Identifying evidence of human modification of extinct animal remains, such as Pleistocene megafauna, is challenging due to the similarity of anthropogenic and non-anthropogenic taphonomic features observed under optical microscopy. Here, we re-investigate a Late Pleistocene ground sloth tooth from northeast Brazil, previously suggested as human-modified based only on optical observation. To characterize the macro- and micro-morphological characteristics of the marks preserved in this tooth and evaluate potential human modification, we used stereomicroscope and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) supplemented by energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), UV photoluminescence (UV/PL), synchrotron-based X-ray fluorescence (SR-XRF), and synchrotron micro-computed tomography (SR-µCT). These methods allowed us to discriminate non-anthropogenic taphonomic features (root and sedimentary damage), anthropogenic marks, and histological features. The latter shows the infiltration of exogenous elements into the dentine from the sediments. Our evidence demonstrates the sequence of anthropogenic and non-anthropogenic taphonomic modification of this tooth and supports its initial intentional modification by humans. We highlight the benefits of emerging imaging and spectral imaging techniques to investigate and diagnose human modification in fossil and archaeological records and propose that human modification of tooth tissues should be further considered when studying possibly anthropogenically altered fossil remains. Skeletal ontogeny of xenarthrans is poorly known, especially because of the paucity of study specimens from distinct developmental stages. Here, we investigate morphometric aspects of the mandible ontogeny in the two-toed sloths, Choloepus spp. We examined mandibles of infant, juveniles and subadult sloths that were present in kill assemblages of harpy eagles, Harpia harpyja, and complemented our study with adult museum specimens. We carried out uni- and multivariate linear morphometric analyzes to assess the growth pattern of the mandible. Harpy eagles did not prey on adult two-toed sloths, preferring younger individuals. We found an overall strong correlation between the total length of the mandible and other mandibular measurements across age classes, with some of them scaling isometrically, and others presenting allometric growth. Also, morphometric data correlated with patterns of symphysial fusion across ontogenetic stages, rendering the latter a reliable indicator of the animal's age category. Although it was necessary to complement our sample with museum material, individuals obtained from the harpy eagle kill assemblage proved to be a valuable complementary source of specimens to be studied. Jigsaw puzzle solving, the problem of constructing a coherent whole from a set of non-overlapping unordered visual fragments, is fundamental to numerous applications, and yet most of the literature of the last two decades has focused thus far on less realistic puzzles whose pieces are identical squares. Here we formalize a new type of jigsaw puzzle where the pieces are general convex polygons generated by cutting through a global polygonal shape/image with an arbitrary number of straight cuts, a generation model inspired by the celebrated Lazy caterer's sequence. We analyze the theoretical properties of such puzzles, including the inherent challenges in solving them once pieces are contaminated with geometrical noise. To cope with such difficulties and obtain tractable solutions, we abstract the problem as a multi-body spring-mass dynamical system endowed with hierarchical loop constraints and a layered reconstruction process. The monotypic genus Prasiolopsis has been known for a long time, but is often overlooked because of difficulties in identification and the morphological variability between uniseriate filaments and cell packages forming pseudoparenchymatic thalli depending on age. We investigated a strain (SAG 84.81) originally denoted as Trichophilus welckeri, which was isolated from the hairs of the sloth Bradypus tridactylus, and compared it with other available strains of Prasiolopsis and of the sister genus Pseudomarvania. Our investigations clearly showed that this strain differed in morphology, especially of the chloroplast, from those originally described for Trichophilus. Phylogenetic analyses of the SSU and ITS rDNA sequences revealed that the strain SAG 84.81 is sister to several strains of P. ramosa within the Prasiola clade (Trebouxiophyceae). Using the ITS-2/CBC approach, we clearly demonstrated that this strain represented a new species of Prasiolopsis, which we proposed here as P. wulf-kochii. In addition, we evaluated the ITS-2/CBC approach by comparing it with the two species of Pseudomarvania. All investigated strains showed CBCs and HCBCs, which support their species delimitation. The sequencing data of Trichophilus welckeri available in GenBank were phylogenetically re-evaluated by including all representatives of the Ulotrichales (Ulvophyceae). Mylodon darwinii is an extinct terrestrial species of sloth with a wide fossil record in South America, the record of the skin and hairs found from "La Cueva del Milodón", Chile. More than a century after the first studies on its hair, we aimed to redescribe the morphological characteristics of the hairs of M. darwinii by applying modern protocols of trichology and microscopy. Hair patterns were also compared with those of two other extinct species of sloths available in the literature. Hairs from mummified specimen housed in Museo de La Plata (Argentina) were analyzed through light and scanning electron microscopy to identify their cuticular and medullary patterns. Guard hairs lack medulla and have a wavy cuticle with irregular scale orientation, while underhairs have an amorphous cuticle pattern and no medulla. Hence, the former ones help in the diagnosis of the hair morphology of the species, while the latter ones do not. Differences found in the final product of each microscopy technique are discussed and should be considered in future research. The outcomes presented herein are a step further toward the understanding of evolutionary processes within Xenarthra, providing important data for such a poorly studied group that has only been recorded in Central and South America. We present a lazy incremental search algorithm, Lifelong-GLS (L-GLS), along with its bounded suboptimal version, Bounded L-GLS (B-LGLS) that combine the search efficiency of incremental search algorithms with the evaluation efficiency of lazy search algorithms for fast replanning in problem domains where edge evaluations are more expensive than vertex expansions. The proposed algorithms generalize Lifelong Planning A* (LPA*) and its bounded suboptimal version, Truncated LPA* (TLPA*), within the Generalized Lazy Search (GLS) framework, so as to restrict expensive edge evaluations only to the current shortest subpath when the cost-to-come inconsistencies are propagated during repair. We also present dynamic versions of the L-GLS and B-LGLS algorithms, called Generalized D* (GD*) and Bounded Generalized D* (B-GD*), respectively, for efficient replanning with non-stationary queries, designed specifically for navigation of mobile robots. We prove that the proposed algorithms are complete and correct in finding a solution that is guaranteed not to exceed the optimal solution cost by a user-chosen factor. Our numerical and experimental results support the claim that the proposed integration of the incremental and lazy search frameworks can help find solutions faster compared to the regular incremental or regular lazy search algorithms when the underlying graph representation changes often. Sloth bears are non‐carnivorous yet they attack more people than any other bear. They often stand up and charge explosively if a person mistakenly gets too close. Here, we argue that their aggression toward humans is an extension of their behavior toward tigers, which are their only natural predator. Interactions between sloth bears and tigers have not previously been studied because scientists have rarely observed such events. We collected and examined 43 videos or photo documentations of sloth bear–tiger interactions posted on the internet or social media from 2011 to 2023, mainly by tourists visiting tiger parks in India. We observed that sloth bears were most likely to stand up and charge if they first became aware of the tiger at close range (<3 m away). This aggressive–defensive strategy, intended to dissuade the tiger from attacking, appeared to be successful, in that 86% of interactions ended with no contact, whereas four (9%) culminated in the bear's death. We propose that a myrmecophagous diet led to this species' aggressive behavior: (1) their long, blunt front claws, well adapted for digging termites and ants, hamper their ability to climb trees for escape, and (2) they walk with their head down focused on scents underground, and make considerable noise digging and blowing soil, enabling tigers to approach quite closely without being detected. Sloth bears have coexisted with tigers or other (now extinct) large felid predators for their entire evolutionary history. Whereas their aggressive behavior has served them well for millions of years, more recently, people's fear of and retaliation against sloth bears represents a major threat to their survival. Understanding how sloth bears react to tigers provides guidance for reducing attacks on humans, thereby contributing to sloth bear conservation. The first step towards understanding the conservation situation and informing conservation decision‐making is to identify the habitat loss drivers. However, for nearly all tropical biota, there is a glaring lack of information on the spatiotemporal patterns of anthropogenic drivers.Our objective was to analyse the spatial and temporal distribution of the main anthropogenic drivers of habitat loss for Bradypus torquatus and Bradypus crinitus, two endangered and endemic species to the Brazilian Atlantic Forest.We used land‐use information associated with seven major IUCN‐based threats to sloths, covering a three‐generation time window (1988–2020), to quantify the current area occupied, temporal changes, heterogeneity, and intensity of drivers across species distributions.We found that cattle farming and ranching dominate the range of both species (from 49% to 56%) and cover an area larger than the remaining native forest. Other drivers also represent important spatial and temporal features of land conversion across species distributions.Driven mainly by livestock expansion, both sloth species have experienced a significant loss of forest cover (Bradypus torquatus – 659098.70 ha; Bradypus crinitus – 139013.20 ha) in the Brazilian Atlantic forest. Overall, Bradypus torquatus showed a higher rate of deforestation than forest regeneration, whereas forest gains outweighed habitat loss for Bradypus crinitus.Our results show that a substantial area of native forest – essential for strictly arboreal species – is being continuously replaced by cattle ranching and agricultural activities, which may lead to population isolation and decline, threatening the long‐term population viability. This essay proposes an interpretation of Keats's Odes of 1819 predicated on a reading of the Ode on Indolence. The Ode is shown to be articulating a crisis endemic to Keats's perception of the foundations of his vocation as a poet. The crisis originates in the poet's increasing self-doubt regarding his ability to achieve the virtue of 'negative capability' he associated with the writers he strove to emulate. Keats's representation of these anxieties was informed to a significant degree by a recognition that neither the Classical models he revered, nor the Christian faith he had been brought up in, and which played an important role in his formal education, provided a promise of the immortality he craved both for his poetry, and latterly for himself, as his health began to deteriorate. The composition of Ode on Indolence lies at the centre of a matrix of thought within which the other Odes of 1819 unite to become a thematically linked requiem lamenting the demise of Keats's career as a poet, as well as the fragility of his own mortality. This paper describes a maintenance scheduling model for digester banks. Digester banks are network-connected assets that lie on the critical path of the Bayer process, a chemical refinement process that converts bauxite ore into alumina. The banks require different maintenance activities at different due times. Furthermore, the maintenance schedule is subject to production-related constraints and resource limitations. Given the complexity of scheduling maintenance for large fleets of digester banks, a continuous-time, mixed-integer linear program is formulated to find the cost-minimising maintenance schedule that satisfies all required constraints. A solution approach that employs lazy constraints and Benders decomposition is proposed to solve the model. Unlike generic implementations of Benders decomposition, we show that the subproblems can be solved explicitly using a specialist algorithm. In this unit, students explore the phylogeography of three-toed sloths (Bradypus pygmaeus and Bradypus variegatus) endemic to the Bocas del Toro islands off the Caribbean coast of Panama. After learning about the geologic history of this region, students measure model sloth skulls from each of the islands and compile that data into scatterplots. Students then analyze the scatterplots to make conclusions about which geographic factors best account for the regional variance in sloth body size. The sequence of activities was designed for high school life science classrooms using the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) framework and teaches the disciplinary core idea LS3.B Variation of Traits. This lesson was taught in an integrated co-teaching classroom, a special education classroom, and a ninth-grade general biology classroom. Public employees are stereotyped as lazy, inefficient, and slow. When made aware of such stereotypes, they may experience stereotype threat that impairs their task-performance. Across two pre-registered, large-scale between-subjects experiments (n1 = 1,543; n2 = 1,147), we found that performance in terms of task correctness, processing time, and effort was unaffected by information of negative public employee stereotypes. Our results do not indicate stereotype threat effects for public employees in terms of task-performance. This finding offers valuable theoretical and practical implications for the understanding of public sector stereotypes and public sector reputation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Procrastination is one of the most researched and polemized topics of interest to domestic and foreign scientists due to its widespread prevalence among students and adults. The authors agree that syste matic violation of deadlines for necessary tasks completion causes subjective discomfort, but this behavior is regularly manifested in ordinary life, becoming “chronic” in nature. The purpose of the study is to analyze the phenomenon of procrastination. The work was based on the theoretical analysis of literature, generalization, empirical research results interpretation, conducted on the basis of a bank of techniques: E. Yu. Mandrikova’s questionnaire of self-organization of activity, K. Lay’s academic procrastination scale, Melbourne questionnaire of decision-making in the adaptation of T. V. Kornilova and S. A. Kornilova. Procrastination is similar to manifestations of laziness, low level of motivation and volitional self-regulation, awareness of the consequences of one’s own inaction, behavioral patterns repetition stability. However, thereare cardinal differences among them: laziness correlates with neutral or positive emotional background, hedonistic orientation, orientation to the present time, irresponsibility, and strength saving. Procrastination is built on burdensome experiences, mental immersion in the events of the past or future. It is energy-consuming, can lead to ideas destruction about one’s own personality and chronic diseases. Negative emotional background, weak self-control and low self-regulation are all prerequisites for developing procrastination and dependence on digital reality. The study results can be applied in the activities of teachers and practical psychologists, allowing to recognize and level procrastination manifestations.

In 2004, Frieze, Krivelevich and Martin established the emergence of a giant component in random subgraphs of pseudo‐random graphs. We study several typical properties of the giant component, most notably its expansion characteristics. We establish an asymptotic vertex expansion of connected sets in the giant by a factor of Õϵ2$$ \overset{\widetilde }{O}\left({\epsilon}^2\right) $$. From these expansion properties, we derive that the diameter of the giant is whpOϵ(logn)$$ {O}_{\epsilon}\left(\log n\right) $$, and that the mixing time of a lazy random walk on the giant is asymptotically Oϵlog2n$$ {O}_{\epsilon}\left({\log}^2n\right) $$. We also show similar asymptotic expansion properties of (not necessarily connected) linear‐sized subsets in the giant, and the typical existence of a large expander as a subgraph. Although extinct sloths exhibited a wide range of dietary habits, modes of locomotion, and occupied various niches across the Americas, modern sloths are considered quite similar in their habits. The dietary habits of living sloths can be directly observed in the wild, and understanding the mechanical behavior of their jaws during chewing through finite element analysis (FEA) provides a valuable validation tool for comparative analysis with their extinct counterparts. In this study, we used FEA to simulate the mechanical behavior of sloth mandibles under lateral mastication loads, using it as a proxy for oral processing. Our research focused on the six extant sloth species to better understand their diets and validate the use of FEA for studying their extinct relatives. We found that all living sloths have the predominancy of low‐stress areas in their mandibles but with significant differences. Choloepus didactylus had larger high‐stress areas, which could be linked to a reduced need for processing tougher foods as an opportunistic generalist. Bradypus variegatus and Choloepus hoffmanni are shown to be similar, displaying large low‐stress areas, indicating greater oral processing capacity in a seasonal and more competitive environment. Bradypus torquatus, Bradypus pygmaeus, and Bradypus tridactylus exhibited intermediary processing patterns, which can be linked to a stable food supply in more stable environments and a reduced requirement for extensive oral processing capacity. This study sheds light on extant sloths' dietary adaptations and has implications for understanding the ecological roles and evolutionary history of their extinct counterparts. Simple Summary: There are few available data on the venous anatomy of Choloepus didactylus, particularly in living subjects. This study highlights the unique venous anatomy of this species in a non-invasive, retrospective, and reproducible manner, to enhance our understanding of this understudied species. The venous anatomy of the two-toed sloth (Choloepus didactylus) remains poorly understood, particularly in living specimens due to the limitations of traditional cadaveric studies. This study aims to describe the unique venous structures of Choloepus didactylus using computed tomography, enhancing our understanding of this species in a live setting. Three living Choloepus didactylus underwent CT scans as part of routine clinical assessments. The images were reconstructed using 3D Slicer software (version 5.6.2), focusing on the caudal vena cava anatomy. The reconstructions confirmed the presence of a significant intravertebral vein, showing complex venous connections through the ventral sacral foramen and vertebral foramina. These findings highlight notable anatomical variations and challenge existing literature on the species' venous architecture. By employing modern imaging technologies, this research provides new insights into the venous anatomy of Choloepus didactylus, demonstrating the value of non-invasive techniques in studying the anatomical features of live animals, thereby offering a foundation for further comparative and evolutionary studies. The stability problem of power grids has become increasingly serious in recent years as the size of novel power systems increases. In order to improve and ensure the stable operation of the novel power system, this study proposes an artificial emotional lazy Q-learning method, which combines artificial emotion, lazy learning, and reinforcement learning for static security and stability analysis of power systems. Moreover, this study compares the analysis results of the proposed method with those of the small disturbance method for a stand-alone power system and verifies that the proposed lazy Q-learning method is able to effectively screen useful data for learning, and improve the static security stability of the new type of power system more effectively than the traditional proportional-integral-differential control and Q-learning methods. In multi‐agent search planning for a randomly moving and camouflaging target, we examine heterogeneous searchers that differ in terms of their endurance level, travel speed, and detection ability. This leads to a convex mixed‐integer nonlinear program, which we reformulate using three linearization techniques. We develop preprocessing steps, outer approximations via lazy constraints, and bundle‐based cutting plane methods to address large‐scale instances. Further specializations emerge when the target moves according to a Markov chain. We carry out an extensive numerical study to show the computational efficiency of our methods and to derive insights regarding which approach should be favored for which type of problem instance. Concept drift is a phenomenon where the distribution of data streams changes over time. When this happens, model predictions become less accurate. Hence, models built in the past need to be re-learned for the current data. Two design questions need to be addressed in designing a strategy to re-learn models: which type of concept drift has occurred, and how to utilize the drift type to improve re-learning performance. Existing drift detection methods are often good at determining when drift has occurred. However, few retrieve information about how the drift came to be present in the stream. Hence, determining the impact of the type of drift on adaptation is difficult. Filling this gap, we designed a framework based on a lazy strategy called Type-Driven Lazy Drift Adaptor (Type-LDA). Type-LDA first retrieves information about both how and when a drift has occurred, then it uses this information to re-learn the new model. To identify the type of drift, a drift type identifier is pre-trained on synthetic data of known drift types. Furthermore, a drift point locator locates the optimal point of drift via a sharing loss. Hence, Type-LDA can select the optimal point, according to the drift type, to re-learn the new model. Experiments validate Type-LDA on both synthetic data and real-world data, and the results show that accurately identifying drift type can improve adaptation accuracy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recursive state machines (RSMs) are state-based models for procedural programs with wide-ranging applications in program verification and interprocedural analysis. Model-checking algorithms for RSMs and related formalisms have been intensively studied in the literature. In this article, we devise a new model-checking algorithm for RSMs and requirements in computation tree logic (CTL) that exploits the compositional structure of RSMs by ternary model checking in combination with a lazy evaluation scheme. Specifically, a procedural component is only analyzed in those cases in which it might influence the satisfaction of the CTL requirement. We implemented our model-checking algorithms and evaluate them on randomized scalability benchmarks and on an interprocedural data-flow analysis of Java programs, showing both practical applicability and significant speedups in comparison to state-of-the-art model-checking tools for procedural programs. Identifying individual animals, especially in large mammals, is an important goal for wildlife biologists and managers. Bears, occupying diverse habitats, face and experience significant conflict. Among Asian bears, the sloth bear Melursus ursinus (Shaw, 1791; Vulnerable IUCN Red List) is reported vulnerable due to negative interactions with humans, requiring solutions like identifying bear individuals using morphological features. To do so, we used an image-comparison algorithm to evaluate the uniqueness of chest markings using structural similarity index (SSIM) and trained a deep learning model based on the EfficientNet architecture for predicting an individual bear classification. We collected 1567 images (of 144 bears) to examine individual-level differences in chestmark patterns. The comparison yielded 98% accuracy in differentiating chestmarks as a unique pattern for an individual. Subsequently, we trained a circular classification model based on EfficientNet framework using augmented 5628 images for training (80%; of 115 bears), which was validated over 95% for top one and 99% for five individual predictions on 1407 testing images (20%; of 115 bears). The final step involved passing 58 non-augmented images (of 29 out-of-train bears), and the top five predictions of closely similar patterns suggested by the model were then manually compared for similarities in shapes, which suggested whether the image belonged to a new individual. The high accuracy of comparison and classification models suggests the potential applicability of this technique for helping maintain the ex-situ bear database, identifying the conflict individual and estimating bear populations. Kerstersia gyiorum is a Gram-negative bacterium found in various animals, including humans, where it has been associated with various infections. Knowledge of the basic biology of K. gyiorum is essential to understand the evolutionary strategies of niche adaptation and how this organism contributes to infectious diseases; however, genomic data about K. gyiorum is very limited, especially from non-human hosts. In this work, we sequenced 12 K. gyiorum genomes isolated from healthy free-living brown-throated sloths (Bradypus variegatus) in the Parque Estadual das Fontes do Ipiranga (São Paulo, Brazil), and compared them with genomes from isolates of human origin, in order to gain insights into genomic diversity, phylogeny, and host specialization of this species. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that these K. gyiorum strains are structured according to host. Despite the fact that sloth isolates were sampled from a single geographic location, the intra-sloth K. gyiorum diversity was divided into three clusters, with differences of more than 1,000 single nucleotide polymorphisms between them, suggesting the circulation of various K. gyiorum lineages in sloths. Genes involved in mobilome and defense mechanisms against mobile genetic elements were the main source of gene content variation between isolates from different hosts. Sloth-specific K. gyiorum genome features include an IncN2 plasmid, a phage sequence, and a CRISPR-Cas system. The broad diversity of defense elements in K. gyiorum (14 systems) may prevent further mobile element flow and explain the low amount of mobile genetic elements in K. gyiorum genomes. Gene content variation may be important for the adaptation of K. gyiorum to different host niches. BackgroundThe transition from school to university is often accompanied by a change in students’ lifestyles. So far little is known whether convenience behavior is an essential factor affecting students’ health and social interaction. In a heterogeneous population regard to sociodemographic and anthropometric characteristics the Convenience Behavior Questionnaire (CBQ) showed a better relationship between convenience-related behavior with overweight and obesity than established questionnaires. Here we assessed convenience behavior in a large well characterized cohort of university students and its association with health-related (mainly sedentary behavior and physical activity), study-related and sociodemographic factors with the Convenience Behavior Questionnaire (CBQ).MethodsA total of 4,351 students participated in an online survey, of which 3,983 (23.6 ± 5.3 years old, 71.3% females) answered the questions concerning convenience behavior. A low value in the CBQ indicates more convenience behavior [Convenience Behavior Index (CBI) range: 3–15]. Humans coordinate their eye, head, and body movements to gather information from a dynamic environment while maximizing reward and minimizing biomechanical and energetic costs. However, such natural behavior is not possible in traditional experiments employing head/body restraints and artificial, static stimuli. Therefore, it is unclear to what extent mechanisms of fixation selection discovered in lab studies, such as inhibition-of-return (IOR), influence everyday behavior. To address this gap, participants performed nine real-world tasks, including driving, visually searching for an item, and building a Lego set, while wearing a mobile eye tracker (169 recordings; 26.6 h). Surprisingly, in all tasks, participants most often returned to what they just viewed and saccade latencies were shorter preceding return than forward saccades, i.e., consistent with facilitation, rather than inhibition, of return. We hypothesize that conservation of eye and head motor effort ("laziness") contributes. Correspondingly, we observed center biases in fixation position and duration relative to the head's orientation. A model that generates scanpaths by randomly sampling these distributions reproduced all return phenomena we observed, including distinct 3-fixation sequences for forward versus return saccades. After controlling for orbital eccentricity, one task (building a Lego set) showed evidence for IOR. This, along with small discrepancies between model and data, indicates that the brain balances minimization of motor costs with maximization of rewards (e.g., accomplished by IOR and other mechanisms) and that the optimal balance varies according to task demands. In this paper, we present a novel DILTS algorithm that uses a new approach inspired by the energy efficiency of dragonflies. The algorithm optimizes the energy-harvesting mechanisms in IoT devices, inspired by the way dragonflies use wind energy to fly. A sophisticated algorithm optimizes power consumption during task execution, saving energy and speeding up tasks while maintaining the application throughput. The algorithm leverages lazy task scheduling (LTS) to enhance task execution performance. The proposed algorithm evaluates the energy levels of each task and implements an LTS method. This LTS approach improves performance and task management by streamlining scheduling data and reducing overhead. The LTS model reliably optimizes the energy across microbenchmarks and real-time IoT devices. To assess the efficiency and practicality of our algorithm, we compared it to four alternatives. Our novel algorithm outperformed the others with a chip area of 856 μm2, performance speed of 7.11 ns, scheduling accuracy of 94%, and response time of 2.61 ns. Our simulations showed that our proposed method reduced energy consumption by up to 10.02% compared to existing methods. We evaluated the performance of the algorithms on a Zynq 7000 FPGA using the Xilinx Vivado platform via simulations. Our novel algorithm can improve the energy efficiency of green data centers. A local anaesthetic block performed in cranial and mandibular foramina contributes towards analgesia and the reduction of systemic anaesthesia in procedures in the oral cavity. However, anatomical differences between in wild animals may require adaptations to the anaesthetic and surgical manoeuvres of the head used in domestic animals. With that in mind, we aimed to describe the topography and morphometry of the infraorbital and mandibular foramina in Bradypus variegatus, to support perineural anaesthetic approaches in the cranio‐mandibular region of this species. We demonstrated that in B. variegatus there is no significant variability in the morphometric data, allowing access to the studied foramina to occur in a similar way in adult individuals. Finally, we understand that the techniques for the infraorbital and mandibular foramen needed to be adapted due to the anatomical singularities of the species, which culminated in new reference points for more assertive needle positioning. The diets of the eight species of ursids range from carnivory (e.g., polar bears, Ursus maritimus) to insectivory (e.g., sloth bears, Melursus ursinus), omnivory (e.g., brown bears, U. arctos), and herbivory (e.g., giant pandas, Ailuropoda melanoleuca). Dietary energy availability ranges from the high-fat, highly digestible, calorically dense diet of polar bears (~ 6.4 kcal digestible energy/g fresh weight) to the high-fiber, poorly digestible, calorically restricted diet (~ 0.7) of giant pandas. Thus, ursids provide the opportunity to examine the extent to which dietary energy drives evolution of energy metabolism in a closely related group of animals. We measured the daily energy expenditure (DEE) of captive brown bears in a relatively large, zoo-type enclosure and compared those values to previously published results on captive brown bears, captive and free-ranging polar bears, and captive and free-ranging giant pandas. We found that all three species have similar mass-specific DEE when travel distances and energy intake are normalized even though their diets differ dramatically and phylogenetic lineages are separated by millions of years. For giant pandas, the ability to engage in low-cost stationary foraging relative to more wide-ranging bears likely provided the necessary energy savings to become bamboo specialists without greatly altering their metabolic rate. What do we owe to the lazy? On the assumption that the lazy are a paradigmatic case of people who are worse off, when they are through a fault, or choice, of their own, one might suspect that the answer is: not very much. This article shows that this suspicion is simple-minded. Four notions of laziness are distinguished. It is then shown that these notions differ – even from a luck egalitarian perspective – in ways bearing on the question of what is owed to the lazy. Both authorship and spelling of the extinct giant sloth genus Megalonyx and its type species, M. jeffersonii (Mammalia, Xenarthra, Pilosa, Megalonychidae), have been inconsistent. The genus-group name has been cited with two different authorships and three dates, and it has been spelled with two different suffixes. The species-group name has been cited with four different authors and dates, and it has been spelled with two different endings. Megalonyx Jefferson, 1799 is the first valid use of the genus-group name; the correct original spelling has the –onyx suffix. The type species of Megalonyx is Megatherium jeffersonii Desmarest, 1822; the correct original spelling has an –ii ending. Sloth bears (Melursus ursinus) are listed as Vulnerable on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of threatened species with a global population estimate of <17,000 individuals. In southwestern Nepal, Shuklaphanta National Park includes the largest uninterrupted expanse of grassland in the region and provides suitable habitat for sloth bears. No records of sloth bears from Shuklaphanta National Park, however, have been reported since 2013. We present the first photographic evidence of a sloth bear in Shuklaphanta National Park in a decade. In addition, we observed a Bengal tiger (Panthera tigris tigris) at the same location as the sloth bear 5 days later. These observations highlight the need for further research into the occurrence and movements of sloth bears in this region as well as the extent of co-occupancy and types of interactions between sloth bears and tigers. Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophen):polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) is a conductive polymer composite commonly used as a hole-transporting material in various optoelectronic devices. Here, we show that both real and imaginary components of the impedance of a micrometer-thick drop-cast PEDOT:PSS layer measured perpendicular to the layer plane are strongly nonlinear and vary with both amplitude and frequency of the externally applied field. In thinner layers, the impedance approaches linearity; impedances of layers thinner than 100 nm are almost linear within the investigated field and frequency ranges. Impedance nonlinearity is more profound at low-frequencies and almost disappears above 1 kHz. The experimental results are described based on the complex polarization mechanisms prevailing at low-frequencies due to the lazy dynamics of the massive interfacial dipoles formed between PEDOT and PSS chains. The nonlinear impedance of a 2.0 μm-thick layer is utilized for the design and fabrication of a harmonic generator, a frequency adder, and a up/down converter operating at very low frequencies. Operations of a micrometer-thick drop-cast dot of PEDOT:PSS, as a second and third harmonic generator and a passive intermodulator in the frequency range of biological signals are demonstrated. This study comprises a comparative description of the skull anatomy in the basal megatherioid sloth Schismotherium fractum, based on specimens from the Santa Cruz Formation (late early Miocene; Santacrucian SALMA) in southern Argentine Patagonia. We provide more detailed descriptions and illustrations of the skull bones and their sutural connections, as well as the cranial foramina and their contents, than have previously been available. The anatomy in S. fractum is compared to contemporaneous basal megatherioids from Santa Cruz, Hapalops elongatus and Pelecyodon cristatus. The latter is a close relative of S. fractum in several phylogenetic analyses, but given the high levels of anatomical variation and other taxonomic uncertainties that surround these sloths, previous authors have suggested that the two may not represent distinct taxa. Our observations demonstrate that although the skulls of S. fractum do indeed exhibit variation in a broad variety of features, there are invariant, apomorphic features that consistently distinguish Schismotherium and Pelecyodon from one another, including at least 17 features derived from virtually every region of the skull. While supporting the current taxonomic status of these important, basal-most megatherioids, the present study highlights the need for further anatomical and phylogenetic investigations of Santacrucian sloths. Most evolutionary algorithms have multiple parameters and their values drastically affect the performance. Due to the often complicated interplay of the parameters, setting these values right for a particular problem (parameter tuning) is a challenging task. This task becomes even more complicated when the optimal parameter values change significantly during the run of the algorithm since then a dynamic parameter choice (parameter control) is necessary. In this work, we propose a lazy but effective solution, namely choosing all parameter values (where this makes sense) in each iteration randomly from a suitably scaled power-law distribution. To demonstrate the effectiveness of this approach, we perform runtime analyses of the (1 + (λ , λ)) genetic algorithm with all three parameters chosen in this manner. We show that this algorithm on the one hand can imitate simple hill-climbers like the (1 + 1) EA, giving the same asymptotic runtime on problems like OneMax, LeadingOnes, or Minimum Spanning Tree. On the other hand, this algorithm is also very efficient on jump functions, where the best static parameters are very different from those necessary to optimize simple problems. We prove a performance guarantee that is comparable to the best performance known for static parameters. For the most interesting case that the jump size k is constant, we prove that our performance is asymptotically better than what can be obtained with any static parameter choice. Endemic to the Indian subcontinent, the sloth bear (Melursus ursinus) is a threatened species, present in fragmented habitats across India. Field techniques such as direct observation and camera trapping alone are not sufficient and may not be explicit enough to understand a monomorphic species like the sloth bear at larger spatial scales. In this study, we looked into the genetic structure, variability and population demographics amongst the extant sloth bear populations in the highly fragmented Vidarbha landscape, using a panel of 13 microsatellite markers with a cumulative PID value of 1.48 × 10−5 PIDsibs. Our results revealed genetic clustering (K = 5) and moderate structuring amongst the study populations. Despite being geographically distant and placed in two different genetic clusters, sloth bears from the Melghat Tiger Reserve and Sahyadri Tiger Reserve shared genetic signatures, indicating connectivity, while migration was detected amongst other study areas as well. The findings from this study can serve as baseline assessment for future genetic monitoring of the species in the human-dominated landscape and assist in managerial decisions to step up protection of fragmented forest patches and reduce human–bear conflicts without compromising on the genetic connectivity. Background: Plants adjust their growth orientations primarily in response to light and gravity signals. Considering that the gravity vector is fixed and the angle of light incidence is constantly changing, plants must somehow integrate these signals to establish organ orientation, commonly referred to as gravitropic set-point angle (GSA). The IGT gene family contains known regulators of GSA, including the gene clades LAZY, DEEPER ROOTING (DRO), and TILLER ANGLE CONTROL (TAC). Results: Here, we investigated the influence of light on different aspects of GSA phenotypes in LAZY and DRO mutants, as well as the influence of known light signaling pathways on IGT gene expression. Phenotypic analysis revealed that LAZY and DRO genes are collectively required for changes in the angle of shoot branch tip and root growth in response to light. Single lazy1 mutant branch tips turn upward in the absence of light and in low light, similar to wild-type, and mimic triple and quadruple IGT mutants in constant light and high-light conditions, while triple and quadruple IGT/LAZY mutants show little to no response to changing light regimes. Further, the expression of IGT/LAZY genes is differentially influenced by daylength, circadian clock, and light signaling. Conclusions: Collectively, the data show that differential expression of LAZY and DRO genes are required to enable plants to alter organ angles in response to light-mediated signals. The Choloepus didactylus is a species belonging to the Choloepodidae family of the Folivora suborder. This study concerns the anatomical, morphometrical, histological and histochemical examination of the eye tunics, eyelids and orbital glands in the three adult Choloepus didactylus coming from the Wroclaw Zoological Garden. The cornea consists of four layers since Bowman's membrane was absent. The presence of palisades of Vogt formed from 14/15 to 20/21 layers of epithelial cells was demonstrated. Macroscopically, the tapetum lucidum was not identified, while degenerative choroidal tapetum lucidum cellulosum was found microscopically. The ciliary muscle was found with our histological approach. The pupil was round in shape (post‐mortem). The presence of tarsal glands has not been demonstrated in both eyelids. The conjunctiva‐associated lymphoid tissue (CALT) has been shown in the upper and lower eyelids. The superficial gland of the third eyelid produced a seromucous secretion. The third eyelid was shaped like a curved arch and composed of hyaline cartilage. The deep gland of the third eyelid was big and multilobar acinar simple with serous character. The lacrimal gland produced mucous secretion. The results of our research indicate that the features of the eye anatomy in the southern two‐toed sloth (C. didactylus) are also typical of the Folivora suborder and have common features and differences with Vermilingua. Despite the alleged increasing importance given to politicians' personalities, the similarities and differences between citizens and politicians regarding their personality traits have been insufficiently studied. This research analyses the personality similarities and differences between citizens and politicians in Spain across party allegiances and ideologies. For this, we use two representative surveys for citizens and MPs. Our results show that Spanish politicians are a more homogeneous population—regarding their personality traits—than Spanish citizens, and that Spanish MPs are more sociable and imaginative and less lazy and artistic than the average citizen, which is consistent with a 'politician's personality'. Combining morphological and molecular characters through Bayesian total-evidence dating allows inferring the phylogenetic and timescale framework of both extant and fossil taxa, while accounting for the stochasticity and incompleteness of the fossil record. Such an integrative approach is particularly needed when dealing with clades such as sloths (Mammalia: Folivora), for which developmental and biomechanical studies have shown high levels of morphological convergence whereas molecular data can only account for a limited percentage of their total species richness. Here, we propose an alternative hypothesis of sloth evolution that emphasizes the pervasiveness of morphological convergence and the importance of considering the fossil record and an adequate taxon sampling in both phylogenetic and biogeographic inferences. Regardless of different clock models and morphological datasets, the extant sloth Bradypus is consistently recovered as a megatherioid, and Choloepus as a mylodontoid, in agreement with molecular-only analyses. The recently extinct Caribbean sloths (Megalocnoidea) are found to be a monophyletic sister-clade of Megatherioidea, in contrast to previous phylogenetic hypotheses. Our results contradict previous morphological analyses and further support the polyphyly of "Megalonychidae," whose members were found in five different clades. Regardless of taxon sampling and clock models, the Caribbean colonization of sloths is compatible with the exhumation of islands along Aves Ridge and its geological time frame. Overall, our total-evidence analysis illustrates the difficulty of positioning highly incomplete fossils, although a robust phylogenetic framework was recovered by an a posteriori removal of taxa with high percentages of missing characters. Elimination of these taxa improved topological resolution by reducing polytomies and increasing node support. However, it introduced a systematic and geographic bias because most of these incomplete specimens are from northern South America. This is evident in biogeographic reconstructions, which suggest Patagonia as the area of origin of many clades when taxa are underrepresented, but Amazonia and/or Central and Southern Andes when all taxa are included. More generally, our analyses demonstrate the instability of topology and divergence time estimates when using different morphological datasets and clock models and thus caution against making macroevolutionary inferences when node support is weak or when uncertainties in the fossil record are not considered. We define and study a term calculus implementing higher-order node replication. It is used to specify two different (weak) evaluation strategies: call-by-name and fully lazy call-by-need, that are shown to be observationally equivalent by using type theoretical technical tools. This research delves into the phenomenon of citation errors in academia, focusing on a specific case where renowned behavioural economist George Loewenstein incorrectly attributed a quote to William Stanley Jevons instead of his son Herbert Stanley Jevons. This unique setting serves as a "radioactive tracer" to investigate the presence of intentional laziness in academic practices, as opposed to unintentional errors. We find that research citing Loewenstein's paper were significantly more likely to make the same mistake than papers that did not. On the other hand, others citing a subsequent paper by Loewenstein—in which he rectified the error—are not subject to those mistakes. Moreover, those who cited additional works by Jevons, regardless of whether they were authored by William S. or Herbert S., were less likely to commit the error. Additionally, scholars who obtained their PhD from higher-ranked institutions were less likely to make the mistake. Interestingly, papers with female authors were less likely to make such a mistake.
