage resilience (reduced ΔAn%, ΔEt%, Δgsw%) was marginally associated with lower force-to-tear (P < 0.05), and higher minor vein density (P < 0.10) but not major vein density or reticulation. Leaf venation networks may thus partially mitigate the response of gas exchange to herbivory and other types of vein damage through either resistance or resilience.

Abstract The morphological, physiological, and biochemical characteristics of leaves result from the long-term adaptation of plants to their environment and are closely related to plant growth and development. In this study, 37 prickly ash germplasm resources from 18 production areas were utilized as the subjects of research. Logistic equations, principal component analysis, and cluster analysis were employed to comprehensively evaluate the leaf traits of prickly ash germplasm resources, with an analysis of their correlation with ecological and geographical factors in the production areas. The results showed that the leaf traits of prickly ash germplasms of different origins are substantially different and diverse. The coefficient of variation for the 14 leaf traits was greater than 10%. The coefficient of variation of the compound leaflet number was the highest among all the considered leaf traits, and the coefficient of variation of leaf thickness was the lowest, at 49.86% and 11.37%, respectively. The leaf traits of the prickly ash germplasm originating from Chongqing in Yongchuan, Chongqing in Rongchang, and Yunnan in Honghe ranked highest, whereas the leaf traits of the prickly ash germplasm from Henan in Jiaozuo, Gansu in Tianshui, and Shanxi in Yuncheng ranked lowest. The results of the correlation analysis showed that among the ecological and geographical factors of the origins, latitude had the strongest correlation with the leaf traits of the prickly ash germplasm. As latitude increased, the leaves of prickly ash gradually decreased in size, weight, and leaf shape index. The factor with the second strongest correlation was temperature. The leaves of the prickly ash germplasm originating from warmer climate areas were larger and heavier than those from areas with colder climates. Altitude and longitude did not significantly affect the leaf traits of the prickly ash germplasm, but at similar latitudes, the leaves of the prickly ash germplasm in high-altitude areas were smaller, and the leaves of the prickly ash germplasm in low-altitude areas were larger. These findings can provide valuable references for breeding and the sustainable utilization of new varieties of prickly ash resources.

Rising temperatures are influencing forests on many scales, with potentially strong variation vertically across forest strata. Using published research and new analyses, we evaluate how microclimate and leaf temperatures, traits, and gas exchange vary vertically in forests, shaping tree, and ecosystem ecology. In closed-canopy forests, upper canopy leaves are exposed to the highest solar radiation and evaporative demand, which can elevate leaf temperature (Tleaf ), particularly when transpirational cooling is curtailed by limited stomatal conductance. However, foliar traits also vary across height or light gradients, partially mitigating and protecting against the elevation of upper canopy Tleaf . Leaf metabolism generally increases with height across the vertical gradient, yet differences in thermal sensitivity across the gradient appear modest. Scaling from leaves to trees, canopy trees have higher absolute metabolic capacity and growth, yet are more vulnerable to drought and damaging Tleaf than their smaller counterparts, particularly under climate change. By contrast, understory trees experience fewer extreme high Tleaf 's but have fewer cooling mechanisms and thus may be strongly impacted by warming under some conditions, particularly when exposed to a harsher microenvironment through canopy disturbance. As the climate changes, integrating the patterns and mechanisms reviewed here into models will be critical to forecasting forest-climate feedback.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Our understanding of plant responses to biotic and abiotic drivers is largely based on above-ground plant traits, with little focus on below-ground traits despite their key role in water and nutrient uptake. Here, we aimed to understand the extent to which above- and below-ground traits are co-ordinated, and how these traits respond to soil moisture gradients and plant intraspecific competition. METHODS: We chose seedlings of five tropical tree species and grew them in a greenhouse for 16 weeks under a soil moisture gradient [low (drought), medium and high (well-watered) moisture levels] with and without intraspecific competition. At harvest, we measured nine above- and five below-ground traits of all seedlings based on standard protocols. KEY RESULTS: In response to the soil moisture gradient, above-ground traits are found to be consistent with the leaf economics spectrum, whereas below-ground traits are inconsistent with the root economics spectrum. We found high specific leaf area and total leaf area in well-watered conditions, while high leaf dry matter content, leaf thickness and stem dry matter content were observed in drought conditions. However, below-ground traits showed contrasting patterns, with high specific root length but low root branching index in the low water treatment. The correlations between above- and below-ground traits across the soil moisture gradient were variable, i.e. specific leaf area was positively correlated with specific root length, while it was negatively correlated with root average diameter across moisture levels. However, leaf dry matter content was unexpectedly positively correlated with both specific root length and root branching index. Intraspecific competition has influenced both above- and below-ground traits, but interacted with soil moisture to affect only below-ground traits. Consistent with functional equilibrium theory, more biomass was allocated to roots under drought conditions, and to leaves under sufficient soil moisture conditions. CONCLUSIONS: Our results indicate that the response of below-ground traits to plant intraspecific competition and soil moisture conditions may not be inferred using above-ground traits, suggesting that multiple resource use axes are needed to understand plant ecological strategies. Lack of consistent leaf-root trait correlations across the soil moisture gradient highlight the multidimensionality of plant trait relationships which needs more exploration.

Differences within species (Intraspecific trait variation - ITV) contribute substantially to overall trait variability and environmental harshness can reduce among-species variation. While aboveground traits have received considerable attention, knowledge about ITV in fine-root traits and how it differs from ITV in aboveground traits remains limited. This study examined the partitioning of trait variation aboveground and fine-root traits in 52 European herbaceous species and how such proportions change in response to drought, offering valuable insights for accurate functional species characterization and inter-species comparisons. We studied seven morphological aboveground and fine-root traits under drought and well-watered conditions in a greenhouse experiment. Linear mixed effect models and permutational multivariate analysis of variance (PERMANOVA) were employed to decompose trait variation, ensuring the robustness of our results. We also calculated variance partitioning for the combination of aboveground traits and the combination of fine-root traits, as well as pairs of analogous leaf and fine-root traits (i.e., traits that fulfill similar functions) for each treatment (control and drought). Among-species trait differences explained a greater proportion of overall variance than within-species variation, except for root dry matter content (RDMC). Height and leaf area stood out, with species' identity accounting for 87-90% of total trait variation. Drought had no significant effect on the proportions of variation in any of the traits. However, the combination of fine-root traits exhibited higher intraspecific variability (44-44%) than aboveground traits (19-21%) under both drought and control. Analogous root traits also showed higher ITV (51-50%) than analogous leaf traits (27-31%). Our findings highlight substantial within-species variation and the nuanced responses of fine-root traits, particularly RDMC, suggesting root traits' flexibility to soil heterogeneity that fosters less differentiation among species. Among-species trait differences, especially aboveground, may underscore distinct strategies and competitive abilities for resource acquisition and utilization. Intraspecific trait variation can influence plant performance in different environments and may thereby determine the ability of individual plants to respond to climate change. However, our understanding of its patterns and environmental drivers across different spatial scales is incomplete, especially in understudied regions like the Arctic.To fill this knowledge gap, we examined above‐ground and below‐ground traits from three shrub taxa expanding across the tundra biome and evaluated their relationships with multiple microenvironmental and macroclimatic factors. The traits reflected plant size and structure (plant height, leaf area and root to shoot ratio), leaf economics (specific leaf area, nitrogen content), and root economics and collaboration with mycorrhizal fungi (specific root length, root tissue density, nitrogen content, and ectomycorrhizal colonisation intensity). We also measured leaf and root δ15N and leaf δ13C to characterise nitrogen source and acquisition pathways and plant water stress. Traits were measured in replicated plots (N = 135) varying in soil microclimate, thaw depth and organic layer thickness established across five sites spanning a macroclimate gradient in northern Alaska. This hierarchical design allowed us to disentangle the independent and combined effects of fine‐scale and broad‐scale factors on intraspecific trait variation.We found substantial intraspecific variation at fine spatial scales for most traits and less variation along the macroclimate gradient and between shrub taxa. Consistent with these patterns, microenvironmental factors, mainly soil moisture and thaw depth, interacted with macroclimate, mainly climatic water deficit, to structure size‐structural and leaf trait variation. In contrast, most root traits responded additively to thaw depth and macroclimate.Synthesis. Our results demonstrate that above‐ground and below‐ground tundra shrub traits respond differently to microenvironmental and macroclimatic variation. The investigation into trade-offs among plant functional traits sheds light on how plants strategically balance growth and survival when facing environmental stress. This study sought to evaluate whether trade-offs observed at both community and individual species levels could indicate adaptive fitness across an intensity of flooding intensity. The study was conducted at 25 sampling sites spanning approximately 600 km along the riparian zone in the Three Gorges Reservoir area, China. The findings revealed that, along the flooding gradient, the overall riparian community did not exhibit significant trade-offs between leaf and root traits. Examining three broadly distributed dominant species (Cynodon dactylon, Xanthium strumarium, and Abutilon theophrasti), perennial plants showed pronounced trade-offs under low flooding intensity, while annuals exhibited trade-offs under moderate and low flooding intensity. The trade-offs were evident in traits related to nitrogen-carbon resources, such as specific leaf area, root tissue density, and photosynthetic rate. However, under strong flooding intensity, the relationship between leaf and root traits of the species studied was decoupled. Furthermore, the study identified a significant correlation between soil nitrogen and the trade-off traits under moderate and low flooding intensity. Integrating results from the CSR (Competitors, Stress-tolerators, Ruderals) strategy model, species niche breath analysis, and nitrogen-regulated trade-off, the study revealed that, in the face of high flooding intensity, perennial species (C. dactylon) adopts an S-strategy, demonstrating tolerance through a conservative resource allocation that decouples leaf-root coordination. Annual species (X. strumarium and A. theophrasti), on the other hand, exhibit niche specialization along the flooding gradient, employing distinct strategies (R- and C-strategy). As flooding stress diminishes and soil nitrogen level decreases, plant strategies tend to shift towards an R-strategy with a competition for reduced N resources. In conclusion, the study highlighted the pivotal roles of soil nitrogen and flooding intensity acting as the dual determinants of species growth and tolerance. These dynamics of growth-tolerance balance were evident in the diverse trade-offs between leaf and root traits of individual plant species with different life histories, underscoring the array of adaptive strategies employed by riparian plants across the flooding intensity gradient. Introduction: Light use efficiency (LUE) is a crucial determinant of plant productivity, while leaf functional traits directly affect ecosystem functions. However, it remains unclear how climate warming affects LUE and leaf functional traits of dominant species in alpine meadows. Methods: We conducted a 4-year in-situ field warming experiment to investigate the eco-physiological characteristics for a dominant species (Elymus nutans) and a common species (Potentilla anserina) on the Tibetan Plateau. The leaf traits, photosynthesis and fluorescence characteristics were measured, along with the soil physical-chemical properties associated with the two species. Results and discussions: Experimental warming increased the leaf LUE, maximum photochemical efficiency, non-photochemical quenching, relative water content and specific leaf area for both species. However, therewas a decrease in leaf and soil element content. Different species exhibit varying adaptability towarming. Increasing temperature significantly increased the photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, transpiration rate, total water content, and specific leaf volume of E. nutans; however, all these traits exhibited an opposite trend in P. anserina. Warming has a direct negative impact on leaf LUE and an indirectly enhances LUE through its effects on leaf traits. The impact of warming on plant photosynthetic capacity is primarily mediated by soil nutrients and leaf traits. These results indicate that the two different species employ distinct adaptive strategies in response to climate change, which are related to their species-specific variations. Variations in plant traits are indicative of plant adaptations to forest environments, and studying their relationships with tree growth provides valuable insights into forest regeneration. The spatial arrangement of plant seeds within the forest litter or soil critically influences the variations of root–leaf traits, thereby affecting the adaptive strategies of emerging seedlings. However, our current understanding of the impacts of individual root–leaf traits on seedling growth in different relative position, and whether these traits together affect growth, remains limited. This study focuses on the dominant tree species, Castanopsis kawakamii , within the Sanming C. kawakamii Nature Reserve of China. The present experiment aimed to examine the variations in root–leaf traits of seedling, focus on the relative positions of seeds within different layers: beneath or above the litter layer, or within the bare soil layer (without litter). Our findings provided evidence supporting a coordinated relationship between root and leaf traits, wherein leaf traits varied in conjunction with root traits in the relative positions of seeds. Specifically, we observed that seedlings exhibited higher values for specific leaf area and average root diameter, while displaying lower root tissue density. The mixed model explained 86.1% of the variation in root–leaf traits, surpassing the variation explained by the relative positions. Furthermore, soil nitrogen acted as a mediator, regulating the relationship between seedling growth and root–leaf traits, specifically leaf dry matter content and root tissue density. Rational fertilization is the main measure to improve crop yield, but there are differences in the optimal effects of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) rationing exhibited by the same crop species in different regions and soil conditions. In order to determine the optimum fertilization ratio for high yield of Sapindus mukorossi in western Fujian to provide scientific basis. We carried out the experimental design with different ratios of N, P and K to investigate the effects of fertilization on the yield. and leaf physiology of Sapindus mukorossiand soil properties. Results showed that the yield of Sapindus mukorossi reached the highest value (1464.58 kg ha-1) at N2P2K2 treatment, which increased to 1056.25 kg ha-1 compared with the control. There were significant differences in the responses of soil properties and leaf physiological factors to fertilization treatments. Factor analysis showed that the integrated scores of soil factors and leaf physiological characteristic factors of Sapindus mukorossi under N2P2K2 fertilization treatment were the highest, which effectively improved the soil fertility and leaf physiological traits. The yield of Sapindus mukorossi showed a highly significant linear positive correlation with the integrated scores (r=0.70, p<0.01). Passage analysis showed that soil available nitrogen content, organic carbon content, and leaf area index were the key main factors to affect the yield. RDA showed that soil organic carbon and available phosphorus were the most important factors to affect leaf physiological traits. We recommend that the optimum fertilization ratio of Sapindus mukorossi was 0.96Kg N, 0.80Kg P and 0.64Kg K per plant. Reasonable fertilization can improve soil fertility and leaf physiological traits, while excessive fertilization has negative effects on soil fertility, leaf physiology and yield. The morphological, physiological, and biochemical characteristics of leaves result from the long-term adaptation of plants to their environment and are closely related to plant growth and development. In this study, 37 prickly ash germplasm resources from 18 production areas were utilized as the subjects of research. Logistic equations, principal component analysis, and cluster analysis were employed to comprehensively evaluate the leaf traits of prickly ash germplasm resources, with an analysis of their correlation with ecological and geographical factors in the production areas. The results showed that the leaf traits of prickly ash germplasms of different origins are substantially different and diverse. The coefficient of variation for the 14 leaf traits was greater than 10%. Questions: Increased soil phosphorus (P) availability in fertilized grasslands can drive both community degradation and delayed community recovery upon agricultural abandonment. Beyond describing grassland community patterns along gradients in P availability, it remains unclear how individual species with different strategies respond to increasing phosphorus. Here we studied intraspecific variability of leaf functional traits in response to soil phosphorus, for species with contrasting resource‐use strategies. Methods: We set up a pot experiment with communities containing four species, assembled from a pool of 20 mesotrophic grassland species growing along a soil P gradient. Species selection included various growth forms (grasses vs forbs) and resource‐use strategies (acquisitive vs conservative resource use). We measured three variables characterizing the (a)biotic environmental context: bioavailable soil P concentration, total community biomass as a proxy for the intensity of competition, and the proportional biomass of a species in the community as a proxy for its competitive dominance. We investigated the effect of this environmental context on the expression of two leaf traits, specific leaf area (SLA) and leaf dry matter content (LDMC). Results: We found an acquisitive trait expression within species (increase in SLA and decrease in LDMC) in response to increased soil P supply and a conservative trait expression (decrease in SLA and increase in LDMC) in response to an increase in total community biomass. Importantly, the trait responses to the environmental context were generally consistent for species representing very different resource‐use strategies and growth forms. Conclusions: Species responded with a shift from an acquisitive to a conservative trait expression in response to limited resources; i.e., driven by a decrease in soil phosphorus concentration or an increase in total community biomass. Unexpectedly, the intraspecific variability in response to the changing environmental conditions was not clearly mediated by the species' strategy. Multidimensional trait frameworks are increasingly used to understand plant strategies for growth and survival. However, it is unclear if frameworks developed at a global level can be applied in local communities and how well these frameworks—based largely on plant morphological traits—align with plant physiology and response to stress.We tested the ability of an integrated framework of plant form and function to characterise seedling trait variation and drought response among 22 grasses and forbs common in a semi‐arid grassland. We measured above‐ground and below‐ground traits, and survival to explore how drought response is linked to three trait dimensions (resource conservation, microbial collaboration, and plant size) associated with the framework as well as non‐morphological dimensions (e.g. physiological traits) that are under‐represented in global trait frameworks.We found support for three globally‐recognised axes representing trade‐offs in strategies associated with tissue investment (leaf nitrogen, leaf mass per area, root tissue density), below‐ground resource uptake (root diameter, specific root length), and size (shoot mass). However, in contrast to global patterns, above‐ground and below‐ground resource conservation gradients were oppositely aligned: root tissue density was positively correlated with leaf N rather than leaf mass per area. This likely reflects different investment strategies of annual and perennial herbaceous species, as fast‐growing annual species invested in lower density roots and less nitrogen‐rich leaves to maximise plant‐level carbon assimilation. Species with longer drought survival minimised water loss through small above‐ground size and low leaf‐level transpiration rates, and drought survival was best predicted by a principal component axis representing plant size.Contrary to our expectations, drought survival in seedlings did not align with the conservation or collaboration axes suggesting that seedlings with different functional strategies can achieve similar drought survival, as long as they minimise water loss. Our results also show that within local communities, expected trait relationships could be decoupled as some plant groups achieve similar performance through different trait combinations. The effectiveness of species mean trait values in predicting drought response highlights the value of trait‐based methods as a versatile tool for understanding ecological processes locally across various ecosystems. In forest ecosystems, many ecosystem functions such as tree growth are affected by tree species richness. This biodiversity–productivity relationship (BPR) is mediated by leaf traits, which themselves are known to be influenced by tree species richness; at the same time, as the primary organs of light capture, they are an important factor for tree growth. However, how tree growth is influenced by a tree's ability to phenotypically adjust its leaf traits to the within‐individual light gradient has largely been unexplored. Furthermore, it is not known how such impacts of within‐tree leaf trait variation on individual tree growth sums up to productivity at the community scale. In this study we tested how tree species richness, a tree's mean leaf traits, within‐tree leaf trait variation and the light extinction coefficient within a tree crown influence tree growth. We measured these variables in the temperate forest plantation of the Kreinitz biodiversity experiment. We found that the relationship between tree species richness and tree growth is mediated via the leaf trait variation of the individual trees, which in turn was modified by light availability. In particular, trees in monocultures show a higher within‐individual leaf trait variation, which partly compensates for the lack in among‐species leaf trait variation, and thus affects the BPR. It seems that tree richness operates both through increased acquisitive trait values and within‐individual leaf trait variation, two processes that cancelled out each other and resulted in the absence of a significant effect of tree richness on productivity in our study. In conclusion, to understand the BPR, it is important to study the underlying processes and to know which ones reinforce or oppose each other. The Global South has suffered an accelerated population and urban growth. This has created multiple impacts at the regional level such as erosion, soil degradation and biodiversity loss, as well as temperature increase in the cities causing urban heat islands. Bogotá, the capital of Colombia, is one of the largest cities in the Global South and in the last five decades has undergone a rapid urban transition, impacting surrounding ecosystems. However, little is known about how urbanization affects the local flora. To understand how plants are responding and adapting to urbanization processes in the city of Bogotá, we used a land cover gradient of urban, peri-urban and rural areas, and four plant functional traits (leaf area [LA], specific leaf area [SLA], leaf dry matter content [LDMC] and wood density [WD]). We analyzed 16 species shared in at least two land covers. Although urban and peri-urban areas had higher temperatures and higher LDMC and lower SLA values than rural areas, there were no significant differences in functional traits between land covers. Some species showed significant changes between land covers, indicating that there is a species-specific response to urbanization. Considering the need for urban areas to prioritize species that promote cooling and exhibit resistance to stress, as well as the capacity to adapt to climate change, it is essential to include plants possessing different combinations of functional traits. Forest productivity is closely linked to seasonal variations and vertical differentiation in leaf traits. However, leaf structural and chemical traits variation among co-existing species, and plant functional types within the canopy are poorly quantified. In this study, the seasonality of leaf chlorophyll, nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) were quantified vertically along the canopy of four major tree species and two types of herbs in a temperate deciduous forest. The role of shade tolerance in shaping the seasonal variation and vertical differentiation was examined. During the entire season, chlorophyll content showed a distinct asymmetric unimodal pattern for all species, with greater chlorophyll levels in autumn than in spring, and the timing of peak chlorophyll per leaf area gradually decreased as shade tolerance increased. Chlorophyll a:b ratios gradually decreased with increasing shade tolerance. Leaf N and P contents sharply declined during leaf expansion, remained steady in the mature stage and decreased again during leaf senescence. Over the seasons, the lower canopy layer had significantly higher chlorophyll per leaf mass but not chlorophyll per leaf area than the upper canopy layer regardless of degree of shade tolerance. However, N and P per leaf area of intermediate shade-tolerant and fully shade-tolerant tree species were significantly higher in the upper canopy than in the lower. Seasonal variations in N:P ratios suggest changes in N or P limitation. These findings indicate that shade tolerance is a key feature shaping inter-specific differences in leaf chlorophyll, N, and P contents as well as their seasonality in temperate deciduous forests, which have significant implications for modeling leaf photosynthesis and ecosystem production. The ecology of plant species relies on the synchronous functioning of leaves and roots, but few studies have simultaneously examined the community trait dispersion (CTD) patterns of both organs. We measured 16 analogous leaf and root traits on 44 co-occurring woody species in a subtropical forest in southern China, aiming to examine whether leaf and root traits were coordinated, organized into parallel trait axes, exhibited similar CTD, and displayed consistent responses in CTD and community-weighted means of (CWM) traits over environmental gradients. While the first axes of leaf and root trait variation similarly exhibited a fast–slow continuum, leaf traits covered a secondary "carbon economics" axis, contrasting to root traits depicting a collaboration axis reflecting species' mycorrhizal dependency. Analogous leaf and root chemical traits were generally coordinated but less so for morphological traits. At the community level, changes in the CWM of the first axes were generally consistent among organs with more conservative traits found as increasing elevation but not for the second axis. While root traits became thinner and more conservative as soil phosphorus concentration decreased, leaf traits rarely varied. When different trait axes were combined, leaf traits were overdispersed but tended to converge with increased elevation and soil potassium and phosphorus levels, whereas root traits were clustered but tended to diverge along the same gradients. Our study highlights fine filtering of different suites of traits above- and belowground, which in turn might reduce overall niche overlap among species and promote coexistence with diverse functional designs. Intraspecific trait variation is a key feature that enables species to occur in heterogeneous landscapes. We studied Clusia grandiflora and Anacardium occidentale traits over a forest-dune gradient on the Brazilian Amazon coast (restinga). C. grandiflora showed a drought-avoidance strategy, storing water in its leaves, whereas A. occidentale showed conservative resource use in leaves, evidenced by its high dry-matter content and acquisitive resource in wood, showing lower wood density. Only A. occidentale changed its trait values through the forest-dune gradient, showing more conservative leaves in dunes and shrublands, despite a lower wood density than in forest. Leaf and wood traits are likely to be decoupled among Amazon coastal trees and their responses to environmental gradients are species-specific. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Leaf senescence have shed light on its contribution to the recovery of nutrients and signaling of the transition from the active to the dormant stage in winter. The manner by which climatic and edaphic factors and plant phylogeny affect the senescent leaf economics spectrum (more mineral elements included) of different growth habits along elevational gradients in mountain ecosystems is highly uncertain. To fill this knowledge gap, we examined 15 representative subalpine forest species' senescent leaf functional traits (i.e., specific leaf area [SLA], leaf dry matter content [DMC], pH, carbon [C], nitrogen [N], phosphorus [P], potassium [K], calcium [Ca], sodium [Na], magnesium [Mg], manganese [Mn], aluminum [Al], iron [Fe], C:N, N:P, and C:P ratios) to determine the senescent leaf economics spectrum along elevational gradients in the Hengduan Mountains, China. Our results demonstrate that all the functional traits of senescent leaf showed strong correlations with one another, and K was observed as the hub for the leaf economics spectrum. Irrespective of the difference among growth habits (arbor vs. shrub), leaf habits (deciduous vs. evergreen), and leaf types (broad vs. needle), the variations in the two‐dimensional spectrum of the senescent leaf trait exhibited uniformly positive associations with elevation, primarily attributed to climatic drivers. However, the modulation of the senescent leaf economics spectrum by soil properties and plant phylogeny was surprisingly modest. Collectively, our results revealed that the resource trade‐off of senescent leaf showed a trend from acquisition to conservation along elevational gradients, which could broaden the plant economics spectrum to include senescent leaf.

Leaf morphology plays a crucial role in predicting the productivity and environmental adaptability of forest trees, making it essential to understand the genetic mechanisms behind leaf variation. In natural populations of Populus cathayana, leaf morphology exhibits rich intraspecific variation due to long-term selection. However, there have been no studies that systematically reveal the genetic mechanisms of leaf variation in P. cathayana. To fill this gap and enhance our understanding of leaf variation in P. cathayana, we collected nine leaf traits from the P. cathayana natural population, consisting of 416 accessions, and conducted the preliminary classification of leaf types with four categories. Subsequently, we conducted an analysis of selective sweep and genome-wide association studies (GWAS) to uncover the genetic basis of leaf traits variation. Most of the leaf traits displayed significant correlations, with broad-sense trait heritability ranging from 0.38 to 0.74. In total, three selective sweep methods ultimately identified 278 positively selected candidate regions and 493 genes associated with leaf size. Single-trait and multi-trait GWAS methods detected 13 and 59 genes, respectively. By integrating the results of selective sweep and GWAS, we further identified a total of nine overlapping genes. These genes may play a role in the leaf development process and are closely associated with leaf size. In particular, the gene CBSCBSPB3 (Pca07G009100) located on chromosome 7, was associated with the response to light stimulation. This study will deepen our understanding of the genetic mechanism of leaf adaptive variation in P. cathayana and provide valuable gene resources.

AbstractExploring the genetic basis of adaptive divergence at fine spatial scales can broaden our basic understanding of evolution and how organisms may adapt to changing environments in the future. Cave-associated microhabitats provide a unique opportunity to gain insight into microgeographic adaptation. We studied the genetic architecture of microhabitat-related divergence in flower phenology and leaf traits between two sister species of Primulina, P. depressa and P. danxiaensis, which live in sympatry but occupy contrasting microhabitats. We identified 40 significant quantitative trait loci (QTLs) associated with the interspecific differences in these microhabitat adaptation traits. Flowering time was controlled by one major-effect and six minor-effect QTLs, while leaf traits were influenced by 9–12 QTLs of small to moderate effect. The genetic architecture of the flowering time and the specific leaf area was genetically independent of other traits. Our results suggest that microhabitat adaptation in sympatric populations of Primulina differs according to different traits, with leaf traits diverging with the accumulation of many small changes and flowering phenology being driven by major effect variance.

The determinants of phyllosphere microbial communities are drawing much attention given their functional importance for their plant host fitness and health. Identifying these determinants remains challenging in neotropical forests, considering the diversity of the tree hosts and the strong vertical heterogeneity of abiotic conditions within the canopy and at the scale of the leaf. Here, we studied fungal and bacterial communities living in the endophytic and epiphytic phyllosphere in tree species across vertical gradients, from the top of the canopy to the ground. We used DNA metabarcoding to characterize microbial communities and measured abiotic variables and foliar traits to characterize environmental heterogeneity. The assembly of fungal communities was more driven by deterministic processes compared with bacteria, with endo- and epiphytic communities being similarly shaped by the host identity and unmeasured parameters. In contrast, in bacterial communities, the relative importance of deterministic processes decreased from endophytic to epiphytic communities. Bacterial epi- and endophytic communities were partly and differently determined by the position within the canopy, the host identity, and leaf traits, suggesting an effect of the vertical gradient and a stronger selection in the inner tissues of the leaf than on its surface. The tree host exerts a selective pressure on microbial communities but the leaf as microhabitat also contributes significantly to the assembly of microbial communities. Discrepancies exist between fungi and bacteria that probably reflect different life-history traits and ecological strategies, emphasizing the need to study these communities jointly if we are to fully understand plant–phyllosphere interactions. Abstract Background Eucommia ulmoides leaves have high medicinal and economic value as a dual-purpose substance for medicine and food. Employing leaves from 13 natural populations of Eucommia ulmoides as research objects, this study reveals the variation patterns of intra-specific and inter-specific trait variation and explores the response of leaf characteristics to geographical and climatic changes, aiming to provide a scientific basis for the efficient utilization of leaf resources and the breeding of superior varieties. Results Descriptive statistical analysis and nested analysis of variance showed significant differences in 11 leaf traits of Eucommia ulmoides inter-populations and intra-populations, with an average coefficient of variation of 17.45%. The coefficient of variation for average leaf phenotypic traits is 20.77%, and the leaf phenotypic variation is mainly from the variation intra-populations. Principal component analysis reveals that the cumulative contribution rate of the top three principal components which mainly contributed to the phenotypic variation of Eucommia ulmoides leaves reached 74.98%, which could be sorted into size traits (34.57%), color traits (25.82%) and shape traits (14.58%). In addition, correlation analysis expresses there is a specific co-variation pattern among leaf traits, with a strong connection between shape, size, and color traits. Geographic and climatic distances are significantly correlated, and mantel test and correlation analysis indicate that leaf traits of Eucommia ulmoides are mainly influenced by altitude. With the increase of altitude, the leaves become smaller. Partial correlation analysis shows that after controlling climate factors, the correlation between some characters and geographical factors disappears significantly. Temperature and precipitation have a great influence on the variation of leaf phenotypic traits, and the larger the leaves are in areas with high temperature and heavy rainfall. Conclusions These findings contribute to a further understanding of the leaf morphological characteristics of Eucommia ulmoides and the extent to which the environment influences leaf trait variation. They can provide a scientific basis for the protection and application of Eucommia ulmoides leaf resources in the future.

Urban air pollution poses a significant threat to human health, with metropolitan areas particularly affected due to high emissions from human activities. Particulate matter (PMx) is among the most harmful pollutants to human health, being composed of a complex mixture of substances related to severe pulmonary conditions. Urban green spaces play a vital role in mitigating air pollution by capturing PMx, and it is essential to select plant species with a high capacity for PMx accumulation to effectively enhance air quality. This study aimed to evaluate and compare the accuracy of two PMx quantification methods—light microscopy and filtration—which demonstrated a high correlation (R2 = 0.72), suggesting that both methods are reliable for assessing PMx accumulation on leaves. Light microscopy allowed for the visualization of PMx deposition, revealing the species warranting further analysis using the filtration method. Among the species analyzed, Euonymus japonicus, Ligustrum lucidum, Alnus glutinosa, Rubus ulmifolius, and Laurus nobilis demonstrated the highest total PMx accumulation, exceeding 50 µg cm−2, making them particularly valuable for air pollution mitigation. This study examined the correlation between leaf traits such as specific leaf area (SLA), leaf area (LA), leaf dissection index (LDI), and leaf roundness and PMx accumulation across the 30 different plant species. A multiple linear regression analysis indicated that these leaf traits significantly influenced PMx accumulation, with SLA and LA showing negative correlations and leaf roundness exhibiting a positive correlation with PMx deposition. In conclusion, this study highlights the importance of selecting plant species with specific leaf traits for effective air quality improvement in urban environments particularly in highly polluted areas, to enhance air quality and public health.

Vegetative traits of plants can respond directly to changes in the environment, such as those occurring under climate change. That phenotypic plasticity could be adaptive, maladaptive, or neutral. We manipulated the timing of spring snowmelt and amount of summer precipitation in factorial combination and examined responses of specific leaf area (SLA), trichome density, leaf water content (LWC), photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance and intrinsic water-use efficiency (iWUE) in the subalpine herb Ipomopsis aggregata. The experiment was repeated in three years differing in natural timing of snowmelt. To examine natural selection, we used survival, relative growth rate, and flowering as fitness indices. A 50% reduction in summer precipitation reduced stomatal conductance and increased iWUE, and doubled precipitation increased LWC. Combining natural and experimental variation, earlier snowmelt reduced soil moisture, photosynthetic rate and stomatal conductance, and increased trichome density and iWUE. Precipitation reduction reversed the mortality selection favoring high stomatal conductance under normal and doubled precipitation, and higher LWC improved growth. Earlier snowmelt is a strong signal of climate change and can change expression of leaf morphology and gas exchange traits, just as reduced precipitation can. Stomatal conductance and SLA showed adaptive plasticity under some conditions.

Question: Trait‐based ecology is built on the notion that traits impact individual performance, but trait–growth relationships have rarely been tested considering the intraspecific variation, trait interactions, and potential nonlinearity in these relationships. Location: Seven tropical dry forests throughout Colombia. Methods: We examined trait–growth relationships in 263 woody species of tropical dry forests in Colombia, including trait and growth information measured in the same individuals. We measured height, stem, and leaf traits related to growth and hydraulic safety–efficiency in 967 individuals in seven permanent plots (1 ha). We assessed trait–growth relationships using random forest models for each plot with different trait resolutions (individual, plot, area) and complexity of trait interactions (low, medium, high). Results: Trait–growth relationships were generally weak without significant differences among trait resolutions or levels of interactions between traits. However, when considering leaf phenology, the proportion of growth variation explained in deciduous species was almost three times higher than in evergreen species. Finally, we found that the effect of traits on growth was consistent across plots and phenological strategies, with both stem (vessel area and pit diameter aperture) and leaf (leaf area and specific leaf area) traits ranked as important predictors, the relevance of which depended on the species' leaf phenology. Conclusions: Our findings indicate that growth is probably limited by different factors depending on the species' physiology according to the leaf habit considered. However, other factors not included in the analysis, such as microenvironmental variability, might influence trait–growth relationships in tropical dry forests. Overall, our results suggest that a trait coordination approach at the whole‐plant level is needed to better understand plants' performance and demographic rates in this ecosystem. Further studies on the traits of regional flora and consideration of longer growth periods would help to elucidate the dynamics governing trait composition in these forests, which is essential for the design of adequate forest restoration and conservation practices. Premise: Plant traits and insect herbivory have been highly studied within the modern record but only to a limited extent within the paleontological. Preservation influences what can be measured within the fossil record, but modern methods are also not compatible with paleobotanical methods. To remedy this knowledge gap, a comparable framework was created here using modern and paleobotanical methods, allowing for future comparisons within the fossil record. Methods: Insect feeding damage on selected tree species at Harvard Forest, the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center, and La Selva were characterized using the damage type system prevalent within paleobotanical studies and compared with leaf traits. Linear models and random forest analyses tested the influence of leaf traits on total, specialized, gall, and mine frequency and diversity. Results: Structural traits like leaf dry mass per area and palatability traits, including lignin and phosphorus concentrations, are important variables affecting gall and mine damage. The significance and strength of trait‐herbivory relationships varied across forest types, which is likely driven by differences in local insect populations. Conclusions: This work addresses the persistent gap between modern and paleoecological studies focusing on the influence of leaf traits on insect herbivory. This is important as modern climate change alters our understanding of plant–insect interactions, providing a need for contextualizing these relationships within evolutionary time. The fossil record provides information on terrestrial response to past climatic events and, thus, should be implemented when considering how to preserve biodiversity under current and future global change. Particulate matter (PM) exposure in urban areas is a continuous threat to human health and requires sustainable solutions for effective reduction. The aim of this study is to provide a comprehensive overview of façade greening and its effects on PM and to identify knowledge gaps. We systematically screened, analyzed, and re-evaluated previous reviews according to the criteria established for an umbrella review. As a result, this study covers and discusses common measurement methods, influencing factors, the effectiveness of façade greening, leaf characteristics, and plant species from different subtopics. The main findings are that inconsistent measurement methods limit the comparability of the analyzed reviews, and different climatic conditions affecting the use of plant species lead to different international effects. Despite the existing studies reporting a positive effect on the reduction of PM, comparability is difficult due to methodological differences and external influences. Given the complexity, interdisciplinary collaboration with experts is essential to increase the effectiveness of façade greening for PM accumulation for healthy urban air. We suggest that this umbrella review provides a foundation for future research and practical implementations, such as a suitable plant selection or façade design, by integrating the results. In forested ecosystems, shrubs must succeed in persisting in low‐light environments, while simultaneously having the ability to rapidly expand and occupy newly created canopy openings, yet little is known about the traits that make this possible. We hypothesize that shrub species that are abundant in the understory exhibit a specific set of functional traits that define their ability to persist during unfavorable periods and to rapidly exploit newly created habitats. We tested this by comparing field‐measured functional traits such as biomass allocation, leaf display, crown morphology, and leaf traits, across individual size classes and two gap‐forest environments of five shrub species. We observed significant differences in traits between species, size classes, and gap‐forest environments. These differences were primarily related to biomass allocation traits, followed by leaf display, crown morphology, and leaf traits. Abundant shrubs like mountain maple (Acer spicatum) and hazelnut (Corylus cornuta) invested significantly more biomass in roots, had a larger total leaf area, and displayed leaves in a more efficient manner to intercept light. The high investment in root biomass can be interpreted as shrubs exploiting the persistence and colonization strategy through resprouting. Permanent sub‐canopy status likely explains the importance of efficient leaf display, wherein abundant shrubs had a large leaf area with minimal support structures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Forest disturbances increase the proportion of fast‐growing tree species compared to slow‐growing ones. To understand their relative capacity for carbon uptake and their vulnerability to climate change, and to represent those differences in Earth system models, it is necessary to characterise the physiological differences in their leaf‐level control of water use efficiency and carbon assimilation. We used wood density as a proxy for the fast‐slow growth spectrum and tested the assumption that trees with a low wood density (LWD) have a lower water‐use efficiency than trees with a high wood density (HWD). We selected 5 LWD tree species and 5 HWD tree species growing in the same location in an Amazonian tropical forest and measured in situ steady‐state gas exchange on top‐of‐canopy leaves with parallel sampling and measurement of leaf mass area and leaf nitrogen content. We found that LWD species invested more nitrogen in photosynthetic capacity than HWD species, had higher photosynthetic rates and higher stomatal conductance. However, contrary to expectations, we showed that the stomatal control of the balance between transpiration and carbon assimilation was similar in LWD and HWD species and that they had the same dark respiration rates. Summary Statement: We measured leaf gas exchange in the central Amazon to inform representation of tropical forest physiology in Earth system models.
