Den globala biologiska mångfalden minskar på grund av kraftig mänsklig exploatering av resurser. Ett sådant exempel är diversitetens nedgång i Fennoskandias skogar. Denna studie sökte att undersöka om skogsbruket negativt påverkar mångfalden i en svensk skog i förhållande till dess vedlevande lavar och mossor, med hjälp av träsubstratets kvaliteter som jämförelse och oberoende variabel. 21 vedlevande mossor och lavar var grunden för dessa jämförelser. Studien jämförde två ursprungligen likadana produktionsskogar, där den ena blev ett naturreservat för nästan 100 år sedan. De ligger sydost om Linköping stad, nära BjärkaSäby. Tio 300 m2transekter med slumpmässigt genererade startpunkter och riktningar etablerades i varje skog. Kvantiteten av, deras diameter, deras höjd/längd och deras arttillhörighet för levande och döda träd över en meter i höjd noterades. Nedbrytningsstadier för liggande död ved bredare än 5 centimeter noterades. Ett Wilcoxon-rank-summa-test avslöjade signifikant högre medelvärden av förekomster för vedlevande arter inuti reservatet. Oparade t-tester avslöjade signifikant högre medelvärden för de vedlevande arternasarttäckning och för volymen död ved i reservatet. Pearsons chi-två test avslöjade signifikanta fördelningsskillnader hos levande tallars och lövträdsdiametrar mellan de två områdena men inte mellan fördelningen av nedbrytningsstadier eller hos diametrarna för levande granar. Logistiska regressioner avslöjade att de flesta av de vedlevande arterna med över 10 förekomster i båda områdena över lag hade åtminstone en signifikant korrelation med dess substrats egenskaper. Fynden tyder på att modernt skogsbruk påverkar vedlevande arter negativt, främst på grund av den lilla mängden substrat tillgängligt i produktionsskogen snarare än på grund av substratens variation av egenskaper. Global biodiversity is declining due to human exploitation, such as seen with its decline within Fennoscandian forests. This study aimed to see if forestry negatively impacts diversity in a Swedish forest in relation to its wood-living lichens and mosses, using the wooden substrate qualities as a point of comparison. 21 saproxylic mosses and lichens formed the basis of these comparisons. The study compared two originally equal production forests, where one became a reserve almost 100 years ago. They are located south-east of Linköping City, near Bjärka-Säby. Ten 300 m2 transects with randomly generated placements and directions were established in each forest. The quantity, diameter, height/length, and species of living and deadtrees over one meter tall were noted. Decay stages for lying dead wood broader than 5 centimeters was noted. A Wilcoxon-rank-sum-test revealed significantly higher meanoccurrences of saproxylic species in the reserve. Unpaired t-tests revealed significantly higher means of saproxylic species coverage and volume of dead wood in the reserve. Pearson’s chi-square test revealed significant distribution differences of living pines and deciduous tree diameters between the two areas but not in the distribution of wood decay stages or in the diameters of living spruces. Logistic regressions revealed that most of the saproxylic specieswith over 10 occurrences in both areas over all had at least one significant correlation with its substrate’s properties. Findings indicate that modern forestry negatively impacts wood-dwelling species mostly due to the small amount of substrate in the managed forest rather than due to their variety

The exploitation of land in Northern Sweden has caused a significant depletion of grazing grounds for semi-domesticated reindeer. This is a threat to the indigenous Sami reindeer herders of Sweden, who rely on the grazing ground in order to sustainably feed their herds. In the last decade, a significant amount of grazing land has been lost due to the construction of wind power parks (WPP) in important grazing regions. This thesis examines the discourse surrounding a WPP built in Härjedalen for IKEA. The WPP was built on Glötesvålen, a unique highland used for grazing by Mittådalen, a local herding community. Through a dissection of electronic sources and semi-structured interviews, the author conducts a discourse analysis to identify the most prevalent narratives surrounding the construction of IKEA’s WPP on Glötesvålen. An inductive approach is used to identify underlying ideologies present in the discourse through a relevant theoretical framework. The results show a pervasive enthusiasm for the WPP as a pivot towards renewable energy which mirrors the ideology of ecological modernization. The results also find a critical narrative which lifts the uneven power dynamic experienced by reindeer herders. This narrative is understood through the lens of Spivak’s (2010) “Can the Subaltern Speak?”. An additional discourse found is the symbolic issue between industrial ecological transitioning and the right to reindeer husbandry as a cultural heritage. Exploateringen av mark i norra Sverige har orsakat en betydande förlust av betesmarker för renskötare. Detta hotar den svensk-samiska rennäringen, som förlitar sig på betesmarken för att hållbart mata sina hjordar. Under det senaste decenniet har en betydande mängd betesmark gått förlorad på grund av den ökande mängden vindkraftsparker (WPP) på, eller intillrenbetesmarker. Denna avhandling undersöker diskursen kring en WPP byggd i Härjedalen för IKEA. WPP byggdes på Glötesvålen, ett låg-fjäll som tidigare haft strategiskt viktiga betesmarker för samebyn Mittådalen. Genom en dissektion av elektroniska källor och halvstrukturerade intervjuer genomför författaren en diskursanalys för att identifiera de vanligaste narrativen om IKEAs vindkraftpark på Glötesvålen. En induktiv metod används för att identifiera underliggande ideologier som finns i diskursen genom ett relevant teoretisk ramverk. Resultaten visar en genomgripande entusiasm för vindkraft som ett steg mot förnybar energi. Detta narrativ speglar ideologin för ekologisk modernisering. Resultaten hittar också ett kritisk narrativ som lyfter den ojämna maktdynamiken som renskötarna upplever. Detta förstås genom Spivaks (2010) "Kan den underordnade tala?". Ytterligare en diskurs som upptäcks är symbolfrågan mellan industriell ekologisk omställning och bevarandet av renskötseln som kulturarv.

Background: Dengue is caused by four antigenically distinct serotypes of dengue viruses, DENV-1, -2, -3 and -4. A tetravalent live attenuated dengue vaccine, Dengvaxia, sensitised naive recipients to severe dengue illness upon a subsequent natural dengue infection that is suspected to be due to antibody-dependent enhancement (ADE). ADE has also been implicated in the severe neurological outcomes of Zika virus (ZIKV) infection. It has become evident that cross-reactive antibodies targeting the viral pre-membrane protein and fusion-loop epitope are ADE-competent. A pre-clinical tetravalent dengue sub-unit vaccine candidate, DSV4, eliminates these ADE-competent epitopes. Methods: We have made a head-to-head comparison of the putative ADE-competence of murine polyclonal antibodies induced by DSV4, Dengvaxia and an ‘in house’ tetravalent mixture of all four laboratory DENV strains, TV DENV, using established mouse models of DENV and ZIKV ADE. Findings: DSV4-induced antibodies neutralised DENVs, but not ZIKV, and did not promote ADE of either DENV or ZIKV in vivo, whereas antibodies elicited by Dengvaxia and TV DENV, not only neutralised DENVs and ZIKV potently, but also promoted ADE of both DENV and ZIKV in vivo. Further, unlike DSV4-induced antibodies, Dengvaxia- and TV DENV-induced antibodies significantly enhanced ZIKV load in several tissues. Interpretation: Whole virus-based dengue vaccines may be associated with ADE risk, despite their potent virus-neutralising capacity. Vaccines designed to eliminate ADE-competent epitopes may help eliminate/minimise ADE risk. Lassa virus (LASV), the causative agent of Lassa fever, infects several hundred thousand people in Western Africa, resulting in many lethal Lassa fever cases. No U.S. Food and Drug Administration-licensed countermeasures are available to prevent or treat LASV infection. We describe the generation of a novel LASV live-attenuated vaccine candidate rLASV(IGR/S-S), which is based on the replacement of the large genomic segment noncoding intergenic region (IGR) with that of the small genome segment. rLASV(IGR/S-S) is less fit in cell culture than wild-type virus and does not cause clinical signs in inoculated guinea pigs. Importantly, rLASV(IGR/S-S) protects immunized guinea pigs against an otherwise lethal exposure to LASV., Lassa virus (LASV) poses a significant public health problem within the regions of Lassa fever endemicity in Western Africa. LASV infects several hundred thousand individuals yearly, and a considerable number of Lassa fever cases are associated with high morbidity and lethality. No approved LASV vaccine is available, and current therapy is limited to an off-label usage of ribavirin that is only partially effective and associated with significant side effects. The impact of Lassa fever on human health, together with the limited existing countermeasures, highlights the importance of developing effective vaccines against LASV. Here, we present the development and characterization of a recombinant LASV (rLASV) vaccine candidate [rLASV(IGR/S-S)], which is based on the presence of the noncoding intergenic region (IGR) of the small (S) genome segment (S-IGR) in both large (L) and S LASV segments. In cultured cells, rLASV(IGR/S-S) was modestly less fit than wild-type rLASV (rLASV-WT). rLASV(IGR/S-S) was highly attenuated in guinea pigs, and a single subcutaneous low dose of the virus completely protected against otherwise lethal infection with LASV-WT. Moreover, rLASV(IGR/S-S) was genetically stable during serial passages in cultured cells. These findings indicate that rLASV(IGR/S-S) can be developed into a LASV live-attenuated vaccine (LAV) that has the same antigenic composition as LASV-WT and a well-defined mechanism of attenuation that overcomes concerns about increased virulence that could be caused by genetic changes in the LAV during multiple rounds of multiplication.

Lassa virus (LASV) infects several hundred thousand people in Western Africa, resulting in many lethal Lassa fever (LF) cases. Licensed LF vaccines are not available, and anti-LF therapy is limited to off-label use of the nucleoside analog ribavirin with uncertain efficacy. We describe the generation of a novel live-attenuated LASV vaccine candidate. This vaccine candidate is based on mutating wild-type (WT) LASV in a key region of the viral genome, the glycoprotein precursor (GPC) gene. These mutations do not change the encoded GPC but interfere with its production in host cells. This mutated LASV (rLASV-GPC/CD) behaves like WT LASV (rLASV-WT) in cell culture, but in contrast to rLASV-WT, does not cause disease in inoculated guinea pigs. Guinea pigs immunized with rLASV-GPC/CD were protected against an otherwise lethal exposure to WT LASV. Our results support the testing of this candidate vaccine in nonhuman primate models ofLF., Lassa virus (LASV) is endemic in Western Africa and is estimated to infect hundreds of thousands of individuals annually. A considerable number of these infections result in Lassa fever (LF), which is associated with significant morbidity and a case-fatality rate as high as 69% among hospitalized confirmed patients. U.S. Food and Drug Administration-approved LF vaccines are not available. Current antiviral treatment is limited to off-label use of a nucleoside analogue, ribavirin, that is only partially effective and associated with significant side effects. We generated and characterized a recombinant LASV expressing a codon-deoptimized (CD) glycoprotein precursor gene (GPC), rLASV-GPC/CD. Comparison of growth kinetics and peak titers showed that rLASV-GPC/CD is slightly attenuated in cell culture compared to wild-type (WT) recombinant LASV (rLASV-WT). However, rLASV-GPC/CD is highly attenuated in strain 13 and Hartley guinea pigs, as reflected by the absence of detectable clinical signs in animals inoculated with rLASV-GPC/CD. Importantly, a single subcutaneous dose of rLASV-GPC/CD provides complete protection against an otherwise lethal exposure to LASV. Our results demonstrate the feasibility of implementing a CD approach for developing a safe and effective LASV live-attenuated vaccine candidate. Moreover, rLASV-GPC/CD might provide investigators with a tool to safely study LASV outside maximum (biosafety level 4) containment, which could accelerate the elucidation of basic aspects of the molecular and cell biology of LASV and the development of novel LASV medical countermeasures.

Bjerke, J.W., Myking, T., Nyeggen, H. & Aarrestad, P.A. 2019. Pasvikprogrammets terrestriske overvåking. Endringer i mengde av tungmetaller i biologisk materiale og i lavdekning på trær. NINA Rapport 1751. Norsk institutt for naturforskning. Effekter på skogøkosystemer i grensetraktene Norge-Russland-Finland av luftforurensing fra smelteverket i Nikel og briketteringsanlegget i Zapoljarnij noen få km fra grensen mot Norge har vært overvåket i de siste tiårene i ulike overvåkingsprogrammer. Norske lokaliteter for overvåking av tungmetaller i biologisk materiale og forekomst av lav på trær ble sist gang analysert i 2004. Fylkesmannen i Troms og Finnmark engasjerte i 2019 forskere fra Norsk institutt for naturforskning (NINA) og Norsk institutt for bioøkonomi (NIBIO) for å oppdatere kunnskapen rundt tung-metaller og forekomst av lav, slik at det ville være mulig å påvise eventuelle trender i endringer fra 2004. Fem overvåkingsflater ble analysert i 2019. Fire av disse ligger langs en tilnærmet horisontal linje fra Svanvik og vestover, mens den fjerde flata ligger i Jarfjorden nord for Nikel. Analysene viser ei langt større dekning av makrolav i 2019 enn i 2004 på alle de tre overvåkingsflatene hvor lav på bjørk overvåkes. Økninga er svært betydelig, hhv. 194 %, 287 % og 352 %. På de to flatene hvor lav på furu overvåkes, som begge ligger nær Nikel, var det i 1995 og 2004 ikke registrert noen lav på stammene. I 2019 ble det registrert noen få individer, noe som ledet til ei dekning på 1,5 %. Konsentrasjonene av kobber og nikkel i etasjemose og reinlav var i 2019 to til tre ganger høyere enn i 2004. Konsentrasjonene var høyest på overvåkingsflata nærmest Nikel. Også flata i Jar-fjorden hadde i 2019 høye konsentrasjoner til tross for betydelig avstand til Nikel. Tre årganger med furunåler (dvs. fra 2017 til 2019) viste høyere konsentrasjoner med økende alder. Konsentrasjonen av bly viste omtrent det samme geografiske mønsteret som nikkel og kobber. Konsentrasjonen er imidlertid mye lavere for bly enn for de to andre tungmetallene. Overvåkinga av avsetning av svoveldioksid og tungmetaller, som rapportert årlig av Norsk institutt for luftforskning (NILU), viser en nedadgående trend for svoveldioksid og en økende trend for tungmetaller. Ei rådende vindretning fra sør om vinteren fører imidlertid til at Jarfjordenområdet får store avsetninger av forurensning vinterstid. Tungmetallanalysene fra biologisk materiale samsvarer derfor godt med NILUs overvåkingsresultater. Høye konsentrasjoner i furunåler viser at det også de siste tre årene har vært betydelig avsetning av tungmetaller. Økninga i lavdekning tolker vi som en respons til reduserte utslipp av svoveldioksid. Disse boreale treboende lavene er generelt mer sensitive til svoveldioksid enn til tungmetaller, men fortsetter akkumuleringa av tungmetaller vil det med tida kunne reversere den registrerte økende trenden for lavdekket på trær.

Olsen, S.L., Hedger, R.D., Hendrichsen, D., Dillinger, B., Venter, A. & Evju, M. 2020. Geografisk utbredelse av truede insekter og edderkoppdyr, sopp, lav og moser: modellering av hotspots. NINA Rapport 1727. Norsk institutt for naturforskning. Endret arealbruk er ifølge det internasjonale naturpanelet (IPBES) den største trusselen mot verdens biologiske mangfold. Ivaretakelse av artenes habitater er derfor den mest effektive måten å bevare det biologiske mangfoldet på. I dette arbeidet er det naturlig å fokusere på områder med særlig høyt biologisk mangfold, såkalte «hotspots», hvor mange arter kan ivaretas på samme areal. Dette krever imidlertid kunnskap om hvor slike hotspots finnes. I 2018 modellerte vi hotspots for karplanter i Norge, inkludert hotspots for karplanter generelt og truede arter og truede ansvarsarter spesielt. Vi har nå gjort det samme for insekter og edderkoppdyr, sopp, lav og moser. Våre prediksjoner viste at hotspots for alle arter av både insekter og edderkoppdyr, sopp, lav og moser var konsentrert til Oslofjord-området, samt langs Sør- og til dels Vestlandskysten og områdene rundt Trondheimsfjorden. Når det gjaldt truede arter og truede ansvarsarter, var forekomsten av hotspots mye mer spredt og inkluderte i tillegg dalstrøkene på Østlandet, hvor Gudbrandsdalen pekte seg ut som særlig viktig, og for noen artsgrupper deler av Trøndelag, Nordland, Troms og Finnmark. Hotspots for de ulike artsgruppene var relatert til ulike miljøvariabler, men alle var konsentrert til områder preget av stor befolkningstetthet, bebyggelse eller infrastruktur. Kun en liten andel av hotspots-områdene var fanget opp av eksisterende verneområder, kartlagte naturverdier (naturtypelokaliteter og MiS nøkkelbiotoper) eller inngrepsfrie naturområder. Dette, i kombinasjon med forekomsten av hotspots nær områder preget av menneskelig aktivitet, gjør artene ekstra sårbare for arealbruksendringer og andre inngrep i eller i nærheten av leveområdene. I slike pressområder var dessuten hotspot-områdene svært fragmentert på grunn av infrastruktur og annen arealbruk. Det betyr arealbruksendringer allerede har redusert arealet med intakte hotspots. Overlapp mellom hotspots for truede arter av ulike artsgrupper var konsentrert til områdene rundt Oslofjorden og til dels kyststrøk nord til Rogaland, rundt Trondheimsfjorden og i dalstrøkene på Østlandet. Det betyr at i disse områdene er mulighetene størst for å ivareta hotspots for flere artsgrupper, først og fremst karplanter, sopp, lav og moser, på samme areal. Truede ansvarsarter fulgte i stor grad det samme mønsteret som truede arter, men for truede ansvarsarter var det også store hotspot-områder uten overlapp mellom artsgrupper. Det betyr at truede ansvarsarter av ulike artsgrupper i mindre grad kan forvaltes på samme areal. Kunnskap om hvor vi finner hotspots for truede arter og truede ansvarsarter er nyttig når tiltak skal settes i verk for å nå målet om å stanse tapet av biologisk mangfold i Norge. Det er imidlertid viktig å huske på at dette dreier seg om modellerte data. Kartene angir hvor naturforholdene på stedet tilsier at potensialet for slike hotspots er størst og erstatter ikke kartlegging av arter og naturtyper. Land-use change is, according to the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), currently the greatest threat to global biodiversity. Habitat conservation is therefore the most effective way of preserving biodiversity. This work should be focused on areas where diversity is especially high, so-called ”hotspots”, where many species can be preserved within the same geographical area. In 2018 we modelled hotspots for vascular plants in Norway, including hotspots for vascular plants in general, and threatened species and threatened national responsibility species in particular. We have now repeated these analyses for insects and arachnids, fungi, lichens and bryophytes. Our predictions showed that hotspots for all species of insects and arachnids, fungi, lichens and bryophytes were concentrated to the Oslo fjord area, as well as along the southern and western coast and around the Trondheim fjord. The distribution of hotspots of threatened species and threatened responsibility species was much more scattered and included in addition the big valleys of Eastern Norway, where Gudbrandsdalen was especially important, and for some species groups parts of Trøndelag, Nordland, Troms and Finnmark. Hotspots for the different species groups were related to different environmental variables, but all were concentrated to areas characterized by a high human population density, buildings or infrastructure. Only a small proportion of the hotspot areas were included in existing protected areas, mapped nature values (nature types and MiS key habitats) or INON areas. This, in combination with the occurrence of hotspots close to areas characterized by human activity, makes the species especially vulnerable to land-use change and other types of human intervention in or close to their habitats. In such high-pressure areas hotspots were also highly fragmented due to infrastructure and other types of human land-use, meaning that land-use change has already reduced the area of intact hotspots. The overlap between hotspots for threatened species of different species groups was concentrated to the Oslo fjord area and partly to coastal areas as far north as Rogaland, around the Trondheim fjord and in the valleys of Eastern Norway. Here the possibility to preserve hotspots for several species groups, mainly vascular plants, fungi, lichens and bryophytes, within the same geographical area is the greatest. Threatened responsibility species mainly followed the same pattern, but for these species there were also large hotspot-areas without overlap between species groups. This means that threatened responsibility species of different species groups to a lesser degree can be managed in the same geographical area. Knowledge of the location of hotspots for threatened species and threatened responsibility species is needed in order to facilitate management actions aimed at stopping biodiversity loss in Norway. It is, however, important to remember that these are modelled data. The maps show where environmental conditions result in the greatest potential for hotspots, and do not replace mapping of species and nature types. Such maps are still a useful tool for coarse-scale planning in the management of Norwegian nature. An extended abstract is available in Appendix 8.

In light of the last decades international developments that brought up an increase in the number of international and intercontinental commercial transactions, it is visible the celebration of contractual relations involving multiple locations that, notwithstanding the possibility of being jointly directed to the same aim, are entered into between multiple and distinct parties, with different legal, economical and social backgrounds, thus contributing to a contractual scene ever more complex. Although it is true that all of these circumstances have a substantial contribute to a growth on the resource to arbitration, exactly due to the fact that it is, in abstract terms, a mechanism of dispute resolution suitable to provide an adequate answer to the specificities of the possible multiplicity of legal systems conflicting, in parallel with all of its recognised advantages, namely, the arbitrators’ specialisation and procedural promptness that come from resorting to arbitration; it is also true that the legal relations established between the parties, bearing in mind all of these factors, enhance, in abstract terms, a wider variety of problems, in particular, regarding legal standing in arbitral proceedings, that have to be covered in order not to be affected legal and consequently commercial matters, efficiency and effectiveness. In this scenario, it is becoming more important to analyse the possibility of making a third party intervene in pending proceedings, whose participation may contribute to a final award truly fair and effective, notwithstanding the fact that effectiveness is closely related with the existence of incomprehensible and contradictory decisions, on the same dispute. However, in arbitration, since it is based on the parties’ consent to subject their altercation to this dispute resolution mechanism, this intervention is not exempted of difficulties. The different approaches to this issue made by some legal systems and Institutional rules will be analysed on this paper. Nevertheless, the way by which the Portuguese LAV has dealt with third party intervention will be primarily addressed in close dialogue with the mechanisms foreseen in the Portuguese CPC. À luz dos desenvolvimentos da cena internacional nas últimas décadas, que geraram um aumento de transações comerciais internacionais e intercontinentais, tem-se vindo a assistir à celebração de contratos plurilocalizados que, não obstante poderem estar conjuntamente orientados para o mesmo fim, são celebrados entre múltiplas e distintas partes, com um enquadramento legal, económico e social diferenciado, tornando o panorama contratual cada vez mais complexo. Se é verdade que todas estas circunstâncias já de si contribuiriam potencialmente para o substancial crescimento do recurso à arbitragem, exatamente por ser, em abstrato, um meio de resolução de litígios idóneo a responder adequadamente às especificidades decorrentes da potencial multiplicidade de sistemas jurídicos em confronto, a par de todas as outras reconhecidas vantagens correspondentes à especialidade dos árbitros e celeridade processuais decorrentes do recurso à mesma, não é menos verdade que as relações jurídicas que se estabelecem entre as partes, atendendo a todos estes fatores, potenciam, em abstrato, uma maior variedade de problemas, em particular quanto à legitimidade em processo arbitral, que têm necessariamente de ser atendidos, para que o tráfego jurídico e, consequentemente, comercial, não seja afetado na sua qualidade, eficiência e eficácia. Neste panorama, começa a relevar a análise da possibilidade de fazer intervir terceiros no processo arbitral cuja participação possa contribuir para uma decisão final verdadeiramente justa e eficaz, sendo certo que a eficácia está intrinsecamente relacionada com a inexistência de decisões incompreensíveis ou contraditórias, quanto a um determinado litígio. Porém, em Arbitragem, exatamente por o pilar tradicional ser o consentimento das partes que a ela se submetem, esta intervenção não é isenta de dificuldades. As diversas abordagens que têm vindo a ser efetuadas por alguns ordenamentos jurídicos e regulamentos institucionais serão objeto da nossa análise, embora o foco principal desta Dissertação incida sobre a forma pela qual a LAV previu a possibilidade de intervenção de terceiros, o que se irá fazer num estreito diálogo com o mecanismo que se encontra previsto no CPC.

Background: Left atrial volume is a prognostic factor in cardiac pathologies. We aimed to validate left atrial volume detection with 3D and 2D echocardiography (3DE and 2DE) by human cadaveric casts. 3DE facilitates measurement of atrial volume without geometrical assumptions or dependence on imaging angle in contrast to 2DE methods. Methods: For method validation, six water-filled balloons were submerged in a 20-l water tank and their volumes were measured with 3DE. Seven human cadaveric left atrial casts were prepared of silicone and were transformed into ultrasound-permeable casts. Casts were imaged in the same setting, so that 3DE and 2DE of casts represented transthoracic apical view. Left ventricle analysis softwares GE 4D Auto LVQ and TomTec 4D LV-Function were used for 3DE volumetry. Results; Balloon volumes ranged 37 to 255ml (mean 126 ml). 3DE resulted in an excellent volumetric agreement with balloon volumes, absolute bias was -3.7 ml (95% CI -5.9 to -1.4). Atrial cast volumes were 38 to 94 ml (mean 56.6 ml). 3DE and 2DE volumes were excellently correlated with cast volumes (r = 0.96 to 0.99). Biases were for GE 4D LVQ - 0.7 ml (95% CI -6.1 to 4.6), TomTec 4D LV-Function 3.3 ml (-1.9 to 8.5) and 2DE 2.9 ml (-4.0 to 9.9). 3DE resulted in lower limits of agreement and showed no volume-related bias in contrast to area-length method. Conclusions: We conclude that measurement of human cadaveric left atrial cast volumes by 3DE is in excellent agreement with true cast volumes.

Blaalid, R. & Jokerud, M. 2018. Epifyttregistrering av rødlistede lav og moser i Stavanger. NINA Rapport 1503. Norsk institutt for naturforskning. Rød- og svartelistet sopp, lav og moser ble registrert på 287 trær i Stavanger sentrum, nærmere bestemt i Kongsgata, Lagårdsveien og Hillevågsveien. Bakgrunnen for artsregistrering var den planlagt utvidelse av bussveien på strekningen fra Haugåsveien i Hillevåg via sentrum til Mos-vatnet. Data fra Artsdatabanken og GBIF Norge viser registreringer av 32 rød- og svartelistede arter i området. Registeringene ble utført fra bakkenivå til ca. 180 cm høyde. Vi benyttet oss av Statens vegvesen sitt Vegkart (https://www.vegvesen.no/vegkart/) med funksjonen som viser trær for å identifisere hvert tre. Vi fant ingen svartelistede arter av moser, sopp eller lav på de undersøkte trærne. Vi fant en rødlistet mose (ynglehårsstjerne) og to rødlistede lav (kystbrunlav og grå punktlav). En av lavartene vi fant (grå punktlav), består muligens av to arter (inkludert grå punktlav og rand-punktlav). Disse to artene var umulig å skille og vi har derfor valgt å definere dette som et arts-kompleks grå punktlav cf. 60 trær hadde en rødlistet art, mens 6 trær hadde to rødlistede arter. Vi fant i tillegg en potensiell fremmed lavart på totalt 19 trær. Våre funn viser at byområder er viktige habitater, også for sjeldne og truede arter. Vi anbefaler at det tas særlig hensyn til rødlistefunnene og at alternativer til trasevalg utredes for å kunne la trær med disse artene stå. Dersom det er umulig å bevare trærne, anbefaler vi at totalt ni trær flyttes til egnede lokaliteter for å bevare epifyttsamfunnet av rødlistede arter.

Töpper, J., Velle, L.G. & Vandvik, V. 2018. Utvikling av metodikk for økologisk tilstandsvurdering basert på indikatorverdier etter Ellenberg og Grime (revidert utgave). NINA Rapport 1529b. Norsk institutt for naturforskning. Naturforvaltningen trenger gode indikatorer for å vurdere naturens økologiske tilstand. Slike indikatorer er ofte basert på tilstedeværelse eller fravær av en eller noen indikatorarter eller på andre enkeltkildedata. Imidlertid kan indikatorer for økologisk tilstand basert på data fra flere arter eller hele artssammensetninger være mer robuste, mer generelle og enklere å vurdere enn indikatorer basert på enkeltart eller enkeltkildedata. Dette er spesielt relevant når flere arter kollektivt bidrar til en økologisk funksjon, har samme respons på en påvirkningsfaktor, eller når det ikke er noen eller bare noen få arter som kan være effektive indikatorer, dvs. at de både forekommer med høy nok frekvens når systemet er i en god økologisk tilstand og at de samtidig er tilstrekkelig følsomme for forverring i tilstanden. I denne rapporten har vi utviklet en metodikk for økologisk tilstandsvurdering basert på to slike typer indikatorverdier; Ellenbergs indikatorverdier for miljøforhold og Grimes indikatorverdier for miljøstress, forstyrrelser og konkurranse. Vi har undersøkt om plantearters indikatorverdier i Ellenberg- og Grime-systemet kan benyttes til å utvikle indikatorer for å vurdere økologisk tilstand i ulike naturtyper. Metoden tar utgangspunkt i en referansetilstand for hver enkelt naturtype, basert på de generaliserte artslistedatasettene for karplanter og moser i Natur i Norge (NiN 2.1). Artenes tilstedeværelse og mengdeforhold i disse artslistene kombineres med artenes indikatorverdier (data fra litteraturen) og veide gjennomsnitt regnes ut for hver indikator i Ellenberg- og Grime-systemet for hver av naturtypene. Disse veide gjennomsnittene og fordelingene rundt dem utgjør forventede indikatorverdier for naturtypen i god økologisk tilstand, og disse kan brukes som en referanse for data fra feltundersøkelser eller overvåkning. Vi har undersøkt to metoder for å sette grenseverdier for om en naturtype er i god eller dårlig tilstand: i) ved å teste om et datasett fra en feltundersøkelse av plantesammensetningen faller innenfor eller utenfor et konfidensintervall for referansefordelingen, og ii) ved å beregne prosent overlapp mellom fordelingen til datasettet fra feltundersøkelsen og referansefordelingen. Resultatene viser at artssammensetningsbaserte indikatorer, her representert ved Ellenberg- og Grime-systemene, kan brukes i økologisk tilstandsvurdering. Det er likevel noen utfordringer knyttet til utviklingen av metodikken: i) Det finnes påfallende få feltdatasett fra natur i dårlig tilstand, noe som gjør det vanskelig å validere metodikken, og gjør at vi ikke kan sette empirisk baserte grenseverdier for hvilke konfidensintervaller og/eller prosent overlapp som representerer god tilstand. ii) De generaliserte artslistedatasettene er ikke oppdatert i forhold til dagens natur-typeinndeling i NiN 2.1, noe som også vil påvirke referanseverdiene. iii) For å operasjonalisere disse indikatorene vil det være nødvendig med et utviklingsarbeid for å fastslå hvilke Ellenberg- Grime- og andre typer indikatorer som vil kunne være gode (det vil si tilstrekkelig sensitive og presise) indikatorer for forskjellige naturtyper og naturtypenivåer, og hva grenseverdiene bør være i hvert enkelt tilfelle. iv) Vi trenger sannsynligvis regionaliserte artslister og grenseverdier, i hvert fall for noen naturtyper og indikatorer. Töpper, J., Velle, L.G. & Vandvik, V. 2018. Developing a method for assessment of ecological state based on indicator values after Ellenberg and Grime (revised edition). NINA Report 1529b. Norwegian Institute for Nature Research. Nature conservation and management need good metrics for assessing the ecological state and condition of ecosystems. Such indicators are often based on the presence or absence of one or a few indicator species, or on other single-source data. However, indicators for ecological state or condition based on data from multiple species or entire species compositions can be more robust, more general, and easier to assess than indicators based on single species or single-source data. This is particularly relevant when several species collectively contribute to an eco-logical function, have the same response to a driver, or when there are no or only a few species that can be efficient indicators (i.e. they both occur with a high enough frequency when the system is in a good ecological state and at the same time are sufficiently sensitive to deterioration in the state). In this report, we have developed a methodology for ecological condition assessment based on two types of indicators; Ellenbergs indicator values for environmental conditions, and Grimes indicator values for stress, disturbance and competition. We have investigated whether the plant indicator values in the Ellenberg system and Grime system can be used to develop indicators to assess ecological state in Norwegian ecosystem types. The method makes use of data on the reference-state species composition for each ecosystem type, based on the generalized species list data for plants and bryophytes in Nature in Norway (NiN 2.1). The species presence and abundances in these species lists are combined with the species indicator values (data from the literature) and a community-weighted average is calculated for each indicator variable and ecosystem type. These weighted averages and the distributions around them represent expected indicator values for ecosystem types in good ecological condition and can be used as a reference against which to compare data from field surveys. We examine two approaches for setting quantitative limits for good ecological condition: i) testing whether a data set from a field survey falls within or outside a confidence interval for the refer-ence distribution, and ii) by calculating percent overlap between the distribution of the data sets from the field survey and the reference distribution. Our results show that species composition-based indicators, represented here by Ellenberg and Grime, can be used in assessing ecological condition. However, there remain some challenges in developing the methodology: i) There are strikingly few field data sets available from nature in poor ecological state, making it difficult to validate the methodology and preventing us from setting empirically-based limits for good condition in terms of confidence intervals and / or percent overlap. ii) The generalized species list data sets are not updated with respect to NiN 2.1, which will affect the reference values. iii) To operationalize these indicators, methodological development will be necessary. First, to determine which Ellenberg- and Grime indicators, and other types of species indicator values, that could provide good indicators of good ecological state (i.e. be both sensitive and precise) for different ecosystem types, and second, for setting limits for good condition for these indicators. iv) We probably need regionalized species lists and limit values, at least for some nature types and indicators.
