Recently, the number of cyber-physical systems and systems with embedded sensors has been increasing. In order to minimize the amount of information transmitted, a new paradigm is being developed that involves moving data processing as close as possible to the point of its generation. At the same time, there is a need to create devices that will provide computations near the sensors. The article considers an approach to the primary processing of a quasi-digital sensor signal. The authors show a variant of the organization of calculations in pulse form, based on the method of small increments. The method is focused on the usage of simple logical elements with the realization of a transfer function in the base of increment/decrement operations. The solution proposed by the authors is effective in terms of simplicity of hardware implementation and can be used to connect sensors with pulse output to digital processing systems. The considered circuit solutions can be used for the implementation in programmable logic device of different levels of complexity, as well as for the manufacture of the transducer in the form of a custom circuit. - Abstract
This volume integrates multimodal theoretical frameworks with those from graphic communication and information design and applies this critical synthesis to the examination of the changes and relationships that occur when multimodal documents are distributed across various means and channels of consumption. Drawing on examples from popular newspapers and store catalogs, the book's specific focus is on documents as sets, here defined as the collective of all the assorted forms of a document published across multiple mediums and modes. This approach affords a multi-layered analysis of multimodal documents more broadly, in addition to engaging in questions about the very definition of a document and the terminology we use in relation to documents, including genres, mediums, and modes. As both a critical examination of the theoretical frameworks employed in literature on documents and a way forward for new approaches to analyzing multimodal texts, this volume is key reading for students and scholars in multimodality, graphic communication, design, media studies, and information science.

This paper focuses on the pedestrian evacuation simulation and layout optimization of the cruise ship on the basis of cellular automata. The deck is meshed, and coordinate difference method is used to obtain the distance from cell to the exit and influencing factors of the static floor field for pedestrian. Influencing factors of the dynamic floor field are also obtained with the attraction of mainstream crowd for pedestrians and mutual exclusivity of pedestrians taken into account. The transition probability of pedestrian is calculated by weighting influencing factors of the static floor field and the dynamic floor field and then establishing attraction factors for the global cell. The evacuation process is simulated with VC++, and the total of evacuation time steps is obtained. Based on this, cabins are converted to layout modules, and different attribute values are assigned to different types of modules. With changing positions of modules, new layout schemes are developed using genetic algorithm, and meanwhile, attraction factors of cells are updated. The layout scheme is optimized for smallest total of evacuation time steps which is 14.5% smaller than the original scheme. Furthermore, the influence of different factors on the evacuation efficiency is discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

MAGAZINE advertising ,PRINT advertising ,TYPOGRAPHIC design ,LAYOUT (Printing) ,VISUAL communication ,SOCIAL sciences - Abstract
We examine how the style of magazine advertisements changed between 1969 and 2002, using ads included in the Which Ad Pulled Best? (WAPB) editions published over that period. Six aspects of ad style are examined: the proportion of space allotted to pictures, the amount of body copy used, inclusion of the brand name in the headline, incorporation of the brand into the picture, the layout of pictures and text, and the presence or absence of a stand-alone brand block. Using contemporaneous copy test data from the WAPB editions, we show that the style elements that became more common were those that had been more effective, and those that became less common were those elements that had proved less effective. Results suggest that during this period consumers increasingly approached magazine ads as pictures to be viewed and not as documents to be read. In response, magazine advertisers adapted by altering their stylistic and design choices to give more weight to pictorial elements and less weight to verbal elements. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Author Timothy Samara has added more than 50 new diagrams and more than 100 new images of real-world projects with an increased emphasis on web and environmental design projects. The'20 Rules for Good Design'has been revisited and expanded to 25 Rules. The book covers all the design fundamentals from working with grids, color application, typography, imagery to finally how to put it all together. Expansion and new material includes: -Composition/layout, visual hierarchy -Form and composition in relation to concepts and meaning -Color psychology and narrative-Color coding-Reference palettes for time periods, cultures, and businesses -Special color and printing techniques -Combining type styles, editorial text setting issues, plus-Web-related type style and hierarchy issues -Strategies for using photography; design drawing; medium and meaning; pictorial and non-pictorial -image-making options; semiotics, symbolic and metaphorical image use; type as image-Making type and imagery work better together -Finding flexibility in design systems -The design process, from creative concept development and practical work-flow standpoints... -Plus a complete project case study with major decision-moments keyed to respective sections! Being a creative designer is often about coming up with unique design solutions. Unfortunately, when the basic rules of design are ignored in an effort to be distinctive, design becomes useless. In language, a departure from the rules is only appreciated as great literature if recognition of the rules underlies the text. Graphic design is a'visual language,'and brilliance is recognized in designers whose work seems to break all the rules, yet communicates its messages clearly. This book is a fun and accessible handbook that presents the fundamentals of design in lists, tips, brief text, and examples. Chapters include Graphic Design: What It Is; What Are They and What Do They Do?; 25 Basic Rules of Good Design; Form and Space-The Basics; Color Fundamentals; Choosing and Using Type; The World of Imagery; Putting it All Together? In this paper, we present an algorithm that solves a paper reel layout problem where the available space is divided into equal-size cells. The problem is to find a layout with the minimum transportation cost subject to adjacency and other constraints. A genetic algorithm is used in a two-stage iterative approach to solve the problem. Computational results seem to indicate the efficiency and effectiveness of the proposed solution method. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Nexkey Project is aimed at developing an android keyboard capable of identifying frequently used words to provide personalized and improved typing experience. It uses a prediction system that makes use of an Android API for implementation. The keyboard has an elastic layout that manipulates the selected key which is predicted to be clicked next and the victim key which is predicted to not be clicked. It gives the selected key more width and reduces width of the victim key. The application always looks for the victim key which could be on either side of the selected key. The proposed project can well provide an alternative to already available keyboards on the app store which provide on-screen suggestions, something which could easily be annoying for the users. Our application facilitates users to type in at high speed without looking at the keyboard. NexKey also reduces the use of backspace key as demonstrated through empirical validation of the project. In this paper, we study the problem of content-aware graphic design layout generation. We propose a deep generative model for graphic design layouts that is able to synthesize layout designs based on the visual and textual semantics of user inputs. Unlike previous approaches that are oblivious to the input contents and rely on heuristic criteria, our model captures the effect of visual and textual contents on layouts, and implicitly learns complex layout structure variations from data without the use of any heuristic rules. To train our model, we build a large-scale magazine layout dataset with fine-grained layout annotations and keyword labeling. Experimental results show that our model can synthesize high-quality layouts based on the visual semantics of input images and keyword-based summary of input text. We also demonstrate that our model internally learns powerful features that capture the subtle interaction between contents and layouts, which are useful for layout-aware design retrieval. SEMIOTICS ,ADVERTISING ,LAYOUT (Printing) ,ADVERTISING agencies - Abstract
This research will emphasize the visual elements and layout of Chupa Chups ads in printed media that considered as a sign. Morrison (2007) explains that the basic components of printed media advertising can be called signs which consist of: headlines, advertisement agencies (text containing messages intended for ads readers, usually in the form of slogans or taglines), visual elements (brands, logos, color, photo, or illustrated image of the advertised product), and the layout used. This research is done by using qualitative approach by using social semiotics text analysis theory done by descriptive analysis on Chupa Chups printed advertisement. This ad is selected because it uses objects instead of human figures and interesting concept to representing it meaning. The analysis will describe all the marks on the ad while social semiotics focused on visual grammar. This research discusses 3 aspects of visual design meaning (Kress and Leeuwen, 2006) namely representational meaning, interactive meaning, and composition meaning. Found these 3 meanings are complementary in building the image of Chupa Chups product ads so that the purpose of the ad is well delivered to the readers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract In evaluating aesthetics of graph drawings, recent works have provided participants with an adjacency list of a graph and asked them to sketch a pleasing layout of the graph. However, this line of research has not considered aesthetics for user-sketched layouts of graphs with symmetries, which are an important property of a given graph drawing. Therefore, the work reported in this paper focuses on empirically evaluating aesthetics for user-sketched layouts of symmetric graphs. We provided participants adjacency lists of two symmetric graphs and asked them to sketch the two graphs. We analyzed whether symmetries were shown in user-sketched drawings, and further analyzed the aesthetics based on their drawing processes and drawing preferences. In addition, our experiment includes multiple stages to analyze whether the participants had the potential learning ability to draw symmetric structures of graphs. We found that in drawing symmetrical graphs, showing symmetry was likely considered more important than minimizing edge crossings, and that most participants made substantial progress in their ability to create symmetric drawings after going through the experimental stages. - Abstract
This very popular design book has been wholly revised and expanded to feature a new dimension of inspiring and counterintuitive ideas to thinking about graphic design relationships. The Elements of Graphic Design, Second Edition is now in full color in a larger, 8 x 10-inch trim size, and contains 40 percent more content and over 750 images to enhance and better clarify the concepts in this thought-provoking resource. The second edition also includes a new section on Web design; new discussions of modularity, framing, motion and time, rules of randomness, and numerous quotes supported by images and biographies. This pioneering work provides designers, art directors, and students--regardless of experience--with a unique approach to successful design. Veteran designer and educator Alex. W. White has assembled a wealth of information and examples in his exploration of what makes visual design stunning and easy to read. Readers will discover White's four elements of graphic design, including how to: define and reveal dominant images, words, and concepts; use scale, color, and position to guide the viewer through levels of importance; employ white space as a significant component of design and not merely as background; and use display and text type for maximum comprehension and value to the reader. Offering a new way to think about and use the four design elements, this book is certain to inspire better design.

- Abstract
Selecting the right color palette for any design project, whether personal or commercial, can make all the difference in getting it right. Colors set the tone for visual communication and are essential elements in effective information navigation. Unfortunately however, for most people, even many trained designers, choosing color is not an easy process, but with a little bit of science and a color advice, anyone can make the right choice. Color Harmony: Layout takes 23 descriptive adjectives and shows 10 different layouts (letterhead, poster, book jacket, brochure, newsletter etc.) in three color combinations for each adjective. The result is 1,035 color/layout variations illustrating how colors are used to great effect in design. Opening with a discussion on how to choose color(s) for layouts, this book features 2 one-page case studies of various layouts whose color is the driving factor illustrating for readers how color can be used thoughtfully and effectively.

- Abstract
Presents diverse, international, in-depth case studies. While there are many books showcasing graphic design work, few present in-depth projects, exploring concept, designerÆs strategy, visual problem-solving, and specifics, illustrating the concrete use of design principles to achieve intended communication goals. As a result, readers are often left with only a surface understanding of how a project might have evolved or how the visual aspects of its design are brought together to convey its intended message. The case studies in Design Evolution comprehensively demonstrate the real-world application of visual principles discussed in a more formal, educational context. Readers will understand how the principles for image, layout, type, and color explored in volume 1, Design Elements, work in combination, to execute the overall solutions showcased in this volume. The depth and range of content presented in these case studies distinguishes this book from all others in the design showcase genre -- offering readers a chance to not only be inspired by the quality and innovation of showcased projects, but to understand how they were realized.
